While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. JamesSuckling.comThe 2021 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir is alive and energetic, svelte and composed. As I write this, I am sitting at the bottom of the Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn, looking up the rows. This is a mineral, nuanced expression, with graphite and white tea, pomegranate pearls, raspberry licorice, rosehips and crushed pink peppercorns. This is what I came here for. It’s thrilling, lacy, delicate and focused. Exciting wine, exciting drinking. A blend of two vineyards – Burn Cottage Vineyard (Lowburn) and Sauvage Vineyard (Bannockburn).
Rarely is a Pinot Noir from Central Otago so supple, delicious and easy to drink as this little number. Cherry and squishy berries, dried herb and plenty of spice, a little fresh mint and rose perfume. Tannin is fleshy and plentiful, yet soft and gently mouth-coating. Finish is all spice and strawberry with a subtle meaty character, leaving emery board tannin in its wake. Love it. Great drinking now. Drink 2021 - 2024.

This is a terrific Pinot Noir - great to drink now despite the sneaking feeling it's going to get even better with bottle age. Pinot from estate source and Mark II (Pisa) and Northburn (Northburn) sub-regions.
Fleshy, fuller figured Otago pinot expression, laden with ripe cherry fruits, sweet spice, some earthy-charry characters, and an orange-y acidity. While ostensibly ‘fruitier’ it’s also quite firmly in the amaro-Campari spectrum of pinot, hemmed with chalky tannins, driving with authority across the palate. Loaded with character/structure. The 2019 Pinot Noir Burn Cottage Vineyard is like a taste of Christmas with its decadent baking spices combining with plum fruit and pure black cherry. There's lovely clarity of fruit and an intense core of youthful fruit flavors within its mid-weight frame. The remaining angles are those of an awkward teenager rather than a shape that will last into adulthood. The abundant, chewy tannins are resolved and will continue to mellow with bottle age (or if served with roast duck), and in combination with fine acidity, they provide the packaging for this unadulterated wine. The finish lingers long, offering baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, along black cherry and mocha. Drink 2022 - 2032.

JamesSuckling.com (February 2022)Burnt cottage is what happened to many English people, who held property in North Wales, back in the day. I remember that well, and also the day I missed an IRA bomb going off in Warrington town centre by about 5 minutes, back in the 90s. No joke. Exciting times!
Invariably one of the nuttiest, and nattiest feeling wines from Central Otago, and no change here. Cherry pie, almond paste, spice and aniseed, with a fresh thyme, rosemary and rose perfume. It’s fleshy, silty and nutty, a scorched hazelnut and chocolate flavour, soft acidity and fine silty tannin. The finish is all wheaty, spicy and plump with dried raspberry and cherry. Delightful. 2023 Sangreal By Farr Pinot NoirGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$135. 00Bottle$1620.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: Diam CorkPlanted in 1994, Sangreal is By Farr’s oldest vineyard, lying on a north-facing slope with bluestone and limestone soils streaked with red ironstone. Its unique north–south orientation and long exposure to sunlight produce Pinot Noir of lift, perfume, and seamless elegance. Over the decades, the 114 and 115 clones have evolved into what the Farrs call the “Sangreal clone,” giving this site its own microclimate identity.
The 2023 vintage was crafted with 70% whole bunches and matured in 70% new French oak. Following a four-day cold soak, fermentation occurred naturally before 18 months of élevage. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, Sangreal delivers a highly perfumed and finely structured expression of Pinot Noir—consistently the most seamless and aromatic of the By Farr single-vineyard wines.

There are no seams and yet there is such complexity. Smoked cherries, earth, beet, cedar, twiggy herbs and red roses; all these characters contribute, all juicy and joyous, all though tightened by a fine web of tannin. There’s immense life on both the nose and on the palate but there’s drama reserved for the finish, which shows characters of rust, steel, earth, spice and smoke. It’s captivating. It’s lengthy. It’s exceptional. Drink 2026-2033+.

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine FrontSour cherry and cream. Green pepper, cornichon, dried citrus peel. Loads of brown spice like mace, cloves and even a waft of cardamom. I just had the smallest sip, and this wine just mushrooms out, that classic peacocks tail writ large across my palate. It’s so intense and complex. It has an acid level equal to its myriad layers, which just heightens the excitement of this wine. In my wine life I have tasted many wines, but no winery l can think of comes close to a house style as Wine By Farr. Like it or love it, you can tell who grew and made these wines. This wine was grown on Farr’s Cote Vineyard. RP refers to Robyn Pamela who, according to the Farr website, “has been in the vineyard and planted the first vines, driven the tractors, filled barrels and pigeaged at midnight. If we are ever a man down Robyn has always been the first one we have called to fill the void no matter the job, no matter the time of day. You can always count on mum.”
This wine is so inherently Farr, and so inherently Pinot Noir, and so inherently Geelong. It’s cherried and spicy, dry and structured, but it’s also ripped with earth, beet, rhubarb and something akin to potpourri-dipped-in-tonic water. It’s more savoury than sweet and yet it’s ripe. Smoked cedar notes are apparent but they are so well meshed with the fruit that you start to second guess whether they’re there at all. All told, this is a beautiful wine, of character. The By Farr team is completely unafraid of (anything, really, but most especially) tannin and firmness, thanks to inherent confidence in, and knowledge of, the fact that it serves their wines so well. This wine is an excellent case in point, its twiggy herb, undergrowth, and smoky-sweet oak flavours combine beautifully with sweet, convincing red and black cherry flavours, the whole then commandingly pulled together by firm, dry, ripe tannin. This is a truly beautiful wine, pinned to the spot in the best of ways. Drink by 2032.

Notes from the producer....
The Farr Rising pinot vineyard was planted in 2001 using a large mixture of rootstocks, but only three clones—MV6, 114 and 115. It is a very exposed and hungry north-facing slope, consisting of grey sandy loam mixed with an ironstone pebble (buckshot) at the top. This leads into black volcanic soil over limestone at the bottom of the vineyard.
The fruit is hand harvested, and then sorted in the vineyard. The fruit is fermented in an open-top fermenter, and an average 60 to 70 per cent of it is destemmed. The wine is placed in 20 to 30 per cent new Allier barrels by gravity. It is racked by gas after secondary fermentation, then again at 18 months to be bottled. Over time, the site has shown that it can certainly stand up to its bigger brothers.
The wine typically shows a soft perfumed nose, which begins to build. The palate has sweetness, followed by mineral overtones enhanced by toasty oak, and firm flavours with a long and savoury finish. This is a gem of a wine, with ageing potential of five to eight years from most vintages. - 2020 By Farr RP Cote Vineyard Pinot NoirGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$165. 00Bottle$1980.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam Cork

Bright red to dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Soaring out of the glass are perfumed aromatics of violets, red cherries, winter strawberries and a whiff of sour cherries which are complimented by subtle clove, forest floor and spicy cedar. Silky on entry, intense red cherry, red plum and winter strawberry fruits fan across the palate with all the grace of a peacocks tail. Slightly more masculine tannins and brighter acidity provide formidable structure. Long and very savoury conclusion.

Medium to full red colour with a tinge of purple and a touch of new leather to sniff, smoked meats and spices, the bunchy style of bouquet at a far remove from simple grapy fruit aromas. Floral notes emerge with airing time. The wine is full-bodied and firmly structured, a serious pinot that will take many years in its stride and needs time to show its best. Power with finesse. A superb pinot. Drink: 2020 to 2033.

What a truly, seriously good wine this is. I’m not sure how they produced this from the 2018 season but produce it they have.
Length. Power. Personality. And presence. Not set within a varietal straight-jacket but set within a varietal context. Undergrowth, tang, woodsmoke, sweet-meaty-spices, more length, more dry flavour-infused tannin, more dazzle, more substance, more than you could expect or beg to ask. I looked at this over the course of 24 hours and but the end my head was spinning. I love wine. I loved this wine. This frankly is what it’s all about. Drink 2021-2030+

It takes time in the glass for assertive cedar wood oak to settle into the fruit but at all steps along the way this wine oozes both quality and class. You're in the most skilled of hands here. Here 40– 50% of the grapes are destemmed, the remainder left as whole bunches, and this increases complexity with its foresty, gamey (in the good sense), spicy overlay to the black cherry and plum fruit. The outstanding feature of the wine is its weight, suspended by some magic just above the palate – you sense it rather than taste it.

A meld of Dijon clones and the domestic stalwart, MV6, this abuts the lauded Sangreal Vineyard, albeit, the vines are younger, of a cooler disposition and hailing from darker soils over a limestone substrata. Love the tannin structure of this wine. It feels both perfumed and inlaid with fruit, but more impressively it sheets across the wine in a wide spread, integrated and balanced while at the same time being assertive. It gives the wine a bit of class, not that it lacked it in the first place. This is a polished release, with varietal red berried fruit flavours splashed with earth, chicory and dry spice. It’s ultra primary now, as you’d expect, but it feels settled, and so it’s already drinking well. Fruit and the formation of tannin here though are its main quality markers. Drink 2023-2029+

Caroline Morey comes from a long line of vignerons based in the Cotes de Beaune and is also married to Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. In 2014 Caroline took her share of some family vineyards from her father Jean-Marc and created her own domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet, working out of brand new cellars built for Caroline and her husband.
For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.
Other Reviews....
Pretty and ripe aromas are comprised by notes of mostly red berries, pepper and soft earth. The vibrant and delicious middleweight flavors are sappy and caressing while offering good length on the refreshing, dry and balanced finale. This lightly stony effort could use more depth so 1 to 3 years of keeping should help. Drink through 2026+.

Old vines in cordon training in Les Chênes, Chambres and Les Pierres across the main road. No great depth of colour here but the bouquet is super-fine for a Chassagne, still with good grip behind. A little more insular personality than the Santenay, possibly less fine, but I like its character. Drink from 2026-2031.

Light ruby hue. This is also extremely pretty with similar aromas of red berries and an even broader array of floral nuances. Once again, there is just a bit more volume and mid-palate density to the lingering and balanced finish. This could use better depth but a few years of keeping should help to address that. Drink through 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Champ Gain 1er Cru (Rouge) has a lovely bouquet with raspberry, cranberry and subtle mineral scents. Transparent like Morey's other reds. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fresh red fruit, quite piquant with a dash of black pepper on the finish. Fine, but needs a year or two in bottle. Drink 2025-2033.
