Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Carmel Road is based in the town of Soledad, inland from Monterey’s rugged coastline and along the Arroyo Seco river. The first vintage was released in 1999 with the winery producing cool climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc that showcase the elegance of California's coastal vineyards.
100% Pinot Noir from Central Coast vineyards featuring red fruit, warm spice and supple texture. Semi translucent dark red colour with black toned edges and a light brick red hue. Spicy cherry and rhubarb scents are trailed by dried herb and subtle earthy cedar notes. Fleshy dark cherry and strawberry fruits overlay dried herb, earth and spicy cedar notes. Caroline Morey comes from a long line of vignerons based in the Cotes de Beaune and is also married to Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. In 2014 Caroline took her share of some family vineyards from her father Jean-Marc and created her own domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet, working out of brand new cellars built for Caroline and her husband.

For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.

    Other Reviews....
Pretty and ripe aromas are comprised by notes of mostly red berries, pepper and soft earth. The vibrant and delicious middleweight flavors are sappy and caressing while offering good length on the refreshing, dry and balanced finale. This lightly stony effort could use more depth so 1 to 3 years of keeping should help. Drink through 2026+.

Old vines in cordon training in Les Chênes, Chambres and Les Pierres across the main road. No great depth of colour here but the bouquet is super-fine for a Chassagne, still with good grip behind. A little more insular personality than the Santenay, possibly less fine, but I like its character. Drink from 2026-2031.

An admirably pure, cool and pretty nose is also quite floral with its spicy aromas of lilac, violet and rose petal adding elegance to the blend of both red and dark pinot fruit. There is very good delineation and underlying tension to the lighter weight flavors that terminate in a lightly austere and stony finale. This too could use better depth but despite the light weight flavors, more should reasonably develop before full maturity. Drink through 2027+.

The 2021 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru (Rouge), which contains 50% whole bunches like the Chassagne Champ Gain, has a well-defined bouquet with red plum, raspberry and light loamy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a peppery opening, the stems rather conspicuous at the moment and perhaps just dominating the finish, though they will assimilate by the time of bottling. Drink 2025-2033.

Light ruby hue. This is also extremely pretty with similar aromas of red berries and an even broader array of floral nuances. Once again, there is just a bit more volume and mid-palate density to the lingering and balanced finish. This could use better depth but a few years of keeping should help to address that. The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Champ Gain 1er Cru (Rouge) has a lovely bouquet with raspberry, cranberry and subtle mineral scents. Transparent like Morey's other reds. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fresh red fruit, quite piquant with a dash of black pepper on the finish. Fine, but needs a year or two in bottle. Drink 2025-2033.

An unusually perfumed and exceptionally pretty nose freely reveals its aromas of the essence of various red berries, pepper and an appealing variety of floral elements. There is more volume and richness still to the vibrant and attractively textured flavors that are also largely built on their fruit, which should permit this delicious effort to be enjoyed on the younger side. The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet is a blend of three vineyards. It has a little more concentration on the nose compared to the two Santenays with raspberry and wild strawberry to the fore. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, fresh and chalky, lively with a brittle, you could almost say "bony" finish that is full of tension and freshness. Drink 2024-2031.

Classic ruby color. Bright red berry fruit aromas enjoy added breadth in the form of violet, lilac, pepper and earth nuances. The mouthfeel of the slightly richer flavors possess better precision and a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the moderately firmer finale. This could also be popped and poured young or aged for a few years first. Drink through 2026+.

The 2021 Santenay Comme 1er Cru, located on the Chassagne boundary, has an open-knit cranberry and tomato vines-scented bouquet that is well-defined and transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly coarse tannins, pretty red fruit laced with pepper and a lively simple finish. Fine. Drink 2024-2030.

35% whole bunch from the sunnier spot. Just a trifle darker in colour and in fruit style, raspberries here, with maybe a point more concentration. Good tannins in a fresher style with the fruit returning behind. Significant intensity and riper right at the back.

Three plots, 40% of whole bunch (from Les Chênes which is pinot fin). Quite dense purple, with a volume of concentrated dense fruit, yet still with a valuable fresher underlay. There is grip almost to the extent of bitterness here, but I think that works – and I do like the fact that the fruit is not cooked.

This is also relatively high-toned as the fruit derives more from the red side of the spectrum. There is a bit more volume and mid-palate density to the rich and nicely energetic medium-bodied flavors that aren't as fine but do offer slightly better depth in an age-worthy package. Good stuff.

Mid red to purple, picked in late August. Long rows of 450m go all the way up the slope, though interrupted by the patch in the middle which was replanted to chardonnay in 1999. 40% whole bunch vinification is employed. That character shows in refined raspberry and fresh strawberry, but the core of Grèves shows through too. Surprisingly rich fruit on the palate with just a touch of chocolate too. Very good length.

Only Caroline and her brother have pinot vines in this vineyard, 22 ares together. Mid-red purple with an exquisitely fine bouquet. This is really classy, fine-boned pinot yet with real density. Excellent balance, this could be from a much more acclaimed red wine village. The 40% whole bunch component is nicely integrated.

25% whole bunch vinification has been employed for this vineyard which is a continuity of Grand Clos Rousseau towards the village, on a good slope. Lightish purple, pleasing light perfume, a little bit cherry register. Medium-bodied with a few tannins, some orange blossom notes in with the light red fruit. Fills out the back of the palate nicely.

An exuberantly fresh and relatively high-toned nose features a ripe array of cherry, raspberry and spice. There is fine richness
to the round and attractively textured flavors though once again there is a hint of dryness that's enough to compromise the overall
    sense of balance.

Here there is no barnyard funk on the fresh pepper, earth and essence of red currant scents. The racy, intense and delicious lighter weight flavors possess a bit more volume though the length on the mildly rustic finish is also a bit short.

This also displays very subtle hints of barnyard on the fresh red currant and pepper-inflected earth nuances. There is more volume to the lightly stony middle weight flavors that once again exhibit just a touch of dryness on the otherwise acceptably persistent finish.

Estate fruit, machine harvested and handpicked. 10 months on medium lees of which 25% was new oak and 15% whole bunch. Much like Champagne maisons hold their NV wine high and mighty, Castle Rock’s estate Pinot Noir sets the benchmark for quality. You’ll find preserved strawberries, wild hibiscus, dark cherries and notes of savoury wagyu bresaola. Torn rosemary, pine needle and bay leaf. Sweet blackberry wine gums and licorice root. Sappy tannins and a thread of straight shooting acidity. There is a chew to the red berried fruit and a nice crunch of pomegranate seed on the finish. A well rounded wine. Drink now and will cellar another 3-4 years. A perfect partner to black truffled scrambled eggs on sourdough. Drink 2024-2028.

A vivid, fine-boned and tightly wound pinot noir of exceptional length and persistence with vibrant, effusive perfume. Red cherry at the tarter end of the spectrum with twiggy wood notes, some faint eucalyptus, white pepper, mezcal spiciness and a sense of freshness overall. Tannins are lacy, ultra-fine and tighten the wine well. It's delicate, almost blink and you'll miss, but the filigree is all here. Drink by 2034.

A more accessible wine than its stubborn whole-bunch pinot sibling. As it should be, given the price. But drinking this light-weighted pinot only asserts the virtues of sappy fruit – all red cherry and sassafras – judicious use of bunches and a modest amount of oak serving to compress the fruit, rather than extolling its excess. This is far from complex, but delicious drinking in leu of regional climatic challenges. Drink by 2027.

From a relatively older vineyard located near Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. Wild-yeast fermented. A bright but pale ruby colour in the glass makes things easy on the eye. This lightness and vivacity are reflected strongly in the wine, decidedly fine-boned with refreshing red cherry, pomegranate juice and an almost watermelon/granite sweet tang rolling through. Very pretty pinot noir, delicate and thirst-quenching in a way. An attractive crunch to texture and good length seal the deal. It feels lithe and wildly appealing for its suggestion of early consumption, or dare we suggest direct from an ice bucket too. Drink by 2026.

    $2880.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

There’s something quietly thrilling about the wines of Cellier Saint Benoit. Based in Arbois Pupillin, Benjamin Benoit’s domaine is still young by any standard, yet the clarity and character of his wines place them firmly among the Jura’s most compelling new voices. After time spent with Charles Lachaux, Amélie Berthaut, and Nicolas Faure in Burgundy, Benoit returned home earlier than planned in 2019 following the sudden passing of his father. That year marked his first vintage, and by 2020, he had full control of the domaine — bringing with him a clear and focused vision rooted in both tradition and precision.

Rather than blending parcels, Benoit vinifies and bottles his lieux-dits separately, giving each site its own voice. The 6.25 hectares of vines — planted to Chardonnay, Savagnin, Ploussard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir — are farmed with care, and the cellar work is firmly low-intervention. Inspired by the techniques of Pierre Overnoy, Benoit works with minimal inputs: careful destemming of Ploussard by hand, whole-cluster ferments for Trousseau and Pinot Noir, gentle pressing of whole bunches for the whites, and aging in neutral oak. The use of sulphur is minimal, and in some cuvées, absent altogether. The result is a suite of wines that feel clear-eyed and precise, yet still vibrant and soulful — wines that make you stop and pay attention.

They’re not inexpensive, but they are important. As the Jura continues to evolve and mature, Benoit’s wines feel like a glimpse of where things are headed, a signpost for the future of Arbois Pupillin, honouring the region’s heritage but elevated by a new generation’s clarity of purpose.

Sourced from 0.5 ha of Pinot Noir planted on the fossil-rich calcaire à gryphées soils of the Courbes Raies vineyard in Pupillin. The site is west-facing, and the vines—planted by Benjamin Benoit’s father and grandfather—range from the mid-1980s back to approximately 1959. The fruit is vinified as 100% whole bunches in large Grenier tronconic vats, then aged in a mix of 228-litre barrels and 600-litre demi-muids. The site, soils, and older vine material contribute to a structured and mineral style of Jura Pinot Noir, shaped by Burgundian influences in both viticulture and élevage.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Arbois Pupillin Courbes Raies unwinds with a distinctively floral perfume as rose petal and violets rise from the glass. Ripe red cherry and spicy nuances add more layers. Medium-bodied and polished, the juicy 2022 delights the taster with uplifting freshness. Round and complete, it walks off the stage with an elegant finish. Drink 2024-2032.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
