2019 Renato Ratti Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata
    Piedmont, ITALY
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

The Rocche dell’Annunziata vineyard, located on a steep hillside, is considered to be one of the most important sites in all of Barolo. Pietro Ratti calls the site a Grand Cru of La Morra. The wine is aged in French oak barriques in its first year and is then transferred to large Slavonian oak casks for its second year of maturation.

Lots of dried flowers here give a perfumed nature to it with berries and citrus. Hibiscus water, too. Full-bodied and chewy with lots of tannins and vivid acidity. Subtle plum and strawberry character. Muscular and formed. This needs time. Try after 2028.

The 2019 Barolo Rocche Dell'Annunziata is spectacular. Aged for two years in 25-hectoliter Slavonian barrels, it is flush with woven aromas of licorice, raspberry liqueur, pressed roses, and crushed stones. Full-bodied, with a weightless feel, fine-grained tannins, and fresh acidity, it offers a seamless arch through the mid-palate, without any harsh edges, and is packed with ripe red cherry, cedar, black tea, and dried flowers. Drink 2025-2045.

    2019 Renato Ratti Barolo Serradenari
    Piedmont, ITALY
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

    Other Reviews....
This is the first release of Serradenari from Ratti, and it's one of the highest MGAs at around 500 metres – the estate harvested it after Rocche dell'Annunziata. Indeed, this Barolo could seem to be a Langhe for its elegant lightness to the fore. Very pale ruby in colour, it's reductive with notes of cinnamon root, camphor, a balsamic character, and some peachy fruit. Super-fresh and with firm, chewy tannins on a light frame, it's well handled thanks to the combination of both large oak vessels and barrique. A bit rustic at the end. Drink: 2023-2035.

Very perfumed with orange peel, hibiscus, and sliced strawberry aromas that follow through to a full body with layers of tannins and a juicy and chewy finish. A little traditional but solid. Give it time. Try after 2027.

There is a more pronounced wood presence in the inaugural release of the 2019 Barolo Serradenari, which spent one year in French barrique followed by a year in Slavonian cask. Ripe with toasted cedar, sour cherry, incense, and orange peel, this medium to full-body red offers a rounded mid-palate with a sheen of ripe tannins and oak spice. It is ample in structure, but not weighted, with angular tannins and fresh acidity, while clove, raspberry seed, and tobacco fill the palate. It feels a bit heavy-handed with its barrel usage right now for my taste and needs another couple of years to integrate. Drink 2025-2040.

"Living up to its name, 1792 Sweet Wheat is indeed sweet, and offers it with ample depth and range." - breakingbourbon.com

This is Barton 1792 distillery’s first-ever wheated Bourbon, where the wheat replaces rye as the ‘spice’ ingredient (similar to Weller and Maker’s Mark). It's only been available in Australia sporadically. Once again, we've received a tiny allocation. 45.6% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Easy to drink, reasonably priced for its quality, and has a creamy mouthfeel that will ultimately become its most memorable trait. 1792 Sweet Wheat is a gentle, easy-to-drink wheated bourbon. Its palate is pleasing with its traditional bourbon flavors and semi-sweet notes. It also has a good amount of oak on its palate. This actually might be a determent for some expecting a sweet-forward profile based on the bourbon's name, with the oak notes probably countering what might have been a far sweeter bourbon. Some tannic notes also find their way into the mix, and while they don’t taint the experience much, I would have liked less of them. 1792 Sweet Wheat doesn’t far exceed the quality found in other similar priced wheated bourbon, but it does what it does well, and is priced reasonably for what it is. - breakingbourbon.com

...A sweet and fruity whiskey, with vanilla wafer, cotton candy, caramel custard, blackberry, and ripe peach. Soft oak spice and polished leather on the finish keep the sweetness in check. Very gentle in personality; a great starter bourbon. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: John Hansell 2015

Crafted in the opulent Graham’s house style, these age-statement Tawnies are known for their richness, smooth texture, and generous dried fruit character. Extended cask ageing in Vila Nova de Gaia brings layered complexity and mellow spice.

    Other Reviews....
A step up on the tawny ladder, reflected by the paler tawny colour and copperish tones on the rim; a touch singed on the nose with roasted coffee and an undertone of crème brûlée on the nose and palate (queimada in Portuguese). Concentrated butterscotch sweetness, a touch honeyed but not cloying as the acidity cuts in and offsets this, leading to a long, beautifully poised finish.

Dried cherries, plums and candied fruit with some figs on the nose. Light toffee, too. Medium-to full-bodied, very sweet and layered with dried fruit, smoked wood, caramel and hints of stems. Some dried earth and salted nuts. Very complex. Drink now.

Broad in feel and dark in profile, with walnut and hazelnut notes followed by flavors of brown bread, dried fig, bitter orange, singed almond and juniper. A lovely flash of green tea adds sparkle and detail on the finish, but this stays reliant on its bass line throughout. Drink now.

Remarkably, this is able to show age and long cask aging, but the flavor is still here: figs and honey, balanced out with burnt caramel aged acidity and a rich (but not sweet) finish. Excellent, top quality aged tawny.

Royal Brackla Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND

    $1799.88 Dozen

Upping the value in the Sherry-matured stakes. "Excellent" - whiskyfun.com

As part of its program to make single malts available from all five of its distilleries, Bacardi subsidiary, John Dewar & Sons has been releasing a bunch of Brackla age statements since 2015. With a house style that's pedestrian and fruity, this edition offers something unexpected in the form of an Oloroso sherry cask finish. Even more importantly, it's bottled at 46% without chill filtration (the regular stuff weighs in at 40%). Here's just one of many positive customer comments about this whisky online: "... it blows away anything I've tasted from Macallan and at higher cost...probably shouldn't say all this as it might go up in price..."

Give Brackla twenty minutes to breathe and you'll definitely find similarities to Macallan Sherry Oak 12, or even Glengoyne 18YO, but it delivers more concentration and mouthfeel due to a higher abv and zero-filtration. The flavour focus falls firmly on fruity-nutty Oloroso, so less American oak intrudes to dumb-down the experience. Allspice and cocoa are capped off by tantalising suggestions of dry Guyanese rum, while the overall balance is near perfect. A hidden gem from an obscure distillery beckons...

Gold - Distillers' Single Malts 12 years and under - 2022, International Spirits Challenge

Other reviews... Nutty on the nose, with peanut brittle, then buttered pecan and vanilla-almond ice creams. There are nice fruity notes as well, like baked red apples and Bosc pears, plus cinnamon, fresh challah, orange peel, and dried leaves. Creamy and smooth on the palate, with melted milk chocolate, tiramisu, crème brûlée, and light pepper spice. Espresso and cream highlight a lengthy and excellent finish. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Apparently and unless I'm wrong once more, this is the new-new label, even more retro than before. This baby was finished in oloroso wood while the presentation tube would make it clear that it should display 'spice, cherries and demerara'. I believe the mistake they did with the previous rendition (round blue label) was to bottle it at 40% vol. Colour: amber. Nose: and voilà, butterscotch, praline, roasted chestnuts, chocolate (creamy Lindt's), nougat and cappuccino. No one can be against this, even if this smart treatment may have erased a part of the Distillery character. I do find gooseberries in the background, having said that. Mouth: I could copy-and-paste what I have jotted down about the nose. Milk chocolate, roasted nuts, marmalade, toffee… St. Oloroso, pray for us. Finish: rather long, very good. Coffee drops and, there, since I'm in a good mood, Demerara sugar. Seriously, Demerara sugar. Comments: amen. Excellent. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

With 40 years ageing in small lodge pipes (casks of around 600 litres), 50% of the original volume has been lost to evaporation: the age is evident in the copper-toned greenish tinge and the sweeter more concentrated style. Demerara sugar and spice with glorious length and richness, yet it still retains some youthful clarity on the finish. This fine-tuned blend of old wines going back to the 1970s is one to sip, admire, meditate and marvel.

    Mandarine Napoleon Liqueur (700ml)
    BELGIUM
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

Mandarines and tangerines were introduced to Europe in the early 1800s, and were considered exotic fruits with medicinal qualities. It became fashionable to infuse the fruits in cognac and to drink the results. Napoleon was himself partial to such drinks and frequently invited one of its greatest exponents, Antoine-Francois du Fourcroy, to indulge in the beverage. It is said to be Fourcroy's formula with which Napoleon wooed his favourite actress, Mlle Mars.

Fourcroy's "Mandarine Napoleon" is now manufactured by the internationally renowned Belgian company which bears his name. The liqueur is made by macerating mandarine peel in selected fine brandies. After maceration and distillation, the spirit is compounded with the flavour and sweetened to produce a lightly flavoured unique product. Mandarine Napoleon today forms a classic base for a whole range of drinks and cocktails. It also makes a very pleasant summer long drink when mixed with tonic or orange juice. 38% alc./vol.

Other reviews... This gorgeous golden-orange liqueur bears fresh mandarin/tangerine aromas. The body is thick and buttery, and the palate follows the nose, but here the bold fruit flavor is well balanced with a tingling spiciness and notes of nutmeg and cinnamon. The finish is long and spicy/sweet. 92 points - wineenthusiast.com

    ABV: 40%

A deep amber to copper coloured Anejo offering appealing aromas of dried fruits, split cedar, mesquite smoke and faintly terpenic notes. Less definition on the palate with a low-key agave character that takes a few minutes to open up, and there's some resemblance to sherried single malts as flavours of dried fruits, peppercorns and vanillan oak come to the fore. The finish is sedate, mildly sweet and buttery but not long. Better after air contact. 40% Alc.Vol.

    $1079.88 Dozen

The youngest member of the Sierra Antiguo family is aged for 26-months in oak (presumably the colour has been filtered out before bottling). It offers medium-fresh aromas of green olive brine, paprika, dill pickle and resin that follow in a smooth, rounded Blanco with flavours of salted lime, juicy agave, white pepper and mineral. Those notes glide through to a warming, oily, sappy finish adding hints of green capsicum and pipe tobacco. Get past the hackneyed presentation and this delivers impressive body and mouthfeel - especially given its entry-level ABV. 40% Alc./Vol.

From a 3.2ha block of shiraz, planted on the far western side at Yarra Yering in 1973. Half was fermented with 20% whole bunches in one 3,500L old oak cask, pressed and returned to this cask to mature for 12 months. The other half was matured in puncheons for 12 months. A very bright, medium crimson purple. A riotous amalgam of aromas including blueberries, potpourri, licorice root, Szechuan pepper and caraway seeds. Medium bodied and elegant, this has terrific viscosity and the tannins are oh, so powdery and fine. Gorgeous now and over the next 10 years or longer. Drink 2022 - 2035.

From the 1969-planted cabernet from the southwest corner of the No 1 block. Destemmed and crushed into the 600kg Yarra Yering fermenters, with some extended maceration before maturation in French barrels for 15 months (30% new). A deep crimson purple. An incredibly complex nose with its core of fresh blackcurrant and cherry as well as cassis, graphite, bay leaf, black olive and cedar from the perfectly handled and already integrated oak. Darkly fruited on the palate, this iron fist in a velvet glove textured and structured wine is worth every cent of its lofty asking price. Drink 2022 - 2035.

Another beautiful wine from Laurent, his 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is a classic blend of 82% Grenache, 5% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, and the rest Vaccarese and Counoise, all from the northern part of the appellation, aged in tank. Perfumed red fruits, rose petals, spice, and sappy, peppery garrigue all flow to a medium to full-bodied, seamless 2020 with silky tannins, wonderful balance, and a great finish. It needs 3-5 years in the cellar to hit the early stages of its drink window, where it should keep nicely for over a decade. Drink: 2022-2033.

Little herbal note to the fruit bringing some complexity, this is saline, light, fresh, fluid and drinkable. Plenty of texture and interest to the fruit, with really searching tannins. Needs time to come round, will be elegant and charming when it does. Fruit, structure, fragrance and energy - it's got the lot. Very Charvin. Organically grown in the northwest of the appellation, in lieux-dits Cabrières and Maucoil where there's galets roulés and sand. It's fermented and then aged for 21 months in concrete using indigenous yeasts, then bottled unfiltered. Drink: 2025-2032.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape showed brilliantly and is certainly one of the stars in the vintage. Based on 55% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, and the rest Syrah and other permitted varieties, it shines for its elegance and purity, offering a wonderful core of red and black fruits, medium to full body, silky, incredibly polished tannins, flawless balance, and already complex notes of flowers, sappy garrigue, Provençal spice. It has the estate's incredible ability to bring wonderful intensity and richness while staying graceful and seamless. Dr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards in the area, with its steep blue slate slopes and eponymous sundial a beacon for the area. Wines from here are often some of the finest and most elegant expressions of Riesling, and with age further express their mineral slate origins.

A touch of beeswax and dried lemon peel flickers on the shy nose of 2017 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve. It was harvested in the Laychen parcel from ancient vines of up to 130 years of age. More air intensifies these notions that continue right through onto the palate. The body is concentrated, sinuous, elegant and comes with a flavor suggesting lemon-scented stearin, imbued with salty notions and lovely highlights of ripe, juicy lemon. The result is a wine that seemingly draws you down into stony depth. Vivid, smooth, poised, juicy and mellow, despite the bright lemon notes. Elixir-like. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Russet pear peel and ripe, golden pear juice appear first on the nose of the 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Unterst Pichter Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve. The palate has a wonderfully light texture and yet is dense with flavor and a smooth richness suggesting dried lemon peel, pear peel, subtle wax and tingling notions reminiscent of spiced apple. The finish is poised, extended, absolutely elegant and defined by ripe lemon freshness. Compact, concentrated, serene. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

What a beautiful combination of toastiness, candied citrus and pineapple plus notes of dried strawberry and allspice this stunning Wurzgarten GG has. Great concentration and power, yet still only medium-bodied this has an impressive vitality for its age at the compact long finish. Drink or hold.

2017 Dr Loosen Erdener Pralat Reserve Riesling Grosses Gewachs
    Mosel, GERMANY
    $399. 00

    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

Erdener Prälat is perhaps the greatest vineyard in the Mosel region. It benefits from its 45° slope with perfect southern exposure, red slate soil and proximity to the river. All these factors, combined with its position below huge, heat-retaining cliffs, explain why Dr. Loosen never harvests anything less than Auslese ripeness from this site.

    Other Reviews....
The 2017 Erdener Prälat Réserve Alte Reben is pure, fine and flinty on the beautifully aromatic nose that reveals tropical fruit aromas intertwined with delicate slate tones and remains utterly refined. Lush and elegant on the palate, this is a fruity, saline and sustainable, very intense and stimulating Prälat with gorgeous hedonistic features. The wine is enormously aromatic and fruity, with mango and peach aromas and everything that's yellow and lush, but it also has this superb finesse of the red slate in the Prälat and reflects its sunny exposition adjacent to the riverside. 3,743 bottles filled. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Release date: March 1, 2023. Drink 2024 - 2050.

The nose of the 2017 Riesling Erdener Prälat Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve takes some swirling but the Erdener Prälat comes alive with gentle hints of spiced orange: think subtle clove and Navel peel joined by notions of dried lemon rind. The texture is serene, smooth, utterly compact and filled with flavors of wax, lemon and slightly bitter, dried lemon zest that seems to be dissolved in subtle oiliness. A wonderful sensation on the palate, utterly bright, deeply salty and effortlessly elegant. Wow. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Enormously dense nose of mango and papaya. Gigantic concentration and power for a German dry riesling this inhabits its own habitat on Planet Mosel. Brain-rattling intensity and energy at the moment, so we recommend decanting and using large glasses. Better still, give this a few more years in the bottle. Either way this should silence any doubters about this category. Drink or hold.

Fourth-generation vigneron Fabien Coche took over his family’s domaine in 2005. Hailing from one of Burgundies most famed families (Coche-Dury was part of the same domaine until 1940 and is run by his cousin Raphael), Fabien has quickly become the Coche of the current generation making the most waves. His enviable vineyard holdings total nearly 11 hectares spread across Meursault, Monthelie, Pommard and Auxey-Duresses. Organic farming has been practiced here since 1998 for the 40 plots of vines that the family owns. Average vine age is impressive with more than 60% of vines over 60 years old.

Les Luchets lies above the village quite high on the slope, which is where many of the younger vignerons favour for cooler more mineral wines terroir and better natural acidity.

The 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben shows an intense, elegant and coolish bouquet of ripe, bright fruits and flint stones. An exquisitely creamy sense of lemon pervades the nose of the 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben, almost as of lemon posset. With more air, notions of tangerine peel appear with much aromatic appeal. The palate reinforces all this wonderful zestiness shimmering with ripe Amalfi lemon and tangerine. This is marked by a delightful serenity, great concentration and an intense saltiness that, along with the zestiness, makes the palate tingle. Glorious, dry, statuesque. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Cool and herbal, but well-balanced and elegant this 2021 riesling GG has an appealing silkiness in spite of the lemony acidity. The positive tannins build at the long, structured finish. Although this site has a reputation for wines that show really well early in their life this really needs some time. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

Loosen's 2021 Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben is remarkably refined on the nose that exhibits a delicate and flinty-scented bright stone fruit and Riesling aroma. Very stony and refined, this is beautifully structured and has tons of crushed stone minerality. Highland Park 30 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Orkney Islands, SCOTLAND
    $2799. 00
    Bottle
    $33588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.7%

PLEASE NOTE: Packaging may vary from batch to batch

There have been a number of releases of HP 30 over the years, each with slightly different packaging and ABVs. This one was reportedly released around 2013. When Highland Park's robust and oily new make gets extended time in a high proportion of refill and first-fill sherry European and American oak casks, the resulting flavour profile is astonishingly complex. Expect the fudgy sweetness found in the more mature expressions, paired with layers of aromatic spice, dark chocolate orange and floral peat notes. 45.7% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This edition is nothing short of an exquisite whisky. There’s no modern cask manipulation nor hasty finishing here – just great distillate filled into great casks which have then been highly sympathetically integrated after three decades of patience. Whilst the age of the whisky is apparent throughout with a palpable sense of highly polished oak - this never detracts from the fruity core of the spirit which runs from nose through to finish. The smoke influence is but a mere memory here - you’ll need to dig to find it - so if you like your heathery peat prominent this will not tick that box for you. However, as far as elegance and equipoise go – there is not a large number of whiskies of this style which will better this. - thedramble.com

2015 Amrut Single Cask #3897 Australian Exclusive Ex-Oloroso Sherry Butt 7 Year Old Single Malt Indian Whisky (700ml)
    Bangalore, INDIA
    $230. 00

    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 60%

In countries of warmer climes you don't have to wait too long for good whisky to mature. That doesn't mean great whisky is easily come by. Every barrel is different. Only a handful attain a singular classification - and that's if you can find and bottle them at just the right time. When Amrut's Head of Distilling, Ashok Chokalingam visited with a sample of 'Sherry butt #38977', it was clear it had become something of a pet project. Mollycoddled until the end, he didn't want to filter the whisky but didn't want all of the sediment either, so he 'dripped in' the required amount of water to cut it to 60%, one drop at a time over three days. The water pulled the sediment to the bottom and the liquid was syphoned into bottles. Utmost care was taken to retain all of the fats and oils that would have been lost via filtration, which is what gives this such a terrific mouthfeel. The rest is down to an extraordinary barrel. One taste and it dawns on you why Ashok and the importers fell in love with this particular cask: Sherry almost hits perfection. The aroma opens with classic Oloroso notes of fig and raisin before roasted nuts and cocoa become palpable as the fruit sweetness fades. The flavour explosion happens in slow motion, with Oloroso carried on a wave of creamy malt, capped off by mixed peels, orange chocolate, leather, walnut cake and a fanfare of allspice. A biscuity-saline edge adds interest (possibly from the lightly peated barley) before the sherry gets a second wind, significantly extending the aftertaste. Not only encapsulating the general excellence of this distillery, Butt #3897 demonstrates how some single casks - regardless of age - justify a premium when they outperform bottlings with much bigger age statements. Filled in July 2015 and decanted in December 2022, 216 bottles are on offer exclusively to Australia. 60% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Glenfiddich Perpetual Collection Vat 01 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $159. 99

    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The Perpetual series was unveiled in mid 2022 as travel retail exclusives. Four whiskies showing off the distillery’s signature solera vat maturation process make up the range. The vat system never runs dry. Instead, a portion is removed and the remainder is topped up with fresh liquid. This allows the latest batch to take on some characteristics of the older product. The process originated from Spanish sherry production, which Glenfiddich’s fifth Malt Master, David Stewart adapted in 1998 to produce their core 15-year-old single malt. According to him, it allows whisky from different casks to better integrate. Only half the whisky in Glenfiddich’s large solera vats is bottled at any one time.

Of the four malts in the Perpetual Collection, the most easily approached is Vat 01, a combination of Bourbon and wine cask-matured whiskies that's sweet, soft, and smooth. Glenfiddich have honed the style over the decades and in this bottling, they've perfected the art of delivering a 40% abv whisky with character or depth. Admittedly, its predictable fusion of creamy, biscuity malt and subtle nashi pear fruitiness resembles many other Glenfiddichs, but when you just want a decent dram at a fair price, consistency and reliability is often a big part of the equation. Incentivise further with a one-litre format and you have an easy buying decision.

Aged in Spanish sherry casks, Vat 02 presents a more complex and luscious character. Both have no age statements. The 15-year-old Vat 03 showcases Glenfiddich’s signature style. Matured in European oak sherry and Bourbon casks, it's silky and full-bodied delivering warm notes of spice, nutty marzipan, and dried figs. The final in the series is also deemed the most extravagant. Vat 04 is treated in oloroso sherry and Bourbon casks for 18 years for a deeper profile.

Notes from the producers... Beautifully fragrant and floral. Summer blossom notes with hints of creamy vanilla toffee and subtle oakiness. A touch of zesty citrus in the background. TASTE: Very soft and mellow with a lovely balance of oak and the trademark Glenfiddich character. Layers of sweetness and spice with hints of freshly ground pepper. FINISH: Delicate and smooth.

Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.

Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.

Fruit for this Monthelie Rouge has an average vine age of 40 years sourced from three different parcels, Les Plantes, Les Longenes, and Les Sous Court. Vinification includes a 5 hours cold maceration before fermentaiton in stainless steel, before being pressed to barrel for 18 months in oak, 20% of which are new.

Tres Tribus Ensamble Joven Mezcal (700ml)
    Oaxaca, MEXICO
    $124. 99
    Bottle
    $1499.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

A small batch mezcal hand-crafted by fifth generation Mezcalero, Juan Antonio Coronel and named after the three tribes of Oaxaca. 'Ensamble' simply means it's made from a combination of agaves rather than a single variety. Because Coronel insists on traditional methods, his agaves are allowed to grow for years, sometimes decades, until they're fully mature. In this case, the blend includes wild Salmiana ranging from 15 up to 35 years old, wild Jabalí averaging between 10 and 15 years old, and farmed Espadins harvested at around 8 years. The agave hearts are roasted according to traditional methods. Local water combined with wild yeasts kick start the week-long fermentation in clay jars. Distillation takes place in a still designed and hand-built by Coronel using copper and local elements from the region. He also has a replanting program that replenishes agave harvested in the wild as well as trees used in the production process; For every wild agave he cuts, he replants four new ones. Coronel's 'Ensamble' opens with soft, approachable scents developing a sweet, earthy edge suggesting wet clay, lucerne mulch, dried thyme and white pepper. Those notes are echoed by beautifully integrated flavours in an oily-yet-tangy, agave driven mid-palate that gives way to mesquite smoke, white chocolate and hints of bicycle tube, trailing off in a fruity, pepper and brine finish. It's a terrific assemblage to enjoy on its own, but one that should also make a strong contribution to cocktails. 44% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Alluring notes of jasmine, mango and honey with a delicate minerality. The mid-palate of cooked agave showcases a toasty elegance as well as hints of stone fruit with a long finish of citrus and earthy flavors. Fantastic sipped alongside fresh and zingy food, it'll also make a great Mezcal Manhattan.

    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $1399. 00
    Bottle
    $16788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

In an era of escalating prices on big age-statement, sherry matured malts, Glenfarclas continues to buck market trends offering a seriously old whisky at a reasonable price. Rumoured to have been introduced due to dwindling stocks of the 40 year old, this is a relatively new member of the Glenfarclas family, and we're told, an extremely limited one at that; (at the time of writing, it's not even listed on the distillery's website). As with the increasingly hard-to-find 30 and 40YOs, the 35 was drawn from Spanish oak ex-sherry casks and comes presented in an eye-catching red box, reminiscent of the distillery's iconic warehouse doors. The liquid inside promises decadent flavours of toffee, chocolate and dried fruits in a silky, medium bodied dram. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Very mild on the tongue. All sorts of sherry flavors, raisins, figs, and a lot more. Orange peels In 2024 I'll notice dark chocolate and sandalwood. Finish: The spice comes through a little more here. Anise and cinnamon. Sweet dried fruits are still there. 2024 and a little more specific: tobacco, sandalwood, cherry, dark chocolate, cocoa. Really nice and very long finish. - whiskybase.com

In Scottish terminology, ‘The Laird’ refers to the Lord of the Manor. This single vineyard Shiraz comes from an old vineyard in Marananga planted in 1958, a plot which remains the focus of envy amongst many of the region's winemakers. Previously owned and operated by the legendary Malcolm Seppelt, the vineyard was purchased by Torbreck in 2014 and is perfectly sited with the dry grown, original Barossa clone vines facing south east. The berries are typically small and concentrated and usually harvested in two separate passes.
The French oak selected for the maturation of this wine is considered to be some of the finest in the world. Referred to as Dominique Laurent's 'Magic Casks', the wood is selected from the incredibly tiny and highly prized Troncais forest. The staves are hand split in the French tradition and twice as thick as machine split staves.
As a result of the extra thickness the barrels are able to sustain an extended maturation process due to the tighter porosity that comes with the extra wood.
Maturation took place in the new hand crafted French oak barriques for a period of 36 months. The barrels were stored in their own temperature controlled, ancient stone shed. In short, no expense has been spared.
Dense inky black heart with a very deep black dark red hue. Soaring out of the glass are potent ripe blackberry, liquorice, black cherry and dark chocolate aromas that are totally intoxicating. Also chiming in are toasty vanilln oak, earthy mocha, hints of new leather and pepper. About as concentrated and powerful as a wine can get, it boasts out of this world richness, decadence and power along with a liqueur like density. Mouth coating flavours of lush blackberry, liquorice and black cherry stain the palate backed by a firm muscular tannin structure that is largely absorbed by the sheer weight of voluptuous fruit. Toasty vanillin oak, earthy mocha characters, traces of boot polish and pepper lend further complexity. Finishes exceptionally long, deep and opulent.
Drink over the next 10-20 years.

Single-vineyard wines that are at the behest and mercy of the seasons are very exciting to view over time. You understand the essence of the style of the wine and the vineyard DNA, so you sit, patiently waiting for the vintages and seasons that meet your personal proclivities to roll around. The 2018 vintage is one of those for me, as will be the cool 2021 and 2022 seasons. The fruit is sourced from the Gnadenfrei vineyard, which was planted in 1958, in Marananga. The fruit was picked over a variety of picks at optimal ripeness and matured for 36 months in new French oak barriques by Dominique Laurent. Eminently red-fruited in the mouth, this 2018 The Laird is reflective of the 2018 season, in that it is pure, fresh, laden with blood plum, saturated in red berries and framed by savory, exotically spiced black tannins. The oak, while a prominent feature of the wine, supports the fruit at all times and assists in extending the flavor through the finish. Thick in the mouth, yet still fresh, there is a moreish quality to this wine. I love it. (It is likely unnecessary to tell you that the wine is incredibly full-bodied. It is enveloping and huge but wonderful.) Drink 2023-2053.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

It is funny how truly great wines make me think of another other than wine. When I first inhaled the scent of 2018 The Laird, I heard music, which was somewhat unnerving. The phenomenal perfume here conjured up Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave – a distant musical memory from my youth. I have never seen this famous sea cave firsthand, so I searched for it on my phone while diving into this glass. If this wine looks like any marine geological formation, it must be this incredible cavern on the uninhabited island of Staffa. It is fantastic to think that Mendelssohn sat in a boat, off Staffa, in 1829 and penned a couple of bars of music inspired by this cave. Some 15 years later, the first vines were planted in Barossa. I suppose it is somewhat of a tradition for me not to bang on about fruit, flowers, herbs and spices when writing about tremendously moving wines preferring to take my readers to a more emotional place in the hope that they are moved enough to seek out the subject of my musings. In this instance, I cannot get over my Fingal’s Cave spark, and I think it sums up the absurdly deep and never-ending joy that this sublime wine imbues in its taster. Drink 2030 – 2050.

Thomas Bouley is very much the insiders secret, more famous with his fellow vignerons than with collectors chasing the next 'superstar' seen on social media. That Thomas resists putting his name on the front label of his wines (preferring to keep his father's) is typical of his humble and low key approach. Based in Volnay may also add to his relative anonymity, however we suspect this is changing rapidly as word gets out of just how spectacular his wines are, and of the continual improvement seen since he began working with his father in the early 2000's.

Meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery are notable here, and key to why Thomas is so highly regarded by his peers. Yields are moderate, and in the cellar whole cluster ferments are used more with his clay rich sites (Pommard Fremiers, Volnay Clos des Chenes), while those with thin white soils (Pommard Rugiens-Hauts, Volnay Caillerets) are largely destemmed. New oak use is minimal, and each wine spend two winters on fine lees before bottling.

Full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it's broad shouldered and fleshy, with lively acids and a long, expansive finish. Drink 2030 - 2050.

Aromas of wild berries, dark chocolate, sweet spices, licorice and rose petals preface the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, a full-bodied, ample and layered wine that's rich, powerful and gourmand, with a ripe core of fruit, powdery tannins and succulent balancing acids. It's a compelling success, but it will reward some bottle age. Drink 2030 - 2055.

Wafting from the glass with notes of sweet cherries, strawberries, vine smoke, raw cocoa and spices, the 2020 Pommard Village is medium to full-bodied, cool and layered, with terrific depth at the core and a lively spine of acidity that carries through the long, saline finish. As usual, the blend is dominated by the cool, northeasterly exposures of the windy lieu-dit of Valmuriens. Drink 2025 - 2045.

A blend of 85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay based on the 2018 vintage (65%) with the balance made up of reserve wines. Matured on lees for 30 months. A nimble mousse dissipates to reveal a pale straw coloured base with apricot gold tinged edges that’s threaded by a fine bead that shows excellent persistence. Elevated pear and strawberry aromas are followed by some yeast lees, brioche and citrus notes. Quite full and expansive in the mouth the palate features a complex flavour profile of ripe pear, baked bread, yeast lees, strawberry and refreshing citrus. Dry chalk tinged finish with crisp acidity and a highly flavoursome yet focused aftertaste.

Disgorged JAN21. A blend of 85% pinot noir and 15% chardonnay. Mostly 2018 vintage but with 35% reserve wine, which is no slouch. Organic farmed. I really like these Champagnes.
Sweet perfume with just-ripe apricot, coconut, nougat with Parisian almonds in the mix. Pretty. The palate is zesty in bubbles, creamy yet light on with a sense of elegance and freshness writ large. Poised. Good detail of yeasty complexity on green apple with grapefruit pithy coolness and zing. Delightful and feels fancy. Drink 2023-2030.

Pronounced ripe black cherry and liquorice aromas infused with smoky cedar and clove mix with dried herb, earth and peppered dried meat notes. Rich and fleshy textured the full bodied palate features spicy black cherry and liquorice fruits over a back drop of toasty vanillin cedar, earthy graphite, dried meats and peppered herb characters. The Lark Distillery Tasmanian Peated Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

A new Lark made using their own Central Highlands Lake district peat bog. The distillery employs an innovative post-malt smoking process resulting in a different flavour profile than traditionally peated whisky. In fact, the Scotch Whisky Industry have shown particular interest in their proprietary method. The peat is influenced by the decaying forest matter of the Tasmanian vegetation surrounding the bog. This is not comparable with anything you might consider peaty from Scotland. In fact, most will find the smoke indiscernible. Arguably, it has contributed a light oiliness and some bush character to the sweetness of the malt, specifically a sense of native flora in nuances of roasted wattle seed, wild aniseed and pepper berry. It's all extremely subtle. Put peat to one side, and this is a completely satisfactory whisky boasting balance and impressive purity. 46% Alc/Vol.

Other reviews... Lark’s way of smoking its malt has always been a bit different, taking already malted barley and smoking it over Tasmnian highland peat rather than using imported smoked grain. The result is Lark Tasmanian Peated, the first 100% Australian smoked whisky ever made. Incredibly well integrated on the nose, like gently smoked honey, there’s none of the aggressive iodine and campfire you get from smoky Scotch. Lanolin, plum pudding and pipe tobacco combine to form the memory of Grandpa’s jumper. Quite sweet on the palate as the fortified wine casks make their presence known, and with a soft texture that could use just a little more weight. The finish offers gentle, earthy smoke and minerality that speaks to the Tasmanian highlands that inspired this whisky. Where the Classic Cask is almost too subtle, this is nuanced in all the right ways. An incredibly enjoyable whisky and a true Aussie classic. 96 points - Fred Siggins, winecompanion.com.au

2022 British Navy Pussers Rum Deptford Dockyard Reserve Navy Proof Rum (700ml)
    Caribbean,
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.5%

Voted World's Best Pot & Column still Rum at the World Rum Awards 2020.

In 1742, Deptford Dockyard was the Royal Navy Victualling Board’s main spirit depot; housing 30 storage vats that accommodated and aged more than 250,000 gallons of rum. From here, they supplied the Fleet with a flavourful blend of ‘Empire’ rums from British Navy suppliers in the Caribbean. While little is known about early Admiralty specifications, the blend was done “in such proportion as experience had shown was preferred by the men.”

As is now popular rum folklore, the final daily rum ration was served on 31 July 1970 at 6 bells in the forenoon watch (11am), ending a Royal Navy tradition of more than 300 years. Some sailors wore black armbands, tots were 'buried at sea' and in one navy training camp there was a mock funeral procession complete with black coffin and accompanying drummers and piper.

To commemorate the 52nd anniversary of Black Tot Day, as it became known, Pusser’s have introduced a limited-edition Deptford Dockyard Reserve at Navy proof, featuring a blend of high-ester distillates from Caribbean countries in Great Britain’s naval past (Guyana [Demerara], Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica). Offered at the same strength that bulk underproof rum was historically stored at the Dockyards, the hefty ABV is intimidating until you taste it. Aged for a minimum of three years in x-Bourbon barrels but tasting much, much older, Deptford Dockyard is a medium-bodied rum, shy on the nose while boasting beautifully integrated flavours of Christmas cake, orange zest and festive spices that draw comparisons to heavily sherried single malt. Its restrained power dials down with liquorice bullets, chico lollies, cinnamon buns, brandy sauce and lingering molasses cake. Easily approached uncut, think of it as a cross between richer, darker Demerara styles and high ester Jamaicans - less the extreme funk. 54.5% Alc./Vol.

Roc Breïa is an exciting new project in the Maconnais led by Chassagne-Montrachet's Theo Dancer (of Domaine Vincent Dancer fame). In 2021, Theo was invited to visit a mature, 10-hectare vineyard in the Bray district of the Maconnais that two investors had recently purchased. Dancer immediately saw the potential of the mature vines and limestone-rich soils. He agreed to manage the project, but only on the condition that he could control everything. Taking over in July 2021, with the help of full-time vigneron Bastien Cubillé, Dancer immediately began raising the vineyard work to his standards, bringing the soils and vines back into balance, planting cover crops, and cultivating inter-vine.

    Other Reviews....
Tasted from multiple barrels shortly before bottling, Théo Dancer's Roc Breïa 2021 Chardonnay offers up inviting aromas of orchard fruit and orange oil mingled with nuances of freshly baked bread, sweet stones, beeswax and nutmeg. Medium-bodied, fleshy and incisive, with tangy acids and a long, saline finish, it's a terrific debut effort for this new project. Maturation was in used 500-liter barrels.

The Roc Breïa 2021 Pinot Noir is just as charming as its white counterpart, bursting with aromas of red berries, plums, rose petals and orange rind. Medium-bodied, open and supple, with melting tannins and a lively, succulent profile, it will drink well on release. The Pinot Noir was vinified with some 50% whole bunch this year, followed by maturation in large used barrels.

Théo Dancer is the ambitious and tallented winemaker now heading up the family Domaine Vincent Dancer winery based in Chassagne-Montrachet. Like his father before him, Théo studied at Lycée Viticole de Beaune while working with his father part-time. He joined the domaine full-time in 2021 and is already making a significant impact. In addition to his work with his father, Théo has also taken on an exciting new project in the Mâconnais (Roc Breïa) as well as starting his own micro-négoce, sourcing fruit from several exciting vineyards across northern France.

Emphasising purity and terroir rather than flor-aging notes, this is Savagnin ouillé (topped up) sourced from the fossil-rich marl soils of L’Étoile, in Jura’s southwest. The grapes were pressed and put directly into large oak barrels.

Other reviews... This Jamaican rum-finished Cardhu has a nose dominated by grapefruit flesh, with white pepper, ripening mango, zested lime, clementine peel, and grilled pineapple. The palate has bitter citrus and grapefruit acidity, pepper, clove, and a belligerent rush of cask-strength alcohol that cries out to be quelled with water. Once subdued, the rum sweetness shines alongside flavors of dried mango, green banana, vanilla, and aniseed. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...More of this year's very esoteric and lavishly illustrated Special Releases. This one matured in refill American oak and was then finished in Jamaican rum. They've also filled some of those very lovely 20cl bottles, as they did in the past with some Port Ellens and some… Loch Dhu. And the Classic Malts, naturally. No, nothing to do with shrinkflation. Colour: white wine. Nose: a little fruity glue at first, or nail polish, with some peach and strawberry syrups, then indeed a few tropical fruits from the rum, mostly pineapples, as well as fresh raisin rolls. This was finished in Jamaican pot-still rum but I'm not fining anything really 'funky'. Probably not what they would have tried to come up with in the first place. With water: perhaps, indeed, a little olive oil, which would make the texture rather a little thicker on the nose. Some good folks are making chocolate using olive oil, which I find rather good too. Nice nose, nonetheless. Mouth (neat): really to my liking, rather spicy but more malt whisky than rumsky, if you see what I mean. It's just a little hot. More raisin rolls. With water: the rum's influence got more obvious, with more pineapple, a little more olive oil, Juicy Fruit… Finish: medium, on allspice, honey and, perhaps, papaya ice cream. A touch of viognier too but indeed, viognier can get very tropical. A wee salty smokiness in the aftertaste. Comments: you could argue that we need no one's help to make our own rumskies (try 85% young Highland Park or Clynelish with 15% young Hampden or Worthy Park, for example) but it's good. Wat's more, I don't think 'Cardhu needs rum' was the message in the first place, was it? 85 points - whiskyfun.com
