- Jean Fillioux Moulin Rouge XO Extra Grande Champagne 1er Cru Cognac (700ml)Cognac, FRANCE$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 40%

This bottling commemorates the dedication, passion and savoir-faire that have gone into both ventures over the years. Filled with Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie aged for up to 30 years, the special presentation decanter showcases the Moulin Rouge theme fittingly, accompanied by its own bespoke red display box with gold accents adding a touch of glamour. The perfect gift to a Cognac lover or Moulin Rouge enthusiast! 40% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... A tremendously dark and fully flavoured Cognac. The nose provides wonderful aromas of woodspice, vanilla bean, citrus rind, honeysuckle, tropical fruit and old sweet wine. The palate is rich in mouthfeel, with a thick vanilla custard note, a touch of sweet bananas, dense oak paneling and toasted spices. The finish lingers with exquisite dried fruits and sweet grapes that last and last. An ideal after dinner dram.
- Clairin Ansyen 49 Months Vaval Single Cask #VA16CR-1 Ex-Caroni Rum (700ml)HAITI$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 47.1%
Australian Exclusive.
Rum chasers on the hunt for hard-to-find libations will be excited to get their hands on Haitian “Clairin” (artisanal rhum). Like village Mezcal, these heirloom spirits have been produced by farmers, catering for their local communities before other markets. Almost unknown outside of Haiti where they're generally dismissed by the upper class as a peasant's drink, Clairins deliver the distinctive aromas and flavours of Agricole rum or Brazillian Cachaca – and more. Once you taste them, you'll realise other white rums aren't worth worrying about.
Small craft distilleries known as 'guildives' are scattered throughout the country, often in the middle of the sugar cane fields. Villages like Cavaillon, Saint Michel De L'Attalaye and Barraderes each have their own version of Clairin emphasising their own 'terroir'. “The person with the most money in the neighborhood [often owns] the guildive, producing clairin with a donkey pressing the cane juice” explains Garcelle Menos, account manager for Boukman Clairin. “Most of the time, they’re a combination of column and pot stills, very small columns and very small pots.”
Un-hybridised sugar cane varieties with names like “Cristalline”, “Hawaii” and “Madam Meuze” are grown for their amazing intensity of flavour, despite being low yielding and so ignored by large-scale rum producers. Spontaneous fermentations are long, creating complex spirits, with every batch different from the last. Clairins are unaged, and unlike most rums which have no regulations regarding ‘flavour enhancements’, they have absolutely nothing added.
This rare, barrel-aged expression from the Vaval farm distillery is a landmark having been exclusively bottled for Australia (to our knowledge, the first of its kind). Distilled in 2016 by Fritz Vaval in Cavailon, 49 months in an ex-Caroni rum barrel has imbued a sublime secondary smokiness that sings alongside the natural intense, grassy and fruity flavours of the Clairin. Barreled on the 28th of May 2018 and bottled in June 2022, more than one taster has stated "It's hard to believe that's agricole!" 47.1% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Upon tasting, the vibrant aroma likely greets you first, where fresh, grassy notes of sugar cane blend seamlessly with the richer, deeper scents of oak and tropical fruits. The palate is likely to offer a delightful complexity, featuring a balance of earthy sweetness from the cane, intertwined with smoky whispers and spicy, oaky nuances. The finish is expected to be long and satisfying, leaving a warm impression that invites further sipping and contemplation.

The first Yarra Valley Pinot from Munda comes from a mix of red-brown clay, deep red volcanic soils, and granite. It is a wine with an alluring and well-composed nose: crunchy cranberries, polished red cherries, wild violets and some lovely vanilla, musk stick, a touch of cardamom, and cedar. The palate is juicy and, once again, well composed on its fruit and oak profile. More apparent is that the blood orange and earthy character, with elegant, granular tannins, giving a texture that reminds me of a chestnut. It is a well-made, balanced wine that is still in its prime. Drink 2024-2030.

Good lord, this is good. Initially, the nose opens with graphite and steel shavings, but the fruit beneath it rises up and absorbs almost everything in its savoury, red embrace. This is a stunning Riesling and amazing value. It might sound like the proverbial broken record but anyone claiming to like Riesling who is not buying, drinking and cellaring these is not serious. Rob Diletti sees this as his flagship. The fruit is all from the estate, from six different blocks, aged between two and four decades. Only the first press of 450 litres/tonne is used here. A bright lemon hue, it is leaner and more elegant than the Skywalk, as expected, with notes of florals, oystershells, citrus including fresh lime and grapefruit pith, and a line of saline acidity. Focus and length are present. This is easily a ten to twenty year proposition. A wonderful Riesling and one which is must-have value. Drink 2024-2044.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionThe 2023 Chardonnay hails from a mild to cool (and dry) season in Margaret River, one that, by all accounts, will be a superb vintage for Chardonnay. On the nose here, the wine leads with lemon butter and white peach, nashi pear and green apple, with brine, cashew nuts and spring flowers. The acidity in the mouth is typically intense in young Xanadu Chardonnay—part of the legacy of the house style that eschews malolactic fermentation—and so it presents as I would expect it to, in a season already imbued with zesty natural acids. There is plenty of race and pace in this wine, but there is some creaminess, too. It will be better in a few years, I believe, although much of this cuvée will be purchased and consumed early. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2035.

Alc. 15.5% - 2013 Velier Beenleigh Tropical Ageing 10 Year Old Cask Strength Australian Rum (700ml)Queensland, AUSTRALIA$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 59%
Alongside its official bottlings, Beenleigh has begun a collaboration with Europe's La Maison du Whisky and the acclaimed independent bottler, Velier. After two very interesting previous releases (the 2006 15 year old and the 2015 five year old), Beenleigh is following up with a 2013 Single Vintage. Made from molasses produced and processed in Queensland and fermented for 3 - 4 days, the rum was (unusually) 'reverse distilled': First in a single column and then re-distilled in a pot still, similar to those found in Guyana at Demerara Distillers Ltd. It was subsequently aged for a decade in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery in Eagleby, in Queensland's tropical climate, with an angel's share of >25%. This new reference is quite unique in putting Australian rum on the world map. Expect something powerful and spicy. Bottled in 2023, no sugar has been added. 59% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose : Fresh and expressive. Russian leather, prune kernel, grapefruit, rosewater, and sumac. Palate : Vanilla, dried apricot, kaffir lime, orange zest, cardamom, and lavender. Finish : Long and assertive. Guava, camphor, pine resin, black cherry, dark chocolate, and almond.
- 2019 Habitation Velier Long Pond 3 Year Old Cask Strength Jamaica Pure Single Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenABV: 60%
In 2016 Velier launched the Habitation Velier portfolio - the world’s only range of Pure Single Rums. These are rums from a single distillery, distilled exclusively in pot stills. Complex and typically more suitable to long ageing, Velier's selections are entirely matured in the tropics, ensuring a natural, though accelerated development of flavours at the expense of a higher angel's share (>22%).
Always highly anticipated, Long Pond has become a Jamaican reference point for rum enthusiasts. This youthful edition was distilled from molasses in 2019 and aged for three years. It's worth noting that after closing from 2012 to 2017 for renovation, the Long Pond distillery was almost destroyed by a flash fire that sarted in the cane fields. It ravaged the fermentation room and fresh rum stocks (approximately 65,000 litres were destroyed). In that context, we're lucky to have received this rum at all. The flames spared its famous John Dore stills and no less legendary Blair column stills, prized for capturing the deeply mineral, empyreumatic and medicinal character for which this magnificent ester-rich marque is so well-known. 1200 bottles are on offer globally. No sugar has been added. 60% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... "I love it! A fine rum with balance and elegance on the palate and finish, but you have to be patient and disregard the first nose. It probably lacks age, but I definitely like Long Pond." - rum-x.com
"Overall, a beautiful, wild Long Pond, which also makes a good figure in the Mai Tai." - rum-x.com
Notes from the bottlers... Nose : Rich, heady. The incredible first nose is empyreumatic (apricot kernel, turpentine, diesel), exotic (persimmon, mango, guava), oxidative (balsamic vinegar, macerated fruit) and syrupy (hot cane sugar). Allowed to breathe, fragrances of vetiver, lavender honey, lime and jasmine give an idea of the breadth and complexity of the aroma palette. Palate : Taut, lively. On the attack, notes of petrol and very ripe mango appear alongside chocolatey and spicy (ylang ylang, clove, saffron) flavours. On the mid-palate, roasted pineapple and plantain banana juicily and smoothly enrich the flavour palette’s exotic register. The even fruitier end of the palate reveals notes of peach, pear, kaffir lime and coconut. Finish : Long, concentrated. The powdery finish (cocoa, rice pudding, grated ginger) is remarkably soft. The slender end of the finish gives its own take on the exotic register of the nose and palate. On the retro-nasal olfaction, a vanilla, spicy (cinnamon, ginger) and herbaceous (sugar cane) cane sugar spreads across the palate. The empty glass is in turn medicinal (elastoplast), camphoric and mellow (artichoke heart).

Allen Meadows - BurghoundMid lemon yellow. The bouquet has a little softer orchard fruit compared to the Bourgogne, and is very true to its Meursault roots. Here a more elegant nose resembles that of the Charles Maxim save for a broader range of floral elements. Allen Meadows - BurghoundFine pale yellow. The bouquet bursts out of the glass, but with a sense of tension quite different from Charles Maxime. Partly floral, partly fresh greengage, but with some riper tendrils curling round the edges. There is a backbone to this wine, and a sense of precision, which is deeply impressive. Then comes the flesh you would expect from this relatively sunny summer. This wine makes quite a statement. Good natural acidity is part of the equation. Like the Bouchères, this is also relatively firmly reduced. On the palate though there is both excellent freshness and verve suffusing the finer and sleeker middleweight flavors that exude evident minerality on the impressively complex, long and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is excellent and a wine that should easily repay a decade plus of keeping. Highly recommended particularly for those who enjoy cellaring their whites. Drink through 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundMedium to full lemon yellow. The nose has the sensuous richness which characterises Charmes, and the oak seems more prominent. No more new oak has been used for the Charmes but a particular barrel may have given this buttery edge. Jean-Pierre plans to fine this a little more to bring it more into line with the others. The core wine on the palate has the distinction of the other Meursaults, though the buttery note resurfaces at the finish. I have lowered the score based on today’s tasting but have confidence that the final wine will merit more. In fact, the finish encourages me to go up again. Nine barrels, two new, one an experiment, one traditional in its toasting. Drink from 2029-2036.

Nestled in the heart of Meursault, Domaine Latour-Giraud is a family-run estate known for crafting wines that beautifully express the village’s rich terroirs. With a focus on Chardonnay, their whites strike a balance between depth and precision, often showcasing the generous texture Meursault is famous for while retaining freshness and minerality. Whether from village-level plots or prized premier crus, Latour-Giraud’s wines reflect both tradition and a thoughtful, modern approach to winemaking.
Other Reviews....
Ripe and pretty aromas include those of mostly red berries and earth nuances. There is both good vibrancy and detail to the attractively textured middleweight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the mildly austere and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is firm enough to repay up to a decade of cellaring, which is just as well as it could use better overall depth. Worth considering, especially since this is a bit finer than usual. Drink through 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundMid crimson colour. The bouquet takes a little coaxing but has a clear density of dark fruit. There is a nutty note with cherry kernels as well, this is quite austere but a sound Pommard which continues well across the palate. Drink from 2026-2030.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside Burgundy - Four Pillars Bloody Bandwagon Non Alcoholic Gin (700ml)Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$42. 99Bottle$515.88 Dozen
We all want or need some time off the drink every now and again. But time off the drink shouldn’t mean time off decent drinks altogether. Hence, Four Pillars have been quietly working away to bring the botanical flavours of their most popular and iconic gins to life…but in an alcohol-free spirit. This was no simple feat. In fact, it’s probably the single biggest challenge they’ve faced since they started making gin in 2013. Because this isn’t gin. Gin has to have alcohol in it. To make Bloody Bandwagon, they actually do use Shiraz grapes. But because they haven’t been fermented there’s no alcohol. So you’re getting that same Shiraz flavour and colour without the alcohol. Win, win. Use Bloody Bandwagon as you would your ‘regular’ Four Pillars Gin but maybe a bit more liberally, so you can allow the flavour of the non-alcoholic spirit to shine through.

Glendronach 18 Year Old 100% Sherry Matured Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - New PackagingHighlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $299.99$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenABV: 46%"Allardice" has been dropped from the title of this snappy new presentation, however it would appear nothing else has changed. All matured in oloroso sherry casks (according to the website), Glendronach 18 is what many whisky connoisseurs would describe as a sherry bomb: Rich, dark and seductive with feature notes of Christmas cake, rum and allspice married together with aged oloroso, toasted walnut bread and chocolate orange. Put it on your short list of whiskies to try before you die. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... New look! Matured in Oloroso. They mention ‘Spanish oak casks’ on the label, but I’ve always thought that term could be a tad misleading (not just with Glendronach, mind). What exactly is ‘Spanish’ here, the oak, the casks, or both? That said, we were quite fond of the previous 18-year-old ‘Allardice’ (around 86 points), though it didn’t exactly have us swinging from the rafters – we used to prefer the 15-year-old. Colour: amber. Nose: there’s that Mars bar and millionaire’s shortbread note, followed by a hint of tar and damp earth. It’s got that dunnage warehouse feel, which I rather like. Then, as expected, the walnut wine shows up, with a touch of mustard and clove, before we nose into an old tin of black tea. Nothing to complain about. Mouth: perhaps a touch less precise, opening on peppered chocolate and espresso, moving into Catalan rancio, old walnuts, brown tobacco, and finally, oranges. The texture is a bit lighter than I anticipated, but it all works beautifully. Finish: medium length, with black tea, walnuts, and chocolate with a coffee edge. Comments: I’m not sure if it’s full-on Oloroso maturation or a three-year rerack or so, but I think it’s very well done. For my money, there’s absolutely no reason to think it’s any less good than the Allardice – and hey, I rather prefer the new look. 87 points - whiskyfun.com
[2024 tasting] Densely sherried, the nose is rich and laced with oxidized aromas evoking nutty, winey Pedro Ximenez sherry over oloroso. That’s but an illusion, of course, as this is aged fully in oloroso casks. The impact is impressive all the same: Bold, brooding, and rich, the nose evokes oily leather and furniture polish alongside spicier, racier notes of cinnamon red hots and some cayenne — surprising given its generally tame 46% abv. A not-insignificant level of sea spray salinity is clearly detectable, the Highlands at work. The palate quickly pours on sweeter elements: Molasses, brown butter, warm Coca-Cola, plenty of spice notes. Rich and enveloping on the tongue, the whisky evokes austerity and intrigue: Turkish rug shops, old London barrooms, Asian spice markets. Increasingly nutty as the palate moves toward the finish, the well-sherried experience approaches Madeira at times with its intensely wine-laden quality. Dark chocolate and caramel sweeten up the lengthy, enveloping finish, a healthy baking spice quality — more ginger-driven here — clinging to the back end alongside a sweetening raspberry element. Outstanding stuff. - drinkhacker.com

2024 Lawson's Dry Hills GewurztraminerMarlborough, NEW ZEALAND$19. 99Bottle$239.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 2 Years (2025-2027)ABV: 14%Closure: StelvinThis luscious, intensely flavoured Gewurztraminer was sourced predominately from Lawson’s Home Block vineyard which was planted in 1981. The 2024 vintage was low yielding, and the dry season meant the grapes ripened perfectly, packed with flavour.
Luscious and exotic, this is a superb example of Gewurztraminer.
Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green skirting the edges. Incredibly potent nose with exotic scents of lychee, rosewater, musk and Turkish delight captivating the olfactory senses. Some pear and subtle ginger spice notes also chime in. Engulfing the mouth are luscious lychee, Turkish delight and rosewater flavours with notions of musk and ginger spice the undercard. Excellent concentration and power with a long off dry finish that’s balanced by fresh acidity.

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.
Other reviews... It’s the latest batch of the well-known and now very expensive 18yo ‘sherry’. It’s actually not pure 1996, as it says ‘1996 and earlier years.’ I had found last year’s 1995 very excellent (WF 89.) Colour: amber. Nose: feels like home. It’s probably not as deep and complex as the pre-1980 vintages, and certainly more focused on fruitcake and toffee, but indeed it’s a lovely nose. Glazed chestnuts, honey sauce, touches of fennel or dill, dried porcinis, cigars, toasted brioche and, yeah, sultanas. Really a perfect nose, and the 43% vol. make it pleasantly approachable, in both senses of the word. Mouth: it’s a little narrow, perhaps, less majestic and ample than the old ones for sure, and maybe a little too toffee-ed and malty (Ovaltine-malty.) Raisin-filled chocolate, praline, butterscotch. The mouth feel is perfect, though. Finish: good length, spicy and toffee-ish. Peppered fudge. Comments: very, very good, of course, I’m just missing a little more complexity on the palate. But as they say, ‘it does what it says on the tin.’ 87 points - whiskyfun.com -

In Italian, chiave = feminine. That's your first hint about this little beauty of a sangiovese. In music, chiave is the key that forms the tonal basis of a piece of music. That's your second hint. Undeniably gentle and expressive, with a tannin pulse that won't stop, La Chiave takes sangiovese to the next level. Cherry, dried cranberry, licorice, tilled soil, briar, dried herbs and an enduring marzipan savouriness tied neatly – and taut – in complex tannins. Drink by 2033.

Jeni Port – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionFrom certified biodynamic fruit, eked from sub-alpine reaches of meager granite. The wines here are serious, make no mistake. While the Genesis is the flagship, this straight sangiovese is growing in trajectory, nudging the totem of top quality. Scents of clove, alpine herb, wild fennel and mint, effortlessly welded to a pin bone of tannin and brushwood freshness, sashaying the fray long. A delicious, mid-weighted and immensely savory wine.
