Produced by a husband and wife team, this Grenache blend is designed to deliver a juicy, unpretentious and joyous wine that still retains plenty of interest. It delivers all that in spades. Sourced from several vineyards located throughout the Barossa, it’s a blend of 46% Grenache, 39% Cinsault and 15% Mataro with a portion of whole bunch fermentation. Maturation taking place in seasoned oak for a period of 8 months.

A juicy and joyous blend that makes for fabulous everyday drinking.

Red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light vibrant red hue. Showing good aromatic lift are attractive red raspberry and red liquorice aromas which are trailed by some fresh herb, red cherry and peppered earth notes. Carrying a fresh, bouncy feel across the light to mid weighted palate are juicy red raspberry and red liquorice fruits. Infusions of fresh herbs, earth and peppered clove lend further interest. Polished tannins with a long red fruited finish that’s energetic and quite succulent.

*** do a great job with their *** , a blend of grenache, cinsault and mataro, this year 46/39/15%. As the name suggests, it's built for 'drinkin, not thinkin', with a vibrant hue, bouncy, lifted aromatic profile and an airy flow of red fruits, spice, amaro and floral tones on the palate. I'd label this 'chill-safe' if the weather dictates such terms; it's great, light drinking. Drink by 2029.

A blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Mataro from the Barossa providing a cute spin on the traditional blend. Lifted notes of florals with a slightly earthy rose petal character dominant. The medium bodied palate has such beautiful mouthfeel with a smooth seamlessly integrated oak and tannin combination. The sweet fruit is balanced with a slightly minerally savouriness to complete a terrific little wine. Drink 2024-2032.

*** are the masters of reliable drinking and here we go again with the latest * release. Translating to 'unpretentious wine', that sums up what **** do ever so perfectly. Such a versatile blend, this medium-bodied delight delivers in spades.
A blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Mataro (46/39/15), I felt the Cinsault really talks bringing energy, buckets of cranberries and red apple crunch. Loaded with bright cherries, raspberries, chorizo, pan juices, cured meat, cinnamon and earthy spices, it is such an inviting and sessional red wine. Clever blending and fabulous drinking, you are winning with this in your glass.

From a 1957 patch in Blewitt Springs. Trott Vineyard. 33% whole bunch.
Very aromatic, ripe raspberry, rosehip, exotic spice, slight liquorice, orange peel. Medium to full-bodied, but bright, but good concentration, raspberry, balanced acidity, fine stony tannin, albeit with some firmness, and excellent length, with something of an amaro tang on the finish and some peanut flavour. Super wine. It’s maybe a little warmer and more breathy than the Charming Man, but gee, it has impact and power. Drink 2025-2034.

2022 Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine Garden
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA

    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 14%

Hemelrand Vine Garden is a white field blend that changes every year depending on the vintage conditions, as the idea behind is to bottle a wine just as the vineyard produces it. The Hemelrand vineyard, situated on the Hemel & Aarde Ridge at 360 meters above sea level on gravelly clay and Sandstone, was planted in 2010 to Chardonnay, Roussanne, Verdelho, Chenin blanc and Muscat Blanc a petit grain. As mentioned, the proportions of the different grapes produced significantly varies each vintage. The 2022 release is composed of 31% Chardonnay, 29% Roussanne, 20% Chenin, 18% Verdelho and 2% Muscat.

The grapes were hand sorted in the vineyard and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
31% Chardonnay, 29% Roussanne, 20% Chenin Blanc, 18% Verdelho and 2% Muscat – grapes from Hemel en Aarde Ridge. Includes a 5% botrytis portion. Exotic aromatics with notes of flowers, herbs, stone fruit, orange, pineapple and spice while the palate has big volume and tangy acidity. Rich and thick-textured with plenty of flavour.

The 2022 Hemelrand Vine Garden comes from the vines around the winery, and to quote Alheit, "Whatever is in the field goes into the bottle." It benefits from a slightly cooler climate, but there was a bit of botrytis on the Chenin this year. That is detectable on the nose with a touch of wild honey, peach skin and crushed limestone aromas. The palate is fresh on the entry, very well defined with hints of nectarine and wild peach and a very seductive and persistent finish. One of my picks from Alheit this year. Excellent. Drink 2024 - 2040.

Honeysuckle, apricot stones, crushed almonds and baked apples on the nose, with a touch of grapefruit rind. Aromatic grapey and floral character peeping through, but not loud. It’s full-bodied and lightly oily, but cool, elegant and fresh. 31% chardonnay, 29% roussanne, 20% chenin blanc, 18% verdelho and 2% muscat. Drink or hold.

Chris and Suzaan Alheit believe in 'clean and simple winemaking' to honour the Cape's identity. Planted in 2010 on a cool and breezy ridge, this unique field blend showcases some of South Africa’s signature grapes, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, co-fermented with Roussanne, Verdelho, a touch of Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains – just enough to give the nose an exotic and filigreed opener to this food-friendly wine. Straw yellow in colour, with aromas of lemon, beeswax, meadow grass, and white flowers, the mouth-coating succulence balances the unbridled acidity with flavors of lemon drop, sage, and essence of candied ginger. Drink 2024 - 2037.

    $115. 00
    Bottle
    $1380.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Cork

Fire by Night is a single origin Chenin Blanc wine grown on Alheit's own Paardeberg property called Nuwedam, planted between 1972 and 1985 on various east, west, and north facing blocks. These vineyards are the pride and joy of the family, where the pure decomposed granite soils yield wines of clarity and focus.

The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in either cements eggs, clay pots, foudres or old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
Chenin Blanc from the Alheit’s own Paardeberg property planted between 1972 and 1985 on granite. Pear, peach, lime, green apple plus thatch and talcum powder. The palate is tightly coiled – pure fruit and zippy acidity before a very dry finish. Light-bodied but intensely flavoured, this is supremely well judged.
    97 Points
    Christian Eedes - Winemag.co.za

The 2022 Fire by Night comes from the Paaderberg, mainly earlier-picked fruit on granite soils, matured cement and foudres. It offers orchard fruit, crushed granite and light chalky scents that gain intensity with aeration. It coheres extremely well in the glass. The palate is taut and linear, with fine freshness and tension in situ. It becomes brisk and quite saline towards the oyster shell-tinged finish. This is a tensile and edgy Fire By Night this year. Drink 2025 - 2038.

Fresh, zesty and bright, for 2022 Fire By Night is lemony with citrus blossom essences. $683.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Hereafter Here (intentionally similar sounding to year after year, denoting the passage of time) is based on two young vine blocks in Stellenbosch. The main contributor is the Baby Duck vineyard, planted on granite soils on a gentle southern slope in the Polkadraai Hills ward, while the second vineyard is planted in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley on deep red soil.

The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
Mostly a young vineyard Chenin Blanc, grapes from Swartland, Upper Blaauwklippen and Polkadraai Hills plus some older vine parcels from the Paardeberg. Some flinty reduction before pear, peach and citrus as well as some floral perfume on the nose. Good fruit density, well coated acidity and some light grip to the finish. Relatively thick textured (alc: 13.34%) with layers of flavour.

The 2022 Hereafter Here is a mixture of young and old vines due to the higher yields this year, whole bunch pressed with 18 months élevage, two-thirds on the lees. The well-defined bouquet has yellow plum, orange blossom, Japanese yuzu and crushed stone aromas. The palate is very harmonious, with a crisp line of acidity. A linear, almost Zen-like razor-sharp Chenin displaying wonderful nerve on the finish. Superb. Drink 2024 - 2034.

New to the range this year comes the 2022 Hereafter Here made from 100% Chenin Blanc. The nose is zesty, bright and fresh, with notes of lemon oil and dusty citrus blossom. Medium-bodied and with 13% alcohol, the palate offers energetic acidity with a succulent mineral tension before displaying a kiss of phenolic bitterness. The wine continues to uncoil and reveal additional layers of complexity over the long, lingering, food-friendly finish. Just over 32,000 bottles were produced from Chenin Blanc that aged in a mix of old foudre, cement eggs and old barrels. Drink 2024 - 2032.

2022 Alheit Vineyards Cartology Chenin Blanc Semillon
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA
    $84. 99
    Bottle
    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Cartology means the study of maps or charts and the wine itself can be seen as a vinous map or tapestry of the Cape. It’s intended to be a picture of the Cape seen through the lens of her old vineyards in a given vintage. The cuveé is composed of parcels of mature dryland bushvines of heritage grapes, namely Chenin Blanc (93%) and Sémillon (7%). The Chenin comes from parcels in the Skurfberg, Perdeberg, Upper Blaauwklippen, False Bay and Tygerberg. The Sémillon comes from the old La Colline block in Franschhoek.

92% Chenin Blanc and 8% Semillon sourced from across the Western Cape – total production: 27 000 bottles and 240 magnums. Inviting aromatics of pear, peach, citrus, white flowers, thatch and fynbos while the palate shows great purity of fruit, driving acidity and a pithy finish. Poised and linear, the finish wonderfully long.
    96 Points
    Christian Eedes - Winemag.co.za

The 2022 Cartology is whole bunch pressed with no sulfur added until mid-winter with five months in tank on the fine lees. It has a very pure bouquet with yellow plum, egg whites and candle wax. This unfolds beautifully in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a lively opening, citrus-fresh with orange rind and lime. Alheit mentioned how difficult it was to obtain the acidity, but I think he achieved it here. Excellent, even if I don't consider it the best Cartology ever made. Drink 2024 - 2035.

    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Nautical Dawn (the phase between astrological dawn and civilian dawn - dark enough to see the stars for navigation, light enough to hoist a sail) is a single origin Chenin Blanc wine from the False Bay coast of Stellenbosch. Here dry farmed bushvine Chenin Blanc is planted from top to bottom on the hillside of Rustenhof farm in Firgrove (southern Stellenbosch), from where it's possible to see waves breaking only 4kms away. Nautical Dawn is made from a parcel planted in 1978 on the upper part of the slope where the vine rows run with the contour of the hill.

The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in two 2000L Foudres. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
Chenin Blanc from a Lower Helderberg vineyard planted in 1978 on granite. Struck-match reduction before lime and white peach on the nose while the palate shows concentrated fruit and punchy acidity before a gently dry finish. A wine with a pleasing ripeness about it without being too luscious or loose.
    95 Points
    Christian Eedes - Winemag.co.za

The 2022 Nautical Dawn comes from granite soils. It is whole bunch pressed, fermented in a combination of barrels, foudres and cement eggs and matured for 12 months in two 2,000-liter foudres. I find this more expressive and terroir-driven than the Fire By Night this year - the mineralité coming through. The palate is vibrant and almost penetrating, with so much tension. It’s a live wire Chenin that is never shrill but fans out beautifully towards the lemon curd and orange rind-tinged finish, with hints of oyster shell on the aftertaste. Drink 2025 - 2037.
    93 Points
Neal Martin - Antonio Galloni's Vinous

I like the orange fruit hints here like kumquats and apricots underneath crushed rocks, salted almonds and rosemary. Full of flavor, medium- to full-bodied, with intensity and power while remaining so fresh. Drink or hold.
    94 Points
    Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.com

Complex and more lively than previous vintages, the 2022 Nautical Dawn offers better cohesion in the glass with a ripe, rich, round nose. Medium-bodied, the palate provides succulent acidity with a bright mouthfeel before showcasing a delightful mineral tension with a kiss of seaspray across the mid-palate. It concludes with a spicy finish that has me coming back for more. Be patient with this one—you’ll be tempted to open it before it’s time. The wine is fresh and bright and will likely be better with another year in the bottle. 5,100 bottles were produced after resting in foudre. Drink 2024 - 2037.

2022 Alheit Vineyards Huilkrans Chenin Blanc
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA
    $165. 00
    Bottle
    $1980.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

Huilkrans is a single origin Chenin Blanc from the Skurfberg, drawn from dry-farmed bushvine parcels planted between 1974 and 1989 on Oudam farm—a remote, mountainous site rich in red sand and clay, sitting 450m above sea level. These wide-planted, low-yielding vineyards give rise to a wine of weight and gravitas: if Magnetic North is the tenor voice of Skurfberg, Huilkrans is the baritone—deep-toned, brooding, yet unmistakably of its place.

The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The juice was very lightly settled, with no additions, resulting in a raw, cloudy must. Wild fermentation took place in a combination of old barrels (mostly 400L) and large foudres, lasting about a month. The wine remained on gross lees for twelve months, before resting in tank on fine lees for a further six months prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
First vintage of this wine since 2019. Chenin Blanc from Skurfberg vineyards planted between 1974 and 1989 on red sand over clay. Lemon, grapefruit, hay and almond on the nose while the palate shows stupendous concentration, fresh acidity and a decidedly bitter finish – great intensity of flavour. A dramatic wine, full of character.
    97 Points
    Christian Eedes - Winemag.co.za

The 2022 Huilkrans, Chenin Blanc from the Citrusdal Mountains, is the first release since 2019. This is very tight on the nose, delineated with touches of sea spray coming through, perhaps less expressive than I would have liked. Hemmed in at the moment, but bottle age will benefit this cuvée. The palate is much more chatty, with a lovely waxy texture and touches of ginger and lemon rind, stretching out nicely towards the finish. Great potential...but be patient. Drink 2027 - 2040.

Pomelo pith and lime blossom on the nose, with wild rice, almonds and apricots too. Waxy, creamy and sleek, with a medium body and a lively, zesty freshness, even from a hot vintage. Vibrant and very, very alive. Drink or hold.

Displaying a delightful rusticity in the glass, the 2022 Huilkrans offers notes of dusty lemon peel with ripe citrus blossoms before wafting with petrichor and spiced peach skin aromas. Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 47%

Heaven Hill's latest innovation, Toasted Barrel is created using the brand's base model, Elijah Craig Small Batch as a starting point. Derived from a 78% Corn, 12% Malted Barley and 10% Rye mash bill, the whiskey gets its sweet, unique taste from a finishing process that's rarely encountered in American distilling. The company explains, "The process begins with fully matured Small Batch, which is dumped and then re-entered at barrel proof into a second, custom toasted new oak barrel designed in partnership with Independent Stave Company. Made with 18-month air dried oak, the finishing barrel is first toasted and then flash-charred using a moderate toast temperature and toast time. An extensive research and development process resulted in a final barrel toast profile bringing forward dark sugar flavors within the wood to create a balance of smokiness and sweetness after months of finishing.” The end product tastes quite different to the distillery's core lines. 47% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Initially reticent on the nose, with time this reveals gooey caramel, pralines, Hershey's milk chocolate, and a touch of charred mint leaves. It's chewy and occasionally sharp on the palate, with oodles of roasted nuts, polished oak, mint, peppery spice, dark chocolate, licorice, tobacco ash, and char. The medium-length finish holds tingling white pepper, unsweetened chocolate, and more polished oak. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Elijah Craig’s finishing process results in a sweeter, spicier, and admittedly more tannic end product than Michter’s and the Brown-Forman products. Importantly, this finishing process maintains the “straight bourbon” class and type designation, as new charred barrels are used for both the original aging and secondary finishing process (though they are so lightly charred they are referred to as “toasted”)....With Small Batch Elijah Craig typically having an age of 9 years or more, adding secondary aging in a new toasted oak barrel is no small feat. Moreover, this not-so-common technique adds a layer of dimension to the base bourbon. So while it's certainly premium price territory, it’s in line with other major brands that have gone through the additional work required to rebarrel a bourbon in a second new barrel. - breakingbourbon.com

A release of 254 bottles, That Boutique-y Whisky Company have got hold of another well-aged batch from Tennessee, releasing it in 700ml bottles to join its collection of 'Label Editions'. The Boutique-y gang can't disclose the provenance, but this style is only made by a few producers. They've also spelt whisky without an 'e' - a big clue for bourbon buffs... (It's because the distillery is in Cascade Hollow. It's charcoal mellowed and one of the oldest Tennessee producers - and, no, it's not Jack Daniels!) 45.8% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Rich notes of caramelised brown sugar, toasted oak, and creamy vanilla join cinnamon spiced apples, buttery pastry, and gingersnaps. Palate: Caramelised nuts open the way, with rich layers of buttery oak char leading to earthy notes of vanilla and tobacco. Finish: Cigar box spice, a hint of sweet maple syrup, oaken vanilla, and ginger.

For over four generations, the Catena family has grown vines in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza, Argentina. Laura Catena, great-granddaughter of winery founder Nicola Catena, is currently at the helm. Produced from a blend of four vineyards harvested at different times, this excellent Chardonnay is matured for 10-12 months in French oak barrels of varying ages.

Rich and concentrated yet fresh with a wonderfully textured, stony like feel.

Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated white peach and pear scents stream out of the glass complimented by hints of dried honey, wet slate and an oyster shell like minerality in what is a Chablisique like sniff. Rich and concentrated yet stony like in it’s feel, the palate is layered with delectable white peach, pear and lime fruits. Wet slate, infusions of fresh herbs and a smoky oyster shell like minerality ensue. Wonderfully textured and fresh it has a long wet stone laced finish that also has a dash of spice to it.

The classic red variety from Margaret River, this wine is a deep, shining red. The nose is blackberries, delicatessen meats, spices, tobacco leaves and an ever-so-slight oaky note, but it is well integrated and merely adds to the complexity evident here. Attractive dark cherry touches. Fine tannins, a hint gravelly. There is balance and texture here and great length. The palate sees the emergence of more cassis notes and cigar box characters. This is a classy Margaret River Cabernet with ten to fifteen years. Drink 2023-2038.

While it's challenging to pinpoint an exact number of distilleries in Guatemala, it's known that the country has a thriving rum industry, with several prominent distilleries producing high-quality rum. Notably, Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, the company behind the iconic Zacapa brand. The provenance of this bottling is unknown, however the flavours of sweet nuts, dark brown sugar, caramelised fruit, cigar leaves and oaky spices do reflect the Zacapa style. Distilled in 2011 then bottled at 55.9% ABV in Scotland without chill filtration.

    Other Reviews…..
A wine that never disappoints. Based on old, dry-grown vines that are able to rise above any threats in the growing season. The complexity of the wine runs through the bouquet and palate from start to finish. The bouquet has spice and black licorice at its heart, wrapped in blackberry and plum fruit. It will outlive those who cellar it for decades. Drink by 2042.
