Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Clos du Roy is the northern most lieu-dit of Marsannay, and the relatively steep south-east facing vineyard sits above the town of Chenove. Soils here are light red with an element of sand, sitting atop a bedrock of hard limestone. Wines from Clos du Roy can be more elegant, aromatic, and approachable.

Other Reviews....
What an enticing nose of red fruits with only a whiff of toasty oak. Charming and filigree with super-silky tannins and an underlying firmness supporting the medium- to full-bodied palate. You could easily mistake this for a Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru from a leading producer, particularly in the very long and precise, minerally finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Offering up aromas of cherries, raspberries, rose petals and dark chocolate, Audoin's 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with bright acids and a succulent, charming profile.

Here a discreet application of wood surrounds the fresh, cool and restrained red and dark pinot fruit where a floral top note adds a touch of elegance. The more concentrated medium weight flavors possess excellent intensity while the moderately firm and youthfully austere finish flashes more evident minerality on the balanced and sneaky long finish. This is built to repay up to a decade of keeping but could reasonably be approached after 5 years. Drink through 2030+.
