Kilchoman Sanaig 2024 Edition Cask Strength Limited Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 57.8%Sanaig and Machir Bay are Kilchoman’s two core products, but only the latter has had the honour of an occasional cask strength release. Prospective samples of Sanaig were floated during a 2021 Feis Isle virtual tasting. No release date was ever suggested and the label had to wait until November 2024 to finally get its own natural-strength iteration. Looking at the colour, you might think they've mistakenly filled the bottle with Loch Gorm. That's down to a high proportion of x-Oloroso sherry casks (the remaining 30% are x-Bourbon). Essentially, this release uses the same recipe as the regular Sanaig, however, we can assume casks have been cherry-picked, then bottled uncut as opposed to the regular release strength of 46% ABV. Impressive from the get go, through that’s fairly standard praise for Kilchoman, the bouquet kicks off with menthol rub, iodine, damp earth and wood smoke with bitter peel and dark chocolate in tow. Creamy on entry, then catapults into a full-throttle mid palate attack, keynotes being cocoa, Oloroso sherry and sweet peat. Bracing spices and alcohol give this a drying, bittersweet finale, trailing off with pepper, elastoplast and nutty chocolate. Feels like there's more sherry influence than your standard Sanaig. Either way, it's an absolute blast for Islay fans. No outturn is stated, but the Australian allocations are likely in the hundreds rather than the thousands. 57.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... From this Islay-based distillery comes an annual expression matured in both sherry and bourbon casks. Smoke on the nose, Grape-Nuts, tasty peat smoke, and barbecue. The palate has heat but is flavorful and not at all spiky, showing pleasant flavors of raspberry compote and an earthy note of pipe tobacco. The finish is long, with red berries, smoke, and peat embers. Smoky, with lively fruit notes that rise above the peat. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...the entry is bold and spicy, with an explosive mix of black pepper, chilli, nutmeg and aniseed, anticipating a palate of dark pastry, chocolate, red fruit (sour cherries, plums, blackberries), sweet liquorice, blood orange juice, pink grapefruit and carob. Fleshy and iodised smoke that envelops the flavours like Linus’ blanket. The addition of water accentuates the marine aspect, bringing sulphurous notes to the surface. The long finish is coastal and full, with a tingle of spices that accompany red fruits and citrus, liquorice, chocolate, coffee and a vegetal, sulphurous vein. This is closer to a Loch Gorm on steroids than the original, which could be seen as either a distortion of the classic Sanaig or a liberation of its nature. A matter of opinion, mine appreciates the fullness of a slightly rambunctious but sincere dram. - Lamberto Lamarina, whiskyart.blog

Nestled in the heart of Meursault, Domaine Latour-Giraud is a family-run estate known for crafting wines that beautifully express the village’s rich terroirs. With a focus on Chardonnay, their whites strike a balance between depth and precision, often showcasing the generous texture Meursault is famous for while retaining freshness and minerality. Whether from village-level plots or prized premier crus, Latour-Giraud’s wines reflect both tradition and a thoughtful, modern approach to winemaking.
Other Reviews....
Here too whiffs of petrol and phenolic character add breadth to the aromas of essence of pear, orange peel and acacia blossom. The dense, sappy and beautifully textured medium weight flavors possess excellent depth and persistence on the balanced finale. This offers excellent quality for its level and is warmly recommended. Drink through 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundMid lemon yellow. The bouquet has a little softer orchard fruit compared to the Bourgogne, and is very true to its Meursault roots. The white fruit continues on the palate and is now joined by a saline note, while the ripe apples give an immediate appeal. There are little waves of flavour towards the back of the palate. Once again the aftertaste is fine, precise and thoroughly promising. Drink from 2027-2032.

Here a more elegant nose resembles that of the Charles Maxim save for a broader range of floral elements. The palate impression of the medium-bodied flavors is finer and more mineral-driven if not quite as concentrated, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, firm, balanced and bitter zest-inflected finish. One to look for. Drink through 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundFine pale yellow. The bouquet bursts out of the glass, but with a sense of tension quite different from Charles Maxime. Partly floral, partly fresh greengage, but with some riper tendrils curling round the edges. There is a backbone to this wine, and a sense of precision, which is deeply impressive. Then comes the flesh you would expect from this relatively sunny summer. This wine makes quite a statement. Good natural acidity is part of the equation. Complex and complete agrees Jean-Pierre. 55 year old vines which never over-produce. Drink from 2028-2035.

Like the Bouchères, this is also relatively firmly reduced. On the palate though there is both excellent freshness and verve suffusing the finer and sleeker middleweight flavors that exude evident minerality on the impressively complex, long and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is excellent and a wine that should easily repay a decade plus of keeping. Highly recommended particularly for those who enjoy cellaring their whites. Drink through 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundMedium to full lemon yellow. The nose has the sensuous richness which characterises Charmes, and the oak seems more prominent. No more new oak has been used for the Charmes but a particular barrel may have given this buttery edge. Jean-Pierre plans to fine this a little more to bring it more into line with the others. The core wine on the palate has the distinction of the other Meursaults, though the buttery note resurfaces at the finish. I have lowered the score based on today’s tasting but have confidence that the final wine will merit more. In fact, the finish encourages me to go up again. Nine barrels, two new, one an experiment, one traditional in its toasting. Drink from 2029-2036.

Ripe and pretty aromas include those of mostly red berries and earth nuances. There is both good vibrancy and detail to the attractively textured middleweight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the mildly austere and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is firm enough to repay up to a decade of cellaring, which is just as well as it could use better overall depth. Worth considering, especially since this is a bit finer than usual. Jasper Morris MW - Inside Burgundy - Four Pillars Bloody Bandwagon Non Alcoholic Gin (700ml)Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$42. 99Bottle$515.88 Dozen
We all want or need some time off the drink every now and again. But time off the drink shouldn’t mean time off decent drinks altogether. Hence, Four Pillars have been quietly working away to bring the botanical flavours of their most popular and iconic gins to life…but in an alcohol-free spirit. This was no simple feat. In fact, it’s probably the single biggest challenge they’ve faced since they started making gin in 2013. Because this isn’t gin. Gin has to have alcohol in it. To make Bloody Bandwagon, they actually do use Shiraz grapes. But because they haven’t been fermented there’s no alcohol. So you’re getting that same Shiraz flavour and colour without the alcohol. Win, win. Use Bloody Bandwagon as you would your ‘regular’ Four Pillars Gin but maybe a bit more liberally, so you can allow the flavour of the non-alcoholic spirit to shine through.

Glendronach 18 Year Old 100% Sherry Matured Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - New PackagingHighlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $299.99$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenABV: 46%"Allardice" has been dropped from the title of this snappy new presentation, however it would appear nothing else has changed. All matured in oloroso sherry casks (according to the website), Glendronach 18 is what many whisky connoisseurs would describe as a sherry bomb: Rich, dark and seductive with feature notes of Christmas cake, rum and allspice married together with aged oloroso, toasted walnut bread and chocolate orange. Put it on your short list of whiskies to try before you die. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... New look! Matured in Oloroso. They mention ‘Spanish oak casks’ on the label, but I’ve always thought that term could be a tad misleading (not just with Glendronach, mind). What exactly is ‘Spanish’ here, the oak, the casks, or both? That said, we were quite fond of the previous 18-year-old ‘Allardice’ (around 86 points), though it didn’t exactly have us swinging from the rafters – we used to prefer the 15-year-old. Colour: amber. Nose: there’s that Mars bar and millionaire’s shortbread note, followed by a hint of tar and damp earth. It’s got that dunnage warehouse feel, which I rather like. Then, as expected, the walnut wine shows up, with a touch of mustard and clove, before we nose into an old tin of black tea. Nothing to complain about. Mouth: perhaps a touch less precise, opening on peppered chocolate and espresso, moving into Catalan rancio, old walnuts, brown tobacco, and finally, oranges. The texture is a bit lighter than I anticipated, but it all works beautifully. Finish: medium length, with black tea, walnuts, and chocolate with a coffee edge. Comments: I’m not sure if it’s full-on Oloroso maturation or a three-year rerack or so, but I think it’s very well done. For my money, there’s absolutely no reason to think it’s any less good than the Allardice – and hey, I rather prefer the new look. 87 points - whiskyfun.com
[2024 tasting] Densely sherried, the nose is rich and laced with oxidized aromas evoking nutty, winey Pedro Ximenez sherry over oloroso. That’s but an illusion, of course, as this is aged fully in oloroso casks. The impact is impressive all the same: Bold, brooding, and rich, the nose evokes oily leather and furniture polish alongside spicier, racier notes of cinnamon red hots and some cayenne — surprising given its generally tame 46% abv. A not-insignificant level of sea spray salinity is clearly detectable, the Highlands at work. The palate quickly pours on sweeter elements: Molasses, brown butter, warm Coca-Cola, plenty of spice notes. Rich and enveloping on the tongue, the whisky evokes austerity and intrigue: Turkish rug shops, old London barrooms, Asian spice markets. Increasingly nutty as the palate moves toward the finish, the well-sherried experience approaches Madeira at times with its intensely wine-laden quality. Dark chocolate and caramel sweeten up the lengthy, enveloping finish, a healthy baking spice quality — more ginger-driven here — clinging to the back end alongside a sweetening raspberry element. Outstanding stuff. - drinkhacker.com

Other reviews... It’s the latest batch of the well-known and now very expensive 18yo ‘sherry’. It’s actually not pure 1996, as it says ‘1996 and earlier years.’ I had found last year’s 1995 very excellent (WF 89.) Colour: amber. Nose: feels like home. It’s probably not as deep and complex as the pre-1980 vintages, and certainly more focused on fruitcake and toffee, but indeed it’s a lovely nose. Glazed chestnuts, honey sauce, touches of fennel or dill, dried porcinis, cigars, toasted brioche and, yeah, sultanas. Really a perfect nose, and the 43% vol. make it pleasantly approachable, in both senses of the word. Mouth: it’s a little narrow, perhaps, less majestic and ample than the old ones for sure, and maybe a little too toffee-ed and malty (Ovaltine-malty.) Raisin-filled chocolate, praline, butterscotch. The mouth feel is perfect, though. Finish: good length, spicy and toffee-ish. Peppered fudge. Comments: very, very good, of course, I’m just missing a little more complexity on the palate. But as they say, ‘it does what it says on the tin.’ 87 points - whiskyfun.com -

In the 20's this blend was created for ocean liners, the decanter / bottle being designed with a rounded bottom, so that it will never tip over - just swing. A boon for the barmen who had to endure rough seas and shelf balance and a testimony to Sir Alexander Walker's ingenuity. Swing virtually disappeared for several decades to be recently re-launched as a super-premium blend. Its distribution remains largely confined to duty-free markets. We have imported a small quantity for whisky lovers to experience what is reputedly one of the smoothest, silkiest blended Scotch whiskies on the market today. 40% Alc./Vol. -

In Italian, chiave = feminine. That's your first hint about this little beauty of a sangiovese. In music, chiave is the key that forms the tonal basis of a piece of music. That's your second hint. Undeniably gentle and expressive, with a tannin pulse that won't stop, La Chiave takes sangiovese to the next level. Cherry, dried cranberry, licorice, tilled soil, briar, dried herbs and an enduring marzipan savouriness tied neatly – and taut – in complex tannins. Drink by 2033.

At the heart of the project are low-yielding 1912 and 1951 Barossa Valley Shiraz vines planted adjacent to the locally-known Atze's Corner, in an unassuming plot of land to the east of Nuriootpa on the valley floor. Fruit is also sourced from several other vineyards, also owned by the Kalleske family. Two of the Barossa Valley's prized sub regions make up 100% of the Shiraz in this wine - Ebenezer and Koonunga. Open, small-batch fermentation, hand plunging and pumping and minimal filtering and fining define Andrew's unobtrusive approach. Maturation takes place in a combination of new French oak (20%) with the balance in seasoned French and American oak for a period of 22 months.

Adelaide Hills Shiraz is a hot-ticket at the moment and here is a wine that sits very comfortably in the pocket of the emergence of a regional style. It’s satisfyingly ripe, crimson plum and berry to the fore, plump, with a little lift of pepper. Its signature, more importantly, is a palate shape that feels circular and continuous, with a sense of generosity that fills the mouth without weight, thickness or oak overburden. A wine with purity of flavour and structure that offers a complete new-age Shiraz experience.

The 2022 Plexus comprises 43% Shiraz, 41% Grenache and 16% Mourvèdre (a.k.a. Mataro). This is the most Grenache that has ever been included in the Plexus, and 2022 was a beautiful season for that variety. "It's always an SGM," says winemaker John Duval. "The Shiraz helps it age in the cellar." On the nose, you get black fruits and exotic spice, layers of forest berries and brine. On the palate, the wine is sweetly fruited and brilliantly fresh. It has an earthy textural bedrock presumably from the Mataro, which grounds the fruit. The tannins are a highlight here. There are some very old vineyards that add to this cuvee, four at over 100 years old, and perhaps these assist with the tannic complexity. A portion of the fruit is from the Hoffmann Vineyard: Shiraz Dallwitz block, Church Block Mataro and 65-year-old dry-grown Grenache. This is a sensational release. Really good. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2037.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateThis year's Plexus release sees a blend of shiraz (43%), grenache (41%) and mourvèdre (16%) from across a number of the parishes of the Barossa. Lovely dark plum and boysenberry fruits with hints of cherry clafoutis, dark chocolate, roasting meats, clover blossom, softly spoken cedar and vanillin and earth. Supple and pure with fine gravelly tannins and a minerally cadence showing plum, spice and mocha tones at the tail. Drink by 2035.

Ripe plum and dried citrus notes in the form of oranges on the nose follow through to a full body with juicy fruit and a creamy and rather chewy aftertaste. This 2017 shows some balance and focus for the vintage, considering the hot growing conditions. Try after 2023.

JamesSuckling.comThe San Polo 2017 Brunello di Montalcino (made with organic fruit) opens to a really fun and unique bouquet. I found aromas of dried herb, oregano and wild licorice, which I don't find in other wines from this vintage. There is also a pretty floral component that actually outpaces those characteristic aromas of cherry and redcurrant that you always get with Sangiovese. This wine has that extra layer of balsam intensity that sets it apart in a crowd. Production is 28,600 bottles. Drink 2023-2035.
