    Uncle Val's Botanical Gin (750ml)
    UNITED STATES
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
Distilled five times from grain this small-batch gin is inspired by Zio Valerio’s love of gardening and native Tuscan cuisine. The botanicals are not only Uncle Val’s favourite cooking ingredients, but also happen to make a delicious gin. This features juniper, cucumber, lemon, sage and lavender in the mix.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. Generous citrus oils combine with lemon barley sugar, sage and hints of cucumber, leading into a silky, creamy entry followed by a full flavoured, off dry profile echoing the aromas; lovely citrus accent with the juniper in retreat, this dries to finish vibrant, almost tangy with lemonade gelato / lemon barley sugar and the cucumber most salient in the fade. 45% Alc.Vol.

Other reviews... Sweet-tasting and citrusy, this has a light herbal aroma. It shows distinct cucumber and lavender notes on the palate, and it should lend itself to spring and summer cocktails. Keep an eye out for exciting savory and spicy variations of Uncle Val’s that may be coming to market soon.

If you're wanting to depart from the gin mainstream, this leaves traditional botanicals to one side in place of black pepper, red bell pepper, and pimento.

Tasting note: Opens with suggestions of liquorice root and peppered cucumber. Second pass ups the pepper but introduces light citrus peel and juniper to the mix. Creamy entry follows through with black pepper, cucumber and a smoked meat-like finish that's more reminiscent of mezcal than gin. Concludes citrus like with lingering white pepper and smoke. Odd but fun. Would make a novel contribution to Bloody Marys. 45% Alc./Vol.

A cryo-filtered wheat grain spirit is the starting point of this modern spin on a classic, offering a fine balance of juniper, coriander seed and angelica root. Native botanicals including lemon myrtle, river mint, Tasmanian pepperberry and locally sourced basil, bring the vibrant flavour of Australia to the spirit. Poppyseed, cinnamon and black pepper complete the structure. Through maceration, vapour infusion and tinctures, the resulting gin delivers soft citrus and spicy tones underpinning more assertive, herbaceous gin flavours with a citrus edge and freshness from the native river mint. Smooth enough to sip neat!

Ungava gin has become the flagship of a portfolio that includes some of the most renowned spirits in Canada. In a relatively short time, it's grown to become the number two brand by sales in the country's deluxe gin category.

Composed of six wild botanicals native to the arctic region, handpicked during the fleeting Summer, including cloudberry, crowberry, Nordic juniper, Labrador tea and rose hips, the stunning colour is naturally derived. It adds a striking visual touch to many standard gin cocktails (think G&Ts, Martinis and Negronis, where the flavour also contributes a delicate bitterness). Unashamedly a contemporary style that will find both supporters and detractors, its fabulous neon colour, distinctive savory / herbaceous character and sheer mixability will keep you coming back.

Tasting note: Bright yellow-gold with pale straw edges. Moderate aromas offer a subdued juniper, chamomile tea / dried herb bouquet. Light to medium bodied featuring low-key juniper and citrus; almost vodka-like to finish with sedate spice and herbal tea notes persisting. Soft textured, easy drinking gin for eye-catching martinis. 43.1% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Bizarre electric golden yellow color. Mild, spicy, green aromas and flavors of spicy gherkin, sweet and hot peppers, and egg nog with a glycerous, soft, dryish light-to-medium body and a warming, intriguing, medium-length spicy bread pudding, dusty juniper and pine sap, dried citrus, and minerals finish. A colorful gin with a peppery streak for savory cocktails.

...A surprising bright daffodil yellow, this arctic-inspired gin has a light feel and a relatively neutral aroma and flavor. The palate shows some juniper, plus slight black pepper heat on finish.

    Le Gin 1 & 9 Gin (700ml)
    FRANCE
    $84. 99
    Bottle
    $1019.88 Dozen

Produced from a selection of 9 ingredients (hence the name 1&9) including juniper berries, sweet orange peel, coriander, Jamaican chili pepper, angelica and cardamon.

Tasting note: Crystal clear appearance. Features semi sweet, perfumed scents of citrus peel - in particular, mandarin and orange - with the juniper note restrained. Second inspection finds hints of coriander and liquorice too, but overall the aroma remains in the ripe citrus spectrum. A water like entry leads into a medium dry, vibrant and spicy mid palate. Flavours of juniper and coriander seed present with good length and balance. Finishes floral and slightly soapy with a delicate, dry and mildly chalky aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

Vickers Gin (700ml) - Older Bottling
    Geelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $49. 99

    $599.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

Having been imported from London in the 1930s, Vickers has been produced under license in Geelong since the 40s, to this day "inspired" by the original recipe.

The English word 'gin' is derived from the French word 'genievre', meaning juniper, the original herb used by the ancient distillers to make their medicines. It must still be the most prominent flavour in gin under EC regulations. London Dry gin is a style of gin and not a geographical description. The term 'dry' is a reference from the old days when the most popular gin was 'Old Tom', which was sweetened with sugar and glycerine. Dry gin was so named to distinguish it from the sweet version.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. An initial whiff of dried juniper, lemon peel and pine needle is followed by sweet, caramel like scents. Neither fresh nor distinctive as gin should be. Palate is faintly fruity in a blanco tequila kind of way and on the sweeter side with hints of marshmallow and little juniper to speak of. Warm, spicy mouthfeel. Meek citrus and juniper are followed by a peppery, citrus and pine needle aftertaste. With so many wonderful gins now available, it's a wonder why anyone would bother with this. 37% Alc./Vol.

    NETHERLANDS
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 41.7%

VL92 Gin was born of the desire of two entrepreneurs to create their ultimate gin. Built upon a malt wine foundation, it has its roots in the Dutch genever tradition. The malt wine gives it its boldness; its complexity derives from the play between botanical elements that finish with a citrusy / coriander leaf end note.

The Gin is named after a historic Dutch sailing vessel whose freight contained exotic spices too daring for the local genever recipes. In the early 17th century the Dutch shipped the first Genever to the United Kingdom. The VL92 creators followed suit when in 2012, they sailed their first export shipment to the UK in a small boat, "putting a bit of Dutch Courage back in Gin"

If your house is full of Ikea furniture, the minimalist packaging will appeal! 41.7% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Powerful, complex and warming aromas of orris root, pine sap, ripe juniper, lemon grass and late chamomile. Follows through with a peppery delivery and flavours of juniper, menthol, lemon peel, thyme and lingering ginger heat. A fresh, spiced up London Dry style. Best tempered with tonic. 44% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Japanese brewery-distillery, Meiri Shuriu utilize traditional brewing techniques and proprietary yeast strains to prompt long-term low temperature fermentations that result in low astringency and delicate, aromatic flavours in their award-winning sakes. To create their gin, ten year old sake is vacuum distilled in a single pot still with seven botanicals including juniper berries, lemon peel, orange peel and cinnamon. The aroma offers a curious mix of candied orange, mandarin peel, boiled lemons and light juniper. Creamy and citrus-forward, in the mouth it's medium bodied, finishing with salivating citrus oils and mild pepper warmth. Singularly focussed, but deliciously fresh. 45% Alc./Vol.

    UNITED KINGDOM
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

A gin that's received glowing praise since its release, including a double gold at the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Handcrafted by lifelong friends, Tom Warner and Sion Edwards in a barn in Harrington, Northamptonshire, it showcases their passion for the highest quality local agricultural ingredients, sourced from their own farms in England and Wales. Every bottle contains 56% natural spring water, also sourced from their property. The base is a neutral barley spirit, redistilled with 11 botanicals including juniper, coriander and cardamom with the elderflower used grown on the distiller's own farm. Hand-bottled, wax sealed and hand labelled on the property, this is the culmination of three years work. Current stocks represent a very limited trial shipment into Australia.

Other reviews... Appearance: Crystal clear. Aroma: Clean, pungent and floral with lavender, parma violet and potpourri. Menthol piney juniper with liquorice, black pepper and cashew nuts. Taste: Coriander and cardamom battle for dominance with piney juniper and cracked black pepper heat over a liquorice counter attack. Aftertaste: Cardamon and black pepper spice linger with liquorice and hop resin-like juniper. It could be argued this contemporary gin is cardamom rather than juniper-led and won’t be for folk looking for a classic London dry gin. 44% Alc./Vol. 3.5 stars - www.diffordsguide.com

Warner Edwards Victoria's Rhubarb Gin (700ml)
    UNITED KINGDOM
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
A gin made using a crop of rhubarb that was originally grown in the kitchen gardens of Buckingham Palace during the reign of Queen Victoria, and has since had quite a journey. Half of the crop was sent to the Vice Regal Lodge in Dublin, which later became the President’s House. It has now made its way back to Crown Estate land in Lincolnshire and is being organically grown by Fraser M Key. The remaining half left in the grounds of Buckingham Palace was destroyed during The War, which makes Warner Edwards' rhubarb very special indeed.

Warner Edward's comment, "The rhubarb is thick and fibrous, so we freeze it to break it down and once thawed, we squeeze it through a cider press. Sugar is added to balance the acidity of the rhubarb and it's then blended with our gin".

The base spirit for the recipe is the company's Harrington Dry Gin which employs 11 botanicals including angelica root, black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, coriander seed, dried elderflower, ground nutmeg, juniper, lemon peel, orange peel and one secret ingredient.

Tasting note: [BATCH 1 tasted] Brilliant crystal clear, noticeably viscous appearance. Generous aroma yields powerful scents of juniper, mixed citrus peel and lemonade gelato followed by hints of white pepper and lavender. Viscous entry leads into an exceptionally concentrated citrus peel accented profile with hints of juniper and pepper. Following where 'The Broadside' left off is West Winds latest endeavor 'Captain's Cut'; a hefty 63% ABV Gin behemoth which sees the addition of native sage and thyme botanicals. This is a second run of this bottling, which yielded under 300 bottles!

    From the West Winds crew:
"Aiming to take charge with it's superior alcoholic strength 'Captains Cut' shows an adventurous side, resulting in pink grapefruit flesh and resinous hoppy notes on the nose. The peppery palate is full to the brim with woody herbaceous notes of native sage and thyme and shows undercurrents of cut violet and soft pine needles"

Tasting note: Crystal clear with thick legs. Unusual opening scents of fresh linen and paraffin; opens up in a significant way after aeration with intense lemon meringue, white pepper and grapefruit-like aromas. Later inspections suggest sweet oregano and fresh potpourri. Creamy entry preludes a full throttle, ripe citrus and pepper attack. Finishes tongue tingling, warm with delicate piney / woody / herb and pepper accented notes. An immense gin experience. 63% Alc./Vol.

Of the many gins in their portfolio, Whitley Neill considers this to be their most classic. Focusing on just one citrus: dried orange peel, it remains true to the minimalist recipes of traditional London Drys, the short list of other botanicals including juniper, coriander, angelica root and liquorice root. The resulting gin delivers strong notes of candied orange, a touch of white pepper and a solid backbone of juniper with a pleasant oily texture that cools the mouth. ABV: 43%
It's been described as making "an ideal G&T for people who just don’t like gin."
The essence of rhubarb adds a tart crisp edge to the gin base whilst the ginger extract warms the palate. “We’d been looking around the world at different botanicals and then we thought – why not try to balance things with something from closer to home,” explained its creator. “Most people seem to think that rhubarb and ginger pair well together, so it seemed like a lovely way to go.”

Other reviews... ... Lovely is one word for it. The nose is all fizzy cola bottles, whilst the mouth is those click clack against your teeth rhubarb and custard sweets of yesteryear. Note that in both circumstances, despite the gulf between flavour differences, the general impression is one of sugar. It’s just so candied that it attacks the gin within, and while little green notes of fresh rhubarb rise to bring some element of sensibility to proceedings, the overall effect is as far removed from gin as… well, flavoured vodka. - ginfoundry.com

It's always amusing to see London Dry Gin on a label, and then discover the product is produced hundreds of miles away from London. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful new gin that adds another page to the ever-growing book of 'boutique' bottlings. As our portfolio grows so does our awareness and understanding of the intricacies and curiosities of this most versatile spirit. Lovers of citrusy styles will most certainly find favour with Whitley Neil, while the "juniper junkies" might want to give this one a miss.

Tasting note: [BATCH 1 tasted] Clear silvery appearance. Plenty of citrus peel immediately evident in the opening sniffs, perhaps the juniper has been upped slightly too since our last encounter with this brand. There's hints of pepper as well. A creamy entry follows through to a medium dry, juniper focused mid palate. Great mouthfeel. Really nicely balanced with the late citrus oils entering to round off beautifully fresh, balanced and tangy. Delicate spices carry through to the aftertaste. 42% Alc./Vol.

First tasting 2011: Crystal clear, water like appearance. A delightful perfume of citrus oils, blossom and infusions leap from the glass. Underneath the citrus, some spice lurks, supported by a pristinely clean, sweet spirit. The palate weight is generous yet soft and silky, delivering an explosion of creamy citrus flavours above a delicately spiced background. A touch of anise emerges. Perfect balance. Long aftertaste of citrus peel and spice. 42.0% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Honestly, the raspberry hit is so intense you can almost feel the imminent arrival of berries set to burst in your mouth, although they’re joined by a stewed, sweet hibiscus and fiery coriander. You’d have to search far – very far – to find any juniper to taste here, so as a Gin it’s a no from us. As a cocktail spirit, though, it works. It’s so forceful in its delivery of flavour that it’ll cut its way through a million potential mixers, and the aftertaste, which really doesn’t take too long to arrive, is a surprisingly herbal affair. With tonic it’s… odd. The quinine and greens of the underlying gin run away together, leaving the raspberries in the dust and resulting in an aftertaste that is nowhere near where it needs to be. Tonic isn’t always necessary here though, and just thinking about how this would work all dressed up in a Clover Club has us all flustered. Try it in a cocktail. It works. - ginfoundary.com

Tasting note: [Batch 001 tasted] Brilliant gold colour is slightly viscous. Issues attractive aromas of apple sauce and quince jam with cinnamon and pepper warmth. Creamy, viscous entry followed by a fabulous burst of quince, pepper, poached pear, sweet spice and balancing acidity to finish. Other reviews... Crammed full of Sicilian oranges, the Whitley Neill Blood Orange Gin is an intense take on the spirit. So oily it feels luxurious, the oranges have given their all and then some to the gin, bringing huge, sweet perfumed and scented soap that smells so rich you’ll want to bathe in it. The sweetness so prevalent across this range is the first to hit the mouth, smashing into the teeth with the full force of a waterfall. The orange is huge and present, and while a ginny heart remains, it spends its entire existence clouded in citrus, as though it were trapped in a bubble. Tonic ups the citrus sharpness infinitely, but also paves the way for the more pithy, earthy elements of the skin to come through. It tastes as though whole oranges were used here, but now just the peel. We’d have it in a Martini, but again tonic doesn’t do it justice. 43% Alc./Vol. - ginfoundry.com

Crafted in a century old copper still at Langley Distillery in Birmingham using British Wheat, this new Scottish gin comes infused with six native hand foraged botanicals from the Isle of Colonsay in the Scottish Hebrides, with a further ten as the base. These include water mint, meadowsweet, sea buckthorn, heather flowers, lemon balm and bog myrtle. Tasted from a 20ml sample, the nose is slightly reticent, and it's clearly a contemporary style so juniper isn't salient. Still, the palate manages a herbal, citrus complexity that makes this engaging uncut. Textural, oily, spicy and long through the finish with herbal tea notes and a host of botanicals playing second fiddle. The gin comes suitably presented in a distinctive bottle displaying an expressionist water colour representation of Kiloran Bay on Colonsay. 43.7% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Wild Island Botanic Gin is a refreshing and Summery gin. At its heart is the deep flavour of the dried lemon peel and the character of the essential oils has been carried into the gin well. This is balanced with floral notes from the heather flowers, sweet notes from the Meadowsweet, some tartness from the Sea Buckthorn, and a more refreshing kick at the finish from the lemon balm and mint. Ideal in a Tom Collins or Gin and Tonic, garnish with a slice of lemon and serve with a light tonic to bring out the citrus flavours. - theginguide.com

... it smells quite gentle with the juniper coming to the fore in the glass. It’s very zingy on the tongue with lots of flavours, leaving an aniseed-esque flavour on the tongue. It’s punchy and bold, and certainly not your restrained British G&T of times gone by. Talking of tonic, mixed up with some Fever Tree this tones down and becomes slightly sweeter and creamier (thanks meadowsweet and sea buckthorn). The floral notes become more obvious and the drink has a better balance to it. I found this a little intense when it was straight, but now it is a G&T the sweetness balances the more vibrant tones. Perhaps it’s because I’m not a liquorice fan, but I can REALLY taste the liquorice here which is spoiling it slightly – although if that’s your thing then this might just be the drink for you. - jennyinbrighton.com

So appropriately one side of the bottle is labelled “Limited Edition Chase Juniper Vodka” while the other side is labelled “Williams Chase Single Botanical Gin. Perhaps it’s just bi-polar? Like other chase vodkas, and indeed gins, this is based on potato spirit distilled at Chase’s family-owned farm distillery from potatoes grown on the farm. The juniper berries which flavour this gin (not from the farm) are distilled in the farms copper gin still with the potato spirit. Limited edition of 1,000 bottles.

Williams Sloe and Mulberry Gin is a made using the company's celebrated vodka as a base. As always, inspired by unique and decidedly British flavours, the Chase team marinate Herefordshire hedgerow sloe berries, picked after the first frost last November in a bespoke gin blend. Incorporating a selection of botanicals designed specifically to augment the rich flavour of the fruit, the sloes were left to marinade for an initial period of eight months. They then source delicious, but rarely seen, mulberries; adding the fruit for a final two months before decanting and bottling. 30% Alc./Vol.

A modern take on traditional Genever, produced from a mash of equal parts malted barley, rye and corn. After a week of fermentation, the mash is distilled three times in a pot still. Part of it is then distilled a fourth time with botanicals including juniper, licorice and aniseed, the whole finally matured for 5 years in 200 litre American oak casks. The end result is bottled as a single barrel release - a concept typically used in the Scotch and American whisky industry, primarily sold in the Netherlands and Germany. 38% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Very dominant wood aromas, which is to be expected from new oak casks. Vanilla, fudge and wood shavings. There's a whisper of aniseed here as well, while the palate leaves a little more room for the spirit to shine. It has a creamy mouthfeel, and there are some pine needles, as well as coriander. Worth a try if you're into aged grain spirits. 88 points - distiller.com

    NETHERLANDS
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44.5%
The Zuidam Distillery was started back in 1975 by Fred van Zuidam as a deliberately contained operation with one small copper still. It took more than a decade to forge their present reputation as the finest distillery in the Netherlands. In 1989 Zuidam expanded their warehouse to 600 square meters and one production line. Presently, both sons, Patrick and Gilbert, run the distillery under the watchful eyes of their parents. With four brand new copper stills, over 1000 oak barrels, four production lines and modern tank storage, Zuidam is now a state of the art operation, however, they have held on to one throwback from the past - Windmills. These are used to mill the grains destined for their Genevers and Malt Whisky. It not only preserves this iconic piece of Dutch heritage, but more importantly, the producers believe that the traditional slow grind causes almost no increase in the temperature of the grains and thus helps preserve the wonderful aromas.

"Dutch Courage" is a reference to Genever's past, when Genever found favour across the English Channel; first as a medicine (Samuel Pepys wrote in 1660 of curing a case of "colic" with a dose of "strong water made with juniper") and then as a beverage. British soldiers encountered it as they marauded around northern Europe in the Thirty Years War and found it much to their liking. They brought back a taste for the "Dutch Courage" as they called the 'medicine' (often taking a good slug before battle), and inevitably made their own contribution to the lexicon of spirits: The word 'genever' was corrupted by the English to 'Ginever' and finally abbreviated to 'Gin'.

Other reviews... Wonderful beginning aroma of dried citrus zest/rind; following aeration the bouquet turns steely, spicy and earthy. The palate entry is tart, sublimely orangey and borderline sour; at midpalate the angelica, juniper and cardamom take charge, mingling perfectly with the orange rind. Ends silkily with flashes of orange zest and juniper. First class. 96-100 points - www.wineenthusiast.com

...Appearance: Crystal clear. Aroma: A scent rather like just-watered earth (orris root?) mingles with the more upfront juniper and citrus. Taste: Invigorating, clean and fresh, slightly steely with citrus zestiness, angelica, juniper, cardamom and a hint of peppery spice. Aftertaste: Long, cleansing pine fresh finish with parma violets.Outstanding. 5 stars. - www.diffordsguide.com

Zuidam's Old Genever is distilled from a mash of malted barley, rye and corn. Small stills produce a very delicate and fruity new spirit. Part of this new spirit is then distilled again over a proprietory mixture of botanicals including Italian juniper berries and orris root, Moroccan coriander, whole Madagascar vanilla beans, Indian liquorice root, Sri Lankan cardamom and angelica root.

After blending, the spirit is then filled into small barrels. Zuidam use new barrels of American White Oak as well as barrels that have previously held Bourbon or Olorosso Sherry.

The Genever ages rather quickly in the warm and dry atmosphere of the distillery warehouse. Evaporation losses are high (between 4% and 5% per year).

Tasting note: The brilliant bright gold appearance is pure and clear. Paprika, white pepper and liquorice bullets feature in the opening stages with more grain and juniper evident in the second pass. A satiny mouthfeel develops with flavours of chamomile, olive bread and peppery juniper towards the finish. Ends pleasantly warming, light and long. 38% Alc./Vol.

Wonderful opening scents of fresh picked dill, caraway and fennel with further exposure revealing back-seat juniper and accenting the sweet, underlying barrel qualities. Light to medium bodied, buttery mouthfeel; hints of dried herb and black pepper through the muted malty vanilla sweetness. So graceful and delicate as this concludes, lingering with hints of white pepper, vanilla and butter menthol lozenge late in the aftertaste. Deliciously different. A must try in the genre. 38% Alc./Vol.

We're serious about gin.

Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
