Many experts consider Chateau Haut Bergeron to be the best of the non classified Sauternes. Part of the secret of the success of Robert Lamothes and his sons Patrick and Herue is the terroir. The 28 hectare vineyard is split on such a way, that part of the vines are in Barsac, (next to Chateau Climens), part are at Preignac and a large slice next to Chateau d’Yquem. At one stage the label used to boast this fact, with the words 'CONTIGU d’YQUEM'. Son, Herue is a dedicated and passionate winemaker who ages wine in 25% to 50% new oak casks. The exact percentage depends upon the vintage conditions. The 2020 vintage comes replete with special packaging to celebrate 200 years of the Lamothe family being vignerons.
Brilliant pale gold core with golden tinged edges. Potent honey drenched ripe peach and apricot aromas mix with marmalade, dried pineapple and spice notes. Rich and lusciously textured, the palate features honeyed peach and apricot flavours alongside sweet ripe pineapple, marmalade and candied citrus characters. Outstanding power and depth finishing very long with ample freshness and mouth feel.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
    Alc. 13.5%

    Other Reviews…..
Pale gold in color, the 2020 Haut-Bergeron has a seductive nose of honey-drizzled peaches, baked pineapple and candied ginger, plus hints of coriander seed and candle wax. The palate delivers with tropical fruit and citrusy goods with a racy backbone and earthy accents, finishing with a compelling burst of freshness. Drink 2024-2040.

The 2020 Haut-Bergeron is a very pretty, alluring Sauternes. It offers up hints of orange marmalade, apricot, passionfruit and lightly burnt sugar, with no hard edges and fine balance. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2020 Haut-Bergeron, which incidentally comes with a special label to celebrate its bicentenary, has a very pure and perfumed nose with dried honey, white peach, saffron and Japanese yuzu. Impressive delineation. The palate is well-balanced with impactful concentration, pretty spicy with stem ginger and lemongrass. Very fine. Drink 2024-2040.

Bright golden straw colour with a pale straw hue. A shade more restrained than both the 2018 and 2019 vintages, the nose opens up to reveal peach, citrus and apricot aromas which have a honeyed overlay. Also making an appearance are hints of marmalade and spice. The most elegant of the trio, coating the palate are fresh apricot and peach fruits which sit over a honeyed citrus back drop. Some pineapple, lemon and spice characters linger on the back half which is enlivened by fresh acidity. Long, luscious conclusion.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

The 2017 Haut-Bergeron is gorgeous. Apricot, honey, orange confit, crême brulée, wild flowers and mint are all beautifully delineated in this striking, racy, opulent Sauternes. In the glass, the 2017 is beautifully textured and lush, yet it retains terrific freshness to balance things out. This Haut-Bergeron shows a more exotic, burnished flavor profile than many other wines. Drink it over the next decade or so. Drink 2022-2032.

Brilliant straw colour with golden tinged edges. Distinct honeyed botrytis affected scents of peach and apricot waft out of the glass mixing with dried pineapple and hints of spicy citrus along the way. Decadently rich and sweet with a thick viscous texture, flavours of honey, peach and apricot show terrific intensity with honeycomb, pineapple and delicate spice also chiming in. Nicely balanced acidity, the long honeyed aftertaste finishing with traces of toffee apple like characters.

Pale lemon-gold colored, the 2019 Haut-Bergeron struts out of the glass with a serious nose of peach preserves, wild fungi, lime cordial and dried pineapple plus wafts of allspice and fresh hay. The palate delivers surprising energy and freshness, lifting all of those ripe, rich stone fruit preserves and honeyed flavors on the long, decadently spicy finish. Drink 2024-2038.

The 2019 Haut-Bergeron has a very attractive bouquet of dried honey, muscat and barley sugar aromas, almost Barsac-like in style. The palate is very well balanced with good depth and fine acidity. Intense on the finish, but citrus-fresh satsumas and grapefruit lend poise. Excellent. Drink 2025-2040.

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc from the satellite Saint-Emilion commune of Lussac on Bordeaux's right bank. From vines with an average age of 45 years old this wine sees no oak and is aged in concrete tanks for a period of 12 months.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Lifted red to black currant aromas mix with hints of red liquorice, earth, black olive and spice. Mid weighted, nicely fleshed and possessing good richness, a mix of red to black currant and liquorice fruits are featured over an earth, dried herb, spice and faint leather back drop. Nicely integrated fine grained tannins. The savoury finish showing good depth.

I loved the nose on the 2018 Château Jamard Belcour, including its classic Right Bank red and black fruits, chalky minerality, chocolate, and cedar pencil aromatics. These carry to a medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant, seamless red that shines on all accounts. I'd be thrilled with a bottle on the dinner table, and while it's drinking great today, I see no reason it shouldn't keep for at least 7-8 years. Drink 2022-2030.

The 2022 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc was cropped at 18hL/ha between 24 August and 1 September, aged in 50% new oak. Pressed dried flowers on the nose, scents of dandelion and yellow plum, a touch of fennel coming through with time. The palate is well balanced with a pithy opening, nutty and smoky in style, good depth with that nutty finish offering noticeable salinity. Very fine. Drink 2027-2050.

Up with the crème de la crème, the 2022 Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc is based on 76% Sauvignon Blanc and 24% Sémillon, all of which is still aging in 50% new French oak. It has an incredible bouquet of honeyed citrus, grapefruit, and flowers to go with medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It’s concentrated, has a great texture, nicely integrated acidity, and a brilliant finish. Yields here were a miniscule 18 hectoliters per hectare, and the Grand Vin is a selection of only 44% of the total production.

Herbal and aromatic on the nose, expressive and engaging. Full, round and energetic, a lovely frame and texture to this, lovely licks of lemon, grapefruit, pear, apricot, some bitter lemon rind giving accents and a gorgeous persistence, not so vibrant, but there's underlying acidity that keeps the lift and it's so well controlled and confident. Really feels very precise and delineated, polished and structured, still with some spice giving some tension but this is really lovely. Complete and characterful. A yield of 18hl/ha. Drink 2023 - 2030.

Flowers, white chocolate, pineapple, spice, papaya, white peach, and orange scents are easy to pick up on the nose. On the palate, the wine is fresh, sweet, and fruity leaving you with creamy yellow citrus, grapefruit and white peach notes. The wine blends 76% Sauvignon Blanc with 24% Semillon. The harvest took place August 24 - September 1. 14.56% ABV, pH3.29. Drink from 2025-2032.

2022 Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Pre-Arrival Offer
    Pauillac, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $530. 00
    Bottle
    $6360.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is the sister property to Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron, formed upon the death of Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville in 1850. The parcel of vines we now know as Pichon Lalande were passed to the Baron’s three daughters, and today is one of the most elegant wines in the Haut Medoc. This elegance should not be confused with being underweight, as the wines have enormous richness and intensity, and age extremely well.

Plantings on the large property include a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one wine where a comparison with this estate's magical 1982 doesn't appear to be far-fetched. Wafting from the glass with deep aromas of cassis, plums, violets, rose petals, tobacco leaf and pencil shavings, it's full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with a layered, seamless core of fruit that largely conceals its chassis of powdery structuring tannin. Concluding with a long, expansive and beautifully perfumed finish, it's a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that has the potential to equal or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages at this address. It checks in at a very classical 13.6% alcohol and a rather high pH of 3.80.
    97-99 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

The 2022 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is magnificent. In recent years, Estate Director Nicolas Glumineau has pushed Pichon Comtesse to the limit. Maybe even a bit too far. But the 2022 is in the end a super-classic wine that emphasizes mid-weight structure, aromatic presence and persistence more than size. Sweet floral, savory and mineral accents run through a core of ripe, racy red-toned fruit. All the elements are so well balanced. Tasted four times. Drink 2032-2062.

The 2022 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande was picked 6 to 27 September at 30hL/ha, the drought chipping away so that one-third was eventually lost. This has 13.65% alcohol and pH of 3.80. There is 17.5% pressed wine, the highest ever. This has a subtle bouquet, not understated but it unfurls in the glass (unlike others that explode.) Blackberry and cedar, light touches of mint, a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety texture with lovely balanced, gentle but insistent grip, slightly granular as it fans out with black fruit, cedar and light graphite notes. This is a very suave Pichon-Lalande that will age with style. Drink 2029-2065.

I love the aromatics here with botanicals as well as currants, blackberries and oranges. Full-bodied with incredible tannins that build on the palate with finesse and focus. One of the gems from Pauillac is unquestionably the 2022 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande, which is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. A hypothetical blend of the 2019 and 2020, it's a full-bodied, concentrated, opulent Comtesse offering beautiful blue fruits, some chocolate, leafy herbs, and undeniable minerality, ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish. Despite the higher Cabernet Sauvignon component, this stays silky, expansive, and incredibly sexy. It's going to be drinkable with just 4-5 years of bottle age but should have a lengthy drink window. Hats off to director Nicolas Glumineau for another legendary wine from this château.

One of my favourite wines from 2022, utterly seductive from the first sip, this is a stunning effort that shows the power of Pauillac in 2022 delivered with elegance and class. Heavily scented on the nose, full of dark fruits, savoury notes of salty chocolate and floral scents. Smooth and so appealing in the mouth, the texture stands out, deep and rich but soft and chalky, tannins have a subtle powderiness that spreads the mouth, cooling and refreshing giving the minerality while the cool black and blue fruits linger in layers expanding vertically. This is so refined and polished - it's serious no doubt, not super fun, but it doesn’t need to be, it’s rich and sumptuous with sweet blue fruits balanced by high acidity that keeps the focus and energy. Bright, bold, well worked, clean, crystalline and pure. Somehow delicate and punchy at the same time. A mind-blowing wine that you just have to marvel at with intensity, brightness and vibrancy, building as it goes. A long, clean finish leaves you wanting more, salivating for that next sip. 3.8pH. A potential 100-point wine. 3.8pH. 50% grand vin. Tasted twice. Drink 2030 - 2050.

    Georgina Hindle - Decanter

With an inky, dark, garnet hue, the wine asks for a bit of coaxing before its leather, cedar, spice, flowers, truffle, mint, currants and dark cherries show in the perfume. The wine is pure silk on the palate. There are no edges or corners. Everything feels in place. It is completely seamless. The wine is pure, fresh, and expansive. The mid-palate picks up its currants and plums, while the finish holds them in place, and expands in all 4 directions, with perfect balance in its 60-second plus finish. This is the best vintage of Pichon Comtesse ever produced! If you have the extra money, this is the wine to buy as it will provide dividends for decades as it ages and evolves. The wine blends 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. 13.65% ABV, 3.80 pH. The harvest took place September 6 - September 27. Yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare. Only 50% of the harvest goes into the Grand Vin. Drink from 2027-2065.

Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Rol Valentin has a drop-dead gorgeous perfume of violets, dark chocolate and star anise over a core of wild blueberries, black cherries and preserved plums, plus a hint of Sichuan pepper. The medium to full-bodied palate is seductively fragrant, coating the mouth with energetic black and blue fruits and a velvety texture, finishing with fantastic length and purity. Drink: 2024-2040.

The 2020 Rol Valentin is gorgeous. Strong Cabernet Franc accents lend tons of aromatic presence to play off a core of rich, heady dark-fleshed fruit. Black cherry, plum, mocha, espresso and grilled herbs all build effortlessly as the 2020 opens in the glass. The new oak is a bit strong, but otherwise, the balance here is very fine. Drink: 2025-2035.

Blackberry, blackcurrant, dark-chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. It’s medium-to full-bodied with strong yet creamy tannins and a fresh finish.

Gorgeous blackcurrant nose, sweet and ripe, beautifully expressive with lots of purple floral scents, too. I love the core of this, it's juicy, clean and exciting. More lively than the nose suggests, with strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants to the fore giving life and joy. Tannins are fine and well integrated. This is more lightly framed than some, with such a delicate handling of the structure, the powdery and fine tannins supporting and not overwhelming. More delicate than I was expecting, yet there’s no doubt this is still a powerful wine with gentle muscles and intensity, it’s just controlled and waiting at the moment. Excellent. Drink: 2025-2039.

A particular success for this estate, the 2022 Saint-Pierre offers up aromas of cassis, licorice and violets, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate that's lively and sapid, with powdery structuring tannins and a penetrating finish. Its tannic weight tempers the wine's sweetness of fruit to deliver a classy, nicely balanced result.

The 2022 Saint-Pierre was picked 12-26 September at around 35hL/ha and matured in 48% new oak. It has an intense bouquet with black cherries, iodine and touches of blood orange. Delineated and focused. The palate is where the action is with gorgeous svelte tannins, perfectly judged acidity, harmonious, plush but not overbearing. Velvety toward the finish, yet there is real tenderness here. It actually is reminiscent of Las-Cases at the moment. Drink 2029-2065.

A real "wow" wine in the making, the 2022 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) checks in as 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. This darker, powerful wine offers up loads of pure cassis and black cherry-like fruits as well as ample chocolate, graphite, and lead pencil nuances. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, it nevertheless stays pure, impeccably balanced, and shows a real sense of elegance. The alcohol here is 13.9% and the élevage is in 48% new French oak. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Smells dark and deep; dark chocolate, savoury liquorice spice and ripe fruit. Joyously fruity and juicy on the palate with a salty tang that really carries the freshness and sense of minerality. I love the frame and the flavour with intensely grippy tannins but it works, excellently presented with flow and movement, direction and finesse. Cool and classic with great mineral markers of salt, liquorice and crushed stones. Feels sophisticated and really compelling, a great surprise and top buy. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Harvest 12-26 September. Yield of 34hl/ha. Drink 2029 - 2049.

Concentrated, lush, deep, ripe, full, and intense, the fruits are elegant, creamy, ripe, and polished. There is a purity to the fruits, and a sensuality to the texture that really works here this year. The wine blends 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot. 13.9% ABV. Drink from 2025-2045.

The quality of the 2022 Trotte Vieille took me by surprise, but clearly more diligent viticulture, combined with a new winery equipped with fully 26 vats for the estate's 11 hectares of vineyards, is beginning to pay off, as this is the most complete, integrated young wine I have ever tasted at this address. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, violets and incense, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep core of vibrant fruit, beautifully refined tannins and a long, saline finish. A blend of fully 50% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, it derives exclusively from Trotte Vieille's historic clay-limestone walled vineyard.

The 2022 Trotte Vieille is a hugely intriguing wine. The aromatics alone are wonderfully alluring. Sweet red-toned fruit, mint, blood orange, spice, licorice and rose petal infuse the 2022 with compelling inner perfume. Layered and complex, with tons of character, Trotte Vieille is shaping up to be terrific. In 2022, Trotte Vieille is not as bombastic as it has been in some recent years, and that is a positive. Drink 2028-2052.

The most structured and impressive Trottevieille I have ever tasted. It is full-bodied yet compacted with a fine velvet texture. Intense finish with super tension and focus. Could move up a notch.

My rough note on the 2022 Château Trotte Vieille included more than one expletive, and this beauty is straight-up gorgeous. Vivid blue fruits, violets, flowers, and chocolate all make an appearance on the nose, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered texture, perfect tannins, and nicely integrated oak. Based on 50% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, it remains to be seen if this will ultimately match the magical 2020, but we're not far off. This is a château readers need to have on their radar.

A striking and seriously impressive Trotte Vieille in 2022. Serious and strong aromatically, fully expressive with dark ripe bramble fruits, softly fragrant with gentle perfumed nuances. Bright and alive in the glass, has some tension, a sense of linearity and focus, with not much expansiveness at this point but the tannin detail and definition is exceptional with a soft creamy, chalky, powdery and firm texture. So refined, feels almost light in the mouth but there’s concentration and power underneath with mouthwatering acidity keeping the sense of life. Extremely well constructed with poise and a sense of definition to the overall frame. Very precise and totally moreish in a brooding way. A very complete wine with so much to like. 100% new oak. 60% grand vin. 30hl/ha. 3.70pH. First vintage fully operating in the new gravity fed cellar. Drink 2030 - 2050.

Almost opaque in color, the wine pops with black cherries, tobacco leaf, flowers, plums, smoke, and chocolate in the aromatics. The palate is silky, vibrant, and plush. The fruits are deep, intense, long, vibrant, and most importantly, pure. There is length, complexity, opulence, balance and a strong sensation of crushed stones, blackberries, chocolate, and plums in the finish you can taste and feel. TrotteVieille has been on an incredible roll lately. Perhaps, with the aid of their new cellars, this is the best vintage in the history of the estate! The wine blends 50% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.14.5% ABV. The harvest took place September 8 - September 27. Yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2027-2055.

    Cellar: 8 - 10 Years (2031-2033)
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Cheval des Andes is the brainchild of Pierre Lurton from Cheval Blanc with the dream to follow the original Malbec vines from Bordeaux to Argentina. Malbec was brought to Argentina in the mid-19th century, and having avoided the phylloxera epidemic that swept through Europe, the ungrafted vines here represent a unique opportunity to express Malbec in a way not possible with the grafted vines found elsewhere. With this aim, Chateau Cheval Blanc started a joint venture with Terrazas de Los Andes in 1999 and Cheval des Andes was born. Since then, a predominantly Malbec, Bordeaux-style blend has become the signature of Cheval des Andes. The 2019 vintage though is made of an equal blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, under the new French winemaker, Gerald Gabillet.

A 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Pitch black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Closed at first but becoming more expressive with time in the glass are blackcurrant and red cherry aromas infused with a mix of graphite and black olives which followed by some dusty pencil shaving like notes, tobacco and spicy herbs. Much more open for business than the nose, the medium to full bodied palate is immersed in rich red to black currant and black cherry fruits which are delivered with driving length. Notions of black olive, dried herbs, earthy graphite, tobacco and spicy cedar linger on the back half. Agile acidity and finely structured tannins tighten up the long refined finish.
    Cellar 8-10 years plus.
    Alc. 14%

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 Cheval des Andes had a more reductive vinification and élevage, making the wine a bit shy and in need of time to open up, as one of their objectives was to make it more age-worthy. Another objective is to get to a 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, which they achieved in this vintage for the first time, going back to the initial character of the wine that was the idea of Argentinean winemaker Roberto de la Mota; so, they are closing the circle and going back to the initial idea, with more implication from the Cheval Blanc team. This is the first vintage fully under the charge of the new French winemaker, Gerald Gabillet, who fermented by plot, isolating some specific parts of the vineyard, like the borders where you tend to get higher yields because of the irrigation. It matured in 225- and 400-liter oak barrels and in oak vats. They used more barrels and vats from Stockinger, which they like and rotate; the wine spends an average of 13 to 14 months in oak, but some lots get 11 months and others get 16. 2019 was a mild vintage, cooler than 2017 and warmer than 2018, with rain at the right time, which helped to avoid hydric stress, and without extremes (which they had in 2020 with three weeks of extreme heat). The wine is young and tender and a bit oaky, which Gerald attributed to the reductiveness; it's ripe without excess, with around 14.2% alcohol, mellow acidity and velvety tannins. There's more Cabernet here, so the aromatic expression can be something between 2017 and 2018, but Cabernet marks the palate a lot and makes the wine more age-worthy, as it provides the structure and length that the Malbec lacks. So, the wine might be less accessible when young and should develop slowly in bottle. It's tasty and supple and has the ingredients and the balance for what they are aiming for. In the following vintages, they follow this path, and Gabillet feels that having more precision allows the wines to reflect the differences between vintages better. They keep producing around 100,000 bottles. It was bottled in late January 2021. The way they want to describe the wine is the Argentinean expression of Cheval Blanc. And I can only agree. Drink: 2023-2035.

A refined but spicy Cheval, showing charcoal, blueberries, wild herbs, lavender and hints of bacon and cedar. Medium to full body with extremely fine tannins that get dialed into the fruit with violet, spices and sweet blue fruit at the end. Long and subtle. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Cheval des Andes is a 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon from Las Compuertas and Paraje Altamira, Mendoza. The 2019 was 40% aged in 225-liter barrels, 40% in 500-liter barrels and 20% in foudres. It’s red with violet flecks in the glass. It has a fresh nose of plum and blackcurrant accompanied by hints of white pepper, mint and violets over a bed of cedar and sandalwood. On the palate, the feel is finely grained with a leaner, more agile flow than in previous years, while the freshness brings plenty of energy before the lengthy finish of fruit and country herb aromas. The vineyard, planted in the 1910s using a unique French massal selection, is located in the Apalta Valley, near the town of Santa Cruz on the western side of the Colchagua Valley. In 1994 the property was acquired by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband Cyril de Bournet, with a vision to highlight the exceptional terroir of Apalta drawing upon their French expertise. Clos Apalta was born soon after, in 1997, as the iconic wine of the Domaines Bournet-Lapostolle in Chile. The team is currently led by Charles de Bournet, the son of the founders and 7th generation.

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 Clos Apalta was produced with a blend of 70% Carmenere, 18% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot, extremely high in Carmenere and low in Cabernet Sauvignon in a ripe and warm year. It fermented with indigenous yeasts for four to five weeks, with manual punch-down of the cap, 67% in 7,500-liter French oak vats and 33% in new French oak barrels followed by malolactic in new French oak barrels. The élevage was 24 months in 90% new barrels and 10% second use. It's powerful, big and ripe, with 15% alcohol and a pH of 3.57. It's creamy and juicy, with very high ripeness and a notable absence of herbal notes; it's oaky, smoky and decadent, coming through as luxurious, round, lush and velvety. The Conterno Fantino 2019 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped (with 6,250 bottles made) is perhaps more floral, with plenty of rose, and fruity, with lots of cherry, compared to the other new releases in this portfolio. This wine displays a dark garnet color that suggests a robust and savory wine to follow. Indeed, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino does reveal a rather austere approach with dried fruit, blackcurrant and fig. I wish there was just a hint more fresh fruitiness to those aromas, but the wine has already veered toward an evolved stage. This prompts me to suggest a shorter drinking window. There is a hint of dryness to the tannins, and the acidity is welcome. Drink: 2024-2035.

A racy red penetrated by juicy cherry, raspberry, rose hip and fresh thyme flavors fused to a linear structure, with dense, quivering tannins. Best from 2025 through 2040.

In 2018, Andrea Costanti used fewer tonneaux than usual, opting instead for larger, less oxidative casks, a significant portion of which were new. This lends some oak nuances but doesn’t detract. Aromas of exotic spice, violet and chestnut are amplified by a touch of volatile acidity. Those dark purple floral notes carry through to the palate, which brags lovely weight with balanced proportions and mouthwatering, citrussy acidity. The tannins are weighing down the finish right now, but give this another year or so to come together and it should be a joy to drink. Drink: 2024-2037.

    Sardinia, ITALY
    $64. 99

    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 15.5%
    Closure: Cork

The production of Vernaccia in the lower Valley of the Tirso in Sardinia, has its roots in very ancient times.  Maturation takes place in chestnut barrels which are oxygenated, and the wine develops a flor, a natural, native yeast growth which acts as a protective layer, while also imparting certain flavours and aromas to the wine. Sherry is also made with a similar production method, and the resulting wine is not unlike a full-bodied fino Sherry.
Bright amber colour with rose gold tinged edges. The nose offers up a fino sherry like aromatic profile lead by an assortment of nuts including hazelnut and almonds with some salty saline like notes also present. Well rounded and silken in its feel the palate is laden with hazelnut, roasted almond and salted cashew flavours. Finishes bone dry with a salty hazelnut aftertaste.

Founded in 1835 in the heart of the northern Rhône, the Saint-Esprit is their entry level Cotes du Rhone offering that consistently delivers great value.
Deep dark red black colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Lifted red raspberry, cherry and red liquorice scents infused with herbs du Provence are trailed by some earthy incense like notes and spice. Rich, spicy dark raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits are both juicy and fleshy textured with herbs du Provence, earthy incense and pepper infusions on the back half. Looking terrific out of barrel, the 2020 Hermitage Les Bessards boasts classic aromas of crushed stone, black cherries and cassis on the nose. It's full-bodied, perhaps a touch warm, but with wonderfully silky, rich tannins and a long, licorice-tinged finish. It should drink well for close to two decades. Drink: 2025-2040.

Inky violet. Displays assertive aromas of blackcurrant, cherry-cola and violet, along with olive, smoked meat and vanilla nuances that gain strength with aeration. Vibrant, focused and ppealingly sweet, offering intense, mineraldriven black and blue fruit, floral pastille and smoky bacon flavors that become deeper and spicier as the wine opens up. The floral note comes back strong on the impressively long, penetrating finish, which features youthfully chewy tannins and exotic spice notes.

All Syrah from unquestionably one of the greatest terroirs on the planet for the variety, the dense purple-hued 2020 Hermitage Les Bessards offers up a monster of a bouquet of primordial blue fruits, camphor, burning embers, and scorched earth. This carries to a powerful yet incredibly pure Hermitage with building tannins, bright acidity, stunning mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It's going to push the upper boundary of my rating scale, but it's for consumers with plenty of patience and will be mostly only educational for the first decade of life or so.

Full-bodied, fine and tightly wound, but with a good sense of harmony and typicity. Stretching skywards, this is a tense, saline style but with sufficient fat around the bones to make for a long-lasting wine. You can really feel the granite. From their oldest parcel of lieu-dit Les Bessards, fermented in concrete, then aged for 12 months in new and one-year-old barrels. Drink: 2028-2045.

Rock-solid, with a core of clearly defined red and black cherry compote flavors that bristle with energy, as apple wood, savory and anise notes sparkle throughout. A racy graphite spine drives the finish, where a long, lingering twang of iron plays out amid the fruit. Best from 2024 through 2038.

Beginning with the 2015 vintage, Delas have introduced a new wine in the range from the hill of Hermitage made exclusively from the "Les Grandes Vignes" lieu-dit. Situated above L'Ermite and just east of the chapel at the peak of the Hermitage hillside at around 325m altitude, this south-facing plot forms an amphitheatre of semicircular vine terraces planted to Syrah.

Looking a bit more supple and red fruited than the Les Bessards, the 2020 Hermitage Ligne de Crete Les Grandes Vignes (tasted from two barrels) features hints of crushed stone and bright raspberries. Full-bodied and supple, it finishes long and silky textured. It should be drinkable soon after release and continue to drink well for more than a decade. Drink: 2023-2035.

Deep, vivid ruby. Smoky, mineral- and spiceaccented red and dark berry preserve scents show excellent clarity and a sexy floral top note. Offers concentrated but wonderfully energetic blackberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors that become sweeter and pick up hints of candied flowers, vanilla and olive on the back half. Finishes chewy, sharply focused and extremely long, with solid tannins adding shape and final grip.

The 2020 Hermitage Ligne De Crête comes all from the Les Grands Vignes lieu-dit, at the very top of Hermitage Hill, and is aged for 20 months in fine-grain barrels. It's another inky hued Hermitage yet has a more rounded, supple style compared to the Les Bessards, with gorgeous cassis and black raspberry fruits, notes of crushed stone, bacon fat, new leather, and flowery incense, full-bodied richness, velvety tannins, and a great finish. This seamless, sexy, incredibly floral Hermitage will be drinkable with just 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 20-30 years.

The Delas parcel of this fabled vineyard is under one hectare in size, reliably yielding 22–28 hectoliters each vintage. The 2020 Cote Rotie La Landonne offers forward raspberry and herb notes underscored by hints of roasted meat. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky and long on the finish. Not a huge, blockbuster vintage, but it is one that nicely expresses the site and should be approachable young. Drink: 2023-2035.

Dark purple. A highly complex bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, incense and potpourri; olive and exotic spice nuances build in the glass. Offers palatestaining cassis, bitter cherry, olive, licorice and violet pastille flavors that show superb delineation and a spicy snap of cracked pepper on the back half. Juniper and warm herbal notes behind berry fruits on a fresh nose. Rounded and juicy on the palate, this is a ripe, well-shaped wine with fine tannins, a good sense of energy and true focus. A slick of ripe, fine tannin in reserve gives this some ageing potential. Fermented in open-top concrete tanks for 20 days, then matured in new and one-year-old barrels for 14 months. Sourced from eight estate-owned vineyards within the Wairau Valley with vines on average 26 years old. The fruit is whole bunch pressed to tank for fermentation and matured on lees for 4 months before bottling.
Brilliant water like colour with a greenish tone to the edges. Leaping out of the glass are pungent scents of passionfruit, grapefruit and herbaceous gooseberries followed by some green apple, grassy asparagus and flinty mineral notes. Zesty passionfruit, lime and gooseberry fruits race across the intensely flavoured palate with some herbaceous grassy characters, green apple, subtle asparagus and mineral elements lying underneath. Finishes dry and crisp with a long zippy aftertaste.

Sourced from estate fruit in the Wairau Valley you’ll find star fruit, passion blossom, juicy pineapple and guava. The abundance of fruit continues on the palate with an electric line of acidity and sea spray finish. The dryness of the wine takes elegance to another dimension. Sith purity and drive, this is a triumph of a vintage and its magic is captured in the bottle. Drink now with raw scallop ceviche.

The appellation Jurançon is well-loved by sommeliers and found in all the best restaurants of France and around the world, yet sadly it remains off the radar for many wine lovers. Nearly 500 years ago the future King of France Henry IV, was baptised in Pau with the traditional garlic and a spoonful of Jurançon wine. That year was 1553 and just five years later in 1558 a small rural property was entered into the register of lands under the name Caussapé. And it was on this property in 1980, then his parents’ farm, that Henri Ramonteau established Domaine Cauhapé. Since those beginnings on just one hectare, Henri has built up the estate to today’s area of 47ha and become the most renowned producer of Jurançon wines, both dry and sweet.
A blend of 30% Gros Manseng, 30% Petit Manseng, 30% Camaralet, 5% Lauzet and 5% Courbu Blanc fermented in stainless steel and matured on lees for 5 months.
Bright straw colour with a faint glimmer of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Exotic aromas of pineapple and guava mix with ripe yellow peach, citrus and distinct honeysuckle notes. Bursting with energy the palate features an exceptionally concentrated flavour profile of pineapple and guava fruits that show plenty of textural volume. Some ripe yellow peach, honeysuckle and wet slate characters lie underneath. Finishes dry with mouth watering acidity and a long rich aftertaste that carries a zesty freshness.

It’s no big secret that the prices of Burgundy have skyrocketed in recent years and whilst the wines from Chablis haven’t risen quite as steeply it’s becoming increasingly difficult to even locate sub $50 Petit Chablis. So a $60 Premier Cru Chablis that delivers exceptional quality is indeed a rare find these days.
Francis Boudin is the third-generation vigneron at Chantemerle and the estate firmly falls in the traditional mould - he despises oak. As the story goes, his grandfather was a cooper and with so much exposure to oak during his formative years he banished it from the family cellars opting for concrete and steel alone.
Old vine material is the key to the estate’s success. While many in the region during the 1970's were re-planting vineyards to high-yielding material the Boudins were planting with naturally low-yielding vines. Along with careful vineyard management, an informed but gentle touch in the winery and judicious lees work to bring out flesh and texture, Boudin produces supple wines, that speak of place clearly layered with Chablis' prized minerality.

A gorgeous Premier Cru Chablis that’s drinking superbly and delivers amazing value.

Brilliant pale straw colour with yellow straw tinged edges and a watery hue. Showing plenty of intensity, seductive pear, lime and green to apple scents laced with wet stone, dried honey and oyster shell like notes evolve out of the glass. Possessing a river stone like textural feel, this gorgeous Chablis features rich, mouth filling pear, lime and dried honey flavours that envelope the palate. Lending further interest are wet slate, chalky mineral and oyster shell like characters. Excellent concentration and drive with fresh underlying acidity. Finishes long and pure. Proves there’s still value to be had in Chablis.

Beautifully ripe and fragrant fruit here, with mangoes, white blossoms, star fruit and cashews. Some nougat. Full-bodied, creamy and with excellent weight that you might not expect for the appellation or vintage. Very textured with a mineral dryness. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Delightful pear and lime aromas are complimented by hints of dried honey, wet stone and mineral. Delicious pear, lime and green apple fruits carry a beautifully rounded river stone like feel with notions of slate and mineral lying underneath. Excellent intensity and balance. Finishes dry with invigorating acidity and a long fresh, stony mineral laden conclusion.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

This has lovely complexity with notes of apples, praline, lemon cream and hints of vanilla bean, along with sea salt and crushed stones. It's medium-bodied with fantastic firmness and phenolic texture. Structured and serious aligote. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

This great Chateauneuf combines the richness of the vintage with remarkable precision and vitality. Stacks of ripe damson plum, licorice and candied orange. Great tannin structure and lots of power on the full-bodied palate, with bitter chocolate and a stony character that builds at the very long, super-focused finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Another beautiful wine from Laurent, his 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is a classic blend of 82% Grenache, 5% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, and the rest Vaccarese and Counoise, all from the northern part of the appellation, aged in tank. Perfumed red fruits, rose petals, spice, and sappy, peppery garrigue all flow to a medium to full-bodied, seamless 2020 with silky tannins, wonderful balance, and a great finish. It needs 3-5 years in the cellar to hit the early stages of its drink window, where it should keep nicely for over a decade. Drink: 2022-2033.

Little herbal note to the fruit bringing some complexity, this is saline, light, fresh, fluid and drinkable. Plenty of texture and interest to the fruit, with really searching tannins. Needs time to come round, will be elegant and charming when it does. Fruit, structure, fragrance and energy - it's got the lot. Very Charvin. Organically grown in the northwest of the appellation, in lieux-dits Cabrières and Maucoil where there's galets roulés and sand. It's fermented and then aged for 21 months in concrete using indigenous yeasts, then bottled unfiltered. Drink: 2025-2032.

Run by Laurent Charvin this small family estate has vineyard holdings of 8 hectares in Chateauneuf du Pape and 13 hectares in Cotes du Rhone. Certified organic the average age of the vines is over 50 years old. These Grenache based wines follow traditional winemaking techniques with no de-stemming and all aging takes place in cement takes. Charvin’s Côtes du Rhône is regularly rated as one of the very best from this area and perhaps it is not surprising as the vines for this cuvee border directly on to the appellation for Chateauneuf du Pape in the northern sector where they are located.
The 2020 is an interesting contrast in style to the rich, powerful 2019 vintage being brighter and fresher with more red fruits.

Flooded with delicious red to dark fruits, this delicious Cotes du Rhone is rich and polished yet also remarkably fresh with a muscular edge.

A blend of 81% Grenache, 7% Syrah, 7% Mourvedre and 5% Carignan raised in concrete vats for 18 months. Deep dark red colour with black shaded edges and a bright dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass are delightful red raspberry, liquorice and ripe cherry scents which mix in with Provincial herb, subtle incense and peppered earth notes. Rich and polished yet also remarkably fresh, the palate is flooded with delicious spicy red to dark raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits. Slightly chalky tannins impart a muscular feel with fresh provincial herb infusions, incense and scorched earth elements lying underneath. Peppery, slightly grippy finish with a long delicious red to dark fruited aftertaste.

Delicate peach, strawberry and blood orange  aromas are followed by some tangerine and wet slate notes. 55% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 15% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Counoise and 5% Carignan. And how much does importer Felix Riley love rosato!
Peach, blood orange, redcurrant, rosehip and dried flowers, a little nutmeg and spice, and a smattering of smoky dried herb. It’s crisp, sports a little blood orange bitterness, a fine milky/chalky texture, peach skin and citrus tang, a little leesy creaminess, and a tight and sappy finish of good length. Classic Provence. Drink 2023-2026.

Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Fragrant red fruit aromas of raspberry, cherry and liquorice are followed by some fresh herb, delicate earth and spicy pepper notes. Light to medium weight, delicious spicy red raspberry, cherry and red liquorice fruits overlay a subtle scorched earth and peppered fresh herb back drop. Juicy, energetic feel with lively acidity and polished tannins. Finishes with a red fruit laden aftertaste that’s infused with spice and pepper.
