Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot produce exceptional Burgundy, yet are still firmly under the radar for many collectors. Given they enjoy an enviable collection of six Grand Cru vineyards, and the expert winemaking skills shown by the talented Thomas Colladot, Coquard Loison-Fleurot won't remain hidden for long.

For many years the grapes from the property were sold to negociants, however as these contracts begun to expire in the early 2000's they started taking back the production, and brought on Thomas Colladot in 2010 to oversee winemaking duties. While not certified, organic practices are used in the vineyards, with all fruit hand harvested and whole cluster fermentation used where and as desired depending on the plot and vintage conditions. New oak varies between 30-50% for most wines, and élevage lasts between 15 and 18 months, before bottling is conducted in-house. The wines of Coquard Loison-Fleurot are characterised by their purity and transparency of their terroirs.

The 2022 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has an open and expressive bouquet with brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor scents, with a hint of morels in the background. It is not as opulent as the Clos de la Roche, though it conveys more Pinoté. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit. Smooth in texture with a dab of dark chocolate and vanilla, imparting a soupçon of exoticism towards the finish. Moderate length. A delicious Grands Echézeaux that might drink younger than some of "CFL's" other Grand Crus but certainly has the substance to mature in bottle. Drink 2027-2055.

More of a crimson purple, raspberry seedless, taken a bit of oak, but superlative nonetheless and exceptionally long. Completely mouth filling with great charm, fills all the nooks and crannies. An excellent balance between the fruit acidity and tannins. Still going strong in my mouth several minutes later! Drink from 2032-2040.

Ripe, fresh and restrained aromas are comprised by notes of red and dark currant, plum, a similar variety of spice elements and pretty floral nuances. I very much like the texture of the delicious medium-bodied flavors that aren't super dense but do possess good power and plenty of minerality while displaying excellent depth and length on the balanced finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. One aspect that makes this so seductive is that the finish, while certainly built-to-age, has a lovely natural sweetness to it that renders it hard to resist. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Village leans more towards red fruit on the nose, freshly tilled loam filtering through the raspberry and wild strawberry scents, though it needs a little more cohesion to develop during its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with a pretty entry. Fine tannins, quite mineral-driven with that tickle of Pinoté on the finish. Delightful. Drink 2026-2036.

Similar glowing purple, this time with a spicier nose. An excellent core of predominantly raspberry fruit, a fine core to this throughout, with a little oak at the finish. Not quite so striking as the Morey but a lovely glass in the offing. Drink from 2028-2034.

This is also attractively fresh and bright with its cool and airy nose of the essence of wild red berries, forest floor and a whiff of the sauvage. Once again there is fine volume to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that possess focused power and almost no rusticity on the impressively long and complex finale. This is an excellent Gevrey villages and worth considering. Drink through 2030+.

Raised with 20% whole bunches, the 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru showed a little reduction on the nose, but there seems to be plenty of concentration here. The medium-bodied palate offers ripe black fruit laced with orange rind and veins of dark chocolate, probably emanating from the 50% new oak. It's a solid Echézeaux that might lack a bit of flair, though it will mature well in bottle. Drink 2028-2040.

Just as deep a purple colour but more elegance on the nose, less obviously and immediately sumptuous. Wavelets of alpine strawberry and its raspberry equivalent dance across the palate, super fine, with startling elegance. Another 2022 beauty from Thomas. Drink from 2030-2038.

Classic deep ruby color. The exuberantly spicy and ultra-nose displays the essence of red cherry and cool floral scents. There is both fine volume and punch to the beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that offer fine length on the youthfully austere finish that is supported by fine-grained tannins. This could use better depth but that should just be a matter of appropriate cellaring. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is raised in 50% new oak with 15% whole bunches. This feels a little muted on the nose compared to the other Grand Crus at the moment, despite coaxing from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry. Good body and weight. There’s slightly peppery red fruit with blood orange and hints of curry leaf towards the finish that has more gusto than the current aromatics. Be patient here - this Clos Vougeot has something up its sleeve. Drink 2029-2050.

A rich deep purple, super saturated, with a bouquet to match. A full and firm structure with Thomas Collardot’s abundant fruit flowing over the top. A darker fruit with a blackberry note, but not the mulberry which would imply over-ripeness. The 20% whole bunch vinification adds an additional freshness, a slight salinity which works very well. Drink from 2032-2040.

Here too there is enough wood to notice framing the markedly floral-suffused nose with its notes of lavender, rose petal, violet and acacia blossom that add breadth to the elegant and cool red berry scents. The super-sleek and moderately dense flavors retain fine delineation on the dusty, youthfully austere and persistent finale where a touch of wood slowly reemerges. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is the most reticent on the nose, painfully shy despite coaxing from its shell. Touches of cold stone and a light estuarine tang. The medium-bodied palate has quite fine tannins, very pure and tensile, sporting dark cherries mixed with Indian spices and pain d'epices. There’s fine length, though the Clos de la Roche has a notch more flair. Drink 2029-2060.

A bright pink edge to the purple. Very striking, very immediate, totally red fruit, very convincing essence of raspberry, with some ripe redcurrants behind. Fills the mouth, not quite the same intensity at the back as the Clos de la Roche but the Clos St-Denis does have quality finesse at the finish. Drink from 2030-2038.

A completely different nose offers up much spicier aromas of red currant, exotic tea and a similar hint of violet. There is excellent vibrancy to the attractively textured middleweight flavors that don't have the power of the Clos de la Roche but do offer slightly better depth and precision on the lingering finale that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the gorgeously well-balanced finale. This is a stunner of a CSD. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak with 20% whole bunches, has an entrancing, beautifully defined bouquet with mineral-rich black fruit, becoming ever more floral in the glass: rose bush and iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit laced with orange sorbet and allspice, building confidence towards its ripe and quite spicy finish. With fine persistence on the aftertaste, this represents a very impressive Clos de la Roche. Drink 2029-2060.

A glowing fresh purple. Not reduction but just a mineral flinty top note above the fruit. Sitting back on its haunches but this lack of immediacy makes it even finer. All at the back of the palate and then additional waves come through thereafter, blue fruit indeed. So subtle yet striking as well Drink from 2032-2040.

Discreet but not imperceptible wood sets off distinctly earthy aromas of plum, red currant, spice and a whisper of violet. There is both good volume and a lovely sense of purity to the caressing yet quite powerful middleweight plus flavors that exude evident minerality on the hugely long, balanced and mildly austere finale. This is terrific and highly recommended. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a more generous and expressive bouquet than the Clos de Vougeot: black cherries and wild strawberries, just a bit of reduction to wade through at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid, quite structured entry. Grippy in the mouth, a solid Mazoyères-like Charmes with a dash of peppercorns on the finish. Solid and a bit unyielding at the moment; this is one to cellar for several years before broaching. Drink 2030-2058.

The fine deep colour goes without saying. Immediate raspberry and strawberry fruit thrusts itself to the front. Fresh dark berries, less explosive than Clos Vougeot, all tightly wound with an impressive intensity. There was enough to make two cuves which will be blended together. A fine and even mid purple, with a gently charm to the nose, this is not too forceful though it certainly has plenty of energy on the palate. The barrel adds grip to the persistent finish. Drink from 2027-2033.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, whose malolactic finished at the beginning of September, matured in 25-30% new oak, has a much more defined and fresher nose than the Bourgogne Rouge with lively black cherry and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is ripe and sweet, yet nicely controlled, the oak neatly integrated with quite a precocious tart finish. Maybe it just needs a little more persistency, but this will do nicely. (This blend includes 20% whole bunch. I tried a 40% whole bunch that is being trialled in three barrels. I actually preferred this, so it will either be blended together or bottled separately - no decision has been made yet.) Drink 2025-2038.

Black with a bit of purple. The bouquet offers a similar style of ultra lush raspberry that we saw in the Bourgogne. An explosion of fruit, with density, some firm structure behind, not too much acidity but all a cohesive unit with enough fruit to cover the 13.8% alcohol. An early malolactic makes this wine easier to read.

This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it's enough to knock down the nose. More interesting are the rich, vibrant and intense larger-scaled flavors that possess very good mid-palate concentration before terminating in an even firmer, powerful and impressively long quality. The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru had only finished its malolactic two weeks before my visit. Though I spent time with the sample from barrel, I think it was just a bit too soon to really get a reading on the nose. The palate is more expressive and harmonious: crunchy black cherry and blueberry fruit, fine structure, a touch of white pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle because there is a fine Charmes-Chambertin here. Drink 2026-2048.

A vivid and vibrant fresh purple, reflecting the low pH (3.30). The nose is exuberant and vivacious at the same time. This is a late malolactic wine and has been reduced, but not today. Despite the thick texture and super charged raspberry, signs of higher alcohol (in fact 15%) I don’t feel any specific heat and the Charmes-Chambertin shows a pretty long finish.

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very pure and quite precocious bouquet with black cherries, crushed violet and peony aromas, actually not unlike a Romanée-Saint-Vivant in style. The Clos Vougeot has just finished malolactic so is difficult to read. Perhaps the deepest darkest colour of the cellar. The nose is very backward, blackcurrant and elderberry with very dark raspberry. Slightly dry tannins but I put that down to the late malolactic. Peppery notes here.

It is exceptionally rare to happen upon a new Burgundy domaine that is both set for greatness and firmly under the radar in equal measure. Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot (CLF) is such a property, however given they enjoy an enviable collection of six Grand Cru vineyards, and the exceptional winemaking skills shown by the talented Thomas Colladot, CLF won't remain hidden for long.

The wines of Domaine Coquard Loison Fleurot are characterised by their purity and transparency of their terroirs.

A wonderfully expressive and broad-ranging nose displays notes of black cherry and raspberry coulis, spice, violet and sandalwood. The exceptionally rich and unusually full-bodied flavors brim with dry extract while exhibiting excellent power on the mouth coating, balanced and complex finale that goes on and on. I very much like the outstanding persistence and this is an impressive Ech. Drink from 2035+.

The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru offers real intensity on the nose, quite powerful with pure dark cherries, cassis, crushed violet and blood orange. Stylistically, this is not unlike Thomas Collardot’s good friend, Sébastien Cathiard’s in style. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, veins of blood orange and a pinch of sea salt. Lovely structure and focus on the finish. Excellent - this is an Echézeaux from the top drawer. Drink 2026-2050.

23 barrels – lucky man! Inky purple black, in colour. Starts a bit blockbuster for Echezeaux, then refines somewhat. Still, this is not for the fainthearted. Quite firm tannins but ripe enough. Decent weight behind, but this is still unresolved. A few blackberries though predominantly red fruit. 13.8% alcohol. Note that the malolactic for this wine was fairly late, taking place in the summer.

There is a top note of kirsch to the earthier and spicier aromas of red and dark berry liqueur. The delicious, round and caressing flavors possess very good punch while exuding a refreshing salinity on the dusty and palate coating finale. Drink from 2027+.

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Village, which contains around 15% whole bunch, had only finished its malo a month prior to my visit. It has a dense, intense, blackcurrant and cassis-scented bouquet that will need time to mellow. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and fleshy but the black cherry fruit is framed by fine tannins and the finish is so silky smooth that you cannot help falling for its charms. Drink 2025-2040.

3 new barrels in 11. Just as deep and dark purple, with a powerful nose that is nonetheless a little bit less lush. Only a bit though as the very dark fruit takes over with firm tannins and good acidity, or even salinity. Blacker fruit all round compared to the Chambolle. 14% alcohol

As one might expect, this possesses the spiciest nose to this point with its wonderfully floral red berry fruit aromas. The borderline painfully intense flavors possess a super-sleek and chiseled mouthfeel that is akin to rolling small rocks around the mouth on the dusty, moderately austere, compact and built-to-age finale. Once again, the amphore demonstrates its advantages in very ripe vintages as the nose is appealingly fresh with an even spicier array of plum, violet, anise and cinnamon scents. Medium deep crimson purple, the bouquet is soft and ripe, at this stage I think I may be preferring the barrel. The first sample, served blind in the pairing of Clos des 60 Ouvrées. Fractionally the lighter colour. The nose is significantly ripe with some dark plum fruit. An airy, cool and slightly more elegant nose isn't quite as spicy, but it is certainly higher-toned with its combination of red and dark currant, cherry and discreetly floral-suffused aromas. Healthy dark red. Aromas of purple berries, black cherry and licorice convey a musky quality as well as a subtle liqueur-like aspect. Fat and very ripe but not a sweet style; in fact, this is less expressive and complex than Landanger's other two amphora wines in 2016. Suggestions of black pepper and herbs carry through to the finish, which conveys an impression of thickness but is still quite primary and undeveloped, even a bit pinched. Here I much prefer the "regular" version of 60 Ouvrées.

Racked this morning. Quite a dense purple. Definitely the darker side of raspberry on the nose. A concentrated dark raspberry fruit with plenty of pepper notes behind, adding counterpoint to the ripe fruit which surges back at the finish. A racily fresh purple, with a bouquet full of floral energy, as was the village Vougeot. Again, I could imagine whole bunches but there are none. Two and a half barrels, one new, with 100% whole bunches. Both these elements show a little in the very youthful wine. Otherwise the nose is discretion itself, before the fruit explodes in magical fashion at the start of the palate. Yet is there quite the weight and persistence of a truly great wine? De Montille owns a magnificent 1.26-hectare parcel in Beaune Grèves just south of Bouchard's Baby Jesus, planted in iron and clay soils over sandy limestone. The vines delivered a complex, compelling wine in 2022: a ripe, plummy fruit with a savoury, gamey edge and a firm, saline undercurrent. The 2020 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru comes from two parcels is 90% whole cluster. Brambly red berry fruit is mingling with black pepper, clove and touches of undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with quite succulent tannins, more rondeur here than the other Volnays, plush and quite luxuriant wiht a sensual and very pure finish. Superb. Drink 2025-2048.

90% whole cluster. Imperial purple. This wine has the ideal balance between whole bunch freshness and the fruit of the vintage, which does not have an exaggerated ripeness here. Tight firm finish, crunchy with dry tannins which should resolve without difficulty given a little time.

This is also ripe while managing to remain cool and airy with its combination of plum, violet, anise and newly turned earth wisps. The delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors possess solid mid-palate density that contrasts somewhat with the austere and lingering finish where the tannins are presently slightly raspy. Very erratic rows here, I am told, so it is ploughed by horse. 13% alcohol, 3.65pH, one third whole cluster. I loved the bouquet of this wine which has ethereal qualities. Then, on the palate, I found it a little less concentrated than I was expecting. It will still be a delicious wine though, in the medium term.

Domaine de Villaine, nestled in the village of Bouzeron in the Côte Chalonnaise, is renowned for crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines. Founded by Aubert de Villaine, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, the estate focuses on organic viticulture and minimal intervention, producing standout expressions of Aligoté Doré, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Aubert de Villaine handed over management to his nephew Pierre de Benoist in 2000, with Pierre passionate about rediscovering the identity of the Côte Chalonnaise as a whole and of Bouzeron in particular. These wines embody purity, precision, and a deep respect for Burgundy’s traditions.

The 2022 Mercurey Les Montots has a fragrant bouquet of chalk-tinged red fruit, raspberry and cranberry, with a touch of smoke and undergrowth emerging with time. A man of the vineyards, Arnaud Mortet is driven to produce perfect Pinot fruit from meticulously tended vineyards. He is without question one of the finest growers of the entire Côte and as great wines are the products of great fruit, it is no coincidence that he is producing some of the finest wines in Burgundy today. There is no doubt that the wines are more refined than those produced while his father was alive, yet they share the same intensity and potential longevity. Arnaud is continuing Denis' dream of producing more refined wines, openly getting closer stylistically to the wines of his uncle, Charles Rousseau, without sacrificing depth and intensity or consistency across the range.

Admirably discreet wood influence can be found on the markedly cooler and more restrained yet wonderfully diverse aromas of various dark berries, plum, violet, leather and whispers of the sauvage. There is excellent volume to the dense, powerful and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that flash a taut muscularity on the youthfully austere, lengthy and expressly built-to-age finale. This is a ripe but classically style LSJ that should amply reward extended keeping. Drink through 2035+.

Once again there is plenty of floral influence present on the ripe and fresh nose of wild red and dark berries along with plenty of earth and humus nuances. There is excellent volume and richness to the powerful and sappy larger-scaled flavors that also possess a beguiling texture on the lingering and balanced finale that is less austere than usual. The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, matured with 50% whole bunch and 20% new oak, from parcels just below Château de la Tour on more gravelly soils. This has a broody bouquet, more bashful and closed at the moment, compared to Mortet’s other cuvées. That will open in time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite saline with a white and black pepper on the strict but quite compelling finish. Sophisticated, but it will need time. Drink 2027-2055.

Noticeable wood is present on the super-spicy and floral nose of layered red and blue pinot fruit aromas. The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a very delineated, quite floral bouquet with rose petal infusing the mixture of red and black fruit. There is a touch of sous-bois that become accentuated with time. The palate is fleshy and almost confit-like on the entry, but the acidity keeps this on an even keel. A slightly riper and exuberantly spicy nose is composed by notes of black cherry, dark raspberry, the sauvage and a whiff of earth. A darker purple than the Charmes or Latricières. Power on the nose, this is a big boy this year which isn’t always the case – the Faiveley Mazis can be more floral in some years. Here too there is a mentholated top note to the much earthier aromas of poached plum, underbrush, red currant and touches of the sauvage. There is excellent verve to the equally broad-shouldered and muscular flavors that possess outstanding complexity on the tannic, serious and beautifully long finish that is a bit less austere than it usually is at this early juncture. The 2019 Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru comes from the 2.77-hectare monopole. This was actually quite closed on the nose compared with Faiveley’s Gevrey Grand Crus, coming across earthy and rather sullen at first, and opening with earthy/woodland aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and harmonious on the entry. The fine, lightly spiced finish reveals clove and touches of graphite. Nice persistence here. This holds a lot of promise.

Very dense red purple, lively though, and holds up after the sensuality of Clos de Bèze. Stricter. The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Goulots is the first to be completely biodynamically farmed, although Florence told me that she only really noticed the difference apropos the color of the grapes in the 2016 vintage. It has a complex bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry and blood orange, very focused with deftly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little meatiness/dried blood developing underneath the carapace of black fruit, white pepper and Moroccan spice towards the finish. I love the tension here, not powerful but it just has the energy you would not anticipate from such a warm season.

While the wood treatment is a bit more evident it still remains a background element on the ripe but airy nose of spicy, floral and earthy red berry fruit aromas. The elevation of the vineyards is especially noticeable in a ripe vintage like 2015 as the medium weight flavors display plenty of minerality and a racy energy that carries over to the saline finish that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins. Lovely juice.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
