2023 Domaine d'Eugenie Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulees Premier Cru

Domaine d'Eugenie was created in 2006 when Francois Pinault acquired the former Domaine Rene Engel in Vosne-Romanee. With Frederic Engerer overseeing the estate (alongside his work at Chateau Latour), d'Eugenie has quickly established itself as a serious player in the Cote de Nuits. The domaine farms 6.5 hectares across Vosne, Clos Vougeot, Grands Echezeaux and Echezeaux, and the style emphasises precision, refinement, and vineyard transparency.

Bordering Richebourg, Aux Brulees is a premier cru of real class, producing wines with depth and aromatic intensity. The d'Eugénie version shows both power and refinement.

The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru, matured in five new barrels out of nine and includes 50% whole bunch. That decision works out because I find the stem ratio proportionate to the fruit—more would have risked overwhelming the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, silky-smooth texture, fine acidity and a harmonious, poised finish. Vivid and alluring. Drink 2027-2047.

50% whole bunch vinification was possible after significant triage. Four new barrels in nine. A fine deep crimson ruby colour. The bouquet is reserved, with concentration, but ungiving as yet. The Brûlées starts to sing on the palate, especially towards the back with a wealth of ripe red cherry, a touch of useful acidity, and some little red berries as well. Medium plus length, still an embryo. Drink from 2030-2036.
