Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

A more elegant nose offers up notes of fresh red currant along with more obvious floral nuances if less earth and pepper hints. As one would expect there is more refinement present on the lightly mineral-inflected and sleek medium weight flavors where the finish really fans out on. Lovely juice that should also repay mid-term cellaring yet be reasonably approachable young.

Once again prominent wood stops just short of dominating the overtly spicy nose of cassis, black cherry, lavender and warm earth scents. There is excellent power and volume to the concentrated, intense and mouth coating mineral-driven flavors that culminate in an impressively long and balanced finish. This is a bigger wine than the Grèves and should amply reward mid-term cellaring. Drink from 2024+.

Here’s a deep and complex 2021 Beaune 1er Cru with stacks of dark earthy complexity as well as abundant red fruit character and a touch of smoky oak. Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThis wine is among the most successful Beaune premier crus in 2021. The aromas begin with mulberry and cassis fruit with notes of earth, menthol, and smoke. Rich and substantial on the palate, it features surprisingly full body, firm tannins and rewarding length. The grapes are from the Bouchard monopole of nearly four hectares within Beaune Grèves. In 2021, 30% were fermented as whole clusters to ensure complexity and freshness. This should open well with a few years in bottle and age over the next two decades. Drink 2027-2045.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2021 Beaune Les Teurons 1er Cru was badly affected by the frost, cropped at 6-7hL/ha, due to it being located on a steep slope. This one of the more floral-suffused wines in the range with its hints of violet, rose petal and lavender that add touch of elegance to the very ripe poached plum scents that presently lack a bit of freshness. There is verve and freshness on the palate of the dense, voluminous and punchy flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm tannins shaping the powerful, serious and mildly warm finale. Note that my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt that the nose will recover better freshness. Drink from 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Le Corton Grand Cru is a worthy successor to the striking 2019 (which I probably underrated last year). Soaring from the glass with aromas of rose petals, orange rind, raspberries, rich soil tones and cinnamon, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with a deep and layered core of fruit, vibrant acids and fine, melting tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. This emblematic cuvée has always been a solid bottling chez Bouchard, but in the last few years it seems to have attained a whole new level of quality. When I asked Frédéric Weber what might account for this shift, he explained that he picks later and includes more whole bunches in the vinification. Whatever the reason, readers are advised to take note, as I don't think the market has yet factored in quite how good this wine is.

Shows where it comes from (upper part), but a brilliant expression of the terroir. More in aromatic elegance than the grand cru density of the lower part.

I can't remember an Enfant Jesus that tasted so good, so young. Drink 2022 - 2050.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 2021)The 2019 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru has by far the best aromatics of Bouchard’s somewhat awkward Beaune Premier Crus, delivering bright red berry fruit, crushed stone and final delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, and quite peppery on the entry, but shows more freshness and terroir expression compared to Les Tuerons or the Clos de la Mousse. Excellent. Drink 2023 - 2043.

Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils, is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy. In 1775, Joseph Bouchard acquired his first vineyards in Volnay in the famous “Les Caillerets” climat and started to develop the family’s vineyard holdings. During the French Revolution, property belonging to the clergy and nobility was confiscated and put up for sale. Joseph’s son, Antoine Philibert Joseph Bouchard, seized the opportunity to extend the family’s vineyard holdings in Beaune including the famous “Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jesus.” Over time, by acquiring various terroirs with great care and patience, Bouchard Père & Fils has built up a vast domaine in Côte-d’Or. Today the estate boasts 130 hectares of vines, of which 12 are classed Grand Cru and 74 classed as Premier Cru.
Included in the almost one hundred ‘climats’ or uniquely diverse vineyards represented by Bouchard is the Vosne Romanee premier cru vineyard Les Beaux Monts. Les Beaux Monts lies upslope and adjacent to Echezeaux and is separated from Richebourg only by the smaller Les Brulees. Its distinct personality comes from its more southerly exposure and its marl and clay soils.

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is showing beautifully from bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, black plums, sweet soil tones and subtle spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's one of the more tightly wound wines in the range, with powdery structuring tannins, lively acids and a long, penetrating finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru comes from Bouchard’s 3.7-hectare monopole. It expresses more delineation and detail than the Taillepieds, presenting a rather intoxicating mélange of red and black fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, good body and density and a firm backbone. It clams up a little toward the finish, and it will demand three or four years in bottle before it becomes approachable.

In Les Greves, a gentle, southeasterly exposure gives the vines plentiful sunshine during the day, which helps with the development of sugar and phenols in the grapes. This is tempered by cooler evenings, which slow this ripening process and leads to a retention of acidity, making for balanced wines. These wines are among the most respected made in Beaune, rivaled only by the wines made in the tiny neighboring Premier Cru vineyard, Sur les Greves.

Revisited from bottle, the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with a brooding bouquet of dark berry fruit, ripe cherries, warm spices, baking chocolate and subtle soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, it's rich and powerful, with ripe tannins and a voluminous core of fruit, concluding with a long, heady finish. When I tasted this wine from barrel, Bouchard's Frédéric Weber observed that analytically this 2018 is very similar indeed to the 1947 vintage of l'Enfant Jesus, and in its controlled but overt ripeness the analogy seems even more obvious from bottle.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)The 2018 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru, from the 3.9-hectare monopole in Grèves, has a lovely, floral, very pure bouquet that frankly puts Bouchard’s other Beaune Premier Crus in their place. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannin, fine acidity and pure black cherry and blueberry fruit with wonderful details on the finish. This is very classy and punches with many more expensive Premier Crus in the Côte de Nuits.

jamessuckling.comMentholated, ripe and toasty aromas speak of poached plum, spice and plenty of freshly turned earth scents. The medium-bodied flavors possess a beguiling mouthfeel that is enhanced by the abundant amounts of sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the even firmer tannic spine shaping the robust though not really rustic finale. Very generous wood and menthol elements aren't fully integrated with the very ripe black cherry and raspberry liqueur-like aromas that flash soft spice and floral nuances. The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus offers up pretty aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet loamy soil, truffles and grilled game bird. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and supple, with a succulent core of fleshy fruit and a rich and textural profile. It's a giving, generous wine that should offer a broad drinking window, but don't let its early approachability deceive, as it should be long-lived too.

jamessuckling.comHere too the wood treatment is anything but subtle though it stops just short of completely overshadowing the exuberantly spicy plum liqueur and earth-scented nose. There is good drive and even better detail if not the impressive concentration to the medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the ever-so-slightly warm and very firm finish. The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is lovely, wafting from the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of wild berries, forest floor, potpourri and a subtle framing of cedar new wood. Here the wood treatment is a bit more discreet though it's still not subtle on the exceptionally cool and fresh but ripe nose that offers up plenty of sauvage and earth hints that suffuse the black cherry and lilac scents. The dense, bold and overtly muscular and powerful big-bodied flavors possess an abundance of sappy extract that coats the palate and buffers the extremely firm tannic spine on the immensely persistent finish that is less austere than it usually is. This is breathtakingly good and despite my extended drinking window, it should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2015 Corton Grand Cru comes from vines with eastern orientation and is usually the last to be picked. It has a slightly irony, redcurrant and crushed strawberry-scented bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, candied orange peel opening. There is something here that is a bit too exotic for my liking, and I wonder if it would have been better harvested even just a day earlier? Not bad, though I would prefer to see more breeding and sophistication.

Neal Martin - The Wine Advocate #228 (Dec 2016)Bright red-ruby. Medicinal scents of kirsch and licorice show a positive burnt note. Distinctly tighter and more clenched than the Pommard Rugiens, without the early pliancy of that wine but with terrific energy and clarity to its black fruit and licorice flavors. The 2016 Corton Grand Cru comes from red clay soils that are just 80 centimeters deep before you hit the limestone bedrock. It has a finely tuned bouquet with cranberry, raspberry preserve and crushed strawberry scents, crushed roses developing with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, brisk and tensile from start to finish and then pulling back so as not to overdo the finish. This is a case of less is more in a wine and it is likely to surpass the 2015 Corton.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate #234 (Dec 2017)(these high-altitude vines produced a normal crop in 2016): Moderately saturated dark red. Sexy if slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, tarte au prune and game, with some new oak showing. Very rich, dense and pliant, conveying a distinctly relaxed quality for the vintage. This plump, large-scaled grand cru finishes with superb restrained sweetness, noteworthy finesse of tannins, and serious building length, with its lightly saline black raspberry fruit complemented by an almost chocolatey ripeness. An extremely promising vintage for this wine.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousThe chalky and stony notes are intermingled with pastry and red to dark cherries, all leading to a palate that shows good acidity, impressive depth and weight of tannins. A cool vintage expression with more intensity at the finish. This will age very well. Try from 2024.

jamessuckling.comVery, very generous wood treatment is sufficiently toasty to presently dominate the otherwise layered nose of dark cherry, raspberry, earth and sauvage-inflected aromas. There is superb concentration, power and richness to the big-bodied flavors that possess excellent reserves of dry extract that helps to buffer the exceptionally firm tannic spine shaping the superbly long mineral-driven finish. This is at once impressive as hell but it's also very woody and while the underlying material appears to be more than sufficient to eventually integrate the oak, it will require time for this to happen.

Now managing approximately 95 hectares, the domaine is among the most significant landowners in the Cote de Beaune. Under the direction of Vincent Avenel, with head viticulturalist Justine Savoye and cellarmaster Lucy Auger, there is a meticulous emphasis on vineyard health; the estate's core Cote de Beaune holdings achieved full organic certification in 2024. In the cellar, a technical, "infusion-led" philosophy utilises a state-of-the-art chilling tunnel to preserve varietal purity and acidity. Winemaking is precise and site-specific, typically employing roughly 50% whole-cluster fermentation for reds and conservative new oak (20% for whites, 25-30% for reds).

If you’ve ever wondered what minerality in red Burgundy tastes like, here is a daringly mineral wine that’s like stepping to the edge of a precipice, then looking over the edge. Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Very expressive nose with aromas of dark to black cherries, violets, dried clove and hints of anise blooming out of the glass. Some forest floor and spicy cedar notes also chime in. Rich dark to black cherry and wild strawberry fruits power across the palate with some anise, clove, forest floor and spicy cedar elements lying underneath. Slightly grainy in its feel with relatively polished tannins for Pommard. Concludes long, deeply fruited and expansive.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Plenty of fresh plum, black cherry and a touch of blood orange on the nose of this very satisfying Pommard. Stacks of healthy tannins are already beautifully integrated in the fullish body. In spite of the considerable power, this has a remarkably elegant finish for this appellation. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comOnce again there is a coolness to the markedly restrained aromas of airy red and dark pinot fruit, pungent earth and smoke. The middle weight flavors are not as dense or voluminous, but they are definitely stonier and particularly so on the linear and borderline strict finish. Clos du Roy is the northern most lieu-dit of Marsannay, and the relatively steep south-east facing vineyard sits above the town of Chenove. Quite closed, with a cool nose of raspberry, redcurrant and lemon zest, this has an imposing tannin structure and excellent concentration. An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
