However current custodian Olivier Humbrecht MW is the latest generation of Humbrecht winemakers dating back to 1620. Olivier is a legend among modern French winemakers, becoming France’s first Master of Wine at the age of 29, before returning to the family Domaine and beginning a journey to revitalise the vineyards after years of chemical treatment common at the time. Today the Domaine comprises 41.1 hectares of vines spread throughout a range of Grand Cru and single-vineyard sites, all cultivated organically and according to biodynamic principles. These are the pinnacle of aromatic whites from Alsace.

The 2021 Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal is a monopole for Zind-Humbrecht. It is located between Brand and Heimbourg, utterly different from both, with calcareous marl and gypsum on south-facing terraces. In the past, this was dedicated to making sweeter wines with botrytis. The vines were planted in 1983. The nose has a flicker of reduction, followed by an aromatic notion of pear, freshly turned earth and orange peel. The palate has concentration and flow, a russet pear texture and a salty, cool, mouth-watering core. The saltiness is more intense than the fruit. The beautiful, bone-dry finish is very appetizing. (Bone-dry). Drink 2027-2060.

Hang on to your hat! Here’s a dense and dangerous wine for a grape most wine drinkers think can only give no-brainers. Very compact and structured with a dark personality that some may find shocking, but what makes it that way is the gypsum marl minerality that is its soul. Brain-rattling freshness at the super stony finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

The 2021 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl has a flicker of reduction and shows off subtle russet pear, ripe and gentle. The palate has a pear peel texture and seems almost austere with its bone-dryness. A lemon touch makes the mouth water and becomes more intense towards the dry finish, which holds some gingerbread spice, ginger and cinnamon. Gorgeous and different. (Bone-dry). Drink 2027-2060.

The golden color of the 2021 Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru signals richness. However, the wine is subtle on the nose and still clouded by promising reduction. The palate presents juicy pear, lemon-edged, with a lovely licorice bitterness. The acidity is smooth and balanced, but licorice keeps flashing up darkly, broodingly, speaking of the dark volcanic stone. The finish is very long and intriguing because this is such a taut, almost austere Pinot Gris, compelling and dramatic. Wait for this. (Bone-dry). Drink 2027-2070.

This vision of pinot gris perfection creeps up to you on tip toe. Wonderful quince fruit and smokiness on the rather closed nose, followed by the impeccably balanced and delightful front palate. Then the hammer falls and the overwhelming crushed rock minerality hits you like a landslide that sweeps everything away. And somehow all this feels as weightless as a cloud! From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is grown on Triassic limestone, facing east to southeast, on the upper part of the clos with less topsoil. The age of the old vines is unknown, estimated to be 65 years old. The younger vines were planted in the early 1980s. Windsbuhl means windy hill and used to be referred to as petit Sibérie - so it comes into its own now. Reduction takes over on the nose, but underneath, there are gentle glimpses of lemon. The palate has a real phenolic edge, a lovely, pithy bitterness that lends contour to the lemony flow. Lovely flashes of passion fruit pop up, upping the aromatic game, lending allure to flavor and texture, underlined by a bone-dry finish. (Bone-dry). Drink 2027-2060.

The 2021 Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru is from the famously steep and dark volcanic rock of Rangen with some sandstone inclusions. The soil is rich in potassium which buffers the pH of the wine, making the acid less strident yet lending much power to the wines. The oldest plots of Riesling are up to 60 years old; the younger vines are 45 years old. The color is golden. Underneath the reduction is a spicy smokiness, with greengage and white pepper. There is something utterly fluid, intense, compact and concentrated that seems to have a total verticality, driving into the depth of the rock. The wine has luminous citric yet balanced freshness and is clear as a bell. Wait for this because it will be sensational. The finish is bone-dry and salty. (Bone-dry). Drink 2027-2080.

Certified organic and biodynamic. Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with a watery hue. Lifted ripe pear, rosewater and Turkish delight aromas are trailed by some ginger spice notes. Rich, amply weighted pear, honeysuckle and Turkish delight flavours overlay lychee and ginger characters. Texturally lush and concentrated. Slightly off dry finish with lively acidity and a long spicy aftertaste.

Pronounced aromas of salinity, petrol and toasted oak rise up out of the glass. This wine offers a rich, dense texture accented by fresh apple notes and a slightly petrol finish. This is a wine of intensity and body, although it does carry a bit of alcohol heat on the finish. Pair it with mild pasta dishes, fish or cheese, though, and you won't even notice.

This Gewurztraminer was made from relatively old vineyards located on the warmest part of the gravelly valley floor near the village of Turckheim. Gewurztraminer is a variety that needs a lot of sunshine, and some warmth, during the few weeks before harvest. Like a red grape, Gewurztraminer requires perfect skin ripeness, in order to avoid vulgar aromatics but also green tannins. Phenolic ripeness is paramount for Gewurztraminer. It can be achieved by waiting a long time to harvest the grapes (that is usually done on the richer marl soils, producing sweeter wines) or by planting this grape on a geology allowing for precocious ripeness, like gravelly and sandy soils. Being able to harvest earlier also helps to control the potential richness of the wines. After a very fast fermentation, this wine ended up bone dry. It was kept on its full lees until bottling.
Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Intoxicating aromatics of rose water, lychee, Turkish delight, honeysuckle and distinct ginger spice notes flood the nostrils. Rich, lusciously textured flavours of lychee, spicy pear, musk, subtle honeysuckle and ginger are delivered with terrific intensity. Dry finish with nicely balanced acidity and a long exotic aftertaste that shows plenty of spice.

A lot of riesling freaks say the grape needs stony soils, but here’s a beautiful example of how well it can do on clay-rich soil. So much citrus and peach here, even though there’s still a touch of youthful leeriness. Rich and powerful, it also has a very firm core behind the breathtaking succulence. Already great integration of concentration, fine tannins and bright acidity through the very long and complete finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Grand Cru Pinot Gris from the exposed terraces of the Sub Vosges hills. The Kessler Grand Crus is set in the centre of the hill, where it forms a small valley, which protects the vineyard from the northern winds and cold air streams brought up by the valley of Guebwiller. As this is a warmer micro-climate with good aeration and even ripening, it is a great area for Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris.

    Other Reviews....
Smoky mineral and almond blossom accents are layered with juicy glazed apple, singed orange peel and honeycomb flavors in this lightly sweet and silky Pinot Gris enlivened by mouthwatering acidity. Textbook Pinot Gris, with a long, lightly fleshy finish. Drink now through 2029.

Notes from the producer... Now run by the 6th and 7th generations, Domaines Schlumberger was founded in 1810 by Nicolas Schlumberger, who established vineyards on the renowned slopes above the town of Guebwiller. This pale golden yellow Pinot Blanc promises notes of citrus and yellow fruit on the nose. It's crisp but with good weight, nicely balanced and finishes dry. Serve with charcuterie, raw fish, delicate starters, scallops or fresh salads. 12.5% Alc./Vol.

Lifted notes of crushed citrus foliage set the aromatic tone on the nose of this wine. The dry palate keeps these vivid citrus notions but backs them with a riper backing track that suggests Mirabelle plum. The wine has elegance, sinuousness and a svelte but concentrated nature. The dry finish is fresh and appetizing. Drink by 2030.
