There's no doubt that if Domaine Robert Chevillon were based in Vosne-Romanee or Chambolle-Musigny, their wines would be next to impossible to find and sell for exorbitant prices. That they are found in Nuits-Saint-Georges, a village with no grand cru sites, has allowed these wines to fly under the radar for many consumers. That said, these are some of the most accomplished wines of Burgundy, and best of all continually produce wines that seemingly ignore any challenges a vintage might throw their way to achieve results seen only at very few of the finest addresses across the Cote.

Now under the stewardship of Robert Chevillon's sons Bertrand and Denis, these passionate pair of vignerons are tireless in their pursuit of the finest expression of Pinot Noir possible. After meticulous care in the vineyards across the year, grapes are hand harvested, sorted and de-stemmed before receiving a cold maceration in vats for 5-6 days and natural fermentation lasting 2-3 weeks. Maturation lasts from 15 to 18 months in a mix of 30% new and 70% second use barrels.

Les Vaucrains is located further up the slope from Les Saint-Georges and Les Cailles, and completes the trio of standout vineyards in Nuit-Saint-Georges. It's also the most powerful and concentrated wine in the range, and is shown after Les Saint-Georges when tasting at the Domaine. Chevillon's plot is on the lower portion of the vineyard, granting is some more depth of fruit than some other producers of Les Vaucrains.

Other Reviews....
A deft but still perceptible dollop of wood can be found on the ripe and very fresh nose of poached plum, black raspberry and plenty of sauvage nuances. The texture of the broad-shouldered flavors is also quite sleek with a relatively supple mid-palate that contrasts with the firm, youthfully austere and structured finale that displays huge length and ample minerality. This is also very much built to reward long-term cellaring and here too I would strongly suggest not touching a bottle for at least ten years. This is brilliant. Drink through 2038+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound

Aromas of cassis, woodsmoke, wild berries, loamy soil, orange rind and spices introduce the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains, a full-bodied, layered and velvety wine that's deep, concentrated and elegantly muscular, with lively acids and rich, powdery structuring tannins. As usual, it's built for the long haul.

An even deep rich purple colour. More open that Les St Georges, in a rich deep plummy character. Sweetness from the oak, an undoubted raft of concentrated dark fruit, the tannins are well behaved and there is great length. Probably a very good prospect.
