Japser Morris MW - Inside BurgundyDe Montille owns a magnificent 1.26-hectare parcel in Beaune Grèves just south of Bouchard's Baby Jesus, planted in iron and clay soils over sandy limestone. The vines delivered a complex, compelling wine in 2022: a ripe, plummy fruit with a savoury, gamey edge and a firm, saline undercurrent. Half of the grapes were fermented as whole clusters with a combination of punching down and pumping over. The structure is now supple and silky, yet enough tannin suggests that this will age well. Drink 2027-2055.

This is excellent and historically, is a wine that always ages well. Drink through 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru comes from two parcels is 90% whole cluster. Brambly red berry fruit is mingling with black pepper, clove and touches of undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with quite succulent tannins, more rondeur here than the other Volnays, plush and quite luxuriant wiht a sensual and very pure finish. Superb. Drink 2025-2048.

Neal Martin - VinousVery erratic rows here, I am told, so it is ploughed by horse. 13% alcohol, 3.65pH, one third whole cluster. I loved the bouquet of this wine which has ethereal qualities. Then, on the palate, I found it a little less concentrated than I was expecting. It will still be a delicious wine though, in the medium term.

After graduating his architecture degree, Eloi Durrbach set south aiming to make natural wines with a sense of place and ability to age with ease. Planting now comprises 15 hectares of red grapes, equal parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, plus 2 hectares of Marsanne and Roussanne. All grapes have been grown and treated organically since their planting.
Alpilles Rouge is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah, aged for 24 months in old foudre and barrels with a minimum amount of racking during this time. The grapes are not destemmed, and vinification occurs with natural yeasts and no sulphur. While this wine is generally opulent and indulgent in its youth, it famously rewards time in the cellar, beautifully evolving slowly over decades.

From a marginally cooler, damper year, the Syrah and Cabernet are already beginning to meld together. Tightly youthful and closed, this needs either advance decanting or be allowed to age for a few years. Fresh, vibrant notes of blue flowers and dark berry fruit on the nose opens out to concentrated, ripe blackberries, the vibrant kick of sloes and powerful, bitter black chocolate tannins, finishing with aromatic notes of black pepper and sweet allspice. Domaine de Vaccelli is one such winery, deserving of their reputation as one of the most exciting projects in the market today. Bottles of Vaccelli are now quickly finding their way on to Michelin star restaurant wine lists, and into the cellars of collectors around the globe. This tiny winery based in Cognocoli-Monticchi on the island of Corsica champions local varieties Sciaccarellu (red) and Vermentinu (white), elevating each to a level of refinement seen only in the greatest wines of the world.
Initially formed in the 1960's by Roger Courrèges, the estate is now run by his grandchildren Nathalie and Gérard Courrèges. Certified organic since 2008, all vineyard work is performed by hand, while only native yeast is used during vinification which occurs in stainless steel tanks. Wines are then aged in a combination of stainless steel, barrique, 600L demi-muids and concrete eggs.
As to the style of wines, Vermentinu, or Vermentino as it's more commonly spelt, is the most important white varietal on Corsica where it excels in the wind swept sea side hills. Often fragrant and delicately fruited, Vaccelli produces examples displaying vibrant minerality with a gentle spiciness and ample racy acidity. These are complex whites that speak clearly of their island home and are notable for their supreme detail and balance.
On the red side, Sciaccarellu is the dominant variety where it thrives in the dry soils of Corsica. Known as Mammolo in its home of Tuscany, here it produces wines pale in colour yet generous in fruit and spice, with the slightly elevated alcohol balanced by fresh acidity. You'd be forgiven for thinking these were high altitude Nebbiolo such as Gattinara, and drinkers of these northern Italian reds will find much to enjoy here.
The Vaccelli Rouge is a blend of two parcels of 25+ year old Sciaccarellu vines, one exposed east-west, and the other one north-south. Flavours range from dark plum and kirsch to blood orange and mint, framed by firm, al dente tannins. Light in body yet powerful in flavour, there's more than a passing resemblance to alto Piedmont Nebbiolo here, and would charm drinkers seeking an alternative to those northern Italian reds.

Vaccelli Rosé is 100% Sciaccarellu from vines averaging 30 years old and planted on slopes of sandy granitic soils. Pale onion skin in colour, juicy white strawberry and peach fruit abounds married to citrus peel and white florals. A gastronomic rosé with ageing potential of 6-8 years.

From 20-year-old Sciaccarellu vines on granite soils, the 2020 Ajaccio Rosé was matured for 19 months, including 11 months in wooden tanks and 600-liter barrels on the lees. It has a delicate, very fresh bouquet with aromas of spices, garrigue, lemon oil, iodine and candied orange. Medium to full-bodied, with a textural and silk structure, it’s built around bright acids and a lingering, salty finish. This vintage can be approached with pleasure even if it has 3-5 years of evolution ahead of it. Drink 2023-2030.

The color is beginning to evolve slightly, but it's the nose in particular that is absolutely fascinating. It evokes candied grapefruit, cranberries, and an exquisite note of kirsch. The texture on the palate is based on an almost perfect balance between power and finesse, with high-quality tannins. With superb length on the palate, this rosé oscillates between delicacy and vinosity. Drink over the next 3-4 years. Drink 2025-2029.

Once again there is plenty of floral influence present on the ripe and fresh nose of wild red and dark berries along with plenty of earth and humus nuances. There is excellent volume and richness to the powerful and sappy larger-scaled flavors that also possess a beguiling texture on the lingering and balanced finale that is less austere than usual. Even so, note well that this too is constructed to repay longer-term cellaring so at least some patience advised. Drink through 2035+.

The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite saline with a white and black pepper on the strict but quite compelling finish. Sophisticated, but it will need time. Drink 2027-2055.

The Savoie region is nestled within the French Alps, not far from Chambéry. Once one powerful wine region with 20,000 hectares planted on the complex slopes of the mountain, it's now a small region, totalling 3,000 hectares. Most of the vineyards have been replanted on the flat, where the machines can find their way but not the quality. A super-fresh if somewhat brooding nose is comprised by notes of essence of red pinot fruit, spice and lavender that really helped from being in a decanter for 30 minutes first. The succulent and reasonably concentrated medium weight flavors exude a subtle minerality before concluding in a compact, powerful, complex and impressively persistent finish. This seems to have put on weight since I last reviewed it and I like the overall sense of harmony and balance. In sum, this is evolving nicely though I underscore that it still needs at least another 5 or so years. In a word, lovely. Try from 2027+.

Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle. Drink 2023-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousDominique thinks this may be THE vintage of the recent past, even at 55 hl/ha. This view may be conditioned by having just lived through making the third hot dry vintage in a row. The 2017 may be a fraction lighter in colour, but it is really haunting in its fruit, superbly balanced, medium density, a crisp tannin or two right at the back and now here comes the fruit again. I see what Dominique means – certainly if you want to drink in the medium-term future.

Domaine du Pegau Reserve is produced from 85% Grenache, 9% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre, Counoise and other varieties. The grapes are not destemmed, and the natural yeast fermentation is completed in traditional, cement vats before ageing an average of 24 months in old foudres.
Midnight black dark red heart with a dark red hue. Heady aromas of black raspberry, black cherry liqueur and liquorice flood the nostrils complimented by some scorched earth, new leather, provincial herb and pepper notes. Boasting enormous levels of richness, power and concentration, the monumental palate is saturated with black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry liqueur like flavours. A firm robust tannin structure holds everything in place whilst notions of scorched earth, infusions of herbs du Provence, leather and peppered meats unwind across the back half. Incredibly dense and chiselled, it finishes exceptionally long and sumptuous with a firm grip.

Reminding me slightly of a more elegant, less concentrated example of the 2009, it has full-bodied richness, a broad, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's already hard to resist yet should evolve nicely for 15-20 years if well stored.

Enormously dense at the monumental finish. Not easy to find the right words for all this. The blend is identical to this producer’s Cuvee Reservee, but is matured much longer in cask and was bottled in February 2024. Drink or hold.

Sporting a deeper ruby/plum hue as well as incredible notes of red and black fruits, new saddle leather, herbes de Provence, licorice, and God knows what else, these all carry to a full-bodied, powerful, unctuous effort that has tons of richness, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It reminds me of a great vintage from the late Henri Bonneau. It's ready to go today, yet I see no reason it shouldn't evolve gracefully over the coming 15+ years or more. Drink 2024 - 2040.

Essentially, this is the same wine as the Cuvée Réservée, but instead of maturing it for two years, Laurence Féraud keeps it locked away for four, leading to more concentration, slightly elevated alcohol and a firmer tannic structure. Dry, slightly grippy finish. Excellent power and concentration with a long robust aftertaste.

Dark and exquisitely layered in the glass, the 2018 presents a dark, intense expression of Trousseau, and yet does so while maintaining the freshness and energy that is so typical of these wines. Black cherry, spice, leather, scorched earth and licorice are some of the many notes that give the 2018 its distinctive personality. As appealing as the wine is today, I would cellar it for a few years to allow the full breadth of its aromatics to develop. The Beranger is offered only in magnum. It won’t be easy to find but it is worth the hunt. What a special wine it is. Drink 2022 - 2030.

Antonio Galloni - VinousPreviously farmed by Jacques Puffeney, this parcel in Montigny-lès-Arsures, the ‘capital of Trousseau’, is now part of Domaine du Pélican. Puffeney used to call his wine ‘Les Bérangères’. The soil is made of alluvium and silt over grey marl, stony enough to allow good drainage. The vines are over 50 years old. South and south-west exposure and fairly low elevation (circa 300–330 m). Aged in 350-litre Burgundy barrels – no new oak. Not enough volume for a foudre. Bottled August 2019.
Mid crimson but the darkest of the 2018 Dom de Pélican reds. Seems to show a little more oak on the nose even though there is none new. Spicy and smells richer than the Pinot Noir and the Trois Cépages. Firmer, a little more tannic and yet almost luscious in the mouth. Smoothly chewy rather than silky. A little less refined yet more power. Drink 2023 - 2030.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (May 2022)Saturated ruby. Deep-pitched red/blue fruit liqueur aromas pick up suggestions of licorice, pipe tobacco and pungent flowers and herbs with air. In a lush, weighty style, offering expansive black raspberry, cherry cola, singed plum and fruitcake flavors sharpened by a jolt of spiciness on the back half. For all this wine's richness, it's energetic as well, showing solid, spice- and floral-driven persistence on the finish, which is framed by velvety, even tannins. Drink 2026-2036.

The final blend of the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau will include 60% to 65% Grenache, 15% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, with the remainder Cinsault. Boasting complex scents of roses, black tea, raspberries and cherries on the nose, it follows that up with a full-bodied palate that's silky and airy in texture yet flavorful and tremendously long on the finish. It fits perfectly with the Brunier's stated goal of pursuing elegance.

The vines average 50+ years and there’s a very restrained nose with dialed-back white-pear and chalk aromas with dried flowers, too. The palate has a super fresh, zippy feel and a long, juicy and attractive core of fresh, salty minerals. The balance is innate and very fluid.

jamessuckling.comThe flagship of this great estate is the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape and it could quite possibly be one of the longest lived wines in the 2018 vintage, which in general, is a charming, forward vintage geared for consumption in the first decade of life. Revealing a more ruby, almost translucent color as well as a great perfume of wild strawberries, blackberries, Asian spices, peppery garrigue, and flowers, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a building, undeniable sense of minerality, plenty of mid-palate depth, and enough tannins to warrant 2-3 years or bottle age. It has the more upfront, expressive style of the vintage yet my money is on this evolving for 15-20 years.

Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels (30% of which are new). Deep dark red black tinged colour with a vibrant red to dark red hue. Fragrant scents of violet, freshly crushed cherries and wild strawberries sail out of the glass trailed by some anise, fresh herb and blueberry spice notes. Light, juicy and fresh, the palate sports cherry and wild strawberry fruits over a delicate back drop of anise, fresh herb infusions, earth and spice. Bright acidity and polished tannins with a refined amply fruited conclusion.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Here too noticeable wood sets off the spicier still and even more floral-suffused aromas that are also comprised mostly of red and blue pinot fruit. The tender, round and delicious broad-shouldered flavors brim with dry extract on the even more persistent and beautifully well-balanced finale despite a hint of warmth. As is usually the case, the positively gorgeous 2020 Rodin is more refined than the regular cuvée though it is slightly more structured as well. If you can find it, don't pass it up. Drink: 2038+.

The mouthfeel of the large-scaled flavors is positively gorgeous with excellent richness, indeed opulence, that contrasts with the youthfully austere, complex and hugely long finish where a touch of warmth slowly emerges. This is also seriously impressive. Drink through 2037+.

There is a touch of sous-bois that become accentuated with time. The palate is fleshy and almost confit-like on the entry, but the acidity keeps this on an even keel. Plush, luxuriant...almost sexy (I dislike the word apropos Burgundy) but there is something very sensual about this wine. Very long in terms of length. Superb. Drink 2027-2055.

A slightly riper and exuberantly spicy nose is composed by notes of black cherry, dark raspberry, the sauvage and a whiff of earth. There is superb mid-palate density to the opulent yet serious big-bodied flavors that are shaped by a firm core of dense and very firm tannins on the hugely long yet impeccably well-balanced finish. This muscular effort is also going to need extended cellaring if you wish to see its full, and ample, potential realized.

Here too there is a mentholated top note to the much earthier aromas of poached plum, underbrush, red currant and touches of the sauvage. There is excellent verve to the equally broad-shouldered and muscular flavors that possess outstanding complexity on the tannic, serious and beautifully long finish that is a bit less austere than it usually is at this early juncture. This beautifully well-made effort will also require extended bottle age to reveal its full potential, but it should very much be worth the wait.

The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and harmonious on the entry. The fine, lightly spiced finish reveals clove and touches of graphite. Nice persistence here. This holds a lot of promise.

The 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is a blend of the original Faiveley parcel plus around 0.5 hectares gained through their acquisition of Dupont-Tisserandot. It has quite an intense bouquet of blackberry, briar and wild strawberry scents, coming across a little burly compared to the more nuanced Latricières-Chambertin. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, the palate perhaps showing more potential than the aromatics at the moment. There is very good weight here, fine mineralité and quite a precise, sustained finish. Give it five or six years in bottle.

Deep black dark red colour with a youthful looking bright red purple hue. Leaping from the glass are freshly crushed raspberry and red liquorice aromas followed by some graphite, earth and white pepper notes. Rich dark raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits carry a juicy feel underscored by vibrant acidity and a muscular tannin structure. Inky earth and blackpepper elements linger on the back half. The dryish, slightly grippy finish layered with lashings of succulent fruit.
Cellar 3-4 years.
