Terrifically concentrated and texturally voluminous yet tense and dry with an exceptionally long zesty finish.
From a single vineyard planted in 1975. Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of lime, citrus and orange rind flood the nostrils followed by some chalky talc, green apple and slatey mineral notes. The mouth watering palate is bristling with lime, citrus and orange rind fruits which are both terrifically concentrated and texturally voluminous. Chalky talc, wet steel and flinty mineral elements express themselves across the back half. Tense and dry it has a spine of crisp, laser edged acidity which leans into the long zesty finish that shows exceptional drive.

The 2025 Block 2 Riesling is softer and plusher than the Block 1 Riesling tasted next to it, and this shows in lime flesh, brine, green apple and crushed rocks. The Rieslings of the Great Southern carry the mineral drive of those from Eden Valley and, in some cases, the flesh of Clare, which we see here. This region in the southwest of Western Australia is quite unique in Australia in that it is incredibly remote, almost harsh in its landscape, vast and diverse, given its size. The soils around the Mt. Barker area are largely composed of ironstone gravel soils and lateritic gravelly sandy loams derived from granite and gneissic bedrocks. These soils are particularly well-suited to Shiraz and Riesling, which we can see here. This is a magnificent wine, and while I often prefer the Block 1 over the Block 2, it is not so this year. Is there a touch of residual here? If so, I like it. The vineyard block was planted in 1975. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2046.

So even, flowing, deeply flavoursome. A pleasing and generous style of riesling, unashamed of its origins and feeling pure and natural as it goes. Delicious. Serious. Complex. Drink by 2035.

Produced by Fogarty Wine Group, owners of Deep Woods Estate and Dalwhinnie to name a few, this would have to be one of the best value Pinots coming out of Tasmania.
Rich, supple and powerful this is one super moreish Tassie Pinot.
Semi translucent red to dark red core with black shaded edges and a vibrant light red hue. Wonderfully fragrant aromas of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and anise impress with their intensity. Some bramble, rhubarb, forest floor and spicy cedar notes are also evident. Rich and juicy, the palate is engulfed with spicy dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours. Supple and polished with silky smooth tannins, subtle brambly rhubarb, dried herb and forest floor characteristics lend further interest. Boasting an excellent power wave it has a long, expansive finish that’s super moreish.

The 2025 Le Stagiaire Chardonnay draws on fruit from Merricks (35%), Balnarring (25%), Merricks North (30%) and Tuerong (10%). Sorted in the vineyard and winery before being pressed as whole bunches to 500-litre puncheons, this wine is wild fermented with no temperature control, followed by seven months on lees to slowly enrich the texture. A couple of barrels went through malolactic, and the nicely integrated new oak component stands at 10%.
A rich, generously flavoured Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay with a beautifully rounded feel.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green tinted edges and a watery hue. Elevated aromas of white peach, nectarine and dried honey are complimented by some cashew, biscuity nougat and spice notes. Mid weighted, the palate features ample richness and a mildly creamy textural feel with fleshy white peach and nectarine fruits to the fore. Cashew, subtle dried honey, biscuity nougat and spice elements sit underneath. Fresh and balanced it finishes long and generous with a beautifully rounded feel.

This is juicy and flavoursome. Nectarine, pink grapefruit, a lightly salty and spicy preserved lemon thing. It has a pulpy citrus flavour mixed with stone fruit, a little creamy and nutty, some flinty bits, with a seaside saline and citrus finish of excellent length. It’s such a tasty Chardonnay. Everything is in the right place. Drink 2025-2032.

Great value, great wine. A lovely balance of citrus and white nectarine with ginger flower and a neat tug of phenolics. The palate is neatly composed, with a flutter of light lees and juicy acidity. Up there as one of my go-to drinks because everything about it is just right. Drink by 2032.

A rich, textural Pinot Gris that’s terrifically concentrated and boasts a long voluminous finish.
The fruit for this excellent fuller styled Pinot Gris is sourced from 28-year-old, northeast-facing vines rooted in the signature grey loam and red ferrosols soils of Merricks. The majority of the fruit is pressed as bunches to old puncheons with full solids and kept on lees, while a small portion of the blend (10%) ferments carbonically for three weeks.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Pronounced aromas of ripe pear, baked apple and honeycomb are trailed by some quince and cinnamon notes. Rich and textural, the palate is engulfed with mouth filling ripe pear, baked apple, quince, honeycomb, musk and cinnamon spice flavours. Boasting terrific concentration, it has a line of fresh underlying acidity and a long voluminous finish.

Exotic, rich and lusciously textured with a long spicy finish.
From a small parcel of 30-year-old vines in located Tuerong, half the fruit is fermented as whole bunches for three weeks, where winemaker Barney Flanders looks to build mouthfeel rather than relying on high levels of ripeness on the vine: “The carbonic element ramps up the perfume and the texture.” The remaining half is pressed as bunches for fermentation in seasoned wood, and the whole matured for seven months in a single puncheon on its lees.
Brilliant water like core with gleaming green tinted edges. Rosewater, lychee, Turkish delight, musk and spicy ginger aromas deliver an exotic sniff. Rich, lusciously textured and mouth filling, pear, lychee and Turkish delight flavours engulf the palate. Musk and ginger elements then move across the back half. Brisk acidity with a long finish that’s round, full and spicy.

Sourced from vineyards across the Yarra Valley, 50% from the upper Yarra ranges, this entry level Pinot from Giant Steps was fermented with 32% whole bunch inclusion and matured in French oak (16% new) for a period of 8 months.
Rich, supple and expansive, this is an uber moreish Yarra Valley Pinot.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a vibrant red hue. Fragrant scents of violet, strawberry, red plum and cherry engulf the nostrils with complimenting notes of fresh herbs, subtle forest floor, bramble and spice ensuing. Rich, supple and expansive, the uber moreish palate is layered with dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours. Notions of dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar the undercard. Intensely flavoured and powerful, it has silky smooth tannins and a long, sweeping finish.

An opulent crimson purple. Explodes from the glass with its aromas of ripe cherries, raspberry coulis, lavender and spice. It's just so brightly fruited and juicy on the palate, too. Balanced acidity and tannins complete a superb and well-priced Yarra pinot to drink now and over the next three to four years. As good a Giant Steps entry point as I have tasted. Drink by 2030.

An elite, top-tier producer, famously named the 2025 Halliday Winery of the Year, Giant Steps' focus on single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay has consistently earned them rave reviews for elegance, purity and finesse. That same care and attention to detail has been applied in making an artisanal Vermouth. Hand harvested, certified organic Viognier grapes, whole bunch pressed, wild fermented in French oak and blended with a host of botanicals macerated separately in a distillate of the mother wine (with help of Four Pillars Distillery). Two styles of Vermouth are produced, but the Semi-Dry White is considered the best. Clean, crisp and refreshing, it resonates winemaking skill, being more akin to a structured dry white than many traditional European vermouths. Measured against bar standards like Noilly Prat, it's lighter, more elegant and fresher, accenting notes of lemon and lime zest, thyme and dried apricots, with a cooling character that finishes with a fine-tuned herbal bitterness; gentian, dried orange peel tang and hints of flor sherry. The discount is of the likes we've never seen in its category - and we may never see again. The quality means you can embrace it as a standalone drink, on the rocks with a twist of orange, or use it to create superb Martinis and modern cocktails like a white Negroni, Boulevardier or Aperol Spritz. Just one caveat - Vermouth doesn't last forever, so once opened, remember to stash it in the fridge to maintain maximum freshness. Batch 04/18 tasted.
Other reviews... a very accomplished and unique product in the range of vermouth’s available, and a thoughtful evolution on the original recipe that suits the current vogue for a grown-ups aperitif...The white version I became quite smitten with. Its like summer in a glass. On the nose its a lovely honeycomb aroma (reminded me of a ripe Marsanne wine actually). It is fuller on the palette than its sister, with a dry finish and you get a hint of citrus, a note of light bitterness at the end, very nicely integrated. It is not floral or spicy like Noilly Prat and is more akin to Dolin perhaps in weight + intensity of flavours. This makes a terrific Martini. If you like yours not so astringent, then this is ideal. You don’t need a dash of Orange Bitters and the semi sweetness rounds out of the cocktail and definitely doesn’t dominate several of the gins I tried. I used about 5ml to 10ml to be safe in the 60ml cocktail and that was plenty. Less is more. Highly recommended. - martiniwhisperer.com
Notes from the producers... Vermouth has a long and surreal history, on the fringes of apothecary, art and medicine. This vermouth has small and exacting measures of botanicals, including wormwood, juniper, gentian, bay leaf, Cinchona bark, Seville orange, Meyer lemons, blood orange, green tea, Timor Pepper, Mandarin, native limes, cumquats and orris root (and many more!). Most of the botanicals were grown on our Yarra Valley Vineyards. The medieval treatise ‘Causes & Cures’ recorded the beneficial and restorative powers of all known herbs and spices.

A towering Shiraz that offers a remarkable combination of freshness, power and rich plush fruit.
Amon Ra is Ben Glaetzer’s flagship Shiraz named after an Egyptian God who was considered to be the King of all Gods. According to Ben Glaetzer the key to Amon Ra Shiraz is balancing the fruit and tannin extraction rather the maximising it – “the fruit has such expression that we aim to preserve the characteristics of the vineyard rather than dominate them.” Fruit was sourced from a range of vineyards, aged between 50-130 years old, with a strong emphasis on fruit quality, rather than simply selecting parcels of fruit because they were from old vines. The wine was matured for 16 months in 100% new oak of which 5% was American and 95% French. It was bottled unfiltered.
Impenetrable inky black heart with an equally deep dark red black hue. Freshly crushed ripe blackberry, dark plum and liquorice aromas soar out of the glass trailed by spicy vanillin oak, hints of ripe blueberry, subtle earthy mocha and faint peppered fennel notes. Rich, powerful and incredibly intense, the full bodied palate is tightly packed with opulent blackberry, dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry fruits. Monumental in its stature it has a firm yet beautifully integrated tannin framework. Spicy vanillin oak, traces of mocha, earth and peppered fennel elements lurk beneath. Plush yet remarkably fresh it has an explosive finish that seemingly never ends.

This seriously classy 2022 Amon-Ra is seamless and beautifully pitched with focus and refinement. Yet, it delivers powerful aromas of black licorice, fennel seed, and a core of blackberries dusted with star anise enriched by sweet, balanced oak. Impressive energy with a streamlined shape comes forward before building layers of sweet and savory tones. Chewy, fine tannins punctuate a finish of exceptional length. A stunning young wine that will build in bottle. Drink 2028 - 2045.

I feel that Ben Glaetzer's Amon-Ra is one of the flag bearers for contemporary Barossan shiraz, certainly when it comes to the more powerful, weighty styles. It has a sense of compression. Wildly concentrated black fruits and palate heft, yet it displays freshness and form; supple, lithe and possessed of northern subregional power writ large. There's an imperious tannin structure but the fruit just sucks it all up and charges on. One for the sybaritic indulger of Barossan wine. It's a ripper. Drink by 2043.

The 2022 Amon-Ra Shiraz speaks so clearly of the Glaetzer house style: that is to say, sleek, polished, powerful, seamless and fruit-driven. These are wines that speak of the Barossa in their earthy splay of pliable tannin, but they have a vibrance to the fruit that is most attractive. So, while these wines harness the place—this wine could hardly be from anywhere else—they do it in a restrained kind of way. Not that you could call this 2022 Amon-Ra Shiraz "restrained" and get away with it. More to comment on the fact that Barossa is yoked and controlled in this wine. I like it a lot. There are notes of dark chocolate, black cherries, raspberry pastille and even pomegranate molasses, alongside sweet paprika, ironstone and red earth, roasted meat and a throw of tapenade. This is really good. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2037.

A wine that speaks with passion about its Barossa heritage. Generously full-flavoured with masses of concentrated dark fruit delivered with layered richness. The small crop from a reasonably challenging vintage produced fruit with the concentration and balance to create a wine like this. It’s opulent, yes, but there is an effortless stylishness that elevates it into another zone. Licorice and blackberry notes with plush dark plum and a lift of spice all play their roles. Fine chalky tannins and plenty of balanced oak add the final touch to a very good wine with staying power. Drink 2025-2050.

Billy Walker's attempt to create "the essence of Speyside" is realised in this heavily sherried expression. The first batch quickly sold out in the UK. The current version features a packaging update that debuted around 2024. All the barrels were sourced from Miguel Martin. Slightly more than half were PX puncheons and butts with the remainder being ex-Oloroso. There's also a small addition of 200 litre medium toast virgin oak in the mix, plus some red wine casks. The result is another whisky where the appearance alone will get your appetite going, especially if you're into sherried malts. It pours a fabulous, deep polished mahogany colour and follows through with aromas of orange zest, raisin cake and fruit’n'nut dark chocolate while offering a decent attack at just 46%. Revealing more zesty freshness, gingery warmth and less of the over-the-top opulence of many recent Glenallachies, the flavour ledger tilts towards oloroso here with an almost tart, peel character competing with the PX. Dates, raisins, roasted nuts and an interesting twist of liquorice carry the aftertaste. All up, a solid sherried addition to the distillery’s ever-expanding stable that fares best after 5-10 minutes air contact. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

As a blender for over forty years, the warehouses are where Billy Walker really comes in to his own. Working with casks dating back to the 1970s, he's created an updated expression of the pinnacle core range offering, marked by a new presentation and a slightly different oak regime: x-bourbon maturation followed by a lengthy spell in oloroso casks. Despite that, it's hardly a sherry bomb, however the style here is more settled and integrated than the younger bottlings, and just gets better and better with time in the glass. A delicious rush of fruity malt (dried pear, apple, vanilla) comes rounded off by crisp oak and orange zest; the balance is outstanding, making this easily the most accessible and elegant whisky in the current line up. That said, if you prefer your Glenallachie on the wild side, stick with the cask strength or even the 12YO. Leave this for the grown ups. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

[c.2024 tasting] ...The label proudly states it’s ‘overflowing with their signature heather honey charm’, which does sound a bit Highland Park-esque, doesn’t it? We weren’t particularly fond of the ‘previous new 18’ about six years ago, but as DJT would say, some stuff must have been fixed, very much so. Colour: dark amber with reddish hues. Nose: prune juice, plum wine, figs, milk chocolate, PX sherry, molasses, peonies, jasmine, and spearmint. That said, it’s far from heavy or overbearing. Mouth: absolutely nothing like that former 18-year-old. We do quickly arrive at notes of aged wood, deeply steeped black tea, rocket leaves, and dark tobacco. There is a drying quality, but it stays within pleasant bounds. Hints of cold espresso. Finish: sherry that behaves itself, alongside orange marmalade with pepper, cinnamon, and ginger. Comments: not my favourite of the range so far, but there’s no denying it’s very well-crafted. It has a touch of that old M style, just before FO arrived, if that rings a bell. Famous as one of Speyside’s most masculine whiskies, Glenfarclas 15 is matured in 60% x-Sherry casks, with the remainder x-Bourbon, but with a difference. The latter barrels are shaved back in order to minimise their flavour input, putting the focus almost completely on the sherry. Bottled at 46%, the result is one of most full-bodied in the Glenfarclas stable. It's also one that tasters tend to notice the most batch variation in. Re-tasted in early 2022, the latest bottling takes some time to develop and blow off minor sulphur blemishes. Aromas pick up speed, echoed in attractively sherried flavours of raisin cake, fruit mince pie and digestif biscuits. The finish adds suggestions of pickled ginger and baking spices. Though not long, the flavours are surprisingly intense, well-proportioned and approachable without dilution. Give a freshly opened bottle thirty minutes to begin to show its best. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Some classic sherried Speysider that everyone should have tried. WF 84 last time I had, but that was in… 2006 (feeling shame here at WF Towers). Colour: gold. Nose: not that different from the 10, just cake-ier, more sherried, and rather more complex, with small herbs, a mossy side, and a large chocolate cake. Touches of yeasty porridge in the background. Fresh pumpernickel bread. Mouth: really very cake-y, malty, with raisins and some very lovely touches of spearmint. I’m also finding a delicate wood smoke, as well as the usual walnuts when we’re having a sherried malt such as this one. Goody good. Finish: rather long, and shall I dare mention Christmas cakes? With the Edrington group having priced extra-aged Macallans well beyond the reach of the average wallet, (pay $4000+ for the 25YO) Sherry enthusiasts searching for that something special have few options left. Enter Glenfarclas: When you buy a bottle of this you support one of Scotland's only independent family-owned distilleries.
Quarter-century aged Scotch is not getting cheaper. Arran, Dalwhinnie, Glenfiddich, Highland Park, Old Pulteney, Laphroaig, Talisker, Caol Ila, Glenrothes and Glengoyne currently have an average retail price of close to $700. Add Macallan, Lagavulin, Springbank and Ardbeg to the mix and the average jumps up to around $1200! It's inevitable that the price for 25 year old single malt Scotch will settle somewhere between these two values. (Even Single Grains and Blends with similar age statements are becoming less and less accessible).
Tasting note: Bright gold with a pale straw hue. Some real class and depth to the nose which offers powerful aromas of prune, roasted nuts, honey and freshly polished floorboards. Smells expensive. Mouthfilling, and with an unexpected degree of 'tingle' for whisky of this age. Glorious at mid palate, serving up delicious honey and dried fruit flavours over rich, spicy, sugar-laced malt. Medium long with a delicate aftertaste of dried fruit and sweet leather. Aristocratic. Would make a perfect after dinner malt. Some tasters drew comparisons with Macallan 18. 43% Alc./Vol.

We’ve always been impressed with the skewed sense of value to be found in what is perhaps one of Speyside's most underrated distilleries - Glenfarclas. Like much of their range, the 17 year old is 100% Oloroso matured, however the distillery curates first-fill and refill barrels to create contrasting profiles and differentiate the various age statements. The style of the 17 year old suggests more second or third fill casks, so there's less overt sherry impact, and a softer texture with more finesse - especially compared to the relatively brawny 15 year old. The nose opens with beautifully integrated aromas of honey, stewed pear, beeswax and fresh, pure malt, the second pass finding hints of bounty bar and cigar box. Firm and full bodied, the delivery is buttery, almost oily, with more orchard fruitiness and spice entering (almost like apple danish and cinnamon). The balance is notable, rounding off with late barley sugar and fine, drying tannins, ending as appealingly as it began. 15-17 years is clearly a tipping point for the distillery, which perhaps explains why Glenfarclas persist with this unusual age statement. 43% Alc./Vol.

Now seen as the value for money alternative to Springbank, Kilkerran 8YO has quickly gained a reputation as a punchy, elemental Campbeltown bomb. Previous batches included full maturations in Bourbon, Port and Sherry. Batch No.12 comes 100% matured in Bourbon barrels, resulting in a creamier mouthfeel with hints of tropical fruit and low to medium peat. A few drops of water are recommended, while some tasters note that the rough edges common to young Kilkerrans blow off after the bottle has been opened for a few weeks. No details on the numbers released, but as usual, stocks are allocated in Australia. 57.7% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... A top-class whisky that will certainly be among the highlights of this year's ex-bourbon cask maturation. In my opinion, a few drops of water are very good for the whisky right from the start....This Kilkerran is also a very successful single malt in the mouth, even if the taste cannot keep up with the brutally strong nose. The dominant flavors for me are pear and banana. With a little more water, the papaya flavor also reappears. Additionally, there's a hard-to-describe aroma that I associate with Kilkerran. Furthermore, the alcohol becomes somewhat more noticeable again, even with just a few drops of water. Notes from the producers... Nose: Notes of butterscotch and custard creams lead, with apple butter and white miso. Cream sponge and poached pear sweetness follows. Palate: There is a creaminess on the palate in notes of shortbread crust and smooth caramel chocolate, with notes of gooseberries, white grapes, cigar box smoke and sandalwood developing. Finish: Hints of green peppercorn and honeydew melon emerge in the finish, alongside an ashy note.

The lowlands whiskies of Scotland in many respects reflect the landscape they are produced in. The countryside is certainly not without natural beauty, however it lacks the dramatic and rugged contrasts of the Highland and Island regions. Lowland whiskies consequently are generally used as background material for blends and have historically been unappreciated (or at least largely neglected) by malt enthusiasts. Nevertheless, it would be a mistake to belittle the Lowlands. Their whiskies offer a refreshing contrast to the heavier, peatier malts of the north with Rosebank and Glenkinchie being two outstanding examples.
First offered in 2007, this official Glenkinchie is generally considered a leap in quality from its previous incarnation as a ten year old. Without a particularly strong flavour profile, the style is light, floral and fruity, with hints of cut grass. There's nothing that stands out, but also nothing that's unpleasant. Jim Murray remarks in his 2025/26 Whisky Bible that, "...there is a fabulous vibrancy to this which nearly all of the bottllings I have tasted in the last few years have sadly lacked. Readers may remember the high standard set by the original 16-year-old Glenlivet Nadurra, discontinued around 2015 due to shortages of older maturing stock. It was replaced by a range of no-age-statement (NAS) cask-strength bottlings including Oloroso Matured, Peated Cask Finish and this First Fill American Oak expression. Thankfully, the follow-ons maintained the quality of the original. In particular, if you enjoyed Nadurra 16YO, you can be pretty confident here as the wood regime is the same. Matured entirely in x-Bourbon casks, 'First Fill' typifies the distillery's style offering up deep scents of poached pear and ripe green apple over beeswax and vanilla. The orchard fruit theme continues in the second pass adding milk chocolate, orange cake, light pepper and clove. A precocious sniff! The palate builds with flavours of honey, vanilla and tea biscuits; quite spicy and concentrated, thinning out momentarily before a stewed pear sweetness almost breaks through the spicy oak, carrying the aftertaste in rebounds. A little water helps it along but it's fine to drink uncut. As one of the more engaging Glenlivets of recent years, this release serves as a reminder that NAS whisky isn't necessarily retrograde. 59.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Batch FF0117 tasted.

The French Oak Reserve is generally considered one of the better values in the Glenlivet stable. Jim Murray certainly thinks so, giving this mid-range malt a strong recommendation - and he's not the only one. The distillery was one of Scotland's first to employ French oak for ageing whisky. Specifically, Limousin oak, sourced from France’s Dordogne region, the only French forest that is predominantly Quercus Robur. The toughness and coarse (open) grain of the species is a result of nutrient-deficient soils, restricting vertical growth to shorter, wider trunks. It places Limousin oak at one end of the scale in terms of looseness of grain. A consequence is that the release of flavours is aggressive and more oak tannin is extracted than from other oak types, hence, it's used almost exclusively for the maturation of spirits like Cognac rather than wine. In the case of Glenlivet, the whisky is selectively finished in Limousin oak so as not to overpower the fruitiness of the distillate. The wood's low density allows the spirit to cycle deeply in and out of the staves, adding a distinctive and pleasing spiciness that's different to the vanilla-heavy American oak. Bottled at 40%, Glenlivet's French Oak Reserve is not a heavy malt, but at the right price, you do get a terrific everyday drinker.

The expression is said to be a favourite of Glenmorangie's Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden. There are aromas of honey, vanilla, narcissus and jasmine, and tastes of figs, dates, nuts, gentle spices and more. A light furniture polish note adds a level of austerity to the experience. A gentle beefiness endures here, some of that rye-driven greenery evoking rosemary and thyme. The raw materials used to create this whisky are quite unusual and include estate grown Cadboll malt along with chocolate malt (chocolate malt is usually used in the production of beers like porter and stout). The whisky has been matured in new, low toast, Ozark American oak casks and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. It is the brainchild of Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's head distiller who first had the idea over 20 years ago.
Retasted June 2017... Brilliant topaz / beams from the glass. Almost floral notes of cocoa and manuka honey drizzled over hints of orange spice cake and shortbread. Starts understated and fresh but finishes unlike almost any other whisky: A peacock's tail of fantastic length and force with miniature detonations of orange zest, dark chocolate, hazelnut and sweet spice dappling the tongue. The persistence is quite exceptional. Maintains its place as a high point in the Glenmorangie stable. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

First tasted 2008... Deep orange brown colour with golden hue. Sweet and inviting nose of Mixed Peel, Chocolate, Coffee beans and Almond biscuit. The palate is thick, luscious and mouthfilling, almost creamy. Pronounced flavours of chocolate, coconut, orange, vanilla and hazelnut. The palate shows no sign of spirit heat, even without the addition of water. Outstanding balance. Exceptionally long, supple aftertaste of chocolate, vanilla, almond and hazelnut. Offering superb purity and definition with notes of mixed peel, orange cake and vanilla and a concentrate of citrus peel and mandarin flavours, what's also admirable about this timeless liqueur is its expert balance; the lively spirit backbone and the finish that winds up fresh, mildly tart and vibrant with lingering honeyed-citrus flavours.

Gosh, this is such a good wine. It was a super vintage in Heathcote, and you can see it immediately on the nose with further highlights on the palate. This is not a massively opulent style of wine, but it has tremendous concentration of fruit delivered with such poise and elegance, spicy, savoury dark fruits, a little chocolate, plenty of those plummy riches. And finished with incredible polish with the use of 500-liter French oak puncheons. It seems the 20% whole bunch inclusions have certainly brought that palate into focus. An exceptional wine. The Hennings vineyard is part of a family owned farm that was established by Henning Rathjen in 1858. He was the first to plant vines in the Heathcote region producing wines up until the 1920’s when the vineyard was eventually abandoned. It wasn’t until 1998 when Daryl Rathjen decided to replant the 30 acre vineyard on the same original site that production started again. Winemakers David and Liam Anderson from Wild Duck Creek are in charge of winemaking so its no surprise that the resultant wines are hefty, super rich examples of Heathcote Shiraz. Maturation took place in French oak, 15% of which was new for a period of 18 months.

Compañía de Vinos Heraclio Alfaro is located just a few kilometres away from the village of Alfaro in the east of La Rioja Both the winery and its ﬁrst wine are named after Heraclio Alfaro Fournier, a Spanish aviation pioneer who crossed borders and transcended barriers as both a pilot and a designer of airplanes and engines. In 1914, he was one of the youngest people in the world to earn the oﬃcial pilot’s title, and he made and flew the Alfaro I, the ﬁrst aircraft made entirely in Spain.
This wine is a blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuela fermented in stainless steel tanks before ageing in French oak barrels for 12 months. Fruit is sourced from 2 vineyards located in the Rioja Oriental (East), a warmer and drier part of Rioja. The Garnacha component coming from very old, elevated vineyards located at 700m.

Ranked alongside the classic malts, revered as a spectacular after-dinner drink and without doubt '...a malt to challenge any Cognac or Armagnac', Highland Park's house style is fragrant and floral with a smooth, honeyed character over hints of citrus and smoke. The phenol content of their proprietary malt is 30-40ppm but the remainder which is imported from Simpson's is unpeated. Employing roughly 20% first-fill sherry casks, the distillery is serious about quality oak, spending $20 million a year on wood alone, more than any other Scotch distillery - despite having a fraction of the output of some of the larger brands.
First released in 1979, the 12 year old remains the best introduction to the Orkney legend. A name change and packaging update took place in 2017. It's now called 'Viking Honour', adding to what seems like a never-ending series of Nordic themed labels. This special gift pack edition will please bargain hunters. It comes with a 50ml cask strength HP - a massive, extra smokey limited release bottled at a whopping 64.1% Alc./Vol!
12YO Retasted 2019 ...Surprisingly full at 40% ABV but loses vitality and flattens out towards the finish. Otherwise, mostly unchanged from our first tasting back in 2012. Subtle nashi-pear fruitiness combines with a judicious slap of peat and a spicy flourish. More peaty than some previous bottlings with drying brine, spice and smoke lingering. Closer to the HP style of 15 years ago.

More Viking paraphernalia… Could we at least have Lagertha? Colour: gold. Nose: not my preferred style of HP either, but this is fresher, fruitier, more lively, even if the core is kind of similar. Bitter oranges, marmalade, ginger, ale, whiffs of pumpernickel bread, oak spices, a little leather and tobacco… Indeed I like this nose better. Mouth: no questions, this is more refreshing despite the ‘seasoning’ that’s a little too apparent to me. Pepper, oak spices, black tea, grass smoke… Nice earthy honey beyond these bitterish spices. Finish: medium, spicy, with an obvious tannicity. Comments: they seem to have used active seasoned wood too here, but the spices and the leather were better controlled in my opinion. The best Pinot Gris in Australia is also the best value. That was the line that came to mind when I first tasted this wine. I’d have to go back through my records to see if this wine is actually my favourite Australian gris but fair to say a) that it’s right up there and b) that it’s an absolute ripper. All for 26 bucks. It has a copper-pink blush to its colour, it has genuine mouthfeel and/or texture, it delivers flavour in an easy-going way and yet it’s all straightened up by well-judged acidity. It also runs long through the finish. I don’t rave about gris too often. I’m raving about this one. I even suspect that it will be a better drink again in a year or two.

In the 1950s, the father of current winemaker Paolo de Marchi purchased the adjoining hamlets of Isole and Olena and their estates in the Tuscan commune of Barberino Val d'Elsa. Paolo entered the business in 1976 and the quality of the estate’s wines improved rapidly after decades of sharecropping. Paolo de Marchi is one of the region's kings of the Sangiovese grape and at a time when Chianti was a blended wine it was, he that stepped out to produce wines that were 100% Sangiovese. Cepparello is the true embodiment of a ‘Super Tuscan’ wine and one of Italy's most iconic wines.
Deep dark red black in colour with a dark red hue. The aromatically gorgeous nose is blessed with a kaleidoscope of red to dark currant, dark cherry, red liquorice and violet scents. Dried herb, subtle tobacco, earth and spice notes lend further nuance. Delicious, energetic red to dark cherry, red currant and red liquorice fruits are sculptured by chiselled tannins and lively acidity. In a world of wood-aged spirits distilled from raw materials throughout the year, Armagnac stands out as a product of viticulture, subject to annual growth cycles and variations inherent to 'vintages'. Blending multiple harvests to create a consistent house style remains common, however vintage-dated Armagnacs are another thing - distilled from a single harvest, grapes are moulded by the year’s climatic conditions, partly determining outturn and quality. Vines are cultivated to obtain acidic wines, low in alcohol, resulting in fruity and floral eaux-de-vie. Most vintages are potentially marketable, however it's not a standard practise. Eaux-de-vie from a single year requires particular care and attention. Distillation and ageing must be adapted to capture the individual character of the distillate, and the Cellar Master must decide on the period it should spend in new oak. The minimum is ten years (unlike blends), but if the Armagnac is deemed capable of extended ageing, it might mean 20, 50 or even 100 years in barrel. Thus, with experience and patience, these bottlings can enter the realm of top-tier spirits.
Connoisseurs love Vintage Armagnacs because they have the ability to surprise - or at the very least - deliver more distinctive profiles than a mass blended brandy. Producers classify their diversity into five primary tastes – spices, fruits, bakery, floral, and green – with three different weights, ranging from “fine, light, and easy to drink” to “classic, rich, and well-balanced,” up to the "more powerful and expressive" vintages.
Because they're prominently labelled with the year of production, these gems have become hugely popular as gifts whereby birthdays and anniversaries can be marked by a singular bottle - a way to turn back the clock via a liquid time capsule, rekindle memories and reflect. If you're lucky enough to secure a Vintage Armagnac but aren't ready to open it, store it upright so the alcohol doesn't attack the cork, in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight. Once opened, there's no hurry to finish it. These spirits don't oxidise quickly like a wine or Vintage Port, but they are best consumed within a few years, as recommended by the BNIA (Bureau National Interprofessionnel de l’Armagnac).

Armagnac is France's oldest brandy, recognised since the Middle Ages for its therapeutic properties. It came into its own in the 15th century, with trade peaking in the 1800s. The region's vineyards were subsequently destroyed by phylloxera, only to be replanted at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1909 a decree was issued under the presidency of a local boy, President Fallières, delimiting the region permitted to produce the brandy, finally defining the Armagnac Appellation Contrôlée and its three regions in 1936.
At Janneau, the oldest of the great Armagnac houses, the spirit is distilled in two different ways: "Armagnacais" (single, continuous distillation) and "Double Distillation" which involves pot stills. In the latter, wine flows from a vat to the first still acting as the cooling agent and allowing the vapours to condense. This first product is called "brouillis" and is distilled again, however the liquid at the very beginning and end of the process (called the "head & tail") is left out as it contains some impurities. Only the heart – that part which achieves the desired quality – is kept. The freshly distilled Armagnac is clear, decidedly fruity with occasional plum, green apple and vanilla notes.
The XO is the brand's flagship expression, blending Baco and Ugni Blanc eaux-de-vie from Bas-Armagnac and Ténarèze. While the youngest liquid in the composition is ten years old, others have been resting in oak for more than three decades. Expect aromas of candied plum, reine-claude plum, oak and red fruits and intense but well-balanced flavours hinting at oak, quince and sour cherries with a spicy finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

The fruit for this Shiraz is sourced from Kalleske’s certified organic Moppa vineyard with grapes coming from ten different blocks, the oldest of which was planted in 1961. Troy Kalleske reports that the 2024 growing season was near-perfect delivering average yields and superb quality fruit.
Small dollops of Petit Verdot and Viognier were included in the blend to provide added complexity and give the wine a contemporary edge. Maturation took place in a combination of approximately 20% new French, American and Hungarian oak hogsheads for 12 months.

Kalleske’s Greenock Shiraz is a single vineyard wine produced from low yielding vines on the Kalleske estate at Greenock, in the North-Western Barossa Valley. Cuttings for these vines originate from a vineyard planted on the property in the late 1800’s. It’s certified both organic and biodynamic with maturation taking place in a mix of 30% new American and French oak hogsheads for a period of 19 months.

King Car distillery was only brought on stream in 2005, but the sub-tropical climate means their whisky matures quickly, demonstrated by the 'Classic' NAS Kavalan winning Gold at the 2011 International Wine & Spirits Competition. Since then, it's cemented a reputation as one of the best value Asian malts on the market. The aromas are expressive with stewed pear / ripe stone fruit, cocoa and vanilla laced malt, rounded off with what seems like a dose of peat. There's a pleasant lightness to the palate, which, at the same time, doesn't lack concentration. Semi sweet cereal flavours and gentle spices feature in a well-balanced profile that's overall remarkably Speyside-like, ending mildy fruity, fresh and dry. Notes on Kilchoman Batch Strength...
Kilchoman's first ever core range batch strength release is drawn from a combination of re-charred red wine casks married with Oloroso Sherry butts and Bourbon barrels. The result is a colossal dram combining the natural peat smoke and citrus character of Kilchoman with dark fruits, rich spices and sweet caramel. Technically it's not cask strength but it's not far off. A few drops of distillery spring water were added to bring the ABV down to 57% before bottling without chill filtration. Says Kilchoman's Founder Anthony Wills “Batch Strength is a giant of a dram, it has a raw intensity, that I love. But importantly, that power is balanced by a delicacy and finesse that speaks for the quality of our production processes in the stillhouse, and also the quality of casks used for maturation". If you've been waiting for a release that embodies Kilchoman’s robust, maritime character, in particular a Kilchoman with a strong salty bite, this is it.

This recipe uses Kilchoman matured in bourbon barrels, oloroso butts, and re-charred red wine casks, and combines the fruit and smoke really well. Red apple, red currant, black raspberry, heather honey, and salted caramel on the nose, with beach bonfire smoke turning peaty as it builds in intensity. This dram is delicious – the proof’s in the pudding, or to put it more plainly, in the remaining liquid level in the bottle, which is dropping at an alarming rate. So much so that I’d hedge my bets that when it’s finished, I’ll be planning to replace it fairly quickly, if the price is right. And price is the slight kicker here – there has to be at least one right? Retailing at around £75, it is rather higher priced than I’d have hoped, particularly taking into account that it is not in fact officially a cask strength bottling, although to all intents and purposes it drinks like one. Neither is it age-stated. So I’ll be keeping a close eye on any offers when it comes to replacing mine. Score wise I should be docking a point and giving this a 7 out of 10 Dramface rating based on the slightly high suggested retail price. However, I need to recognise how quickly I’m tearing through it. I’m loving this. It’s an 8. Would I recommend it? Yes wholeheartedly. Elements of Islay Cask Edit is part of the new core range trilogy alongside Sherry Cask and Bourbon Cask. It's a composition of refill, bourbon and sherry casks bottled at 46% for the perfect balance of drinkability and personality. Two big names are involved - Laphroaig and Caol Ila with liquid aged from seven to twelve years old. The combination of rich, smoky single malt from Islay’s south coast married together with a fresher, fruitier style from the north makes for perfect winter dramming.
Other reviews... The 46% ABV strength is perfect for an easy-drinking but richly flavoured experience. The sherry casks are not over-bearing, providing some delicate nuances under these well-matured bourbon malts. I’m having a hard time putting this bottle down and I would wager that you would as well. If you like peated whiskies, and balanced ones at that, then this should be sitting on your shelf. I’m very much intrigued to get my hands on the Bourbon cask and Sherry cask releases from Elements of Islay now. Well played Elements of Islay team.... Lagavulin, pronounced 'Lagga-voolin' (meaning 'the hollow where the mill is') is distinctive and powerful. Once described as 'liquid bandaid' for its strong medicinal character, it is perhaps the most assertive, complex and intensely dry of all the Islay malts. The palate overwhelms like an ocean wave with powerful peaty, salty overtones that re-emerge on the finish. The taste sensation lingers long in the mouth. On a cold wet winters night, there is perhaps no finer tonic than a dram of Lagavulin.

More about the Distillery... Lagavulin legitimately claims to being one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Situated in a small bay near the south coast of Islay, Lagavulin stands near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle. From here 1,000 Islaymen set sail to fight alongside Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314, and in this bay the Macdonalds maintained their power base as Lords of the Isles until finally driven out by the Campbells three centuries later. Distilling on the site is thought to date from as early as 1742. In the late 1700s it is believed that there were up to ten illicit stills operating in the district. The Lagavulin distillery officially became legal in 1816 and by the 1830s only two distilleries remained in the bay. In 1837 these distilleries unified under the Lagavulin title, coming under the ownership of the Graham brothers and James Logan Mackie. By 1875 the distillery was producing 75,000 gallons of whisky annually. The distillery's water is sourced from a nearby stream. The maturation warehouses are by the sea and when the seas are high, Lagavulin's outer walls are knee-high in salt water. Lagavulin uses Larch wood washbacks and individual onion-shaped stills with unique steep swan-necked lye pipes which the distillers claim profoundly affect the taste and refuse to change in any way.
