Bright red. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes candied red fruits, rhubarb and allspice, with musky herb and vanilla nuances building in the glass. Offers an array of red fruit flavors that put on weight and gain spiciness with air. A floral note comes up on the finish, which clings with impressive tenacity and focus. I suspect that this wine will age nicely on its balance. But the way, the 2003 version of this wine is drinking extremely well right now.

From the same parcel every year and a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache, the purple-hued 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Villages gives up a very young, juicy bouquet of blue fruits, violets, lavender, and pepper. This beauty packs ample fruit and offers terrific purity, full body, and supple, sweet tannins. It needs a year of bottle age but is a ripe, sexy wine. Drink 2018-2026.

The current vintage is the 2015 Côtes du Roussillon Villages and it's the same blend as the 2016, with 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache. This cuvee comes all from Gneiss (pronounced “nice”) soils, was completely destemmed and spent 18 months in concrete tanks. It’s a sensational 2015 that offers notes of blackcurrants, blackberries, chocolate, licorice and roasted herbs. Rich, full-bodied, unctuous and downright sexy, with moderate acidity and building tannin, drink this powerhouse beauty anytime over the coming 5-7 years or more. Drink 2017-2025.

The estate’s 2004 Camartina is another irresistibly sexy wine. A deeply-colored ruby, it displays captivating aromatics along with notes of blackberries, blueberries, violets and graphite that emerge on its medium-bodied frame. The fine tannins make it a highly enjoyable wine even at this early stage, but my experience suggests that another few years of bottle age are needed for the wine to integrate its oak and express its full range of aromas and flavors. It is a terrific effort from Querciabella. This blend of 50% Sangiovese, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and Syrah aged in 100% French oak (Allier, Nevers and Troncais) of which 80% was new. Drink 2012 to 2022.

Grown on foothills of the Andes Mountains at elevations of 3,000 to 5,000 feet, the intense sunlight, cool evening temperatures and mineral-rich irrigation from melted mountain snow translates to a rich wine with intense flavour characteristics.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a bright dark red black tinged hue. Scented liquorice and black cherry aromas are intermixed with hints of blueberry, incense infusions, scorched earth and spice following on. Surprisingly forward and opulent the palate is decked out with succulent black cherry, blueberry and liquorice flavours over incense infusions and spicy dried herbs. Supple round mouthfeel with velvety tannins and a medium to long aftertaste of black cherries, blueberries, liquorice, incense infusions and spicy dried herbs.

Too often we hear the words “No expense spared on viticulture and winemaking practices...The best people are employed and the best and sometimes very innovative practices are also employed.” An approach that many aspire to, but in reality, fall short of. This is also Alana Estate's credo, but in this case, the ambition is warranted and even fulfilled. Situated in Martinborough, New Zealand, Alana Estate came to our attention via a customer who was holidaying in the region. Mesmerized by their wines, he wanted to purchase some in Australia but Alana was not exporting. After several months of negotiation, the first direct shipment has arrived – bypassing the middle man thus making these wines highly affordable, given the extraordinary quality.

Alana Estate began when Ian and Alana Smart purchased 50 acres on the northern edge of the Martinborough Terrace in 1993. Planting of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling commenced shortly afterwards. The first vintage was in 1997. In Martinborough, the growing season is long, and dry in spring and summer with moderate day temperatures and cool nights. It is this diurnal temperature difference that contributes to the flavour profile of Alana's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Chris Archer (winemaker for Alana Estate) explains “...our wine philosophy starts as usual in the vineyard. Our first principle is that we treat all our plants as individual identities. We therefore in all our treatments such as pruning, fruit thinning, canopy training respect the subtle difference of each vine and respond with differing treatments available to promote the health and structure of the vine. This style of management will create a vineyard with greater complexity and sturdy vine health throughout the property. We then carry this attitude into the winery where we endeavour to identify significantly different parcels of fruit which we keep separate and make in a style that promotes the positive attributes of that specific parcel. Once these wines are blended, we take away the knowledge of what part of our vineyard is performing and contributing more than its weight in the blend. Vineyard areas that are under performing will be identified and focus of our attention will be drawn to the remedy. The final resulting wines from Alana should demonstrate a collage of subtle complexities which are a combination of terroir, climate of the growing season, viticulture and winemaking.”

The Alana winery is located within a few hundred feet of the vineyard which gives the winemakers the ability to rapidly deliver the hand picked fruit into 15kg bins, about the size of a wine box. (In many vineyards, these small bins are emptied into large ½ tonne bins which are then loaded onto a truck and driven to a nearby processing facility). At Alana, the need for double handling is eliminated. Instead, the winery is designed on a gravity flow system, (the 'Brothers in Arms' winery at Langhorne Creek is an Australian example designed on the same principles). The top floor is used for red fruit sorting and de-stemming as well as holding a small tank farm. The second floor contains the red fermentation vats, air bag press and laboratory. The bottom floor contains the oak maturation cellar together with the administration department and restaurant. One may ask why go to all the trouble to create a gravity fed winery? The top Pinot Noir producers will all say that by eliminating mechanical pumping the Pinot is not ’bruised’ in any way, thereby enhancing the quality of the final result.

A top New Zealand Pinot produced from a vineyard obsessed with excellence.

Tasting Note: The grape bunches for this wine were 100% de-stemmed and then gravity fed to the fermenter. Fermentation proceeded slowly with indigenous yeasts. The skins were plunged down into the fermenting juice several times a day to maximize colour extraction, tannin and flavour. Most batches were then allowed a period of extended maceration on skins. Pressing took place with the hard press juice returned to the free-run wine immediately, at which time it is transferred to French oak barriques. Maturation occured in 30% new oak, the balance being two and three year old barrels. A natural malolactic fermentation was completed in barrel the following spring. Sufficient maturation had occurred after twelve months in barrel. Medium body. Crimson mauve colour with crimson mauve hue. Lifted nose delivering strong varietal character. Perfumed with top note of strawberry jam, spice and violets followed by end notes leather and game. The palate delivers a superb flavour profile with explosive depth and length of flavour. Violet infusion, blackberry and spice are meshed over a very spicy background. Excellent varietal character with black and sour cherry back palate flavours and aftertaste.

Le Coup translates as “to strike” and represents Alana Estate’s challenge to the great wines of Burgundy. Only produced in exceptional vintages from a selection of the best barrels, it is Alana Estate’s ultimate expression of Pinot Noir. Total production for the 2006 Le Coup was limited to only 900 bottles.

The finest expression of Pinot Noir from Alana and a serious threat to Burgundy.

Superb top note of violet, followed by layers of ripe strawberry and spice. The powerhouse rolls out into a serious power wave. This is the essence of great Pinot Noir – power and elegance overlaid with velvet smooth tannins. Totally mouthfilling with strong flavours of dark cherry, anise and spice, overlaid with strong black pepper, spice and cherry aftertaste.

Fresh pear and peach flavours fill the mouth with a rounded feel underscored by lime, wet slate and gentle infusions of fresh herbs. Lively acidity lends energy and tension to an elegant aftertaste that has some orange tang to it.

2018 and 2019 are a return to cooler vintages in Rías Baixas, and I was able to compare the entry-level Albariño bottling from Albamar from both years, the youngest of which, the 2019 Albamar, had just been bottled. Here, they use purchased and own grapes, and it's produced in a fresh style. This is a little riper than 2018, which is sharper. Xurxo said this reminds him of the 2016 in the sense that this is ready and approachable. It has a vibrant saline finish. Despite its approachability, it should also last in bottle. Drink 2020-2024.

The 2016 Barbaresco Angelo, the estate's top bottling, is a blend of 50% Ronchi, 25% Montersino and 25% Loreto, done entirely in cask. Reticent at first, the 2016 needs several hours of air to start opening up. A super-classic expression of Nebbiolo follows, with hints of menthol, leather, iron, violet spice and licorice that develop later. The 2016 remains a wine of fascinating contrasts. It is at times light on its feet, while at other moments it comes across as much more powerful.

The 2016 Barbaresco Angelo is the most elaborate and oak-forward of the three Barbaresco expressions presented by Albino Rocca this year. The wine opens to dark color saturation with blackberry, dried fruit and plum. You get extra layers of spice, smoke, tar and tilled earth as well. The wine is robust and full-bodied. It deserves to sit next to a nice cut of steak on the grill.

Crystal-clear purity of fruit with everything ranging from rose petals to strawberries to dried cherries. Elegant and graceful, yet at the same time strong and strapping, this full-bodied Barbaresco zips with agile acidity through muscular tannins and deepness of flavor like a well-built athlete skating on ice.

The 2016 Barbaresco is a gorgeous entry-level wine in this range. Dark and fleshy, the 2016 offers terrific depth as well as plenty of character, which is great to see in its peer group. Black cherry, plum, mocha, leather, spice and licorice all meld together. One of the more open wines in the range, the Barbaresco will also give readers an idea of what to expect. This is an absolutely delicious wine in its peer group and price range. The straight Barbaresco is a blend from Meruzzano and young vine fruit from Ronchi.

Almaviva is the ambitious partnership of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild group (Bordeaux) and Viña Concha y Toro (Chile) with the intention of creating a wine of exceptional character, complexity and ageing potential from extraordinary Chilean terroir. Launched with the 1996 vintage, consistent vineyard improvements and meticulous winemaking today mark Almaviva as one of the finest wines produced in Chile.
For the second year running, we see the release of the second wine from Almaviva, named Epu. With a slightly higher Cabernet component in this wine the feel is more reminiscent of Bordeaux.

Lots of finely roasted sweet spice and roasted sesame to the blackberries, cassis and iron, together with hints of blue fruit and cured meat. A medium-to full-bodied palate, filled with rather generous sweet berries. Fleshy, supple and savory with quite fine-grained tannins and a long finish. First year with 10% new wood. 81% cabernet sauvignon, 12% carmenere, 5% merlot and 2% cabernet franc. Already delicious, but can hold, too.

The current release of their second wine is the 2020 Epu. It's selected from the same terroir and vineyard in Puente Alto, one of the most reputed places for Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile, but from the younger vines (five- to 20-year-old vines) and harvested a little earlier to preserve acidity and fruit. In the warm and dry 2020 vintage, the wine was produced with a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Carmenere, 5% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, usually higher in Cabernet and lower in Carmenere than Almaviva. It has red ripe berries, the textbook blackberries and cassis and some creamy oak. It's ripe at 14.8% alcohol and has mellow acidity, good freshness and balance, with a pH of 3.71 and 4.8 grams of acidity (tartaric). It matured for 12 months in French barriques, 10% new and 90% second use. The wine has a bright nose with a clean note of baked "morrón" peppers intermixed with red berry compote. It has a velvety plate with the luxurious texture of the modern Bordeaux, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It's approachable and round but should reward some time in bottle. This is a pretty serious Epu. 75,000 bottles produced. It was bottled at the end of 2021 and the first days of 2022. Drink: 2023 - 2030.

The first truly international release of the second wine is going to be the 2019 Epu, which has changed image and label, looking a little more like Almaviva, and is going to be sold through the Bordeaux négoce. 2019 was a very dry vintage, and the blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Carmenere, 2% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc with slightly higher alcohol than 2018 and with lower acidity, matured in used barriques for one year. In terms of freshness, the wine is quite similar to the 2018 that I tasted next to it, obviously a little younger, quite intense and fruit-driven, spicy and herbal, with a creamy texture and fine-grained tannins. It's a second wine, but they also want to do something different and Epu is perhaps a little more classical, perhaps this is more Bordeaux and Almaviva is more Chilean. 70,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2020 and January 2021. Drink 2021 - 2028.
