La Combe; a tiny hamlet above the village of Rotalier is home to the larger-than-life “Fan Fan” Jean-François Ganevat. Jean-François came back to run the family estate in 1998 after ten years working Burgundy and he combines his passion for the Jura terroir – here ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - with a staunch defence of Burgundian techniques; low yields and most recently biodynamic methods for which he has now gained Demeter certification.

In addition to the ‘Estate’ wines there are, since 2013, a group of wines made from grapes purchased from around the region and in others, all are grown by their vigneron friends to their standards, so organic or bio-dynamically farmed and tended. They pay very high prices to get the quality they want. Each of these necogiant wine are made on the property by Jean-François and his small team; from grapes into wine, and have the same Ganevat precision, levity and exquisite texture despite the differing origins of the grapes.

La Graviere is 100% Jura Chardonnay from a great parcel of old vines planted on grey marne du lias near Lavigny, fermented and aged in demi-muid (600 litre) barrels for a year. As always natural yeasts only are used, with no filtration and no additions.

Antonelli San Marco is a 190-hectare estate acquired by the Antonelli family in 1881, making it one of the historic wineries in the Montefalco DOCG region. The estate cultivates indigenous varieties like Trebbiano Spoletin, Grechetto, Sangiovese, and places a significant emphasis on Sagrantino.
Grechetto is the primary white varietal in Umbria, and the production of Colli Martani DOC mandates 100% Grechetto. Hand-picked grapes are pressed, fermented, and matured on lees in stainless steel tanks before bottling.

The 2022 Montefalco Grechetto opens in the glass with mint leaves, dusty florals and hints of crushed green apple forming a delicate bouquet. It's round and pleasantly sweet with crisp white pit fruit and spices as saline-tinged minerals add a salty edge toward the close. It finishes crisply refreshing and perfumed, leaving slowly tapering hints of sour melon and savory spice. Vividly fruity but then savory and spicy through the close, it's a total pleasure to taste. Drink 2023 - 2026.

The cooler 2018 resulted in 15% lower average temperatures in the Aconcagua Costa zone. The 2018 Chardonnay Aconcagua Costa was produced with grapes that saw a slow ripening to full flavors while keeping moderate alcohol and very high levels of acidity. The vineyards are 12 kilometers away from the Pacific Ocean and have a strong marine influence. It fermented with native yeasts in oak barrels, with only 40% of the wine going through malolactic fermentation. It matured in second and third use French oak barrels for 11 months. It's very clean, with a mixture if citrus, herbs and flowers, and it's aromatic without excess, with a medium to full-bodied palate with some restraint but not lacking volume. There is nice balance and freshness, and it ends with a salty twist. Drink 2020-2024.

Arboleda' is the premium tier in the Eduardo Chadwick family of wines. The fruit for the Chardonnay is sourced from their Chilhue vineyard –a 1047 hectare property of rolling hills located just 12km from the Pacific Ocean which experiences similar conditions to that of Marlborough in New Zealand making it ideal for growing cool climate grape varieties.

Arboleda's Chardonnays have excelled delivering intense flavours and rich textures. This is their best yet.

Fermentation took place in French oak barrels, 6% of which were new with the balance in second and third use barrels. A portion of the wine remained on its lees for 10 months to enhance the wines textural qualities and add complexity. 35% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. ‘Arboleda’s Chardonnays have excelled delivering intense flavours and rich textures. ’

Brilliant pale straw colour with straw greenish tinged edges and watery hue. The bouquet is quite alluring with its lifted aromatic profile of ripe white peach, cashew, butterscotch and light honeycomb followed by some spice end notes. Excellent varietal character. The palate features wonderful intensity and textural qualities with rich generous flavours of ripe peach, creamy cashew, honeycomb and spicy butterscotch. Clean finish with a very creamy almost luscious mouthfeel. Long ripe peach, honeycomb, cashew and spice aftertaste.

Bio-dynamic viticulture is practiced in the vineyards, and the goal is to highlight each individual terroir and realise each vineyard sites potential.

Clos de la Rue is sourced from a 2 ha south facing site planted half 1965 and half 1990 on sandy silt over limestone. Vinification occurs with indigenous yeast 50% in aged foudres and 50% in barrel (35% new) and aged for 2 years on fine lees. Here the wine shows virtually no impact from the extended oak ageing or the new oak, such is the strength of the fruit it shows excellent integration and comfortably rides above the elevage.

The 2017 Saumur Brézé Clos de la Rue is deep, intense and fresh yet also pure, refined and wonderfully fruity on the complex and authentic nose that exhibits ripe white fruit aromas intertwined with notes of brioche and chalk. Lean, lush and finessed but also intense and with a persistent purity and mineral structure, this is an impressively light yet tight and sustainable Chenin with a stimulating chalky purity with lemon fruits and lingering salinity. A fabulous, lean and straight Brézé! Tasted over 14 days in April 2021. Drink 2021 - 2036.

Bio-dynamic viticulture is practiced in the vineyards, and the goal is to highlight each individual terroir and realise each vineyard sites potential.

Clos David is 100% Chenin Blanc from a 1.3 ha north-east facing site planted in 1965 on medium sandy silt over limestone. Grapes are whole-bunch pressed, the free-run juice is fermented with natural yeast in 50% in foudres and 50% in barrel (2-3 year-old), and matured on fine lees for 12 months. Blended and further matured in tank for six months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

    Other Reviews....
From a limestone monopole covered by loamy sand and born in a late vintage with a slow-ripening maturity, the barrel-fermented, straw-yellow colored 2016 Saumur Brézé Clos David offers a deep, chalky, fresh and complex nose of ripe pears and apples as well as tropical fruits intermixed with spicy-elegant mineral, even flinty aromas of crushed stones. Intense, round and juicy on the silky-textured palate, this is a dry, medium to full-bodied, very elegant and firmly structured Chenin with fine yet lively acidity, delicate tannins and a food-friendly bitterness on the dense, long and promising, salty finish. Very persistent aftertaste. Aged for 12 months in two- and three-year-old barriques, this is a deep, dark and powerful yet very juicy Chenin from Brézé that needs time to develop its promising talents. Tasted in February 2019. Drink 2022 - 2033.

From vines averaging 70 year old on about 30cm of clay over limestone. Vinified with indigenous yeast after separating free run and press juices and aged on fine lees for 12 months in a combination of older foudres and barrels. The wine is then returned to tank for another 8 months of ageing on fine lees. This is deep and complex with a touch of noble reduction giving more than a nod to Burgundy in terms of texture and structure.

This balance creates ideal conditions for white varietals like Pinot Grigio.

Grillo is a grape variety native to Sicily which traditionally was used for the production of Marsala. It’s a late ripening varietal, typically grown on bush vines, and needs a warm to hot climate to prosper – it is therefore no surprise that it has thrived on the sundrenched hills of Sicily for over 2000 years. More recently its potential for creating refreshing dry whites bursting with flavour has come to the fore.
