Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

When Darren and Lucy Golding established Golding Wines and put their first vintage to bottle in 2002 they did so with confidence knowing that the fruit sourced from the family vineyard Darren had planted with his parents Greg and Connie, seven years earlier was coming into its own.  Today their, now expanded, Western Branch Vineyard, located in the Lenswood appellation of the Adelaide Hills remains at the very heart of their business. It is the exclusive fruit source for the Golding Wines range, and the home of their busy cellar door and functions business.

A moreish Adelaide Hills Pinot that's big on personality.

Maturation took place in French oak for a period of 4 months. Deep dark red colour with subtle tinges of black to the edges and a bright light purple red hue. Fragrant violet top notes intermesh with red cherries, strawberries, a hint of anise, fresh herbs and spicy cedar. Hand-picked, 25% whole bunches, the balance destemmed, open-fermented, 14 days on skins, matured in French oak, (10% new). A very powerful wine in the context of the Upper Yarra, although Willowlake Vineyard is the oldest vineyard in the Upper Yarra. It rides high, wide and handsome on its pile of red and black fruits. Left field for its district and vintage, but will richly reward the patient. Drink by 2030.

Fruit is from the Southern Valleys. Mostly from Yarrum vineyard and smaller parcels from Omaka Valley. Destemmed berries go into open-top fermenters with small proportions of whole-bunch inclusion. Matured in French oak barriques, 30% new, for 11 months. Black plum, Bing cherries and a hint of boysenberry. Tonka bean, cracked peppercorns and tree bark. Quite a tactile wine; the pleasure is in the finesse of tannins and fine lines of acidity. Black cherries bloom out in the middle palate, with some stone fruit, too. Oak is savoury and the wine finishes with a slight peppery, floral freshness. Drink by 2030.

A fine Pinot Noir from the Denmark region of Western Australia and well packaged, love the label. The colour here is a crimson/garnet with a sapid nose of florals, redcurrants, rose petals, mushrooms, aniseed and liqueur cherry notes with hints of undergrowth. A cushiony texture, quite seductive, with silky tannins and immense length complemented by some cleansing acidity on the finish. Now for the next half dozen years. Drink 2024-2030.

One stylish young Pinot, marrying the right amount of weight and richness with elegance. Attractive summer fruit basket aromas in red cherry, cranberry and redcurrant with lifted dried flower florals and spice. A fine almost delicate rendition of Pinot Noir: upfront, red fruited and spiced with textural qualities, before finishing on a sour cherry, morello cherry note. Woodsy spiced oak provides the pulse of this enjoyable, easy drinking wine. More of a short-term as opposed to long-term proposition in the cellar. Drink 2024-2028.

Medium to full-bodied, with ample richness on the palate, it reveals notes of ripe berries, turned forest floor, and toasted baking spice, and it has a classic feel, with good structure and a long finish. Drink it over the next few years. 15,000 cases were produced.

Bright, cool and airy aromas include those of various red berries, anise and a whiff of herbal tea. There is equally good freshness and energy to the lighter weight flavors that are not as dense but finer while displaying good if not special length on the slightly lean finish. This should reasonably better flesh out if held for a few years first. Drink through 2027+.

Pink purple, offering the most beautiful bouquet of crushed rose petals. Mixed with a few fresh red cherries, medium plus body, at the moment quite a firm structure behind, but goodness me this is going to be a beauty later on. Very persistent. Drink from 2027-2034.

An elegant, pure, ripe and airy nose combines notes of red and dark pinot, anise, violet and rose petal. The vibrant and lilting yet solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors display excellent length on the saline-inflected, firm and impressively persistent finale. This is terrific and while it's certainly firm, there is so much supporting sap that it could be approached young if desired. Lovely juice. Drink through 2028+.

An emperor would be pleased with the intensity of this purple robe. The fruit is the most concentrated to date, and picked at the perfect time. Heady, intense, perfectly judged raspberry. This is spectacular. Not over the top, ripe tannins, just the right point of acidity, and excellent persistence. Guillaume speaks of delicacy and I can see what he means despite the Boillot style which is too intense to be designated delicate.

Fresh aromas include those of red and dark berries, earth and a whiff of the sauvage. These days it is Bourgogne from Côte de Beaune plus a touch of village Santenay, aged in one, two and three year old barrels. Very dense purple, almost black in the centre. The bouquet is very concentrated yet not over the top. There is a really fresh intensity through the middle which is quite important given the darkness of the raspberry and black cherry fruit, plus quite firm tannins. Not easily accessible but with a really impressive density.

Deft but not imperceptible wood influence surrounds the overtly spicy aromas of violet, tea, red and blue pinot fruit and a whiff of mandarin orange peel. The wonderfully fresh and vibrant medium weight plus flavors possess a gorgeous texture on the saline, youthfully austere and mouthcoating finish. This is clearly built to age, yet the balance is so fine that it could very likely be enjoyed on the younger side. Drink 2034+.

The 2019 Echezeaux Grand Cru opens in the glass with aromas of cherries, black raspberries, sweet oil tones, licorice and orange oil. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, its broad, textural attack segues into an ample, lively mid-palate, concluding with a long, flavorful finish. Sourced from En Orveaux, this is only the third vintage Boillot has produced of this new cuvée. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Here the pure and ripe nose offers yet another level of spiciness that includes clove, anise and sandalwood that adds breadth of the aromas of black raspberry, violet, rose petal and tea. The super-sleek, intense and mineral-driven flavors possess excellent delineation while delivering outstanding length on the classy, focused and balanced finale. One of my favorite wines in the cellar is the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, a lovely cuvée that wafts from the glass with notes of plums, rose petals, sweet berry fruit, raw cocoa and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, bright and lively, it's sapid and concentrated, with refined tannins and a long, saline finish. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Another very dark purple and a little bit of heat on the nose, but this is more restrained and less voluptuous than the Volnay Fremiets. Gorgeous energy here, with aromatics of dried roses, Guillaume suggests, but more vibrant. Very intense at the back of the palate, now with raspberry and blackcurrant notes, very good structural tannins, and fine length.

A markedly more floral nose slowly reveals its aromas of cool and very pure red currant and spiced plum scents. The medium-bodied flavors possess a simply gorgeous mouthfeel along with fine detail before concluding in a mineral-driven and youthfully austere finale. The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets offers up aromas of plums, cassis, orange rind, petals and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated, it's bright and fine-boned, concluding with a long finish. Produced from almost 60-year-old vines, this is a long-time fixture of the range. The 2019 Volnay Chevrets 1er Cru has a more backward nose compared to the Fremiets, darker fruit with a pastille-like quality. The palate is well balanced with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity with that pastille leitmotif returning on the elegant and pure finish. This Volnay is refined and approachable, but I suspect it has the legs to give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2023 - 2040.

The middle weight flavors offer a step up in volume as well with a more sophisticated mouthfeel that carries over to the detail, moderately stony and equally saline-inflected finale. Robin Tedder MW purchased the High Garden Vineyard after recognising its potential for producing immaculate Pinot Noir. High Garden is the highest vineyard in Gibbston Valley, the coldest sub- region of Central Otago. Planted 20 years ago with a combination of clones on 100% schist soil, the High Garden vineyard is an equilibrium of extremes. Unforgiving rocky soils, high altitude and steep slopes, these are conditions not for the faint of heart but ideal for those seeking the holy grail of Central Otago Pinot Noir. Yields from the site are comparable to DRC’s Grand Cru Romanee-Conti Vineyard and the style of winemaking is focused on letting the site shine with no enzymatic additions, fining or filtration. Jenn Parr of Valli fame and 2020 NZ Winemaker of the Year heads up the winemaking team with Gary Crabbe managing the viticulture.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
