2019 E. Pira (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Mosconi Magnum (1500ml)
    Piedmont, ITALY
    $580. 00
    Bottle
    $6960.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

The Boschis family purchased E.Pira & Figli in 1981, propelling the young Chiara into a role significantly different to that intended with her economics degree. The family were proprietors of Barolo’s historic Giacomo Borgogno estate, where Chiara originally learnt her winemaking skills. Her philosophy is to craft wines that marry the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability and the Pira wines are all about elegance, great aromatics and lush textures. This has been achieved through strict vineyard management, careful selection and impeccable vinification techniques. In her vineyards, Chiara has always worked without chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides and the wines have been certified organic since the 2014 vintage.

With fruit from Monforte d'Alba, the E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2019 Barolo Mosconi is the most powerful of the three wines presented here. We tasted it last. Bottled on the full August moon, the wine is impeccably balanced and bright with dark fruit, black cherry, spice and pencil shaving. The tannic structure of the wine is impressive, and you can count on Mosconi for long aging potential. Drink: 2025-2050.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Aug 2023)

The 2019 Barolo Mosconi is the most potent of the three Barolos in the range. It exudes Monforte darkness and virile intensity from the very first taste. Black cherry, plum, mocha, sage, tar, lavender and spice infuse the 2019 with tons of character. This is one of the most elegant wines I have ever tasted from Mosconi, a site that does not naturally lend itself to finesse. Drink: 2027-2044.

Lots of spices and earth with dark berries on the nose. Full-bodied with fine and silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish with blackberries and cinnamon. Racy and silky texture at the finish. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2026 but already a joy to taste.

2002 Elderton Command Shiraz Methuselah (6000ml)
    Barossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA

    $18000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14.5%

Transports table theatre into the sixth dimension. One Methuselah only to sell of this monster sized Command from a classic vintage!

Since its first release in 1984, Elderton Command has established a reputation as one of Australia’s most sought after shiraz. Previous vintages have received numerous accolades including the trophy for the best Shiraz in the world at the London International Wine and Spirit Competition. The wine has also consistently received lavish praise from influential US critics Robert Parker & Wine Spectator Magazine.

Sourced from vines planted in the early 1900’s, 2002 was a dream year viticulturally, with mild summer temperatures being greeted with a very dry and mild Autumn, ensuring long hang times, great baume’s and amazing natural acidity.

The wine was matured in a combination of American & French oak for a period of 3 years (starting off in new American & new French oak puncheons and then transferred into older oak after about one year). It is then given a further 12 months bottle age before release.

A magnificent Elderton Command.  Opaque, deep crimson colour with deep crimson hue.  Perfumed top notes of violets and vanilla followed by spice, confectionary and blackberry.  The palate is mouthfilling, with ‘joosy’ flavours of spice and white pepper followed by overlays of vanilla, confectionary, plum and spice.  Velvet smooth tannins.  Aftertaste of vanilla, spice, dark chocolate and confectionary.
    Cellar: 4-5 years (2010-2011)
    Alc/Vol: 14.5%

Other reviews…. Elderton’s flagship cuvee, the awesome 2002 Command Shiraz, is a classically Australian, bigger than life, extroverted, flamboyant effort boasting huge notes of smoky oak, new saddle leather, roasted meats, blackberry liqueur, and creme de cassis. It is an enormously chewy, unctuously textured Shiraz that should age for 10-15 years.
94-96 pointsRobert Parker, Wine Advocate #161 (Oct 2005)

...A stunning effort, the 2002 Shiraz Command exhibits an inky/blue/purple colour as well as a sweet perfume of camphor, blueberries, blackberries, acacia flowers, and smoky, toasty oak. Full-bodied, opulent, and viscous, with huge, but sweet tannin, decent acidity, and a muscular, long, 40+ second finish, this is a classic, potentially long-lived, Barossa blockbuster. It’s accessible now, but ideally needs another 2-4 years of bottle age, and should keep for two decades. 95 points

Bottled in 2013. Outstanding inky black purple colour with very deep black purple hue that stains the sides of the glass. Nosing results in an intense aromatic sniff of liquorice allsorts, morello cherry and blackberry infused with beautifully integrated fine brandy spirit followed by some vanilla, raisins and spice. Thick, luscious and ultra rich flavours of liquorice, blackberries and morello cherries fully encompass every crevasse of the palate followed by some fine old brandy spirit, subtle raisins and spice. Dry finish. The wines outstanding power and concentration are perfectly counterpointed by firm seemingly assertive tannins that provide some grip yet are obscured by the Port's overwhelming richness and density. Exceptionally long liquorice, blackberry, morello cherry, raisins, fine brandy spirit and spice aftertaste.

Inky ruby. Ripe and explosively aromatic, with vibrant blackberry and creme de cassis aromas tinged by vanilla, baking spices, licorice and sweet mocha. Lush, fleshy and powerful, the dark berry flavors showing liqueur-like intensity but also very good energy and brightness. Expansive, fruit-driven and long on the aftertaste, with supple, rounded tannins providing structure.

The 1998 Shiraz Reserve has the most potential of this trio. It combines some of the mature elements of the 1997 with the massive richness of the 1996, but without the 1996's slightly rustic framework. A dense purple color is followed by a sensational bouquet of creme de cassis, charcoal, and incense. Full-bodied, opulent, and voluptuously-textured, this is a big, but incredibly well-balanced wine. Its fruit bomb-like personality of a decade ago has morphed into something far more civilized, delineated, and refined. This gorgeous offering is a superb example of McLaren Vale Shiraz. Enjoy it over the next 10-15+ years.

Pale medium red. Penetrating aromas of sweet blonde tobacco, red cherry, crystallized raspberry, vanilla and black pepper. Elegant full and rich on the palate, with a touch of youthfully chewy oak that will need a few years to resolve fully, but there’s so much fruit crammed into every glass here that I have no doubt this will develop very nicely. A beautiful Brunello that closes long, dense and suave, this is another winner of the 2019 vintage. Drinking window: 2029-2042.

A powerful wine. An attractive floral nose but the real allure is a meaty, aniseedy, smoky dryness, giving the wine a beautiful sense of movement through the mouth – so that there’s a burst of flavour on the finish. Lots of tannin, black cherried weight, and ripeness.

Tasted under both cork and screwcap seal at a retrospective of Giaconda wines held in early 2017.
Smoked meats. Tangy fruits. Smoky, sinewy tannins. Screwcap seems far more cohesive than the cork-sealed. One of those ‘this is why we cellar reds’ wines. No need to say much more. At its peak.

Made mainly from WA's Gingin clone and planted in Gruyere on the same grey clay as Applejack. Whole bunches pressed into French puncheons with 20% new oak. Smells tightly wound and concentrated with aromas of ripe peach and nectarine, together with just a hint of lanolin and apple custard. Equally powerful and punchy on the palate. This has more of everything, including sprightly acid and some phenolic grip on the very long, stone-fruit pithy finish. Today, this is my pick of the 4 single-vineyard 2021 chardonnays, but who knows what will come out on top in 5 or even 10 years from now! Drink by 2028.

Philip Rich - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (February 2022)

This is made with fruit from the Sexton Vineyard, at 200 meters in altitude (80 meters higher than Tarraford). Within the vineyard, the clones are dominated by Gingin (brought over to Victoria by Phil Sexton), followed by Dijon clones, planted in the 1990s. The 2021 Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay is composed of 60% Gingin. Twenty percent of the parcels went through malolactic fermentation—clone 277 and some of the 96. This is salty as anything—a very good thing in my book—and the sheer intensity of flavor in the mouth is mouthwatering. Preserved lemon and grapefruit pith lace the edges of the mid-palate. Very smart—it has the Yarra precision of acid and streamlined phenolics, but it brings concentration of flavor and thrilling phenolics. Super smart wine. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (June 2022)

This seemed ultra-reserved in the context of the Tarraford, which I’d tasted immediately prior.
Citrus here and red apple, with pear, the citrus both pure juice and preserved. Oak spice, and custard powder characters, are so well threaded, ginger nut/biscuit aspects rising through the finish. World apart from the Tarraford; perfect pigeon pair. The longer it sat in the glass the more those complex, juicy, apple-like characters blossomed, marzipan with them, nectarines squeezed with salted lemons. This is a wine of tight, complex power, the fruit pure and commanding, the finish taut but persistent. Drink 2024 - 2030+

Complete nose with both minerals and citrus notes plus a hint of apple blossom. Still quite youthful but very promising. Markedly persistent with marked acidity but no shortage of fruit. Not austere but very far from fat. Neat and quite delicate. Fans out on the finish. They must be very pleased with this wine, from a hugely successful vintage. Drink 2022 – 2028.

Named after the Applejack eucalypts that surround the vineyard, which was planted at Gladysdale in 1997. Seven clones including 114, 115, MV6, D2V5, D5V15, Pommard and Abel! I've long considered the Applejack vineyard to be one of the greatest sites for pinot in Australia and I'm not sure I've seen a better version than the 2021. A deep, bright, crimson purple. Maraschino cherry into plum, there's an exotic and riotous amalgam of Asian five-spice and a gentle savoury, umami character. What elevates this vintage is the concentration, along with Applejack's trademark perfume and spice. Just so vibrant and fresh on the palate, the tannins are both silky and plentiful. You will have no problems opening and enjoying this now, but the wine's track record suggests you'll thank me if you still have some to drink 7–10 years from now, if not longer. Drink by 2032.

Brashly spicy and complex, this has aromas of espresso, blueberries, toasted spices and grilled bread, as well as forest wood and violets. The Applejack Vineyard is planted across the hill, at the same altitude as the Primavera Vineyard on gray clay over mudstone, and picked within a few days of that site. The 2021 Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir included 50% whole bunch in the mix and is a blend of seven different clones. This shows wonderful clarity and poise—it is precise and layered with energy and life. The acid pulses through the phenolic texture in the mouth. It was originally a sparkling vineyard, down the hill from Wombat Creek, situated in an eastern-facing bowl that captures the morning sunlight. Mel Chester (head of winemaking and viticulture) talks about the smell of the tea trees in the vineyard, explaining that "there's always a couple of Wedgetail eagles circling, it's a magic place." The evocative description of the vineyard carries through into the wine, which shows a satisfying, delicious resolution of plump ripe fruit and beautifully resolved tannin. Balance 101. Drink 2022 - 2037.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (June 2022)

One of the great things about Australian wine is that the planting frenzy in the late half of the 1990s now has a great many vineyards marking their 25th year in the ground. The east-facing Applejack Vineyard was planted in 1997 at Gladysdale and is a star performer. This release saw 80% whole bunches and 25% new oak.
Pure red cherry flavours push straight into undergrowth, mushroom, fragrant herb and spices. Cedarwood oak is present but so happily married to the fruit. There are briar notes here, particularly through the finish, and throughout it feels structured without necessarily feeling grippy. There’s a (positive) smoky aftertaste and a (very) good level of richness, in a varietal context. All up, hands down, this is a gorgeous wine to drink. Drink 2023 - 2030+

Pale garnet verging on ruby. Pale rim. A bit more meaty and savoury than the Primavera Vineyard Pinot on the nose. Light and fresh with definite sweetness, as well as the vegy savour, but more refreshing than the Primavera and with a nice lick of light tannins. Delicate texture. It tastes as though it were made with kid gloves. A definite success. Drink 2022 – 2028.

It should drink well for a minimum of 10-15 years.

A powerhouse of Shiraz. Again, like the Godolphin, this wine is unfiltered. Opaque black purple colour with black purple hue. Perfumed nose, with layers of violet, spice, liquorice and vanilla. The palate flavours are very pronounced, with a very spicy back palate. Mouthfilling flavours of black pepper, blackberry, spice, and plum overlaid with cedar. The tannins are fine, yet slightly chalky but perfectly balanced. Very long aftertaste of black pepper, spice and plum. Cellar 5-8 years (2011-2014) Alc/Vol: 14.5%

Other Reviews…. The profound 2005 Shiraz Amon Ra is fashioned from a dry grown, 100- to 110 year-old vineyard, and spends 14 months in a combination of 100% new French and American barrels as well as 300-liter hogsheads. A saturated purple color is followed by scents of creme de cassis, incense, licorice, black raspberries, graphite, and sweet wood. It unfolds beautifully on the palate to reveal terrific richness, full-bodied power, great definition, and lovely elegance. This exquisite Shiraz is still young, but it possesses a degree of accessibility. It should age for two decades. It is a superb example of cutting edge winemaking being utilized on ancient Shiraz vines in the Barossa.

Amon' and 'Ra' were two deities rolled into one to become the Sun God of ancient Egyptian mythology. With this release Ben Glaetzer has created a wine of mythic proportions. Sunshine and old Barossa vines transform fruit into an epic Australian red that's a must for Shiraz devotees.

This an extra large format bottling of the new version of the classic 10 year old expression that has made the distillery one of Scotland's biggest selling and most famous. Elegant swan necked stills, the tallest in Scotland, produce Glenmorangie whisky which is coaxed into perfect maturation through the use of oak bourbon casks, settled in traditional stone warehouses. After ten years the whisky reaches a perfect harmony of sweetness and complexity that is the signature of Glenmorangie Original: Velvet textured with delicate, honeyed overtones and a burst of citrus softening into vanilla and almonds.

The 2003 Shiraz Reserve, which I assume is made from the richest barrels, has all the same characteristics of the regular bottling, with more weight, opulence, and persistence. The 16% alcohol is beautifully concealed by its prodigious concentration. Readers who love the extroverted personalities of these wild and crazy Australian reds should drink it over the next 10-12 years.

From the same team (growers Kim and Mark Longbottom and winemaker Kim Johnston) that runs Henry’s Drive, this wine is made in a similar style. Produced from 6- to 12-year-old vines, it is a blend of 70% Shiraz and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% American oak, of which 80% is new. It is an in-your-face, exuberant, flamboyant Aussie red boasting loads of espresso roast, toasty oak, blackberries, cassis, and licorice. Full-bodied, opulent, and voluptuous, with oodles of glycerin and depth, this hussy requires drinking during its first 7-8 years of life, although it may last even longer.

The 2006 Gregor Shiraz is made from fruit dried on trays in the style of Amarone. More deeply colored than the above two wines, it has a liqueur, Port-like character to its aromas and flavors although it is dry. 100% Chardonnay Champagne from the Laherte family's chalkiest soils in Chavot and Épernay. These vineyards are all biodynamically farmed and are not only rich in chalk and chalky clay (marl) but there is also flint and schist. It has been aged for just over two years in bottle following a first fermentation in barrique, foudre and tronconique cask. No dosage. A creamy white mousse sits gracefully above a pale straw coloured base that’s finely threaded by a very persistent bead. Pronounced pear and citrus aromas stand out from the glass with baked bread and yeast lees characters then taking over. Finishes off with some lightly honeyed toast notes. Sculptured mouthfeel with energetic acidity racing through the elegant yeast lees, toast and citrus flavours. Some light brioche and almond nuances are also evident. Finishes bone dry, tense and crisp with a refined citrus, oily toast, yeast lees and chalk tinged aftertaste.

In this edition, the Brut Nature is decidedly powerful and broad, with less of the tension seen in some previous releases. It's as if all the Chardonnay flavors have been turned up to the maximum. Orange peel, apricot, chamomile and spice are some of the many notes that fill out the layers. The current release is based on 2017, with reserve wines from 2016 and 2015, all done in neutral oak. Aged for 12 months in barrique plus a further 12 months in larger botte, this Vignarionda is pretty classic. The concentration of fruit is great: generous yet elegant cherry and strawberry fruit are accompanied by a straw note, while the liquorice finish shows youthful grainy tannins, refined and sweet, along with refreshing acidity. It balances the strength of Serralunga with great finesse and is an absolutely beautiful wine from Luigi Pira. Drink 2025-2045.

    Maidenii Dry Unfiltered Vermouth (1500ml)
    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 19%
A new limited edition large format Maidenii - this time bottled without filtration for extra flavour. Along with Maidenii’s heroes strawberry gum, sea parsley, river mint and wattleseed, this also includes kaffir lime leaf, nigella and Japanese gentian.

Tasting note: Very pale, cloudy green, cider-like appearance. Lifted and fresh aromas of grapefruit, semi-ripe strawberry, tarragon, sage and bitter herbs. Light and racy in the mouth with flavours of fresh-cut grapefruit, lemon peel and delicate gentian bittererness; Finish is bone dry, with lingering grapefruit freshness. 19% Alc./Vol.
Malfy G.Q.D.I. Con Limone Gin (1750ml)
    ITALY
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 41%
A super sized collector's bottling produced by the Vergano family on the Amalfi Coast in Italy's east, a region known for its food and citrus - in particular, lemons - hence the label statement "Con Limone". Not surprisingly, this is not your typical London Dry. Expect a contemporary, lemon-heavy style.

Other reviews... Tasted neat, the lemon is overwhelming and bordering on a sherberty limoncello. That said, add water or more importantly – vermouth / tonic / mixer and the core gin botanicals (juniper, coriander seed) come back into contention. Malfy Gin was always going to be a lemon forward gin – Con Limone – kind of gives that away… but there is a gin under there and while progressive, it would still appeal to any classic gin fans. The finish has a lovely depth too, with more piney wood-floor notes coming through. 41% Alc./Vol. - www.ginfoundry.com

Retasted 01/12/2010: The colour of this wine is holding up well displaying an opaque black dark red colour with deep dark red verging on brick red hue. The nose displays a perfumed profile of cedar, blackcurrant and spice followed by a new leather and cigar box end note. Full bodied and still possessing plenty of richness the palate displays flavours of ripe blackcurrant, cedar and spice with some cigar box and leather on the back palate. Dry finish with very fine grained perfectly integrated tannins and long aftertaste of blackcurrant, cedar, spice and cigar box. A top example of aged McLaren Vale Cabernet that will continue to drink at it’s peak over the next 2-3 years.
    Alc 14.5%

    Other Reviews....
This winery does a superb job with Cabernet Sauvignon, which is aged in both new and old French oak. The dark ruby/purple-colored 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Lime Cave exhibits a sweet perfume of creme de cassis, spice box, vanilla, and menthol, well-integrated acidity and tannin, and a pure, well-delineated, nicely textured finish. It is nearly impossible to find California Cabernet Sauvignon of this quality at such a price. This is an impressive as well as realistically priced offering
