While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru is a success, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of cherries, cassis, candied peel and incense, framed by some spicy new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerful, with satiny tannins, an ample core of fruit, succulent acids and a long, oak-inflected but persistent finish. This shows considerable promise. Drink 2024 - 2055.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (May 2019)Once again moderate wood is present on the more obviously menthol-infused aromas of red currant, cherry, Asian-style spice and a hint of dried orange peel. The middle weight flavors also possess a highly seductive mid-palate mouthfeel that contrasts considerably with the rustic, warm and slightly disjointed finish. As the description suggests this is somewhat awkward today but the underlying material appears to be present such that there is a reasonable chance that ultimately it will harmonize.

This is extremely ripe yet manages to remain fresh with its well-layered nose of wood, mocha, black raspberry liqueur, Asian-style tea and wide range of spice elements. There is a sleek, indeed even satiny mouth feel to the imposingly concentrated big-bodied flavors that are opulent yet focused, all wrapped in a strikingly long, balanced and complex finale. Impressive and worth checking out.

The 2014 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from 1.44-hectares of 40- to 68-year-old vine and is matured entirely in new oak. It has a clean, pure and quite intense bouquet with dark plum, raspberry and rose petals scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good depth, a slight earthiness underneath the dark berry fruit mixed with black pepper and sage, fanning out gently towards the sturdy, truffle-tinged finish. Give this several years in the cellar, because it is a very well crafted and sophisticated Grands-Echézeaux. Drink 2016-2031.

Neal Martin - Robert Parker Wine Advocate #224 (Apr 2016)An attractively fresh and layered nose presents a spicy array of red and dark currant that is trimmed in discreet wood and floral wisps. There is excellent punch and delineation to the supple and velvety flavors that terminate in a youthfully austere finish that offers a bit more depth and length. While this is not especially dense there is better concentration compared to that of the Clos de Vougeot or Echézeaux. Drink through 2024+.

This is very generously wooded with ample toast and menthol nuances fighting somewhat with the gorgeously spicy and floral-scented nose that combines notes of dark berry liqueur, cassis, anise and pekoe tea. The impressively rich, full-bodied and mineral-driven flavors display huge length on the well-balanced finish that displays knock-out complexity. This is on the woody side today but the underlying material is almost certain to successfully integrate it in time.

Deep slightly cloudy dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Alluring and complex the nose features perfumed like aromatics of spicy dark cherries infused with violets, ripe strawberry and hints of sour cherries. Some anise, vanillin cedar, subtle dried herbs and light forest floor notes are also present. A whiff of game meats then begins to appear. Delicious red to dark fruits in conjunction with a supple mouth feel make for a very approachable Echezeaux. An expansive power wave of flavour covering the full breadth of the palate with underlying anise, vanillin cedar, forest floor, dried herbs, a gentle meatiness and spice. Silky yet structured tannins with a very long aftertaste of great persistence.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

A brooding if moderately oaky nose grudgingly reveals its aromas of fresh black cherry and violet plus and lovely range of spice facets. There is a more refined if less powerful mouthfeel to the medium weight and tautly muscular flavors that possess slightly better depth on the more structured and youthfully austere finish. This beauty is built to age and is going to need it.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundI tasted various component parts of this flagship cuvée, but here is the note on the blend, which as so often was greater than the sum of its parts. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2015 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Gravains possesses the most vivacious and animated bouquet of Pavelot's 2015s: red cherries, crushed strawberry, iodine and hints of black plum later on. The 2015 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Dominodes is cut from the same cloth as the Aux Gravains, albeit with more floral scents and more red fruit. Neil Martin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 2020 Domaine Pierre Boisson Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Beaune RougeBurgundy, FRANCE$115. 00Bottle$1380.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: Cork
Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.
Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.
The fruit for this wine comes from the two Haute Cotes vineyards of ‘Les Chaignots’ in Orches, and ‘Sous la Velle’ in Baubigny.

Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.
Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.
Along with Rugiens, Les Grands Epenots is considered the best Premier Cru in Pommard and the soil here is slightly richer than Petits Epenots, with high levels of iron. Average vine age in these plots is over 50 years old, and the wine is fermented with 100% whole cluster before aging in barrel (30% new) for 12 months plus four months in stainless steel.
Please note: due to the winery packaging, we often receive these wines from the distributor with marks on the front label. These are usually minor, however they are unavoidable.

2021 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$650. 00Bottle$7800.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkThere's no doubt that if Domaine Robert Chevillon were based in Vosne-Romanee or Chambolle-Musigny, their wines would be next to impossible to find and sell for exorbitant prices. That they are found in Nuits-Saint-Georges, a village with no grand cru sites, has allowed these wines to fly under the radar for many consumers. That said, these are some of the most accomplished wines of Burgundy, and best of all continually produce wines that seemingly ignore any challenges a vintage might throw their way to achieve results seen only at very few of the finest addresses across the Cote.
Now under the stewardship of Robert Chevillon's sons Bertrand and Denis, these passionate pair of vignerons are tireless in their pursuit of the finest expression of Pinot Noir possible. After meticulous care in the vineyards across the year, grapes are hand harvested, sorted and de-stemmed before receiving a cold maceration in vats for 5-6 days and natural fermentation lasting 2-3 weeks. Maturation lasts from 15 to 18 months in a mix of 30% new and 70% second use barrels.
Les Saint-Georges is the most lauded Premier Cru site in the commune, lending its name to the town of Nuits in the 1890's to become the full Nuits-Saint-Georges we know today. As the de facto Grand Cru vineyard, Les Saint-Georges is on the gentle mid-slope with varied and complex limestone soils. Wines from Les Saint-Georges are rich, full, complex, and have an enviable track record for longevity in the cellar.

2020 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$650. 00Bottle$7800.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkThere's no doubt that if Domaine Robert Chevillon were based in Vosne-Romanee or Chambolle-Musigny, their wines would be next to impossible to find and sell for exorbitant prices.
Other Reviews....
There is just enough reduction to blur the nuance of what are clearly ripe aromas trimmed in just enough wood to notice. Otherwise, there is terrific energy to the mineral-driven and precise larger-scaled flavors that are at once sleek and powerful while exhibiting the usual youthful austerity on the gorgeously long, balanced and built-to-age finale. In a word, marvelous. Drink through 2038+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges opens in the glass with aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with warm spices, baking chocolate and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's gourmand and dramatic, with lively acids and ample reserves of powdery tannin.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 21, 2022)Black purple, the bouquet is very backward, but more importantly not at all cooked. Now the concentrated deep raspberry fruit starts to emerge, red rather than on the blacker side. Very succulent, a grand lush wine that is reserved at the moment, but this should develop into a stunner and may yet move into five star territory.

Les Vaucrains is located further up the slope from Les Saint-Georges and Les Cailles, and completes the trio of standout vineyards in Nuit-Saint-Georges. It's also the most powerful and concentrated wine in the range, and is shown after Les Saint-Georges when tasting at the Domaine. Chevillon's plot is on the lower portion of the vineyard, granting is some more depth of fruit than some other producers of Les Vaucrains.

A deft but still perceptible dollop of wood can be found on the ripe and very fresh nose of poached plum, black raspberry and plenty of sauvage nuances. The texture of the broad-shouldered flavors is also quite sleek with a relatively supple mid-palate that contrasts with the firm, youthfully austere and structured finale that displays huge length and ample minerality. This is also very much built to reward long-term cellaring and here too I would strongly suggest not touching a bottle for at least ten years. This is brilliant. Drink through 2038+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAromas of cassis, woodsmoke, wild berries, loamy soil, orange rind and spices introduce the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains, a full-bodied, layered and velvety wine that's deep, concentrated and elegantly muscular, with lively acids and rich, powdery structuring tannins. As usual, it's built for the long haul.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 21, 2022)An even deep rich purple colour. More open that Les St Georges, in a rich deep plummy character. Sweetness from the oak, an undoubted raft of concentrated dark fruit, the tannins are well behaved and there is great length. Probably a very good prospect.

The 2020 Bourgogne Rouge has a precise bouquet with commendable precision for a regional red, attractive rose petal scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh with good weight on the finish. For, me this is a level up from Passetoutgrain.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru is 100% whole bunch this year, matured in 25% new oak. Those stems lend a discrete pepper bass note to the wild cherry and bergamot top notes, well defined and poised. The palate is well balanced with crunchy red fruit, quite saline in the mouth and for a Chambolle, a little angular towards the finish. Yet there is great tension interwoven into this wine from start to finish and it should age with aplomb. Drink 2026-2050.

Neal Martin - Vinous80 year old vines grown on a clay soil which gets the afternoon sun, 13.5% alcohol, 100% whole bunch and 25% new wood. Another dense crimson purple colour. The bouquet has more of a fruit compote style. You can see the stems but they are more hidden in the fruit. There is a very substantial mouthful of plummy dark raspberry, good oak integration, plenty of spice and excellent persistence.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru comes from 80-years old vines that was harvest over five morning, one hour each day and vinified in the same vat of course. Blended with 50% whole bunch and matured in 25% new oak, it has a well-defined bouquet with rose petals, red berry fruit, just a very faint hints of menthol in the far distance. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh and vibrant, lightly spiced towards the finish that feels linear and strict. This Amoureuses does not want to give too much away at the moment but the length in the mouth cannot be denied and augurs well for the future. Drink 2027-2055.

Neal Martin - Vinous50% whole bunch, average age 40 years, old vines needed picking first. 25% new wood, 13.2% alcohol. Almost black with purple rim. The fruit comes across as more noble than the already delicious Bonnes Mares. The stem profile just adds a liveliness, not its own flavour. This is really beautiful on the palate, just the right acidity, waves of fruit keep rolling across the palate, a little touch of orange peel, no reason why this should not become a really great bottle of Amoureuses.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is aged in 25% new oak with 50% whole bunches. Matured in 25% new oak and 90% whole bunches, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru is the most opulent of Groffier’s 2019s with kirsch and orange zest infusing the red berry fruit. The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix 1er Cru comes from 80-year-old vines, this blend including 50% whole bunches. It has a powerful nose with iris and sous-bois aromas infusing the predominantly black fruit. Neal Martin - VinousThis is a mineral terroir, Nicolas tells me, “sunny and luminous but not hot”. He has vinified the 2019 Hauts Doix with 50% whole bunches and 20% new wood. It has a bright mid purple colour, is very perfumed in bouquet, with a magical weight of dark raspberry fruit. There is a little touch of the whole bunches on the nose, more at the finish where it delivers a fresher, indeed mineral feel, while it is the main body of the just ripe fruit which fills out the middle palate. Toasty oak to finish.

A very Vosne-like nose is comprised by notes of plum, violet, exotic spice and a whiff of jasmine tea. A whiff of herbal tea sits atop a mélange of spicy and very pretty red cherry, currant, violet and lavender. The rich and relatively generously proportioned flavors possess solid concentration as well as a refined texture, all wrapped in an intensely saline-inflected finale that exhibits fine length. There is a mild touch of warmth but otherwise, this is really quite fine, indeed even finer than usual. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey has turned out very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, orange oil, burning embers and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, ample and perfumed, with supple, powdery tannins and a concentrated core of fruit, underpinned by a lively spine of acidity, it will reward some bottle age. Drink 2025 - 2045.

A cool, pure, airy and restrained nose combines a really lovely spiciness with notes of black raspberry, wild strawberry and exotic Asian tea. The super-sleek and utterly delicious middle weight flavors offer excellent power and drive while displaying outstanding length on the intensely saline-inflected and youthfully austere finish. This is not a monster of concentration but I really like the balance.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe most reserved premier cru in the cellar is, as usual, the 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts. Opening in the glass with scents of dark berry fruit, plums, exotic spices, dark chocolate, smoked meats and burning embers, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, displaying exquisite structural refinement and superb concentration, concluding with a long, fragrant finish. There are 16 barrels this year.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has the most cerebral nose of any Cathiard Premier Cru, scents of black fruit intermingling with ash, sous-bois and light iodine scents. It also seems the most mercurial in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, unerring symmetry and a killer sense of symmetry that is utterly beguiling. It is endowed with the backbone one expects from a Malconsorts and a persistence all of its own. Heavenly.

2018 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$850. 00Bottle$10200.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
In the same fashion as the En Orveaux reduction dominates but pretty spice elements escape the funk to suggest that when the nose cleans up this should be lovely. As is usually the case, the medium-bodied flavors offers more body and richness but not the same finesse or minerality while delivering equally good punch and power on the strikingly long finish. This beauty should be first-rate in time.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundUnfurling to reveal aromas of dark berries, plums and spices mingled with rich soil tones and dark chocolate, Cathiard's 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is medium to full-bodied, broad and enveloping, with a generous core of fruit, velvety tannins and a long, pure finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a gorgeous bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit and more sous-bois aromas than the En Orveaux; touches of sage and pressed flowers emerge with time, adding more and more complexity. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy red fruit and gentle grip in the mouth. Quite structured for a Les Suchots, with a stunning, lightly spiced, energetic finish that has more vivacity than it knows what to do with. Fabulous.

2018 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Thorey Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$440. 00Bottle$5280.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Once again there is enough reduction present to knock down the fruit though it does seem ripe. More interesting are the vibrant, intense and highly refined medium weight flavors that also culminate in an austere, serious and very firm finish that offers notably better depth and persistence. With that said, I underscore that at least some patience will be necessary.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundOffering up notes of wild berries, peonies and spices, framed by rich soil tones and a deft touch of oak, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep core of fruit, lively acids and a beautifully defined finish.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru felt a little subdued when I tasted it from barrel; perhaps it is closing down more quickly than its siblings as the winter cold settles in the cellar. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins and a little angular at the moment, but there is ample freshness on the graphite-tinged finish. A more aloof and serious Aux Thorey than in the past. It will be fascinating to see how this shows once in bottle.

A strikingly spicy nose speaks of sandalwood, anise, violet and a hint of hoisin on the plum and black cherry-scented nose. The gorgeously textured and quite finely delineated middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the dusty, serious and built-to-age finish. This beauty will also benefit substantially from extended forbearance.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots soars from the glass with scents of ripe wild berries, orange rind, burning embers, peonies and rich soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with an open-knit and expressive core of fruit, framed by melting tannins and juicy acids. As usual, this is one of the most charming wines in the cellar.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru possesses a very harmonious, understated bouquet that gradually unfurls to reveal enticing black cherry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, later becoming more floral in style but always retaining a sense of control. The palate is extremely precise and very smooth. Perhaps this is the one cuvée from Cathiard where slightly earlier picking might have engendered more precision on the finish, which flirts with exotic notes, pulling back just in time. One for those who like a flamboyant Vosne-Romanée.

2018 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Murgers Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$480. 00Bottle$5760.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A softly spicy and very earthy nose speaks of a layered mix of both red and dark fruit elements. There is a highly beguiling inner mouth perfume to the appealingly textured and slightly bigger flavors that are shaped by firm but relatively fine tannins on the velvety and sappy finish. This is presently quite seductive but the structure is sufficiently prominent that I suspect that this will close down after bottling and require at least some patience before it will again be approachable. Good stuff.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers is showing brilliantly, bursting with aromas of cassis, licorice, grilled meats, sweet soil tones and black plums. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with a deep and multidimensional core of concentrated fruit, an ample chassis of powdery tannins and a long, sapid finish.
92-94 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru is more expressive on the nose compared to the Aux Thorey, with sumptuous fruit: cassis, blueberry and raspberry preserve, plus hints of fresh fig in the background. This is an NSG that wants to be noticed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins and a fine line of acidity. Quite structured, with a dense, rigid finish that (unlike the nose) suggests this should be cellared for several years. Impressive.

Background hints of oak set off the very spicy and attractively fresh aromas of red currant, dark raspberry and a whiff of sandalwood. I very much like the seductive texture and volume to the delicious, intense and well-detailed flavors that also terminate in a youthfully austere finish. If this can add depth with time in bottle it should merit the upper end of my projected range.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2018 Vosne-Romanée is showing beautifully, soaring from the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berries, plums and cherries mingled with sweet spices, woodsmoke, grilled squab and rich soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with fine concentration, lively acids and an expansive finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village, raised in around 25% new oak, has a very intense bouquet of black cherries and light iodine aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit tinged with graphite, leading to a precise finish that does not outstay its welcome. Very fine, but it will require three or four years in bottle.

A superbly spicy nose features ripe and very fresh aromas of plum, dark currant and once again nuances of exotic Asian tea. The lilting yet powerful and tautly muscular flavors possess even better density on the impeccably well-balanced finish that flashes a note of bitter pit fruit character. This is quite firm yet the overall impression is a wine of lace and grace.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAs usual, there are three barrels of Cathiard's 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, a stunning young wine that soars from the glass in a blaze of cassis, violets, orange rind, exotic spices, grilled meats and ripe plums. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and textural, with lively acids, prodigious concentration, powdery structuring tannins and a long, penetrating finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)There are three barrels of the 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru this year, two of them new and the third four years old. This was displaying some reduction at the time of my visit, although underneath there is intense black and red fruit plus a subtle marine influence of oyster shell and seaweed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent red cherries and raspberry laced with blood orange. It feels very tight, a little muscular in style, a Grand Cru that is built for the long term. But will it surpass the spellbinding Malconsorts?

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
