Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. The 2020 Volnay Santenots 1er Cru was one of the earliest ripening in this vintage. Precocious black cherries and a touch of kirsch on the nose, the palate is sweet and chewy, candied red fruit laced with orange peel with an almost Gamay-like on the finish (there’s none in here of course.) That’s probably because of the very small berries (375kg equated to one barrel). Drink 2026-2040.

Glorious glowing purple colour and the nose is beautifully balanced too, picked at the right time (i.e. first!) Gorgeous full red fruit with some blood orange, very juicy, excellent balance with the tannins, the clay soil contributing to the powerfully long aftertaste.

The 2020 Bourgogne Rouge has a perfumed red cherry and cranberry jus scented bouquet - a little "fluffy" perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied, oddly reminding me of a New Zealand Pinot with a juicy tart red cherry finish. Drink 2023-2026.

Fresh vibrant purple, riotously juicy fruit on the nose, exuberant but lovely. Medium plus in body, all red fruit on the palate, just right acidity and tannins are hardly showing. Textbook!

A marvellous result, with a lovely plummy fruit, a hint of mineral and a bit of spice. The texture is totally Burgundian - light, ephemeral, but hauntingly long on the palate. Produced from a variety of parcels that total 3ha. The fruit is carefully fermented and aged in large oak uprights without racking. Drink 2022 - 2030.

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Jarrons 1er Cru has an attractive nose with dark berry fruit, crushed stone, briary and touches of Earl Grey. Quite complex. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, fine grip with a vibrant and slightly minty finish. Very fine. Drink 2025-2040.

Bright vibrant purple, deep raspberry with some currants too, this has a fresh overlay and is well in harmony, with an excellent fruit acid balance, much more than tannins. Good length too, showing very well in quite a refined style. 14.2% (an outlier chez Leroux) but this really does not show.

The 2020 Volnay Village comes from two climats. This nose feels quite backward at the moment, later offers black plum, mint and undergrowth aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, fleshy, good backbone with a finely proportioned finish. Very fine. Drink 2025-2035.

There is a little declassified 1er cru in the blend. Attractive mid purple, the nose is quite restrained but has retained freshness to the fruit, good tannins which are not too dry and a classy long red fruit behind with some floral touches too.

A mentholated top note is present on the more restrained nose of red berries, underbrush and a touch of humus. The delicious medium weight flavors possess a relatively supple mid-palate that immediately tightens up on the youthfully austere and moderately rustic finish that flashes outstanding depth and persistence for a villages level wine. This built-to-age effort is excellent. Drink 2029+.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village reveals appealing aromas of red berries, plums, spices and loamy soil, followed by a medium-bodied palate with lively acids but rather chewy, somewhat rustic tannins on this showing. Perhaps it was just out of sorts when I tasted it. Drink 2021 - 2035.

62 barrels of which the component in new barrels has been racked. Heady and delicious, yet very well balanced, so lively, good natural acidity, fruit at optimum ripeness, light on its feet and very long. Frankly, this is a brilliant cuvée and there is plenty of it!

There is a vague whiff of menthol to the equally pretty aromas of various red berries, orange peel, spiced tea and rose petal. The lacy, delicious and appealingly textured medium-bodied flavors possess a building intensity that culminates in a dusty and youthfully austere finish. This solidly persistent effort needs more depth, but the underlying material appears to be present such that more should develop in time. Drink 2027+.

Another success is the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans, an aromatic, perfumed wine that bursts with notions of peonies, plums and orange rind. Medium-bodied, lively and charming, with melting tannins and a supple, demonstrative profile, it will drink well young. Drink 2021 - 2035.

The 2019 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has an elegant bouquet of red cherries, crushed strawberry and light crushed rock aromas that become more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, the tiny proportion of whole bunch imparting a soupçon of pepperiness toward the finish. Very fine. Drink 2023 - 2038.

Discreet wood is present on the very fresh aromas of red and dark berries, plum and a dollop of Savigny style earth. If consumers are surprised to see Grampians Riesling taking it up to the more noteworthy Riesling regions, they are often doubly taken aback to see how good Grampians Pinot can be. With vines dating back to the 1860s and with more recent plantings in the 1980s, Best’s old vine Pinot plantings definitely play a role here in the quality stakes. Bright, glistening red hues. Alluring scents come out to play in pomegranate, cherry and cranberry with just a touch of blood orange rind and a small pinch of spice and vanilla. While cedary oak provides a steady background note, the palate is given over to red cherries and earth with a touch of Amaro bitters, sinewy in mouth feel, slightly savoury in edge and finishing dry and clean. It gives Grampians Pinot Noir a good name and is most definitely a wine to be taken seriously. Drink 2023-2032.

Picked 21 days earlier than the '17, but with near-identical chemical analysis. Destemmed whole berry ferment, 19 days on skins including cold soak and post-ferment settling. One of Yarra Valley’s most feted modern winemakers, Dave Bicknell emerged out of a hotbed of talent that was De Bortoli around the turn of the millennium and took Oakridge Estate to new heights. Applecross is his own venture which he founded with his viticulturalist wife, Nicky Harris. Close planted in 1988 on the top of the hill in Gladysdale that’s particularly steep the Applecross vineyard is the source of fruit.

A superb Yarra Valley Pinot Noir that’s both intense and powerful yet light on its feet.

Semi translucent bright dark red colour with subtlety black tinged edges and a light red hue. The nose shows wonderful fragrance and intensity with scents of violets, dark cherries, strawberries and anise pursued by forest floor, fresh herbs and a spicy meatiness. Flooding the palate with great drive are delicious ripe cherry and strawberry fruits within a supple yet elegant mouthfeel. Infusions of fresh herbs, forest floor, faint anise and spice sit underneath. Vibrant yet perfectly balanced acidity lends freshness and polished tannins carry the wonderfully pure and intense layers of fruit which flow onto the long, powerful finish.

It's not often I prefer a Yarra producer's pinot over his/her chardonnay, particularly when speaking of wines from a master of the craft, David Bicknell. This said, the '17 vintage has conferred a cool climate edge to the Yarra's signature juiciness across a veil of crunchy berry fruits, straying into hints of mulch, woodsy porcini and root spice. The spindle of tannins keeps everything humming to a moreish conclusion. Delicious! Drink by 2026.

The chardonnay is excellent. But this Pinot Noir …
I started tasting this without knowing its price but after a couple of sips I was quickly hunting around; I wanted some. It’s a beautiful expression of the variety. Mouthwatering in its freshness, strewn with herbs, pushed with just-enough cranberry and black cherry and laced with exquisitely formed tannin. Its release also coincides with Block 8 and Darshan 2020s and ‘22s. Don’t be confused. Just remember the facts. Truth is, Block 5 is gorgeous in its youth but does build more depth in time – as in five or so years. A gentle grip and tension to finish will provide solid aging potential. Drink 2025 - 2035.

A lighter, cooler feel about this wine, full of exotic spices, Moroccan mint, twiggy and stalky with rose petals, just-ripe cherries and blood orange. Flavours ebb and flow; there’s an elegance and lift, the palate lighter framed with fine sandpaper tannins and raspberry sorbet acidity. A lovely wine. Drink 2025 - 2035.

Deeply perfumed aromas of wild raspberries, dried strawberries, graphite, citrus peel and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of cherries, plums, blueberries and cassia bark. A wonderful balance of power and restraint, with such a high level of complexity and tension. Drink or hold.

Bindi's Block 8 Pinot Noir is sourced from their newer 2016 "high-density" vineyard planting. This block is planted with 8,888 vines (composed of 7 different clones) and is the eighth block established at Bindi. It includes a section of “Crazy” 22,600 vines per hectare experimental section, truly pushing the limits of extreme viticulture. Fruit is fermented in open vats and matured in French oak barrels of which 50% are new for 15-17 months.

    Other Reviews....
Bindi aficionados know the inaugural release of Block 8, off the high-density site planted in ’16, was vintage 2021 – a spectacular debut. Obviously the ’19 and ’20 wines were bottled; having tasted all a few years back, well ’21 was off-the-charts, the others very good but not in the same league or needed more time. However, I loved ’19 then and today. It is riper, fleshier by Bindi standards. It’s perfumed with savoury inputs some forest floor, cherries and pips, a little earthy. Fuller bodied, layers of flavour with plush tannins and decent structure. Aged 16 months in French barriques (50% new) – and the wood has imparted a cedary sweetness and slight green walnut note. Just a bit of seasoning, though. Drink 2024-2034.

The high-density Darshan block was planted in 2014 to 11,300 vines per ha in a 1.1m x 0.8m spacing, Block 8 the same. That’s high-density folks. Despite launching the 2021 vintage a year ago, Michael Dhillon has shifted release dates of some wines, hence this ’17. Perfumed with touches of sumac, musk, joss sticks with rhubarb and cherries. The palate is light/lean-ish, a little sinewy yet layered with tannins and tangy acidity. Not the most complex in the line-up but a thoughtful wine, refreshing and lovely. Drink 2024 - 2034.

Fruit is fermented in open vats, 100% de-stemmed and matured in French oak barrels of which 10-15% are new for a period of 10 months. This wine shows a lively scent of red and black cherries, wild strawberries, earth, and spices. Matured for 15 months on yeast lees in French oak barrels, 1/3 being new oak. Sourced from vines planted in 1988, the 2022 vintage is showing pure red cherry, raspberry and ripe strawberry aromas. It is typically floral and gently spicy, a little savoury and very seductive.

Red cherry, sweet strawberry, Campari/burnt orange peel, baking spices, cedar, a fair bit of mint too. It’s all sweet poached strawberry infused with spice and orange oil, a bit sappy and minty, kind of juicy and glossy too, a fine graphite grip to tannin, ripe tomato on a finish of good length. It’s a specific style of wine, distinctly Macedon/Australian, and the shape of it is very good. It’s a bit too minty/gum leafy for my tastes, though it’s a wine of distinct character for sure. Vineyard planted in 2013. It’s named for Michael Dhillon’s Dad.
Plenty of spice, quite sappy and mulchy, poached strawberry and rhubarb, a little mint/aniseed. Medium-bodied, sappy with a tomato and amaro edge, red fruits, but leaning toward more autumnal and savoury flavours, firm powdery tannin grip, juicy blood orange and strawberry on the finish, with pleasing sort of graphite tannin grip to close. It’s not a wine I love, as in, I’d rather a bit more fruit purity, though I do appreciate its personality and style. Drink 2023 - 2030+

When a wine is named after your late father (and founder of Bindi), the wonderful Darshan Singh Dhillon, there’s a lot of emotion involved. Made by Darshan's son, winemaker Michael, this comes off Bindi’s first high-density site, planted in 2014 (11,300 vines per ha). This is a lovely wine, heady with autumn leaves after rain, rhubarb, beetroot and pomegranate. Very savoury yet sweetly spiced and tangy with suppleness and fine tannins with some grit and grip. A fitting tribute. Drink 2023 - 2031.

For me, and that’s my job, this is better than the Block 8, but lesser than the Block 5. Same price. Although, they all have distinctly different personalities, which is as it should be.
Quite spicy, all cinnamon and nutmeg over sweet potato, strawberry. mint and rhubarb. Medium-bodied, kind of sappy and red fruited, plenty of tang and spice, with a dusty feel to tannin, a sweet earthy beetroot thing happening, good energy, some tomato sweetness, fine grip and a bit of a ‘mineral’ and ironstone, cool lively acidity, and a finish of excellent length. The texture is dusty and firm, although ripeness here is maybe on the cusp, but yeah, edgy is better than being flaccid. Still a wine of great interest and vivacity. Sappy, white peppery, and good. No shortage of personality. Drink 2025 - 2033+

Rarely does a new wine make my heart skip a beat. But if exquisite and exceptional, it happens. It did with Block 8, which I feel needs a more poignant name. Nonetheless, how best to describe this as it’s both Mona Lisa and The Starry Night, Bach and Miles Davis, yin and yang. Everything is in harmony. You don’t simply taste this, you feel this pinot noir. It speaks of its place and moves you as a result. At the most rudimentary level, it has a core of excellent fruit, all dark cherries, maraschino and spice with a little amaro lift, the oak a light flutter throughout. Fuller bodied and supple with stunning tannins all silky and ethereal with fine acidity. It lingers long. It’s thought-provoking. It’s extraordinary, more so, knowing the block was planted in 2016 but is high density (11,300 vines per ha, which equals 8,888 vines as it’s about three-quarters of a ha). Respect, Michael Dhillon.

Red and black cherry, dried rose, peppermint tea, a little earthy too, showing noticeable baking spice oak as a young wine. Medium-bodied, rose and cherry, baked raspberry, praline and biscuit oak, rich fruit with sappy acidity, has something of a tomato flavour, which I’m a little less keen on, firm silty/powdery tannin, and a distinct amaro/orange peel tang on a finish of good length. It’s an interesting wine, and one of distinct personality, which is a good thing. It has power and intensity, but also earthiness and perfume. I suspect it will improve over coming years. Notes from the producer....
The 2021 Original Vineyard spent 16 months in barrel and was bottled in late July. This wine comes from our 1988 planting. The 2021 is one of the very best wines from this vineyard. It is simultaneously deep and ethereal. There are mostly red fruits with a hint of darker berries. It is earthy, fresh and very finely layered. It is powerful for an Original Vineyard. The palate is fine, supple and full then tightens, fills the palate for a structured, fine and firm tannin finish. It should begin to drink near its best in another six years time and will drink well for 15 years after that. These wines have proved over three decades their ability to age and the 2021 has a long future ahead.

This is a very sentimental wine from our most elevated vineyard, planted in 2001, that pays tribute to my mother, Kaye. It's a vineyard with a stunning perspective over the other vineyards, the winery, house and to the forests and hills beyond. There are some lovely metaphors, no doubt. The site has a lot of quartz and mudstone, a smattering of volcanic soils that have eroded down from the volcanic plateau above, and produces a wine of fragrance, structure and complexity. The 2020 Kaye has weight and complexity beyond its vintage. It is typically spicy and shows lifted rose petal aromas with the usual savoury cherry edge. The palate has fine layers of creamy fruit depth and is driven by fine, gently chewy tannin and fresh acidity. It will begin to drink near its best in four years time and be in its best zone for a decade after that.

From a three acre vineyard that leans down a northerly slope. Of course quartz dots the site and everything is nurtured without chemicals. Natural ferment, sent to oak of which 25% is new. It’s possibly the first time I have really noticed oak in the ‘Original’ expressions of Bindi’s wines. Charming wine nonetheless.
Slick and sleek pinot noir that starts uppity but unfurls in this luxurious, lusty way. The perfume is dark cherry, bitter coffee, wet-fertile earth. The palate rolls long on rich, sweet rolls of dark cherry fruit character, but cedary-spice and a touch of savoury-clovey oak are laid relatively overtly over the sweet earth-dusted fruit. The wine finishes with a faint mushroom and red berry stain. Lovely but needs time to bring the oak to heel.

Sadly, Michael Dhillon had to do a cannonball run to the border come Sydney’s northern beaches going Covid fresh, so we missed our annual eat and drink and exploration of the wines, in person. Thankfully, kindly, Michael left me a set to play with…
That marriage of wood and fruit is so spot on. You know that thing when you smell clove, sandalwood, the fresh lathed wood, also, yes, cherry juice, pomegranate, kirsch and some stewed berries. Silky, sexy texture. Whoa. You know it. Seriously elegant, the word ‘poise’, persistence and refinement. Amazing expression.

Very even vines, the soils are variegated, but an even playing field for growing, with even berry size more or less even across the two acres. This is the yardstick, so to speak. Spending time with Michael Dhillon is a pretty great thing; insight and thoughtfulness the motif. It translates to the wines. Everything considered, more to strive for.
I like this dusty, savoury, stone and earth, undergrowth and briar character to sniff on. There’s red fruits, touch of black, but the elemental element is what draws you in. The palate shows some gentle sweet fruit, then the threads of tannin show you boundary and depth in the wine. It sits in a narrow pool in the palate and tightens. It’s sweet fruited yet has so much savoury-earthy structure, and, importantly an energy and drive across the palate. Pure class.

Higher, younger plots on the Bindi vineyard. Kaye continues the journey ’round the Bindi back garden. I feel less experienced with Kaye than other Bindi pinot noirs, this wine again proved hard to get a handle on. It feels quite distinctly lavished with oak, where the other pinots find that as seasoning or subdued. Scents are malty, fig and date enriched, show whiffs of stewed forest berry and a scant sprig or two of green herb and gum leaf. Flavours register more malt and dark chocolate, ripe and dried fruit, walnut and clove, though the texture feels supple up front and laden with a light web of fruit tannins, though the finish squeaks and creaks a bit under drying, woodier notes. A wine finding some maturity and depth, perhaps, and maybe in a phase that needs more benign decay than urgency to drink. Stay the course?

This is great pinot noir. Silky, satiny, sumptuous but bright, held in its sheath by tat-work of lacy tannins. A sense of purity, fresh fruit, gently sweet, a nibble of bright acidity and pleasing bitterness, cool flow, exceptional length and such a delightful, gentle flow of all this. It tastes refreshing, in a way, or gives off a sense of that feeling. Effortless and straight up delicious, with plenty of architecture, particularly in the sense of smooth rock and slate-like minerality embedded in the subtle fruit characters of the wine. This is pure class, pure feeling, wonderful drinking, sparks imagination and calls you back to the glass in pursuit of all these things. Or so I say. It’s a wine for lovers of fine things, no doubt, and delivers a top flight pinot experience.

The Original Vineyard has over its history become know for its signature perfumed bouquet and silky, pure palate. This relatively quartz riddled, gently north sloping three acre vineyard produces very fine, spicy, fragrant wine that has high natural acidity and develops beautifully given 6-10 years careful cellaring. As it ages the depth of aroma increases in and the palate becomes increasingly harmonious and is characterized by a sweet fruited, textured flourish.
Production typically varies from 300-450 dozen per vintage.

Semi translucent dark red colour with a slight tinge of black to the edges and a crimson hue. A youthful nose of crushed ripe cherries and strawberries gently laced with violets and hints of anise shows excellent intensity. Also evident are notions of fresh herbs and spicy cedar. Light to medium bodied the palate possesses delicious, juicy like, freshly crushed dark cherry and strawberry flavours over traces of anise, a subtle meatiness and spicy cedar. Supple mouthfeel finishing fresh with finely grained tannins and an aftertaste of vibrant red to dark fruits, a touch of anise, subtle meaty characters and spicy cedar.

Bindi’s Dixon Pinot Noir is sourced from two vineyard plantings, one in 1988 and the other in 2001. Fruit is fermented in open vats with only 5% whole bunch inclusion and maturation taking place over a period of 11 months in French oak barrels.

Elegant, polished and long this rates high on the deliciousness scale

Semi translucent bright red to dark red colour with a crimson red hue. Ascending from the glass are perfumed violet top notes with ripe red cherry and strawberry scents in hot pursuit. Aromatic fresh herb, forest floor and spicy cedar notes then flow on. Light with a vibrant and supple textural feel, a magnificent power wave of ripe red cherry, strawberry and a dash of sour cherry fruit caresses the palate. Subtle forest floor, fresh herb infusions and light spicy cedar nuances sit beneath. Superb intensity and purity of fruit yet very elegant and polished with beautifully integrated tannins combining with bright fresh acidity on the finish. A long delicious red fruited aftertaste draws you back in for more. An outstanding release from this iconic Macedon Ranges producer.

Semi translucent dark red colour with a light red hue. Very perfumed the nose sees violet, ripe red cherry and strawberry scents leading the way over faint traces of anise, forest floor and lightly spiced fresh herb notes. Light and vibrant yet intensely concentrated with a power wave of flavour that expands across the breadth of the palate like a peacock’s tail. Spicy red to dark cherries and ripe strawberries eloquently fill the mouth with complexing nuances of fresh herb infusions, lightly smoked cedar, forest floor and a subtle meatiness then chiming in. Bindi’s Dixon Pinot Noir is sourced from two vineyard plantings, one in 1988 and the other in 2001. Fruit is fermented in open vats, 100% de-stemmed and matured in French oak barrels of which 10-15% are new for a period of 11 months.
Excellent depth of colour with a dark red black tinged core and a purple red hue. Alluring violet aromatics lead the way with fragrant herb notes, red to dark cherry, plum and strawberry fruits in hot pursuit. A subtle whiff of forest floor and spice are also evident. Youthful and fresh the palate is flooded with a power wave of dark cherry, plum, ripe strawberry and subtle anise flavours which have an expansive feel. Infusions of fresh herbs, forest floor and light spicy cedar sit underneath. Texturally supple feel with bright fresh acidity energising the finish. A silky yet structural matrix of tannins provides a good framework. Long delicious aftertaste.

The Wine Formerly Known As Composition. I do like the personalisation of the wines, increasingly, from Bindi. Vigneron Michael Dhillon does few actions without meaning. It’s a mix of declassified Original and new K Block fruit. I tried all four (new) pinot noir releases blind, initially, and Dixon was very, very impressive. Indeed, when I showed the wines to others, this was the one drunk the most, even with Block 5 in the mix. It invites you into a sense of gusto.
It’s a forward and obvious wine but inviting and delicious. Chock full of dark cherry, kirsch, bay leaf and anise, layered with light clove and cedar character and feeling proud, full and generous. It sits on the palate with generosity but freshness, slick texture, a fresh, minerally, cool finish with a roll of chompy tannin. It feels prouder and bolder than most Bindi wines, but it finds easy communion with pleasure. Drink 2020-2030.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
