2023 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Nuits

Sylvain Cathiard built a fearsome reputation through the 1990's and early 2000's for producing some of the greatest wines of Burgundy. His ability to marry fragrant and perfectly ripe grapes with expertly chosen new oak set the standard at the time. While the wines were more approachable than his peers, they also had the requisite components to age and evolve gloriously for many years. Now under the stewardship of his son Sebastien, the wines have gained even more acclaim and are equally as well built for an envious evolution in the cellar.

Subtle but not invisible wood influence sets off aromas that derive more from the dark side of the fruit spectrum while displaying a similar level of earth influence. The delicious and appealingly vibrant lighter weight flavors exude evident minerality on the dusty and mildly austere finale where a hint of bitter pit fruit character slowly emerges. Drink through 2027+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound

The 2023 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a playful nose with wild strawberry and raspberry fruit, and more mineralité than the Bourgogne Rouge. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline entry, harmonious and quite structured on the finish. Maybe it just misses a little sustain on the aftertaste, but otherwise this is a fine Hautes-Côtes. Drink 2026-2033.

A lighter crimson ruby. The nose takes a moment to come out. A leafy note to the fresh red fruit, medium bodied, a little leaner than the Bourgogne but fine-boned and will develop further when the oak subsides. 60% vignes basses, the other two cuvees 100%. Drink from 2026-2028.
