Pokeno Origin Single Malt New Zealand Whisky (700ml)NEW ZEALAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 43%The New Zealand scene has gone from just one distillery that closed in 1997 (Willowbank in Dunedin) to over ten small-scale and craft distillers. One new venture, nestled amongst the volcanic mountains and misty valleys of the Waikato region is a family-owned and operated passion project aiming to distill in the style of the finest Speyside malts. And with decades of whisky industry experience, Matthew Johns, who has been associated with some of the biggest names in the world of single malts has Pokeno right on track. Founded in 2017, it is already the largest single malt distillery in the country, handling all aspects of production on-site, including maturation and bottling. It even has its own cooperage. According to some tasters, what's coming out of barrel now resembles Japanese whisky, showing more delicacy than most Scotch, and zero peat. Four whiskies make up the current range. 'Origin' comes aged in ex-bourbon casks, making for a pure, light, breezy, well-rounded whisky with hints of honey drizzled fruits (think dried pear or cantaloupe), followed by suggestions of honey, cream and coconut chocolate through the medium-long finish. 43% Alc./vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... A nose of cereal bars, honey, flatbread crackers, peppercorn, cinnamon, shelled almonds, and dried grasses. It’s rounded, with good weight and texture, delivering honey, vanilla, apricot, light citrus, fudge, peppercorn, cinnamon, and oak char, with an actively spicy finish. Well-made and a great introductory malt, but this flavor profile positions it in pretty crowded territory, up against numerous similar-tasting bourbon cask-matured single malts. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...most impressive is the cleanliness of the malt; this has been beautifully and carefully made. 92.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024
...Matured in first-fill bourbon barrels. No age statements. A refreshing single malt, it could easily pass for a bourbon barrel-aged Scotch. Light, buttery grains and a pinch of citrus are evident on the fresh nose, and the same follow through on the palate. Almost coming across like a shortbread cookie, the creamy whisky showcases a slightly nutty character that evokes nougat, almond butter, coconut, and again some lemon extract, filtering into the finish. Bright as sunshine, it’s a perfect (if uncomplicated) aperitif. - drinkhacker.com

Puni Nero 3 Year Old Italian Malt Whisky (700ml)ITALY$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 43%Another addition to the Puni range is the limited Release NERO with a total production 3000 bottles. Matured for three years in Pinot Nero casks from South Tyrol, it was bottled non chill filtered. Tasting note: Lean acidic openings almost conceal the underlying brambly/berry aspect. Like this better after air contact which expands and softens the bouquet, adding nuances of plum and fruit'n'nut chocolate. Dryish, linear entry. Mid palate finds flashes of juicy malt, spiced plum, pepper and firm oak to finish. Low key aftertaste hints at Turkish Delight? Dried cranberries? References to quality aged grappa. Understated. Would work as an aperitif. 43% Alc./Vol. -

Puni Sole Italian Malt Whisky (700ml)ITALY$134. 99Bottle$1619.88 DozenABV: 46%Created from a blend of three malted grains: a barley base enriched with the addition of locally grown rye and wheat. This differs from previous Puni releases being matured for two years in first-fill Bourbon barrels, then finished for another two years in x Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks from Spain. "Sole" means "sun" in Italian, referencing the Sherry production process whereby PX grapes are dried under the sun, concentrating their sugars. The wine from these grapes is then barrel aged for many years via a method known as a Solera. Tasting note: [Batch 1 tasted] Brilliant gold. Dry and spicy, then almost floral-soft, the aromas hinting of dates, prunes, drinking chocolate and pepper with emerging fruitiness. Very attractive. Follows through with vibrant, semi-sweet, flavours offering suggestions of dates and bitter dark chocolate framed by warming spice. Concludes sweet but balanced with the PX input more salient through the final stages. 46% Alc./Vol. -

Puni Alba 3 Year Old Italian Malt Whisky (700ml)ITALY$160. 00Bottle$1920.00 DozenABV: 43%A barley / grain / wheat mash whisky matured for three years in Marsala casks from Sicily and finished in hand selected casks from the Isle of Islay. Alba is the Italian word for 'dawn', as well as the Scottish Gaelic name for 'Scotland'. Tasting note: Much deeper in colour than the "Nova", this pours deep bright gold and offers unusual, drier styled, aromas of subdued clove, muted vanilla and pencil shavings. Five minutes air contact suggests dried red fruits? Digestif biscuits? Better defined on the palate, where sweet peat flavours are nicely integrated with spicy fruits. Concludes, semi-sweet, medium long with lanolin, white pepper and digestif biscuits hinted in the aftertaste. A well rounded and relaxed peated style. 43% Alc./Vol. -

Puni Nova 3 Year Old Italian Malt Whisky (700ml)ITALY$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 43%A three year old malt matured in both American & European oak. Reportedly, barley aswell as malted rye and malted wheat are used. Tasting note: Almost water like with a pale straw blush. A mildy fruity nose reminiscent of many Speysiders (think Glenlossie, Glencadam, Tomintoul) offering stewed orchard fruits (apple / pear) and light lucerne-like notes freshened up by a touch of peppermint. Follows through with a medium bodied, semi-sweet, fruity / grassy profile with a peppery quality to the spirit and some sharpness to the finish (perhaps the rye coming through?) Could be mistaken for Speyside Scotch in a blind line up. 43% Alc./Vol. Other reviews... Bronze Medal / Other Whiskey Category - 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. -

Rampur Asava Cabernet Sauvignon Finish Single Malt Indian Whisky (700ml)INDIAReduced from $160.00$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 45%Number 7 in the 2021 Top 20 - whiskyadvocate.com
Other reviews... This is the world's first Indian wine cask-finished whisky, produced in the foothills of the Himalayas. Anup Barik, Rampur's master distiller, is in impeccable form here, re-casking mature whisky into Indian cabernet sauvignon barrels and monitoring them judiciously to find the perfect balance. Enticing aromas of damson, black currant, aromatic spices, vanilla essence, and pipe tobacco rise from the glass. The jammy autumnal fruits are immediate and compelling on the palate, developing red cherry, honey, peppery spice, and candied peel notes. Delectable expressions from this nation are flourishing, and with Asava, Rampur has beautifully captured the spirit of Indian whisky. 93 points - whiskyadocate.com
...this is a distillery I first visited over 25 years ago and have held them in high esteem for that amount of time,. Here they have worked exceptionally hard to get the balance between the fruit and oak into as complex a form as possible - and have largely pulled it off. The fifth to tenth flavour waves are borderline perfect. American bourbon barrels and Indian red wine casks. Non chill filtered. 92.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

Rampur Double Cask Single Malt Indian Whisky (700ml)INDIA$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 45%A new Rampur expression, crafted by maturation in x Bourbon barrels & European oak sherry casks. Comes non chill filtered. 45% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... highly unusual for a sherry cask influenced whisky to be remembered for its big chocolate personality. But there you go! Rampur are upping their game considerably... 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022
...Highly charged aromatics, with vanilla pod, butterscotch, dried orchard and tropical fruits, orange peel, and rancio, developing notes of stewed fruit, rubbed mint, and early spring florals in time. A melee of stewed fruit, hard candy, citrus peel, toffee, and caramel on the palate, with an accompanying rumble of gentle spices and an interjection of lemon and lime. The fruit fades like an ebbing tide, leaving pepper and clove behind.

Rampur Pedro Ximenez Finish Single Malt Indian Whisky (700ml)INDIA$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 45%Tasting note: Rampur began distilling in 2004 debuting their first single malt in 2016. This latest offering sees forty eight stand-out American oak casks transferred to PX sherry butts for a special finishing. The resulting sherry- drenched malt smells of dates, dried apricots and sultanas with a touch of citrus peel. It's medium sweet with good body and a slightly broad mouthfeel, lifted by ginger snaps, raisin spice cake and cinnamon warmth at the finish. Beautifully presented in a corded cloth bag. Non-chill filtered at 45% Alc./Vol. Other reviews... Blender Anup Barik follows up his No. 5 whisky of our Top 20 of 2017 by deploying a Pedro Ximénez sherry-butt finish to the same winning formula. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, tiffin, honeydew, cherry, cinnamon, nutmeg, and hints of vanilla. A mouth-clinging concoction of swirling honeys and caramel, kumquat, redcurrant, banoffee pie, chocolate ganache, and cinnamon, with emerging pepper and clove, highlighting the blender’s enhancement of flavor by the finishing vessel.
91 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick (Winter 2018) A real shame this. It is obvious that the underlying malt is very attractive... Indian distilleries have to learn, like some in Scotland and Ireland refuse to, that using Spanish oak can be a very dangerous game. 86 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021 Notes from the producers... Nose: A flare of sweet spiced aroma evoking the nostalgic notes of toffee, dried fruits and cinnamon; a dash of creamy vanilla and rain forest honey follows. Palate: Rich sweet caramel twirled with layers of spices entices the taste buds to detect winey texture & mouth feel. Finish: Long finish with dried fruits; complementing the vanilla & honey after taste. -

Rampur Single Malt Indian Whisky (700ml)INDIA$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 43%A new arrival from one of the largest distilleries in India and also the country’s oldest, dating back to 1943. Based in the foothills of the Himalayas, Radico Khaitan follow traditional Scottish production methods with the final whisky bottled non-chill filtered. This further cements India’s place as a world class producer. Tasting note: Deep brassy gold. It sounds almost like auto suggestion to find tropical notes and exotic spices in a whisky from India, but that's what you get here: Varnish, then hints of dried tropical fruits and a touch of feijoa in a floral-soft bouquet. 3-4 minutes highlights plush malt, Turkish Delight, cinnamon and vanilla. The unusual aromas are followed in a rounded, semi-sweet delivery suggesting plum, dark chocolate and vanilla, ending clean and fresh. Again, feijoa? Hints of nectarine? Peppers up through the aftertaste. As an introduction to premium Indian whisky, you won't find better. 43% Alc./Vol. Other reviews… The distillery, founded in 1943, lies in Uttar Pradesh in the Himalayan foothills where they have been making whisky for 25 years. Launched in Las Vegas, USA in 2016, this Indian brand is now available in over 20 countries including Canada, UK, France, Sweden, Germany, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore. Rated amongst the Top 20 Whiskies of 2017 at #5 by Whisky Advocate, the team at Rampur have never been in a hurry to launch a Single Malt. The distillery manager comments, "Only once confident of having a very fine product and adequate stock, did we decide to venture into our own Branded Single Malt Whisky. The name was no brainer – it had to be RAMPUR. But a lot of thought went in to the packaging. We wanted to have a simple yet elegant pack. We are very proud of the fact that it is an INDIAN product and we wanted to highlight the Indian origin in our packaging as well. While the product itself says “Indian Single Malt”, there is subtle usage of Devnagari script, Silk pouch with embroidery adds to the Indianess. We are not making any age claim on the product though it is matured for a very long time in harsh Indian weather conditions. (Even Scots admit aging in India is ~ 4 times faster than Scotland!!!) We feel age is just a number and should not cloud the consumer opinion. For us the most important thing is that the consumer should like the liquid and desire to have it repeatedly." -

- 2021 Shinshu Mars Distillery Komagatake x Chichibu Malt Duo Shinshu Aging Blended Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$699. 00Bottle$8388.00 DozenABV: 54%
Japanese whisky lovers have been wowed by the latest 'concept whisky' which began six years ago: A blended malt made by exchanging new make from Mars Whisky (Komagatake) and Venture Whisky (Chichibu), with each matured at the other's distilleries. It's the first initiative of its kind in the Japanese whisky industry.
While Mars Shinshu Distillery in Nagano Prefecture is located high in the mountains where the climate is cold, Chinchibu is in the warmer Saitama Prefecture at a lower altitude. Over six years, the whisky's matured in their respective locations, with progress monitored.
"Getting reports on the maturation status from the other distillery was like hearing about my children growing up in a different city," said Mr Kunai, the Director and Master Blender of Mars Whisky. At the end of the maturation process, which involved using various casks such as a Bourbon, American white oak (new) and a Sherry cask, the whisky was then carefully blended, producing complex flavours with multiple expressions.
Honbo Shuzo announced the joint release at the end of April 2021. Both components were distilled in 2015, exchanged, matured at each distillery's warehouse and then vatted. The concept was started in the hope that the exchange of raw spirits, which is a common practice in Scotland, could be realised in Japan. Bottles are already fetching super premium prices on the secondary market (read AU $1400+). 10,918 bottles are on offer globally. Non chill filtered. Very limited allocation. One bottle per customer.

- 2020 Shinshu Mars Distillery Komagatake Tsunuki Aging Cask Strength Single Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 54%
Last year's Tsunuki aged Komagtake was a Category Winner at the World Whisky Awards. The 2020 release weighs in at a slightly lower ABV, but follows the same process. It was distilled at Shinshu but aged in Kagoshima's tropical climate in barrels held at the Tsunuki distillery. This is the fourth release in the series. Distilled through 2016/2017, matured in both bourbon and sherry barrels and bottled in 2020 at natural strength, it's described as citrusy with candied lemon peel and a hint of peat on the nose, smooth and sweet on the palate with a luscious, slightly smoky finish. Around 5000 bottles are on offer world wide.
Worth following, Tsunuki is a new Mars distillery, located on a historic site in Kagoshima. With this second operation, Shinshu's owner, Hombo Shuzo will continue to expand his portfolio which presently includes the Komagatake single malts, Iwai Tradition, Twin Alps, Tsunagu blended whiskies and the Cosmo labels. Opened in 2016, the heart of the Tsunuki facility is located just next to the family home of the descendant of the founder of the brand (now transformed into a tasting bar and shop). This edition was, as the name suggests, aged in Kagoshima's tropical climate in barrels held at the Tsunuki distillery. According to one report, three types of cask are used - ex-Bourbon American Oak, ex-Sherry European Oak and casks which contained Umeshu, a Japanese liqueur of Ume the Japanese plum.

Other reviews... Nose: Butterscotch, dried pears, dried apples. vanilla, sawdust, nutmeg, peanut brittle, honey, white flower petals. Very expressive. With water some earthiness and light acetone. Palate: Butterscotch, fermented pears, nutmeg, tart pineapple, Honey Smacks Cereal, wood shavings, Hokkaido baked cheese tart crust, crunchy top creme brulee, blackberries. Medium bodied. The exact number of bottles released isn't known, but like its 2018 predecessor, this 2019 limited edtion was likely an outturn of around 10,000 bottles. It's another youthful Komagatake that includes malt whiskies that have spent at least three years in x Bourbon and several other kinds of casks. Like last years, this one's aged entirely at Shinshu. Being the highest elevated distillery in Japan, the temperature variations here can be dramatic. It helps the spirit to cycle in and out of the oak, accelerating the rate of maturation. Official notes say to expect aromas and flavours of "kaki fruit, apricot and orange marmalade followed by sweetened condensed milk, a soft mouthfeel and a clean smooth finish." It comes non-chill filtered and at a slightly higher ABV than many previous Komagatakes. 48% Alc./Vol.

The limited nature of these Tsuniki bottlings is seeing them sell fast. This is the third release, mostly matured in bourbon barrels. Distilled in 2016 and bottled in 2019 at natural strength, it's described as a full-bodied Japanese style with aromas and flavours of ripe apple, citrus fruits, toasted almonds and whipped cream. (Reports suggest this is limited to around 2300 bottles).

Released in October 2018 and limited to around 10,000 bottles, this youthful Komagatake includes malt whiskies that have spent at least three years in either x Bourbon or American oak casks. Unlike some previous releases, this one's aged entirely at Shinshu. Being the highest elevated distillery in Japan, the temperature variations here can be dramatic. It helps the spirit to cycle in and out of the oak, accelerating the rate of maturation. It comes non-chill filtered and at a slightly higher ABV than many previous Komagatakes.
Other reviews... An enjoyable whisky with that's approachable for an entry-level whisky drinker, but still has enough going on to keep everyone entertained. The peat level is right where it needed to be for me. It's absolutely not a mellow whisky though. Highball time! Hopefully more time in the casks will help. - nomunication.jp
- 2019 Shinshu Mars Distillery Komagatake Yakushima Aging Cask Strength Single Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 58%This is the second of Hombo's Shinshu 2015 releases, matured in the company’s maturation halls on the small island of Yakushima. Located off the south of mainland Japan, the island provides a warmer ageing environment. Bottled in 2019, the flavours and aromas include peat, coffee and chocolate brownies with a mouthfeel that's softly bitter, long and warming. Three years maturation in sherry barrels has also bestowed a fabulous colour. Natural strength, so expect a hefty malt. 58% Alc./Vol.

A wine cask finish produced in collaboration with Voyager Estate in the Margaret River wine region in Western Australia. Initially matured in Bourbon barrels for 3.7 years, it was then aged for 11 months in French Troncais oak which previously held Voyager's flagship wine, their 2014 MJW Cabernet. The result is a harmony between the world of whisky and wine: Red wine notes are accented with fruity malt and a delicate balance of toasty oak and peat on the finish. 266 bottles produced. 47% Alc./Vol.
- Shinshu Mars Distillery The Lucky Cat 'May' Blended Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 40%No.4 in a series released by the President of Mars whisky, Mr. Hombo. Each cute cat represents one that was rescued by Mr. Hombo. 'May' follows after The Lucky Cat 'Sun', 'Ash 99' and 'Mint' - all of which sold out soon after release. Reports have it that prices are already escalating for the collection in Japan - if you can find them... Blended and bottled at the Mars Shinshu Distillery, the latest edition was finished in umeshu (plum wine) casks from the Mars Tsunuki distillery. The resulting whisky promises a nose of fresh plum with a nice sweet / dry balance. And of course, the label will please all cat lovers! Other reviews... Nose: Bergamot orange peel, tobacco leaves, and a bit of leather. It soon moves into brown sugar-coated prunes. Palate: Those prunes come front and center right off the bat. Later we get a hint of green apple and blackcurrant, while moving very gradually into vanilla custard. If you're into sweeter Scotch, you'll be right at home. Finish: Some smokiness and oak come through towards the end here. The grain also sticks its head out quite a bit, with lingering corn and oats. 10 minutes later, that tobacco leaf is still around. It may not have a ton of depth but I enjoyed "May." Though not a proper Japanese whisky, the umeshu finish does bring a certain sweet tartness that's hard to find elsewhere. 40% Alc./Vol. - nomunication.jp

Potentially some collector upside. 3830 bottles released. 43% Alc./Vol. Extremely limited stocks.

Kohiganzakura pays tribute to the cherry blossom of the Nagano region with a specially created label by artist, Yoko Nomura. This new whisky (released in 2016) is a blend of slightly peated malts distilled in 2013 at the Shinshu distillery, some of which were aged in ex-Japanese wine barrels, previously used to age the wines of the Yamanashi region. Reportedly there's some 25-30 year old whisky included in the mix (distilled at the old site in Southern Japan). The Shinshu distillery (aka "Mars"), founded in 1985 and in operation from 1985-1992 and then 2011 to present is actually Hombo Shuzo's third domestic distillery. The previous have been the Yamanashi Distillery (1960-1969) and the Mars Kagoshima Distillery (1978-1984). The main single malt brand from the current operation is sold under the 'Komagatake' label, named after a nearby mountain. It's available in a variety of single cask and natural strength expressions.

Very lucky indeed to have secured this Japanese gem, reportedly limited to 1246 bottles and sold via lottery in early 2018. It promises a fascinating mix of casks, blended by Kenji Taniguchi including American white oak barrel #382 (distilled 1986), Sherry cask #327 (distilled 1986), Sherry cask #570 (distilled 1988) and Sherry cask #1068 (distilled 1990). Reportedly more than a touch of peat to this, mingling with the sherry sweetness. Very collectible.Other reviews... A superb Komagatake release for the first part of 2018. The four casks draw an exquisite essence of fruity flavours, some spice and sweetness. To round this off it has a great amount of peat. Kenji Taniguichi has selected amazing casks and blended these to perfection. I was glad to try this at Mars Distillery with Koki-San (Distillery Manager). I appreciated his couple of hours to walk me around Shinshu Distillery and explain to me the many intricacies and exciting facts about Shinshu. - whiskyfacto.com
- Shinshu Mars Distillery Iwai Tradition Wine Cask Finish Blended Japanese Whisky (750ml)JAPAN$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 40%Hombo Shuzo, the company behind Mars Distillery, produces a variety of alcoholic beverages, including wine. So, perhaps not surprisingly, they've employed wine casks from the Chateau Mars winery in neighbouring Yamanashi to finish this blend, ‘Iwai Tradition’, which has spent over a year in x-red wine casks. 40% Alc./Vol. Other reviews... This was the 3rd bottling I tasted at the Hombo Shuzo(Mars) stand at the show. The first 2 were the “Komagatake” 22YO and the “Komagatake” Bourbon Barrel 24YO. After those two, the thought of being knocked out by a 40%abv blended whisky with no age statement finished in a wine cask seemed highly unlikely. Well I was knocked out by the quality of this whisky for the price and so was everyone else I talked to that tried it. Ok, it was only a single dram so it will not be until my bottles arrived that I can confirm, but initial impressions were that this will be right up there with the best value, quality daily drams anywhere in the world. Hmmm, I think I should buy a few more.

Shinshu Mars Distillery Iwai Blended Japanese Whisky (750ml)JAPAN$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%Kiichiro Iwai, the namesake for this Mars Whisky, was for many, the "quiet" pioneer of the Japanese whisky industry. It was Mr. Iwai who built the brand "Hombo Brewing" (Hombo Shuzo) as well as providing the instructions for whisky production there. He was Masataka Taketsuru’s immediate superior at the turn of the century and was responsible for sending Taketsuru (of Nikka fame) to Scotland in 1919 to learn how whisky was produced.
This release is inspired by the great whiskies of America, being produced using a majority of corn balanced with light malt and aged in ex bourbon barrels. Ideal for daily sipping, in a mint julep or an old fashioned. The nose offers hints of spiced pear, then sweeter, richer Bourbonesque aromas of caramel, vanilla and clove. The Bourbon character comes through on the palate too - quite delicate on entry, building with grilled corn and orange zest rounded off with a lovely burst of baking spices and minty freshness which suggest some rye input here - or some very active Bourbon casks - or both. Overall lighter than most Kentucky styles, but a very convincing homage nonetheless. 40% Alc./Vol.

Pale gold. Pure and soft aromas include bubblegum and vanilla in the initial pass. Three minutes air contact accents rich malt, honey and tea biscuits. Slyrs Fifty-One Single Malt German Whisky (700ml)GERMANY$170. 00Bottle$2040.00 DozenABV: 51%Slyrs kick-started when trained brewer and Master Distiller, Florian Stetter went on a study trip to Scotland and noted the similarities with his homeland of Upper Bavaria: mountains, clear water and wonderfully pure air. The first distillations were charged through in 1999 and have received steady critical acclaim.
Other reviews... Slyrs in tip-top form adding creamy dark sugars to their usual concentrated malt. Delicious! 91.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022
...Plenty of intrigue on the nose, with floral top notes, light vanilla fudge, the juiciness of blood orange, pomegranate, and a sprinkling of whole pepper. Syrupy texture with flavors dominated by pears, slowly overcome by the long buildup of spice—pepper, clove, and cinnamon—with a final act of black cherry, black currant jelly, and praline. Dilution provides a shortcut to those fleshy dark fruits. Quite delicious and heartily recommended. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2021
...We're in Bavaria now, let's put on our Lederhosen! This baby was matured for three years in white oak. I absolutely adore this line, 'The team strives for sustainably authentic production and sources its casks from all over the world.' Charming. Colour: gold. Nose: nice fresh bready, with touches of ripe bananas, vanilla, brioche and scones. Soft spices. Some very well mastered 'international' young malt. With water: chicory, heavily malted beer, Stollen. Mouth (neat): very good! Huge progress at Slyrs', really. Last time we visited, that was around ten years ago, they were still toying with pinot noir ;-). Perfect cake-y and bready malt, with soft spices, cinnamon, vanilla… With water: wholegrain bread, drop of Maggi. Finish: medium, a tad spicier, with a little more ginger, but that is normal. Comments: really good. As I said, the style got a little more 'international' (no more lederhosen needed) but let's be honest, it got just much better. That's the dilemma of the future with all these 'world whiskies', no? 83 points - whiskyfun.com

St. Georges Distillery The English Whisky Co. Smokey Single Malt English Whisky (700ml)UNITED KINGDOM$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 43%Part of the core range, this is EWC's peated (45ppm) single malt, offering a lovely waft of smoke on the nose and palate. A novel alternative for the Islay fan. Tasting note: Bright gold. Sweet barley covered in a light blanket of soot. Exposure hints at green cardamom, pineapple pudding and sponge cake. The smokiness subsides releasing orchard fruits (pear / apple). Even better definition after 2-3 minutes. An exotic mezcal-like edge to the delivery. A soft burst of barley, then a rush of oily, creamy peat. The finish is dappled with gently buzzing spices, the aftertaste developing some lovely smoked meat notes. References Kilchoman's finest in its fantastically fresh, pure feel. 43% Alc./Vol. Other reviews… quite a different type of phenol here, sharp and acrid and not dissimilar to that found inside a crisp packet….ridiculously soft delivery. Like their “Original” at 43% this has a curious and not unattractive feel of an old blend about it, the lightness of the body being on stark contrast to the weight of the peat… super complexity as the phenols calm sufficiently for the light tannins and liquorice to make brilliant contrast to the glittering array of dark, toasty sugars; they could have also written “smoky bacon cask”. 93.5 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2017 This lives up to its name with leaf bonfire smoke, vanilla essence, and ginger preserves. Distiller David Fitt chooses malt peated to the same level as Port Ellen maltings delivers to Laphroaig. Assertive flavors of raw ginger, peppercorn, and chili flakes succumb to soothing vanilla cream and herbal notes. It leaves a creaminess on the lips and a mouth-coating finish of bonfire smoke and ground pepper. (480 bottles)

St. Georges Distillery The English Whisky Co. Original Single Malt English Whisky (700ml)UNITED KINGDOM$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 43%A century ago England's distilleries closed their doors due to fierce competition from their northern neighbours and a spike in the popularity of gin. In 2006, two farmers, James Nelstrop and son Andrew began experimenting with excess grain, turning it into new-make. At three years of age, St. George distillery's 'Chapter 5' release became England's first Whisky in over one hundred years. Located about 300 miles from the Scottish border, copper stills and equipment were purchased from Forsyths of Rothes, who have been servicing the whisky industry since the late 1800’s. Legendary Laphroaig distiller, Iain Henderson was tempted away from retirement and commissioned for the initial runs with the first 29 barrels filled in December 2006. Iain finally did retire, but not before he spent four months training David Fitt, a brewer from Greene King to take over. David is now distillery manager. The physical operation is called ‘St. George’s Distillery’, but all the whiskies are marketed under the 'EWC' label. Both unpeated and peated whisky is produced, in conjunction with a rolling program of cask trials that includes x-rum and sherry casks. Pinning down a ‘house style’ is difficult. The company is the most prolific producer of English malt whisky, though by Scotch standards, output is miniscule. The flagship lineup employs a chapter system, with Chapter 5 representing their first-ever whisky release (chapters 1-4 were new make or less than three years old, which legally can’t be called whisky in the U.K.). Some are harder to find than others. Virtually all of them have received rave reviews from the likes of Jim Murray. Early bottlings we tasted back in 2011 were precocious. There are now two core products referred to as "Original" and "Smokey". At the time of writing, EWC’s 11 year olds are the oldest English whiskies made to date. Aged in selected x Bourbon Casks, the 'Original' is completely unpeated with the focus on the quality of the distillate. Tasting note: The beautifully soft nose-feel borders on sublime. Aromas of Marie biscuits, fresh sponge cake and vanilla-laced malt with emerging fruitiness. Equally delightful flavour-wise , the malt landing on the tongue like a pillow; oily, with light orchard fruits; some beeswax and biscuity malt through the aftertaste. Spices build, adding depth. Impeccable sweet-dry balance. Lingering orchard fruitiness. Quite delicious. 43% Alc./Vol. Other reviews… So light. The malt seems distracted by the gently encroaching vanillas with the oils scuppered at this strength the daintier notes have a slight advantage….clean, soft, silky, exceptionally malty and then a surge of salivating gristy sweetness… Norfolk’s finest. Pleasant, hugely enjoyable and friendly. But by EWC standards, pretty basic too. 89 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2017 Malt barns, cornflakes, some sparse vanilla, redskin peanuts, citrus peel, and a dash of white pepper on the nose. The overall impression on the olfactory system is gentle and mild. A tasty prospect, with poached pear, vanilla ice cream, honeydew, peppery spices, ground almond, custard tarts, lemon zest, malt, and peanut brittle. A little tangy citrus, deep warmth, and vanilla to finish. Rather moreish. (480 bottles) 89 points

St. Georges Distillery The English Whisky Co. 7 Year Old Chapter 16 Single Malt English Whisky (700ml)UNITED KINGDOM$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 46%A slight departure here with a smokey PX cask matured release. Showing the deepest colour in the collection, expect aromas and flavours of old books, leather and hints of cigar smoke. Peated to a whopping 60ppm! Non chill filtered. 1178 bottles produced. Other reviews... succulent with equal early emphasis on both fruit and smoke, though the big surprise is the Caol Ila-esque depth of oiliness, which gives, as well as the softest imaginable deliveries, the sugars in particular a much longer shelf life.... Quite superbly vatted: the marriage between smoke and grape is a rare success for the style and there is not a single atom of sulphur to be bought. Truly brilliant! 95 points 46% Alc./Vol.
