While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

A beautiful nose of sliced strawberries, crushed cherries, violets, grated nutmeg and a hint of white pepper. Some hibiscus, too. Supremely vibrant and perfumed with fine tannins that run the length of the medium-bodied palate. Textural. Ground spice and fresh fruit are intertwined, providing wonderful depth and complexity. So long as well. Seamless balance. Superb. Sustainable. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

JamesSuckling.comThe 2020 Pinot Noir reminds me of walking into a cathedral - that quiet, cool hush that falls as you walk through its doors. This is harmonious, supple, unshowy and unforced. Hailing from old vines and delicately textured despite the abundance of fruit concentration. Refined tannins with the finest of gravelly textures, akin to licking a stone. Scented yet restrained, with a fragrance of sweet red fruit, tea leaf and cedar spices with persistent acidity that carries it. Very complete and already approachable. Drink 2023-2038.

Deep dark red colour with black shaded edges and a vibrant red to dark red hue. Alluring scents of violets, red to dark cherries, strawberries, red plum and anise sail out of the glass with fresh herb, light forest floor and spicy cedar notes ensuing. Rich and intense in its flavour yet light, tense and focused, the palate sees an expansive wave of delicious red to dark cherry, strawberry and plum fruits fan across it like a peacocks tail. Still youthful and tightly coiled, lively fresh acidity and a well integrated yet muscular tannin structure form the framework.
Superb power and depth yet simultaneously showing great restraint, this will slowly evolve over the years into what should be one of Ata Rangi’s best Pinots yet.

A complex wine from the outset with gently reductive notes and modern oak spice threading into fresh cherry, spiced bread, rose, forest wood and blood orange, as well as darker cherry notes. The palate tells the full story. This displays real power and definition with clear-cut and powerful tannins. The intensity of the red-cherry fruit is impressive and the way it occupies the finish with length and uplift is the thing that defines great pinot noir per se. Strong vintage. Drink over the next decade.

JamesSuckling.comAta Rangi's 2019 Pinot Noir is the whole package. It has a piercing, focused nose, offering clarity of fruit and the backing support of lightly spiced French oak. Reminiscent of fresh yet sweet cherry fruit and woody herbs on the palate, it also reveals a savory tobacco and game note that's oh-so-Martinborough. The wine sits comfortably in your mouth, like a ball being gently cupped. It delivers excellent concentration, and the fine, powdery tannins coat the palate, leaving you licking the inside of your mouth and experiencing the texture of river stones. The finish is long, fresh and fragrant. Drink 2023-2036.

Rebecca Gibb MW – VinousThe 2019 vintage was a great year for New Zealand Pinot Noir, and this is a knockout. Here, whole-bunch fruit gives a strawberry liquorice approachability but there is an elegant structural frame to support its development. Aromas of red cherry and incense linger through a concentrated yet ethereal palate of grenadine, rosehip and tart plums, enlivened by deft oaking, mouthwatering juiciness and supple tannins. 2018 Ata Rangi Pinot NoirMartinborough, NEW ZEALAND$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2021-2029)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinProduced from only the oldest parcels on the estate, the 2018 season was one of the warmest experienced at Ata Rangi. A drier than usual November and very warm December led up to regional temperatures breaking records in late January. This created a good buffer from the wetter and cooler weather that appeared at the back end of the season. Grapes were therefore picked pleasingly ripe and in great condition. Fermentation took place with 35% whole bunch inclusion and was then matured for 11 months in French oak of which 35% was new.
Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Showing terrific intensity, perfumed violet like scents lead the way morphing into red to dark cherry, red plum, strawberry and subtle anise. Subtle notes of vanillin cedar, forest floor and spicy fresh herbs then follow on. Rich dark cherry, plum and strawberry fruits are both caressing in their feel and also seductive. Bright fresh acidity and stern yet polished tannins play their roll to provide a great framework. Superb power wave and structure with complexing elements of graphite, smoked meats, earthy black olives, forest floor and spice lying underneath. Long yet tightly knit finish.

It was a cooler, wetter year as I recall, or certainly it was the couple of weeks I spent in Wellington and Martinborough in January that year.
Straight off, I like this vintage. It’s kind of cool and minty, but with a rosy perfume, smoky brown spices, and something like sarsaparilla over a typical red cherry base. Tight, gently sappy, savoury and autumnal, with a distinct earthy/mineral feel, a persistent fine rasp of kitten’s tongue tannin, and a long sweet tangy orange and spice laced finish, firm stroke of tannin carrying it on. Well sophisticated. Yes. Drink 2021-2032+

2024 Bannockburn Serré Pinot NoirGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinBannockburn Vineyards was founded in 1974 by Stuart Hooper, who envisioned producing Australian wines to rival the world’s best. Situated in the Moorabool Valley near Geelong, the estate spans 26 vineyard blocks across diverse soils of volcanic debris, ancient seabeds, and limestone. Now among the oldest plantings in the region, Bannockburn is celebrated for its close-planted Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and other varieties, grown with organic principles and crafted with minimal intervention to reflect purity of site. Remaining family-owned, the estate continues to balance heritage, sustainability, and innovation, producing wines of depth, character, and enduring quality.
The 2024 Serré Pinot Noir comes from Bannockburn’s iconic close-planted block, established in 1984 and extended in 1986, now certified organic. Planted to own-rooted MV6 at 1.2m x 1.2m spacing, it is believed to be the oldest high-density Pinot Noir vineyard in Australia. With north–south row orientation and complex soils of clay over weathered basalt and limestone, the site is inherently low-yielding and consistently produces wines of depth, power, and longevity. The fruit was hand-picked, fully destemmed, and fermented on skins for 10 days before pressing to French oak hogsheads, 40% new. Following natural malolactic fermentation in spring, the wine matured undisturbed before blending and bottling in February.

Planted in '84 and extended in '86; certified organic in '21. 100% destemmed and matured in French hogsheads (40% new). A medium-deep, crimson ruby. Exotic aromas of intense, brambly red and black fruits intermingle with dark rose, blood orange and a little leather. The medium-bodied palate is simultaneously concentrated yet beautifully balanced with ripe, persistent and supple tannins rounding out a seriously good wine to drink over the next 10–15 years at least. Drink 2025-2035.

Philip Rich - James Halliday's Wine Companion“Serré, planted in 1984 and extended in 1986, certified organic in 2021, is planted to 1.2m x 1.2m vine spacing, MV6 clone Pinot Noir on own roots.”
The thing about this wine is the length of its finish. It’s quite stunning. It’s a super-savoury style with earth, sap, beet and decayed rose characters swimming through red cherry, poached strawberries and rhubarb. Oak is a minor player here though there’s a nuttiness to the aftertaste, and a (gently) velvety aspect to the mouthfeel. This wine is in desperate need of another 3-5 years in bottle but the length of the finish says it all in terms of its quality. Drink 2028-2033+.

All the sites have volcanic loam and dark clay over a limestone base and are planted to various clones, mainly MV6 with a smattering of the Dijon (or Bernard) clones 114, 115 and 777. Hand-picked fruit from each block is fermented separately with 20% whole bunches and a small portion of carbonic used. The wine was then pressed to a combination of hogsheads and puncheons (20% new) for a period of 10 months maturation before blending.
Supple, complex and expansive, this is superb example of Geelong Pinot Noir.
Semi translucent dark red colour with black tinged edges and a light red hue. Alluring aromas of cherry, rhubarb and strawberry eloquently sail through the nostrils with a perfumed like intensity. Dried herb, forest floor, game and spicy cedar notes also chime in to make a very complex sniff. Light yet supple and expansive across the palate it features moreish red to dark cherry, rhubarb and strawberry fruits which are interwoven with dried herb, forest floor, subtle game and spicy cedar elements. Refined, seamlessly integrated tannin structure with a gentle tang to the acidity enlivening what is a powerful yet elegant Burgundian like finish.

I really like where the Bannockburn wines are at right now.
I guess that you’d call this light but its length and general insistence is right up there. Indeed over the course of 24 hours this just built and expanded in the most impressive of ways. It’s a minerally pinot noir, smoky and spicy, with red cherried flavour run through with herbs and twigs and undergrowth. In its infancy, now, it somehow manages to be quite remarkably complex; it will only add from here. Certainly it’s light but this is an outstanding pinot noir. Drink 2024-2032+

From vines planted 1976 to 2007 on conventional and close plantings; primarily MV6, with some 114, 115 and 777 clones. Hand picked, wild fermented with 20% whole bunches including some carbonic maceration. The bouquet is at once very expressive and complex with purple and red berries, and high-toned Asian spices, the palate following in the footprints of the bouquet and first-up savoury fruits. An emphatically very good pinot. Drink by 2037.

Bannockburn has never really been out of form but I get the feeling that winemaker Matt Holmes and team have the ship about where they want it to be, now.
This is a beauty. Fragrant and attractive from the outset but then expansive on the palate as well. Earth, twigs, root vegetables and cherries with woodsy spice notes rippling throughout. Tension and flow, texture and tannin. There’s a smoky meatiness to the aftertaste, mixed in with decaying red roses, and it’s most attractive way for the wine to sail out. Drink it now, drink it later; it will deliver. Drink 2023 - 2030+

Jeni Port - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (January 2021)It’s certainly complex. Put it near your nose and scents of potato, sweet beetroot, twigs, cherries and assorted herbs all come at you, along perhaps with earth and a certain volatility. Sweet, nervy beetroot is the one to remember though as it continues on into the palate and beyond, aided by a crush of purple flowers, cherry-soaked twigs and an orange-like tang. It’s hard to know what to make of it all; time is likely to be kind, but it’ll be a bumpy ride along the way. Drink 2022 - 2026+

Notes straight from Matt Holmes, winemaker at Bannockburn: ‘Primarily MV6 on own roots, along with 114, 115 and 777, planted in 1976, 1997 and 2007. Budburst was in line with long term averages (September); a dry and moderate season became warmer after Christmas and ripening accelerated to a slightly early harvest: picked 24/2-7/3/2019.’ The extra level of detail in these notes is much appreciated, I have to say.
Love the firmness of this. The impression of confidence. This has a weight to it in a varietal sense, a freshness too, a composure. This is bold with red and black cherry, beet, dry spice and stem, the fruit ripe but not sweet, the spice more earthen than roasted. It’s still evolving on the nose but the palate has all the credentials. Hold this. It’s going to evolve beautifully. Drink 2023 - 2030+

The 2024 De La Terre Pinot Noir is drawn from a close-planted 1.78-acre block established in 2007 to predominantly clone 777 with a portion of 114. Densely planted at 8,333 vines per hectare, the vineyard combines a flat section with north–south orientation and an adjoining east-facing slope, both rooted in dark clay over weathered basalt and limestone. Hand-picked fruit was fully destemmed and fermented on skins for 10 days before pressing to French oak hogsheads, around 25% new. Made from own-rooted MV6 pinot noir planted in '76 and therefore the oldest pinot vines on the property. This is a superb wine with which to celebrate Bannockburn's 50th anniversary vintage. A bright ruby hue. With its core of mainly red fruits, rose petal and subtle spice scents, there is a palpable energy that's hard to resist. There’s polish to this wine, and a meatiness, and savoury inputs aplenty, and a long confident push through the finish. It’s Bannockburn pinot noir to a tee. Red cherry, tonic water, rhubarb, undergrowth and woodsmoke characters run into rust, steel, earth and cedar. There’s a umami aspect to this wine; indeed it runs right through it. An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
