    2018 Chateau Grand Village Blanc
    Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $66. 99
    Bottle
    $803.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Given they are under the same ownership of the Guinaudau family, Chateau Grand Village is often referred to as Chateau Lafleur’s second vineyard. The estate has been owned by the Guinaudau’s relatives for hundreds of years, however it was not until the year 2000 that they began to produce wine themselves from the property. Situated on the edge of the Fronsac region and classified as Bordeaux Superieur, the vineyard is planted to 79% Merlot and 21% Bouchets (Cabernet Franc). The terroir is similar to Saint Emilion with its mix of calcisol going down a foot or so to a bedrock mostly made up of asteria limestone. At Grand Village, they practice many of the same techniques employed at Lafleur, including pruning and de-budding adapted to each vine plant, crop thinning in summer and de-leafing. The grapes are picked by hand, followed by very careful sorting and selection. Grand Village also produces a white wine from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (85%) and Semillon (15%), from a 5 acre plot.

    Other Reviews....
The Grand Village 2018 Blanc is composed of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Sémillon. A little youthfully mute to begin, with swirling it offers delicate scents of lime leaves, chalk dust and wet pebbles over a core of lemongrass, fresh grapefruit and green apples. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled with savory accents to the intense citrus flavors and harmonious acidity, finishing long and chalky. Drink 2022-2029.

The 2018 Grand Village Blanc is bright and airy, with lovely creaminess and light tropical accents that are likely the result of the warm year. Lemon confit, lime, white flowers, mint and a touch of reduction round out this vibrant, wonderfully polished Blanc. Drink 2022-2028.

Green-apple, dried citrus-peel, lime, fennel and leek aromas. It’s medium-bodied with bright, tangy acidity and a waxy texture. Vibrant at the end. Drink now.

Another brilliant vintage for this cuvée, the 2018 Grand Village (Lafleur) Blanc checks in as 75% Sauvignon and 25% Sémillon that was vinified in a mix of stainless steel and barrels, 20% being new. The Sémillon brings another level of complexity, and this offers a terrific nose of honeyed lime, Meyer lemon, and grapefruit notes all pinned by a beautiful underlying earthy mineral-component that emerges with more time in the glass. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and textured, it has a bright spine of acidity, flawless balance, and a great finish. Ranking the top whites in the region, it's going to drink well for 10-15 years. Drink 2021 - 2036.

Ranked one step down the Sauternes appellation pyramid from the legendary Chateau d'Yquem is Chateau Guiraud. The wine is produced from certified organic vines with an average age of about 20-30 years old. The cepage is 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc. Ageing takes place in French oak for approximately 18 months.

The 2024 Guiraud is a bold, luscious Sauternes. Apricot jam, chamomile, passion fruit, spice and burnt sugar convey notable intensity to match the wine's creamy, ample feel. Guiraud is a rich, heady Sauternes, but all the elements are impeccably balanced. Drink 2029-2044.

This shows good concentration and sweetness with a light saline character to the dried pineapple, mangoes, honey and spices. Medium to full body with medium acidity and a long, round finish.

    James Suckling

Silky smooth on the palate, not as much fruit or acidity intensity as I was expecting, this is still a little compact and closed with a quiet aromatic expression. Opens up a little after a few minutes with orange zest, peach blossom, pear and quince alongside some toasted caramel and vanilla touches. Good quality but needs a bit more time to fully open. Drink 2027 - 2039.

Dark burnt orange gold, spiralling white flower aromatics, this is great quality, thoroughly enjoyable, subtle spiced cumin and tumeric, sweetly succulent apricot and nectarine juice without being heavy. 12.6 hl/ha yield, Sandrine Garbay estate director.

A certified organic Bordeaux blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 60% Semillon fermented in old Sauternes oak barrels and aged for 6 months on lees to give the wine more volume and textural appeal. The fruit is primarily sourced from a vineyard that was planted to Sauvignon Blanc by accident around 40 years ago. (For their Sauternes, Guiraud were after a Semillon-heavy cuvee - too much Sauvignon Blanc was not considered the right balance for a sweet wine). Instead of selling off the Sauvignon or re-planting, Guiraud decided to create a special dry white and the “G” was born.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle greenish tinge around the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of green apple and lime have a subtle herbaceous gooseberry overlay with hints of grassy asparagus characters and light pencil shaving notes also evident. Intensely flavoured and beautifully shaped, the palate features pear, lime and herbaceous gooseberry flavours over a back drop of delicate pencil shavings, grassy asparagus characters and spice. Great textural volume and crisp acidity rounding out to a long, dry and highly savoury conclusion.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

The 2023 Guiraud, now made by former Yquem winemaker Sandrine Garbay, has a rather reticent nose at first, opening with orange pith and pear aromas. It just needs a bit more intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with a tangy opening. It’s a little spicier than its peers—marmalade and stem ginger, with more peachiness toward the finish. It feels harmonious and poised, but I would wait until the aromatics open, so give it four to five years after bottling. Drink 2029-2055.

You really see the class and botrytis character here with clarity and focus. Notes of spice, mushroom powder, subtle apricot and honey. It’s medium-bodied, fresh and bright with nice sweetness at the end. A modern and precise Sauternes.

Vivid gold in colour, laced with white peach juice, grilled pear, stone fruits, lime juice, opulent but with sculpted lift and zest, this extends outwards and upwards through the palate, capturing the pleasure of 2023 sweet wines in Bordeaux. Has spice and character, gorgeously expressive even now, and will age with ease. Sandrine Garbay, long time winemaker of Yquem, is director at this 128ha estate, that has been farmed organically since 2011. Harvest began on September 27 and continued through to October 13.

The 2022 Giraud is very beautiful. In this vintage, Giraud is not quite as rich as it can be, and yet it still offers notable depth and nuance. Spice, ginger, orange confit and apricot jam open nicely in a mid-weight Giraud that shows terrific energy. Drink 2027-2047.

The first vintage with Sandrine Garaby, formerly of Chateau d'Yquem in charge is the winner you knew it would be. The wine is intense, rich, deep, and manages to balance its layers of roasted, ripe, and over ripe pineapples, mango, candied orange, vanilla, almond, and apricots perfectly. The fruits are slathered with honey, yet they retain that all important freshness as well. Drink from 2025-2050.

Bright golden straw colour with deep gold tinged edges. Intoxicating aromas of honeyed peaches and apricot carry a strong botrytis character with marmalade, toffee apple, sweet pineapple and spice notes ensuing. Rich, concentrated and voluminous, the incredibly luscious palate is drenched with a thick coating of honeyed apricot, peach and pineapple fruits. One of the top Sauternes in this report is the 2016 Château Guiraud, a brilliant wine from a more challenging vintage for the Sauternes region. Beautiful, powerful notes of sugared peach, blood orange, caramelized pineapple, and honey all give way to a full-bodied Sauternes that has loads of sweetness and richness, yet good acidity as well. It does everything right and will offer up incredible pleasure over the coming 25-30 years. Drink 2021-2051.

Many experts consider Chateau Haut Bergeron to be the best of the non classified Sauternes. Part of the secret of the success of Robert Lamothes and his sons Patrick and Herue is the terroir. The 28 hectare vineyard is split on such a way, that part of the vines are in Barsac, (next to Chateau Climens), part are at Preignac and a large slice next to Chateau d’Yquem. At one stage the label used to boast this fact, with the words 'CONTIGU d’YQUEM'. Son, Herue is a dedicated and passionate winemaker who ages wine in 25% to 50% new oak casks. The exact percentage depends upon the vintage conditions. The 2020 vintage comes replete with special packaging to celebrate 200 years of the Lamothe family being vignerons.
Brilliant pale gold core with golden tinged edges. Potent honey drenched ripe peach and apricot aromas mix with marmalade, dried pineapple and spice notes. Rich and lusciously textured, the palate features honeyed peach and apricot flavours alongside sweet ripe pineapple, marmalade and candied citrus characters. Outstanding power and depth finishing very long with ample freshness and mouth feel.

The 2023 La Louvière Blanc has a reticent nose at first, but it just takes a few swirls to reveal real complexity and mineralité. This is a nuanced La Louvière Blanc—less outgoing than say, the Olivier Blanc. The palate is fresh and vibrant with an electric line of acidity that cuts through the concentrated white fruit. Chamomile, herbal, with lime aspects. A smooth, even creamy, palate with breadth and energy as well, showing off white peach and clementine orange, with agreeable toasty oak accents (the wine is ageing in 30% new oak barrels of 500 litres). Long finish, frank and a bit tart, but in a nice way. Ageing will make this a sure winner and the wine has the needed acidity and dry extract for more long-term keeping. Drink 2025 - 2038.

Chateau La Tour Blanche takes its name from the founder of the estate, Jean Saint Marc du Latourblanche, and is one of the most respected producers in Sauternes. The 40 hectares of vines used for their grand vin are planted in one large parcel with a prime location close to the Ceron river, and the soils are a mix of gravel, clay, sand, and limestone. Planted here is a combination of 83% Semillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc, and an unusually high proportion of Muscadelle at 5%. The Semillon is aged in 35% new, French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months, while the Sauvignon Blanc and the Muscadelle are aged for 16-18 months in stainless steel vats before blending and bottling.

    2019 Chateau La Tour Blanche

    $125. 00
    Bottle
    $1500.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 La Tour Blanche has an open, well-defined, slightly Germanic bouquet that gains more intensity with aeration. Just a slight smokiness develops in the glass. The palate is very detailed with fine mineralité, taut and focused, real grip and weight with a persistent finish. This is a classy Sauternes, beautifully crafted and destined to age with aplomb in bottle. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drink 2028-2060.

Appealing nose of dried mangoes, figs, chamomile, honey, marmalade and ginger. It’s creamy, sweet and luscious, yet fresh. Lovely mango character. Drink or hold.

Another beautiful wine from this estate, the 2019 La Tour Blanche has a medium-gold hue as well as a classic Sauternes bouquet of honeyed peach, white flowers, ginger, and tangerines. Rich and medium to full-bodied, it displays a terrific balance between its sweetness and acidity, a great mid-palate, and certainly no shortage of length on the finish.

White pear, peach and green apple on the nose alongside some candied lemon notes. This is clean and pure with excellent acidity. Quite expressive and pronounced flavours of sherbet lemon, bright and zesty, with some caramel notes and burnt orange bitter edges. I like the overall feel, it's well balanced and fresh with real clarity. One that is more approachable right now. Drink 2027 - 2045.

Since new owners took over at Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey in 2014 it has undergone a complete renovation of the cellars and winemaking facilities, along with a decrease in yields to ensure only the best grapes go into their top label. Their renewed attention to detail is also evident in the new bottle design, introduced from the 2013 vintage and featuring a smart engraved logo. The 41 hectare vineyard is planted on clay over limestone soils, with a varietal mix of 93% Semillon, 6% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has a very fragrant, floral bouquet with pure botrytised fruit, wonderful delineation and sense of mineralité. The palate is smooth and sensual, dried honey and quince, lightly spiced with a gentle crescendo on its polished and long finish. This is a very strong follow-up to the 2021. Drink 2028-2052.

Another mind-blowing Sauternes with dense and concentrated fruit, and incredible depth and power. Spices galore. Very sweet. 260 grams residual sugar. Twice the normal year. French TBA? 95% semillon and 5% sauvignon blanc.

Ripe, very ripe, and over ripe pineapples, mangos, candied oranges, apricot, flowers, honey, and marmalade create the intoxicating perfume. Perfectly perched between its decadently, sweet side, and its raciness on the other side, this is sublime. The roasted passion fruits, mangos, apricots, pineapple, roasted cashews, and saffron on the palate are all slathered with honey. This has the potential to be a future legendary sweet wine. If this is your thing, grab it as only 1,200 cases were produced. It is going to be stunning on release. But if you prefer your sweet wines with age, this will evolve for 3 or more decades. The wine blends 95% Semillon with 5% Sauvignon Blanc. Drink from 2025-2055.

The 2006 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is worthy follow-up to the 2005 and just as good. The bouquet is a soaring success, featuring wild honey, quince, saffron, flakes of white chocolate and pineapple chunks – more fun and more engaging than the stately 2005. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely viscous texture, a fine bead of acidity and a very cohesive mandarin and grapefruit finish. This has always been on an upward curve and comes recommended given reasonable market prices. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at home. Drink 2019-2045.

The wine starts lively, almost fresh. Only after a while in the mouth do you taste the intense richness underneath. The structure is of pear skins, with white fig and sweet dried apricot syrup. The botrytis, dry at the heart of the wine, gives the whole ensemble great balance.

Regularly one of the standout dry white wines from the Bordeaux appellation, the 2021 Blanc, a blend of 73% Sauvignon (picked on the 9th, 11th and 13th of September) and 27% Sémillon (picked on the 7th of September), offers up a fresh, delicate and elegant bouquet with aromas of lemon oil, lemon, spices, lime tree leaves, menthol and perfectly ripe orchard fruits. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and racy, it's layered and seamless, its concentrated core of fruit framed by racy acids and a calcareous, saline finish. Drink 2024 - 2034.

The 2021 Les Champs Libres is one of the best editions of this wine yet. Rich and explosive, with tremendous dimension, the 2021 screams with character. All Sauvignon Blanc, the 2021 Les Champs Libres Blanc is another sensational wine from this team, which is just about unrivaled in Bordeaux. Ripe melon, honeyed flowers, lime zest, and a liquid rock-like minerality all define this beauty, and it's medium-bodied, with flawlessly integrated acidity, beautiful mid-palate depth, and a great finish. Give it a few years. Drink after 2026.

Creamy herbs, green and red apples, oranges and truffles. Very hard to tell the grape variety from the nose. Filling and fleshy, bright and smooth, mouthwatering and fresh, succulent and just so enjoyable. Gorgeous density yet lightness, you get a ton of lemon and lime, green apple and soft bitter orange elements with saline undertones and a sense of energy and direction. It's a mouthful but leaves no trace of heaviness. Again, where the reds truly shine is the nuance at the end, and this has that. A few minutes later you're still tasting all the nuances and makes you think this is an excellent white Bordeaux. Refreshing, tangy, moreish and clean. Fabulous. Drink 2024 - 2035.

The Les Champs Libres 2018 Blanc is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre sélection massale clones, produced by the very talented Guinaudeau family (of Chateau Lafleur fame). It offers up a beguiling nose of lemon drops, lime blossoms, struck flint and fresh grapefruit with hints of mandarin peel and coriander seed. The elegant, refreshing, medium-bodied palate has an electric line of intense citrus flavors with tons of mineral sparks, finishing long and perfumed. This is absolutely a wine without peer in Bordeaux (anywhere!), and I love it! Drink 2022-2032.

The 2018 Les Champs Libres is a powerful, phenolic white of real substance. White flowers, citrus, chamomile, sage and light tropical notes all open in the glass, but it is the tactile feel of Les Champs Libres that leaves the deepest impression. Aromas of dried apples, lemon zest, green papaya, herbs and toasted almonds. It’s full-bodied with tangy acidity. Exciting citrus zest, stones and wild herbs on the long finish. This needs time to come around with such acid and phenolic tension. Try after 2023.

The 2018 Guinaudeau Vignerons Les Champs Libres Blanc is 100% Sauvignon from clay and limestone soils. It was vinified in new barrels and spent 5 months on lees. A beautiful, tight, concentrated white, it offers lots of tart lemon, white grapefruit, honeyed lime, and sappy flower-like nuances as well as a brilliant chalky mineral component that emerges with time in the glass. Despite the new barrels, it doesn't show a hint of oak and is medium-bodied, with bright acidity and a great finish. It's going to benefit from a year or three of bottle age and will keep for 10-15 years, if you're so inclined. Drink 2021-2036.

This is brilliant, so flavourful with so much persistency and fully embraces the slate texture. The 2023 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc has a taut, correct and, in some ways, conservative bouquet that takes time to unfold in the glass. But, I appreciate the tension and mineralité. Hints of petrichor and Granny Smiths eventually take control. The palate is very well balanced with a fresh lemon sherbet-, orange pith- and lemongrass-tinged opening. There's a very appealing texture and impressive weight on the finish. Overall, this is a superb white Malartic to drink over the next 20 years. Drink 2026-2046.

A beautifully structured and complex white with pristine, bright citrus fruit and an exotic touch. There’s a mineral character to it, too, with oyster-shell and crushed-stone notes. The 2021 Olivier Blanc has a crisp, stony bouquet with freshly-sliced pear, Granny Smiths and orange blossom. The palate is well-balanced with crisp acidity, citrus fresh with admirable cohesion. Perhaps it needs a little more mineralité on the finish, nevertheless this is a very well-made dry white that will not only drink well for at least a decade, but might represent one of the appellation's best values. The 2023 Pape Clément Blanc is another strong vintage for a wine that has been in transition for a few years now. There's still plenty of textural richness in the Blanc, but less of the tropical character and flamboyance of some past years. Orange peel, mint, dried herbs, chamomile and crushed flowers open gracefully. All the elements are so well balanced. Tasted three times. Drink 2025-2033.

Dense and tight with a solid core of sliced Meyer lemon, lime and green apple. It’s full and very compact with a phenolic texture that runs the length of the wine. Slightly chewy, yet, it’s long and persistent with a mineral and bitter citrus undertone at the end.
    96-97 points
    James Suckling

One of the more serious whites in the vintage, the 2023 Château Pape Clément Blanc has a medium gold hue as well as a terrific nose of ripe stone fruits, honeyed flowers, and toasted bread. This carries to a more medium-bodied white with a vibrant, focused mouthfeel, integrated yet bright acidity, and a clean, crisp, mineral-laced finish. It's not up with the great vintages of this cuvée, but it's nevertheless a beautifully balanced white that will shine for a decade.

Quite floral in nature, with lemon rind, tangerine, vanilla, honeysuckle, pineapple, and white peach with a dab of honey are a pleasure in your glass. Fresh, vibrant, racy, clean, and pure, with a salty-honeyed note accompanying all of the sweet, ripe, orange, and yellow tropical fruits really works here in the mid-palate, and in the finish. The 2021 Pape Clément Blanc shows the tension and cut that this vintage could bring to dry white Bordeaux. The 2021 Pape Clément Blanc offers lovely creaminess and richness, but in the more restrained, mid-weight style that has characterized these wines of late. The 2021 Pape Clément Blanc was picked from 8-23 September and offers fragrant white flowers and peach skin on the nose, more minerality than the Clementin, gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced, perhaps tauter than recent vintages with a fine spine of acidity, a dab of stem ginger and lemongrass towards the finish. The 30% Sémillon just lends a bit of umami here, and it should age well in bottle. Drink 2024-2039.

The 2021 Château Pape Clément Blanc is certainly in the running for the white of the vintage. Based on 70% Sauvignon and 30% Semillon brought up in just 18% new oak, it has bright, racy acidity that's beautifully balanced by a rock-solid core of fruit and mid-palate density. Giving up notes of pineapple, tart peach, white chocolate, and ample minerality, it will warrant 2-4 years of bottle age, but it's impressive anyway you look at it.

The 2022 Château Pape Clément Blanc is another beauty from this team, and if it puts on some weight over the course of its élevage, it will merit an even higher score. Honeyed lychee, minty herbs, melon, and stone fruits define the bulk of the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with good concentration, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. Citrus kick straight away, great direction and focus - there's purity to the lemon, peach, green apple, pear and apricot fruit. Sharp and straight but stylish. Fruity and juicy, precise and detailed, a touch tense still but there's excellent sculpting here and lots of life. Pape Clement's 2020 Blanc leaps from the glass with gregarious notions of fresh pink grapefruit, Bosc pears and lime blossoms with hints of coriander seed, yuzu zest and white pepper. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers fantastically intense citrus and pear flavors with a racy backbone and silky texture, finishing long and fragrant. The blend this year is 67% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Sémillon and 3% Sauvignon Gris, with anticipated bottling projected to be taking place on December 14 and 15, 2021. The alcohol is 13.5%.

Lots of white peach and red apple with crushed-stone and pine-needle undertones. Full-bodied, yet compact and linear with beautiful toffee, light caramel, praline and nougat character to the fruit. Hints of wood. It shows phenolic tension and form, yet remains agile and energetic. Impressive for the vintage.

Honeysuckle, orange rind, spice, pomelo, green apple and a shot of mango create the nose. On the palate the wine is full, rich, creamy, oily and fresh, with layers of ripe, sweet, spicy, yellow citrus and tart green apples in the finish.

A blend of 40% Clairette, 30% Bourboulenc, 20% Grenache Blanc and 10% Ugni Blanc. Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Nosing draws out aromas of pear, baked apple and subtle honeysuckle notes followed by a faint whiff of cinnamon. Nicely rounded the palate features pear and baked apple flavours over traces of wet stone and cinnamon. Finishes dry with a lick of fresh acidity and an elegant, delicately fleshed conclusion.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

Self-confidently funky, full-bodied dry white that might remind some of high-end sauvignon blanc or others of dry riesling. Concentrated and well structured, this has plenty of drive, though not that much fruit. Long, crisp finish with plenty of spring-meadow character. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Rayne Vigneau is a wild, exotic Sauternes. Enjoyably concentrated and intense, highly spiced as are many of the Sauternes wines in this vintage due to small yields, which gives focus and a welcome edge of bitterness to the exuberant nectarine, pineapple and fresh fig flavours. Silky texture. Vincent Labagère director.

    $1920.00 Dozen

Being owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (of Lafite fame) has been a boon for Chateau Rieussec. Since taking over the property in 1984, the planted vineyard area has increased from nearly 40 hectares to roughly 90 hectares today. Investment has also been made in the cellars, and the winemaking team are now better placed to work with the multiple small lots stemming from various parcels and picking runs through the vineyard. The vineyard is planted to 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc, and 3% Muscadelle, and the wines are aged in roughly 50% new French oak.

    Other Reviews....
A blend of 86% Sémillon and 14% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2015 Rieussec reveals a bright, pale straw-gold color and is a little closed at this youthful stage, yet it offers wonderful purity and depth, featuring notes of lemon marmalade, orange blossoms, beeswax and acacia honey with hints of preserved kumquats and peach compote. Very elegant and fine in the medium to full-bodied mouth, it features a racy backbone cutting through the earthy and citrus layers, finishing long and spicy. Drink 2021-2041.

The 2015 Rieussec is gorgeous. Scents of apricot jam, honey, mint and wild flowers lift from the glass. Delicate and gracious, with terrific freshness, the wine is all polish. Reflecting both the style of the year and the desire to make a slightly lighter Sauternes, the 2015 is rendered in a style the emphasizes finesse over power. The blend is 86% Sémillon and 14% Sauvignon Blanc. Drink 2022-2045.

So much botrytis on the nose with spice, dried mushrooms and nutmeg. Dried lemons and mangoes. Full-bodied and medium sweet with density and, at the same time, lightness. It appears likely that the 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc will overtake its 2019 counterpart as one of the most successful white wines this estate has produced to date, something that's especially impressive in the context of the vintage. Exhibiting aromas of linden, menthol, crisp orchard fruit and smoke, it’s medium to full-bodied, fleshy and crystalline, with racy acids and an unctuos mid-palate. Chalky structuring dry extract makes its presence felt on the long, mineral finish. This is a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sémillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris.

The flagship 2022 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a normal blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% each of Sauvignon Gris and Sémillon. Aged in 55% new French oak, it shines in the vintage and brings plenty of classic richness and depth while at the same time staying pure, clean, and balanced. Honeyed lemon, orange blossom, white flowers, and crushed stone all define the aromatics, and it has a beautiful mouthfeel that certainly brings the richness and depth of the vintage. This is another gem of a white from this incredible château.

Lovely perfumed notes, floral, intensely fruity with vanilla, elderflower, green apple, pear, peach and white blossom, expressive and aromatic. Succulent and juicy straight away, a real hit of citrus juice, sharp and intense, so lively and yet the texture is quite filling giving a well balanced mouthfeel. Calm but layered, you feel the precision of each aspect, the soft toasted notes, bitter grapefruit and lemon peel, crisp green apple and mineral salinity - each is carefully presented. It’s rich and has concentration but keeps the focus delivering a supremely drinkable and nuanced wine. I love the mineral tang and long length. You get the feeling of a large, warm vintage but the acidity and focus is there, so it doesn't end heavy. Lots to like here and one of the best whites of 2022. 3.2pH. Drink 2023 - 2037.

Chateau Suduiraut are among the leading estates in Sauternes, with a history dating back to the 15th century. Over that time the property has expanded to now encompass 200 hectares with 92 hectares under vine, including prime vineyard parcels in the most elevated area of Sauternes alongside Chateau d'Yquem. The team at Suduiraut are passionate and uncompromising in their commitment to quality, ensuring only the finest grapes are selected over multiple passes in the vineyard, before expert vinification and a strict selection at final blending.

The 2023 Suduiraut (100% Sémillon) is a real stunner. Light on its feet yet wonderfully deep, the 2023 offers up a heady mix of tangerine oil, mint, white flowers, apricot and passion fruit. Readers will find a Sauternes that is more finesse than power. The 2023 is essentially a blend of three picks. The first was done at the end of September and accounted for 20% of the crop. The core of the vineyard, about 75%, was picked in a day ten window in October, following the September rains. A smaller third pick rounded out the harvest. Drink 2026-2043.

The 2023 Suduiraut is pure Sémillon that was picked from the end of September with more passerillage berries. After the rain, the first botrytis picking began on October 1 and lasted over the next 12 days, when botrytization was rapid. Seventy percent of the crop was picked on this date, which was essential for maintaining purity of fruit. The harvest concluded on October 17 after three tries through the vineyard. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a lovely, beguiling bouquet with dried honey, quince, almond and saffron aromas that are beautifully defined. The palate is well balanced with a spicy, tensile opening. Very impressive richness matches with a silver bead of acidity here. This is armed with immense purity on the finish that effortlessly manages the 150g/L residual sugar. Supremely gifted Suduiraut, ahoy. Drink 2027-2070.

The purity of the botrytis grabs your attention, with density and intensity to the dried fruit, sweetness and length. Very spicy and long. Almost oily. Really rich. 150g/L residual sugar. 100% semillon.

Killer juice, the 2023 Château Suduiraut has a drop-dead gorgeous nose of honeyed orange, white flowers, warm croissant, and spice. This carries to a full-bodied Sauternes with a round, layered mouthfeel, terrific sweetness of fruit, and bright acidity.

Intensity is the keyword here. The wealth of ripe, and overripe white peaches, pineapples, pears, roasted cashews, apricots, spice, and vanilla is off the hook! The wine is rich, opulent, and seductive, but there is ample racy acidity giving this sweet treat the lift it needs. Long, and seamless, this is a true, decadent treat, that lovers of sweet wines should have in their cellars. It will age for decades. The wine was made from 100% Semillon. Drink from 2025-2060.

The 2022 Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes Blanc Sec debuted two years earlier and comes from oldest vines in the best terroirs,. It has a lovely bouquet with orchard fruit, honeysuckle and melted wax aromas. The palate is well balanced with good depth, fine acidity, much more complexity than the Lions ,with a touch of stem ginger furnishing the finish. Lovely. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2022 Grand Vin Blanc Sec Vieilles Vignes is laced with hints of lemon confit, marzipan, ginger, white flowers and white pepper. The 2022 is quite reticent today, which is probably a good sign for its aging prospects. The 2022 has a phenolic-like quality that imparts notable structure. Drink 2027-2042.

Possibly even better, and a remarkable white in the vintage, the 2022 Château Suduiraut Vieilles Vignes reveals a vivid gold hue as well as an already complex bouquet of bright citrus, caramelized limes, tart melon, and minty herbs. A blend of 55% Sémillon and 45% Sauvignon Blanc that's still resting in 30% new barrels, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, concentrated mouthfeel, and a great finish. This rich, textured, incredibly impressive white is going to shine on the dinner table. It should benefit from 2-3 years in the cellar and drink nicely over the following decade.

Sweet juicy lemons, white peach, spice, mango, and honeysuckle on the nose get this started. But it is on the palate, with its sweet citrus, orange pith, and touch of honey where the wine shows its best. The wine blends 55% Semillon and 45% Sauvignon Blanc. Drink from 2023-2029.

The Tronquoy 2023 Blanc, a blend of 51% Sémillon and 49% Sauvignon Gris, exhales aromas of pear, white flowers and white fruits. The 2023 Blanc is quite rich and textured in this vintage. The blend is 51% Sémillon and 49% Sauvignon Gris, with the Sémillon very much driving the wine's textural feel. Lemon confit, marzipan, mint, dried flowers. spice and white pepper all build. Drink 2025-2033.

    Antonio Galloni - Vinous

More freshness to this than 2022, showing dried-mango and lemon aromas, as well as some lemon curd. It’s medium-bodied with depth and intensity of fruit. Flavorful and rather characterful, but a hint of tension at the end holds it together tightly. 51% semillon and 49% sauvignon gris.
    93-94 points
    James Suckling

The 2023 Château Tronquoy Blanc is a tiny-production white based on close to equal parts Semillon and Sauvignon Gris. Rocking stone fruits, golden apple, ripe citrus, and minty herb notes define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with a round, layered, concentrated texture, integrated acidity, and beautifully integrated oak. It's another serious white for a great château.

Incredibly aromatic; honeysuckle, lemongrass, minerality, ripe peach and some bitter grapefruit. Great freshness and brightness here, lots of vivacity - some sharp, almost tart green apple countered by freshly cut pineapple with a touch of bitterness. Lovely lift and balance, ripe with a hint of sweetness but great mouth-filling texture and really elongated finish. On the high toned spectrum, acidity is at the fore with the almost bitter touches coming through strongly, but altogether really interesting and captivating. Keeps a direct frame, lean, and streamlined, not fat but there’s a touch of richness. Lemon and orange skin on the finish. Vinified and ageing only in barrels, 20% new oak for 12 months. Drink 2024 - 2035.

Flowers, green apples, orange rind, and white peach aromas jump from the glass. The palate is lush, round, and fruity, expressing its tropical nature with ripe, vibrant, pineapple, white peach, mango, and tangerine. The wine is an equal blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Gris. Drink from 2025-2031.

The 2021 Valandraud Blanc is a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy wine bursting with aromas of orchard fruit, confit citrus and pastry cream. As ever, it's one of the fatter, more textural white wines produced in Bordeaux, even in this cooler vintage.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2021 Valandraud Blanc was picked September 7–20 and matured in 80% new oak. The nose is well defined and complex, featuring apple blossom, honeysuckle, white chocolate and white linen scents that gently unfold with time. The palate is fresh, vibrant, powerful and judiciously spiced, with a slight waxiness to the texture, and it fans out beautifully on the finish. Superb. Just 3,500 bottles produced. Drink 2027-2042.

The 2021 Valandraud Blanc is captivating. In most vintages, the Blanc is built on textural richness, but the 2021 has an airy quality that is so alluring. Orchard fruit, lemon confit, jasmine, white pepper and a discreet touch of oak are beautifully woven together. The Blanc remains gracious and light on its feet, with impeccable balance and tons of sheer class. I loved it. Drink 2026-2036.

A full-bodied, serious white with complex notes already of flint, crushed stones, white pears, white lavender, cedar, fennel and lemon grass. Mineral and subtly spicy finish. Structured. Nicely done.

The Grand Vin 2021 Château Valandraud Blanc is mostly Sauvignon Gris but includes 30% Sauvignon Blanc and a splash of Semillon. Crushed stone, pineapple, and bright citrus give way to a medium-bodied, concentrated, incredibly pure, precise white displaying everything that makes this vintage so promising for the whites. As with all the whites here, it has a low pH, racy acidity, yet terrific mid-palate depth, beautiful balance, and a gorgeous finish. This will stand up to the best whites in the vintage.

Flowers, honeysuckle, vanilla, and yellow with orange citrus create the nose. On the palate, the wine cracks with bright, crisp, lemon peel, a touch of orange, spice, and pineapple. The finish balances between its opulent, flamboyant nature and its fresh, bright citrus side. The wine blends 50% Sauvignon Gris, 35% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Semillon. The harvest took place September 7 - September 20. Drink from 2023-2037.

Gorgeous nose, perfumed peach, pear and floral notes - so appealing and welcoming. Graceful and charming on the palate, this has depth of flavour with a lovely core of juicy white fruits with a steely saltiness giving it that push-pull of fruit and minerality. This has character - it's not a massively weighty wine but has precision and refinement, presenting the elements delicately but still with structure and frame. The flavours linger and they are all perfectly balanced. I love the shot of lemon, bitter orange and cool stone saline touches. Both the red and white grand vins are delicious and successful in 2021. Clemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.

Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

The 2021 Marienburg Spätlese is pure, bright and flinty on the reductive but fruit-intense and concentrated nose. Round, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a refined and saline, very delicate and stimulating Spätlese with a pure and salivating finish. The 2020er Riesling vom blauen Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from early pickings in the blue-slate sector (Fahrlay) of the Pündericher Marienburg. It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, pear, a hint of earthy spices, wet stone, floral elements, and smoke. The wine proves juicy rather than bone-dry on the palate, where riper flavors play with one’s senses. The finish is still slightly rough and backward. This wine now only needs a few years of patience to fully shine. It could then easily exceed our early high expectations especially as it reveals its superbly floral and fresh array of flavors. Le Clos du Caillou was established in 1895 with the Vacheron family taking over in 1956, focusing on organic farming and planting vineyards. Now, the younger Vacheron generation is gradually assuming control, with guidance from Bruno Gaspard.
The Cotes du Rhone Blanc consists of 50% Grenache Blanc, 35% Viognier, and 15% Clairette, sourced from 40-50 year-old low yielding vines. Hand-picked fruit is carefully sorted, then gently pressed as whole bunches and left to settle overnight at 10°C. Afterward, they undergo cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks and age on fine lees for four months.
Bright pale straw colour with straw tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pear and ripe Jonathan apple mix with honeysuckle and ginger spice notes. Fleshy pear, apricot and honeysuckle flavours have a luscious feel and carry good textural volume. Notions of wet stone and subtle ginger lie underneath. Finishes dry with good freshness and a well rounded, gently spice conclusion.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

The 2023 Clos Haut-Peyraguey is captivating. Scents of apricot, spice, tangerine peel, honey, marzipan and passion fruit caress the palate. There's a greater focus on freshness these days, but Clos Haut-Peyraguey remains one of the more extroverted wines in Sauternes, as witnessed by its 164 grams of residual sugar. Some of that is surely a reflection of the year in this particular case. Even with its initial exuberance, the 2023 finishes with fine energy and tension. Drink 2028-2053.

The 2023 Clos Haut-Peyraguey has a more resinous, waxier bouquet than its peers due to the expressiveness of the 95% Sémillon. The palate is very viscous on the entry, harmonious and pure. The wine blends 80% Semillon with 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Drink from 2025-2047.

The 2022 Clos Haut-Peyraguey is laced with scents of tangerine oil, mint, white flowers and ripe green pear. Creamy and unctuous, but not at all heavy, the 2022 is showing beautifully today. All the elements are so well balanced in this classy, understated Sauternes from Bernard Magrez. Yields were just 9 hectoliters per hectare. Tasted two times. Drink 2025-2042.

This young Sauternes shows botrytis spice with dried mushroom and stone character. Light honey. Medium body. Dried fruit and a sweet finish. Spicy at the end with dried mushroom. 80% semillon and 20% sauvignon blanc.

    Complex and powerful Sauvignon Blanc.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with green toned edges and a watery hue. Captivating the olfactory senses are passionfruit, gooseberry, lime and spicy green apple scents which move out of the glass with terrific intensity. Lending further complexity are some herbaceous grassy notes, asparagus and delicate flinty mineral aromas. Mouth watering lime, passionfruit, ripe gooseberry and green apple fruits are delivered with outstanding concentration and power. Herbaceous grassy characters, asparagus and delicate spicy pencil shaving elements lie underneath. Complimenting the expansive volume of fruit is crisp acidity. Exceptionally long and moreish finish.

A mouth watering rendition of New Zealand’s most famous Sauvignon Blanc.

The 2024 release of the Sauvignon Blanc that put New Zealand wine on the map marks it’s 40th vintage. Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Soaring out of the glass are intense passionfruit, guava and ripe gooseberry aromas followed by hints of capsicum and grassy asparagus like notes. Mouth watering passionfruit, guava and lime fruits are delivered with excellent concentration. Herbaceous gooseberry, grassy asparagus and subtle capsicum accents lie underneath. Crisp acidity finishing long and scrumptious.

Sleek, seamless and expressive, with notes of ruby grapefruit, Key lime, mango puree, salted and preserved lemon, and lemon basil, plus details of fresh sea salt, all on a mouthwatering frame. Shows plenty of intensity on the long, expressive finish, where a hint of green tea emerges.

Delicious pear, green apple and lime fruits with a river stone like mouth feel and dry, slatey finish.

Coming from the commune of Ronca in the heart of Garganega country, Monte Ronca is a creation of local specialist, Antonio Fattori, an acknowledged Soave-master. Most the fruit for wines comes from the hills to the north of this commune, a specific site called Monte Calvarino, which peaks at 680 m (the inactive volcano from which the wine takes its name). At this altitude, this beautiful cool site provides a perfect environment for a higher grade, single site Soave. The hills around Monte Calvarino (in comparative terms to the region in general) are particularly steep, and from a viticultural perspective, pose some challenges. But to Antonio, this is critical to capture depth of flavour and structure, as the best expressions of Soave are never found on the valley floor where it gets too warm. Here, the ancient volcanic soils impart a flinty minerality to the hand-harvested fruit, while in the cellar, lees stirring and subtle oak ageing and varying levels of appassimento add a rich texture and further complexity to the wine.
Brilliant pale straw colour with subtle flashes of green around the edges and a watery hue. Drifting out of the glass are aromas of pear, lime and green apple skin followed by some fresh Mediterranean herb and wet slate notes. Sliding across the palate are delicious pear, green apple and lime fruits infused with fresh herbs which have a wet slate and mineral underbelly. Crisp acidity with a river stone like mouth feel. Long, dry, slatey finish.

A deliciously fresh Rioja blend that carries a supple river stone like feel.

Made from a blend of 75% Viura, 20% Malvasia and 5% Tempranillo Blanco. Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint greenish tone around the edges and a watery hue. Attractive pear, lime and red apple aromas gently flow out of the glass trailed by whiffs of honeysuckle and wet stone. Delicious pear, lime and green to red apple fruits carry a supple river stone like feel across the palate with delicate infusions of fresh herbs and stony mineral elements lying underneath. Fresh, vibrant finish.
