British Navy Pussers Rum Trafalgar Bicentenary Porcelain Ships Decanter (1000ml)
Guyana & Trinidad, VIRGIN ISLANDS (BRITISH)
    $399. 00
    Bottle
    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 47.5%

British Navy Pusser’s Rum is expertly blended from some of the world's finest Caribbean rums. Amongst x-seamen, the consensus is that Pusser's is about as close to the authentic British Royal Navy Rum as one can obtain. Spirit connoisseurs claim Pusser's to be more like a fine brandy than a rum, with a full, rich flavour and a rare smoothness - a true sailor's delight! This is essentially a sipping rum, however its unmistakably full, rich flavour will shine through anything you care to mix it with.

Ship's decanters had their beginnings in the early naval sailing ships of the Royal Navy, and it would have been an exception to have found a captain's cabin without one - from the smallest to the largest vessel. This Trafalgar Bicentenary Decanter has been designed especially to commemorate Nelson and his great victory at Trafalgar. A limited edition of 36,000 units has been produced for distribution throughout the world. Each decanter is numbered on its base. The rum for this rare bottling has been aged for 15 years and is considered the finest produced at the Pusser's distillery. Savour and enjoy it.

British Navy Pussers Rum Nelson's Blood Hip Flask (200ml)
Guyana & Trinidad, VIRGIN ISLANDS (BRITISH)
    $44. 99
    Bottle
    $539.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson, Royal Navy, one of the world's greatest fighting admirals, never lost a major battle. At Trafalgar on October 21st, 1805, although outnumbered, he defeated the combined navies of Spain and France. In this fierce battle that would determine who ruled the waves for the century that followed, Nelson sank or captured 19 of the enemy while losing not a single British ship. Unfortunately, at the age of 47, he was mortally wounded and died three hours before the end of the battle with the knowledge that victory was his. For the journey home, his body was carried on board HMS VICTORY, his flagship. Legend has it that to preserve it during the long voyage, they placed him in a large cask of Pusser's Rum. Upon arrival in England, it was discovered that the jack tars (sailors) had drilled a small hole at the base of the cask and drank all the rum - thereby drinking of Nelson's Blood. This term is still widely used today by Navy and history buffs as their alternative name for Pusser's Rum.

This special porcelain flask bottling features traditional Royal Navy toasts on the back of the flask (the same that have been offered for more than 200 years). They are still offered today at dinner on board Royal Navy ships and shore installations. The four flag signal to "Splice the Main-brace", also featured, was flown to signify a double issue of rum. Today, to say to a friend, "Let's splice the main brace!" is akin to saying, "Let's have a drink!".

Other reviews... Deep amber color. Rubber sap, marinated vinegar, caramel taffy, ad brown spice aromas. A round entry leads to a glycerous off-dry medium-to full bodied palate with sherried brown spices, mineral spirits, roasted Brazil nuts, cedar, and toffee. Finishes with a touch of shellac, exotic peppercorn, and very spicy heat. A very hearty, traditional navy rum.

British Navy Pussers Gunpowder Proof Spiced Navy Strength Rum (700ml)
    GUYANA
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 54.5%

Pussers have announced a new release in the form of Gunpowder Proof Spiced Rum. Blended to Admiralty specifications and aged for a minimum of three years in once-used charred oak bourbon barrels, it comes mellowed with a subtle blend of spices. These include banana, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon and a hint of ginger resulting in an incredibly smooth spiced expression with genuine depth and power. Reviews on the blogosphere suggest Pussers is breaking new ground. At a significantly higher ABV, this is guaranteed to pop in mixed drinks and cocktails. Gary Rogalski (CEO of Pussers Rum) comments: “We had an outpouring demand from rum aficionados around the world to “spice-up” liquid history and I believe we have accomplished that goal. We have added a nuance of Caribbean fruits and spices without taking anything away from the blend’s classic Demerara wooden pot still heritage. I believe our customers will find the sensory perception of this rum to be world-class in every respect!” 54.5% Alc./Vol.

British Navy Pussers Rum Yachting Porcelain Ships Decanter (1000ml)

Pusser's, 'the single malt of rum', has recently added a magnificent 'Yachting Decanter' to its popular range of rum-filled ceramics, paying tribute to a magnificent sport which had its beginnings in the 1600’s. Many consider that the first recorded yacht race took place under King Charles II on September 6, 1662 out of Greenwich, England. Since then, modern yachts and rigs have evolved from the heavier, cumbersome vessels of those early days to the sleek, greyhounds of the seas of today.

The major design around the base of the decanter depicts most all of the modern rigs that are sailing today, [see below] including the popular one-design classes. The original art was commissioned by Pusser’s and painted by A. D. Blake of New Zealand, recognized as one of the world’s foremost marine artists.

On the decanter’s shoulder are the names of the current world’s most prestigious yacht races: The America’s Cup, the Transpac, the Volvo Ocean Race, Fastnet, Vendée Globe, Chicago-Mackinac, the Bermuda Race, the Admiral’s Cup and the Sydney to Hobart. Three smaller cameos also adorn the shoulder: Captain Joshua Slocum's 'Spray', Captain Slocum was the first man to sail alone around the world from 1895-1898; the Schooner 'America', winner of the first America's Cup Race on August 22, 1851; the 'Jolie Brise', winner of the first Fastnet Race in 1925.

The large, hand-cast ceramic stopper has a countersunk center with a colorful Pusser's Navy Rum life ring logo. Its facing edges are trimmed in gold, and frame the flag signal for 'Splice the Main Brace!' The Killick's fouled anchor, the official anchor of the Royal Navy, is repeated in gold on the decanter's neck.

Rum and the sea are inseparable, and no rum is more akin to the sea and the sailor than Pusser's Rum–the Original Navy Rum. For more than 300 years, from the earliest days of wooden ships and iron men, sailors of Great Britain's Royal Navy were issued a daily ration–or "tot"–of rum by the ship's "Purser" (corrupted by the sailors to Pusser's). Prior to 1740, the men's daily tot of Pusser's Rum was a pint a day, which they drank neat, that is without water! Before battle, they were issued a double 'tot', and always after victory for a job well done! From 1655 to the 19th century, Pusser's Rum was one of the few daily comforts afforded those early seamen of Britain's Navy as they fought around the globe to keep the Empire intact and its sea lanes open. It was not until July 31st, 1970 that the Admiralty Board abolished the daily issue of Pusser's Rum. "Times had changed", they said as they concluded that "in a highly sophisticated navy no risk for margin or error which might be attributable to rum could be allowed". And so it was that the daily issue of Pusser's Rum, which had stood the test of time as the Navy's longest serving tradition for over 300 years, was cast aside like a piece of flotsam and jetsam where it lay quietly until 1979. In 1979, Charles Tobias–entrepreneur, global sailor, raconteur–sought to resurrect the Pusser's Rum tradition. He obtained the rights and all the blending information from the Admiralty, and formed Pusser's Ltd. on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and began bottling and selling this storied spirit in 1980 to the public for the first time. (Prior to then, it was restricted to the Royal Navy). British Navy Pusser's Rum is the same Admiralty blend of five West Indian rums as issued on board British warships, and it is with the Admiralty's blessing and approval that Pusser's is now available to the consumer.

Today's Pusser's Rum, known as "the single malt of rum" is still produced in exact accordance with the Admiralty's specifications for rum. Unlike most rums, Pusser's uses no flavoring agents. It is 100% natural. In 2001, Pusser's was awarded the "Gold Medal - World's Premier Dark Rum" at the International Wine & Spirits Festival. In 2003, Pusser's Rum won a "Double Gold Medal" at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and a Gold Medal at the same festival in 2005.

This special hand cast porcelain ships decanter is laden with the imagery and symbolism of the Royal Navy. Reproduced in detail, the decanters decorative feautures include: The Admiral Lord Nelson Cameo, The Royal Navy Traditional Toasts Cameo, The Rule Britannia Cameo, the Seven Seas Cameo around the base – even the stopper bears designs and insignas which will be familiar to any navy enthusiast. The Traditional Royal Navy Toasts Cameo can be found on the back of the decanter – (In the early days, up until about 1900, the officers also received rum. In the Ward Room of the Officers Quarters, the daily dinner ritual (at noon) was to toast the reigning monarch, which was then followed by the toast of the day. This ritual is still in effect.) The toasts are:

    Monday: Our ships at sea.
    Tuesday: Our men.
    Wednesday: Ourselves.
Thursday: A bloody war and quick promotion.
Friday: A willing soul and sea room.
Saturday: Sweethearts and wives, may they never meet.
Sunday: Absent friends and those at sea.

A note on Ships Decanters…Ships decanters had their beginnings in the early naval sailing ships of the Royal Navy, and it would have been an exception to have found a captain's cabin without one- from the smallest to the largest vessel. The general shape began to develop sometime in the second half of the 18th century, and nothing much is heard of them until a well known British Admiral by the name of Rodney introduced one at a victory celebration on board his flagship following the famous Moonlight Battle and the Battle of the Saints in 1780 and 1782. His decanters had an especially broad base, some of them up to 12-inches in diameter, to ensure stability when used at sea in wardrooms or officers' cabins. It's said that the true test of a ship's decanter is when the shortest distance from the outer edge of the pouring lip to the edge of the base be equal to or greater than the outer circumference of the pouring lip. This was the "Rodney" test.

This is Bundy's foray into the large white rum category. Crafted by blending white rum with the smoothest aged reserves and matured for four years in first-fill American oak bourbon barrels, it's then charcoal filtered for a smooth & clean finish. Reportedly it has a subtle Bundy taste which makes it something you can drink straight. And while not at the standard of some of the tastier Caribbean rums, it works well as a mixer. Try it in your next Mojito. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Palate: Perfect balance of tropical fruit flavour & spice. Finish: Finishes with hints of vanilla and oak.

Using the ingenuity that Aussies are famous for, the Bundaberg distilling team have created an incredibly smooth rum, using a unique red gum filtration process. The rum goes through a similar double distillation and aging process as standard Bundy UP, but then goes through three separate filtration processes which create an incredibly smooth profile. This process removes some of the stronger flavour compounds which exist in the regular Bundaberg UP, and allows some of the more subtle flavours to shine through.

One in a series of releases from Bundaberg Distillery seemingly in an effort to bridge the gap between rum drinkers, and 'bundy' drinkers. Whilst regular and overproof Bundaberg bottlings charge on proudly unchanged as they have done for over a century, the latest releases have had a much more Caribbean feel to them. This particular bottling extolls the virtues of oak maturation, a process employed by manufacturers of dark rums for centuries.

The brain-fruit of Bundy's noble Master Distillers' Collective, ''Dark Oak'' was inspired by local barrel-baron Dave Schmeider, who handcrafted the original oak barrels used to create this rum. To honour the humble cooper, our master craftsmen filled heavily charred American Oak barrels with some of their richest and most delicious rum reserves.

According to a report in the News Mail, it's been as eagerly anticipated as any release. One Rum lover, "Benjamin Nutley was determined to be the first person to get his hands on the Bundaberg Distilling Company's latest limited edition.

Mr Nutley, 21, said he and three other Bundy locals were camping outside the Bundaberg Rum Bondstore for 25 days to secure their place at the front of the line.

"I just really love my Bundy Rum," he said.

Mr Nutley arrived on Wednesday and said it was his fifth time camping out for a rum launch.

"We have people on call to bring us out food in return for one of the bottles," he said.

Armed with monopoly, puzzles and cards he has plenty of entertainment.

But Mr Nutley said he won't be drinking his bottle. "I've already collected seven so this will be number eight, " he said.

Bundaberg Distilling Company Bondstore branch manager Haydn Jobson said rum fans were sure to enjoy the Barrel House's latest creation. "Dark Oak will be the fourth limited edition bottle to be released from the Bundaberg Master Distillers Collective," he said.

Historical notes: Bundy Select Vat is finally here but was it worth the wait? According to the June 22nd post of the NewsMail, the answer is a resounding "YES!"

"Jason Tomkins spent 11 days camping outside the Bundy Rum Bondstore. And the wait paid off on Saturday, when he became the first person to lay his hands on the Bundaberg Distilling Company's latest special editions release, the Bundaberg Original Select Vat Rum."

"I turned up on (June 13) and I camped there the whole time," Mr Tomkins said. "I've done it a few times. Last year I camped out for three weeks."

Hundreds of people gathered for the launch of the four-year-old rum.

Bundaberg Distilling Company Bondstore manager Haydn Jobson said the unveiling was exciting for the distillery. "Utilising the Distillery's 120 years of rum making expertise, our master craftsman searched through two-year-old original rum reserves and hand selected those that exhibited the right qualities and characteristics," he said. "These premium rum reserves were then double aged for a total of four years in oak vats to produce this product."

The polar bear may seem a curious emblem to originate in Bundaberg, the heart of sunny Queenslands sugar cane country. The designer of the distinctive square Bundaberg bottle believed it was the perfect symbol for a drink that would “ward off the wickedest cold.”

The process followed in the production of Bundy O.P. (and indeed, most rum) is an intersesting one. At the factory in Bundaberg, the sugar cane (a tall, stout, perennial grass, Saccharum officinarum) is cut up and crushed between rollers, and the juice therefrom runs off into tanks. The water in the juice is evaporated and the remainder becomes a syrup which is boiled in a vacuum container. From this operation comes sugar and an uncrystallizable mass of a deep brown colour and treacly appearance, which is molasses. This is fermented and when distilled, rum is the result. At 57.7% alc/vol. Bundy O.P. is indeed perhaps best reserved for medicinal purposes. It delivers a deep, powerful spirit hit that warms the heart and rectifies the throat. Our recommendation: Turn the heater up, wrap yourself in blankets, pour an O.P. and sweat it out!

1988 Cadenheads Green Label GMWE 20 Year Old Grenada Rum (700ml)
    GRENADA
    $240. 00
    Bottle
    $2880.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

312 bottles of this venerable column distilled rum are on offer from Cadenheads, and that's about all that's known. We believe there are only four distilleries on Grenada: Renegade (the new kid on the block since 2021), Westerhall, Rivers Antoine and Clarke’s Court, the last of which was formed in 1937, operating under the umbrella of the Grenada Sugar Factory (the largest on the island), however that doesn't help to narrow it down by much. Cadenhead's notes suggest a decadent experience including flavours of “toffee, peaches in syrup, apricots, white chocolate with cashew nuts, bananas and peppercorns.” Sounds a bit like a very old single grain whisky... 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’. The Biggest Selection of Rums online in Australia. Quality Caribbean rum has as many permutations of aromas, tastes, textures and strengths as any group of wines or spirits. We now have access to many small and large producers who are vying for attention and the very reasonable prices mean rum is not just a passing fad. Aside from the familiar Caribbean island groups, more and more people are becoming aware of a ‘mainland’ rum tradition. Think Nicaragua, Gautemala, Panama or Venezuela. Then there's the rare Rum Agricoles, as well as emerging Australian Rum producers too! Buy Rum online and get it shipped to your door. You can probably tell we're a little 'rum mad'. In fact, Nicks Wine Merchants stock the biggest selection of Rum online in Australia. We also taste and rate many of the rums before you do, meaning we help take the guesswork out of your online purchase.
