2023 Domaine Ballot Millot Meursault Charmes Premier Cru
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $470. 00
    Bottle
    $5640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Domaine Ballot-Millot, run today by Charles Ballot, dates back to the late 17th century and holds 10 hectares in Meursault and surrounding villages. The estate has a reputation for meticulous viticulture, low yields, and restrained winemaking. New oak is used sparingly, and fermentations are slow and natural, producing wines with a strong sense of place and remarkable balance. Ballot-Millot has become one of Meursault's most respected addresses.

Charmes is among the most generous and approachable of Meursault's premiers crus, with deeper soils yielding a wine of breadth and supple texture.

A slightly ripe nose offers up an array of white orchard fruit, especially pear, acacia, petrol and a hint of tangerine peel. There is again very good density to the beautifully textured and succulent medium-bodied flavors that aren't quite as refined as those of the Bouchères but do offer more volume as well as just a bit better depth on the balanced and saline-infused finale. Good stuff here. Drink through 2033+.

The 2023 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru has an intense nose of dried honey, walnut and crushed stone—clean and precise, quintessentially Charmes. The oak is neatly subsumed. The palate is wonderful: slightly honeyed in texture, rounded and weighty, not as mineral-driven as the Perrières but the sheer presence of this Meursault is captivating. An outstanding wine from Charles Ballot. Drink 2026-2044.

Pale lemon colour, with an excellent bouquet that speaks well of Charmes. This has flesh, white fruit, some oak, a sense of grip, still very muscular. Very youthful but with all the right ingredients to make a fine Charmes for at least medium term keeping. Drink from 2029-2034.

Perrieres is the most esteemed vineyard in Meursault, producing wines of precision and mineral tension. Ballot-Millot's rendition is tightly coiled and built for long ageing.

Prominent mineral reduction nuances are present on the overtly floral-suffused aromas of spice, citrus and green apple. The super-sleek and almost painfully intense medium weight flavors brim with a borderline aggressive stoniness that is like rolling a tiny pebble around the mouth before terminating in a lingering finish shaped by lemon-tinged acidity. This is also terrific. Drink through 2033+.

The 2023 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru, which I tasted as part of a masterclass in London with Charles Ballot, has an intense nose with crushed stone alongside hints of white peach and white chocolate. But it is the mineralité that drives this along. The palate is tensile from the start, showcasing razor-sharp tannins and killer mineralité with a very persistent and prolonged finish. Another outstanding Meursault. Drink 2027-2046.

Pale lemon and lime. Very intense bouquet while keeping cool. This is the best balanced of the three Meursault 1ers crus, the structure can easily take the sunshine and there is a beautiful backbone. All that this vineyard should be, with superb persistence and all the stones one could want. Drink from 2030-2036.

Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Pronounced ripe lime and red apple scents are complimented by hints of honeysuckle, orange blossom, wet stone and distinct mineral notes. Rich, mouthfilling flavours of lime, red apple, pear and honeysuckle carry terrific volume and texture across the palate with infusions of orange blossom and slatey mineral characters lying underneath. Brisk acidity with a long and intense yet energetic finish.

A muscular and concentrated dry riesling that manages to remain very clean and bright, in spite of 14% alcohol. The tropical-fruit aromas are only just opening up, but the balance of freshness and ripeness is spot-on. Long, silky finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Certified Biodynamic. Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Intense ripe pear, baked apple and honeycomb like aromas fill the nostrils with hints of musk and ginger also apparent. Rich pear, ripe apple and honeysuckle flavours have a luscious feel yet are underscored by wonderful fresh acidity. Subtle musk and quince elements linger through the back half. Finishes dry with brisk acidity and a harmoniously elegant conclusion.

2018 Domaine Belargus Clos des Rucheres Savennieres Magnum (1500ml)
    Loire Valley, FRANCE
    $530. 00
    Bottle
    $6360.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Domaine Belargus is the realisation of a dream by former Parisian investor Ivan Massonnat. While it was his love and respect for Burgundy that ignited his passion for wine, his family connection to Chinon opened his eyes to the potential of Chenin Blanc from the great terroirs of the Loire Valley. A chance encounter with retiring vigneron Jo Pithon lead the pair to meet at the foot of the legendary Coteau des Treilles vineyard one frosty morning, and the fate of each was sealed. Further acquisitions followed, including one quarter of Les Quarts in the historic heart of the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation, along with sites across the river in Savennières. This new estate is 100% dedicated to Chenin Blanc and celebrates the grape's versatility regarding terroirs and wine style. Ivan has installed a young team, and together they are currently converting to biodynamics, with a single-plot approach inspired by Ivan's first love: Burgundy.

Adapting their approach each vintage, the various plots are harvested at their optimum maturity at incredibly low yields of around 25 hectolitres per hectare. Fermentation occurs in barrel using indigenous yeasts, and can last from less than a month to more than a year, depending on each plot and the vintage characteristics. This is one of the most exciting new ventures in France today, and should appease lovers of high quality, terroir specific wines.

Located at the bottom of La Roche-aux-Moines, the “Clos des Ruchères” (Monopole) rests on a slope of purple schists, covered with a very thin layer of soil of only twenty centimetres. This tiny steep plot, worked like a garden, gives birth to a wine carried by a great mineral tension. Two years of maturation give it length and aromatic complexity, as well as a significant aging potential.

    Other Reviews....
Located at the bottom of La Roche-aux-Moines, the steep, southwest-facing 0.4-hectare Clos des Ruchères monopole rests on a slope of purple schists, covered with a very thin layer of soil of only 20 centimeters. Aged two years on the lees, the 2018 Savennières Clos des Ruchères has a golden-yellow color and opens with an intense but also quite developed nose of ripe and stewed yellow fruits, whereas the crystalline, flinty schist notes remain in the background. Round, highly elegant and refined on the fruit-intense and aromatic palate, this is a crystalline, linear but also juicy and well-concentrated Ruchères with great mineral tension but most of all finesse. The finish is much fresher and purer than expected from the nose and very long and intense. Given the elegant and sustainable finish, the 2018 should have significant aging potential. Tasted in June 2021. Drink 2021 - 2045.

Clos des Ruchères is a tiny plot, facing south-west. Chenin Blanc planted in 2008, and a terroir of loam and clay on purple schist. A nose of hazelnut, almond and perfectly integrated oak. After some swirling, the bouquet develops with aromas of spices, flowers and flint. Superb mouthfeel with a texture that is both fine-grained and fleshy. This wine has remarkable freshness, also some salinity while also leaving a slight sensation of tannins. A Savennières of crystalline clarity. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040.

Still in élevage, this cuvée is sourced from a tiny 0.4-hectare vineyard on degraded purple schist and clay. The total crop amounts to just three barrels, and this is a sample from one barrel rather than a blending, so not entirely representative. Compared to Gaudrets the nose offers a huge step up in character, showing a very pure schistose style, much more focused, and dressed with a fragrant floral minerality. This is very fine, but the palate is heavily marked by vanillin oak at the moment, all wrapped up in threads of stone and schist, along with very fresh acidity. Really focused, with a very fine-boned style, swirled with liquorice, vanilla and fennel from the oak. It is difficult to judge on this sample taken from one obviously new barrel. Nevertheless it feels evidently superior to Gaudrets.

"Les Quarts" is the original plot that gave its name to the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation. The magic of the Quarts-de-Chaume terroir is the sunny hillside facing south, exposed to the morning mists of the Layon river and ventilated by constant winds resulting in a botrytis of rare concentration. The schists in the subsoil give this cuvée a vertical structure and an elegant freshness.

    Other Reviews....
"Les Quarts is the original plot that gave its name to the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation," reminds Ivan Massonnat, spiritus rector of Domaine Belargus. The Quarts-de-Chaume terroir—a sunny, south-facing hillside on schists, exposed to the morning mists of the Layon River and ventilated by constant winds—results in "a botrytis of rare concentration," says Massonnat, as the 2018 Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru Liquoreux Les Quarts demonstrates impressively. Amber-orange colored, the nose is deep, intense and concentrated, very complex and elegant, with spicy and balsamic apricot notes, nougat and porcini aromas as well as flinty-mineral notes and associations of crispy ham hock. Round, smooth and sweet but with great finesse and elegance, this is a rich yet almost weightless and perfectly balanced liquoreux from the central Les Quarts plot of the QDC appellation that develops a vertical, highly stimulating and filigreed structure that leads to a long, crisp and frisky piquancy and salty finesse that makes this grand cru wine extremely digestible, even at this very early stage. Belargus's 2018 Les Quarts pairs richness and sweetness with crystalline finesse and elegance in an unrivaled way. A fabulous, irresistible grand cru! 11% alcohol. Tasted in June 2021. Drink 2021 - 2100.

South-facing plot on pudding-stone bedrock. More gingerbread than Les Rouères, Les Quarts displays right from the first whiff all its power and complexity. Density and energy join forces for a full, unctuous wine with significant ageing potential. Superb. Drinking Window 2030 - 2060.

One of two cuvées currently made available in this appellation, this comes from 3.08 hectares of vines planted on schist with a south-facing slope of 10% to 20%. The team filled several barrels ranging from new to a few years old, and this is a sample from a new barrel. The nose is simply huge and well-toasted, loaded with scented vanillin lactones, carrying rich scents of dried fruits especially dried fig. I find the same character on the palate, the oak showing quite strongly, but it soon opens up to release the fruit as it fills out on the palate. It presents seams of dried fruits, dried figs, dates and raisins, with a soft and slightly chalky phenolic backbone, and the requisite acidity. I think there is fine potential here but it is a bit difficult to predict from this limited oak-dominated sample.

Domaine Bernard Gripa own sixteen hectares of vineyards, based primarily around Mauves in the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation. While Bernard is still assisting at the winery, it is his son Fabrice that now directs the winemaking activities for the family. Much of the vineyard holdings are old vines averaging 65 years of age, with some vineyards over 80 years old. In addition to Saint-Joseph, the Gripa family also own 3.5 hectares of Marsanne and Roussanne in white-grape-only appellation of Saint-Péray.

Le Berceau is the top white from Domaine Bernard Gripa, and is a selection of 100% old vine Marsanne from one hectare of vines planted exclusively on granite soil terraces.

A little honeycomb oak on the nose, the palate is broad but not overly fat. There's a good sense of intensity and energy in the glass and this finishes long, with well-integrated oak. Classic Saint-Joseph in a fresh style, showing mouthwatering salinity. An exceptional wine. Hand-harvested old vine Marsanne grown on granite. Domaine Berthet-Bondet was created in 1984 when Jean and Chantal Berthet-Bondet revived an old, long-dormant estate in Château-Chalon, drawing on Jean's early experience at Domaine Macle to guide the rebuild. Their holdings have since expanded to 11 hectares, largely Savagnin and Chardonnay, including 4 hectares in key south and south-east facing sites across Château-Chalon and neighbouring Menétru, now certified organic after decades of careful farming. The domaine quickly became known for its meticulous approach to both sous-voile and ouillé styles, a reflection of Jean's measured, thoughtful character and his influence within the appellation. Today his daughter Hélène leads the estate, refining the topped-up wines and further developing the range while demand continues to climb.

Chateau Chalon is no doubt the greatest site in the Jura for making Vin Jaune, the Grand Cru if you will, and produces wines with a touch more finesse than the other single site Vin Jaune.

Billaud-Simon is a reference point in Chablis, renowned for their precise, mineral-driven wines that epitomize the region’s purest expression. Established in 1815, the domaine has long been synonymous with razor-sharp tension and crystalline clarity, drawing from an exceptional array of terroirs, including holdings in vaunted Grand Crus like Les Clos, Vaudésir, and Les Preuses. Now under the stewardship of Faiveley, the wines remain resolutely Chablisien—steely, age-worthy, and deeply evocative of their limestone-rich origins. For those who prize terroir transparency, Billaud-Simon delivers Chablis at its most compelling.

Moderate though also easily detectible wood is present on the nose of iodine, white flowers and a hint of oyster shell. The markedly finer middleweight flavors exude evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the balanced, nicely dry and impressively long finish that displays the natural class of a fine MdT. As with many of these 2022s, it could use more depth but the style is lovely and understated. Drink through 2030+.

An even lemon yellow. The concentrated warmth of Montée de Tonnerre is showing here in a very attractive way, a little more compelling than Mont de Milieu. Very pure and crystalline on both nose and palate. Real drive and energy, just the vaguest hint of wood which adds more to texture than flavour. A very fine example. Be aware that Bailly noted that to this point the Bougros had only seen contact with stainless steel though it's possible he may rack it into barrel for a few months before it's bottled. A cool and reserved nose grudgingly offers up a combination of pronounced smoky mineral reduction, quinine and ocean breeze. The powerful, concentrated and muscular big-bodied flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension that also suffuses the crisp, very dry and beautifully long finish. This isn't refined, indeed it's borderline rustic but then again, elegance isn't why one buys Bougros. Drink through 2031+.

The Bougros is made from purchased grapes. All in tank so far but will probably have a spell in barrel, to remove the minor reduction. A luminous lemon and lime colour. Actually, the reduction on the nose is minimal, though there are some interesting grenadine notes on the palate which is otherwise not too exuberant. Citrus zest infuses the back of the palate. Very generous wood frames overtly exotic-suffused nose of mineral reduction, white peach, apricot, pretty floral and ample spice wisps. There is excellent punch to the refined middleweight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the lingering, firm and built-to-age finale. This too needs to develop more depth so more cellaring is in order plus it should help to better integrate the wood as this is pretty oaky today. Drink through 2030+.

Lemony colour. A touch of the wet wool reduction, more usual on a wine with greater age, but not in itself suggesting evolution. This wet wool aromatic is really just a sulphur compound, I believe. Then very spicy behind with a raft of white fruit energy and good acidity. Hangs on in well, plenty of latent concentration, just closed at the moment. Drink from 2028-2038.

This possesses the most complex, if most restrained, nose in the range with its aromas of essence of pear, white peach, exotic Asian tea and crushed fennel. There is a positively gorgeous texture to the medium weight plus flavors that are exceptionally rich thanks to the abundance of dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm acid spine shaping the hugely long finale. For the moment this is actually not quite as powerful and robust as the Bâtard, though a classic Montrachet often adds size and weight with age. Either way, this should prove to be outstanding in time. Drink through 2034+.

A markedly more floral-suffused and slightly cooler nose reflects notes of both white and yellow peach, citrus confit and a plenitude of spice elements. Here too the palate impression is seductive thanks to the superb concentration of the powerful and almost painfully intense broad-shouldered flavors that also display superb length on the balanced and equally tightly coiled finish. If you can find it, buy it. Drink through 2033+.

This superb rendition of Bâtard has surprisingly ripe notes of quince and melon de Cavaillon, acacia flower, and spice. The texture is dense and rich but kept lively by the fresh acidity of 2021. The grapes come from three parcels totaling nearly a half hectare. Two are planted with vines more than fifty years of age, and all three are in Chassagne near the border with Puligny. This year Blain stirred the lees (not always done) to give the wine a bit more density and depth. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, yet despite their renown, it seems the market has not yet fully appreciated just how good the wines currently being produced are. They are the largest owner of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, this includes prized plots such as Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Chambertin, Bonnes Mares, and Meursault Perrieres.

Founded in 1731, the subsequent nine generations of the Bouchard family has amassed an impressive 130ha of vineyards, including nearly 100 separate climats. It's perhaps this large size, contrasting the current trend for tiny producers with a cult following that has meant Bouchard are not front and centre in the minds of many Burgundy drinkers. A true shame as Bouchard are making some of the best wines in their history.

Bright and tensile, Bouchard's 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières offers up aromas of pear and green apple mingled with hazelnuts, white flowers and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, it's racy and electric, concluding with a saline finish.

The 2022 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has a crisp, minerally bouquet with a clever reduction, just lending a bit of tension and bite. The well-balanced palate has good intensity, very linear and tensile, crushed stone infusing the slightly peachy fruit with a long tail on the finish. Excellent. Drink 2027-2045.

From the two remaining plots of Perrières after one has been repositioned (see under Puligny Chalumeaux). Attractive fresh fruit on the nose and then the weight of the appellation comes up. Some ripe apples, but then a broader basket of slightly more exotic fruit, that has not been allowed to ripen too far. A fine balanced whole with the power to develop. Drink from 2032-2040.

The notes of lemon zest, aromas of apricot and white flowers, and the salty mineral edge give complexity to this beautiful expression of Perrières. The wine is concentrated and substantial on the palate, but it has the acidity to ensure it never loses its balance. The grapes are from two parcels – one in Dessus, on the border with Puligny, the other in Dessous, touching the Clos des Perrières. The old Roman quarries bring the minerality that sets this wine apart. The grapes were picked on 1 September, the same day as the Montrachet. Drink 2025-2045.

Distinctly cool and restrained aromas of Granny Smith apple, spice and plenty of citrus elements are framed in just enough wood influence to mention. There is almost painful intensity to the larger-bodied flavors that display a taut muscularity and plenty of minerality on the very dry, youthfully austere and impressively long finish. This is presently an impenetrable block that needs more complexity but the Bouchard CC is a wine that ages effortlessly and thus should have no trouble developing more depth over time. Aromas of pear, green apple, white flowers and wet stones introduce the 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a deep, medium to full-bodied wine that's taut, chiseled and racy, with excellent depth at the core and an abundance of chalky structuring extract. As usual, it derives from the domaine's holdings on the Ladoix side.

The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a taut and precise nose - quite a "cool" bouquet with apple blossom and hints of peach skin. The well-balanced palate offers mango and pineapple notes, betraying the warmth of the summer, compensated by a silver bead of acidity and a slightly peach, seductive finish. It will drink well for 15-20 years. Drink 2026-2046.

The Bouchard holding in Le Corton is made up of white marl on top of limestone slabs, and protected by the forest from the evening sun. Pale lemon and lime. The nose is slightly backward, delicate little flowers, but with the correct stony, almost gravelly aspect. Some riper fruit notes putting their heads above the parapet. A significant saline character too, behind. Drink from 2030-2038.

The Bouchard Corton Charlemagne reflects the vintage in an impressive way—it is a powerful wine, impressively substantial, long and almost fat in the mouth. Yet there is also an elegance and finesse to the wine that brings it into dynamic equilibrium, with aromas of ripe apple, apricot and hazelnuts and accents of hawthorn and hay. The grapes come from the domaine's superb four-hectare holding at the top of the slope, where recent studies with Françoise Vannier confirm 50 – 60 cm of yellow marl and limestone pebbles above the bedrock, explaining the delightful fresh acidity even in a warm year, such as 2022. Drink 2027 - 2055.

Bruno Colin established his own domaine in 2003, inheriting prime vineyard parcels when the Colin-Deléger estate was divided. Today he farms about 9 hectares across Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin. His wines are known for their precision and detail, combining ripe, expressive fruit with finely judged oak. Bruno's work in the cellar highlights the character of each cru while maintaining a consistently refined style.

Morgeot is a broad premier cru with varied soils, and Bruno's parcel produces a wine of depth and structure, typically on the more powerful side of Chassagne.

    Other Reviews....
A more floral-infused nose also reflects a whiff of the exotic though here it's more subtle, on the aromas of poached pear and discreet wood. The sleek and unusually refined middle weight flavor possess both good volume and focused power that seems to build on the seductive and sappy if punchy finale. This too is quite good and worth a look if you enjoy generously proportioned whites. Drink through 2030+.

Bordering Puligny and Saint-Aubin, En Remilly sits high on the slope with thin, rocky soils that yield taut, mineral-driven wines of great purity.

Smoky reduction completely dominates the underlying fruit at present so be sure to decant this if you're going to try a bottle young. The refined and strikingly textured medium weight flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration before terminating in a highly persistent, impeccably well-balanced and markedly dry, but not really austere, finale. This is a big and powerful wine, particularly by the usual standards of En Remilly and one that should age effortlessly. Well worth investigating. Drink through 2033+.

Perched at the top of Puligny, La Truffiere's poor, stony soils give particularly fine and linear wines. Bruno’s bottling shows notable clarity and length, with a distinctly Puligny profile.

This is also markedly floral in character with its nose of the essence of spiced pear and exotic tea aromas that are trimmed in moderate wood influence. The palate impression of the middle weight flavors is not nearly as dense or powerful but it is markedly finer and more mineral-driven as well before terminating in an almost delicate yet punchy, long and beautifully well-balanced finale. Founded in 1972 by Charles and Marie-Francoise Audoin, Domaine Charles Audoin has been central to Marsannay's evolution into one of the Cote de Nuits' most engaging appellations. From an initial three hectares, it has grown to fourteen across many of the village's key sites. Since taking over in 2000, Cyril Audoin has brought a quiet precision to both vineyard and cellar, guiding the estate to organic certification and overseeing the construction of a purpose-built winery. The result is a style that feels unmistakably of Marsannay: pure, composed, and full of energy.

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Delightful pear and lime aromas are complimented by hints of dried honey, wet stone and mineral. Delicious pear, lime and green apple fruits carry a beautifully rounded river stone like feel with notions of slate and mineral lying underneath. Excellent intensity and balance. Finishes dry with invigorating acidity and a long fresh, stony mineral laden conclusion.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

This has lovely complexity with notes of apples, praline, lemon cream and hints of vanilla bean, along with sea salt and crushed stones. It's medium-bodied with fantastic firmness and phenolic texture. Structured and serious aligote. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Lifted white peach, nectarine, citrus and dried honey scents are trailed by hints of biscuity nougat and flinty minerals. Concentrated ripe pear, white peach and nectarine fruits are underpinned by zesty, mineral infused acidity. Since our initial tasting, nearly two years ago, the palate has filled out and put on a bit more weight yet still remains lively and energetic. Subtle biscuit, crème brulee and infusions of gun flint linger through the back half. Understated in its power with a faint cream tinged yet highly invigorating feel, it finishes long and elegant.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Original tasting January 2022: Brilliant very pale straw colour with a subtle glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Captivating scents of white peach, pear, lime and dried honey drift through the olfactory senses with biscuity oak, citrusy nougat and spice notes ensuing. Brimming with freshness, delightful white peach, nectarine and lime fruits are glowing with energy. Subtle honeyed citrus, light biscuity oak and flinty mineral characters are also present. Vibrant, mineral infused acidity lends plenty of zip and focus to the finish.
    Cellar 4-5 years.

Scents of peach, honeycomb, fresh pastry and orange oil introduce the 2018 Marsannay La Charme aux Prêtres Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping wine that's quite perfumed and expressive this year, maintaining good underlying tension. This will offer a broad drinking window.

There is a whiff of the exotic present on the melon, tangerine and white orchard fruit-suffused nose that is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is notably better size, weight and concentration to the medium weight plus flavors; indeed this is a big Marsannay blanc that terminates in a more mineral and soil-inflected finish. Very good quality in a package that could be enjoyed young.

Audoin's finest white this year is the 2018 Marsannay Au Champ Salomon Blanc, a striking wine that wafts from the glass with notes of citrus oil, fresh pastry, confit lemon and crisp orchard fruit. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and muscular, with a racy spine of acidity, chalky structuring extract and a saline finish.

Here the wood treatment is a bit more evident though by no means intrusive on the nicely floral and citrus-suffused nose that is also vaguely exotic. The succulent, round and generous flavors possess reasonably good vibrancy and solid mid-palate concentration though the citrusy and dry finish is not quite as complex. This too should be easily approachable young.

Domaine Christian Moreau is one of the most respected names in Chablis blessed with magnificent vineyard holdings in the best areas of Chablis. The highlights are undoubtedly the amazing range of Grand cru vineyards including one single holding of approximately 3 hectares in Les Clos as well as 0.41 hectares of Clos des Hospices dans Les Clos plus slightly smaller holdings in Valmur, Blanchots and Vaudesir. The wines are gaining in even clearer expression with the vineyards having been certified organic since 2013 and together with some new tanks and other investments the results are showing clearly in the wines with each vintage. These are wines of precision, crystal clear typicity, and elegance that will age classically while enabling tremendous enjoyment throughout their lives.

The Petit Chablis vines are located at the top of the hill of Grand Crus only metres from the Grand cru Valmur, with another very small 0.4 hectare planting also at the crest of the hill of Grand Crus (just above Vaudesir) that the Moreau family have planted more recently.

Discreet but not imperceptible wood sets off ripe liqueur-like aromas of spiced pear, acacia blossom and moderate Chablis typicity. There is excellent richness and mid-palate density to the relatively powerful mineral-driven flavors that deliver fine length on the sappy bitter lemon-inflected finale. This delicious effort could use better depth so a few years of keeping should be beneficial. Drink through 2030+.

The 2022 Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru is definitely a step up from the Vaudésir: more mineralité and terroir expression, a greater sense of nascent energy. The palate is tensile with a leesy entry, white stone fruit, a little peachier on the finish than I recollect from barrel. Fine length. This is a Blanchot that should age with style. Drink 2025-2045.

One and a half barrels, in wood until now but will finish in wine globes. Fresh pale yellow, a light note from the oak, but well integrated, with perhaps a little warmth at the back. The white flowers are present but a bit subdued at the moment. This should all come together though. Acidity is fine. Drink from 2028-2038.

The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc was picked from August 28 to September 6 at 45hL/ha. It’s a blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Sémillon. This has wonderful purity on the nose, revealing scents of lime, green apple and crushed stone—one of the most precise I have encountered at this early stage. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity that lends this white Pessac-Léognan superb focus. There’s real intensity here, building with a sense of nascent confidence toward the mineral, almost slate-like finish. Very long and tender, this is a white Domaine de Chevalier from the top drawer. Drink 2028-2050.

The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is one of the best dry whites of the year. Creamy and expansive, with terrific brightness, this exudes balance. Citrus confit, white pepper, mint, almond, pear and crushed rocks are some of the notes that build as the 2023 shows off its pedigree. I expect it will offer exceptional drinking for the next several decades. What else is new? Drink 2030-2053.

This is layered and complex with an impressive mineral tension and depth. Medium- to full-bodied, very long and persistent. It has oyster shell, crushed stone and citrus peel character with racy acidity coming through, adding to its length and tension. Very long and firm at the end with a backbone of fine tannins for a white. 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon.

Ripe citrus, honeyed flowers, mint, and a kiss of background oak all define the 2023 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc, a beautifully textured, medium-bodied white that has terrific mid-palate depth and richness, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's clearly up with the crème de la crème and has the vintage's mix of richness and freshness.

If you have a vintage with a heatwave, you can count on this estate to outperform, and it did again in 2023, with wine marked by refined aromas of wet stone, lemongrass, verbena, fresh herb, lime, quince and kiwi. This kaleidoscope of aromas and flavours is encapsulated in a smooth and vivacious palate that remains precise and with exciting precision through to a long finish. The somewhat high alcohol is balanced by the acidity as the team picked to attain ripeness, while not doing any malolactic fermentation to preserve freshness. Drink 2026 - 2045.

Juicy lemons, white flowers, pomelo, green apples, and a hint of pineapples crowd into the perfume. The palate is packed with ripe, sweet, creamy, yellow citrus, green apples, honeysuckle , crushed stones, and vanilla-tinted orange rinds. You can enjoy this in its youth, or age it for more complexity. Either way, it is a treat. The wine blends 70% Sauvignon Blanc with 30% Semillon, 14% ABV, 3.21 pH. The harvest took place August 28 - September 6. Drink from 2026-2037.

Ripe if decidedly cool aromas are more classic in style with nuances of Granny Smith apple, mineral reduction, petrol and more spice wisps. The super-sleek, dense and gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors are akin to rolling tiny rocks around the mouth on the balanced and impressively long finale. This is quite firm but not especially austere though it could use better depth. Drink through 2032+.

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a slightly more appley, linear and stonier bouquet than the more comely Folatières. You could argue the aromatics deliver more typicité. The palate is well-balanced, crisp and taut, with plenty of crushed stone character and more complexity towards the finish. This Puligny carries intellectual weight and should age well in bottle. Vaccelli's Granit Blanc is a selection of 100% Vermentinu vines 26 years old on average, sitting at the highest part on the hill facing the sea. This aspect lends a gentle salinity to the complex range of lemon and yellow stone fruit flavours, driven long on the palate with wet stone mineral streak. Quartz Blanc is one of the few blends produced by Vaccelli, using a mix of four white grape varieties native to Corsica: Carcaghjolu Bianco, Riminese, Ghjenuvese and Cudiverta. A relatively new wine in the range, the vines for Quartz were planted in 2013 on sandy granitic soils. Quartz displays a harmonious balance between the fleshy citrus and green fruit, supported by white florals, honey, and a sappy bitter spice finish. Layered over this profile is a hint of curry leaf and wisps of smoke normally associated with premium Jura Savagnin.

Domaine de Villaine, nestled in the village of Bouzeron in the Côte Chalonnaise, is renowned for crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines. Founded by Aubert de Villaine, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, the estate focuses on organic viticulture and minimal intervention, producing standout expressions of Aligoté Doré, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Aubert de Villaine handed over management to his nephew Pierre de Benoist in 2000, with Pierre passionate about rediscovering the identity of the Côte Chalonnaise as a whole and of Bouzeron in particular. These wines embody purity, precision, and a deep respect for Burgundy’s traditions.

This reference Aligoté is riper in 2022 than it often is and lacks the bright acidity typical in cooler years such as 2021. However, it provides a moreish choice for refreshing current drinking, with alluring aromas of ripe green apple, apricot and nectarines.
