Their Pinot Noir is sourced from the Grand Cru village pair of Verzenay and Verzy, while much of their Chardonnay is in Villers Marmery, and the Pinot Meunier a touch west in Ville-Dommange. Hugues has long been concerned with the health of his vineyards (along with himself), and made the transition to organic farming in 2006 with certification coming in 2013, followed a year later with biodynamic certification in 2014. Each parcel is vinified separately and dependant on the terroir will have fermentation occur in neutral oak or enamel lined cement tanks, all using native yeasts. Across the range dosage is kept very low, with many wines now bottled as brut nature (zero dosage). As to be expected with wines from Verzenay and Verzy, these Champagnes are sleek and structured, tightly coiled in their youth but with fantastic concentration of fruit.
A bottling of 100% Chardonnay from the lieu-dit Les Alouettes St-Bets in Villers-Marmery, a 45 year-old parcel of vines located near the border of Verzy. A blend of the 2013 and 2012 vintages that was disgorged in March, the NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs La Colline Inspiré opens in the glass with aromas of almond paste, citrus oil, crisp green apple and pastry cream, gently framed by its élevage in barrel. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, with an immensely incisive spine of ripe but bracing acidity, a fine mousse and a long, electric and searingly saline finish. This bottling is produced from several parcels in Montgueux, and all the vins clairs are now fermented and matured in barrel. Drink 2020-2035.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 31, 2019)There are lovely, up front, crazy coconut and tropical fruit aromas, along with a bit of spice and tangy barrel-aged oxidative notes. The texture is one of silky perfection. The freshness, the density of the fruit, and the complexity of the ageing create terrific dynamic tension on the palate. This is blended from base wines from 2018 (12 months in barrel on the lees), 2017 (24 months), 2016 (36 months), and 2015 (48 months), and aged on the lees before disgorging in January of 2022 – a superb wine. Lassaigne's vintage Blanc de Blancs is perhaps the sweet spot in the range. As a cuvee of 100% Chardonnay from the Le Cotet (35%) and Les Paluets (65%) vineyards, the wine was raised in tank before 8 years in bottle and disgorgement in late 2023. Given the extended lees contact this wine shows an enormous level of depth and complexity.

Based on the excellent 2019 vintage, and derived from the lower part of the parcel in front of Lassaigne's winery, planted between 1964 and 1968, the newly released NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Cotet wafts from the glass with aromas of toasted nuts, crisp stone fruit, citrus oil and youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, with tangy acids and a long, saline finish, its reductive profile means that it really rewards some time in the glass. Drink 2023 - 2038.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 11, 2023)This magnum of Le Cotet is starting to open now, with notes of smoke, truffle and brioche over ripe green apple fruit. The bright acidity carries the wine on the palate but doesn't overwhelm at all – the sensation is subtle elegance and finesse, with nothing shrill or harsh. The base is the 2011 vintage (aged more than a year in used barrels on the lees) with about 10% reserve wines; the blend was disgorged (with no dosage) in July 2015. This wine has dynamic freshness and impressive length and should continue to age in a proper cellar for years to come. Drink 2022 - 2040.

Krug Grande Cuvee 171eme Edition ChampagneChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $525.00$425. 00Bottle$5100.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkSince their inception in 1843, Krug Grande Cuvée has been their signature wine, and the most important wine they produce each year. Crafting Grande Cuvée only once a year, Krug now distinguish each release numerically, and provide great insight into the detailed composition via their Krug iD site. While these Edition wines are non-vintage, Krug prefers to call them multi-vintage given they use a large proportion of reserve wines in the blend, normally over 120 base wines spanning 10+ vintages. The 171eme Edition is a staggering blend of 131 wines from 12 vintages back to 2000, with the base wine hailing from the excellent 2015 vintage. The varietal mix of the base wine is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Pinot Meunier, and comprises 58% of the blend, while 42% of reserve wines are used from 11 older vintages stretching back to 2000.

Non vintage? Technically so, but in fact there is a new edition every year, this the 171st, based on 131 wines from 12 vintages dating back to 2000. It is composed of 45/37/18% pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier. Krug’s power is an iron fist in a velvet glove, and it’s my favourite champagne.

James Halliday's Top 100 Wines 2023The NV Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition, (2015 base vintage) is bright and focused in the glass, showing notable tension and tons of class. Citrus peel, white flowers, mint and white pepper all lend remarkable brightness to a Grande Cuvée that is built more on linear cut rather than volume. Krug is always among the first houses to pick. The 171 clearly shows that style. The blend is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Meunier, vintages 2015 through 2000. Disgorged: Winter 2021-2022. Krug ID: 122003

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe tightness and tension of this is impressive considering the youngest wine from this is 2015 (hot and dry year), with some wines going back to 2000. Ginger and orange zest. Some creme brulee. It's medium-bodied with apple, pie crust and floral character. It's salty and zesty yet, at the same time, complex and gorgeous. Chamomile and other floral teas highlight everything. Turns rich and flavorful at the finish. Terrific release. Really takes off at the end. Drink or hold.

JamesSuckling.comThe NV Grande Cuvée 171ème Edition is a delightful blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Pinot Meunier and boasts an attractive and captivating aroma of dried fruits, pastry, lemon oil, marzipan, spring flowers and ginger, with hints of almond and vanilla notes that become more pronounced over time. This medium to full-bodied wine is precise and well-structured, with a fleshy core of fruit and a sapid, incisive finish. Crafted around the 2015 vintage, the blend comprises 131 reserve wines from as far back as 2000 (42% of the total blend) and is expected to age beautifully over the next decade. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Yohan Castaing - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateA vivid Champagne, with chiseled acidity and a fine, vivacious mousse creating a buoyant frame for layered flavors of crushed black raspberry, grilled nuts, pink grapefruit sorbet and coffee liqueur, plus fragrant accents of ground ginger and anise, graphite and lime blossoms. Alison Napjus - Wine SpectatorSuch a complete wine. It pushes flavour to the corners of the mouth. Complex and detailed. It’s a wholesome experience. Fine gentle mousse but firm enough to keep your palate energised. It smells of salted shortbread, quince and croissant with almond cream. Then nougat and razor-sharp acidity. Crème brûlée and salt flakes. Crunchy almonds and limey acidity. Oyster shell with lemon, the mineral note. Complete balance. And it’s long and delightful. I forgot about sparkling Shiraz for a moment. On that balmy winter day in Sydney. Drink 2023 - 2033+

Kasia Sobiesiak - The Wine FrontDeliciously balanced, this Champagne is impressive. The iconic wine is in its 171st blend, meaning it combines vintages for the best result for each bottling, not a specific vintage. The 171st essence is dry, while also having fine textured fruit. Roger Voss - Wine Enthusiast MagazineSpanning from 1998 through the 2015 vintage, the NV Champagne Grande Cuvée 171 is lush with a kaleidoscope of aromas including orange marmalade, toasted brioche, almond, and ripe peaches. Krug Collection 1988 is part of Krug’s trilogy of three exceptional years (1988, 1989, 1990) with completely different conditions that resulted in Champagnes that are unique. Comprised of 50% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, 18% Pinot Meunier, Krug Collection 1988 was kept on lees for 29 years before finally receiving its cork in autumn 2017. 1988 is one of the most feted vintages in Champagne, and Krug decided to release the 1988 Collection after both 1989 and 1990 editions.

The 1988 Krug Collection, a 2017 disgorgement, offers an enticing bouquet of grilled walnut, baked bread and a touch of freshly baked gingerbread on the nose, displaying exquisite delineation and focus. Alison Napjus - Wine Spectator (Dec 2019)When Krug 1988 was first released, a few bottles remained stored in the Krug cellars to see how they aged. The result today is a bouquet of incredible complexity, a veritable spice box full of seductive scents including sandalwood, mocha, and leather as well as a waxy note. The palate is perfectly balanced with both ample flesh and breathtaking freshness, and a wide-ranging flavour and textural profile having elements of quince, candied fruit, and spices. A floral freshness takes the upper hand on the long finish of this supremely subtle and light-footed Champagne. Such a beguiling mix of youthful energy with eminent ageworthiness. Readers who can find the 1988 should not hesitate, as it is stellar.

Krug's just-released 1990 Collection is magnificent. Remarkably fresh for a 26 year-old wine, the 1990 Collection captures the Krug house style at its very best. Floral notes meld into hints of apricot, chamomile, orchard fruit, vanillin and sweet spices. On the palate, the 1990 is creamy, vivid and super-expressive, but what is most intriguing is how fresh the Collection is relative to Vintage Champagne, which has always been a heavier, more oxidative wine. Krug's 2008 Brut is slated to be released at the end of 2021, but any readers who purchase the wine will need to exercise considerably more patience if they are to enjoy it in its prime, as it is very tightly wound out of the gates. Unwinding in the glass with a youthfully discreet bouquet of clear honey, dried fruit, walnut oil, Meyer lemon and rock salt, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, with a racy spine of acidity, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a penetrating, saline finish. The polar stylistic opposite of the rich, demonstrative 2006, the 2008 is a rather understated, taut vintage from Krug that isn't as liberally endowed with the house's characteristic toasty patina as its immediate predecessor. Drink 2026 - 2046.

The NV Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs marries power with energy to a degree I have not seen before here. In this edition, the Brut Nature is decidedly powerful and broad, with less of the tension seen in some previous releases. It's as if all the Chardonnay flavors have been turned up to the maximum. Orange peel, apricot, chamomile and spice are some of the many notes that fill out the layers. The current release is based on 2017, with reserve wines from 2016 and 2015, all done in neutral oak. Zero dosage. Disgorged: February, 2020. Drink 2020 - 2026.

The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Longitude 1er Cru sizzles with tension and energy. Chalk and limestone soils in the villages of Vertus, Cramant and Oger give birth to a Champagne endowed with so much vibrancy. Citrus, yellow flowers, spice and baked apple tart add aromatic nuance, but it is the wine's pure drive and texture that stand out most. This is a fabulous showing. Creaminess in texture with very fine bead, vivacious and fresh-tasting with lovely salty-chalky feel very present through the wine and to the powdery, lightly puckering finish. Vinous in a way, gently savoury throughout, exceptionally long and runs with so much energy. Beautiful.

Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra BrutChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $150.00$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkLarmandier-Bernier’s Latitude is a 100% Côte des Blancs Chardonnay from vineyards on the southern side of Vertus. These are vineyards on roughly the same latitude and the name also hints at the breadth of texture that the wines from these sites (having more clay in the soil) tend to offer up. In the cellar Larmandier uses mostly large format casks (almost all the wood now comes from Stockinger in Austria) and less and less steel tanks. The alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place without inoculation, and there is no fining or filtration. Bottle maturation takes place in the underground cellars over a period of more than two years, and each bottle is disgorged manually, six months before being released and dosed at low, Extra Brut levels.
Once dissipated, the creamy white mousse leaves behind a pale straw coloured base that has a glimmer of gold to the edges. Nibble and exceptionally fine bubbles rising to the surface. On the nose, aromas of pear intermingle with citrus, yeast lees, light baked bread and hints of sherbet. Long, dry and virile, the refreshing palate consists of baked pear, citrus and yeast lees characters over subtle oily toast nuances and faint remanets of biscuit and cashew. The finish is very dry with crisp, mouth watering acidity and a long refined aftertaste.

The Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru Latitude from Larmandier-Bernier is a powerful, structured wine. Deep and resonant on the palate, the Latitude packs a serious punch. There is no shortage of depth or intensity, that much is clear. Dried apricot, sage, fennel, crushed stone all open up in the glass, adding layers of nuance. Readers should expect an imposing, rich Champagne that will be at its best at the dinner table. Like all of the Larmandier-Bernier Champagnes, the Latitude will offer its best drinking if opened several hours in advance. This release is 60% 2015 and 40% reserve wines. As always, Latitude emerges from clay rich soils that confer breadth. Dosage is 4 grams per liter.

Larmandier-Bernier Rose de Saignee Premier Cru ChampagneChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $230.00$190. 00Bottle$2280.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkSaignée literally means ‘to bleed’. In winemaking parlance, it means to draw the free-run juice of a grape, off the grape skins typically prior to, or shortly after, the start of fermentation. In this case, the grapes (100% Pinot Noir) are allowed to macerate for several days before the juice is drawn off and it is this ‘soak’ that gives the colour and much of the body and flavour to the wine. This technique is now extremely rare in Champagne—it is a demanding method of vinification that requires grapes with an excellent degree of maturity. Hence most rosé (in Champagne) is made by the addition of a little red wine. This bottling is drawn entirely from what is thought to be the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Vertus, and one of the very last 100% Pinot vineyards. As with all of Larmandier’s wines it’s naturally fermented. Larmandier raises part of this cuvée in a Nomblot concrete egg and partly in stainless steel (and more recently he has been trialling amphora as well).
A fluffy mousse dissipates over a salmon pink coloured base that’s threaded by an exceptionally fine and persistent stream of bubbles. Jumping out of the glass are alluring scents of strawberries, subtle blood orange and raspberry which meld into yeast lees, baked bread and faint cashew notes. Delicious strawberry, raspberry and subtle blood orange fruits have a creamy feel over a back drop of yeast lees, bready characters and traces of sherbet. Dry refreshing finish with mouth watering acidity leading into a long creamed strawberry conclusion.

Wine SpectatorLaurent Perrier first released this rosé in 1968, well before it became fashionable to have a pink-hued Champagne in the portfolio. 100% Pinot Noir is sourced from both the north and south sectors of the Montagne de Reims sub-region, and famously draws its colour from skin contact rather than the more usual addition of red wine. It has striking freshness on the nose, bags of pure, zippy strawberry and raspberry fruit flavours, and satisfying vivacity. It's beautifully balanced with a long finish, and calls for a carpaccio of raw salmon.

Part of a new collection that’s just reaching the market now, the NV Champagne Collection 245 is based on the 2020 vintage. (The trilogy of vintages in the collection are from the early ripening 2018, which is lighter and fruitier, the 2019, which is richer and more powerful, and the 2020, which is somewhere in between the other two.) The blend of the 245 is 41% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir, and the rest Meunier. It has a reflective straw hue and offers notes of fresh almond, bread dough, and fresh flowers. Medium-bodied on the palate, with a fruity nature, it’s crunchy and fresh in the glass, with a lovely chalky texture, good refinement, a note of fresh nectarine, and a clean finish. Dry, but with a delicate rounded feel and some depth throughout, it opens to show more of its salinity and the delicate reductive smoke that frames the wine with oyster shell-like umami character. It’s approachable now but will age with ease.

If the 2014 vintage was especially open and demonstrative, the 2015 Cristal is going to require more patience. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp stone fruits, white flowers, crushed mint and subtle hints of buttery pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a deep, concentrated and rather introverted core of fruit framed by chalky extract and animated by a pretty pinpoint mousse. William Kelley – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateI have tasted the 2015 Cristal three times so far. Those tastings paint a portrait of a complex Champagne that is still finding its center. Tasted at the maison, the 2015 is rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous textual intensity and also a good bit of energy to back it up. Citrus confit, spice, ginger, chalk and dried flowers abound in a Champagne endowed with tremendous aromatic presence in a style that offers notable richness but in a lighter style than vintages such as 2012. There is a bit of the savoriness that is such a signature of the year, but it is nicely integrated into the wine’s fabric. Two later tastings in my office strongly suggest that 2015 has already started to shut down a bit, which is a shame, as it may be hard to read for some time to come. The 2015 is a rare Cristal in this tasting (the other is 2002) that incorporates all 45 plots within the estate. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged: November 2022. Drink 2025-2040.

Antonio Galloni - VinousFor the warm and dry vintage this has tremendous freshness and elegance. The complex nose of citrus blossom, mint, lemon and lime zest opens up slowly as this aerates in the glass. The wine’s ample structure is still quite firm, which is a vintage characteristic, the mousse very fine but also very lively for an eight-year-old champagne. Cristal fans will love this as it is, but a year or two more in the bottle will do a lot for the very long mineral finish of this youthful masterpiece. A cuvee of 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay, picked from all 45 Cristal vineyard plots. Tasted at the Cristal vertical tasting at the champagne house on July 6th, 2023. Drink from release.

James SucklingI had the opportunity to taste the 2015 Champagne Cristal twice, both at the house in Reims as well as at my home office. On both occasions, the wine offered a terrific balance of decadence and notable freshness for this vintage, which was highly expressive on opening. The release reveals layered custardy notes of lemon balm, incense, apricot, and hazelnut. Medium to full-bodied, the mousse is fluffy and rounded out beautifully through the palate. Round and approachable, it has a well-managed richness along with underlying savory sapidity and saline to keep this going over the coming three or more decades, with a chalky tannin structure to support it. Drink 2025-2050. This was only the second vintage where Mr. Lécaillon opted to source from all of the 45 plots dedicated to Cristal. (Since then, he chose to draw from even more plots for the 2018.) Drink 2023-2053.

James SucklingThe 2012 Cristal Rosé is magnificent. When Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon started to move Roederer towards organically farmed fruit, he started with Cristal Rosé, Roederer’s smallest production cuveé. Because of that, Cristal Rosé is the wine in this range that shows the current Roederer style in its fullest expression. Rich, vivid and crystalline in the glass, the 2012 Cristal Rosé is a Champagne of tremendous gravitas. Chalk, white flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint and blood orange are all beautifully delineated. The 2012 is 55% Pinot from Ay and 45% Chardonnay from Mesnil and Avize. The Pinot fruit gets a 7-10 day cold soak an is the infused into the fermenting Chardonnay musts. Readers who can find the 2012 should not hesitate, as it is truly magical. Pouring an electric pink color, the NV Champagne Imperial Brut Rosé is initially a bit reserved aromatically and opens to juicy aromas of apricot, pressed flowers, and fresh berries. Fluffy and inviting, it’s primary with ripe red fruit through the palate and has a clean and supple finish. Easy-drinking and poppy with fruit, it’s marked by notes of late summer fruits without feeling cloying on the finish. Drink it now or over the next few years.

From 2018 (50%) with the two previous vintages – this is the disgorgement. It’s 65% pinot noir and 35% chardonnay. Organic (certified). Disgorged Jan22.
Toasty scents, touches of stone fruit, fresh and dried, chicken stock, amontillado. Very pristine in the palate yet also imbued with nutty savouriness and chicken stock notes in tow. So deliciously briny! Ripe apple flavours, some nectarine too. Rich in a way but also refreshing. More potent. Has an energy and bent. Drink 2023 - 2027.

L'incandescent is true to its name, displaying a vibrant hue thanks to a short maceration on skins before pressing. The exact time on skins is dependant on taste rather than colour, and varies between 8-36 hours, with the current disgorgement coming in at 22 hours. This is 100% Pinot Noir from the Grand Cru lieu-dit of Les Cumaines, and was vinified entirely in stainless steel, before spending 30 months on lees and disgorged with just 1.5 g/L dosage.
Other Reviews....
Says non vintage but is made of 2018 wine only. Pinot noir that sees 16 hours of maceration. Younger gen, but from multi-gen family, producer.
Very dark coloured and vinous style. Almost like looking at Etna Rosato! Supple texture, almost silky, bubbles are really fine and gentle, almost missing but for lifting the wine brightly and some saline tang alongside all this. Rich, red fruited, some truffle notes, briar and brambles. What a cool wine! Really interesting and complex, is the message. Drink 2023 - 2030.

L'ascendant is a cuvée based on a solera founded with the 2014 L’Atavique, drawn and topped with a 50% ratio each year. It is approximately 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, raised in old oak, before four years on lees and disgorged with extra brut dosage of under 3g/L.

Based in Verzy, a lesser sung parish of Champagne but one where up and coming producers like this can farm their eight hecatres of organic farmed grapes in peace. Low dosage, low sulphur winemaking too. Solera here, but a younger one started in 2014 – this one contains 2017, 2016 and 2014, with 50% taken out each year to make room for current vintage. Matured in oak and on lees for 48 months. Disgorged Jan22.
Complex Champagne, lots of amontillado, Parisian almonds, green cashew and a huge woosh of sea spray. Yes thanks. So saline and briny to taste! Wow. Unreal. Some creamy cashew around that, licks of dried apple, toast, faint honey. Beautiful wine with such incredible energy and zestiness. Stunning wine. Drink 2023 - 2030.

2018 Pascal Agrapart Mineral Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Champagne Grand CruChampagne, FRANCE$370. 00Bottle$4440.00 DozenClosure: CorkChampagne Pascal Agrapart is one of the great grower producers, based at the heart of the Cote des Blancs in the grand cru village of Avize. Pascal has the reputation for being a grape grower first and Champagne producer second; a philosophy shared with his son Ambroise who is now in charge of production. Ambroise and the team works an astonishing 70-plus micro-plots in the Cote des Blancs, mostly in Avize, but also in Cramant, Oiry, Oger, Avenay-Val-d’Or, Bergeres-les-Vertus and Mardeuil. All of these parcels are ploughed, and no chemical pesticides, fertilisers or herbicides are ever used. Production is very small, with no more than 6,000 cases produced in any given year.
Mineral is blended from two adjacent vieilles vignes plots (50-plus years old) on the border between Avize and Cramant, where the vine roots plunge straight into the chalky bedrock. The fruit from Le Champ Bouton in Avize fermented in tank, while the component from Les Bionnes in Cramant was vinified in 600-litre oak casks. The wine spent just over five years on lees and was dosed at 3g/L.
Other Reviews....
The 2018 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Minéral, disgorged in August 2024 with three grams per liter dosage, introduces the range of vintage wines. Defined by poor soils with just about 50 centimeters of topsoil, it comes from two chalk-based, old-vine parcels: Le Champ Bouton in Avize (vinified in tank) and Les Bionnes in Cramant (vinified in an old 600-liter barrel). “In 2017, we lost about 50% to 60% due to frost, then in 2018 we harvested three times the volume of 2017,” reveals Ambroise Agrapart, who is now making the wines, though his father is still very much present. More generously structured compared to the 2016 yet more precise than the 2017, it wafts from the glass with notes of tangerine zest, green apple and dried white flowers. Nakedly chalky with electric-like acidity, it maintains its reputation as the most tensile wine in the range, capturing the freshness much better than many other wines of this vintage. Drink 2024-2044.

Kristaps Karklins - Wine Advocate (Dec 20, 2024)This must be one of the most beguiling and refined 2018s from the Côte des Blancs, managing to retain a tensile, nuanced and detailed complexity in a year that can sometimes be a bit simple. From some of the estate’s chalkiest, shallowest soils, Minéral impresses by setting white peach, bitter almond and dried flowers in a lithe, persistent frame full of leapfrogging details of slate, umami savour and apricot kernel richness, dancing over a long, detailed finish. Terrific. Drink 2024 - 2028.

2018 Pascal Agrapart Avizoise Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Champagne Grand CruChampagne, FRANCE$470. 00Bottle$5640.00 DozenClosure: CorkChampagne Pascal Agrapart is one of the great grower producers, based at the heart of the Cote des Blancs in the grand cru village of Avize.
Avizoise is sourced from old vines of around 50 to 60 years of age, situated in the clay-rich (argilo-calcaire) Coteaux d’Avize vineyards of Les Robarts and Les Gros Yeux. The richer soils and altitude of these neighbouring sites bring more exotic fruit and roundness. The wine aged entirely in 600-litre demi-muid, and bottle fermentation took place under cork rather than crown seal. The 2018 spent just over five years on lees and was dosed at 3 g/L.
Other Reviews....
Aged entirely in 600-liter barrels and, for the first time in the history of this cuvée, released without dosage, the 2018 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Avizoise is nevertheless the most demonstrative vintage wine in Agrapart’s cellar. Crafted from two plots in Avize (Les Robarts and Les Gros Yeux), located just 30 meters from each other and defined by deep, clay-limestone soils, it’s more giving and demonstrative compared to Minéral. Opening in the glass to reveal scents of walnut, pastries and ripe orchard fruit, it is full-bodied, ample and layered with excellent concentration, bright acidity and a long, sapid finish. Les Gros Yeux is one of the plots Agrapart farms with horse, to avoid soil compaction. With Ambroise now in charge of this historic domaine, style remains the same, but he undeniably refines the work. Drink 2024-2044.

Kristaps Karklins - Wine Advocate (Dec 20, 2024)While the Minéral cuvée hails from some of the shallowest, poorest soils in Avize, Avizoise always shows some of the roundness and aromatics of the deeper soils of the Gros Yeux and Robarts parcels. It shows a little more of the heat of the year in 2018, too, with fleshy nectarine, lime and white pepper, deep and long with citrus oil yet retaining a beguiling, papery-delicate texture that all of Agrapart's wines seem to find. For a vintage when blanc de blancs can be a little simplistic, this is full of nerve and detail. Drink 2024 - 2030.
