Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

2020 Hurley Lodestone Pinot NoirMornington Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 13.1%Closure: Diam CorkOther Reviews....
In cooler vintages, Lodestone appears to step up a notch. The lightest hue of the 3 single-site pinots. While the fruit is destemmed, there’s an attractive herbal, almost stemmy, character and it's a finer rendition overall. Light cherry accents – both sweet and tart – red roses, ferrous and earthy. It’s often a powerful, rich wine but not here, it feels lighter framed, with grainy tannins, lots of tangy acidity and plenty of refreshment. Drink by 2027.

Jane Faulkner - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (January 2022)Notes from producer....
The fruit was harvested by hand on 18 March 2020, fermented under the action of indigenous yeasts, basket pressed on 10 April 2020 and, after twenty months in barrel (one quarter new), bottled on 2 November 2021. Medium ruby in colour. The intense and pure nose has black cherries and cassis with crushed nuts and an overtone of sage. The luscious palate has flavours in the same fruity-nutty-herbal range and fine, soft drying tannins. A precise line of fine acidity drives the wine towards a long, flaring finish. As with all three of these wines, the oak plays only a best-supporting role.

2020 Hurley Hommage Pinot NoirMornington Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 13.3%Closure: Diam CorkOther Reviews....
All 3 single-site pinots were made in ’20, but not the Estate blend, because no barrels were declassified and it was a low-yielding season. Hommage has turned out incredibly floral, with pink blossom and roses. A slight whiff of VA, menthol, morello and pink cherries and woodsy spices work across the barely medium-bodied palate. The tannins are lightly raspy, yet open-knit and there’s plenty of acidity. It needs hearty fare to show its best side. Drink by 2028.

The fruit was also harvested by hand on 18 March 2020, fermented under the action of indigenous yeasts, basket pressed on 11 April 2020 and, after twenty months in barrel (one quarter new), bottled on 2 November 2021. Also medium ruby. The pure, tart, wine-gummy nose has blue berries, blackberries and red currents complexed by notes of disturbed clay, charcuterie and crushed nuts. The satiny medium-weighted palate tastes intensely of those squishy fruits and also mortadella. The structure is linear and taut but not lean and is carried through by bright acidity to a persistent, fruitful, drying back palate. Interestingly, the charcuterie quality is present from start to finish.

2020 Hurley Garamond Pinot NoirMornington Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 13.1%Closure: Diam CorkOther Reviews....
If you’re expecting a structured and powerful Garamond, which is usually part of its makeup, 2020 didn’t deliver such a wine. Instead, this is an elegant, finer rendition, led by tangy acidity rather than its tannins, which are grainy yet defined. Lots of perfume from native mint, eucalyptus, baking spices and pepper, to flavours of blood orange, chinotto, black cherries and Campari. Drink by 2028.

The fruit was harvested by hand on 20 March 2020, fermented under the action of indigenous yeasts, basket pressed on 11 April 2020 and, after twenty months in barrel (one quarter new), bottled on 2 November 2021.
For me, a palate needs four things in balanced proportion a la the terroir of the vineyard concerned: pure, well-defined and ripe aromas and flavours; linearity, precision and order (structure); a pleasing texture in the fine satin-silk range; and a clean, ever-lingering and preferably flaring finish. This kind of palate combines smell, taste, feel, line and length in a carefully balanced frame. I find these qualities in this Garamond. It is bright ruby in colour. The dreamy, other-worldly, red-rose of a nose has raspberries, currents, cherries and almonds with flowers and talc. The medium-weight palate has pure and intense flavours of all of the above plus a texture of silk that comes from finely-grained tannins. Racy acidity drives this energetic wine to an ultra-long, widely-flaring, contemplative coda. Alc/vol 13.1%. -

The most approachable in its youth thanks to supple tannins and its overall plushness. Loaded with woodsy spices, spiced red berries and cherries, the fruit sweetness sashaying across the palate to a refreshing finish. It doesn't have the presence and depth on the palate as Lodestone and Garamond, but lovely nonetheless.

Made by Kevin Bell. MV6 pinot. Matured for 20 months in oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Single vineyard release named after the famous font. Garamond. It’s a beautiful word in itself.
Elegant power. It looks light but it has presence. It presents a myriad of autumnal, spice-strewn flavours but the fruit is ripe and racy. A spot of reduction, a slip of smoky oak, undergrowth notes beavering away beneath. This is impressive. There’s a macerated feel to the fruit but there’s still a great deal going on. This is arguably the best Garamond I’ve tasted. In the tannin I see finesse. Excellent signs everywhere. Drink 2020-2028.

Philip Rich - James Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionLike the Chardonnay, fruit is sourced from around the valley and is a mix of clones. Its bouquet is distinct as soon as you open the bottle, with some ripe confectionery notes which fall away to reveal a pretty and refined base of fruit. Black and red cherry mix with strawberry and raspberry, with the flowery goodness of violets and a touch of stemmy savouriness appearing after some air. On the palate, there is pronounced fruit sweetness, giving the wine much vitality, with some tongue-tingling minerality adding some more depth. Another very enjoyable wine from winemaker Anthony Fikkers.

The label has been (slightly) redesigned, though I don’t yet have access to the new image. The quality is still at the same level. 15% whole bunches. Sourced from a range of Yarra Valley sites.
It gets the balance right between elegance/finesse and having enough flesh to satisfy. It just feels right. Strawberry and stewed cherry flavours with sweet spice, woodsmoke and (modest) deli meat. It’s lifted and perfumed, especially once it’s had a chance to breathe, and its fine-grained tannin too has been managed to perfection. So it sucks you straight in but it then has the structure and form to impress beyond the immediate. I’m scoring it 92, I could easily be 93, but my main ‘score’ is to recommend that at $32 this is a definite ‘buy’. Drink 2022-2028+

Shiraz and pinot noir duke it out for top red wine spot in Beechworth and they're hard to separate, especially in a year like 2022. Pinot shines here, quite literally, in glistening red cherry hues. Off 1990s vines; the winemaking was the same as last year: indigenous ferment, 20% whole bunches, 10% new oak. Jane Eyre has had an extraordinary career so far, establishing herself in Burgundy, winning a swathe of accolades and drawing top reviews from the best in the business. The style of those wines is mirrored here, with elegance and transparency of expression key. Strawberry, red cherry, white pepper, kirsch, a waft of florals. It’s refined, stylish and all class. This is a blend of Chambertin itself (two-thirds) and one third Clos de Bèze. Glowing imperial crimson purple. The nose has it all, clearly all the nobility it should have. The crunchy mineral tension found throughout the Fourrier wines pays dividends here. There is exceptional intensity but it is beautifully judged. Some liquorice notes but above all an amazing intensity of fruit which lingers long.

Charming vibrant red purple. There is tension here not seen in Chambolle. This is a high-class nose, very intense, flirts with volatile but returns to a sense of precision, especially in comparison with the lush Bonnes Mares. This will be a classic Echezeaux with an excellent long fresh red fruit finish.

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru has also turned out well, offering up scents of ripe cherries, berries, smoked meats and rich soil tones. Full-bodied, ample and multidimensional, it's layered and nicely concentrated. If my speculations about the provenance of this négociant cuvée are correct, Fourrier deserves all the more praise for rendering what is probably the best wine produced from these holdings in this vintage.

There are 8,000 bottles of the 2018 Bourgogne Rouge, a cuvée intended to offer consumers an affordable taste of the domaine's wines. Bursting with a rich bouquet of ripe cherries, candied peel and plums, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with powdery tannins and an open, expressive profile.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2020)From purchased grapes in the Côte de Nuits, the 2018 Bourgogne Rouge has a slightly tarry bouquet of ripe summer fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, fine acidity and a slightly compact finish. Give it a year once in bottle.

Neal Martin - VinousSome is domaine, some bought in from Fixin and Nuits-St-Georges for a substantial cuvée which can reach 20,000 bottles. Lighter colour and on the less ripe side. Hard to taste after the domaine grand cru, it must be said! Medium length with attractive fruit.

Notes of cherries, berries, licorice, spices and incense introduce the 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, muscular and youthfully chewy wine that's a little firm and compact at this stage, though I suspect it will flesh out with further élevage.
90-92 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2020)The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a decadent bouquet of red cherry and cranberry aromas, touches of pain d’épices and a hint of menthol emerging with time. But somehow it manages to retain control. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, slightly chalky tannins, good depth and a gentle grip toward the focused finish. This should age extremely well.
93-95 points
Neal Martin - VinousFrom the Champ Traversin sector. Intense fine purple in colour, with a bouquet that has avoided the heat of the summer and is rather more strict, fresh and crisp in style. Dark fruit, crystalline, complex and the finish maintains this comparative austerity.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
