The Macallan Harmony Collection Guardian Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $499. 00
    Bottle
    $5988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 44.2%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

The fourth travel retail exclusive release in Macallan's annual Harmony Collection, Guardian Oak is matured in a combination of first fill sherry seasoned European oak casks and refill sherry casks. In the context of the series, it's a reminder of the importance of both the connection with our natural environment and of preserving it. The illustration features a human figure – Davonna, intricately intertwined within the branches of a European oak tree. This design emphasises the importance of the connection between the natural world and human experience. It conveys the life and wonder that bloom when humans are “In Harmony with nature.” This bottling is another collaboration with Cirque du Soleil, celebrating 200 years of The Macallan. 44.2% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Rich dried fruits of dates, figs and raisins mingle with orange peel, dark chocolate and hints of warming nutmeg. Taste:    Sticky ginger syrup sweetness and a burst of orange lead to opulent glazed dates, cherries and plump sultanas alongside rich oak and sweet spices. Finish: Long and rich with oak and star anise.

Scapa 16 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Older Bottling
    Orkney Islands, SCOTLAND
    $399. 00

    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

A now discontinued presentation of the elusive Orcadian, replaced by a higher ABV version in 2024.

Other reviews... A soft, easy-going whisky with a foundation of honeyed vanilla, caramel custard, and mouth-coating maltiness. Floral and brine notes are sprinkled throughout, as are cocoa, white pepper, and subtle edible seaweed. Soft malt and brine finish. A whisky with a gentler personality when compared to most other island malts, making it a nice introduction to the style. I would, however, like to see this whisky bottled at a higher strength and not chill-filtered. I’d be more than willing to sacrifice some drinkability for greater intensity and more subtle nuances. Still, it is an enjoyable whisky, and enthusiasts of its predecessor -- Scapa 14 -- should also like it, albeit at a higher retail price. 85 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Itinerant Spirits Vansetter Coffee Liqueur (700ml)
    Ballarat, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 20%

Itinerant Spirits teamed up with local roasters, Karon Farm Coffee to create this "built for cocktails" liqueur that uses Vansetter Vodka as a base with added Panela sugar and orange peel. The opening aromas have an earthy, bitter dark chocolate quality, softened by air contact, accenting roasted coffee beans and liquorice bullets. Silky on entry, espresso and cocoa flavours bring a natural bittersweetness as well as a sense of elegance; The finish is pleasantly drying without compromising length or authentic coffee character. On its own, it's a breezy, relaxed alternative to more saccharine styles and our first choice for Espresso Martinis. 20% Alc./Vol. Batch 0001 tasted.

Notes from the producers... Chocolate, caramel and coffee with a hint of orange.

2011 Compagnie des Indes (Darsa Distillery) 12 Year Old Single Cask Guatemala Rum (700ml)
    GUATEMALA

    Bottle
    $2159.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Distilled from molasses in 2011 at Darsa Distillery (Destiladora de Alcoholes y Rones Sociedad Anónima). A shy nose is compensated by good power and balance on the palate; Plantain and raw sugar flavours, a grassy freshness and suggestions of iced coffee and milk chocolate through the aftertaste. Besides its naturalness and effortless delivery, this has a concentration punching above its ABV. 352 bottles produced. 43%.Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

The Famous Grouse 21 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Perth, SCOTLAND
    $450. 00
    Bottle
    $5400.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some light creasing/scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

Debuting in the 1980s, these long discontinued bottlings of the Famous Grouse were the real deal, with a good proportion of well-aged Macallan making it into the mix. As you can imagine, the quality of the whisky was high, and reportedly, mostly drawn from x sherry casks. It was also an expensive blended malt to maintain, hence production ceased around the time of this edition in 2007. The contents are matched by a luxurious presentation. 43% Alc./Vol.

Auchentoshan Solera Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Lowlands, SCOTLAND
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

Finished in legendary Pedro Ximenez casks, this is the darkest Auchentosan we've ever seen. It's said to be one very tasty Lowlander, very chocolatey, with almonds, Toblerone bar and orange chocolate flavours. Bottled at 48% Alc./Vol. with zero chill filtration.

Other reviews... A wonderful Auchentoshan sherry with a perfectly matched strength. Intense, deeply rich, harmonious, bright, but not at all like the standard profile of the distillery. However, I am sure that with such great sherry casks not only in the Lowland but also in the Speyside region, any unpeated whisky will have the same stunning sherry profile without any hints of the signature character. At times it seems that many years old natural Oloroso casks were used here, and not PX, this profile is so similar to that one. Noble Oak was chosen for the pairing precisely because it used Oloroso casks. The sherry part of the Noble Oak profile is also very good, but not as bright and powerful as Solera. But it does not suppress the aromas of the distillate typical of Auchentoshan, in particular, fresh, vegetal, spicy, woody and mineral notes. This adds a few more layers, making the Noble Oak profile significantly more diverse. It may be strange, but I like both of these releases equally, despite their cardinal differences. - whiskybase.com

An explosion of passionfruit and gooseberry flavours with crisp acidity and a long racy finish.

The fruit for this wine was machine harvested at night or in the cool of the morning and immediately crushed and pressed. The juice was then fermented with a variety of aromatic yeast strains in stainless steel tanks - the sole aim being to reflect and preserve the flavours and aromas grown in the vineyard. A small portion of the juice was fermented with a non-saccharomyces yeast and 2% was barrel fermented. After fermentation, the wine was kept in contact with the lees for three months. This classic technique enhances creaminess and integrates flavours.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Herbaceous gooseberry, passionfruit and grassy asparagus aromas fill the nostrils with hints citrus, flint and minerals also evident. Exploding across the palate is a concentrate of passionfruit and gooseberry with some citrus, asparagus, herbaceous grassy elements and minerals extending across the back half. Crisp acidity with a long racy finish.

From three sites in the north; this was fermented with native yeasts, then aged in French puncheons for 10 months. The Jane Eyre signature of fragrance and clarity is here, wedded with the intensity that Tasmanian pinot can often yield. Dark fruits are joined with the red, with black and red cherries, redcurrant, rosy-pink florals, some warming spices, turned earth and sweetly fresh forest floor note that will no doubt build intriguingly with tertiary development. It’s a wine of poise and detail, the palate supple, textural and effortless. Drink by 2034.

Rich and succulent yet remarkably fresh with a fleshy mouth feel and long finish.

Epsilon is the project of Aaron and Julie Southern (Julie is a member of the Kalleske clan) who own vineyards in the Northern part of Barossa. As the familiar story goes with so many growers they sold off their fruit to larger wineries until a chance meeting with the Massena boys Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins. Under their guidance they convinced them to start up their own brand in 2004 and build a winery on the property. Maturation takes place for approximately 12 months in new and seasoned French and American oak with only the best batches making the final blend.
Midnight black heart with a bright dark purple hue. Fragrant dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry scents evolve out of the glass followed by smoky vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered meat notes. Rich and succulent yet remarkably fresh, the medium to full bodied palate is decorated with dark plum and liquorice fruits which meld into a spicy vanillin cedar, subtle blueberry, fennel and pepper back drop. Rich and long with a well fleshed yet grippy conclusion.

Sourced from Yalumba’s famed Menzie’s vineyard, the name ‘Cigar’ is derived from the unique cigar like shape of Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa strip. Maturation takes place in a mix of new French oak hogsheads, barriques and Hungarian oak hogsheads and one year old American oak barriques with balance in older French, American and Hungarian oak for a period of 16 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Red to black currant, mulberry and red liquorice aromas emanate from the glass followed by some vanillin cedar, subtle earth and bay leaf notes. Rich blackcurrant, mulberry and red liquorice fruits flood the mouth carrying with them medium to full body weight. Excellent concentration and freshness with a sturdy tannin structure lending firmness to the back half. Spicy vanillin cedar, earth and bay leaf accents form across the back half. Long, well fleshed yet grippy conclusion.

Named for the strip of Terra Rossa soils shaped like a cigar that runs through Coonawarra. As it is with the power of suggestion, the Cigar invokes the savoury spices of tobacco, cedar and sandalwood. It's layered with bilberries, blackcurrants and prunes, too. Some coffee and poppy seed tones. It is a wine in the Yalumba line-up that stands out for its heavily laden spices and muscular tannins. Oak is significant and will allow the wine longevity in the cellar. If you gravitate to the seduction of quality fruit and richness of oak, this is for you. Drink by 2034.

A slight change of direction with Cannonball, now mainly a single-vineyard wine at 90/6/4% cabernet/malbec/merlot. This is excellent. It’s a refined, elegant style, almost pared back, with regional flavours of cassis and blackberries, menthol and eucalyptus, lightly spiced and lightly oaked (20% new mostly puncheons and aged 10 months). The tannins are superfine, the acidity light and bright, the palate fuller bodied but not weighty. All in all, a gorgeous drink. Drink by 2035.

The Estate is celebrating its 135th anniversary in 2025, a remarkable achievement, and as part of that, they have introduced a new range, their Old Vines expression (it was not as though they were short of different ranges already, but, as they say in the classics, too much of a good thing is never enough). A 57/43 blend, after basket pressing, the wine matures in French oak for a year and a half. A dark garnet/maroon hue here, with a wonderfully evocative nose. There are notes of dried herbs, aniseed, beef stock, smoked meats, blackberries, leather, aniseed and cold tea. The palate offers focus, concentration and abundant but very fine tannins. Impressive length here and the intensity never wavers from start to finish. There is a touch of vegemite on the palate and it is immediately evident that the oak is immaculately integrated. Expect this to provide pleasure for at least the next ten to twelve years, and for it to improve further during that time. Drink 2025-2037.

Rich, creamy textured flavours of ripe peach, nectarine, dried honey, cashew, citrusy nougat and spice are counterpointed by a keen line of acidity. Concludes long, refined and fresh. In their price bracket, these delicious Edradours are considered the best old-school sherry whiskies money can buy. Typically the culmination of 3-4 carefully selected first-fill Oloroso sherry butts, they stand as proof positive that very tasty sherry bombs are achievable at 46% ABV. And of course, the additional mouthfeel that comes from not chill filtering is the icing on the cake. If you revel in whiskies that offer classic notes like dark chocolate, red fruits, orange peel, dried plums, Christmas compote, cinnamon and cloves without paying $200+, these little gems from one of Scotland's smallest distilleries are the way to go. God bless Andrew Symington and Iain Henderson for continuing to offer value for money in this increasingly rarified Scotch whisky segment.

Three second fill bourbon barrels make up this Ardmore. What's unusual is that they previously held Islay whisky, adding an extra peaty edge to the already peaty Highlander. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... peat takes center stage on the palate, yet it allows a floral bouquet to shine through. This whisky is indeed “homeopathic,” as medicinal flowers are remarkably present—mint, chamomile, verbena. Yet another secret Orkney lands. Being of middle age, this could either be on the cusp of maturity or still a bit young. The fact that it's non chill filtered means it will fatten up with an ice cube or a few drops of water. Drawn from several Bourbon hogsheads, the usual suspects like heather smoke, notes of vanilla and lemon plus a touch of coastal character should be evident. In short, a distillate-driven bottling. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

There’s been a single cask version or two of Fleeting, but this one is a combination of maturing whisky in two casks types. You'll need a magnifying glass at hand to read the front label, which tells us the liquids spent five years in Oloroso sherry barrels, then six years in old barrels that held fortified Pinot Noir with an outturn of 1800 bottles. Couvreur is known for pulling some stunners out of wine casks, and the very dark purple ruby colour of this bottling anticipates something special. Likely to be a bit porty though not quite as sweet as you might expect. 49% Alc./Vol.

"Utterly glorious official Craigellachie." - whiskyfun.com

Other reviews... Here, Craigellachie is slimmed down and appears in slightly leaner guise, with an aromatic spritz of vetiver-heavy male cologne coming across first before fresh fruits follow on. More crisp and with slightly more obvious toasted structure. The pineapple distillery character is now dried, before the palate shows sweet chocolate pudding, char, honeysuckle, herbs, and white fruits. A classy (and large) package.  89 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Colour: light gold. Nose: it's all on hay and fruit peel, dry white beers and dry wines (old white Bordeaux) plus white/root vegetables. Celeriac, parsnips, asparagus, chalk… Mouth: awesome, really awesome. Salty dry sherry, mustard and walnuts… Well this will be a very short note but this is wonderful. Stunning nutty combo in the background (walnuts, pecans, macadamia). Finish: long, salty, mustardy, manzanilla-y. Green curry sauce in the aftertaste. Comments: this one reminds me of a curry restaurant in Glasgow, named Dakhin (89 Candleriggs). Best Indian food in the UK, better than the Bombay Brasserie in its heyday (I can tell you that I've used and abused that place in my not-so-distant youth). Utterly glorious official Craigellachie. 90 points - whiskyfun.com

A fine Pinot Noir from the Denmark region of Western Australia and well packaged, love the label. The colour here is a crimson/garnet with a sapid nose of florals, redcurrants, rose petals, mushrooms, aniseed and liqueur cherry notes with hints of undergrowth. One stylish young Pinot, marrying the right amount of weight and richness with elegance. Attractive summer fruit basket aromas in red cherry, cranberry and redcurrant with lifted dried flower florals and spice. A fine almost delicate rendition of Pinot Noir: upfront, red fruited and spiced with textural qualities, before finishing on a sour cherry, morello cherry note. Woodsy spiced oak provides the pulse of this enjoyable, easy drinking wine. More of a short-term as opposed to long-term proposition in the cellar. Drink 2024-2028.

Oloroso matured Glendronachs are usually the most sought after. This edition was distilled in 1992 and bottled in 2023 at 54.5% Alc./Vol. yielding 633 bottles. Non chill filtered.

While Glendronach single cask whiskies haven't been explicitly discontinued, they have completely disappeared from the distillery's website. Currently the Australian market has only three lines allocated. It’s said that their rarity is due to limited output and growing demand. That situation is partly due to Glendronach's closure from 1996 to 2002 which impacted the availability of older stock. It would also explain the distillery’s recent re-focus on core range expressions that coincided with a packaging upgrade in 2024. Typically offering outturns of around 600 bottles per cask, the single barrel selections are famous for offering snapshots of a particular cask at a specific point in time making each one unique. The current imports exhibit beautiful deep mahogany colours anticipating whiskies that are layered, lush and decadent - also more intense and expressive compared to major competitors like Macallan. This shipment is an opportunity to secure some Highland classics that otherwise may never have been available in Australia.

The palate leads with tart grape, perfectly balanced by the rich spice of oak and pepper on the finish. You'll discover notes of figs and dates, with gentle flutterings of milk chocolate throughout. 2024 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou Pre-Arrival Offer
    Saint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

As a relatively large estate in Saint-Julien, the 75 hectare Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou estate is planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. They also own a small parcel of land in Haut-Medoc. Changes in the winery, and a greater focus on parcel selection for the Grand Vin has resulted in a reduction in output from around 20,000 cases per year in the 1980’s to around 10,000 cases today. And the wines have never looked better. The pair of 2009 and 2010, along with the 2016 are considered standouts for the region, intense and concentrated efforts that will live for many years to come.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Ducru-Beaucaillou is showing well at this stage, unfurling in the glass with a perfumed bouquet of dark berries, flowers, gentian and fresh licorice, interwoven with delicate spicy nuances. Medium to full-bodied, layered, and seamless, it is lively and refined, with somewhat firm tannins leading to a gently grippy finish. This was harvested between September 30 and October 15. Drink 2030-2044.

    Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate

The 2024 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a sleek, elegant wine. Silky tannins give the 2024 its distinctly mid-weight, lithe personality. Readers will find a gracious Ducru built more on persistence and nervy tension than size or opulence. Blue/black fruits, lavender, cloves, menthol and chocolate open over time. It will be fascinating to see how this ages. Drink 2034-2054.

Excellent depth with very good concentration. Lots of dusty, small-grained tannins. Densely packed, with nervy minerals, blackberries, dark chocolate, violets and cassis. Full-bodied and very fresh, with a lengthy finish. Structured and tightly framed. Shows good potential. 86% cabernet sauvignon and 14% merlot.

    Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.com

As to the Grand Vin, the 2024 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is based on 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, resting in 100% new oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by a terrific 2024 that defies the challenges of the vintage. Pure cassis, darker currants, graphite, crushed stone, and sappy violet notes all emerge on the nose. It's medium-bodied, with a beautifully layered, concentrated mid-palate, ripe yet velvety tannins, and a great finish. This classic Saint-Julien will benefit from bottle age and is another brilliant effort from the team. It's one of the richer, more structured wines in the vintage, yet it remains balanced, precise, and never overdone.

Lovely aromatics on the nose, deep vivid purple. Floral scents and lots of Cabernet markers, dried mint, clove, aniseed and blackcurrants. Cool and crunchy straight away, this has a gorgeous smooth texture with ripe and concentrated fruit. I like this, it feels restrained and not overdone with a silky fruit profile and firm but fine tannins. There's a softness to this and a long length with a push of flavour. It has a deep, dark fruit aspect - not too sharp or sour, balanced in terms of acidity and fruit with wet stones, graphite and liquorice on the finish. Elegant and enjoyable. 3.8pH. 2024 Chateau Leoville Poyferre Pre-Arrival Offer
    Saint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Chateau Leoville Poyferre is part of the trio of properties formed when the large 200 hectare Leoville estate was divided in 1840. Seen as the most plush and exotic of the group, Leoville Poyferre has also been the most consistent since 2000. While much of the plantings are intermixed with those of Leoville Las Cases, the Grand Vin comes from a total of 60 hectares, and is planted to 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The estate also produces a second wine, Pavillon de Leoville Poyferre, along with the previously unofficial second wine Moulin Riche which comes from a dedicated 21 hectare plot.

    Other Reviews....
Offering up aromas of jammy berries and toasty oak, the 2024 Léoville Poyferré is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Medium-bodied, dense and blocky, it's firm, tannic and chewy, with some green characteristics vying with its creamy patina of new wood. Harvest took place between 24 September and 10 October, and some lots saw some reverse osmosis.

    William Kelley - Wine Advocate

The 2024 Léoville-Poyferré was picked from September 24 to October 10 at 26.42 hl/ha. There was some reverse osmosis on the Merlot and Cabernet Franc varieties. Quasi-Pauillac in style, it offers quite backward black fruit, hints of melted tar and graphite on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and quite succulent with fleshy ripe tannins, tobacco-laced black fruit, brown spices and light undergrowth. With a fine supple landing on the finish in typical "LP" fashion, this constitutes a delicious, early-drinking Poyferré that will be more approachable than other vintages. Drink 2028-2050.

A bit closed and almost steely at the moment. At the same time, there is depth and huge structure, showing black cherries, mulberries, fine spices and violets. Full-bodied, this has heaps of very small-grained, dusty tannins on the palate and a long finish. A concentrated wine. Wait and see.

Looking at the Grand Vin, the 2024 Château Léoville Poyferré is based on 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It shows deep purple hues and classic notes of cassis, lead pencil, graphite, crushed stone, and violets. Pure, polished, and elegant on the palate, it has perfectly ripe tannins and plays in the forward, charming style of the vintage while still delivering plenty of depth and richness. While Arlett offer several wood-finished variants, this edition offers something out of the ordinary for whisky drinkers. It's appropriate that the Tessendier brothers selected their local apéritif as the support here, as they are firstly producers of premium Cognac. Just a few months in x-Pineau des Charentes casks has added secondary notes of dried apricots, wild honey and cinnamon to the cereal character of the whisky. The flavours complement the malt, becoming better defined and juicier through the finish. A higher ABV gives the palate more presence without adding heat or prickle, and there's also lovely sweet-dry balance. The most impressive finishing in the lineup, if Pineau des Charentes is your thing, this is your dram. 48% Alc./Vol.

    Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $58. 99

    $707.88 Dozen
    ABV: 22%

Loaded Barrel's latest offering sees natural butterscotch flavours blended with their four-year-old single malt. The result may not be as complex as traditional Scotch Whisky liqueurs, but it avoids the intense sweetness of butterscotch schnapps. Shaken well before tasting (as per the producer's recommendation), the nose feels moderated by the base spirit. It's sweet, with tooth-coating butterscotch and milk chocolate flavours, yet it retains a lightness that allows the sugars to 'breathe', extending the palate length and avoiding the clunky, cloying character typical of the category. A one-trick-pony, but in the context of dessert liqueurs, this is a success. Even if you don't have a sweet tooth, one taste shouldn't be out of the question. 22% Alc./Vol.

Park VS Carte Blanche Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Cognac Park is the premier brand from Distillerie Tessendier, a Borderies-based house established in 1880. Today, fourth-generation brothers and Master Blenders, Lilian and Jérôme Tessendier run the show. Not limited to blending, they also distill from their own 60 hectare estate and buy around 40,000 hectoliters from winemakers, maintaining relationships that span several generations. The entry-level VS is a 50/50 marriage of Fins Bois and Petite Champagne cognacs aged for a minimum of three years, but most of it is closer to six. The goal was to create an "energetic Cognac" that grants bartenders 'carte blanche’ to use it as they wish in cocktails, however, it feels like what they’ve made here would be quickly lost in mixing. Tasting it on its own is essential. The first pass elicits pure, floral-soft aromatics, coaxing out scents of ripe pears, apricots and citrus blossom. That soft touch is echoed on the palate which is restrained, elegant and less overtly fruity than many a VS, also impeccably pure. Dried fruits, poached quince, dry triple sec and lingering wisps of passionfruit in the lengthy rebound make this very classy, understated VS seem out of place in its classification. Highly recommended. 40% Alc./Vol. Tasted from 50ml sample.

    $1799.88 Dozen

A 30ml sample yields atypical rum aromas; Subdued, vaguely vegetal, eaux de vie-like, developing more familiar, though still muted notes of molasses and vanilla after 2-3 minutes of air contact. A light entry follows with soft, medium-dry flavours of dried fruits, aged grappa, shortbread and vanilla with a warming finish that resembles sherried malt whisky. Hard to pin down. A great throw-in at your next blind rum tasting. 429 bottles produced. 43% Alc./Vol.

    2024 Chateau Haut-Brion Pre-Arrival Offer
    Pessac Leognan, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $775. 00
    Bottle
    $9300.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Long before the 1855 classification of Bordeaux, Chateau Haut-Brion were renowned for their quality and style. When Thomas Jefferson visited the region in 1787 he noted the quality of wines in the area, creating his own hierarchy that listed Chateau Haut-Brion along with Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux, and Chateau Lafite and the finest wines of Bordeaux. This same elite group were later given First Growth status, and Haut-Brion remains the only estate outside of the Medoc to claim this honour. Located near the city of Bordeaux, the 48 hectare Chateau Haut-Brion vineyard is planted to 48% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot for the reds, while the whites are a mix of 51% Semillon and 49% Sauvignon Blanc.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Haut-Brion is more perfumed than La Mission Haut-Brion, unfurling in the glass with aromas of raspberries, cassis, dark berries and spices mingled with elegantly floral touches. Medium to full-bodied, layered and sappy, it has a firm texture and powdery tannins, leading to a long, spicy and lead pencil-inflected finish. Composed of 47.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37.5% Merlot and 15.3% Cabernet Franc, this vintage features one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Franc in recent years—comparable to vintages such as 1993, 2004, 2010, 2011 and 2020—and should gain harmony with the élevage. In the context of the vintage, this is a notable success, owing in large part to Haut-Brion’s intramural position in Pessac, where the estate’s terroir benefits from slightly warmer average temperatures than properties located outside the city, contributing to more complete ripening of the grapes. Drink 2028-2044.

The 2024 Haut-Brion is dark and brooding in demeanor, but obviously not as tannic or forbidding as it can be in the early going. All the Haut-Brion signatures are very much present, but they're portrayed in a decidedly understated style that speaks to the personality of the year. Black fruit, scorched earth, spice, tobacco and leather build with time in the glass. The 2024 is a super-classy Haut-Brion. There's gorgeous substance here. Drink 2034-2054.

This year, the style of Haut Brion shows through with transparency, beautiful balance and precision. Fine austerity, with excellent minerality, dark olives and red and dark berries. Structured on the mid-palate. Beautiful depth for the vintage, with really fine-grained tannins and a lengthy finish that lingers. So much vibrancy and finesse. A classic vintage.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the 2024 Château Haut-Brion be the wine of the vintage, and while it's not going to make you forget any of the recent truly great releases, it has more depth, suppleness, and charm than the vast majority of wines in the vintage. Ripe blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, crushed stone, and violets all define the aromatics, and it has nicely integrated oak, a layered, ripe, seamless mouthfeel, and building tannins. It's a beautiful, layered, elegant Haut-Brion.
