Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Founded by winemaker Samantha Connew, Stargazer has become one of Tasmania's most compelling small producers, crafting wines of precision and quiet intensity from the Coal River and Derwent Valleys. Whether Riesling, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, each release reflects a meticulous, hands-off approach and a focus on texture, energy and site expression. For many, Stargazer marks the sweet spot between refinement and individuality in modern Tasmanian wine.

The 2023 Pinot Noir comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where two separate parcels were planted in 2002 and 2017 respectively. The vineyard is composed of different clones, with most being G5V12 or Wadenswil, with some Abel, 115, 777, and MV6 clones added from the 2017 planting. The fruit is hand-picked, and destemmed (with 25% kept as whole bunches) to vats, where they undergo a cold soak for three days before fermentation begins. After primary fermentation, the must is pressed to French oak puncheons (with 30% being new), where it matures on lees for eight months before being transferred, racked, and blended in a tank for a further rest of six weeks before bottling.

The 2024 Palisander Pinot Noir leads with a very attractive waft of reduction. It speaks to forest floor and growing moss, alongside the plethora of dark fruits on display. In the mouth, the wine speaks of its whole-bunch component (25%) in its spices, tannin shape and length through the finish. You get blood orange, Campari, dark chocolate, raw cocoa, cherry pip and raspberry. A wholly classy and sophisticated wine, it goes beyond simple fruit expression and offers dimensional texture and clever winemaking. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

If you seek a fruit-pure, flint-struck pinot noir, you are indeed in the right place. Those reductive tones lie nicely simpatico with the pure red/dark cherry, plum and raspberry fruits and there are hints of medina spice, amaro, twiggy bits, turned earth, crushed mountain herbs and purple florals in the mix. On the palate, there is a fine balance and tension between fruit, reduction and fine minerality. The wine shows a composed, complex array of spice, sinew and lovely pure fruit, finishing long, flinty and true. Drink 2025-2038.

The Pinot Meunier for this wine comes from the Pipers Brook region in the North East of Tasmania, well-known for its sparkling wine production. In 2023, the blend consists of 51% Pinot Meunier and 49% Pinot Noir. Ninety percent of the fruit was destemmed, while the remaining 10% was kept as whole bunches. Forty percent of the Pinot Noir was co-fermented with the Pinot Meunier. After pressing, the wine was moved to a tank and racked off the sediment into seasoned French puncheons for 5 months of maturation on fine lees.

Bing cherry, rose petal, lilac and gritty hints of whole-bunch influence, from dill, peppercorn and a smoky streak of mezcal across the fibrous finish. A little distracting now, perhaps. Yet will integrate nobly with time due to the extract, density and plush refinement of the finish, never straying into excessive sweetness or medicinal notes as with too many regional pinots. A very good, mid-weighted pinot. It will only get better. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Tasmania like Burgundy has a truly cool climate, making it an ideal location to grow Pinot Noir. Benchmark pinot from this celebrated, biodynamic estate vineyard in the Derwent Valley. A gorgeous core of exact black cherries and blackberries. Confident support from French oak brings impressive scaffolding of firm, fine, mineral tannins. The finish holds good (if not excellent) length, but may build with age. It certainly has the stamina to endure long. Drink by 2034.

Fanciest fruit from best blocks, the best of show pedigree kind. It’s all BD down there at SLW in Taswegia, as we know. The quality seeming to rise and rise in recent years. Been a while between visits.
Any way you come at this you see quality. Tannins are light but shapes things well, oak is spicy and seasons gently, fruit is powerful but refined, cruise control and then some. Fragant as well, pickled and fresh cherries, woody, smoky spice and new leather, some black olive in the mix, turned, fresh earth. An earthiness to taste too but delivered in the veins of a sinewy muscle of dark berry/cherry fruitiness and lifted on brightness and coolness. Taut, long, luxurious. Beautiful pinot. Established in 1978 Stonier Vineyards was one of the pioneers on the Mornington Peninsula and has recently returned to being locally owned and run after a period of corporate ownership. Stonier’s bread and butter range and a good ‘un this vintage. Fruit off grower vineyards but all managed in-house, which gives a level of quality control. This pops and crackles with vitality, good fruit and varietal flavour. Heady aromas are punctuated by red cherries and blood orange doused in exotic spices and fresh herbs. The palate is on the light side of medium bodied with fine tannins and refreshing acidity throughout. A lovely drink. Drink 2032.

A blend of the grower vineyards, a mix of clones. Approximately 20% whole bunch on the sites that sit on volcanic soils, with everything else destemmed. Aged in 500L puncheons of which 8% was new oak. A fragrant celebration of Mornington Peninsula luminous charm, it’s impossible not to be swept away with the gleaming fruit, compact flavour and middle palate pulp and flesh. Cherry compote, plummy goodness and some Gala apple skin. Clove, nigella seed and dewy potting soil. Tannins are sandy and prop up the fruit, before a wash of fresh acidity. It’s immediately satisfying and a delightful drink without food or if you are after a suggestion may I offer the idea of lamb shanks swimming in butter mash. Drink now or will cellar well for 2-4 years. Drink 2025-2029.

As with the Reserve Chardonnay, the fruit for the pinot comes off a mix of top vineyards to create a regional stamp, although the whole bunches added to the ferment (49% all up) has made a most positive mark. The Jimjoca vineyard is one of Stonier’s most highly regarded vineyards located 2km east of Balnarring. In outstanding years it’s released as a single vineyard bottling, 2015 being one of the strongest vintages in the history of Mornington. Nearly 15% of the blend was fermented separately as whole bunches. The ferments were pressed to French oak puncheons for 6 months maturation (14% new), prior to blending and then receive another 3 months maturation in the same barrels.

A ripe, seductive Pinot embellished with rich dark fruits that makes for incredibly moreish drinking.

The fruit for Stonier Pinot Noir is derived from a selection of long term vineyard suppliers scattered across the Mornington Peninsula, but with a focus towards the region’s cooler south near the small town of Merricks. Approximately 3% of the fruit was fermented as whole bunches with a 10 month maturation process taking place in French oak (10% new) and a portion of it in stainless steel tanks (20%) to preserve the vibrant fruit characters of the vintage.

A delicious, silky textured Pinot that delivers great value.

Gamey forest floor and spicy cedar notes adding complexity. Mike Symons manages this vineyard, one he knows intimately, once part of the Stonier stable while he was chief winemaker there before leaving in ‘22. Stewed cherries and strawberry compote, earthy, twiggy wood smoke, joss sticks and a flash of Chinese five-spice plus lots of blood orange zest and juice. A touch herbal yet juicy on the palate – sinewy tannins and bright acidity very much a feature of this cool/wet vintage. It’s a good wine. Welcome back. Drink 2025-2032.

From an old MV6 block in Red Hill. 20% new oak, the balance was eight years, or older oak. 49 dozen produced.
This is not dissimilar to the standard Pinot Noir from the same vintage, though there’s a softness and a slightly more comely fruit profile. It’s all poached strawberries and spice, some paprika, mint and red liquorice, floral notes too. It’s medium-bodied, gently smoky with a bacon bone character, fine dusty tannin, and a somewhat smudgy finish of good length. Good wine all up. Drink 2024-2030.

Fruit off three vineyards: 65/25/10% Georgica at Red Hill/Stanley Road, Merricks/Robinson in Tuerong. Destemmed (bar 10% whole bunches in a separate fermenter), cold soak for a week and all gently-does-it before being pressed to French oak (mostly puncheons, 10% new, aged eight months); unfiltered. A note from Mike Symons adds, "one barrel was a bit leesy hence clarity is not perfect, maybe also reflective of my eyesight when racking". Ah, how I have missed you. Nothing wrong with the clarity – this is a light garnet hue. Lots of twiggy/bunchy fragrance and flavour, red and morello cherries, Campari, roasted tomatoes, a bit of exotica with joss sticks and rosewood, balsam fir, too. You have to dig the strong bunchy character to get into this. The palate is lighter framed, yet sinewy tannins and perky acidity work together. Drink 2024-2031.

A blend of Georgica 65% (Red Hill), Robinson 10% (Tuerong) and Stanley Road 25% (Merricks). Mike Symons talks about his relationship with Will Byron (hot) and Barney Flanders (less hot, but kind of hot), who all help each other out a bit with little fruit parcels they all like. A fruit-loving MP triumvirate here, of sorts. This gets 10% whole bunch, and 10% new oak.
This is a spicy and frisky sort of wine. Strawberry, cherry, smoked paprika and red capsicum, plenty of spice (cardamom in particular), some mint and floral top notes. It’s quite tangy and lively, with a cool spicy feel to it, poached strawberry, a lick of graphite tannin and a bright finish of good length. You have to like them a little more sappy, but it’s good in that style. Drink 2024-2030.

An elite microcosm of the Foggy Hill site. The best strip, so to speak. I prefer this to the '17. More integrated, compact, layered and detailed. The tension, curtailing the ripe and inherently sweet fruit. The oak, tannic extract and judicious whole bunch amalgamating as a finely tuned structural skein, corralling the billowing sweet berry fruit, root spice and undergrowth scents. The finish long and generous, yet nothing overt. This is mid-weighted and far from shy, but there is plenty in store embedded in the structural timbre. Drink by 2030.

There are four hectares of pinot noir growing on the Foggy Hill vineyard; this is from a one-hectare strip. It’s planted at a density of 4444 vines/hectare, using clones 115 and 777, all planted on rootstock.
Firm, ripe and convincing. Cedarwood oak shows keenly but fruit-derived flavours are yet myriad. Dry tobacco, garden herbs, beet notes, a luscious almost jellied berry character, woodsmoke and anise. There’s a smoky, twiggy bitterness to the aftertaste and it’s a most pleasant thing; it helps elevate it. This wine has the structure to age but I’m not convinced its a long termer; the next handful of years though will be good ones. Drink 2022 - 2028.

Bramble, briar and black tea aromatics set the scene for a very complex pinot that needs encouragement to release its perfume. There’s a lot of spice here, and autumnal effects, and general savouriness/earthiness in there with the fruit. I thought at first that it was peddling a bit too hard, but strangely enough the wine seemed to tighten and become more structural as it breathed, rather than the other way around, and as it did so I was turned more and more in its favour. This is a smoky, spicy Pinot Noir with rhubarb and red cherry flavours flowing into multi-layered sheets of savoured tannin. There’s little doubt that this will develop beautifully. Drink 2024-2029+

A medium cherry brick. Already showing a little, and it should be said, attractive, forest floor note, this is packed with flavour, robust and quite firmly structured. It should only continue to become more complex and softer over the next four to six years. Drink by 2028.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
