Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Pepper infused dark plum and liquorice aromas rise from the glass followed by some scorched earth, dried meat and dried herb notes. Rich dark plum and liquorice fruits carry medium body weight and a fleshy yet touch meaty feel. Notions of vanillin cedar, scorched earth and peppered meats lie underneath. Good freshness with a polished yet sturdy tannin structure. Concludes refined and peppery.

Shiraz without a dash of viognier, which might explain why it oscillates between ripe dark fruit and savoury tones, including baking spices and cedary oak ... a little smoky and meaty, too. The palate is shapely with tannins and lots of them, yet finishes long and satisfying. Pat Carmody says what viognier does to shiraz is something else, but personally shiraz on its own is just as fabulous. Drink by 2033.

The 2023 Grand Vin Blanc Sec Vieilles Vignes is superb. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers, sage, mint and dried flowers all run through this super-expressive, savory dry white. There's real phenolic intensity to the Vieilles Vignes—a rich, deep white for the dinner table. Pretty floral top notes and a kick of tropical fruit brighten the finish. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2023 La Croix St Georges is a terrific effort from this estate that neighbors Le Pin and shares a similar gravelly terroir. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of mulberries, plums and raspberries mingled with hints of licorice and kirsch, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit and a seamless, complete profile.

It's a satisfying, thoroughly enjoyable, if not outstanding, Pomerol that will drink well with just short-term cellaring.

The medium-bodied palate is even better with its crisp, soft, lush, silky, vibrant, polished, fresh character. The fruits are sweet, ripe, and juicy. There is purity matched with elegance. The finish is long, and lingering with its chocolate-coated black, and red fruits, with just a hint of smoke, and espresso to add another accent. The wine is produced from 100% Merlot. 14.61 ABV, 3.67 pH. This is clearly the start of another level for La Croix St. Georges. When bottled, it is possible the score could rise even further. Drink from 2028-2045.

Fermented and aged in French oak casks for 10 months. Brilliant very pale straw colour with a distinctive greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Aromas of ripe pear and nectarine are followed by hints of dried honey, biscuity oak, citrusy nougat and spice. Mid weighted and carrying a nicely fleshed feel, pear and nectarine fruits are featured over honeysuckle, biscuity nougat and spicy crème brulee characters. Gently creamed medium to long conclusion.

The 2021 vintage benefited from soaking winter rains that provided ample soil moisture, leading to healthy crops. A mild summer allowed for slow ripening and enhanced flavor development. The wine was aged for 14 months in 500 to 600-liter French oak barrels (15% new), followed by an additional 14 months in the bottle. Crafted from close-planted, low-yielding vines at Shaw & Smith’s Balhannah Vineyard, this wine promises to reward careful cellaring for up to 20 years.

A scintillating nose of mace, clove, blue-fruit persuasions, lilac, pepper-dried salumi, fennel seed and kelp, akin to nori of the sort found at Tokyo's arsenal of exceptional sushi counters. On the slightly richer side of mid-weighted. Yet, the slippery skein of tannin is so immaculately placed that there is neither heat nor an ounce of sloppy, sweet fruit. Everything is compressed into a polished bone of tension and savory refinement. The acidity is saline and lathered with tapenade. More of a syrah from an external perspective. An irrefutably brilliant one. I wish I had more to cellar, given the wine's noble stature. A ringer for refined Cornas, if not an oxymoron. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. Screw cap.

Shiraz from a north-facing site at 380m at Balhannah in the Adelaide Hills.
The pitch here is as perfect as you’ll find. It’s glossy and smooth but there’s sinew and grain too; the fruit is sweet but the herbs are ardent. Twiggy spice, mescal, black pepper and peanut shells weave through blueberry and ripe plum. Tannin is grapey, fine-grained, smoky and expansive. It’s exemplary. Drink 2025 - 2035+

Robert Mondavi Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon combines Californian winemaking with Southern Bourbon Whiskey maturation, creating a bold and unique wine.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass are intense aromas of cassis, liquorice and black cherry liqueur which are trailed by prominent vanillin oak, coconut and spice notes. Rich and sweetly fruited, luscious cassis liqueur and liquorice flavours are overwhelmed by a strong toasty vanillin oak component on the back half with some caramel, coconut and cinnamon spice characters also evident. Very smooth tannins with a sweet vanillin oak laden finish.

Named after another lost distillery of Campbeltown (which once operated right next door to Springbank and whose warehouse now houses their bottling hall). Longrow was first produced in 1973 to provide a peaty, oily and robust component to a blend being launched at the time. More heavily peated than Springbank and double distilled, it has been a staple in the production calendar since the 1990s. This is the annual 2023 edition of the oldest whisky in the Longrow core range, matured in a combination of 60% Sherry casks, 30% bourbon casks and 10% Chardonnay casks.
Notes from the producers... Nose: Delicate smoke, salt, caramel, vanilla. Sweet, light cream, dried fruits. Taste: Maritime, traces of ash and smoke. Dried fruits, plums, raisins, dark chocolate. Citrus fruits in the background. Finish: Long with peat, seaweed and spices.

The 2023 L'Eglise Clinet unwinds in the glass with brooding aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with baking chocolate, pipe tobacco and toasty new oak. Full-bodied, layered and muscular, with a sweet core of fruit framed by rich, powdery, generously extracted tannin, it's broad-shouldered and powerful, concluding with a long, expansive finish. It's a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that checks in at 14.6% alcohol.

The 2023 L'Eglise-Clinet was picked between September 10 and 14 and matured in 82% new oak. It has a stunning bouquet with enthralling delineation and focus, very intense with blackberries, raspberry, crushed stone, Earl Grey and a touch of blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and a dash of cracked black pepper. It's very harmonious and fans out brilliantly on the finish. It is surely going to vie with the stupendous 2022, and this ranks as one of the best wines of the vintage. Tasted on two visits at the beginning and end of my Bordeaux tastings. Drink 2032-2060.

The purity and precision tof this young Eglise Clinet is exceptional, with finesse, intensity and fine tannins that last for minutes on the palate. It grows slowly and then builds and continues. The energy is terrific. Finishes long and confident. All about structure with finesse. The tannins really are refined and tightly woven. 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc.

The Grand Vin 2023 Château L'Eglise Clinet checks in as 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that's resting in 82% new barrels. It brings another level of density as well as purity, with fabulous notes of cassis, ripe black cherries, chocolate, smoked tobacco, iron, and spice, as well as a kiss of background graphite. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet very much in the vibrant, fresh, classic style of the vintage, it has ripe tannins and a gorgeous finish. It shines on all accounts, offering beautiful purity and complexity and plenty of richness, and it should have a broad, lengthy drink window.

Crafted from deep rooted vines in both clay with clayey gravel, this estate succeeds like no other in expressing power from this appellation but without any hard or drying tannins, which one can encounter in 2023 from other estates. Cool and confident menthol, bright tangy red berry and blueberry fruit aromas introduce an almost Pauillac like palate whose tannic grip is happily balanced by blood red orange like freshness. Aging in 82% new oak, this wine was made from grapes picked before the September rains: the tannins show no rawness, but rather pristine ripeness. I love the linear focus enveloped with subtle succulence, ending with a long finish. Give it the full opportunity to improve in your cellar, not before 2033, when it will reward your patience fully. Drink 2033 - 2060.

Panos Kakaviatos - Decanter
The wine quickly focuses you on its floral characteristics paired with black raspberries, plums, black, with white cherries, dark chocolate, and just an edge of coffee beans. The palate however, is where the excitement takes place. The wine is opulent, rich, aromatic, concentrated, and long. The mark of freshness is there, but, you also experience the wine's elegance, and silky tannins, as well as its length, and width on the mid-palate, and finish. Interestingly, here, it was the moderate amount of sun hours that helped make the vintage as it shielded the grapes from the late summer heat wave. From a blend of 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc, 14.60% ABV. The harvest took place September 10-September 14. It is great to see continuing strong wines from the Durantou family. Drink from 2029-2060.

Medium to full-bodied, dense and rich with a concentrated core of fruit, it’s enrobing and charming with structuring tannins and a long, licorice and smoke-inflected finish. It will offer a broad drinking window. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2023 Montlandrie sees a change in composition, as a plot of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon that Noëmie Durantou planted in 2021 enters the blend for the first time. She found the first-pressed wine for the Cabernet Sauvignon impressive, so she also added that to the blend. The result is 55% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked between September 18 and 30 and matured in 50% new oak. This new makeup certainly gives it a different aromatic profile than previous vintages: black cherries, cedar and pencil shavings, very focused, more Left-Bank-meets-Right-Bank in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It’s beautifully structured and judiciously spiced with gentle grip on the finish. Together with Les Cruzelles, these wines represent outstanding value for money. This will certainly age well in bottle. Drink 2027-2047.

The 2023 Château Montlandrie is a complex blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, and it was brought up in 50% new French oak. A terrific sense of minerality as well as impressive darker cherry and currant fruits, leafy herbs, and spice all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a beautifully layered texture and ripe tannins.

The first press of the Cabernet Sauvignon was so impressive that the estate used it for the first time, about 2%, and the impression left is of a wine with fine structure but also savoury, as the blend remains dominated by Merlot. In 1968, Chairman George S Grant (4th generation) selected and bottled a cask at natural strength for family and friends as a Christmas gift. The liquid was 105 British proof which is equivalent to 60% alcohol by volume. The high strength whisky was so popular that George continued to bottle Glenfarclas at 105 proof making it one of the first official releases of cask strength Scotch whisky in the world. So the Glenfarclas 105 was born! In 2023, the new management sought to up the ante with a proper age statement at this potent ABV with a very limited bottling of 16-year-old curated by Distillery Manager, Callum Fraser and Managing Director, Douglas Belford. Embodying the full bodied Glenfarclas style, it's reported that this is limited to around 5000 bottles globally.
Notes from the producers... Colour: Rich copper. Nose: Instant notes of soft butterscotch, vanilla essence, and exquisite bold spices. Taste: Deeply complex flavours with stewed berry fruits, melted butter toffee combined with freshly baked almond biscuits. A certified organic Bordeaux blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 60% Semillon fermented in old Sauternes oak barrels and aged for 6 months on lees to give the wine more volume and textural appeal. The fruit is primarily sourced from a vineyard that was planted to Sauvignon Blanc by accident around 40 years ago. (For their Sauternes, Guiraud were after a Semillon-heavy cuvee - too much Sauvignon Blanc was not considered the right balance for a sweet wine). Instead of selling off the Sauvignon or re-planting, Guiraud decided to create a special dry white and the “G” was born.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle greenish tinge around the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of green apple and lime have a subtle herbaceous gooseberry overlay with hints of grassy asparagus characters and light pencil shaving notes also evident. Intensely flavoured and beautifully shaped, the palate features pear, lime and herbaceous gooseberry flavours over a back drop of delicate pencil shavings, grassy asparagus characters and spice. Great textural volume and crisp acidity rounding out to a long, dry and highly savoury conclusion.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

After leaving his family domaine in 2005, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey has established himself as one of the rising stars of Burgundy. Pierre-Yves has built a strong reputation for crafting exquisite white Burgundy that display energy and vitality. The white wines are whole bunch pressed, fermented with natural yeasts, aged on lees for up to 18 months in mostly in 350 litre barrels with no lees stirring and no filtration. The corks used come from one tiny supplier and are extra long and extra wide (55mm x 25mm) for the village, 1er cru and Grand cru wines and are untreated with no paraffin and the bottles are then sealed with soft wax to ensure no problems with premature oxidation. The resulting wines are built to age classically up to 10 years or more.

An exuberantly fresh and floral-suffused nose also displays notes of green apple and citrus confit. There is excellent richness and power to the focused middleweight flavors that evidence a taut muscularity on the impressively persistent finale. Excellent development potential here. Drink through 2033+.

The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is terrific, exhibiting aromas of pear, crisp green apple, orange zest and freshly baked bread. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's taut and layered, with terrific concentration and a long, saline finish. Sadly, less than one barrel was produced.

The palate is well balanced with a powerful opening, more tropical than anticipated with wild peach, persimmon and hints of grapefruit, spicy with stem ginger on the finish. Wonderful. Still, however, pleasantly ripe pear and quince aromas with a subtle hint of white flowers develops on the palate. The texture is firm and broad, with structure in all the right places. The grapes come from the 0.08-hectare plot at the centre of Bâtard; they are lightly crushed prior to fermentation in large casks with a modest proportion of new wood for the appellation. Delivering remarkable value this is quite possibly the best vintage of Bouvet Saphir yet.
A blend of Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay that’s aged for a minimum of 18 months on lees. An exuberant mousse holds well over a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges and a generous stream of delicate bubbles flowing through it. Expressive pear, baked apple and yeast lees aromas are trailed by citrus, delicate toast and subtle chalk notes. Loaded with flavour the mouth watering palate features ripe pear and apple fruits over a yeast lees, citrus and gently toasted brioche backdrop. Soft airy feel with crisp, stimulating acidity leading into a long scrumptious finish.

Bruichladdich are known for the producing the most heavily peated Scotch you can find, but its core whisky, the Classic Laddie, is actually unpeated. Now, more than two decades after it reopened, the distillery is releasing its first 18 year-old as part of a high-end "Redefined" lineup with a classic bourbon matured malt. 50% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... A whiff of wood smoke or char on the nose, creating an overlay to more classic notes of stone fruit, mango, red berries, apples, and vanilla. Still lots of fruited liveliness beneath the initial smoke, which develops more toward cigar box and cigar ash. The palate offers honeyed sweetness, crème brûlée, coconut cream, tropical fruits, red berries, and pepper spice. This is the new one with the funny box and the hefty price (190€). Well, at least it's a conversation starter, which is already something. They mention terroir on the label, but I'm not sure all the barley comes from Islay; if it doesn't, that's a very liberal use of the term 'terroir' that they're employing. Anyway, marketers around the world are trying to invent new meanings for this word right now. In summary, they all claim that "terroir is what we do at home." Yes, of course... Colour: gold. Nose: it's quite deep but not ultra-expressive, a bit earthy and chalky, malty, more on a bread dough side, with hints of carbon powder, then more honey. It undoubtedly needs water. With water: beeswax comes out, fruit wines (the eternal peaches and melons), fresh raisin rolls... Mouth (neat): now this is very good, it starts with ripe fruits around peaches and oranges, with an immediate liquorice side. Also that fruit salad side that we so love in Bruichladdich. There's also a bit of wine but nothing too serious. With water: it's well-structured, fruity, with some citrus pastries. It seems younger than it is. Finish: medium length. Melons, guavas, sweet pepper, and always a few drops of indeterminate wine and a bit of wood/tea. Comments: it's not a very maritime Laddie, and the eighteen years don't really feel, but the quality is undoubtedly there. This example from Teaninich was distilled in 2007 and is reportedly expressive of the soft fruity style that the distillery is known for, augmented by maturation in a refill sherry butt - think orchard fruits and citrus in a creamy vanilla setting. The Mader domaine, a small family-owned winery, is located in the picturesque village of Hunawihr, near Ribeauvillé. They own over 10 hectares of vineyards, including prized Grand Cru sites in Rosacker and Schlossberg. Jérôme Mader took over in 2005 and converted the vineyards to organic viticulture, gaining certification in 2007.
The 2022 vintage at Rosacker, from vines aged 43 to 68 years near the top of the vineyard, was warm but delivered surprising freshness. With a low yield of just 35 hl/ha, the wine exhibits great intensity, finesse, and structure, featuring rich, intense citrus fruit, mineral notes, and outstanding length.

Other reviews... If they must. This one baby spent its last 5 years in wood in 'Bordeaux wine casks', so it's double maturation instead of finish, although they would write both on the label. I suppose it was red Bordeaux but they wouldn't tell. Many people believe Bx is red, but you can have them in all colours. Sauternes is Bordeaux too. Colour: gold. Nose: all right, it is not about red berries, bell pepper and stuff. We're leaning towards fresh cakes, brioche, cut grass, and also a bit of cooked ham. These ham notes are quite unusual, especially to this extent. Mouth: yes, not bad at all! A bit of strawberry jam this time, as well as green pepper, bay leaves, small salty and smoky touches, bitter oranges, and then a slightly unexpected fino-like side. In short, we're not on raspberry and blackcurrant liqueur, thankfully. Finish: quite long, indeed pleasant and ultimately rather coastal. But Bordeaux is located by the ocean. For the fourth evolution of the Master Blender's Reserve, Oliver Chilton has looked to create a blend that is closer to the original Navy rum with a heavier mouth feel and rich notes of wood smoke, espresso and cacao. As always, he has put his own spin on the assemblage, this year including a rum from Grenada, distilled in 1993, to add depth and accentuate a rich orange oil notes from the Perpetual Reserve. As always, the blend begins with rum drawn from the previous year's Master Blender’s Reserve - this works in a similar way to a Solera, whereby one-third of a blend is held back for another year and blended again. In 2023, casks were selected from Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana and Grenada (see below for a comprehensive breakdown). Notably, a higher proportion from Guyana component was included, the thick liquorice and muscovado in this rum helps recreate the unique flavour profiles they exhibited over half a century ago.   These five blends were then brought together and married with the Perpetual Reserve, as well as some of the original Navy Rum from 1970, keeping the liquid history alive. Chilton comments, "With a larger focus on older rums from Guyana and the addition of 30-year-old rum from Grenada, a real sense of maturity and status has developed. It is such a privilege to be able to keep back stock from each blend to mature on and use as the heart of the next iteration of Master Blender’s Reserve, reimagining a blending technique used for so many decades by the rum blenders of the Navy.” 54.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Are all NAS necessarily underwhiskies? That's up for debate... In any case, if the age isn't known here, we know it's ¼ toasted bourbon (rejuvenated barrels, I suppose) and ¾ American oak (just regular hogsheads, I suppose). Colour: pale white wine. Nose: honestly, it's very fine, with notes of nail polish, lime, ginger tonic, sourdough, wheat beer, plaster, porridge, and some rather elegant and discreet peat With water: very subtle hints of anise and hops. Mouth (neat): sweet yet tart, very citrusy, but with a slightly fatty woodiness. I think it's close to the official CI Cask Strength, but it's been a while since I've tasted the latter. Do they still make it? With water: nice, but there's always a somewhat thick and fatty aspect to the wood. Finish: long, oily in the mouth. In theory, it's the fresh wood that should do that. ...This new Cask Strength Port Askaig, subtly labelled “Gateway to Islay” also moves from a core release to an annual (or at least periodical) limited, small batch release. Understandable in the face of challenges in late 2023... A big, strong, powerful, young Caol Ila, just how I like it. It doesn’t say on the label of course, but in this writer's opinion, we can be pretty certain it is from that distillery. It’s the old cliché of beachside barbecues, maritime air and thick, ashen smoke that we often find with Islay malts, but this is a particularly good example. As of 2024, Host (pronounced “hurst”), is the latest addition to Stauning's portfolio. The blend of rye and single malt is named ‘harvest’ in honour of the Danish landscape and the country’s grains which are 100% floor malted and kiln dried at the distillery. Alex Munch, one of Stauning’s founders, comments: “Each harvest, farmers give over a portion of their fields to wildflowers, adding a riot of colour to the stretches of grains that carpet the land. We created HØST to celebrate the closeness of nature and nurture, the deliberate rye and barley hand-in-hand with the sudden colour of wildflowers, just as our modern, sustainable distillery sits alongside acres of green fields.”
Matured on-site in heavily charred new American oak and first-fill Port barriques, this well-balanced dram is perfect for beginners: Easy on entry and easy to the last with a blended malt kind of feel and a fruit bread character throughout. Not outstanding but no quibbles either. Just extremely drinkable whisky. Tasted from a 15ml sample. 40.5% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... It says ‘Smooth & Delicate’—well, what’s that about then? Seems to be a 50/50 split of malted barley and rye, aged in a mix of American virgin oak, ex-Bourbon, and ex-Port casks. We reckon, with a bit of luck, this could work. Colour: gold. Nose: very light, but not unpleasant, rather like an herbal tea. Might even call it a breakfast whisky. Fresh bread, gentle fennel, caraway seeds, and a touch of spice… Mouth: it’s good, not even too weak. There’s bread and spices aplenty, but it tends to nod off after thirty seconds or so, becoming a bit drying. Finish: fairly short, though nicely bread-forward. Comments: It’s from a Diageo-backed distillery, so they clearly know what they’re up to, and it’s really not bad at all. Just a pity about the ABV—perhaps a typo crept in somewhere during production? I love the gentle style, it’s smooth with tannins that give body but no weight. More vertical than wide, it’s layered and delicate. Finessed as you expect from Clos Fourtet. Lithe, supple, mouthwatering, a certain density is there and the length is great. Cool but chalky too. There’s power here in the fleshiness but it’s juicy with a touch of oak and enjoyable bitterness on the finish. Ageing 40% new oak, 60% one year used barrels. 3.5pH. 46hl/ha yield. Drink 2030 - 2046.

There is length, purity, and refinement, with a lingering sensation of minerality that adds to the sweetness of the berries. This is the second vintage where the parcels of Grandes Murailles were integrated into Clos Fourtet. The wine blends 87% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% ABV, 3.54 pH. These clones were first identified in 1964 by Harry Tulluch of the South Australian Department of Agriculture and include SA1654 (The most widely planted Shiraz clone in Australia) which produces wines of intense black purple colour with a distinct black pepper character; SA2626, a firmer tannin structure with flavours of stewed fruit and sour cherries. SA1127 has spectacular dense purple black colour and the aroma is of violets and cherry palate flavours. SA712 is dominated by chocolate and plum flavour whilst BVRC30 offers an earthy, farmyard character to Shiraz.

There's been a slow but steady outturn of whiskies matured in the quasi mythical mizunara oak, and not only from Japan. Now Glenmorangie add another to the list. 'A Tale of Tokyo' could just as well be called ‘A Tale of Mizunara’, given the long winded journey that transpired when 'Morangie's Head of Whisky Creation, Bill Lumsden decided to pursue it. He sums up mizunara as, “Quite weird, difficult to obtain and a challenge to work with" while conceding, “it has this kind of cult status, which is quite intriguing because if you look at in the cold light of day you would never use it for making oak barrels.”
It would seem that the project was lucky to get off the ground. Mizunara oak trees grow particularly slowly. It takes 200 years for them to be suitable for crafting into casks (American oak takes around half that time). The wood itself imparts strange flavours and is notoriously porous (not ideal for holding whisky!) and, on top of that, the oak is generally difficult to procure. After many years searching, Lumsden finally found a cooperage that would cooperate. “The owner knew Glenmorangie and he knew about the experimental things we’d done and so he agreed to craft some barrels for me,” says Lumsden. Together with Master Blender & Head of Whisky Creation, Gillian Macdonald, they decided to heavily toast the mizunara. Filled with Glenmorangie spirit, the two barrels yielded "weird flavours" including furniture polish notes. The experiment was a failure. However, Lumsden adds “We played around in the lab for a year or so and eventually ended up with the recipe we are most happy with. The biggest flavor contributor is the mizunara, but the flavor profile is classic Glenmorangie, with first-fill American oak bourbon barrels to lend creaminess and softness and take the edge off the mizunara and a bit of sweetness from Glenmorangie finished in oloroso sherry casks. The result is a dram as full of delicious sensory contrasts as a trip to Tokyo”. Officially launched in the UK in late 2023, the packaging for the new limited edition was brought to life by Japanese artist, Yamaguchi Akira, known for his bird’s-eye view designs. Dr. Bill is reportedly hidden multiple times in the artwork. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... This is classic Glenmorangie, filtered through a different lens to just the right degree to create something that is both familiar and also new and exciting. The nose sets up the “tale” pretty cleanly: brightly sweet with vanilla and caramel dominant, but soon revealing layers of orange peel, tea leaf, some white pepper, and an umami richness that evokes soy-sauced mushrooms. Excellent balance, with a jasmine note coming forward after some time in glass. Chewy and fruity on the palate, here a mix of sweet clementines and almond nougat spar playfully on what quickly emerges as a light and lively experience. While the attack is gentle and accommodating, the whisky soon reveals more depth, bubbling up some flavors that are a little hard to pin down. Oaky, nutty, and increasingly savory, the whisky builds to a finish that offers notes of polished wood and more pepper, though the dessert-like sweetness is never far away. I’m not sure this evokes Tokyo exactly — to me, Tokyo will always taste like ramen and robots — but I’m not hung up on it. ...Indeed it doesn't belong here, ha-ha. As I said, just a little 'Japanese' joke. This is a marriage (lovely term) of whiskies aged in mizunara (for a finishing I suppose), bourbon and sherry casks. Just a few years ago, we weren't thinking there would be so many of these 'rare' mizunara oaks that distillers are so fond of these days. Mind you, even Chivas Regal use them; Japan sells. Colour: straw. Nose: a fresh, citrusy Glenmorangie, with some chalk and clay, cider apples, lime and, perhaps, hints of fresh-sawn pinewood. Small quantities of liquorice allsorts and coconut balls. Mouth: very good, very juicy, very fruity, pretty much within its regional style. I know that's controversial but despite very different equipment, especially the stills, both neighbours Dalmore and Balblair are also producing this fresh and fruity style as long as no heavy sherry's involved. Juicy fruit, all-vitamin juice, melons and peaches, limoncello, orange brioche, small bananas, just a little spearmint too (is that the mizunara?)… Finish: not too long but clean and fruity. This is one of those whiskeys that continuously evolves in the mouth, progressing from a sweet, syrupy beginning of coconut macaroons, apple, and spices, to a creamier plateau of citrus, stewed fruits, and chocolate. Dewar’s Master Blender and Malt Master for Aberfeldy, Stephanie Macleod, is also passionate about wine. Marrying her two interests, she set out to see how different red wine casks effect whisky flavour. The first release in the series was a dram finished in Pomerol wine casks from Bordeaux. Subsequent bottlings have followed. This 2022 edition sees Aberfeldy finished in Bolgheri Tuscan red wine casks imparting robust, dark fruit flavours and an intense oak finish to the already fruity malt. Macleod takes a very active role in these maturations, repeatedly monitoring their progress ensuring that the malt doesn't get overwhelmed by red wine character. In this experiment, cherry frangipane and vanilla spice are said to be keynotes. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The casks used in this release came from Bolgheri, a small region of Tuscany. The Tuscan region is typically known for their Chianti wines, though Bolgheri has the distinction of introducing the world’s first “Super Tuscan Wine’. The terrain in Bolgheri is similar to the Bordeaux region in France (rocky limestone near the Tyrrhenian Sea), allowing non-native grapes from France, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, to be grown and used in the regions wines. Knowing that the same grapes grow in both France and Italy, its easy to see why Stephanie landed on using casks from the Bolgheri region....The idea to finish malts in red wine casks is an interesting idea, though hard to tell exactly how much it contributed to the final product. While the nose is a dense mess that’s hard to sort through, the palate is warm and inviting, with much complexity. Some water does help to open up the nose and palate, letting the Tuscan cask become more prevalent, yet it still seems like it could pull some more weight. - whiskeyreviewer.com

Wines off the Crayères Vineyard in the Wrattonbully region serve as a reminder that terra rossa soils do exist outside of Coonawarra. Wrattonbully lies adjacent to Coonawarra and shares some of the distinctive ochre-red clay over limestone soils of its famous neighbour. The quality of Crayères Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz sourced off these soils is obvious. The Aussie red duo come to the glass, bright, fresh and purple-hued. The blend – 66% Cabernet, 34% Shiraz – exudes über-friendly Shiraz aromas, subtle and red fruited, with a touch of Cabernet-led earth and autumnal leaves with a light savoury influence. Less sweet fruited and spicy and definitely more dark cherry, bramble, earth and herbals to taste, concentrated and fleshy, with a warm embrace of oak. The palate is well defined in fine-knit tannins that persist, bringing good length. A classic style of Aussie Cabernet Shiraz producing a supple wine of some distinction. Seamless, too. Bottlings under the Old Mate label represent the first barrel picks to make it out of the USA and are exclusive to Australia. Aged six years nine months - only slightly longer than its sibling Bourbon - this single barrel selection might be initially cagey on the nose but coats the mouth with oily rye, becoming dense, chewy, bittersweet and gently tannic before a slow surge of dark chocolate, peppermint rock candy and dark rye bread. The finish leaves a spicy warmth followed by toasty American oak and hints of caramelised fruits. Distilled and aged in Indiana from a mash bill of 51% rye, 45% corn and 4% malt, this intense but relatively sweet expression maintains controlled tension until the last. Bottled in Kentucky. 57.61% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Winter mint, leather, brown butter, honey tea, fried dough; light apricot and peach jam on the finish, before rounding out with oak tannins, pepper, and vanilla. This spent a chunk of its life in metal and concrete warehousing; lending to the light tropical fruit and sweet notes, the rye spice is underlying the whole profile for a richer mouthfeel and complexity.
