The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is also quite promising, exhibiting aromas of pear, buttered citrus fruit, honeycomb, toasted almonds and white flowers. Full-bodied, satiny and rich, with a fleshy core of fruit and good underlying freshness, I hope it can repeat this fine performance from bottle.

Such a classic Corton Charlemagne! Stunningly concentrated and powerful, but also so graceful. Very racy at the long finish, which has so much mineral freshness. Takes your breath away! Drink or hold.

Moreau’s Villages wine is drawn from 20- to 30-year-old vineyards in Préhy and Courgis, in the south of Chablis. The fruit is subject to a very gentle four-hour press, and the juice is fermented with natural yeasts (a rarity in Chablis). Raised mostly in tank, (it’s not until the Vieilles Vignes level and above that Moreau utilises (older) barrels in significant percentages), the wine spent 20 months on lees which is considerably longer than the vast majority of Chablis at this level.  These traditional methods—along with hand-harvesting, the quality of the terroir, low yields (circa 35 hl/ha) and the full ripeness levels at which the fruit was harvested—help to explain the fabulous texture, depth and quality that is on offer here.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Elevated pear and lime scents meld into dried honey, wet stone and subtle oyster shell notes. On the palate delicious pear, lime and green apple fruits are layered over a back drop of discreet dried honey characters, light oyster shell and stony mineral characters. Beautifully rounded in the mouth, almost supple like in its feel, it finishes dry with brisk acidity and a long sleek yet well cut aftertaste.
A very tasty Chablis to drink over the next 4-5 years.

Domaine Oudin was established in the late 1980’s by Christiane and Jean-Claude Oudin, professionals looking to escape Paris to a small holding in Chichée, Chablis, belonging to Christiane’s parents. Today Domaine Oudin is still very much in family hands, run by their daughters Nathalie and Isabelle. The Vaucoupin vineyards are around 70 years of age and no oak is used in the winemaking process.
Bright pale straw colour with a watery hue. Pronounced fresh pear and dried honey aromas meld into citrus, wet stone and mineral notes. Rich fleshy peach, pear and dried honey fruits possess a beautiful textural roundness over a stony back drop. Excellent intensity of flavour with faint elements of oyster shell and a chalky minerality also present. Finishes dry and fresh with a long shapely aftertaste. A rich, mouthfilling Chablis.

Pierre Morey became one of the most respected winemakers in Burgundy through the 1980's, and only enhanced his reputation further upon taking up the régisseur (general manager and head vigneron) role at Domaine Leflaive in 1988. All the while he ran his own domaine in Meursault with his daughter, Anne, beginning to work there too. When she was studying, Pierre sat Anne down and explained: “I can teach you a thing or two about making white wine, but I cannot with red so please pay extra attention in school to Pinot Noir!”. The proof is in the pudding, their red wines are now equally as first rate as their white wines. The wines of Domaine Pierre Morey are of the highest and most celebrated echelon in Burgundy. They have been farmed organically since 1993 and biodynamically since 1998. They are fine and structured yet ever so flavoursome. As the wines age they require air in the glass and tighten before your eyes.

Discreet wood sets off the white peach and panoply of citrus elements that exhibit a touch of phenolic character. There is excellent delineation and vibrancy to the broader-shouldered flavors that possess fine depth on the tautly muscular and powerful finish that is clean, dry and youthfully austere. This is also quite tightly wound and is definitely a wine that is going to require extended patience if you wish to experience it at its peak. In a word, lovely. Drink 2030+.

Aromas of green pear, almond paste, mandarin oil, honeyed yellow orchard fruit and pastry cream introduce the 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, deep and muscular wine that's layered and concentrated, with lovely mid-palate amplitude and serious chalky structuring extract. This is a long and powerful Bâtard that will require bottle age to fulfill all its potential. Readers should note that this wine is identical with the Bâtard-Montrachet released under the Morey-Blanc label.

The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comprises three-and-a-half barrels this year. It has an absolutely killer bouquet of intense, mineral-rich citrus fruit that gains vigor with aeration. Wonderful delineation and precision here, with oyster shell and estuarine scents emerging with time. The palate is very well balanced, delivering a precise, intense entry and enormous depth and volume in the mouth, but with counterbalancing tension on a long, spicy finish that fans out wonderfully. Superb. Drink 2024 - 2055.

A more complex and much more expressive nose freely offers up its combination of lemon grass, acacia blossom, mineral reduction and various white orchard fruit. The succulent, round and solidly concentrated flavors exude more evident minerality on the clean, dry and compact finale. The 2018 Meursault Les Tessons comes from a single parcel close to Jean-Marc Roulot’s. It has a very pure and very Meursault bouquet with all the leitmotifs one expects: grilled walnut, touches of almond and a little passion fruit. Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.

Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.

Abbaye de Morgeot has the same gravelly, clayey limestone soil as its neighbours, providing a well-drained terroir with plenty of mineral complexity. The incline here is much gentler than further up the hill, and the vines have a very slight aspect toward the southeast.

Bright, healthy yellow. Very ripe aromas of peach and apricot come across as a bit more evolved than those of the Poruzots but then this barrel finished its sugars earlier and is a bit lower in SO2 now. Sappy and concentrated, conveying a strong impression of chewy dry extract to its very ripe, rich yellow fruit flavors. Hard to assess with confidence but certainly very rich. Meursault Narvaux is one of those village crus that constantly threaten premier cru status. From one of the highest elevations in Meursault, Remi's vines age from 55-65 years.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish highlights around the outskirts and a watery hue. Offering up good intensity the nose features refined aromatics of white peach and dried honey followed by some nectarine, stony mineral notes and a faint whiff of nougat. This Meursault is all about finesse and elegance displaying light to medium bodied flavours of white peaches and pears delicately overlaid with dried honey, subtle nougat and stony mineral characters. Finishes dry with the vintages trademark freshness. Long elegantly textured aftertaste of white peaches, pears, dried honey, cashew and stony mineral. Will fill out well with some bottle age.

Showing the fresher, more elegant style of the vintage, yet still with plenty of heft, the 2014 Meursault Les Narvaux comes from 65-year-old vines and was brought up in larger Stockinger barrels from Austria. It offers terrific notes of green citrus and assorted mineral-nuances, with impressive intensity and depth in both its aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied and seamless on the palate, with a beautiful sense of vibrancy and tension, it’s already impossible to resist, yet I suspect it will cruise in the cellar given its balance. Pale color. Aromas of crystallized lemon peel and peach show a candied aspect in a positive, fresh way. Juicy, elegant and gripping, showing the thickness of the vintage's better examples but also solid balancing acidity. Its flavors of citrus fruits and acacia flower are enlivened by underlying minerality. Finishes generous, dry and long. Incidentally, Jobard told me that his 2014s finished drier than his 2015s.

(as with the Chevalières and the Genevrières, I tasted this wine from a pièce because Jobard's foudres were still finishing their sugars): Apple, clove and a hint of oak on the nose and palate. Boasts lovely inner-mouth lift and grip; the yield here was actually slightly higher than that of the 2014 (40 hectoliters per hectare, vs. 30 or 35) but this has a more concentrated mouthfeel. Brilliant pale straw colour with a light greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense ripe peach and honeyed apricot aromas blossom out of the glass followed by nuances of lemon butter, bees wax and spicy nougat. Rich and full in the mouth yet finishing with good freshness the palate is decorated with generous flavours of ripe peaches and apricots overlaid by dried honey, subtle cashew, citrusy nougat and spice. Creamy, slightly waxy like textural feel ending dry with vibrant perfectly balanced acidity. Long aftertaste of ripe peaches, apricots, cashew, citrusy nougat and spice.

Aromas of apple, mirabelle and marzipan convey a superripe quality. Fat and sweet on the palate but given shape by harmonious acidity. This silky, concentrated wine shows no rough edges today. A full, thick fruit bomb with a marzipan ripeness to its yellow fruit and spice flavors; not a particularly mineral style but not heavy either. Finishes with good grip and surprising length.

From three parcels in the Premier Cru vineyard Genevrieres; one planted in 1995, one planted in 1958 and one at least 70 years old. Remi makes his most mineral, terroir-filled Meursault from here but never at the expense of richness and depth.

Pale lemon-yellow color. Complex, refined aromas of white peach, citrus fruits, nut oil and white flowers. Dense, tactile and saline, boasting terrific purity and precision to its piquant fruit and rocky mineral flavors. This very classy wine finishes with succulent salinity and terrific juicy length. The yield here was around 40 hectoliters per hectare, the highest among these Meursault bottlings, but this wine displays lovely balance and an exhilarating light touch.

The premier cru Les Poruzots-Dessus adjoins Genevrieres-Dessus and Remi produces a lush, opulent wine from this site. From two parcels; one of 85 year old vines, one of 45 year old vines.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a light greenish tinge around the edges and watery hue. Fresh white peach scents are to the fore with ensuing citrusy pear characters, faint lemon butter, bees wax and subtle stony end notes. Light and elegant but with good persistence the palate is delicately flavoured with white peaches and nectarines subtlety infused with bees wax followed by stony mineral and some light spice. Clean dry finish with good lively acidity boding well for longer term cellaring. Long refined aftertaste of white peaches, nectarines, bees wax, cashew and stony mineral.

Bright lemon-yellow color. Lemon, white flowers and a whiff of honey on the reticent nose. Quite dry, even a bit unyielding, displaying a thickness of texture but with its fruit in the deep background. Less minerally than the Chevalières but this wine nonetheless will require cellaring to express itself.

Pale lemon-yellow. Fresh scent of lemon zest. Firm and clean in the mouth, with its ripe flavors of white peach, citrus fruits and white flowers showing a lovely balance of sweetness and acidity. Almost creamy for 2014 but finishes with excellent grip. (Jobard's two Bourgogne Blanc bottlings are both well worth buying, with the one simply labeled Bourgogne Blanc--the more expensive of the two--showing strong yellow fruit, spice and hazelnut aromas and flavors with excellent intensity and lift.)

Roland Lavantureux founded his namesake Domaine in 1978 following completion of wine school in Beaune. Since then he has built a reputation for crafting some of the most consistent and reliable examples of Chablis from vineyards planted on the prized Kimmeridgian soils around the village of Lignorelles. The Domaine is now under the care of Roland's two sons Arnaud and David who have increased the family holdings to twenty-one hectares, adding single-vineyard cuvées while constantly striving for more complexity and layered texture in the mineral-driven wines they produce. Ferments are temperature controlled in stainless steel and all but the Petit-Chablis spends some time in 2 to 5 year old barriques. Whilst the Vaudesir is a mighty Grand Cru, the signature wine of the Domaine is the lieu-dit 'Vauprin' which is one of the highest vineyards in Chablis and gives remarkable mineral influence to the wine.

    Other Reviews....
The 2018 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru comes from 0.4ha of 25-year-old vines and is matured in 80% oak barrels and 20% stainless steel. It has a fabulous nose of citrus fruit, orange blossom, crushed limestone and light fumé aromas. The oak here is beautifully knitted. The palate is very well balanced and poised, the oak perhaps a little prominent on the midpalate and masking some of the terroir at the moment. However, there is superb precision on the finish. This Vaudesir just needs 3–5 years in bottle to fully assimilate the wood. Drink 2025 - 2045.

A fuller if still pale yellow. The nose shows the sunshine and considerable weight of fruit. A little bit of wood too. The Vaudésir offers hugely more intensity than Bougros, and while the wood needs to integrate (which it will), there is a long steely finish awash with limestone.

Chalk, wax, smoke and lemon are intense on this wine's nose, immediately conveying that it is not about fruit but rather stone and place. The same goes for the palate where a dense texture redoubles on that chalk and smoke. But everything is brightened and pulled into delicious focus by lemon freshness. This wine has poise, elegance and subtlety. Drink 2022–2040.

Served after the 1er Cru Fourchaumes and deservedly so – it would be hard to make a better straight Chablis this. Fine pale lemon colour. The nose is beautifully chiselled, with more personality than their Fourchaume. Very good weight of fruit, flesh even, helps to stretch out the finish. It is certainly “gourmand” this year.

A touch of wet walnut accompanies pear and lemon on this wine's fresh nose. Vivaciousness at the core belies the heat of the 2018 vintage. Yes, there is concentration and some midpalate weight, but salty, preserved-lemon freshness dominates the wine and bright finish.

Domaine Rolet was founded in 1942 by Désiré Rolet. His four children took over operations in 1958, with Bernard and Guy taking charge of the vines and vinification, and Pierre and Eliane running marketing. Over the years, the domain has acquired prime old vines across Arbois, Côtes-du-Jura and L’Étoile appellations and now spans 65 hectares. Brothers Bernard and Guy Rolet farm sustainably and harvest the fully ripe grapes by hand—which is difficult work among the steep slopes. No synthetic chemicals are used and the soils are constantly ploughed.

Vin Jaune is emblematic of the Jura region, and is made from 100% Savagnin that thrives in the hills of blue and grey marls from the lias (Jurassic) and the earlier trias (Mesozoic) eras. All harvesting is done by hand, and following vinification the wines spends 6 years maturing in barrel with no topping up. This allows a layer of flor to form on top of the wine, and gives the final wine its unique walnut and saline flavours.

This white blend comes from an 18-hectare plot at 300 meters of altitude, purchased in 2016. This piece of land has a cooler orientation than the rest of the Estate - east and south–east facing - and is mostly composed of sandy marl. As it is less hot, the site is mostly used to emphasize the freshness of white and rosé wines, as historically this terroir was considered the reference for Bandol in these two colours.

For three generations, the Valette family has lived in Chaintré, a small village on the border between Mâconnais and Beaujolais. They grow only Chardonnay on fifteen acres scattered in five villages. The domain was created in 1977, when Gérard Valette was one of the first in the area to leave the local cooperative and start bottling his own wine. After completing wine training, son Philippe joined in 1990 and then decided to convert the family's vineyards to organic farming, using biodynamic methods since 1992.

The Valette's are known for their specific style, wines raised with thorough lees-contact and without racking. They have remained true to this style of winemaking since the 1950s. It is a sort of family tradition that requires accuracy as well as painstaking detail knowledge of the indigenous yeasts and the wine’s proneness to develop reductive flavours. If the estate's wines through the late 1990s were simply powerful, textural examples of high-quality white Burgundy, the wines being released today belong in a category of their own. Complex and sapid, these are fascinating wines although you should be prepared to find wines that are quite different from any of the Valettes' neighbours. Anyone who appreciates the Jura bottlings of Jean-François Ganevat or the Thomas Pico Chablis wines is likely to love them. Valette's wines often benefit from extended aeration so decanting is recommended.

Pouilly-Fuissé produces the grandest wines of the Mâconnais and its best wines can age for many years. Average age in Valette's plots is over 60 years old, and following vinification the wine is aged for 30 months in older barrels. As with all of Valette's wines, this will benefit from extended aeration so decanting is recommended.

Pouilly-Vinzelles MesdemoiZelles hails from plots where the soils contain high levels of limestone lending an extra level of freshness and intensity to the wine. Average age of the vines here is 70 years old, and following vinification the wine is aged for 30 months in older barrels. As with all of Valette's wines, this will benefit from extended aeration so decanting is recommended.

Aromas of minty green apples and citrus oil introduce the 2017 Mâcon-Villages, a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy wine that's bright and layered, concluding with a saline finish. This bottling comes from comparatively young vines and is vinified and matured in tank. The 2017 is quite easy to understand and makes a great introduction to the wines of this fascinating and idiosyncratic domaine.

The lovely 2014 Pouilly-Fuissé offers up an inviting bouquet that mingles notes of waxy citrus rind and clear honey with nuances of marzipan, mandarin and dried white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and concentrated, with a bright spine of acidity and a long, saline finish. Just bottled, this is the latest release of Valette's regular Pouilly-Fuissé.

Le Clos Reyssié is an east facing vineyard with 65 year old vines, and the elevage here was 10 years in barrels, topped up four times a year. The nose is explosive with varied oxidative notes showing curry, candied citrus, saffron and salted butter caramel. The mouthfeel is ample and very complex, with a graceful fluidity. Finally phenomenal length, beautiful tension and lovely balance. A wine to savour and one that will keep.

The Pouilly Fuisse Clos de Monsieur Noly Vieilles Vignes is an incredibly special wine that defies convention as it is elevaged in barrel for 12 years topped up four times a year. It's pure South facing vineyard with 65 year old vines. It has a luminous yellow gold/amber colour and very complex nose of confit citrus, spices, cherries, and honeyed almonds - wonderfully complex. This is a massively expansive, beautifully balanced, and pure wine coats the senses. It is hugely complex, concentrated, and simply fascinating.
