2022 Domaine Billaud-Simon Les Clos Chablis Grand CruChablis, FRANCE$360. 00Bottle$4320.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
Generous though not overwhelming wood influence fights somewhat with the spicy aromas of acacia blossom, wet stone and oyster shell wisps. There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate concentration to the broad-shouldered flavors that brim with minerality that is particularly apparent on the compact, youthfully austere and equally built-to-age finish. Like the Vaudésir, this needs to develop better depth and to integrate its wood treatment so moderate patience is advised. Drink through 2032+.
91-93 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Les Clos id just as backward as the Vaudésir, but presents a different profile. Mid yellow, with not much yet showing on the nose. A little bit of oak here, as much juicy as dry white fruit, with a super sense of balance. Quietly biding its time Drink from 2028-2038.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThe 2022 is the first vintage to come from Billaud-Simon's plot replanted in 2018 and not harvested until now, at the eastern end of Les Clos adjacent to Blanchot. Half was matured in wood, but Bailly comments: 'Les Clos will consume the wood easily.' Great drive – amazing for just five-year-old vines. Layers of flavour with great purity. Will be worth following this as the vines gain additional age. Drink 2025-2034.

This is also admirably pure and exuberantly floral with its combination of spice and citrus scents that exhibit very good Chablis typicity. There is more volume and richness, as well as notably more power if not the same refinement, to the larger-scaled flavors that deliver excellent length on the firm, austere and bitter lemon rind finish. As is usually true for Les Clos, this is very much built on its minerality and is a wine that should also reward up to a decade of keeping. Drink through 2029+.
92-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is aged only in vat, although there might be some wood contact late on. Frankly, I hope it doesn't because this has a sense of fullness and some lovely tropical notes discretely interwoven that would make any oak otiose. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, not amazingly complex, but there is decent substance on the finish. Fine. Drink 2025-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousThe domaine has one plot of young vines, which were frozen, so grapes were found as an exchange with another. Two barrels in exchange for Montée de Tonnerre. In steel at the moment but may switch one to wood later. Pale colour, extremely promising even if not yet offering much detail. Superb follow through, growing in the mouth, excellent length here and some marine notes to finish. Very youthful but I am expecting something exciting. Drink from 2027-2033.

Moderate wood influence surrounds ripe aromas of green fruit, citrus rind, ocean breeze and discreet nuances of mineral reduction. The round and rich, indeed even plush, medium weight plus flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract while displaying impressive power on the youthfully austere and long if slightly woody finale. In the context of the 2021 vintage, this is a big, even robust, wine that isn't elegant, but it certainly doesn't lack for personality. Drink through 2028+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Chablis Bougros Grand Cru comes from purchase of juice and represents a couple of barrels (half actually aged in steel). The nose is well defined with fine delineation - hints of white peach and pear emerging. The palate is well balanced, that oak a tad pronounced at the moment, though it will be integrated with time. Fine persistence, this will probably be difficult to find but should give 12-15 years drinking pleasure. Drink 2025-2040.

A slightly riper array of mineral reduction, essence of poached pear and acacia blossom is nuanced by plenty of typical Chablis elements. The sleek, delicious and solidly dense medium weight flavors also possess good minerality and refinement, all wrapped in an intensely saline-inflected finish that is also borderline painfully intense. This lovely effort is built to repay up to a decade of aging though it should be approachable after only 5-ish years. Drink through 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Chablis Les Blanchots Grand Cru has a well balanced bouquet with touches of Granny Smith apples, gooseberry, flint and a touch of citrus lemon. Like several of these 2021s post-bottling, there is sufficient reduction and wood influence to push the underlying fruit to the background for now. Otherwise, the sleek, intense and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the slightly clipped and short finish that, as the description suggests, isn't entirely harmonious today. Given how well this showed from barrel, and given the obvious quality of its stablemates, I suspect that it will better harmonize with a few years of bottle aging and my rating offers the benefit of the doubt that it will in time. Drink through 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet and perhaps is the most complete of the Grand Crus from the Domaine. A pure and notably more elegant nose offers up its aromas of pear, apple, spice, white flower, iodine and a hint of oyster shell. There is first-rate delineation to the gorgeously textured, even delicate, flavors that exhibit fine cut on the markedly dry, lemony and youthfully austere finale. Subtle but discernible wood blends with ripe yet cool aromas of overtly floral lemon-lime, quinine and oyster shell .The sleek, intense and powerful big-bodied flavors manage to retain a highly appealing refinement along with plenty of minerality that seems to build from the mid-palate to the bitter lemon suffused finale. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. The oak barrel underpins this Chablis but doesn't obscure the terroir expression, though I would still afford it 12–18 months in bottle. Drink 2022 - 2029.

Neal Martin - VinousA cuvée made from the best plots, then given a longer elevage with 15% in (mostly older) barrels. Excellent density of yellow fruit, the wood is well hidden, more sucrosity, more length, this just needs more time compared to the regular Chablis.

Established in 1980 by Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard, Domaine Blain-Gagnard has quickly become one of the benchmarks of Chassagne-Montrachet. The domaine owns just over 8 hectares of vines, with enviable holdings in some of the village’s most renowned premier crus and three grands crus. Winemaking is firmly traditional, favouring minimal intervention, modest use of new oak, and a style that emphasises clarity and precision. These are wines prized for their balance and transparency to site.
One of the most highly regarded sites in Chassagne, Caillerets lies on the mid-slope with thin, stony soils that deliver wines of notable finesse and tension. Blain-Gagnard's example is consistently elegant, chiselled, and long-lived.

A more elegant nose is comprised by notes of the essence of spiced pear, apple and an array of floral elements. Here too the mouthfeel is succulent and seductive with a bit more mid-palate density along with much more evident minerality on the impressively long and well-balanced finale. In contrast to the prior wines which could be reasonably approached young, this is sufficiently compact as to need at least 5 years first. Lovely. Drink through 2031+.

Enough wood to comment on sets off the borderline exotic aromas of orange peel, white peach, exotic tea and a hint of pineapple. The rich and very generous medium-bodied flavors once again brim with sappy dry extract where an evident bead of minerality adds a sense of lift to the very dry finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This has the stuffing to age but is sufficiently pliant to be enjoyable young as well. Drink through 2028+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundRound, complete and marvellous, yet does not lack the pleasant tension that carries it to the next level. The nose features a combination of citrus and tropical fruit that reflects the nature of Caillerets as a 'millefeuille de calcaire' in the words of Jean-Marc Blain. This is relatively firmly reduced so if you're tempted to try a bottle young, be sure to give it some air first. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comprised just three barrels in this vintage, which is three more than most growers. It was picked on 21 August. There is wonderful tension on the nose with scents of lanolin and fern, beautifully defined and vibrant. The palate is very complex with touches of ginger complementing the citrus fruit, building all the time in the glass and fanning out on the finish. Excellent. Drink 2025-2050.

Neal Martin - VinousThis is marvellous. Blain crushes the grapes lightly and avoids sulphur until after malo. His way of working produces this subtle, elegant wine with notes of ripe pear touched with acacia blossom, a touch of smoke and his trademark minerality. The texture is dense but never heavy, and the wine lingers elegantly on the finish. Blain explains the difference between Bâtard and Criot, just across the street: Bâtard has deep clay, while Criots has a stonier soil and one always senses the minerality. Drink 2022 - 2035.

Ripe but not really exotic aromas are comprised by notes of both white and yellow fruit, herbal tea, just sliced citrus and a hint of lemon zest. The sleeker and bigger-bodied flavors pack plenty of punch and power on the more complex if decidedly compact and very tightly wound finale. Although the nose is a bit closed, the wine opens up nicely on the palate, with a very buttery and rich fruit character that is totally typical of Bâtard. From three parcels, each with two types of soil, the 2014 Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru has a fresh limestone, flinty bouquet that is well defined and focused, though needs bottle age to muster more intensity. The palate is crisp and taut on the entry, with just a touch of bitter lemon and Clementine; it demonstrates more weight and precision towards the finish, with fresh lime lingering on the tensile finish. This is my pick from the domaine out of barrel and could even have the audacity to surpass Jean-Marc Blain's Montrachet.

Neal Martin - Robert Parker Wine Advocate #222 (Dec 2015)Somewhat unusually this actually seems slightly riper than the Criots which is not typically the case with its expressive nose that is comprised mostly by various white orchard fruit, floral, citrus and soft wood nuances. They are the largest owner of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, this includes prized plots such as Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Chambertin, Bonnes Mares, and Meursault Perrieres.
Founded in 1731, the subsequent nine generations of the Bouchard family has amassed an impressive 130ha of vineyards, including nearly 100 separate climats. It's perhaps this large size, contrasting the current trend for tiny producers with a cult following that has meant Bouchard are not front and centre in the minds of many Burgundy drinkers. A true shame as Bouchard are making some of the best wines in their history.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyBouchard is the owner of two parcels of Genevrières that total 2.65 ha: 1.65ha on the thin soils of the steeper part of the slope that gives a more mineral result, and another hectare below that in deeper soils. The combination produces a classic Meursault with a ripe apple fruit, notes of butter and hazelnut, and a rich, dense structure but always (even in 2020) a pleasantly saline minerality. Drink 2023 - 2040.

An elegant, airy and cool nose reflects notes of mineral reduction, citrus confit, apple and anise wisps. The racy, intense and overtly mineral-driven flavors are not quite as dense, but they do offer excellent length on the slightly firmer and more austere finale. This is going to need a few years to flesh out as it's presently quite compact and tightly wound. Drink from 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières is excellent, exhibiting citrus, crisp orchard fruit, wet stones, freshly baked bread and praline. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with a tangy spine of acidity and a long, saline finish, it's a tensile, penetrating wine that shows considerable promise.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has a detailed nose with citrus fruit and flint aromas unfolding in the glass. This has a "steady" feel to it, aromatics that don’t wish to create too much of a fuss. The palate is balanced with good weight, fine acidity, quite saline but like other Perrieres, it is missing a bit of tension and mineralité on the finish. Drink 2024-2035.

Neal Martin - VinousAlthough still a bit tightly wound, this is a wonderful example of this famous 1er Cru. Great Amalfi-lemon fruit here. Concentrated and very elegant, with intense, chalky minerality, this is super-focused and very precise. Really stony finish with pronounced salinity that's so exciting and mouthwatering. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comPale lemon colour. Here the bouquet is the most backward of the Meursault 1ers crus, but the wine builds beautifully on the palate, gaining in flesh and with a powerful underlying stoniness. Discreet but fine with significant intensity and a saline touch at the finish.

Moderately firm reduction overshadows the underlying fruit at present. Otherwise there is very good volume to the nicely concentrated and more finely textured middle weight flavors that brim with minerality on the youthfully austere and lemon zest-inflected finale that isn't quite as structured. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundOffering up notes of pear, white flowers, toasted almonds and beeswax, Bouchard's 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, with a more tightly wound, introverted profile than the Charmes that preceded it. Built to age, this is a serious Genevrières that I look forward to tasting from bottle.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)A blend of two parcels, the 2019 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru was the first to be picked by Bouchard in this appellation. The well-defined bouquet features touches of lemon thyme, walnut and smoke. The palate is balanced with fine acidity, fresh and focused. The pretty, apricot-tinged finish fans out wonderfully and leaves residues of grilled almond and sesame on the aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2023-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousTwo plots in the upper part, picked separately. Pale yellow. The bouquet is very striking with its verbena and juniper nose, plenty of energy here. Big shoulders, some warmth, but it holds it in, with excellent length. Ripe pear notes on the palate. This will all come together.

Spicy and notably ripe yet fresh aromas of petrol, white peach and plenty of floral elements give way to slightly finer though less concentrated flavors that possess focused power and evident minerality on the compact, youthfully austere and more structured finale that flashes huge length. While qualitatively quite similar, the two wines offer distinctly different personalities. Drink 2034+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAromas of white flowers, fresh peach, toasted bread, mandarin oil and pastry cream introduce Bouchard's 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, layered and multidimensional wine that's deep and concentrated, with racy acids, terrific mid-palate amplitude and a long, saline finish. Broad shouldered and powerful without being at all overbearing, it's an exemplary rendition of this celebrated site.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru has a complex bouquet of crushed chalk, mirabelle, apricot and light vanilla pod aromas, plus just a touch of white chocolate in the background. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite powerful and very well defined. Orange zest, mandarin and lemon thyme notes feature on a very long finish that fans out extremely well. Superb. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Neal Martin - VinousThis is still a bit closed on the nose, but on the palate it is rippling with ripe-apricot and orange character. Dense and rich, almost to the point of being unctuous, although this is properly dry. Serious tannin structure behind the lavish exterior, which, together with the fresh acidity, keeps this on course through the very generous finish. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comClear fresh lemon and lime colour. The nose is magisterial. There is a little light coconut even though only 20% new wood is used. Very distinguished though, and restrained. So smooth throughout the palate with excellent lifted citrus fruit acidity, waves of white fruit flavour course across the palate, a little essence of pear, but no feeling of undue heat.

2019 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$1099. 00Bottle$13188.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Discreet but perceptible wood sets off the vaguely exotic aromas of white peach, melon, acacia blossom and plenty of spice wisps. There is even better volume and mid-palate density to the rich but racy flavors that brim with sappy dry extract on the intensely stony, balanced and built-to-age finale. At least some patience will be necessary but like the Corton-Charlemagne, this will be reasonably approachable earlier than usual if desired. Drink 2031+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundBouchard's 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru confirms its fine showing last year, unwinding in the glass with scents of pear, citrus oil and toasted bread, complemented by hints of nutmeg, praline and white flowers. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's satiny and incisive, with terrific depth at the core, chalky structuring extract, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. This is as compelling an infant Chevalier as I can remember tasting at this address, and it should enjoy a brilliant future. Drink 2029 - 2055.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 2021)The usual blend of the four terraces, the 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet featuring delicate scents of yellow plum, citrus fruit, flint and smoke. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Quite taut on the entry, and a fine saline undertow enlivens the finish. A classically styled Chevalier, though I would like to see more mineralité. Drink 2023 - 2045.

Neal Martin - VinousIts really hard to imagine how a white Brugundy could be more flinty and minerally than this super-concentrated and super-vibrant Chevalier Montrachet. Lovely aromas of lemon blossom, jasmine, tangerine and nectarine, alongside all the stony stuff. Then comes the staggeringly long finish that is totally pure and precise. From Bouchard’s 2.3-hectare holding, which comprises almost a third of the entire Grand Cru site. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comFour terrasses together, mid yellow, some white fruit, some power, wait and see. The palate brings out all the Chevalier character with a few little touches of mandarin, very clean long white fruit finish, manages the heat of the year very well.

Once again, the nose is firmly reduced though it seems clear that the underlying fruit is ripe. The plump, round and succulent larger-scaled flavors possess much better density and impressive power on the saline and beautifully long finish. This isn't as precise and chiseled as it usually is though there is still much to like as it should be reasonably approachable on the younger side. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundRich and demonstrative, the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru wafts from the glass with aromas of orchard fruits, peach, nutmeg, orange oil and fresh bread. Full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it's deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and a long, saline finish. This is an unusually broad-shouldered but beautifully balanced Corton-Charlemagne from Bouchard. Drink 2025 - 2055.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 2021)This has quite pronounced vanilla oak, but has only just been bottled. As it aerates, notes of ripe pear, citrus and pineapple develop. Rich and creamy, this makes a bold statement, but also has lovely freshness that complements the generous body. Keeps pumping out the flavors for a long time at the finish. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comGrown on marl with yellow notes, but only a narrow band above the calcaire de Corton. Pale lemon and lime colour. The nose is powerful, but backward in detail. A huge mouthful with controlled flesh alongside an intense limestone backbone, some pebbles in the background, very long finish. Impressive.
