Graceful, yet rich and structured this is another beautifully crafted Pinot in the classic Ata Rangi style.

Sourced from the oldest parcels of fruit, the fabled Abel clone, allegedly smuggled from Burgundy in the mid 1970’s, makes up to 40% of the blend. Maturation took place in French oak (35% new) for a period of 11 months.

Very deep purple red colour with a tinge of black around the edges and a bright crimson purple hue. Intensely perfumed with scents of violets, ripe dark cherries, strawberries and anise jumping out of the glass followed by complexing nuances of dried meats, toasty cedar and spice. Rich and quite full the palate features mouthfilling flavours of spicy ripe dark cherries and strawberries laced with anise over some toasty oak, subtle meatiness and spice. Excellent concentration and power. The tannins provide an excellent framework possessing an underlying firmness and give the wine a bit of grip on the finish. Yet there’s an overall sense of suppleness due to the wealth of fruit. Long aftertaste of spicy ripe dark cherries, strawberries, toasty anise and some meatiness.
    Cellar 6-8 years.

Elegant, supple and very vibrant pinot noir, with seductively-layered floral, red rose, cherry, red fruits, dried herb and mixed spice flavours. Very long and linear wine that demonstrated real power delivered with great subtlety. A wonderfully pure pinot noir with a distinctive house/vineyard style and a proven ability to age graciously. Ripe, fragrant, stylish and satisfying, this is a serious and delectable pinot. The complex bouquet shows red/black cherry, truffle, dried herb and floral characters, which lead to a finely textured palate that delivers elegant power, as well as soothing mouthfeel, all beautifully wrapped in polished tannins. This has a strong Ata Rangi hallmark and stands very proud on its own. At its best: 2016 to 2024.

It was a cooler, wetter year as I recall, or certainly it was the couple of weeks I spent in Wellington and Martinborough in January that year.
Straight off, I like this vintage. It’s kind of cool and minty, but with a rosy perfume, smoky brown spices, and something like sarsaparilla over a typical red cherry base. Tight, gently sappy, savoury and autumnal, with a distinct earthy/mineral feel, a persistent fine rasp of kitten’s tongue tannin, and a long sweet tangy orange and spice laced finish, firm stroke of tannin carrying it on. Well sophisticated. Yes. Drink 2021-2032+

Bell Hill produce some of the rarest and most sought after wines in New Zealand. The foundation for this success is their vineyard site that was formerly an old lime quarry in the Weka Pass, North Canterbury. This is a unique site with limestone derived soils and north facing hillside exposures. The vineyard has been managed as organic and biodynamic since 2007, and it pays dividends delivering wines of immense aromatic complexity and taut structure, wrapped around a powerful core of fruit.

Their flagship Pinot Noir is a complete barrel selection from the entire vineyard, and displays excellent supportive structure surrounding the core of perfectly judged ripe fruit. Given their immaculate detail, and their slow evolution, the wines are often compared to Burgundy and can necessitate cellar time to show their best.

A very complex and expansive nose here with crushed roses, violets and baking spices on offer, as well as a core of such pristine red cherries and red plums. The toasty and spicy oak seems dialed back a little here, allowing beautiful fruit to take a lead role. The palate has such impressively polished shape and depth; it drives in sleek and central and then blooms wide and upwards at the finish, bathing the mouth in fresh, spiced red-cherry flavor. So focused and vibrant. Silky smooth tannins. Drink over the next decade or more.

From an extraordinary, close-planted site in north Canterbury that was formerly a lime quarry. All of this raised and reared by the wonderful Sherwyn Veldhuizen and Marcel Giesen. An amazing project and vision realised in amazing wines.
This has purity, shimmering beauty and tension writ large. It feels pretty and perfumed to sniff on, sour cherry, wild herbs, faint cedar and clove. Flavours mesh light and frisky, more of the sour cherry and wild herb, though there’s a distinct stony minerality that trails long through the wine’s epic length. Texture here is incredible. So much detail in the wine too. An outstanding wine.

Rarely is a Pinot Noir from Central Otago so supple, delicious and easy to drink as this little number. Cherry and squishy berries, dried herb and plenty of spice, a little fresh mint and rose perfume. Tannin is fleshy and plentiful, yet soft and gently mouth-coating. Finish is all spice and strawberry with a subtle meaty character, leaving emery board tannin in its wake. Love it. Great drinking now. Drink 2021 - 2024.

Burn Cottage Vineyard is a natural northeast-facing amphitheatre at the south end of the Pisa Range in the Cromwell Basin. Vines are planted to a density of 5000 vines/Ha, and have an average age of 11-13 years. The vineyard and property are biodynamically farmed.

For the 2016 vintage the ferment included 23% whole clusters and the wine was matured in French oak barrels, with 24% of the being new.

Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Perfumed aromatics of violets, ripe dark cherries, strawberries and anise blossom from the glass followed by hints of clove, toasty cedar, forest floor and spice. Light to medium weight the palate is flooded with spicy dark cherry and ripe strawberry flavours laced with dried clove, showing notable power. Also present are stalky forest floor like characters and spicy cedar. Supple mid palate feel yet possessing excellent acid structure and finely integrated tannins. Long elegant finish.

This is a terrific Pinot Noir - great to drink now despite the sneaking feeling it's going to get even better with bottle age. Totally seductive ripe cherry, berry and plum flavours with added complexity from subliminal floral, spice, savoury and herb. The texture is to die for and the wine has impressive power as evidenced by a lingering finish that won't quit.

Central Otago has its ups and downs, in terms of winemaking style, but Burn Cottage seems to regularly combine fine balance with high drinking appeal.
Fragrant and rosy, scrub herb, plum and cherry, spice and subtle oak. Medium bodied, great flavour, smooth feel, and a ‘settled’ character to it, supple fine-grained tannin, slightly earthy and malty in the finish. Delightful. So well done. Drink 2018-2026+

Thirty one percent whole bunch pressed and matured in French oak, 19% of which was new. Deep dark red colour, slightly cloudy, with a bright dark crimson hue. Very perfumed the nose offers up potent violet top notes which intermix with red and dark cherries, plum and strawberry over some infusions of incense, lightly toasted cedar and spicy herb notes. Intense flavours of red cherries and strawberries are laced with the slightest hint of sour cherries. Plum, subtle incense infusions and spicy cedar ensuing. Lively finish with velvet smooth tannins. Excellent power with a long savoury aftertaste of red cherries, plums, strawberries, subtle incense and spicy cedar.

Pinot from estate source and Mark II (Pisa) and Northburn (Northburn) sub-regions.
Fleshy, fuller figured Otago pinot expression, laden with ripe cherry fruits, sweet spice, some earthy-charry characters, and an orange-y acidity. While ostensibly ‘fruitier’ it’s also quite firmly in the amaro-Campari spectrum of pinot, hemmed with chalky tannins, driving with authority across the palate. Loaded with character/structure. Good, bold wine this. Drink 2018-2020.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Burn Cottage Vineyard is like a taste of Christmas with its decadent baking spices combining with plum fruit and pure black cherry. There's lovely clarity of fruit and an intense core of youthful fruit flavors within its mid-weight frame. The remaining angles are those of an awkward teenager rather than a shape that will last into adulthood. The abundant, chewy tannins are resolved and will continue to mellow with bottle age (or if served with roast duck), and in combination with fine acidity, they provide the packaging for this unadulterated wine. The finish lingers long, offering baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, along black cherry and mocha. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Aromatic and expressive, with notes of tarragon, sage and white pepper mingling with fresh and juicy raspberry, cherry and pomegranate. Clearly defined and focused, with firm tannins providing wonderful structure for the long, complex finish, where a note of dried lavender lingers. Drink now through 2030.

Cherries, flowers and sweet spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity. Round and creamy with a caressing texture and a fruity edge. Long finish. Fresh and very fine. Elegant is the word. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Burnt cottage is what happened to many English people, who held property in North Wales, back in the day. I remember that well, and also the day I missed an IRA bomb going off in Warrington town centre by about 5 minutes, back in the 90s. No joke. Exciting times!
Invariably one of the nuttiest, and nattiest feeling wines from Central Otago, and no change here. Cherry pie, almond paste, spice and aniseed, with a fresh thyme, rosemary and rose perfume. It’s fleshy, silty and nutty, a scorched hazelnut and chocolate flavour, soft acidity and fine silty tannin. The finish is all wheaty, spicy and plump with dried raspberry and cherry. Delightful. So at ease with itself. Drink 2022 - 2027+

A native of New Zealand PJ Charteris has over two decades of winemaking experience that includes stints with Lindemans, Penfolds, Paul Jaboulet in the Rhone and Adelsheim Vineyard in Oregon. But it was his 12 years at Brokenwood in the Hunter Valley where he earned his reputation as one of Australia’s leading winemakers. It was also here where PJ met his wife Christina and they realised their long held dream to establish their own wine label with the discovery of the Winter Vineyard, a top Pinot Noir site with the A-List address of Felton Road, Bannockburn in Central Otago. The first vintage was in 2008 but it wasn’t until 2011 when PJ decided to leave Brokenwood to give his full attention to Charteris. A blend of 2 vineyards, 75% Winter vineyard and 25% Hawkesbury vineyard the wine was matured in old French oak for 18 months.

Superb length & power are woven into a silky texture.

A 50-50 blend of fruit from Northburn and Bannockburn (Cloudy Bay leases a portion of the Calvert Vineyard), the 2015 Te Wahi Pinot Noir is a full-bodied, plummy wine. It shows some pretty florals on the nose, but the palate is chocolaty and rich, offering hints of cola and dark-skinned plums. It's powerful and plush, with a velvety texture and lingering finish, almost verging on Californian (Russian River Valley?) in style.
