While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

An exuberantly floral-inflected nose reveals notes of spice, red currant, earth and a whiff of herbal tea. There is terrific punch and delineation to the sleek, intense and stony medium weight flavors that display excellent persistent on the long, serious and well-balanced finale. One to check out.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey was showing especially well, bursting from the glass with scents of raspberries, plums, dark chocolate, spices and cinnamon, a delicate top note of rose petals emerging as it sits in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and generous, it's velvety and supple, with lively balancing acids. The Aux Thorey is especially charming this year.

Here the expressive and clearly ripe nose is compositionally similar to that of the Sentiers except that it's even spicier and a bit more exotic as well. The sleek and intense larger-scaled flavors possess a sophisticated texture while displaying focused power that carries over to the dusty, palate coating and impressively complex and lengthy finish. This is very good and the abundant sap should permit it to be approached after 7 to 8 years.

A ripe yet cool nose reflects elegant and airy aromas that include an abundance of floral elements as well as various nuances that derive mostly from the red side of the fruit spectrum. There is fine volume to the round but racy middle weight flavors that possess outstanding delineation on the stony, highly complex and persistent finish. As is always the case with the best examples of the appellation, the firm supporting tannins are relatively fine-grained and overall, this is a grand cru of power and finesse.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundScents of wild berries, cassis, peonies, licorice and potpourri preface Duband's 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, fine-boned and elegant wine with a lovely spine of acidity, refined tannins and a concentrated core of fruit. Deep and incisive, this might be the domaine's finest grand cru in 2018, though it faces stiff competition.

There is a whiff of herbal tea sitting atop the pure essence of pomegranate, red cherry and earth along with a hint of the sauvage. The lighter weight flavors possess a beguiling sense of verve that carries over to the youthfully austere and mildly rustic finale. This too could use a bit more depth but it's undeniably pretty.

A blend of fruit from Woori Yallock in the upper Yarra and Kangaroo Ground. Destemmed but keeping as many whole berries as possible. Matured in a combination of barriques and puncheons (15% new). From the oldest vines on the Lone Star Creek vineyard at Woori Yallock.
What we have here is a brooding pinot noir that may well fail to communicate its real strengths if you open it now but which has an excellent cellaring future ahead. This is a wine with presence if not so much prettiness; a wine rolled with tannin and tucked with spice; a wine with red liquorice and chicory riven into red cherry and cedar. It requires some coaxing, let’s say, but its quality is clear and in any case its charms fan out with air. Drink 2022-2028+

It comes from two vineyards, one at Kangaroo Ground and one at Woori Yallock, both in the Yarra Valley though pretty much at the extreme opposite ends, north and south.
It somehow manages to be fresh, modern and old school at once. By old school I’m not referring to oak, which is modest here at most, but rather to the fruit profile. It has a macerated feel; it’s built on bass and mid-range more than it is on treble; there’s a suggestion of undergrowth and forest berry to the core of red cherry. It’s neither forward nor backward and that’s not a bad place to be. Special note on this wine’s balance; it’s impeccable. Drink 2021-2026+

Made with 10% whole bunches and matured in French puncheons (33% new). A medium ruby garnet. A little reduction, which quickly blows off to reveal aromas of wild strawberries, damson plums, a little rose petal and subtle hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. There's good intensity on the medium-bodied palate together with fine but firm tannins. This will only get better over the next four to six years, if not longer.

Denton is owned and operated by father & son, John & Simon Denton. With their combined experience in architecture & hospitality, they established the property in 1996 and planted the vineyard between 1997 & 2004. The "View Hill" vineyard is situated in Yarra Glen on an isolated hill set over granitic sandy soil on a north-facing aspect. Luke Lambert has overseen winemaking since 2015, contributing his years of Yarra Valley experience making great Chardonnay & Pinot Noir.
Pinot Noir is grown on the very top of the North Eastern slope where it receives more gentle morning sunlight and does not see so much of the afternoon heat. The vineyard is planted at a very high density of 1.3m x 0.8m which contributes heaps of power and concentration. Wild fermented on skins (with a 60% Wholebunch inclusion) for 21 days with frequent plunging, the wine is then pressed to French Oak Puncheons (13% being new oak) for maturation. The 2021 growing season has resulted in a wine with heaps of bright, fresh red and black fruit, and floral aromas while supported by fine tannin and good structure from acidity.

Matured in French oak (25% new). Just bottled and this little gem is looking and delivering the goods already. Mid red and cloudy, it's delicate in fragrance, supple in texture and what spice on the palate! Smart winemaking here. All up, a carefully managed youngster with time on its hands. Drink by 2027.

There’s a fruit party going on here with loads of wild strawberries, red cherries and cranberries, spicy, too with snips of fresh basil and menthol plus heady florals mainly roses. The palate is mid-weighted, and a fruit succulence comes through so, too, layers of tannins with the sweet oak adding a hint of bitter green walnut on the finish. In its youth, there’s a prettiness as complexity will come with age. Drink by 2033.

We seem to have missed the 2020 and 2021 vintages, but there you go. Anyway, a solid performer over many years.Cherry, strawberry, a little spice, floral and autumnal, with a subtle mint top note. It’s medium-bodied, red fruits and spice, with light cedar oak, fine pumice stone tannin, cool acidity, and a juicy strawberry finish of precision and fine length. A quiet confidence here, never trying too hard, and all about delicacy and restraint. Lovely wine. Drink 2024-2032+

The Dexter family vineyard was planted in 1987. Tod Dexter himself has 40 years of winemaking experience. I think he must have started making wine at aged 12. Excellent release. Firm, spicy and a touch meaty, in a positive way, with graphite and succulent poached strawberry flavours putting on a confident display. There are mint notes here and a touch of warmth too, along with plum, along with roasted nut. Balance here is key; everything here feels poised and placed with care. Dexter, the TV series, held me for a few series, but then waned when I couldn’t continue believing Michael C Hall as the serial killer protagonist. It just started to fray at the edges. A shame when series do that. That first series though… anyways, Tod ‘no extra d’ Dexter, is one heck of a quality producer of Mornington Peninsula regional staples. Here’s the anticipated 2017 release.
It’s a more assertive release from Dexter, a little less delicate, but still well under the boxing weight of most pinot noir from the region. It holds its succulence and feathery tannins well, it’s loaded with cherry juice and pomegranate fruit scents and flavours, it offers a sprinkle of herb n spice to taste. It’s exceptionally long in flavour too. Indeed, it’s a beautiful wine when you take stock of it all, and best of all, drinkability is high. A really lovely expression once more. Drink 2018-2026.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
