    $2640.00 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2023-2031)
    ABV: 12.5%

The 2015 Brut Blanc de Blancs is exclusively made from Chardonnay selected from the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs : Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.
A buoyant and lacy mousse slowly subsides to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has a steady stream of generous bubbles rising through to the surface. Toasty pear and citrus aromas are intermeshed with roasted almond, yeast lees and chalky mineral notes. Focused and energetic yet fluffy in its feel across the palate, pear, green apple, citrus, yeast lees and roasted almond flavours overlay an oyster shell and chalky mineral back drop. Invigorating acidity lends tension to the long, dry sculptured finish.

An organic wine, the Ceretto 2019 Barolo Bussia is a wine of beautiful depth and streamlined intensity. This Barolo offers dark fruit flavors, but you also get crushed stone, rust, a touch of exotic spice or grilled herb and fresh licorice root. The ensemble is beautiful, and what stands out most is the polished endurance and silky consistency of the mouthfeel. Drink 2025 - 2048.

The 2019 Barolo Bussia is rich, deep and explosive, with all the deeply-pitched, spice and balsamic notes that are so typical of Bussia in full display. A broad, ample Barolo, the Bussia is seriously impressive from start to finish. All the elements are so well balanced. There's plenty of tannin, but it is all nicely integrated into the wine's frame. Time in the glass brings out the wine's inner perfume and explosive energy. This aromatically beguiling, layered Barolo is superb. Drink 2029-2044.

A fine and open grained Bussia with a smoky, grilled meat and spice character to the plum fruit. Medium to full body. Soft and velvety and juicy. This will develop into something very serious. Needs three or four years to open. Best after 2025.

Benoit is the 4th generation of Chevallier vignerons in Vosne-Romanée, and from 2018 has taken over production of the domaine. One of the rare and exciting new names in Burgundy that are working their estate owned vines, Benoit has hit the ground running in very short time. His wines are bright, energetic, and concentrated and show wonderful structure.

Organic viticulture is practiced in each of the plots, and from there the grapes are treated with utmost care. After sorting in the vineyard, all bunches are destemmed gently to preserve full berries, and vinification takes place in cement and wooden vats, with macerations lasting two to three weeks with gentle pump-overs and occasional punch-downs. The village wines are aged 12-14 months and the rest for about 18 months in new to three–year-old oak, depending on the cuvee and vintage.

Pale straw in the glass with a fine persistent bead. Aromas of crunchy green apple, lemon, grapefruit and juicy white peach undercut by hints of crushed stone, white flowers, sea spray, cut fennel and lighter tones of apple danish and almond meal. Now in its second vintage, the organic Ceretto 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is just phenomenal. The wine balances power, texture and bouquet with a pretty set of aromas that recall redcurrant, plump cherry, rusty nail and earthy iris root. Wines from Castiglione Falletto always have a very etched or focused quality, and I think you will discover that here. Drink 2025 - 2048.

The 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is all class. It emerges from a small sliver of land in Rocche di Castiglione proper, which is just below the Ceretto family's Bricco Rocche property. Elegant and nuanced, the 2019 is a gorgeous, aromatic Barolo that captures all the finesse of this site. The organic 2020 Barbaresco Bernadot offers a darker fruit performance with black cherry and blackcurrant. Like the other wines from this hot and sunny vintage, you taste the ripeness of the fruit and some background softness that comes with the territory (and the growing season). Beautiful florality and almost baked cherry sweets - cherry drops - on the nose, rose, Caramac bars, vanilla, white chocolate and lavender - an infusion of sweet, fruit and floral elements. Statuesque on the palate, ripe and massy, but so well textured - like crushed velvet with a powdery and also fleshy aspect to the tannins so they expand and fill the mouth and leave a lingering chalky, powdery salinity on the tongue and cheeks. Round, ample yet defined and detailed, so much going on but with no one element overpowering another building to a really impressive overall impression. Acidity is beautiful, and there are cola flecks that give the freshness and savoury touch. The power shines at the end where the tannins constrict and just grip the final flavour, so you know this is a big wine with long ageing potential. A deliciou addition to the Place de Bordeaux this year. Drink 2023 - 2033.

The Ceretto 2020 Barbaresco Asili (a certified organic wine) embraces purple fruit flavors with summer plum mostly and some blackcurrant. If there is a MGA which benefits from the volume of 2020 vintage it is Asili which is well known for its lean, pure elegance. Parma violet is wrapped up in watermelon fruit, leafy lightness and a floor of spices among smoky woodland, liquorice and roots. The lush fruit on the palate is sustained by crisp acidity and dense, silky tannins with a grippy finish due to its youth, soaked with a savoury blood orange aftertaste. A super-elegant Asili with volume. A great wine. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Disgorged during the second quarter of 2022 with a dosage of 3.75 grams per liter, the 2009 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Louis Salmon reveals aromas of pear, lemon oil, mandarin oil, white pepper, pastry and almonds. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and long, it has a crystalline yet vinous texture with a fresh, salty finish. It is a quintessential representation of Billecart's style, characterized by racy acids and a lively palate. It derives from Chardonnay grapes sourced from the villages of Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chouilly and Cramant and was aged exclusively in steel tanks. Drink 2023 - 2040.

The 2009 Champagne Blanc De Blancs Louis Salmon Brut comes from Mesnil, Cramant and Chouilly and was all fermented in stainless steel tank. Since 2009 was a warmer vintage, they did not use wood, as they were looking to preserve the freshness of the wine. A seductive wine that’s almost identical in appearance to the 2017 Blanc de Blancs, this 2009 jumps from the glass with a buoyant personality in its perfume of lemon custard, honeysuckle, fresh brioche, a hint of almond, and juicy pear. Full-bodied, its wonderfully rich texture coats the palate with citrus oils, and it has a finish that won’t quit. It balances its warmth and solar feel with a lovely embrace and retains a powerful yet balanced finish. Drink 2024-2040. 3.8 grams per liter dosage.

Pascal has the reputation for being a grape grower first and Champagne producer second; a philosophy shared with his son Ambroise who is now in charge of production. Ambroise and the team works an astonishing 70-plus micro-plots in the Cote des Blancs, mostly in Avize, but also in Cramant, Oiry, Oger, Avenay-Val-d’Or, Bergeres-les-Vertus and Mardeuil. All of these parcels are ploughed, and no chemical pesticides, fertilisers or herbicides are ever used. Production is very small, with no more than 6,000 cases produced in any given year.

Domaine Hubert Lignier is one of Burgundy’s finest addresses, producing wines that show profound depth, complexity, and structure with capacity for wonderful development in the cellar. Winemaking is quite traditional, with grapes being de-stemmed and fermented in open-top cement tanks with natural yeasts. Elevage is around 18 months for the Bourgogne and village wines, while the premier and grand cru wines remain in barrel for 20-24 months. All wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

    Other Reviews....
This too displays a vague whiff of volatile acidity but it's sufficiently subtle as to essentially be a non-issue on the earthy aromas of dark currant and plum. There is beguiling energy to the delineated and focused middle weight flavors that are not as concentrated but, somewhat surprisingly, they are finer thanks to the fine-grained tannins shaping the mildly austere and sneaky long finish. Note that my projected range assumes that the VA will remain at its presently very low level. Drink through 2031+.

Deeper and more structured than the Griotte, Lignier's 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with notes of blackcurrants, cherries, sweet soil tones, wilted rose petals and spices.

Discreet, even understated, aromas of exuberant and very pretty dark currant, ripe plum, spice and marked notes of herbal tea and floral wisps. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the borderline creamy but powerful and punchy medium weight plus flavors that are shaped by a firm but not really austere tannic spine supporting the wonderfully persistent finish. Once again, everything is in place such that this too should age gracefully. Drink through 2032+.

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has turned out especially well, wafting from the glass with aromas of peonies, sweet wild berries, orange rind, loamy soil and rose petals. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, with velvety tannins and an ample core of vibrant, perfumed fruit, it concludes with a long, seamless finish. This may well emerge as Lignier's finest Charmes of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 trio.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 21, 2022)

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, from Mazoyères, contains one-third whole bunch this year. That comes through on the nose: this will need some time to fully integrated those stems. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very silky in texture with a slightly powdery, candied finish. Charming, if just missing a little grip that would have warranted a higher score. Drink 2028-2048.

In the Mazoyères section. Generous deep, exuberant purple. Heady deep raspberry notes, flamboyant and enticing, peonies too. Very Charmes in its upfront energy but with a bit of Mazoyères minerality behind. The fruit stretches out very nicely to the back of the mouth. 13.6% alcohol.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside Burgundy

The fruit has a lovely black cherry sucrosity, with notes of rose petal and spice. The texture is silky, with lots of finesse, yet not lacking in density. Lignier remarks: 'It's less like the fleshy side of Gevrey and more like a Morey-St-Denis'. Lignier's 0.10ha parcel of Charmes lies in Mazoyères, near Les Combottes, and not far from the Morey border. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Tokaji Aszú is a noble sweet wine made by blending dried and noble rotten berries to a dry base wine. Taste and quality of the Aszú mainly depend on the number of hods (puttonyos) filled with dry berries (25 kilograms each), which are added to a cask (Gönc type, 136 liters) of dry base wine. Consequently, the proportion between aszú berries and dry base wine is about 1:1 for a 6 puttonyos Aszú. Aszú Eszencia is made with the same process, and is a classification above 6 puttonyos where the ratio of noble dry berries to wine is more akin to 7-10 puttonyos. This is not to be confused with Tokaji Essencia which is a fermentation of just the free run juice of the dried noble berries as they rest in the vat.

A gorgeous, gossamer-weight sweetie, creamy in texture yet beautifully balanced by vivid, mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of tangerine and mango explode on the palate, accented by rich hints of toffee and roasted hazelnut and fragrant notes of jasmine, lemon oil, black tea leaf and pickled ginger. Reveals a briny tang of iodine that cleans the lasting finish. Furmint, Hárslevelü, Zéta and Sárga Muskotály. Drink now through 2036.

Collectors note: Springbank's labels almost always arrive with minor wearing and markings, most often to the top of the front labels. This is unavoidable. If you are likely to be disappointed by minor label scuffing, we recommend you don't buy these whiskies. Slight bruising to gift box.

Like the Local Barleys, the annual Longrow limited editions have garnered a cult following. Ever since 1973, a run of twice-distilled peated malt has been produced at Springbank (Springbank itself is two and a half times distilled). Named after an earlier distillery in Campbeltown, Longrow's creation was prompted by a whisky shortage. According to Serge Valentin, it shares parallels with Tobermory’s Ledaig and Clynelish’s Brora. All were created because Islay whisky was in short supply after severe droughts in the late 1960s, and because of the temporary closure of Caol Ila. Expect a peaty punch. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Etoile is Chandon’s master blend of eight outstanding reserve wines. A buoyant mousse shows good hold over a pale straw, gold tinged base that has a steady stream of nibble bubbles flowing through it. Greeting the nostrils are aromatics of pear, baked bread and oily toast like scents followed by some roasted almond and yeast lees notes. Mouth filling pear, baked bread, citrus and yeast lees flavours are sculptured by vivid acidity with some roasted almond and ginger characters resonating through the back half. Slightly oily yet vibrant texture. Finishes very dry and tense with a long chalk tinged aftertaste.

The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. The fruit is sourced from various sub-appellations within the Napa Valley, each selected for their unique qualities that contribute to the overall blend, and it's expression of the region. About half of the grapes are from Oakville, known for deep, well-drained soils that create rich, smooth wines with gentle tannins. Other parts of the blend come from Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll, Yountville, and Rutherford. This wine aims to capture the essence of the Napa Valley.

Lovely cabernet notes of bell pepper, blackcurrants, blackberry leaves and cassis, together with some cocoa powder. I like the freshness. Medium body and creamy, powdery tannins. The base 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is certainly impressive, and since there are roughly 90,000 cases, it’s an incredible achievement. Classic darker currants, tobacco leaf, truffly earth, and spicy oak all define the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, terrific balance, and outstanding length. Based off 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, buy a case and enjoy bottles over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2022 - 2037.

    $37200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Paul Giraud's 'Noblesse' is a stunning composition marrying incredible depth of age with youthful vibrancy (a small percentage is aged in demijohns). It boasts a sublime perfume of figs, nectarines, dried apricots, ripe peaches as well as sandalwood, cigar box, manuka honey, sprinklings of pepper and liquorice root and resonates with a slow, intense flood of wood spices, nectarine, fig and dried apricot flavours combined with precision-tuned astringency. Six decades finds the wood (almost) too much; However Giraud's oldest bottlings are noted for their ethereal return from the back palate. You get it here in an encore that completely defies expectations: a haunting, sustained aftertaste hinting at orchard fruits, acacia, jasmine and rose water that unfolds over several minutes. Beautifully harmonised, this mature and totally evolved cognac will show its best after decanting or ample air contact. Highest recommendation. At the time of writing, just one bottle is available. 40% Alc./Vol.

One of a declining number of first rate producers who resisted the tide of multinational take overs in Cognac, Paul Giraud's Grande Champagne range are created from a magical 35 hectares in Bouteville and in St. Même-les-Carrières. Combining traditional methods with a modern take on production, he avoids chemicals or pesticides and colouring additives in the final blends. Hand harvests are the norm, ensuring careful treatment of the grapes to yield the finest eau-de-vie. Representing one of the high points in his collection to date, 'Noblesse' comes packaged to impress in a bi-fold, lacquered timber box housing a weighty, engraved decanter and stopper.

James Power was originally a coaching innkeeper of Thomas Street in Dublin,  when in 1791 he founded a small distillery by converting the hostelry into a distillery. By the turn of the century James was joined in the business by his son John. By 1809 the business had become a limited company under the name of John Power and Son with the father remaining in charge. In 1871 the distillery was rebuilt in classic Victorian style occupying almost 7 acres. It was one of Dublin's most impressive sights employing approximately 300 people. The last member of the Board with the Power name was Sir Thomas Talbot Power who died in 1936, although ownership remained in the family through his sisters. Powers remained a leading player in the industry until 1966 when they merged with the only two remaining distillers in the Irish republic, Cork Distillers Company and their long time rivals John Jameson & Son. Together these three distilleries formed the Irish Distillers Group. In 1989 the Pernod Ricard empire successfully bid against Gilbey's and Guinness-Cantrell-Cochran to become the new owners of the Irish Distillers Group which also includes Bushmills Distillery in the North of Ireland bought by the group in the 1970's. On Pernod Ricard's success the last four members of the old distilling families of Dublin and Cork resigned.

Powers was the first Whiskey company to sell their whiskey in miniature bottles called 'Baby Powers'. Today, Powers is one of the top selling Irish whiskeys sold in Ireland. Originally a pure pot still it is now produced at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork as a blend of triple distilled pot still and grain whiskeys. 43.2% Alc./Vol.

Founders Karlos Gudic, Sean Waddingham and Ben Evans renovated Clifton Hill's 130-year-old Royal Hotel in 2020, making room for a 300-litre still that currently makes two gins. 'Darling Gin' is their classic London Dry, distilled with locally sourced botanicals like rosemary, oranges, green tea, lemongrass and pepperberry. Aromatically, it's bright and citrus-driven hinting at lime zest and grapefruit, with coriander, white pepper, juniper and dried herbs in tow. Those notes lead into medium-intense flavours of Meyer lemon and honey yoghurt, ending in a linear, peel-fresh, piney finish with lingering spices. This elegant, drier-styled gin is also surprisingly powerful at 42%.

This Melbourne specialty involves a week-long maceration of cacao nibs, hazelnuts and wattleseeds in the distillery's Darling Gin, blended with cold-drip coffee from Abbotsford’s Coffee Supreme and the natural sweetness of dates. Not sweet enough to be a liqueur, and with none of the traditional botanical notes associated with gin, the focus is on rich espresso coffee and intensely fruity dark chocolate flavours. Beneath that - and where the gin does become apparent - is the finish, adding a citrus and pepper lift that works to relieve the mid-palate sweetness. It's a bit of a stretch to call it gin, but it is better than many coffee liqueurs. Serve neat on ice with a thin slice of orange or shaken martini style. 38% Alc./Vol.

Aged in oak barrels sourced from the last cooper in Brittany, this a singular product with real provenance. Serge at whiskyfun.com tasted an earlier 4-5 year old Dervenn release and was impressed, stating "...I’d call it export-quality French malt whisky." So with the extra age of this bottling you can be sure it'll be better again. 46% Alc./Vol.

Often seen as the most elegant of the First Growth wines, Chateau Lafite Rothschild has long been considered one of the greatest wines from not only Bordeaux, but from anywhere in the world. Prices too reflect its status as the most collectable wine in Bordeaux, spurred on since 2008 when it ruled the Chinese fine wine market.

While the vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, each year the proportions vary according to the vintage, normally with Cabernet Sauvignon accounting for 80-90% of the blend.

    Ex-Chateau release 2023.

The 2003 Lafite Rothschild comes as close to perfection as any of the great Lafites made over the past three decades (1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010). This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estate’s great classics, the 1959. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedarwood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa and cassis. Fat, rich, opulent and full-bodied with low acidity and stunning seductiveness and complexity, this noble wine possesses a bountiful, generous, heady style. It is just coming into its plateau of maturity where it should hold for 20-25 years. This is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage – make no mistake about that. Drink 2014 - 2039.

The 2003 Lafite-Rothschild famously shrugged off the merciless heat of that infamous summer when the temperature at the estate nudge 42° Celsius. It has a lovely bouquet of black plum, pressed iris, a touch of glycerin and (for Lafite) exotic scents of blood orange. The palate is powerful and intense as you would expect. There is great depth and volume with glossy black fruit laced with orange zest, smoke and melted tar. You can almost feel the summer in this Lafite-Rothschild but unlike many of its peers, it has requisite acidity to maintain freshness and avoid cloyingness on the finish. Whilst not my pick of modern-day Lafites, I have to doff my cap because it was and still is, one of the finest Left Banks of the vintage. Tasted at the Lafite-Rothschild 150th anniversary dinner at the estate. Drink 2020-2050.

Spicy and rich, with a tobacco and berry character on the nose and palate I love the nose. Full bodied, with soft velvety tannins that give you so much. This goes on and on. Sexy and exciting right now, but leave this for five or six years.

It has been several years since I lasted this wine, and the years have been kind to the wine. Now, it is supple, ostentatious, showy and also, rich with layers of ripe, red berries, cedar, herbs, tobacco leaf, and spice. The wine is full, deep and concentrated with an opulent finish that is drinking just great today.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild holds a unique place in the history of Bordeaux, being the only property to have its ranking changed since the introduction of the 1855 Classification. Originally listed as a Second Growth, through the tireless efforts of Baron Philippe Rothschild to make a wine he truly believed could match the best in the world, the property was upgraded to First Growth in June 1973.

Known as the most flamboyant of the First Growth wines, Mouton Rothschild shows the rich and exotic side of Pauillac. Plantings on the 75 hectare property are a mix of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Mouton Rothschild is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal notes of baked black cherries, crème de cassis, blackberry compote and bouquet garni with suggestions of sweaty leather, pencil lead, cedar chest and black truffles plus a hint of crushed rocks. Full-bodied, the palate is solidly constructed of super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and lively acidity, framing the densely packed black fruit, finishing on a persistent mineral note. Drink 2023 - 2060.

A wine of noble bearing and exceptional beauty, the 2010 Mouton Rothschild is a flat-out stunner. The aromatics alone are beguiling. On the palate, the wine is every bit as thrilling, with myriad layers of flavor that continue to open up in the glass. Graphite, gravel, smoke, plum, black cherry and savory herbs are all strikingly delineated throughout. Vivid and crystalline, the 2010 is a jewel of a wine, but it is impossibly young now. Readers who can be patient will be treated to a fabulous wine. Today, the 2010 reminds me of a more civilized version of the 1986. The 2010 is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon (the highest amount of Cabernet ever here). Dollops of Merlot round out the blend. Harvest took place between September 29 and October 13. Drink 2025-2060.

Clearly a perfect wine that shows incredible depth of fruit with currants, dark chocolate, minerals and licorice. Full-bodied, tight and wound up with ripe tannins that let go and seduce you. Makes me want to drink it now. But this is a wine for the long term. Extraordinary. 94% cabernet sauvignon. Better in 2020.

You can put the 2010 Château Mouton Rothschild up with the crème de la crème of this great vintage, and it shows the more masculine, structured style of the year while bringing that classic Mouton opulence and sexiness. Blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, graphite, and spring flower notes all shine here, and this beauty is full-bodied, has a flawlessly layered, balanced mouthfeel, and a blockbuster finish. This is classic Mouton magic, and it’s one of the most textured, seamless wines out there. Drink 2025-2050.

Smoked grilled tar on the nose, it feels both very 2010 and supremely Mouton - accomplished and confident. A more glamorous, enticing edge than the other Pauillac Firsts at this 10 year window. There are plentiful tannins but they are lined with air, and the overall feel is of plush, plumped fruits, like being rolled-up in luxurious sheets. It is very different in character to the other two Pauillac Firsts, but no less enjoyable. It feels higher in alcohol, more Cos than Lafite in terms of personality, in the way that Pichon Baron is more Latour than Comtesse, but it is nuanced and clever and surprising. Drink 2025 - 2050,

Incredible in every sense of the word, this has everything you could want in a Pauillac and from Mouton Rothschild. Just as good, but different in style from the opulence found in the 2009, here you find incredible levels of intensity, density, richness, vibrancy and lift. The wall of fruit is perfectly ripe, expressing its purity along with crushed rocks, flowers, spice box, lead pencil, currants, cassis, blackberries, and Cuban cigars. The racy finish is seamless and crosses the 60-second mark with ease. This is not a wine for today. This is for the future. Your children can enjoy it at maturity. Drink from 2030-2080.

Chateau Margaux has an impressive history of producing the best wines of Bordeaux, with winemaking on the property dating back to the 12th century. In the 1700’s Thomas Jefferson included Margaux in his list of the greatest four wines of Bordeaux, and this was later vindicated when Chateau Margaux was awarded First Growth status in the 1855 Classification.

Traditional in style, Chateau Margaux is a wine of finesse and purity, but also one with richness and aromatic complexity, with an enviable history of cellaring potential. Vineyards are planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, while the final blend normally uses around 85% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Château Margaux features notions of minted blackcurrants, new leather and Black Forest cake with nuances of sautéed herbs, tar, underbrush and wild fungi plus a waft of cedar. Full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the taut, muscular fruit, finishing long and earthy. Drink 2023 - 2060.

The 2010 Château Margaux continues to deliver the goods, but like the 2005, it is a wine that demands patience. Backward on the nose, this vintage offers black fruit, crushed violet petals and mint, graphite and cedar joining the chorus line. This bouquet is only in its first chapter. The palate is one of the most structured in recent years, gripping the mouth like a Latour, the tannins perhaps having firmed up a bit in the last couple of years. But this has a crucial line of acidity that counterbalances the payload of fruit concentration with a bravura finish that is like a brass section going full pelt. Wonderful. Tasted at the château. Drink 2030-2075.

This was phenomenal from barrel and remains so. The aromas are spellbinding. It smells like a bouquet of pink roses and then goes to currants, berries and citrus. Full body, with wonderfully refined tannins. It starts discretely and then grows to different levels and dimensions like a slow but big high tide. The texture is so beautiful. Try it in 2020 or beyond.

An undeniable star in Margaux – and from a vintage described as a “dream year” by Philippe Bascaules – the 2010 Château Margaux is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Carménère, and Petit Verdot, raised in new barrels. This deep purple-hued beauty offers up a sensational perfume of smoky tobacco, red and black fruits, and graphite. Full-bodied and powerful, it boasts ripe, polished tannins and incredible depth on the palate. While it's not yet in its prime drinking window, it has everything you could ask for and will have an incredible evolution over the coming 50+ years. Drink 2030-2080.

As we head out of Pauillac, you feel the register change. It takes a heartbeat to adjust, but then you start to see the beauty of a different style of 2010, a little more elegant, a little more sculpted, with concentration that sits deep in the body of the wine but builds more slowly through the palate. This shows the beauty of the appellation of Margaux in the way that you always want and hope the First Growths will - a signpost towards the rest, showing why they should be celebrated. Here are violet aromatics, soft black truffle flavours and silky, elongated tannins. Extremely good quality; fairly savoury berry fruits. As with all of these, there's a long long life ahead of it, and best to be put away for another five years at least. Drink 2025 - 2050.

The perfume teases you with its depth and intensity of what’s to come with its aromas of violets, smoky oak, licorice, earth, vanilla and mélange of dark berries. From the first sip, the wine coats your palate and taste buds with pure, fresh, rich, thick, polished blackberries, silky tannins and a finish that builds and expands for close to 60 seconds! The wine continued to build and expand in the glass for the two hours we spent with the wine over lunch.

The greatest wine produced at this estate since the formidable duo of 1989 and 1990 is the 1998 Pétrus, a magical bottle that is a lot more complex and expressive today than was the case only a handful of years ago. Bursting with aromas of dark berries, pencil shavings, violets, licorice and black truffle, it's full-bodied, rich and seamless, with incredible depth at the core, beautifully refined tannins and a long, resonant finish. Even though this is probably the richest, most textural wine of the vintage, the 1998 isn't quite as broad and concentrated as the 1989, but if anything, it's even more precise and delineated. Drink 2020 - 2060.

The 1998 Petrus never fails to deliver. This is a fabulous example that confirms it is a true tour de force. It has a compelling bouquet with mineral-rich black and red fruit with unerring purity. In this bottle, I notice a hint of hickory not observed previously. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins, perfect acidity and a sense of tension that counterbalances the sheer power and ambition of this, the best Bordeaux of the vintage bar none. I was not quite moved to give this a perfect three-figure score, but it flirts with perfection. Tasted at the Petrus dinner at Hide restaurant in London and at Epure restaurant in Hong Kong. Drink 2020-2060.

The 1998 Petrus goes from strength to strength as it ages. It's a perfect wine and the wine of the vintage with Le Pin and Cheval Blanc. I was lucky enough to drink some over the weekend when a friend brought a bottle to dinner. It was stunning. It's so deep and characterful yet refined and subtle. It showed aromas of wet earth, mushrooms and dark fruits. Dry black olives came out as well. Full body, firm tannins and bright acidity. Very fresh and just opening up now. Walnut and chocolate character. So youthful. Decant two or three hours before serving.

Richly-scented like you wouldn't believe, earthy truffle, undergrowth, black olive and rosemary fill the glass as your nose hovers over it, and don't let up right through the palate, providing waves of first aroma then flavour. At 22 years old this provides apt evidence of why Petrus 1998 is a legend of 20th century wine. The vintage plays to all of Petrus' strengths; a classic Merlot year that here combines velvety soft-edged tannins that caress and cushion the abundant black cherry, blackberry and bilberry fruit. Traces of campfire, mocha and liquorice are shot through every mouthful, and this is just so good. Jean-Claude Berrouet was at the helm at this point, expertly conducting the many strands of the wine. Harvest September 21, 22 and 23. A small yield meant just 2,400 cases compared to the usual 4,000. 50% new oak. Drink 2020 - 2032.

It is out of my price range, but if you have the coin or friends with the bank, if you are seeking a Petrus with some age that is really hitting all the right notes, 1998 is the wine to buy. The wine is loaded from start to finish with chocolate-coated cherries, truffles, flowers, plums, smoke, touches of blue fruits, and a mild touch of menthol. Full-bodied, rich, opulent, silky, and fresh, the wine is polished, refined, intense, and palate-coating with purity and length. Drink from 2023-2050.

McHenry 10 Year Old Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $174. 99
    Bottle
    $2099.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

For Australian whisky, this is well into middle age. Drawn from American oak barrels that have been sitting in the distillery sheds since McHenry started over twelve years ago, we're told the best flavours are found when it’s left to breathe for a minute or two before your first sip. 46% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: The nose of this whisky presents an inviting bouquet reminiscent of a freshly baked vanilla cake, emerging with a delicate and alluring sweetness. As you delve deeper, the notes of caramel reveal themselves, entwined with the essence of warm, buttery toffee. This interplay between the vanilla and caramel is heightened by a nuanced undercurrent of light spice, akin to a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg, lending an extra layer of complexity to the aroma. The overall effect is akin to wandering into a kitchen as a cake rich with vanilla essence and caramelization emerges from the oven, enticing and comforting. Palate: Upon the first sip, the whisky glides onto the palate with an exquisite silkiness that imparts a velvety sensation, reminiscent of satin sheets. The initial touch reveals a harmonious blend of flavors where the vanilla and caramel from the nose seamlessly transition onto the palate. The taste unfolds into a symphony of traditional oak flavors, evoking the essence of aged wood, interwoven with hints of toasted almond and a faint whisper of dark chocolate. These oak characteristics tell a story of the whisky’s journey through time, as it draws forth the essence of the barrel it matured in. The aging process becomes palpable as the flavors deepen and develop, allowing you to truly taste the passage of years. Finish: The finish is a lingering embrace that envelops your tongue in a gentle warmth, akin to the embrace of a cozy blanket on a chilly evening. The initial burst of flavors slowly fades, leaving behind a soothing resonance that carries with it the echoes of the whisky’s journey. It’s a comforting and reflective moment, akin to the warmth of a hearthfire. As the whisky bids adieu, it leaves a memory of its intricate layers, evoking a sense of nostalgia and contentment, inviting you to relive the experience once more.
