Regularly one of the standout dry white wines from the Bordeaux appellation, the 2021 Blanc, a blend of 73% Sauvignon (picked on the 9th, 11th and 13th of September) and 27% Sémillon (picked on the 7th of September), offers up a fresh, delicate and elegant bouquet with aromas of lemon oil, lemon, spices, lime tree leaves, menthol and perfectly ripe orchard fruits. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and racy, it's layered and seamless, its concentrated core of fruit framed by racy acids and a calcareous, saline finish. Drink 2024 - 2034.

The 2021 Les Champs Libres is one of the best editions of this wine yet. Rich and explosive, with tremendous dimension, the 2021 screams with character. Pear, white flowers, slate, mint and a kiss of French oak all race out of the glass. The 2021 is fabulous. I would be thrilled to own it. Drink 2023-2031.

All Sauvignon Blanc, the 2021 Les Champs Libres Blanc is another sensational wine from this team, which is just about unrivaled in Bordeaux. Ripe melon, honeyed flowers, lime zest, and a liquid rock-like minerality all define this beauty, and it's medium-bodied, with flawlessly integrated acidity, beautiful mid-palate depth, and a great finish. Give it a few years. Drink after 2026.

Creamy herbs, green and red apples, oranges and truffles. Very hard to tell the grape variety from the nose. Filling and fleshy, bright and smooth, mouthwatering and fresh, succulent and just so enjoyable. Gorgeous density yet lightness, you get a ton of lemon and lime, green apple and soft bitter orange elements with saline undertones and a sense of energy and direction. It's a mouthful but leaves no trace of heaviness. Again, where the reds truly shine is the nuance at the end, and this has that. A few minutes later you're still tasting all the nuances and makes you think this is an excellent white Bordeaux. Refreshing, tangy, moreish and clean. Fabulous. Drink 2024 - 2035.

The Les Champs Libres 2018 Blanc is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre sélection massale clones, produced by the very talented Guinaudeau family (of Chateau Lafleur fame). It offers up a beguiling nose of lemon drops, lime blossoms, struck flint and fresh grapefruit with hints of mandarin peel and coriander seed. The elegant, refreshing, medium-bodied palate has an electric line of intense citrus flavors with tons of mineral sparks, finishing long and perfumed. This is absolutely a wine without peer in Bordeaux (anywhere!), and I love it! Drink 2022-2032.

    Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (Apr 01, 2021)

The 2018 Les Champs Libres is a powerful, phenolic white of real substance. White flowers, citrus, chamomile, sage and light tropical notes all open in the glass, but it is the tactile feel of Les Champs Libres that leaves the deepest impression. Here, too, there is a touch of reduction, but all the elements are so finely put together. Drink 2023-2030.

Aromas of dried apples, lemon zest, green papaya, herbs and toasted almonds. It’s full-bodied with tangy acidity. Exciting citrus zest, stones and wild herbs on the long finish. This needs time to come around with such acid and phenolic tension. Try after 2023.

The 2018 Guinaudeau Vignerons Les Champs Libres Blanc is 100% Sauvignon from clay and limestone soils. It was vinified in new barrels and spent 5 months on lees. A beautiful, tight, concentrated white, it offers lots of tart lemon, white grapefruit, honeyed lime, and sappy flower-like nuances as well as a brilliant chalky mineral component that emerges with time in the glass. Despite the new barrels, it doesn't show a hint of oak and is medium-bodied, with bright acidity and a great finish. It's going to benefit from a year or three of bottle age and will keep for 10-15 years, if you're so inclined. Drink 2021-2036.

This is brilliant, so flavourful with so much persistency and fully embraces the slate texture. I always love this wine, and it stands out even more than usual in this vintage because so many whites have missed this gathering of pace and clear minerality. Massal selection from Sancerre estates. The 2022 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc was cropped at 18hL/ha between 24 August and 1 September, aged in 50% new oak. Pressed dried flowers on the nose, scents of dandelion and yellow plum, a touch of fennel coming through with time. The palate is well balanced with a pithy opening, nutty and smoky in style, good depth with that nutty finish offering noticeable salinity. Very fine. Drink 2027-2050.

Very sophisticated and structured yet weightless and agile, with a finesse, precision and length that is so wonderful. So precise and complex with vivid acidity and length. Such clarity. Really excited about this one.

    James Suckling

Up with the crème de la crème, the 2022 Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc is based on 76% Sauvignon Blanc and 24% Sémillon, all of which is still aging in 50% new French oak. It has an incredible bouquet of honeyed citrus, grapefruit, and flowers to go with medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It’s concentrated, has a great texture, nicely integrated acidity, and a brilliant finish. Yields here were a miniscule 18 hectoliters per hectare, and the Grand Vin is a selection of only 44% of the total production.

Herbal and aromatic on the nose, expressive and engaging. Full, round and energetic, a lovely frame and texture to this, lovely licks of lemon, grapefruit, pear, apricot, some bitter lemon rind giving accents and a gorgeous persistence, not so vibrant, but there's underlying acidity that keeps the lift and it's so well controlled and confident. Really feels very precise and delineated, polished and structured, still with some spice giving some tension but this is really lovely. Complete and characterful. A yield of 18hl/ha. Drink 2023 - 2030.

Flowers, white chocolate, pineapple, spice, papaya, white peach, and orange scents are easy to pick up on the nose. On the palate, the wine is fresh, sweet, and fruity leaving you with creamy yellow citrus, grapefruit and white peach notes. The wine blends 76% Sauvignon Blanc with 24% Semillon. The harvest took place August 24 - September 1. 14.56% ABV, pH3.29. Drink from 2025-2032.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2021 Olivier Blanc has a crisp, stony bouquet with freshly-sliced pear, Granny Smiths and orange blossom. The palate is well-balanced with crisp acidity, citrus fresh with admirable cohesion. Perhaps it needs a little more mineralité on the finish, nevertheless this is a very well-made dry white that will not only drink well for at least a decade, but might represent one of the appellation's best values. Drink 2026 - 2040.

The 2021 Olivier Blanc is a bold, flavorful Sauvignon Blanc-driven white. Lemon peel, sage, mint and tomato leaf give this grassy, vibrant white tons of character. Drink 2022 - 2027.

Fragrant white flowers on the nose with sweet lemon scents; this smells lovely. Succulent and just shy of unctuous, it has a nice density and weight on the palate, giving a full mouthfeel and good dose of bitter lemon, sweet pineapple, crisp apple and creamy peach. Round and driving, this has energy and zing and excellent balance from start to finish. Lovely and will be very enjoyable in bottle! Drinking Window 2025 - 2035.

The 2021 Pape Clément Blanc shows the tension and cut that this vintage could bring to dry white Bordeaux. Exhibiting aromas of gooseberries, nectarine, confit citrus and pastry cream, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy but incisive, with a textural attack and a bright, saline finish. It's a blend of 72% Sauvignon Blanc, only 22% Sémillon, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 1% Muscadelle.
    93-94 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2021 Pape Clément Blanc offers lovely creaminess and richness, but in the more restrained, mid-weight style that has characterized these wines of late. Ripe pear, tangerine oil, passionfruit, mint and jasmine open with a bit of time in the glass. The 2021 is promising. Tasted three times. Drink 2025-2036.
    92-95 points
    Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2021 Pape Clément Blanc was picked from 8-23 September and offers fragrant white flowers and peach skin on the nose, more minerality than the Clementin, gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced, perhaps tauter than recent vintages with a fine spine of acidity, a dab of stem ginger and lemongrass towards the finish. The 30% Sémillon just lends a bit of umami here, and it should age well in bottle. Drink 2024-2039.

Serious and refined with dried lemon, pineapple, green apple, almond, gun flint and some aniseed. Bright and tight. Medium to full body. Fresh and alluring. Wait and see.
    96-97 points
    James Suckling

The 2021 Château Pape Clément Blanc is certainly in the running for the white of the vintage. Based on 70% Sauvignon and 30% Semillon brought up in just 18% new oak, it has bright, racy acidity that's beautifully balanced by a rock-solid core of fruit and mid-palate density. Giving up notes of pineapple, tart peach, white chocolate, and ample minerality, it will warrant 2-4 years of bottle age, but it's impressive anyway you look at it.
    95-97 points
    Jeb Dunnuck

Creamy, fresh and bright, with lemons, lime and green apples and just a hint of spice, this is going to be perfect for consumption over the next few years. In fact, you can enjoy this refreshing wine on release! Drink from 2023-2027.

Excellent clarity and precision, you can feel this has been well worked with a vibrancy and tension running through the apple, apricot and fleshy peach fruit with some creamy patisserie edges. I love the lick of sherbet that lingers on the tongue and the persisting zestines. Fully flavoured and confident with some lemon drop and crushed stone salty minerality on the finish. A blend of 72% Sauvignon Blanc, 22% Sémillon, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 1% Muscadelle. Tasted twice. Drinking Window 2024 - 2040.

The 2022 Pape Clement Blanc is a very pretty, exotic white. Drops of Muscadelle in the blend add a very pretty hint of jasmine and lime to play off the richer, riper flavors on the palate. The 2022 offers lovely density and creaminess, with plenty of orchard fruit, marzipan and chamomile flavors, yet also remains light on its feet and wonderfully fresh. Tasted three times. The purity of fruit is really impressive here with crushed apples, pears and lemons. Some mineral and stone, too. Honeysuckle. Very clear and bright. The palate is full and very direct and focused, with a long, salty dried lemon finish and minerality. Fine phenolics at the end. 63% sauvignon blanc, 35% semillon and 2% muscadelle.

The 2022 Château Pape Clément Blanc is another beauty from this team, and if it puts on some weight over the course of its élevage, it will merit an even higher score. Honeyed lychee, minty herbs, melon, and stone fruits define the bulk of the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with good concentration, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. I was able to taste this on multiple occasions with consistent notes.

Citrus kick straight away, great direction and focus - there's purity to the lemon, peach, green apple, pear and apricot fruit. Sharp and straight but stylish. Fruity and juicy, precise and detailed, a touch tense still but there's excellent sculpting here and lots of life. Quite bold, some toasted nuances putting the wood at the fore and narrowing some of the expression but there's so much to like with a long, spiced finish. Harvest 28 August to 2 September. Yield of 30hl/ha. Michel Rolland and Julien Viaud consultants. HVE3 and Bee friendly certified. Rolland & Associés consultants. Drink 2025 - 2036.

Pape Clement's 2020 Blanc leaps from the glass with gregarious notions of fresh pink grapefruit, Bosc pears and lime blossoms with hints of coriander seed, yuzu zest and white pepper. Enjoyably concentrated and intense, highly spiced as are many of the Sauternes wines in this vintage due to small yields, which gives focus and a welcome edge of bitterness to the exuberant nectarine, pineapple and fresh fig flavours. Silky texture. Vincent Labagère director.

Being owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (of Lafite fame) has been a boon for Chateau Rieussec. Since taking over the property in 1984, the planted vineyard area has increased from nearly 40 hectares to roughly 90 hectares today. Investment has also been made in the cellars, and the winemaking team are now better placed to work with the multiple small lots stemming from various parcels and picking runs through the vineyard. The vineyard is planted to 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc, and 3% Muscadelle, and the wines are aged in roughly 50% new French oak.

Pale lemon colored, the 2016 Rieussec comes sashaying out of the glass with a beautiful floral and citrus perfume of orange blossom, pink grapefruit, yuzu, lime leaves, lemongrass and fallen leaves with hints of nutmeg and candied ginger. Having shed a lot of the puppy fat from when I last tasted this from barrel, the palate reveals loads of elegant, tightly wound layers and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. So much botrytis on the nose with spice, dried mushrooms and nutmeg. Dried lemons and mangoes. Full-bodied and medium sweet with density and, at the same time, lightness. It has a rounded, sexy style ideal for drinking any time over the coming 15-20 years. The 2016 is a final blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. Drink 2019 - 2039.

    Bottle
    $1680.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

    Other Reviews....
Drink 2021 - 2050.

The 2016 Rieussec has plenty of botrytis on the nose, along with scents of honey, white peach, saffron, lanolin and walnut that gain intensity with aeration. The very well balanced palate presents a viscous opening and a fine bead of acidity. Generous and poised, with hints of marzipan and Turkish Delight decorating the finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drink 2023-2045.

So much botrytis on the nose with spice, dried mushrooms and nutmeg. Dried lemons and mangoes. Full-bodied and medium sweet with density and, at the same time, lightness. I like that it is full of botrytis on the palate at the beginning and then turns fruity and very pretty at the end with citrus and fruit. Balanced, creamy and rich.

A step up over the Carmes de Rieussec, the beautiful 2016 Château Rieussec has remarkable purity and freshness while still packing beautiful depth of fruit. Honeyed peach, apricot, flower oil, and even a hint of wet stone all emerge from this full-bodied, thick, opulent effort. I love it. It has a rounded, sexy style ideal for drinking any time over the coming 15-20 years. The 2016 is a final blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. Drink 2019 - 2039.

A great Sauternes with a wonderful brightness and freshness, this gathers speed through the palate, developing flavours of cinnamon, caramel, white pepper, clove and smoked pineapple, all wrapped in an extremely silky texture. It's still in barrel, and will be for another few months. Around 50% new oak.

A blend of 83% Semillon and 17% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2017 Rieussec is pale to medium lemon-gold colored. To begin, the nose blows you away with intense lemon tart, lime cordial, mango and quince notes followed by a second wave of floral, orange blossoms and honeysuckle scents, and then notes of crushed rocks, crème caramel and marzipan join the party. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is still very tightly wound with concentrated sweetness and a racy backbone to match, delivering layer upon layer of citrus and savory flavors, finishing on a persistent mineral note. Drink 2023 - 2057.

Still in barrel, the 2017 Rieussec is just as impressive as it was en primeur. Rich, ample and voluptuous, the 2017 has all the intensity that is so typical of Rieussec, but with the extra kick of freshness that is now such an emphasis here. Candied orange peel, crême brulée, vanillin, passion fruit and pineapple emerge from the glass. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. Drink 2022-2042.

Inspirational depth with botrytis spice, toffee, dried-apricot and sponge-cake character. Full-bodied, very sweet and lively with a long, endless finish. Lively acidity balances the wine. Tight and linear. Compact column of fruit and botrytis. Give it age. Better after 2026.

Getting a big “Wow” in my notes, the 2017 Chateau Rieussec is an extraordinary Sauternes that has everything. Awesome notes of orange zest, honeyed flowers, ripe pineapple, peach, and spice all soar from the glass, and this beauty is already complex, has full-bodied richness and power, a great mid-palate, and a beautiful spine of acidity. It's a brilliant, brilliant wine that can be enjoyed today or cellared for two decades or more. Drink 2020 - 2040.

An exceptional wine, this is just stuffed full of exotic fruits, layers of apricot, saffron, truffle and citrus, all powering through the palate with a mouthwatering finish. An early harvest - they finished picking in 2017 the same day that they started in 2018, and the crop showed unusually pure botrytis, needing less sorting than usual. Absolutely one to look out for. The 2023 Sigalas Rabaud is still taking shape in barrel, yet it possesses notable depth and textural richness, even in this somewhat unsettled state. I especially admire its dynamic energy and overall vibrancy. White peach, jasmine, spice, mint and exotic flowers all grace a Sauternes that is distinguished by its flavor concentration and complexity. Drink 2027-2043.

It appears likely that the 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc will overtake its 2019 counterpart as one of the most successful white wines this estate has produced to date, something that's especially impressive in the context of the vintage. Exhibiting aromas of linden, menthol, crisp orchard fruit and smoke, it’s medium to full-bodied, fleshy and crystalline, with racy acids and an unctuos mid-palate. Chalky structuring dry extract makes its presence felt on the long, mineral finish. This is a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sémillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris.

Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

The 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is airy, weightless and gracious. Citrus confit, mint, white pepper and tangerine oil and a kiss of French oak are all beautifully lifted. There’s lovely richness and texture but without the opulence of most warm, dry years. The 2022 will be a gorgeous wine at the dinner table. Drink 2025-2037.

This zooms over the palate from the minute you taste it with energetic acidity, grapefruit, pear, lemon and white peach character. Dried, candied lemon. Crushed stone, too. Medium-bodied with polish and class. 90% sauvignon blanc, 5% semillon and 5% sauvignon gris.

The flagship 2022 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a normal blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% each of Sauvignon Gris and Sémillon. Aged in 55% new French oak, it shines in the vintage and brings plenty of classic richness and depth while at the same time staying pure, clean, and balanced. Honeyed lemon, orange blossom, white flowers, and crushed stone all define the aromatics, and it has a beautiful mouthfeel that certainly brings the richness and depth of the vintage. This is another gem of a white from this incredible château.

Lovely perfumed notes, floral, intensely fruity with vanilla, elderflower, green apple, pear, peach and white blossom, expressive and aromatic. Succulent and juicy straight away, a real hit of citrus juice, sharp and intense, so lively and yet the texture is quite filling giving a well balanced mouthfeel. Calm but layered, you feel the precision of each aspect, the soft toasted notes, bitter grapefruit and lemon peel, crisp green apple and mineral salinity - each is carefully presented. It’s rich and has concentration but keeps the focus delivering a supremely drinkable and nuanced wine. I love the mineral tang and long length. You get the feeling of a large, warm vintage but the acidity and focus is there, so it doesn't end heavy. Lots to like here and one of the best whites of 2022. 3.2pH. Drink 2023 - 2037.

Honeysuckle, lemon rind, spice, crushed rocks, white peach, tangerine and vanilla deliver the complex aromatics. Fresh and creamy, with layers of sweet, yellow citrus, pineapple, and a breath of herbs on the backend, the wine shows promise. This is going to be simply fabulous on release. The harvest took place August 18 - September 2. The wine blends 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Semillon, and 5% Sauvignon Gris. ABV %14.5. Drink from 2025-2035.

A blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon, the 2022 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc is a solid effort, exhibiting aromas of peach, pear and smoke with flinty notes. Medium-bodied, charming and fleshy, it has racy acids, a delicate tannic sensation and a long, delicate core of fruit (lemon oil) with a penetrating finish.

The 2022 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc is a jewel of wine. Bright, focused and finely cut, the 2022 bristles with energy and tension. The blend is 80% Sauvignon and 20% Sémillon, done in a style that is all about energy. Citrus peel, almond, chamomile, dried flowers and herbs all race through to the finish. Drink 2025-2032.

I always seem to prefer this cuvée over the Les Hauts de Smith Blanc, and the 2022 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a solid step up. A blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon, it has beautiful melon, honeyed citrus, and floral aromatics. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, vibrant, yet still concentrated, balanced white that should have a decade of longevity.
    92-94 points

Creamy rich, lightly honeyed lemon and lime on the nose with peach and pear and floral scents. Round and ripe with a soft juiciness in the middle accented by a touch of sweet and sharp citrus and orchard fruit with a weighty, creamy, fatness at the end. A more gourmet take with an enjoyable unctuous element and general weight. Gentle, confident, rich but maintains definition, balance and focus. Compelling with a cool wet stone minerality on the finish that is so moreish. This will continue to age well and change with the Semillon taking on more body. 3.2pH. 50% new barrels. Drink 2023 - 2028.

A terrific wine, the 2021 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc wafts from the glass with aromas of confit citrus, crisp orchard fruit, nectarine and vanilla pod. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and textural, it's a racy, concentrated wine that concludes with a long, saline finish. It's a second wine that punches above its weight.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2021 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc dazzles with its crystalline precision and tension. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and white pepper all lend striking freshness and nuance throughout. Time in the glass brings out the wine's layers and natural concentration. Readers will find a taut, saline white full of character. Drink 2022-2029.

The 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc has a more generous nose than the Les Hauts de Smith Blanc thanks to the contribution of the 20% Sémillon. Yellow plum, dried pineapple and slithers of white peach feature on the nose. The palate is well balanced, taut and crisp, yet with real weight and depth. Lemongrass and stem ginger surface toward the finish. This punches well above its weight. A brilliant success and, frankly, within touching distance of the Grand Vin this vintage. Drink 2024-2040.

Both fresh and ripe with pleasing notes of green mangoes, papayas, limes and kiwi. Flint and shells, too. Medium-bodied with excellent tension and a textured finish. 80% sauvignon blanc and 20% semillon. From organically grown grapes.

Mostly Sauvignon yet blended with 20% Semillon, the 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a richer, deeper, more serious wine, with beautiful peach, crushed stone, green almond, and white flower-like aromas and flavors. It's medium-bodied, concentrated, and lengthy, and is unquestionably an outstanding white in the making.

White peach, flowers, lemon grass, mango and pomelo make the perfume. Bright, crisp, juicy and packed with the crunch of green apples and sweet yellow citrus, this is already easy to enjoy. The wine is produced from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Drink from 2023-2028.

Crunchy green apple, lime juice and some elderflower with really soft hints of honeyed brioche. Sharp yet soft, this has a good immediate presence of lemony, peach and apricot fruit and a creamy base which is given an energetic push by a lemon zest freshness. Gentle, softly round and driving, this feels refined and delicate, elegant with enough vibrancy and power to give a mouthful of wine with persistence. Very enjoyable. Drinking Window 2023 - 2030.

Possibly even better, and a remarkable white in the vintage, the 2022 Château Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes reveals a vivid gold hue as well as an already complex bouquet of bright citrus, caramelized limes, tart melon, and minty herbs. A blend of 55% Sémillon and 45% Sauvignon Blanc that's still resting in 30% new barrels, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, concentrated mouthfeel, and a great finish. The wine was made from 100% Semillon for only the third time in the history of the estate. Drink from 2025-2060.

The 2021 Valandraud Blanc is a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy wine bursting with aromas of orchard fruit, confit citrus and pastry cream. As ever, it's one of the fatter, more textural white wines produced in Bordeaux, even in this cooler vintage.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2021 Valandraud Blanc was picked September 7–20 and matured in 80% new oak. The nose is well defined and complex, featuring apple blossom, honeysuckle, white chocolate and white linen scents that gently unfold with time. The palate is fresh, vibrant, powerful and judiciously spiced, with a slight waxiness to the texture, and it fans out beautifully on the finish. Superb. Just 3,500 bottles produced. Drink 2027-2042.

The 2021 Valandraud Blanc is captivating. In most vintages, the Blanc is built on textural richness, but the 2021 has an airy quality that is so alluring. Orchard fruit, lemon confit, jasmine, white pepper and a discreet touch of oak are beautifully woven together. The Blanc remains gracious and light on its feet, with impeccable balance and tons of sheer class. I loved it. Drink 2026-2036.

A full-bodied, serious white with complex notes already of flint, crushed stones, white pears, white lavender, cedar, fennel and lemon grass. Mineral and subtly spicy finish. Structured. Nicely done.

    James Suckling

The Grand Vin 2021 Château Valandraud Blanc is mostly Sauvignon Gris but includes 30% Sauvignon Blanc and a splash of Semillon. Crushed stone, pineapple, and bright citrus give way to a medium-bodied, concentrated, incredibly pure, precise white displaying everything that makes this vintage so promising for the whites. As with all the whites here, it has a low pH, racy acidity, yet terrific mid-palate depth, beautiful balance, and a gorgeous finish. This will stand up to the best whites in the vintage.

Flowers, honeysuckle, vanilla, and yellow with orange citrus create the nose. On the palate, the wine cracks with bright, crisp, lemon peel, a touch of orange, spice, and pineapple. The finish balances between its opulent, flamboyant nature and its fresh, bright citrus side. The wine blends 50% Sauvignon Gris, 35% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Semillon. The harvest took place September 7 - September 20. Drink from 2023-2037.

Gorgeous nose, perfumed peach, pear and floral notes - so appealing and welcoming. Graceful and charming on the palate, this has depth of flavour with a lovely core of juicy white fruits with a steely saltiness giving it that push-pull of fruit and minerality. This has character - it's not a massively weighty wine but has precision and refinement, presenting the elements delicately but still with structure and frame. The flavours linger and they are all perfectly balanced. I love the shot of lemon, bitter orange and cool stone saline touches. Both the red and white grand vins are delicious and successful in 2021. Mosel, GERMANY
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 7.5%
    Closure: Cork

Clemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.

Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

2021 Marienburg Kabinett is clear, pure and intense on the reductive and slatey/saline nose. On the palate, this is a lush and round, salty, piquant and salivating Kabinett with ripe and lush fruit but a fruity rather than sweet finish. Bottled with more than 10.5 grams per liter of acidity and nearly 60 grams per liter of residual sugar. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Drink 2028 - 2060.

Here's the opportunity to get a GG-type dry riesling for a friendly price. The 2020er Riesling vom blauen Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from early pickings in the blue-slate sector (Fahrlay) of the Pündericher Marienburg. It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, pear, a hint of earthy spices, wet stone, floral elements, and smoke. The wine proves juicy rather than bone-dry on the palate, where riper flavors play with one’s senses. The finish is still slightly rough and backward. This wine now only needs a few years of patience to fully shine. It could then easily exceed our early high expectations especially as it reveals its superbly floral and fresh array of flavors. Drink 2024-2032.

Gigantically fresh, with a whole garden of fresh herbs, plus white peach and a touch of white currant. Great energy whipping it down the road on the sleek and focused palate. There must be quite some natural grape sweetness in here, but the acidity it so vibrant that you barely feel it. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

It’s not easy to prise apart the complex fragrance of the Marienburg Spätlese, suffice to say that herbal and mineral elements shape the first impression, with fine floral and fruity notes demanding a little more olfactory application. The taste of crunchy apple and zesty citrus fruit gets the juices flowing, sweet lemony acidity prolongs the sensory stimulation. More classic than avant-garde, traditionalists deserve to be pleased too.

Le Clos du Caillou was established in 1895 with the Vacheron family taking over in 1956, focusing on organic farming and planting vineyards. Now, the younger Vacheron generation is gradually assuming control, with guidance from Bruno Gaspard.
The Cotes du Rhone Blanc consists of 50% Grenache Blanc, 35% Viognier, and 15% Clairette, sourced from 40-50 year-old low yielding vines. Hand-picked fruit is carefully sorted, then gently pressed as whole bunches and left to settle overnight at 10°C. Afterward, they undergo cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks and age on fine lees for four months.
Bright pale straw colour with straw tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pear and ripe Jonathan apple mix with honeysuckle and ginger spice notes. Fleshy pear, apricot and honeysuckle flavours have a luscious feel and carry good textural volume. Notions of wet stone and subtle ginger lie underneath. Finishes dry with good freshness and a well rounded, gently spice conclusion.

Coming from the commune of Ronca in the heart of Garganega country, Monte Ronca is a creation of local specialist, Antonio Fattori, an acknowledged Soave-master. Most the fruit for wines comes from the hills to the north of this commune, a specific site called Monte Calvarino, which peaks at 680 m (the inactive volcano from which the wine takes its name). At this altitude, this beautiful cool site provides a perfect environment for a higher grade, single site Soave. The hills around Monte Calvarino (in comparative terms to the region in general) are particularly steep, and from a viticultural perspective, pose some challenges. But to Antonio, this is critical to capture depth of flavour and structure, as the best expressions of Soave are never found on the valley floor where it gets too warm. Here, the ancient volcanic soils impart a flinty minerality to the hand-harvested fruit, while in the cellar, lees stirring and subtle oak ageing and varying levels of appassimento add a rich texture and further complexity to the wine.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinctive greenish tinge to the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense pear, red apple and lime aromas engulf the nostrils with some wet stone and fresh herb notes also evident. Delicious juicy ripe pear and red apple fruits flood every corner of the mouth with some lime and wet stone characters lingering underneath. Boasting terrific concentration, volume and brisk acidity it finishes long, textured and incredibly moreish. A fantastic example of Soave.

The production of Vernaccia in the lower Valley of the Tirso in Sardinia, has its roots in very ancient times.  Maturation takes place in chestnut barrels which are oxygenated, and the wine develops a flor, a natural, native yeast growth which acts as a protective layer, while also imparting certain flavours and aromas to the wine. Sherry is also made with a similar production method, and the resulting wine is not unlike a full-bodied fino Sherry.
Bright amber colour with rose gold tinged edges. The nose offers up a fino sherry like aromatic profile lead by an assortment of nuts including hazelnut and almonds with some salty saline like notes also present. Well rounded and silken in its feel the palate is laden with hazelnut, roasted almond and salted cashew flavours. Finishes bone dry with a salty hazelnut aftertaste.

Pouilly Fumé and Sancerre are the global benchmarks for Sauvignon Blanc, and there is no bigger name or more highly regarded producer in the area than Domaine Didier Dagueneau. Now under the guidance of Didier's talented son Louis-Benjamin, the wines still follow his ethos that authentic Pouilly Fumé requires healthy fruit from low yielding, old vines to produce the purest, and most intense and vibrantly fresh wine. That's not to say these wines are typical of the appellation. Given the severely low yields and approach to élevage, Dagueneau wines emphasise a creamy texture rather than bracing acidity, and combine mineral flavours with exotic fruits to supreme effect.

Previously labelled as Blanc Fumé de Pouilly, now reborn as Blanc Etc… and looking better than ever. Generally speaking this is the most approachable wine in the range, and since Louis-Benjamin came aboard the wine is now far closer in quality and class to the other releases. While each of the other wine focus on a single soil type or terroir, Blanc etc… blends some young vine parcels on their Saint-Andelain hill with two parcels planted on flinty clay and limestone white clay soils nearby. It was fermented in a mix of new and three-four year old barrels and then matured in both wood and tank.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Blanc etc. is developing into a mellow style with the richness of the vintage showing. It is what the French would call gourmand and, close to three years after being harvested, has entered a delectable stage of its evolution. Yes, it's still young but has improved and opened up since tasting a year ago. It now offers baked apple, honey and pastry flavors while retaining freshness. It is long and concentrated with a firm sense of structure, doing the mouth equivalent of providing a firm, reassuring handshake, likely due to the clay-flint soils, which make up two-thirds of the blend. Drink 2023-2032.

In 2002 on his search to find a worthy source of grapes to produce sweet wines, Didier Dagueneau happened across a spectacular natural amphitheatre vineyard in Jurançon at the foot of the Pyrenees. With the vines in good shape and only minor changes needed for his farming techniques, Didier set about to produce wines that highlight the natural minerality of the soil along with his trademark balance and poise. While a sweet wine is also made from this vineyard (100% Petit Manseng), this sec (dry) release is incredibly rare and utilises all five of the permitted grapes for Jurançon. Regional heroes Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng are included, along with obscure local varieties Courbu, Lauzet, and Camarelet, the last of which is the rarest of the group and is the dominant varietal in the blend. Winemaking is similar to the Blanc etc… release with both cigar shaped barrels and steel tanks used for maturation.

Buisson Renard is a cool, mid-slope terroir on the southwest side of the Saint-Andelain slope, and the soils are a mixture of clay and flint. This was barrel fermented and aged in Dagueneau’s bespoke, cigar-shaped barrels (450 and 600 litres) which are designed to increase lees contact.

    Other Reviews....
Perhaps the most Sauvignon-esque of all the vintage, the 2020 Buisson Renard is richly aromatic with distinctive lime, elderflower, ginger and honeysuckle aromas. It is currently most appealing for its tension as if a strong muscle is being stretched taut. It has masses of concentration and curves in the right places with an attractive sense of bitterness on the long finish. This is even better than when I tasted it from tank last year. Pur Sang is a superstar in the Dagueneau cellar, and is widely considered one of the great white wines of the world. The close planted vineyard is situated about five kilometres north of Saint-Andelain, with a generous layer of flint and silica clay soils.

    Other Reviews....
Forget aromatic Sauvignon, the 2020 Pur Sang is clear, pure and restrained. An evident nutty note to this is likely derived from the 20-25% new oak employed for all the Dagueneau cuvées. The oak combines with ripe, white stone fruit and almond meal, which lingers on the taut, grippy finish, and reveals that this wine is still in its infancy. Drink 2023-2032.

For many, the aptly named Silex is the pinnacle not only in the Dagueneau range, but in all of Pouilly Fumé. Hailing from a north facing vineyard rich in flint soils, the emphasis with Silex is the pure mineral traits Pouilly Fumé is famous for, yet with intensity and focus dialled up to eleven. Silex can take a few years in the cellar to fully express the core of citrus fruit among the smoke and flint notes; however history has proven it is well worth the wait. Dagueneau's Silex is a class leading icon of the Loire Valley.

    Other Reviews....
While this was a warm season leading to richness in many wines from the region, the Silex 2020 shows ripe fruit, but there's no sense of being overblown. The fine line that races through many wines relying on flint-based parcels is there, carrying the nectarine and oak-derived vanilla flavors, but its influence never tips into austerity nor firmness. There's a sense of tenderness that runs through its core while remaining light in body. Drink 2023-2033.

In many ways the ultimate Dagueneau wine, Silex is super-mineral, pure and crystalline, and is typically driven, intense and very long-lived. Silex means flint and this wine is produced only from the flint-rich soils on the north-facing slopes of the hill of Saint-Andelain. The vines here mostly range between 35 and 65 years old, and yields are kept lower than most other vineyards. Silex is fermented and aged in the famed Dagueneau cigar-shaped barrels as well as other casks.

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 Pouilly Fumé Silex shows an initial tenderness, sitting quietly and not shouting that it's made it into your glass. This is a wine that has its act together, feeling integrated and balanced with plentiful concentration and a savory long finish. A delicate dill note, which is a characteristic of oaked Sauvignon peeks out amid the hush. Drink 2022-2034.

It was long Didier Dagueneau’s dream to make a great Sancerre from the legendary, chalky slopes of Chavignol. He was finally able to acquire a half-hectare site in the late 1990s, smack-bang in the middle of the renowned vineyard of Les Monts Damnés. He soon began planting it to his exacting specifications. This location is south-facing and extremely steep, with white soil packed with chalk. The historical name of the parcel or climat (within Monts Damnés) is Les Vignes Blanches. Dagueneau noted that in spite of the aspect, it is one of the cooler terroirs of Monts Damnés.

    Other Reviews....
The Dagueneau family has been making Sancerre off the steep slopes of the Monts Damnés since the early 2000s, and it's a rather different beast than their Pouilly-Fumés. The 2017 Le Mont Damné is incredibly pure and transparent with arrow-like precision, citrus and floral nuances and some nutty influence. Precise and refined, delivering glacial purity of fruit; the Kimmeridgian terroir gives this wine line, length and direction. The lengthy finish is scented with florals, citrus and spiced apples. Lip-smacking, no-holds-barred Sauvignon. Drink 2022 - 2034.

Pur Sang (French for thoroughbred) is a superstar in the Dagueaneau cellar, and is widely considered one of the great white wines of the world. It comes from a densely planted, 30 year old vineyard in Saint-Laurent-l’Abbaye called La Folie (the madness), hidden between two parcels of woodland about five kilometres north of Saint-Andelain. The vineyard is named for the local farmers, who thought Didier Dagueneau was mad when he purchased the land which was not a vineyard at the time and full of huge boulders. Back then it was not even registered as part of the Pouilly-Fumé AOC. It turns out that Didier had done his homework; not only was La Folie a historical Pouilly vineyard, but its vein of pure flint and Ludian silica clay (chaille roulées) as well as its gently sloping south/south-east exposure, made it potentially one of Pouilly’s finest.

    Other Reviews....
Sourced from a south-facing single vineyard on flint and clay over chalk, the 2018 Pur Sang is all white flowers and spiced apple pastry. Seemingly effortless and silken, its Sauvignon edges rounded out in barrels. It offers excellent concentration on the mid-palate, a line of acidity acting like a thread and holding the core together like a ball. Delectably textured, with a hint of tannic sensation holding the mouth gently on a lengthy conclusion that's drawn-out and precise. A complex, multifaceted wine. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Sourced from eight estate-owned vineyards within the Wairau Valley with vines on average 26 years old. The fruit is whole bunch pressed to tank for fermentation and matured on lees for 4 months before bottling.
Brilliant water like colour with a greenish tone to the edges. Leaping out of the glass are pungent scents of passionfruit, grapefruit and herbaceous gooseberries followed by some green apple, grassy asparagus and flinty mineral notes. Zesty passionfruit, lime and gooseberry fruits race across the intensely flavoured palate with some herbaceous grassy characters, green apple, subtle asparagus and mineral elements lying underneath. Finishes dry and crisp with a long zippy aftertaste.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

If you’d like to taste Sauvignon Blanc in its modern day glory, look no further. The Marlborough sunshine and pinpoint precision in the vineyard and winery is all found here. Sourced from estate fruit in the Wairau Valley you’ll find star fruit, passion blossom, juicy pineapple and guava. The abundance of fruit continues on the palate with an electric line of acidity and sea spray finish. The dryness of the wine takes elegance to another dimension. Sith purity and drive, this is a triumph of a vintage and its magic is captured in the bottle. Drink now with raw scallop ceviche.

The family owns 22 ha of vineyards made up of 30-year-old vines in Crozes-Hermitage that are planted on well-drained, flat alluvial plains between the Rhône and Isère Rivers and two small parcels of 12-year-old vines in St. Joseph planted on hard, granite slopes that produce a slightly fresher, easy-drinking wine. Total plantings include Syrah for reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for whites. The vines are farmed organically with traditional chemical-free vineyard management techniques, and all fruit is hand-harvested and respected based on its expressive terroir.

Alain Graillot’s white Crozes-Hermitage is a deliciously crunchy blend of 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, whole-bunch pressed and naturally fermented in 600-litre demi muids. The fruit comes from a 2.7-hectare plot on the deep alluvial soils of Pont-de-l’Isère. Maxime compensates for the richness of fruit (in particular from the Marsanne) by arresting the malo to maintain cut. He bottles under screwcap for the same reason.

This is also firmly reduced and revealing nothing save for a touch of wood toast. There is excellent density and power to the larger-scaled flavors that display the robustness typical of Clos du Cromin on the clean, dry and persistent finish that is borderline tannic. The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru sports a very subtle reduction on the nose and fine intensity, though I feel this will require some bottle age to really open up.
