A background application of wood frames ripe and fresh white-fleshed fruit aromas that exhibit a whisper of exotic character. The attractively textured and fleshy flavors possess very good length if only average depth on the ever-so-mildly warm finish. Note that this very forward effort should also drink well young.

The 2017 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes Blanc had seen no sulfur dioxide between the vintage and September 2018, as Liger-Belair believes in letting the wine get quite oxidative before bringing it back to a more reductive state later in its élevage. Offering up aromas of waxy lemon rind, bruised apples and honeycomb, the wine is medium to full-bodied, textural and phenolic, with chewy structuring extract and a long, mouthwatering finish.

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Grands Vignes Blanc 1er Cru, matured in around 28% new oak, has an attractive bouquet with scents of brioche, honey and yellow flowers plus a hint of custard creams in the background. The palate is well balanced with a creamy opening, a little low in acidity compared to recent vintages, but displays fine purity toward the finish. Drink over the next decade.

Domaine du Nozay at Sainte Gemme on the northern edge of the Sancerre Appellation was established from scratch by Philippe de Benoist, whose brother-in-law is Aubert de Villaine, co-owner of the famous Burgundy house, Domaine de la Romanee Conti. With a generally greener flavour profile and showing more restraint the Sauvignon Blancs of Sancerre are a complete contrast in style to their pungent and exuberant New Zealand counterparts.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a slight tinge of green to the edgings and a watery hue. Notions of lime and green apple are overlaid by fresh herb notes followed by light scents of herbaceous grassy characters and wet stone. Nicely balanced with an elegant rounded mouthfeel the palate has flavours of limes, fresh herb infusions and citrus over wet stone characters and a subtle grassiness. Finishes dry with fresh acidity and an aftertaste of lime, fresh herbs, citrus, subtle grassy asparagus and stony mineral characters.

Domaine Pegau Cuvee A Tempo is made from a blend of equal parts, Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne. The wine comes from parcels that are farmed using 100% organic farming techniques, and made its debut with the 2014 vintage. Vinification and ageing is performed in a combination of French oak barrels, stainless steel tanks and cement egg shaped vats. The production is quite small, with about 100 cases being produced in total each year.

Bright yellow straw colour with tinges of pale gold around the outskirts and a pale straw hue. Aromas of ripe apricot and peach meld into subtle honeycomb, lemon butter, crème brulee and cinnamon notes. Rich, full and creamy in the mouth yet showing plenty of focus, luscious apricot, peach and honeysuckle flavours overlay bees wax, crème brulee, light butterscotch and spicy cinnamon characters. Finishes with great freshness. Understated in its power with a long spicy aftertaste. Give it at least a few more years to build further in the bottle.

There are 1,200 bottles of the 2017 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc Cuvée A Tempo, which was made in a combination of barriques and concrete egg. Equal parts Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, it's less toasty than the 2018, with crisp, focused citrus notes and tremendous length on the finish. It should drink well for a decade or more.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (Aug 2019)

The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée A Tempo is more Burgundian, with less overt concentration but more salty minerality as well as a more focused, chiseled style on the palate. Beautiful white flowers, stone fruits, salty minerality, and spice notes all define the nose, and it’s concentrated, structured, and incredibly long on the palate. This is a brilliant, concentrated, incredibly Burgundian styled white from this estate that’s going to keep for 2-3 decades. Both 2017 and 2018 Cuvée A Tempo are brilliant wines, and which you prefer will depend more on your stylistic preference than any difference in quality between the wines.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a watery hue. Fresh peach, apricot and pear fruits engulf the nostrils followed by notions of honeysuckle, light quince, traces of cinnamon and spice. Intense and vibrant in its feel, delightful pear, fresh apricot and white peach fruits possess a wonderful freshness. Subtle elements of honeysuckle, citrus and spicy quince sit underneath. Vibrant acidity carries the fresh fruits leading into a long, lively and richly fruited finish. Will build texture and put on weight with bottle age.

Pegau's 2019 Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc Cuvée Réservée is almost Burgundian in character, the way it balances upfront generosity with mouthwatering length. The flavors are different, offering hints of crushed stone, underripe pineapple, white peach and dried spices, then this medium to full-bodied wine adds vaguely chalky textural elements on the long finish. Silky and streamlined, it does a wonderful job of preserving freshness throughout.

They have been farming this En Barbi parcel since 2012. It is a south-facing plot, sheltered from the winds due to its location at the end of an amphitheatre of hills around it. Its southerly exposure accounts for its early and complete maturation at harvest time. The soil is silty clay over grey marls, resulting in excellent drainage and low risk of hydric stress. En Barbi was replanted by the previous farmer and the vines are approximately 15 years old. For several years, they have been vinifying En Barbi separately from the other Chardonnay plots. In 2016, they decided to bottle approximately 300 magnums of En Barbi Chardonnay. From 2018 they released En Barbi Chardonnay worldwide in bottles and magnums. In 2019, because of the low yields, ageing was in 350-litre and 500-litre barrels only.

This smells rather different from the Grand Curoulet Chardonnay, still salty but now also more creamy. Ripe citrus and a light floral note is deceptively soft and gentle, with just a hint of oak spice but minerally spice too, like crushed rocks. On the palate, this is a little more rounded than the Grand Curoulet Chardonnay, filling the mouth with a lovely combination of roundness and stony freshness and spice. Incredibly fresh on the finish, as if the cloak of richness were pulled back at the end to reveal the spine. Very long. Magnificently building and persisting in the mouth. Powerful and elegant. Drink 2022 - 2032.

This cuvée has existed since the beginning of Domaine du Pélican, in 2012. The Chardonnay cuvée is made from several different parcels of vineyards located in Arbois and Montigny-lès-Arsures. In addition, they produce two single-vineyard Chardonnays (En Barbi and Grand Curoulet). The vineyards sit mostly on hilltops, over marly soils. Their elevation is the highest of the estate (close to 400 m). One vineyard is on the west-facing slope of the Revermont and is covered with fallen rocks (éboulis calcaires) of Bajocian limestone. Age of the vines is between 10 and 45 years. The grapes are lightly crushed and then immediately pressed. Fermentation takes place in barrels and foudres. Élevage is in 350- and 500-litre barrels (of which 10% are new oak) for about 50% of the crop. The balance is in foudres.

Full bottle 1,290 g. Very pale gold. A light leesy note, with a sour citrus freshness, spice in extreme moderation, and a whiff of fresh pears. Super-crisp acidity, intense lemon and grapefruit and powerful salty-sour freshness. On the long finish, here's a surprising depth and richness and a tiny hint of struck match suggesting reduction, but it is very slight. Wonderfully pure, direct and mouth-watering. So much more than Chardonnay. Drink 2021 - 2025.

Savagnin ouillé, sometimes called Traminer, or Fleur de Savagnin, is the topped-up version of Savagnin, one that Domaine du Pélican has been producing since 2012. In Jura, the most common use of Savagnin is for oxidative wines (sous voile), either vin jaune (which requires more than 6 years in barrel under flor), or simply Savagnin (2 to 5 years in barrel under flor). This cuvée is made of many different parcels located in Arbois and Montigny-lès-Arsures. The soils are very diverse: multi-coloured marls; fallen limestone rocks (éboulis calcaires) over grey marls; and marly limestone. The grapes are lightly crushed before being pressed, and fermentation is in foudres and barrels. One-third of the crop macerates with the skins for one night before being pressed. Ageing is in 500-litre barrels with 20% new oak for just over half of the crop. The balance is in foudre and vats.

Complex mix of fruit aromas from tart citrus to more exotic notes as well as a more green herbal side. A little bit salty and stony/mineral too. On the palate, creamy, smooth and mouth-filling, yet with fabulous and vibrant acidity. Taut and dry but not lean or mean thanks to those fruit flavours. Long, creamy finish without any sweetness other than fruit flavour and no obvious oak. May well age a lot longer. Drink 2021 - 2026.

Domaine du Pélican are based in Montigny-les-Arsures near Arbois in the Jura and was started in 2012 by Guillaume d’Angerville of Domaine Marquis d’Angerville in Volnay, Burgundy, and François Duvivier, régisseur at Domaine Marquis d’Angerville. The Domaine farms high quality terroirs located in and around the city of Arbois. The plots are among Jura’s finest, the very best being En Barbi and Grand Curoulet. Terroirs here are a mix of marly clay and gravels with varying exposures from north to south, are even more complex than in Burgundy. Whilst a broadly Burgundian approach is employed to wine-making, there is no doubting the individuality and Jurassien personality of the wines. The d’Angerville approach in the cellar has always been light-touch, one which is toned down even more for Domaine du Pélican, little new oak is used and élévage is shorter, lasting twelve months as opposed to eighteen in Volnay. Tanks and foudres are employed for ageing the reds, 500 litre casks for the Savagnin and traditional Burgundian barriques for the Chardonnay. The whites are both “topped up” as opposed to the more common oxidative Jura method.

The 2018 Arbois Chardonnay En Barbi races out of the glass with a stunning display of energy and mineral-drenched energy. Lemon oil, white flowers, almond, chamomile and crushed rocks are some of the many notes that infuse the 2018 with tons of character. Ample and yet sculpted, the 2018 is a wine of total class. In this lineup, the En Barbi is marked by a brilliant aromatic upper register. In a word: dazzling!

Riper than the Grand Curoulet, fuller in the mouth, but more herbal too and a little bit spicy. This has a terrific combination of depth and mouth-watering freshness as well as great persistence. A definite fruit sweetness on the nose and then marked freshness and saltiness on the long, long finish.

The 2018 Arbois Savagnin Oiullé is fabulous. It presents a beguiling mélange of dried apricot, white flowers, crushed flowers, marzipan, sage and chamomile. The savory profile works so well with the wine’s oily, textured feel, while a hint of reduction adds character. Even with all of its obvious exotic character, the 2018 retains more than enough freshness and minerality to give the wine a real feeling of vibrancy that is impossible to miss. Quite frankly, this is an eye-opening wine.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has a slightly creamy, frangipane-tinged bouquet. It's well-defined, though perhaps it needs a little more terroir and mineralité to come through. The 2020 becomes quite feisty with aeration. The palate is well-balanced with a slightly tangy entry, fresh and vibrant with a killer line of acidity. Citrus-fresh towards the finish with just a touch of blood orange, it reveals a very sustained aftertaste matched with a salinity that beckons another sip. 60-year-old vines deliver plenty of richness, but there is also a very fresh side here, with a lemony fruit, a mineral edge and a hint of smoke - very 'Puligny'. The texture recalls the density of a Meursault with the crisp nature of a typical Puligny and it's a charming balance. Dujac farms a parcel of 0.62ha in Puligny Combettes near the border with Meursault. The grapes are lightly crushed and fermented in cask (20% new), where it will stay for 16 months (with a further six in tank). Drink 2025 - 2040.

This is a larger parcel (1.16ha) than Combettes and fairly high on the slope, however the youthful vines here give a wine that is easy and forward, with ripe apple and pear fruit, a suggestion of marzipan, plus a touch of honey. The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru contains around two-thirds young vines and one-third 20- to 30-year-old vines. It has a pleasant green apple and orange pith bouquet, although it lacks the penetration of the 2017 tasted a year earlier. The palate is taut and fresh, with citrus lemon and a lovely saline note that defines the final half. Not an overly complex Folatières, but it will give pleasure over the next decade, possibly more.

There is a whiff of the exotic in the form of pineapple wisps that combine with notes of acacia blossom and various white-fleshed fruit aromas. The lush and opulent yet relatively refined medium-bodied flavors possess slightly better mid-palate density, all wrapped in a youthfully austere but not quite as dry finale. This isn't classically styled but there's clearly more here.

Pale lemon, the nose is quite high class, and suggests some depth of fruit, the right weight on the palate, an attractive lime infused tang, good persistence, balanced and attractive.

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes reveals attractive aromas of pear, orange oil, toasted hazelnuts and pastry cream. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a richer, more textural and more concentrated profile than the Folatières, differences of both site and vine age being at play here.

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has quite an intense bouquet with orange sorbet, mint and green apples, well-defined and powerful. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with a smack of sea salt, good acidity with an almost Meursault-like finish that lingers in the mouth. Maybe not a Les Combettes of immense longevity, but there is breeding here.

Here too there is a vague suggestion of the exotic to the aromas nut oil, pear liqueur and floral nuances that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is better density still to the delicious flavors that also culminate in a dry and firm but not really austere finish that is a bit more complex.

Domaine Duroché is one of the brightest stars to appear in the Burgundy landscape over recent years, and with numerous comparisons to Domaine Rousseau the wines are now incredibly hard to come by. While the name is relatively new to the world, the family have been making wine in Gevrey Chambertin since 1953, and early on they aquired fantastic plots of Gevrey villages, premier cru and Grand Cru including Chambertin Clos de Beze. The wines are incredibly pure, have excellent concentration and depth, and show a fantastic translation of site.

While Pierre Duroché is known for his red wines, he's also rather adept at whites as evidenced with this Bourgogne Cote d'Or Chardonnay. Fruit for this wine comes from the lieu dit of Grands Champs in Gevrey-Chambertin that was planted between 2003-2005. This is an attractive and pure Chardonnay that will drink well early in its life.

There is a lactic hint to the lightly reduced nose so I would recommend giving this some air first. There is excellent density and intensity to the middleweight flavors that conclude in a chiseled, youthfully austere and lemony finish. This is awkward but I suspect that the recent bottling has upset the balance and my rating offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink through 2026+.

The 2021 Bourgogne Blanc has a more pithy nose than its peers, with touches of wild peach and candle wax complementing the malic scents. Ripe yet fresh and cool aromas include those of petrol, various white orchard fruit and a whiff of citrus rind plus a hint of acacia blossom. There is excellent intensity to the attractively textured medium-bodied flavors that deliver very fine length on the compact and much more structured finale. The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Enseigneres has a brisk, stony bouquet with hints of pressed white flowers and chai tea. Pale lemon colour nothing much showing up front on the nose, feels like optimum ripeness. Certainly, the fruit builds very well on the plate with a little sucrosity, then waves of white fruit behind. Plenty to enjoy here in this Chassagne made on white wine soil. Good length.

Classic aromas of ripe apple, hazelnut and butter - it's a bit of a fat boy. Yet, it should definitely please fans of rich white Burgundy. An overtly floral mix reflects notes of acacia, lilac and rose petal while exhibiting additional notes of spiced pear and apple compote. Bursting with aromas of citrus zest, smoke, fresh peach and white flowers, Sauzet's 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts is medium to full-bodied, satiny and vibrant, its textural attack segueing into a delicately fleshy mid-palate, before concluding with a chalky finish.

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru comes from two parcels totaling 0.70 hectares, on deeper, more clayey soils than other crus. It has a strict and quite correct bouquet, very focused and stoic at the moment, with flinty, petrichor aromas reluctantly emerging from the glass. The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Perrières 1er Cru comes from a single plot that touches Les Referts, the vines around 45 years old. This has a little more richness on the nose with candle wax/resin aromas joining the malic fruit, perhaps even a little "Chassagne" in style. The palate is well balanced with, again, a little more depth and weight than the other Premier Crus from Sauzet, though it does not quite display the same nervosité on the finish. I commend the spiciness on the aftertaste, but I hope this will develop more tension by the time of bottling.

A little pale lemon colour, the nose is weighty but not quite so fresh as Referts. Intense on the palate, it’s the wood which has not quite integrated so well: apparently this is usual at this stage. There is good acidity here with a low pH but the whole has not yet found its harmony.

A more floral-inflected nose reflects notes of pear and apple compote that is laced with soft spice and lemon zest hints. This is aromatically similar to the La Garenne but with even more citrus influence. The palate impression of the medium-bodied flavors is not quite as tension-filled but there is a bit more mid-palate fat, all wrapped in a bone dry and slightly more complex finale. Citrus and fresh apricot aromas, along with a floral element that I did not find in the smoky, reduced Garenne, which was going through a closed phase and was impossible to assess with confidence. Pale, bright, green-tinged yellow. Vibrant scents of citrus fruits and white flowers. Silky, broad and refined, with its classic dryness leavened by an element of orchard fruit sweetness. Finishes dry, pure and persistent, with lingering notes of flowers and spices and the acidity, backbone and grip to support mid-term aging. This is always a rather broad, low-pH wine in this collection of premier crus. Incidentally, the estate is starting to replant some vines from the 1960s that are no longer very productive, according to Benoît Riffault.

A more restrained and more floral nose reflects notes of white peach, pear and acacia blossom. There is better detail and excellent punch to the attractively delineated medium-bodied flavors that possess better mid-palate density, all wrapped in an agreeably dry, focused and well-balanced finish. Lovely.

Benoît Riffault's 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Village is already open and expressive on the nose, wafting from the glass with aromas of ripe lemons, Anjou pear, nutmeg, dried white flowers and warm bread. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a satiny attack, excellent amplitude and concentration at the core, ripe acids and a long, expansive finish. This is quite a powerful example of the vintage, but don't let its youthful precocity deceive, as it has the structure and substance to evolve gracefully in the cellar.

Good aromatic lift to the aromas of fresh apricot and butter. A step up in density and balance from the village Chassagne-Montrachet but weightless and stylish. Stone fruit flavors are lifted by a subtle floral topnote. Finishes shapely, dry and persistent, with very good cut. Should make a classic, harmonious village wine.

The beautifully layered and markedly-floral inflected nose features notes of ripe white orchard fruit and citrus elements that are framed by suggestions of petrol, matchstick and a whiff of wood. The generously proportioned and extremely rich full-bodied flavors are opulent but not heavy as there is ample acid support to maintain the balance on the powerful, sappy and tension-filled finish that also just goes on and on. I really like the depth and this should age effortlessly for years.

The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has also turned out brilliantly, mingling notes of peach, pear and honeycomb with nuances of beeswax, warm bread and orange oil. Full-bodied, multidimensional and textural, it's a powerful, muscular wine that's concentrated and satiny without being unctuous, balanced by racy acids. Long and penetrating, this is worth a special effort to seek out.

Pale straw-yellow. Deeper-pitched on the nose than the Bienvenue, offering scents of yellow fruits, earth and clove; one can smell the flesh here. Very rich, tactile and smooth, conveying a strong impression of dry extract to its yellow orchard fruit and spice flavors. The wine's greater thickness of texture is leavened by firm supporting acidity. With its serious weight and structural underpinning, this slightly saline wine will need several years of bottle aging. The yield here was about 40 hectoliters per hectare, according to Benoît Riffault.

An almost Chablis-like nose combines notes of quinine, petrol and matchstick with those of cool citrus and soft floral wisps. The racy and equally well-detailed flavors possess almost painful intensity before concluding in a chiseled and beautifully persistent finish. This firmly structured effort will need to add depth to merit the upper end of my predicted range.

Unfurling in the glass with aromas of wheat toast, crisp green orchard fruit, white peach and subtle hints of nutmeg, as well as a touch of youthful struck match, Sauzet's 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne is medium to full-bodied, satiny but incisive, with a lively but envelopingly textural profile, excellent concentration and tension at the core, and a long, delicately chalky finish. This saw a very judicious 25% new wood and is shaping up to be one of the finest renditions of this cuvée that I've tasted.

Hints of resin and matchstick can be found on the mildly exotic nose of various white orchard fruit, mandarin orange and passion fruit scents. The delicious and impressively complex flavors are not especially dense but they do deliver fine length on the vibrant, firm and solidly persistent finish. This is sufficiently structured to reward mid-term cellaring and overall, it's a fine Chassagne villages.

Light straw-yellow. Subtle, pure aromas of white peach and white flowers. Supple, dry wine with pear and lemon zest flavors supported by firm acidity. More about power than refinement, though, and in need of a bit more mid-palate stuffing to support its alcohol. This wine was not made in 2016.

Coche's Bourgogne Blanc hails from seven parcels of beautifully situated vines owned by the estate all within Meursault just below the village. This wine is whole bunch pressed then raised in a 3000 litre foudre before being moved back to stainless steel for 6 months in tank and bottled with no fining or filtration in January after a total of 16 months on lees.
