Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. Sold out on the DMLVin website, though I’m sure there may be some floating around at retail. Red cherry, almond paste, mint and floral perfume, subtle sweet spiced oak. There’s a come-hither juiciness to the raspberry and cherry flavour, fine powdery tannin, a certain sappy energy, and a pretty red fruited finish of fine length and gentle grip. All the charm. Single-vineyard pinot noir from Dalrymple's home turf in Pipers River. The most lifted and red-fruited of the single-site releases. Bright red cherry, red plum and blood orange fruit tones with underlying hints of Chinese five-spice, dried cranberries, rose petals, biltong, cinnamon and earth. Calm and savoury with some sea spray nuance to the minerally acid pulse, lovely airy red fruits, chalky tannins and a fine, elegant presence. Drink by 2035.

Boasting superb richness, power and a supple feel, this is superb expression of Tassie Pinot that draws comparisons with top end Burgundy.

The crown jewel in the Dalrymple collection, the Mt. Lord Vineyard is located on a small, angular and varied landscape that lays on the protected easterly slope of the Pontos Hills. The vineyard rows run up the hillside from 134m to 156m above sea level, precariously positioned between a rock ledge below and steep barren hillside above.
The fruit was handpicked with a small amount of the bunches placed directly into the ferment. Maturation took place in French oak barriques (30% new) for a period of 10 months.

Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Intense spicy dark cherry, rhubarb, dried herb and bramble scents sail through the nostrils with some forest floor, subtle strawberry and cedar notes also making an appearance. Rich, concentrated and supple in its flow across the palate, it shows fabulous power and expansive volume. Dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb flavours infused with dried herbs are further complexed by notions of brambly cedar, forest floor and spice. Velvety tannins seamlessly integrate into the very long, complex and highly savoury conclusion.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

A new offering from Dalrymple from the Mt Lord vineyard, purchased by Hill-Smith Family Vineyards in 2012. Bright ruby with lifted aromas of red cherry, red plum and raspberry pip. Notes of fine spice suffuse through the wine with hints of struck flint, raspberry coulis, powdered stone, wildflowers, gentle game tones and a distant whiff of leaf litter. Fine, lacy acidity provides energy and drive. Fruit ripe and pure, stretched in a canvas of fine, kinetic tannin, supple and finely detailed as it retreats. Drink by 2036.

I was fortunate to taste the only sample of this wine in the UK, and it is one of the most remarkable Tassie wines of my life.  Take all of the purity and expression we know and love from Tasmanian elite Pinot Noir, then concentrate it just a touch.  Darken the fruit, add a hint more muscle, spice and shantung silk textural mystery, along with a whisper of magical whole bunches and some rhapsodic French oak and the picture is complete.  Pete Caldwell captured the essence of this site in Polaroid perfection. Then, he made the near-impossible happen by transferring all of the energy and greatness of this fruit without squandering a drop of potential into the bottle.  I implore the lever-pullers at Hill-Smith Family Estate’s HQ to heave a few cases of this wine onto the next Dalrymple boat to the UK.  If this wine appeared next to various Clos de Vougeots, Bonnes-Mares and Chambertins this week, it would bring the house down!  Drink 2026 – 2035

Fruit was sourced from Dalrymple’s own vineyards at Pipers River and Coal River Valley along with growers in Swansea and Ouse. Utilising a variety of blocks, different clones and slightly different aspects each of these sites made its own unique contribution to the final blend. The cooler northern maritime location at Pipers River produces Pinot Noir that is focused and structured, while the Coal River Valley in the south adds texture and softness to the mid-palate. Five to twenty five percent whole bunches were included depending on the site and maturation took place in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 9 months.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red hue. Wonderfully perfumed nose with aromas of violet, red to dark cherries, strawberries and subtle anise sailing out of the glass followed by notions of spicy cedar, forest floor and fresh herbs. Light, fresh and supple in its feel, delicious red cherry, strawberry and delicate rhubarb flavours move across the palate with forest floor, fresh herbs and spicy cedar lingering underneath. There is a lovely meaty edge to this year's Coal River Valley release. The fruits lie in the blueberry and red cherry spectrum with plenty of underlying exotic spice, poached rhubarb, pomegranate, amaro herbs, citrus blossom and a whiff of game. But it's that meaty, umami stuff on the palate that grabs you, swelling at first, some sour cherry sweeping in, tannins silty fine and a lacy mineral acid presence provides the pulse. Lovely. The Coal River is one of my favourite places for pinot noir in Tasmania. There's a beautiful fragrance to this wine, somewhere between roses and violets, holding from the first moment of its captivating bouquet to the last trace of its enduring finish. Pitch-perfect red cherries run in tandem, intricately upheld by fine, mineral tannins. A triumph. Drink by 2032.

This is also exuberantly floral in character with its pretty nose of various red berries, forest floor and a whiff of tea. The mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is not as dense or imposing though it is notably finer with focused power suffusing the compact, youthfully austere and equally built-to-age finale. While qualitatively similar to the Clos de la Roche, these are two distinctly different wines. Drink through 2035+.

The Charmes-Chambertin is in fact from Mazoyères. Brisk deep red purple. Prettily perfumed with some intensity behind and a sense of the mineral. This has quite a bit more volume than most on the palate, some dark cherry fruit, spice and immaculate length. Drink from 2032-2038.

This is also agreeably ripe and fresh with plenty of floral and earth elements on the mix of red and dark currant scents. An even cooler and more high-toned nose offers up a plethora of red berry scents that include hints of pungent earth, floral wisps and discreet but not invisible wood. This is clearly from Gevrey as the more expressive though still reserved nose flashes plenty of underbrush and sauvage elements on the dark currant and floral-suffused nose. A distinctly cool nose is also quite spicy with its array of red currant, cherry and plum. Starting out with small family holdings David, together with his business partner Francois Feuillet, have added to their portfolio of wines through the purchase of some exceptional old Grand cru vineyards throughout Gevrey Chambertin and Morey St Denis, including prime holdings of retiring vigneron Jacky Truchot.

Duband's Vosne-Romanee hails from two plots of vines located in “Les Barreaux” (about 90% of the blend) which borders Grand cru Richebourg and the great premier cru Cros Parantoux, high on the slope above the village, and from “Aux Ormes” (about 10% of the blend) which lies on the northern side of the village and further down-slope from Romanee St Vivant.

A relatively airy and cool nose freely offers up notes of various red berries, earth and a floral top note. The sleek and relatively refined middle weight flavors contrast somewhat with the youthfully austere and mildly rustic finale that exhibits slightly better depth and persistence on the more structured finale. This is quite a good Nuits villages and worth a look. Drink 2029+.

Named in honour of David’s son, Louis-Auguste, this Hautes Cotes de Nuits comes from a high altitude vineyard, and combined with some of the domaine’s oldest vines (over 55 years in age) tends to produce a wine of concentration, especially in warm vintages.

Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Perfumed violet top notes are interwoven with sour to red cherry, winter strawberry, fresh clove, delicate earth and spicy cedar notes. Light to mid weight with a vibrant yet supple feel, the palate is blessed with a savoury flavour profile of sour to red cherry and winter strawberry fruits gently infused with clove over a back drop of subtle cedar, earth and spice. Lively finish with beautifully integrated tannins and a very refined aftertaste.

The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey was showing especially well, bursting from the glass with scents of raspberries, plums, dark chocolate, spices and cinnamon, a delicate top note of rose petals emerging as it sits in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and generous, it's velvety and supple, with lively balancing acids. The Aux Thorey is especially charming this year.

Here the expressive and clearly ripe nose is compositionally similar to that of the Sentiers except that it's even spicier and a bit more exotic as well. The sleek and intense larger-scaled flavors possess a sophisticated texture while displaying focused power that carries over to the dusty, palate coating and impressively complex and lengthy finish. This is very good and the abundant sap should permit it to be approached after 7 to 8 years.

A ripe yet cool nose reflects elegant and airy aromas that include an abundance of floral elements as well as various nuances that derive mostly from the red side of the fruit spectrum. There is fine volume to the round but racy middle weight flavors that possess outstanding delineation on the stony, highly complex and persistent finish. As is always the case with the best examples of the appellation, the firm supporting tannins are relatively fine-grained and overall, this is a grand cru of power and finesse.

Scents of wild berries, cassis, peonies, licorice and potpourri preface Duband's 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, fine-boned and elegant wine with a lovely spine of acidity, refined tannins and a concentrated core of fruit. Deep and incisive, this might be the domaine's finest grand cru in 2018, though it faces stiff competition.

What we have here is a brooding pinot noir that may well fail to communicate its real strengths if you open it now but which has an excellent cellaring future ahead. This is a wine with presence if not so much prettiness; a wine rolled with tannin and tucked with spice; a wine with red liquorice and chicory riven into red cherry and cedar. It requires some coaxing, let’s say, but its quality is clear and in any case its charms fan out with air. Drink 2022-2028+

It comes from two vineyards, one at Kangaroo Ground and one at Woori Yallock, both in the Yarra Valley though pretty much at the extreme opposite ends, north and south.
It somehow manages to be fresh, modern and old school at once. By old school I’m not referring to oak, which is modest here at most, but rather to the fruit profile. It has a macerated feel; it’s built on bass and mid-range more than it is on treble; there’s a suggestion of undergrowth and forest berry to the core of red cherry. It’s neither forward nor backward and that’s not a bad place to be. Special note on this wine’s balance; it’s impeccable. Drink 2021-2026+

Fragrant scents of violet tied to dark cherries, rhubarb and dried herbs blossom out of the glass with some brambly cedar, forest floor and spice notes also evident. Blocks B, E & F. There's a decadence about this wine. It's rich and ripe – not too much, as it has a coolness of its Upper Yarra site – but more in the depth and how it feels. All the usual and pleasing flavours are pressed together, then expand across the fuller-bodied palate. Lovely smooth tannins and the finish lingers long. Drink by 2032.

PHI is the 21st letter of the Ancient Greek alphabet and symbolises balance, harmony and proportion. The Lusatia Park vineyard was purchased by the De Bortoli family in 2016 having been previously the source of some of the finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays made in the Yarra Valley. Fermented with a combination of whole berries and whole bunches the resulting wine was matured in a mix of new and used French oak barriques for a period of 7 months.

A gorgeous Yarra Valley Pinot with four trophies to its name.

Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Perfumed nose with aromas of violets, red to dark cherries, strawberries, rhubarb and hints of clove blossoming out of the glass. Lending further complexity are forest floor, brambly cedar and spice notes. Gorgeously fruited and supple in its feel, a power wave of dark cherry, strawberry and subtle rhubarb are layered across the palate with superb depth. Silky smooth tannins with notions of brambly dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar also chiming in. Expansive with a long peacocks tail like finish that’s incredibly moreish. Winner of 4 trophies at the Victorian Wine Show.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

A mix of vineyards and clones from the Lusatia Park vineyard in Woori Yallock. Bright cherry red. An immediately appealing wine with its dark cherry fruit, lavender and incense. This has good weight and depth without being heavy. A touch savoury, too, and the tannins are silky and long. Already a joy to drink, this will still be looking good four to six years from now. Drink by 2028.

Produced by the De Bortoli family from their Upper Yarra vineyard, Lusatia Park. Phi is the 21st letter of the ancient Greek alphabet and symbolises balance, harmony and proportion. It has great depth of brilliant red-purple colour and dark cherry, Campari and mixed spice aromas, the palate bright and fresh, intense and medium weighted, with plum pit flavours and a pleasant trace of bitterness to finish. It has good structure and would cellar for a few years, but it’s delicious now. True finesse and palate length.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
