Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. Having underrated Rousseau's 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques from barrel, then from bottle, I'm happy to have a chance to redeem myself, as this wine is showing brilliantly after just a few years in bottle. Bursting with aromas of red berries, cherries, peonies and spices, framed by sapid bass notes of smoked meats, it's medium to full-bodied, with more mid-palate depth and intensity than was apparent just a year ago, built around melting tannins and succulent acids. Drink 2021-2041.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with red cherries, strawberry, orange blossom and hints of chai tea that develop with aeration. There is fine cohesion and focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry, lightly spiced and quite peppery for a Lavaux Saint-Jacques, building gradually in the mouth with quite a vibrant spicy, even a touch of curry leaf on the aftertaste. Drink 2020-2036.

Lavaux often shines in warmer years like 2017, thanks to the cooling influence of the nearby combe. The Rousseau family have three parcels in all, totalling 0.8ha, and they seem to have a special affinity with the premier cru. It's subtle, refreshing and ethereal, with crunchy acidity and minerality and sappy pomegranate and red cherry flavours. Drink 2024-2032.

The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru is very promising, unwinding in the glass with aromas of exotic spices, grilled meats, cherries, cassis, dark chocolate, licorice and loamy soil. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it was the most introverted, tightly wound wine in the cellar on the day of my visit. Broad-shouldered and elegantly muscular, it's bright and precise, concluding with a penetrating finish.

The reference standard in Chambertin. This is every bit the equal of the Clos de Bèze, if slightly less approachable young. Blended from four parcels including a cooler section near the southern end and another near the top of the slope, this gives a wine of incredible concentration if a bit reserved initially. Here, ripe berry fruit, a strong mineral/saline edge and a gamey note all emerge with time, and the texture is firm and tightly wound. This should age gracefully for the better part of a century. Drink 2029-2069.

This too evidences subtle wood influence on the ripe yet cool nose that combines notes of spice, earth and floral elements with those of dark berries and poached plum. There is excellent intensity to the full-bodied, concentrated and mineral-inflected flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering excellent depth and persistence on the beautifully balanced and imposingly powerful if decidedly compact finale. This strikingly pure effort is already Zen-like in its sense of harmony and should prove to be remarkably long-lived. Brilliant. Drink through 2041+.

Deeper-pitched and more carnal than the Chambertin, Rousseau's 2019 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru mingles aromas of cherries, cassis and raspberries with hints of Asian spices, incense, smoked tea, rich soil tones and grilled duck. Full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, it's bright and lively, with a fleshy core of concentrated fruit, succulent acids and powdery structuring tannins. Long and perfumed, this is a sensual Clos de Bèze in the making.

Rousseau Clos de Bèze is a blend of three plots that total 1.42ha. Cyrielle believes the wine shows better in its youth than Chambertin. Both wines, however, are vinified in the same way: destemmed, long maceration, gentle extraction and ageing in new François Frères barrels. The result is sublime: charming in its youth, with accessible, ripe notes of red and black fruits, spice, mineral and game, plus a velvety, dense texture that is firm but not forbidding. This has the substance to last fifty years if cellared well. Drink 2029-2069.

Equally subtle wood frames the even spicier if slightly riper nose that reflects a layered blend of red currant, violet, rose petal, earth and a whisper of exotic tea. The full-bodied if slightly less concentrated flavors also reflect an abundance of minerality on the firm, serious and equally well-balanced, youthfully austere and hugely long finale. I usually prefer one or the other [Chambertin] at this stage each year but in 2019, while the two wines are noticeably different, it's not clear which will ultimately be the more interesting. In sum, this is a choice but one where there is no wrong answer as this too is brilliant! Drink through 2041+.

The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru opens in the glass with rich aromas of berry fruit, loamy soil, peonies, dark chocolate and cedar. Produced from three parcels: two in the original Clos de la Roche vineyard and almost 1ha in Les Fremières. Aged in used casks like the producer's Charmes, this has a very different character, with dark, plummy fruit alongside an earthy note on the nose, and a texture that is less firm perhaps, but broader and more full-bodied. Very solid. Drink 2024-2059.

Here too there is just enough wood to remark upon surrounding the well-layered blend of red and blue pinot fruit, earth and a plenitude of spice and floral elements. The wonderfully energetic, sleek and equally muscular larger-scaled flavors also brim with minerality on the refined, focused, balanced and even more persistent finish. This is terrific and a wine that should easily repay two decades of cellaring if you have the patience. Drink through 2036+.

Aromas of sweet berry fruit, wild plums, baking chocolate, spices and candied citrus rind introduce Rousseau's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, a medium-bodied, lively wine with a generous core of fruit, bright acids and powdery structuring tannins. Combining a certain sunny generosity with real vibrancy and precision, this appears to have the makings of Rousseau's finest communal bottling since 2012 or 2010, so I'm looking forward to revisiting it in bottle in a few years. As I've written before, the communal Gevrey includes fruit from premiers crus Perrières and Etournelles Saint-Jacques.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

This regular Gevrey village was produced in 2019 from a total of seven parcels, most of them to the north, according to Cyrielle Rousseau, as well as a bit of the Premier Cru Clos Prieur, producing what is among my favourite village-level Gevreys. It shows remarkable purity of red fruit and an expressive floral note on the nose, yet despite the tension and tannin on the palate, it is indeed a generous wine. Drink 2024-2059.

A slightly more deeply pitched nose presents aromas of wild red and dark berries, underbrush, warm earth and a whiff of the sauvage. The delicious and attractively vibrant medium-bodied flavors possess a beguiling texture thanks to the relatively sophisticated tannins shaping the more complex and slightly longer finish. This forward effort should also also drink well after only a few years of cellaring. Drink through 2025+.

The 2016 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru, which Cyrille described as her “heart wine,” has a superb bouquet with ebullient dark cherries, bergamot, blackberry and briary, wonderful delineation and demonstrating more exuberance than Mugneret-Gibourg (which as affected by frost, whereas Rousseau was not). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, shimmering red fruit, outstanding mineralité and a subtle crescendo toward the pixilated finish. Is this the finest Ruchottes-Chambertin in 2016? Without a shadow of a doubt.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate #234 (Dec 2017)

Good medium red. Pure, restrained aromas and flavors of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Silky and fine-grained on entry, then juicy and tighter in the middle, showing strong calcaire energy as the mother rock here isn't much more than a foot below the surface. This rich, firmly tannic wine boasts a long, rising finish featuring black fruits and violet. Impeccably balanced from the start, but this youthfully austere wine will need time in the cellar. The estate is slowly replanting this vineyard, so this 2016 is a mix of old and young vines.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (Jan 2018)

A highly appealing freshness to the elegant aromas of red and dark berries that are at once intensely earthy and spicy. In the same fashion, there is a lovely sense of verve and freshness to the markedly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate delineation on the sleek, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is really quite classy and has already developed impressive depth. While this clearly has the intrinsic stuffing to reward extended cellaring, 5-ish years or so should be sufficient in order to enjoy this beauty if youthful fruit is your preference.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru was showing some reduction on the nose that was difficult to shake off, though there appears to be sufficient fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a more conservative Clos de Bèze in some ways, but it demonstrates impressive precision as it fans out with gusto towards the finish. Give this 5-6 years in bottle to address the reduction issue and then I believe this will turn into an exemplary Grand Cru. Tasted September 2016.

Good dark red. More closed today than the Clos Saint-Jacques, showing a stronger oak presence to its reticent aromas of dark raspberry, strawberry and blood orange. Then hugely rich, opulent and pliant on the palate if still youthfully reserved. Completely different in shape from the Clos Saint-Jacques, conveying a strong impression of solidity and saline minerality. Finishes with big but ripe, thoroughly integrated tannins. This may not have quite the fruit intensity or verve of the 2014 but it still leaves the salivary glands humming.

Subtle if not invisible wood serves as a backdrop for the mildly reduced nose so again do yourself a favor and decant this if you're going to crack one before 2020 or so. There is knock-out intensity to the gorgeously textured and mineral-inflected flavors that are imposingly scaled yet there is not even a hint of heaviness on the restrained, delineated and explosively long and mouth coating finale. This is a breathtakingly robust and powerful Bèze that is going to require all of 20 years to reach it zenith.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Grand Cru from Armand Rousseau had a slight reduction on the nose but underneath lies some gorgeous and ripe redcurrant, strawberry and bay leaf aromas. Very complex, but you need to wait for the aromas to fully get into their stride. The palate is extremely well balanced with fine tannins. It is blessed with wonderful focus and precision, armed with outstanding tension and intensity on the sophisticated finish. This is what we call in the trade: "proper Chambertin." Very good deep red. Closer to the CSJ than to the CDB on the nose, offering terrific pungent lift to the aromas of black raspberry, rose petal and blood orange. Wonderfully sappy and pure, without any impression of weightiness to its saline flavors of raspberry, spices and white pepper. Utterly fine-grained, silky wine with great finesse. One of the longest, most palate-saturating wines of this vintage, finishing with noble tannins and taste bud-titilllating perfume. Perfectly balanced also but built for a glorious evolution in bottle. It would be a shame to open this bottle too soon.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (March 2016)

Once again subtle reduction pushes the underlying fruit to the background so I recommended decanting it for those of you who can't wait at least 5 years to try a bottle. There is even more size, weight and intensity to the velvety, powerful and opulent big-bodied flavors that possess an abundance of palate soaking dry extract that pushes the otherwise tightly coiled tannins to the background on the massively long coffee-inflected finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. This is very firmly structured but actually a bit less austere than it usually is and thanks to the abundant dry extract might be approachable a bit sooner than usual too. In short, this brilliant effort is one of the greatest wines of the 2013 vintage.

A more expressive and admirably pure nose freely offers up its array of red pinot fruit, spice and subtle floral nuances. The 2022 Maranges Rouge La Fussières 1er Cru is a blend of several cuvées with different proportions of whole bunches, averaging around 30%. It has more nuance on the nose than the Vieilles Vignes; the stems are neatly incorporated. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry that gets the saliva flowing. With chalky tannins, quite firm structure and a hint of licorice on the finish, this Maranges deserves 3 or 4 years in bottle. Drink 2026-2036.

There is enough fruit to make several tanks of La Fussière with different levels of whole bunch vinification which are then blended. A glowing mid to deep purple. The bouquet has a depth of dark raspberry fruit, with a little strawberry as well. Quite an interesting wave of fruit through the palate, a fresher style of red berry, but nuanced and with good length. Some pepper to conclude. Drink from 2026-2030.

The 2021 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge was very complex to pick, the 5.5-hectares with ten different types of ripening depending on vine age and terroirs. It has a very mineral-driven bouquet, beautifully defined with more black fruit than the Clos de la Boutière. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp red fruit, a little leafy in style and sapid with a slightly peppery finish that might fool you into thinking there were stems in the blend (when in fact, they were too green to include this year). One third whole bunch, ie one of three tanks was 100%. The Bachelet boys have an additional hectare in Fussière from 2020, exceptionally well placed. Almost black in the centre. Black cherry, very powerful indeed with some firm tannins and still very good acidity. Sterner and weightier, not for the ethereal minded. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and precise, with lively acids, fine tannins and a perfumed, mouthwateringly saline finish, it's a real success. The 2019 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge, which contains around 30% whole bunches, has a well-defined nose with autumn leaves and tea leaf infusing the vibrant red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a structured opening, very fresh and brimming with tension, harmonious from start to finish with a liberal sprinkling of cracked black pepper on the very sustained aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2023 - 2038.

If you don’t know or don’t rate Maranges, this wine is the wake-up call. The Bachelet-Monnot 2019 1er Cru La Fussière is really concentrated, with masterful intensity in all senses, but still with elegance. Perfectly ripe deep cherry-raspberry fruit with a long finish, fuller-bodied than ever in the past and without the trenchant acidity that used to be a feature sometimes.

An intensely earthy nose reveals notes of both red and dark berries along with a hint of forest floor. The lilting, delicious and nicely energetic flavors possess reasonably good richness along with acceptable persistence on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish where a hint of rusticity slowly emerges. Firm reduction currently dominates the nose though there is both good freshness and punch to the firm and rather rustic middle weight flavors that conclude in a somewhat awkward finish. Benoit is the 4th generation of Chevallier vignerons in Vosne-Romanée, and from 2018 has taken over production of the domaine. One of the rare and exciting new names in Burgundy that are working their estate owned vines, Benoit has hit the ground running in very short time. His wines are bright, energetic, and concentrated and show wonderful structure.

Organic viticulture is practiced in each of the plots, and from there the grapes are treated with utmost care. After sorting in the vineyard, all bunches are destemmed gently to preserve full berries, and vinification takes place in cement and wooden vats, with macerations lasting two to three weeks with gentle pump-overs and occasional punch-downs. The village wines are aged 12-14 months and the rest for about 18 months in new to three–year-old oak, depending on the cuvee and vintage.

Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, yet despite their renown, it seems the market has not yet fully appreciated just how good the wines currently being produced are. They are the largest owner of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, this includes prized plots such as Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Chambertin, Bonnes Mares, and Meursault Perrieres.
Founded in 1731, the subsequent nine generations of the Bouchard family has amassed an impressive 130ha of vineyards, including nearly 100 separate climats. It's perhaps this large size, contrasting the current trend for tiny producers with a cult following that has meant Bouchard are not front and centre in the minds of many Burgundy drinkers. A true shame as Bouchard are making some of the best wines in their history.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" has a rather conservative bouquet, earthy and missing some fruit intensity. This wine is among the most successful Beaune premier crus in 2021. The aromas begin with mulberry and cassis fruit with notes of earth, menthol, and smoke. Rich and substantial on the palate, it features surprisingly full body, firm tannins and rewarding length. The grapes are from the Bouchard monopole of nearly four hectares within Beaune Grèves. In 2021, 30% were fermented as whole clusters to ensure complexity and freshness. This should open well with a few years in bottle and age over the next two decades. Drink 2027-2045.

This one of the more floral-suffused wines in the range with its hints of violet, rose petal and lavender that add touch of elegance to the very ripe poached plum scents that presently lack a bit of freshness. There is verve and freshness on the palate of the dense, voluminous and punchy flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm tannins shaping the powerful, serious and mildly warm finale. Still pretty closed, this is a concentrated and seriously structured wine for a Beaune 1er Cru, which has clearly been built for the long-term. However, its the pronounced, stony minerality that makes this exciting. Bold and still quite tight finish. From a 3.92-hectare plot in one of Beaune's top sites. From organically grown grapes. This is a free draining soil, but deep enough that it did not dry out during the parched summer. Dark purple black, one of the more sunshine laden bouquets but with a joyous plump fruit on the palate refreshed at the back by a little useful acidity. Good length, no undue heat.

Bouchard has nearly four hectares of this, perhaps the greatest site in the Beaune appellation. On a modest slope with east-southeast exposure in the heart of the terroir, this has produced a sophisticated, elegant wine in 2020, fermenting out to barely 13.5% alcohol with a pH between 3.5–3.6. The fruit is supremely luxurious and lush, yet underscored with plenty of nuance of spice, smoke, earth, and leather. The texture is dense and powerful yet superbly elegant — a triumph. The 2020 Le Corton Grand Cru is a worthy successor to the striking 2019 (which I probably underrated last year). Soaring from the glass with aromas of rose petals, orange rind, raspberries, rich soil tones and cinnamon, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with a deep and layered core of fruit, vibrant acids and fine, melting tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. This emblematic cuvée has always been a solid bottling chez Bouchard, but in the last few years it seems to have attained a whole new level of quality. When I asked Frédéric Weber what might account for this shift, he explained that he picks later and includes more whole bunches in the vinification. Whatever the reason, readers are advised to take note, as I don't think the market has yet factored in quite how good this wine is.

The Bouchard 2020 Corton has coped well with the drought. Vinification included 40% whole bunches, slightly higher than the other Côte de Beaune vineyards. Deepish colour with a more crimson edge. The stems show with a slightly smoky nose. This magnificent parcel is 3.55ha in a long strip below the wood of Corton and above Clos du Roi and Renards, right on the limestone. The medium-bodied palate offers lithe tannins, a cashmere texture and lovely weight and harmony. Impressive structure combined with finesse on the persistent finish. Superb. Drink 2023 - 2055.

Not so dark in colour as the Bèze, but then these are their own grapes. Near the forest and Latricières so this spot doesn’t get overheated. Sweetly oaked, massive at first sight, yet with a welcome strictness alongside, waves of fruit, not delicate, but with delicacy nonetheless. Amazing persistence really shows the quality of the terroir.

An overtly floral nose reflects notes of rose petal, lavender, acacia and violet along with nuances of red and black fruit, earth and a whiff of forest floor. There is excellent intensity, size, weight and power to the attractively textured big-bodied flavors that brim with minerality on the caressing but punchy finale. This beautifully balanced effort is in the classic mold of this wine as it's very clearly built for the long haul and again, I would suggest not touching this wine for at least a decade and two decades would not be much of a surprise. The 2019 Le Corton Grand Cru confirms its superb showing from barrel, blossoming in the glass with scents of wild berries, peonies, violets, blood orange and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, with melting tannins, beautiful purity of fruit and lively balancing acids, it's long and perfumed, concluding with a saline, rose-inflected finish. I have never tasted a Corton from Bouchard that was so good, so young. Drink 2022 - 2060.

The 2019 Le Corton Grand Cru includes 30% whole cluster, which is quite evident – maybe too evident – on the nose at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, and quite pure and focused, offering dark berry fruit laced with cedar toward the structured and rather saturnine finish. Broody – it will require patience. Drink 2025 - 2040.

Powerful yet sleek with effusive, ripe black-cherry character. Silky front palate, then the serious tannins come through. No hint of the rusticity and edginess that you sometimes get from this appellation. More than enough fruit to make a completely convincing package. Bold finish. Drink or hold.

Brilliant purple, not too deep. Sweetly perfumed, red fruit style, with a burst of concentration shortly after the wine hits the mouth. Picked early, raspberry and strawberry fruit, Frédéric Weber played with more whole bunch and that has worked. “Le Corton is usually Cistercian, but we had to save it from over ripeness”, he explained.

This is an interesting wine as the nose is extremely ripe yet it's also extremely fresh with a mélange of liqueur-like red and dark berries, earth and a plenitude of spice elements. There is almost painful intensity to the larger-scaled flavors that are at once muscular yet refined while flashing good minerality on the youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. This too is also quite tightly wound, and I would leave it alone for at least a decade. Drink 2034+.

Notes of wild berries, dark chocolate, spices and grilled meats preface Bouchard's 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens, a medium to full-bodied, racy and precise wine, with a concentrated, tightly wound core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, lively finish. More suave and elegant than the 2018 rendition, this is a refined Rugiens in the making.

The 2019 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru is much more intense on the nose than the Pommard 1er Cru, offering layers of red berry fruit, wild hedgerow, fern and tea leaf scents. The medium-bodied palate is harmonious with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, and gentle grip on the saline finish. A tang of Japanese nori lingers on the aftertaste. Impressive. Rich full purple. The bouquet has a freshness to it, which aids precision. Seamless gorgeous ripe fruit right across the palate, and with excellent length. Shows where it comes from (upper part), but a brilliant expression of the terroir. More in aromatic elegance than the grand cru density of the lower part.

The 2019 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru has by far the best aromatics of Bouchard’s somewhat awkward Beaune Premier Crus, delivering bright red berry fruit, crushed stone and final delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, and quite peppery on the entry, but shows more freshness and terroir expression compared to Les Tuerons or the Clos de la Mousse. Excellent. Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils, is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy. In 1775, Joseph Bouchard acquired his first vineyards in Volnay in the famous “Les Caillerets” climat and started to develop the family’s vineyard holdings. During the French Revolution, property belonging to the clergy and nobility was confiscated and put up for sale. Joseph’s son, Antoine Philibert Joseph Bouchard, seized the opportunity to extend the family’s vineyard holdings in Beaune including the famous “Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jesus.” Over time, by acquiring various terroirs with great care and patience, Bouchard Père & Fils has built up a vast domaine in Côte-d’Or. Today the estate boasts 130 hectares of vines, of which 12 are classed Grand Cru and 74 classed as Premier Cru.

Included in the almost one hundred ‘climats’ or uniquely diverse vineyards represented by Bouchard is the Vosne Romanee premier cru vineyard Les Beaux Monts. Les Beaux Monts lies upslope and adjacent to Echezeaux and is separated from Richebourg only by the smaller Les Brulees. Its distinct personality comes from its more southerly exposure and its marl and clay soils.

The slope in this part of Beaune is considered the best terroir in the commune, despite the lack of Grand Cru status. In Les Greves, a gentle, southeasterly exposure gives the vines plentiful sunshine during the day, which helps with the development of sugar and phenols in the grapes. This is tempered by cooler evenings, which slow this ripening process and leads to a retention of acidity, making for balanced wines. These wines are among the most respected made in Beaune, rivaled only by the wines made in the tiny neighboring Premier Cru vineyard, Sur les Greves.

Revisited from bottle, the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with a brooding bouquet of dark berry fruit, ripe cherries, warm spices, baking chocolate and subtle soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, it's rich and powerful, with ripe tannins and a voluminous core of fruit, concluding with a long, heady finish. When I tasted this wine from barrel, Bouchard's Frédéric Weber observed that analytically this 2018 is very similar indeed to the 1947 vintage of l'Enfant Jesus, and in its controlled but overt ripeness the analogy seems even more obvious from bottle.

The 2018 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru, from the 3.9-hectare monopole in Grèves, has a lovely, floral, very pure bouquet that frankly puts Bouchard’s other Beaune Premier Crus in their place. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannin, fine acidity and pure black cherry and blueberry fruit with wonderful details on the finish. This is very classy and punches with many more expensive Premier Crus in the Côte de Nuits.

Mentholated, ripe and toasty aromas speak of poached plum, spice and plenty of freshly turned earth scents. The medium-bodied flavors possess a beguiling mouthfeel that is enhanced by the abundant amounts of sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the even firmer tannic spine shaping the robust though not really rustic finale. Worth checking out.

Very generous wood and menthol elements aren't fully integrated with the very ripe black cherry and raspberry liqueur-like aromas that flash soft spice and floral nuances. There is a strikingly lovely mouth feel to the intense mineral-driven and despite the excellent richness, first-rate delineation to the more powerful if perhaps slightly less refined finish this is linear, serious and gorgeously long. The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus offers up pretty aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet loamy soil, truffles and grilled game bird. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and supple, with a succulent core of fleshy fruit and a rich and textural profile. It's a giving, generous wine that should offer a broad drinking window, but don't let its early approachability deceive, as it should be long-lived too.

Dark fruits in 2016. The DNA of long, silky tannins is alive and well here. A suave and polished style with an attractive core of flavorsome, elegant mid-palate fruits. Really impressive. Try from 2022.

Here too the wood treatment is anything but subtle though it stops just short of completely overshadowing the exuberantly spicy plum liqueur and earth-scented nose. There is good drive and even better detail if not the impressive concentration to the medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the ever-so-slightly warm and very firm finish. Again, my predicted range assumes that the wood treatment will be successfully absorbed over time and note as well that plenty of patience will be necessary.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is lovely, wafting from the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of wild berries, forest floor, potpourri and a subtle framing of cedar new wood. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and satiny, with beautifully powdery tannins cloaked in cool, succulent fruit, concluding with a long finish. Right now, this Caillerets is quite reserved, but its structural finesse and harmony are already impressive.

More discreet wood more easily allows the overtly spicy aromas of poached plum, lavender and tea, The round yet reasonably well-detailed flavors possess a sophisticated mouth feel as well as fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, mineral-driven and very firm finish. Here the wood treatment is a bit more discreet though it's still not subtle on the exceptionally cool and fresh but ripe nose that offers up plenty of sauvage and earth hints that suffuse the black cherry and lilac scents. The dense, bold and overtly muscular and powerful big-bodied flavors possess an abundance of sappy extract that coats the palate and buffers the extremely firm tannic spine on the immensely persistent finish that is less austere than it usually is. This is breathtakingly good and despite my extended drinking window, it should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years.

The 2015 Corton Grand Cru comes from vines with eastern orientation and is usually the last to be picked. It has a slightly irony, redcurrant and crushed strawberry-scented bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, candied orange peel opening. There is something here that is a bit too exotic for my liking, and I wonder if it would have been better harvested even just a day earlier? Not bad, though I would prefer to see more breeding and sophistication.

Bright red-ruby. Medicinal scents of kirsch and licorice show a positive burnt note. Distinctly tighter and more clenched than the Pommard Rugiens, without the early pliancy of that wine but with terrific energy and clarity to its black fruit and licorice flavors. This very young, juicy, firmly tannic wine needs time to harmonize but has all the elements to make a superb bottle.

The 2016 Corton Grand Cru comes from red clay soils that are just 80 centimeters deep before you hit the limestone bedrock. It has a finely tuned bouquet with cranberry, raspberry preserve and crushed strawberry scents, crushed roses developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, brisk and tensile from start to finish and then pulling back so as not to overdo the finish. This is a case of less is more in a wine and it is likely to surpass the 2015 Corton.

(these high-altitude vines produced a normal crop in 2016): Moderately saturated dark red. Sexy if slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, tarte au prune and game, with some new oak showing. Very rich, dense and pliant, conveying a distinctly relaxed quality for the vintage. This plump, large-scaled grand cru finishes with superb restrained sweetness, noteworthy finesse of tannins, and serious building length, with its lightly saline black raspberry fruit complemented by an almost chocolatey ripeness. Very, very generous wood treatment is sufficiently toasty to presently dominate the otherwise layered nose of dark cherry, raspberry, earth and sauvage-inflected aromas. There is superb concentration, power and richness to the big-bodied flavors that possess excellent reserves of dry extract that helps to buffer the exceptionally firm tannic spine shaping the superbly long mineral-driven finish. This is at once impressive as hell but it's also very woody and while the underlying material appears to be more than sufficient to eventually integrate the oak, it will require time for this to happen.

Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

This is a serious village Gevrey-Chambertin, expressing aromas of red and black currants, with black tea, balsamic and bitter chocolate. Dark-fruited, deep and savory, with a medium body and a firm tannin frame. Tight and long. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2024.

Situated in the southern part of Marsannay, Au Champ Salomon is one of the premier vineyards in this Couchey sector. The vineyard is well placed on the mid-slope, and produces wines that combine power and elegance, and a propensity to age extremely well.

Cherry stones, dark raspberries, chalk, black tea and cocoa on the nose, with some orange peel and incense. Dark and brooding in fruit profile, with so much muscle without being heavy in any way. Firm tannins. Incredible power. Where are we here? From organically grown grapes. Try this from 2025.

Les Favieres is situated on the border of the Marsannay and Couchey sectors, and the vineyard has a very shallow top soil above the bedrock. It tends to produce wines that are very precise, structured, and built to age.

Beautifully peppery and perfumed nose of violets, peppercorns, cardamom, wild cherries, mulberries and cloves. Tea leaves and paprika. Fantastic flavors packed tightly into a medium body. Chalky, mineral tannins. Long and linear. Then comes to a tight and firm finish. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2025.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
