This one comes from Greenock. Ferments in cement. Honestly, one of the best full flavoured, and affordable red, of Barossa, I’ve tried this year.
Succulent, dark fruited, intense. Geez this is rich and ripe but wow that is so well mediated by the chalkiness of tannin and saline, briny minerality and graphite things going on. Depth, silkiness, supple things going on. Ripe, dark cherry, panforte, cola, aniseed, alpine herbs and white pepper. Hazelnut chocolate and bacon bone here too. Fresh. This is delicious. Drink 2024-2030.

A wonderfully perfumed, silky textured and highly moreish Pinot.
This delicious Pinot Noir was made from two clones (114 and MV6) and comprises a whole bunch component, which was fermented separately using maceration carbonique. Each component was matured separately in new (40%) and seasoned Italian coopered French oak 500 litre puncheons for a period of 12 months.
Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. The wonderfully perfumed nose evokes aromas of violet, red to dark cherry, strawberry and subtle rhubarb with some delicate anise, forest floor and dried herb and spice notes also chiming in. Silky textured and highly moreish, the palate features red to dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb flavours. Notions of dried herbs, forest floor, bramble and spice are also apparent. Excellent power wave with cashmere like tannins. Finishes long and supple.

A monumentally sized Shiraz that’s pure decadence.
In Scottish terminology, ‘The Laird’ refers to the Lord of the Manor. This single vineyard Shiraz comes from an old vineyard in Marananga planted in 1958, a plot which remains the focus of envy amongst many of the region's winemakers. Previously owned and operated by the legendary Malcolm Seppelt, the vineyard was purchased by Torbreck in 2014 and is perfectly sited with the dry grown, original Barossa clone vines facing south east. The berries are typically small and concentrated and usually harvested in two separate passes.
The French oak selected for the maturation of this wine is considered to be some of the finest in the world. Referred to as Dominique Laurent's 'Magic Casks', the wood is selected from the incredibly tiny and highly prized Troncais forest. The staves are hand split in the French tradition and twice as thick as machine split staves. As a result of the extra thickness the barrels are able to sustain an extended maturation process due to the tighter porosity that comes with the extra wood. Maturation took place in the new hand crafted French oak barriques for a period of 36 months. The barrels were stored in their own temperature controlled, ancient stone shed. In short, no expense has been spared.
Impenetrable pitch black heart with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Engulfing the olfactory senses are heady aromatics of blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate complimented by vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Decadently rich and possessing a vintage port like density and concentration, the monumental palate is overwhelmed with lavish dark plum, dark chocolate and toasty vanillin oak flavours. Earthy mocha, traces of leather and spice also chime in. Boasting dynamite like power and a voluptuous texture it has a velvety yet muscular tannin structure. Finishes with explosive length and incredible persistence.

The 2020 vintage was the third in a string of dry hot years, and this was marred by disastrously low yields, owing to heat and 80 kilometers per hour winds during the flowering. The 2020 The Laird is from the Gnadenfrei vineyard in Marananga, planted in 1958. The Marananga growing area is known for producing powerful, muscular, tannic Shiraz, and I tend to find the full-throated shout of flavor and concentration to be both convincing and a little exciting. The Laird does exactly this, holding back for no person and providing no subtlety nor mystique. Tasting it, one wonders if these things are strictly necessary anyway; here, we have unbridled power and intensity, old-vine tannic thrust and a black hole of impenetrable fruit, with notes of peat, leather, peppercorns, sweet roasted meat, pan juices and forest moss. It's an iconic wine that has retained its soul and purpose over the years, decisive, distinct, potent and precise, haunting and evocative. The dry-grown vineyard has been there longer than many of the people saying it can't be done. There's something in that. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025-2050.

Intensely focused and powerful, with densely packed aromas of blackberries, licorice, graphite, olive tapenade, cured meat, roasted coffee beans and violets. The palate is full-bodied with firmly framed tannins and a deeply viscous yet refined mouthfeel that gives layer upon layer of cedar, bitter chocolate, walnuts and baking spices. Made from vines planted in 1958. A savory, powerful wine with a with a high level of sophistication. Drink or hold.

By any measure a mind blowing example of Barossa Shiraz.
The second release of this new flagship addition to the Torbreck portfolio, the Forebear is a single vineyard Shiraz that dates back to the 1850’s and pays homage to generations of Barossa vignerons. Maturation takes place in new French oak barriques for a period of 24 months.
Super dense inky black core with an equally deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass with extraordinary force are potent aromas of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry which are complimented by some vanillin cedar, earthy fennel, subtle dark chocolate, leather and spice notes. Exceptionally powerful and intense yet showing more refinement and freshness than the Laird, ultra rich dark plum, blackberry, liquorice, blueberry and dark chocolate flavours coat the palate with a tidal wave like energy. Extending across the back half are spicy vanillin cedar, earthy fennel, delicate mocha and pepper elements. Opulently textured and dense yet highly finessed and seamless it possesses beautifully polished, tightly structured tannins. Concludes with stratospheric length. Hold onto your hats when you drink this!

The 2020 The Forebear is sourced from the oldest plantings in the Hillside Vineyard in Lyndoch—12 rows planted in the early 1850s. For this tasting, the wine has been open now for three hours, and yet it needs more in the way of oxygen than what it currently has. The wine remains aromatically closed, with notions of black fruit, exotic spice, charry oak and forest floor. This has peat, old leather, jarrah and black cherries in profusion. The palate is shaped by intense graphite tannins, which feel closely knit and exclusively the property of old vines; they are silty and settle in the mouth—if you need a visual—like watching a pint of Guinness settle in the glass. A monumental wine, it needs space and quiet to be able to absorb the layers of complexity and undulating waves of flavor through the finish. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025-2040.

Positioned on a slope overlooking two large lakes, the site expresses remarkable varietal character and complexity. Now under the care of the Farr family, Nick Farr manages the vineyard with the same attention and dedication as his Geelong estate.

Spice grip and char then softness, then more tart bright sinewy notes. The nose is petals and perfume, then darker, richer barrel notes. It has a really lovely aroma. Actually, calling it lovely diminishes it somewhat, this is unique, complex and entirely appealing for those looking for something more from a glass of Pinot Noir. There is a different oak profile maybe, something smokier, something more angular. It really works with this wine, even if I’m wrong about the new oak regime. Whatever it is, be it new or just more present, adds a layer to this wine. The Irrewarra only improves with each vintage, it seems, and this is no different. I sat with this for a little while and those spice notes just kept delivering, and each sip or sniff offered something new and delicious.

I had to check the notes for the previous release to make sure I wasn’t indulging in hyperbole two years in a row. The 2024 Irrewarra Chardonnay is brilliant. Lovely white gold in the glass the palate cool from the fridge yet immediately giving. It has a softness that defers to finer notes of acidity, ripe citrus and barley sugar; delicate honey and creaminess. In a world where making everyone happy is next to impossible, this wine, in my opinion, goes as close to universal appeal as it can. Generosity combined with finesse, flavour and restraint. It may seem contradictory, but this is a wine in which you see that conflict play out in the glass. It’s very, very delicious. As always, the big problem will be getting enough to drink and also keeping some in the cellar. I found myself glugging rather than sipping, as it is such a pleasure to drink.

Double Gold Medal Winner in the 2016 & 2017 San Fransisco World Spirits Competition.
Yet another independent bottler hits Australian shores, boasting a strong reputation for quality. Founded by Andrew Dewar Rattray in 1868, the company began trading as an importer of French wines, Italian spirits and olive oil. More importantly, the firm established itself as a specialist in the field of blending and storage of malt and grain whiskies. After several changes in ownership, it returned to the family and is presently owned by Tim Morrison, previously of Morrison Bowmore Distillers and fourth generation descendent of the founder. The company’s resurgence came about in 2002 with the bottling of a ‘new’ Stronachie. In April 2004, using his extensive industry knowledge, Morrison then bottled a selection of his own handpicked whiskies and the A.D. Rattray Cask Collection was born. Plans for their new Glasgow-based distillery were approved in 2014.
Peated to 35ppm, Cask Islay is assembled from up to twenty casks from the one distillery, mostly x-bourbon barrel matured, though some ex-sherry hogsheads are reportedly in the mix. It is unashamedly Islay in its semi-sweet, sooty peat character that's complexed by suggestions of orange cake, cough lozenge, hints of smoked fish and later, banana cake. Because this series is bottled at 46% with zero chill filtration, the whiskies are surprisingly concentrated. Here, the medium dry, spicy profile features sooty malt and vanilla with some apparent sherry influence towards the finish as this gets more dried fruit-like. There's also real staying power with Fisherman's Friend carrying the aftertaste. A sit-back-and-relax island treat at a very reasonable price. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

...A.D. Rattray! Glad to meet one of their recent bottlings, I had thought they were, well, gone. Or busy with the Outer-Mongolian market. We had an early batch of their Cask Islay in 2011, and thought it was pretty good (WF 83). Colour: white wine. Nose: reeks of young Caol Ila, which can’t be bad news. Apples, garden bonfire, seawater, whelks, oysters, fresh almonds, and lemons. There. Mouth: purrfekt, with some impeccable ashy smoke (very CI indeed) and more almonds, lemons, apples, and those tiny green crabs that people would rather throw into wild broths and soups. Oh and apples, naturally. Okay, I had mentioned apples before. Finish: rather long, very ashy, kippery, and with apples and lemons in the aftertaste. Comments: a great batch despite the youth and the (relative) simplicity. Not much depth, but all the rest is perfect. Welcome back, A.D. Rattray! 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Burns Nectar is a long-established single malt from an undisclosed Highland distillery. This "guid auld Scotch drink" is known for its softness and versatility. A simple, sweeter style, it offers notes of shortbread, vanilla, almond, coconut and white pepper with a crisp, oaky finish. Pictured on the bottle, the label honours the famous Scottish poet, Robert Burns, aka "Scotland's favourite son". The lyricist and farmer born in 1759 and is now generally known as Scotland's national poet and enjoyed a whisky or three. The rich, spiced berry flavours make an indulgent contrast to the refreshing citrus flavours of the ten. Un-coloured and non-chill-filtered, it's good to see Rattray maintaining the higher abv in this super value series. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Despite the finish, it got a lot of sherry, modern profile, of course. More in the direction of PX, very sweet, toffee, orange peel, apple and almonds. On the palate there is a clear hint of oak, a bit bitter, slightly tingling, very spicy, again orange or orange jam and a hint of red fruit. Quite long finish, spicy, slightly bitter, warming. ...Tasting it fresh in 2023, we find a whisky with an outsized nose of fresh granary notes, showing as a bit leathery at times, with the lightest touch of smoke evoking aromas of smoldering underbrush. No fruit, no real sweetness, just the essence of cereal. The palate kicks in with more to offer, though the grain-heavy backbone is never out of focus. Well-roasted cereal, almost overcooked at times, find room for some brighter notes of applesauce, a squeeze of lemon peel, and some sugary shortbread character. Uncomplicated as it develops, the finish melds sweetness with cereal notes, eventually developing into something resembling sweetcorn, served on vanilla wafers. Layered with deep, succulent fruit this is a terrific Cotes du Rhone from the family behind one of Chateauneuf du Pape’s greatest estates.
Midnight black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Sailing through the nostrils are elevated aromatics of black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry infused with herbs du Provence. Some scorched earth and pepper notes are also evident. Rich, juicy black raspberry, liquorice and ripe black cherry fruits explode across the palate with plenty of intensity and power. Lending further nuance are notions of scorched earth and peppered dried herbs. A fleshy mouthfeel is counterpointed by slightly chewy tannins. The long, succulent finish laced with peppery dried herb elements. A super impressive Cotes du Rhone that delivers fantastic value.

If this chardy were in a rock band, it would be more than a backup singer to the lead vocals of Heytesbury – it would also belt out a few solos. It has its own voice. A little fleshier with white stone fruit but, of course, it comes with grapefruit and ginger flowers, fennel fronds, some neat phenolics and oak spice, the acidity pure and fine. It has delicious leesy/smoky/flavours. It’s a lovely drink and there's no need to wait to drink it. Drink by 2033.

A delectable, fleshy textured blend layered with succulent fruit.
A homage to the Spanish wines of Priorat, merging very old bush vine Grenache (70%) and spicy dry grown Carignan (30%). The Grenache component coming off vines planted in the 1940’s. The two varieties were co-fermented with 19% whole bunch fruit included and maturation taking place in old French oak puncheons for a period of 6 months.
Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a red to dark red hue. Aromas of dark raspberry, liquorice, plum and cherry stream through the nostrils followed by some provincial herb, scorched earth and subtle pepper notes. The delectable palate is layered with succulent dark raspberry, plum and cherry fruits. Notions of liquorice, scorched earth and peppered dried herbs the undercard. Fleshy textured it has a velvety yet sturdy like tannin structure. Concludes long, juicy and peppery.

A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, it is the fruit of a growing season defined by fully 30 organic phytosanitary treatments and a harvest that concluded on October 8. It checks in at 12.4% alcohol and pH 3.77 (for Gruaud, a rather low number).

Profound and very beautiful aromatically. Yet slightly introvert and a little closed at first. Damson, blueberry and black berry, black currant and subtle cassis with gentle aeration. Blanched almonds and a little of their creaminess. In the mouth, there’s some Griotte cherry, a hint of peony and maybe lily of the valley too. Succulent and luxurious in its texture. Suave, quite full and ample in frame, this pushes at the cheeks. I love how the fresh juiciness seems to gather at the top of the palate and, with a sensation of greater viscosity, glide down the cheeks like ‘tears’ descending the sides of a glass. Not, of course the density and concentration of the last couple of vintages, but beautifully managed, very vibrant and fresh and yet with no astringency or dryness. In fact we have a lovely juiciness on the finish and we are left with a very persistent sensation of chewy grape skins.

A mystery Orkney. Could it be Scapa? The notes from the bottlers describe a peppery-smokey character, so it's the other. Not a mainstream Highland Park that most will be accustomed to, which is what you want from an independent. At first, mezcal-like, and subtle smoke indeed, instead, a rather fresh, grassy, crisp expression with trace peat. Fascinating and strangely compelling compared to the official bottlings, once attuned to the right amount of water it makes for a good aperitif. Otherwise, add an ice cube or two, release the oils and richen up the experience. Mimimal water is required. One reviewer sums it up as "...a great summer whisky. Lovely honied malty waxy notes; a good ex-bourbon maturation". It's out of the ordinary for the age statement, but at this price and ABV, grabbing a bottle is't much of a gamble. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Barely a brand until the last few years, Tamnavulin has suddenly catapulted to become the fastest growing Single Malt Scotch in the world - partly due to maturing stocks being re-racked into high-quality wood and partly due to the stills being replaced in 2010 to produce a more complex and full-bodied distillate. This bottling represents one of the early runs from the 'new period'. Cough lozenges and Ovaltine, also vaguely cut grass-like on the nose, sweetening after air contact; the first taste feels tense and needing water. Given time we have a well-endowed, medium-bodied malt of some presence: tea biscuits, dark chocolate and warming spice, circling back to the faint citrusy, grassy edge found on the nose. Glentauchers is generally considered a middling distillery, but one that's catching more exposure via independents, probably because casks are still reasonably priced and readily available. This beefy, tongue-tingling, drier-styled expression has a rich fruit'n'nut chocolate / digestif biscuit character with a weight and mouthfeel that resembles quality Benrinnes. The Bourbon wood influence is minimal. In fact, if you had to guess, you'd probably say European oak or second-fill sherry. Its simplicity is offset by a booming, warming finish where a meaty-gravox character re-emerges, followed by hints of toasted bread and honey. While Ardmore is probably best after 15 years, there are an increasing number of indies around that are generally good values as young-to-middle agers. This is one. Uncut, very approachable with broad brush strokes of chimney soot and dry earthy peat reek perfectly matching the low-key sweetness of the malt. Something faintly fruity develops at the finish, like dried pineapple or green apples. Overall pretty standard for Ardmore, though perhaps deeper and more oily than many recent examples. 243 bottles from an x-bourbon barrel. 52% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Behind all those busy, raucous spices, it is remarkably pure with deliciously defined flavours of vanilla oak and sponge cake, underscored by milk chocolate, light caramels and an oily finish. Precocious, and nothing that a little water won’t temper. Ben Nevis is a whisky for true malt-hunters: high quality, a distinctive make and not widely distributed, which is probably why most indie bottlers endeavour to have some in their range. This one feels like the distillate is really talking ('distillate-driven' as some would say) but you need to be patient. A closed nose, waxed peels, then vaguely grassy... given time develops enticing suggestions of pineapple chunks and green apples. The balance is fine-tuned. Peppered water crackers, followed by a green apple-pear fruitiness mingling with light vanillas. Ends lipsmacking and refreshing - like young Calvados eaux de vie. Add water and it's a little more grassy but retains enough of that crisp, fruity character that typifies many young Ben Nevis. 303 bottles from an x-Bourbon cask. 58.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Balmenach is reserved as a blending component so it isn't currently bottled by owners, Inverhouse. In our limited experience, it seems to require a good 15-20 years to unfold. This young, fairly bold example takes some time in the glass to blow off a sharp citric edge and give way to richer notes of powdered beef stock, Ovaltine and dark chocolate. Chewy and full-bodied, packed with bittersweet dark chocolate and hints of roasted nuts, the finish is brisk, vanilla-laced, faintly fruity, medium dry and slightly nutty. Add a dash of water and you're in for a mouth-filling experience. 54.5% Alc./Vol. 293 bottles from an x Bourbon cask. Non-chill filtered.

Bourbon matured, but smells slightly nutty and sherried, like there's an old-school oloroso influence through the whiffs of alcohol. The nose needs coaxing to draw out notes of cocoa and malted milk but remains reserved. Nippy yet approachable, delivering a fairly mainstream Glenrothes profile; digestif biscuits, muesli and chewy, drying oak flavours, water broadening the mouthfeel, softening the prickle and adding an Ovaltine-like edge. Similar to a ramped-up version of the official ten year old; a malty-malt that improves with time in the glass. The yield was 124 bottles at 62.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Often seen as the most elegant of the First Growth wines, Chateau Lafite Rothschild has long been considered one of the greatest wines from not only Bordeaux, but from anywhere in the world. Prices too reflect its status as the most collectable wine in Bordeaux, spurred on since 2008 when it ruled the Chinese fine wine market. While the vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, each year the proportions vary according to the vintage, normally with Cabernet Sauvignon accounting for 80-90% of the blend.

A blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2024 Lafite Rothschild offers up aromas of minty blackcurrants, violets, incense, loamy soil and cigar box, followed by a medium-bodied, pillowy and open-knit palate built around tangy acids and powdery tannins, concluding with a discreetly herbal finish. Harvest began on September 24 and concluded on October 4, delivering a Lafite in something of a throwback style, nodding to the wines made here in the 1970s.

The 2024 Lafite-Rothschild is a sensual, elegant wine very much in the style of the year. Plush and enveloping, with lovely forward fruit, the 2024 is very Lafite, perhaps a bit reticent, but super-expressive just the same. Black cherry, pomegranate, blood orange and a kiss of espresso all build in the glass, framed by quintessentially finessed Lafite tannins. The 2024 is sublime. I expect it will be one of the to be one of the top wines in the Médoc when all is said and done. Drink 2034-2064.

Rich texture, this stands head and shoulders above many in the vintage, with graphite, crayon and cassis bud rather than exuberant black fruits. This is precise, savoury, delineated, floral, gunsmoke, juicy, captures the effortless elegance that Lafite does so so well, and it totally delivers. Harvest 23 September to 7 October, 32hl/h yield, above the Pauillac average, 16% press wine included in the blend. Director Eric Kohler's 33rd year in Pauillac. I am giving a slightly earlier begin drinking date than usual, but I am certain this will age exceptionally well as Lafite always does. Drink 2032-2050.

Pauillac; 96% Cabernet Sauvignon; 3% Merlot; 1% Petit Verdot; a final yield of 32 hl/ha and representing just a third of the total production; 12.9% alcohol; the first vintage certified organic; tasted at Duhart-Milon with Saskia de Rothschild). Quite plump and plush for the vintage. Like its stablemate Duhart this is very spherical in its shape in the mouth, with gloriously refined cashmere tannins encircling the fresh, bright, crisp and crunchy dark berries and the black cherries – just à point – that form the dense and compact core around which the wine is structured vertically. Horizontally, the wine is again highly structured by a very well-defined central spine around which the graphite seems to gather with the tannins in this dimension stretching out the fruit over the palate. Very classical, very pure and precise, very focussed and always tender, soft and gently seductive. Almost opulent, but never quite, the austerity of the vintage reining it back and rendering this a little more ethereal and also a little more intellectual in the process.

Rich yet not heavy finishing fresh, refined and juicy.
Matured for 15 months in French oak. Impenetrable inky black heart with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Elevated dark plum and liquorice scents evolve out of the glass complimented by hints of choc mint, vanillin cedar, earth and spice. Rich and amply weighted yet not heavy, generous dark plum and liquorice fruits effortlessly roll across the palate. Spicy vanillin cedar, earth and delicate choc mint characters lie underneath. Velvet smooth tannins with an underlyingly sturdy feel. Finishes fresh, refined and juicy.

Grown on plots of shiraz that are 50 and 20–25 years old respectively. Matured in 20% new French oak barriques for 15 months. This is a soft, supple shiraz with good depth of flavour and general appeal. Indeed everything here feels seamless. It tastes of plums, mint and roasted cedarwood, and it doesn't put a foot wrong throughout. Fine-grained tannin is the icing. Drink by 2031.

Supple, light and juicy showing plenty of whole bunch influence and freshness.
From bush vines planted in 1968 with 80% whole bunch fermentation. Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Fragrant scents of violet, red raspberry and strawberry blossom out of the glass with some dried herb, light earth and spice notes also chiming in. Supple and light across the palate with juicy cherry and strawberry fruits featured over a dried herb, earthy clove and spice back drop. Partial whole bunch fermented and matured for a short time in French oak barrels of which 21% were new. Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black tinged edges and a light red hue. Aromas of red cherry, rhubarb and subtle strawberry mix with notes of bramble, dried herbs and spice. Making a supple entry onto the light to medium weighted palate are cherry and rhubarb flavours. A delicious Chablis with plenty of intensity and a river stone like feel.
Located in the north-west sector of Chablis in the village of Maligny, Pierrick Laroche runs this family estate which was established by his father in the 1970s. After getting a degree in oenology from Beaune, Patrick travelled the world, doing various internships to gain experience before returning home to start making wine and take over the family vineyards for himself. In 2010 he ceased selling grapes to the local co-operative and produced his first vintage to great acclaim.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Pear, lime and green apple scents drift through the nostrils with good intensity mixing with some oyster shell, subtle dried honey and slate notes along the way. Delicious pear, lime and green apple fruits are delivered with plenty of intensity and carry a river stone like mouth feel. Subtle oyster shell and stony mineral elements ensue. Brisk acidity with a long shapely finish.
