Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. Established in 1988 this tiny vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir (5.5 hectares) and Chardonnay (1 hectare) and is located several kilometres inland from the coast near the entrance to the Apsley Gorge national Park north-west of Bicheno. The vineyards unique situation near the entry to the gorge brings breezes in the afternoon which have a distinct cooling effect which means this vineyard is typically one of the last to harvest in Tasmania with harvest usually being around the first week of May.
Since 1999 winemaking has been undertaken by owner Brian Franklin who also does vintage each year in Burgundy with Philippe Charlopin (himself mentored by his friend Henri Jayer) in Gevrey Chambertin, and is helped here in Tasmania by young French winemakers including Philippe Charlopin’s son Yann.

Dark cherry and dried herb aromas sail out of the glass followed by some rhubarb, hints of anise, forest floor and spicy cedar. Ashton Hills Piccadilly Pinot Noir is blend of fruit from a handful of grower vineyards around the Ashton Hills estate. Some whole bunch fruit (30%) was included in the ferments with maturation taking place in seasoned French oak for a period of 9 months. 2021 was widely considered to be an excellent vintage across South Australia and the Piccadilly Valley was no exception with healthy, balanced vines producing a crop with impressive flavour and concentration.

Fermented with 30% whole bunches, matured in French oak for 9 months. In the dark and brooding class of pinot, with undergrowth, autumnal leaves, dark berries, woodsy spices and sage. The amount of whole bunches has been decreased from 2020, a good sign, bringing an element of added complexity rather than sharpness. A strong, firm, exciting young pinot. Drink by 2028.

A lower-yield year with prolonged ripening and coolness alongside. It's a svelte and meticulous pinot noir, tightly coiled around a strongly minerally profile with brisk acidity dragging the wine long and to a distinct, persistent finish. There's tart red cherry, some smoky spice elements, a touch of forest floor and brambly blackberries in the mix, clove as a gentle indicator of oak seasoning and an array of exotic souk-like aromatics and flavours lending complexity. The wine is quite understated in its profile but delivers a strong sense of structure and tension, length and control. It's a very fine pinot noir leaning beautifully into its more savoury flex. Utter charm is the result. Drink by 2038.

The 2021 Pinot Noir definitely reflects the vintage. Its good color and abundance of gravelly tannins display the smaller berried, smaller vintage. Its bright fruit, intense concentration and plentiful acidity accompany primary red fruit flavor, with an impressive show of ample black tea leaf-like tannins. It's a wine for the long haul that draws out on the extended finish. To be released in 2024. Drink 2025-2039.

The 2021 Pinot Noir is vibrant on the nose and totally precise and focused. The acid spools right from the front of the palate and has a mobile, agile way about it. The season may have had its challenges, but the wine is effortless, natural and shapely. It's great. The 40% whole bunch here sits well within the red fruit and creates a capacious mid-palate, without an impact of stalky flavor. Superb. A real pleasure to drink. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Ata Rangi's 2019 Pinot Noir is the whole package. It has a piercing, focused nose, offering clarity of fruit and the backing support of lightly spiced French oak. Reminiscent of fresh yet sweet cherry fruit and woody herbs on the palate, it also reveals a savory tobacco and game note that's oh-so-Martinborough. The wine sits comfortably in your mouth, like a ball being gently cupped. It delivers excellent concentration, and the fine, powdery tannins coat the palate, leaving you licking the inside of your mouth and experiencing the texture of river stones. The 2019 vintage was a great year for New Zealand Pinot Noir, and this is a knockout. Here, whole-bunch fruit gives a strawberry liquorice approachability but there is an elegant structural frame to support its development. Aromas of red cherry and incense linger through a concentrated yet ethereal palate of grenadine, rosehip and tart plums, enlivened by deft oaking, mouthwatering juiciness and supple tannins. Produced from only the oldest parcels on the estate, the 2018 season was one of the warmest experienced at Ata Rangi. A drier than usual November and very warm December led up to regional temperatures breaking records in late January. This created a good buffer from the wetter and cooler weather that appeared at the back end of the season. Grapes were therefore picked pleasingly ripe and in great condition. Fermentation took place with 35% whole bunch inclusion and was then matured for 11 months in French oak of which 35% was new.
Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Showing terrific intensity, perfumed violet like scents lead the way morphing into red to dark cherry, red plum, strawberry and subtle anise. Subtle notes of vanillin cedar, forest floor and spicy fresh herbs then follow on. Rich dark cherry, plum and strawberry fruits are both caressing in their feel and also seductive. Bright fresh acidity and stern yet polished tannins play their roll to provide a great framework. Superb power wave and structure with complexing elements of graphite, smoked meats, earthy black olives, forest floor and spice lying underneath. Long yet tightly knit finish.

There’s so much to this wine. It is a pinot that really speaks of quality tannin, fresh and quite concentrated fruit flavors and a layered, succulent, fleshy and rich, dark-cherry finish. One of the best value wines on the planet, hands down! Drink now. Screw cap.

Sourced from the oldest parcels of fruit, the fabled Abel clone, allegedly smuggled from Burgundy in the mid 1970’s, makes up to 40% of the blend. Maturation took place in French oak (35% new) for a period of 11 months.

Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a bright crimson purple hue. Perfumed aromatics of violets, red and dark cherries and ripe strawberries laced with hints of anise overlay subtle game characters and spicy cedar. Light in body the palate has restrained power that will fully flourish with time in the bottle. Supple, yet fresh and elegant in its mouthfeel the palate features flavours of ripe red and dark cherries, strawberries, some gaminess, spicy cedar and light earth. Slightly dryish finish with bright acidity and tightly grained tannins providing excellent structure. Long aftertaste of spicy red and dark cherries, strawberries, an earthy meatiness and light cedar.
    Cellar 8-10 years.

This has all the cherry and spice and perfume that defines this consistently stunning pinot noir, as well as a sense of immense freshness. The palate has deceptive lightness and tannins that are supple and caressing and that kick fresh and expansive out through the finish. Succulent and elegant. A great vintage for this wine. Drink now. Elegant, supple and very vibrant pinot noir, with seductively-layered floral, red rose, cherry, red fruits, dried herb and mixed spice flavours. Very long and linear wine that demonstrated real power delivered with great subtlety. A wonderfully pure pinot noir with a distinctive house/vineyard style and a proven ability to age graciously. Semi translucent dark red colour with tinges of black to the edges and a bright light red hue. Intensely perfumed the nose offers up violet laced aromas of ripe cherry, red plum and strawberries followed by whiffs of anise, forest floor and spicy cedar. Quite compact but with good underlying power, the palate has a savoury flavour profile of spicy red to dark cherries, strawberries and subtle anise which are intermeshed with forest floor, some meaty elements and earthy cedar. Finishes very spicy with bright acidity which together with dryish, slightly chalky tannins contribute to a tense, structured mouthfeel. Long red to dark fruit conclusion with plenty of spice chiming in. Requires some patience.

It was a cooler, wetter year as I recall, or certainly it was the couple of weeks I spent in Wellington and Martinborough in January that year.
Straight off, I like this vintage. It’s kind of cool and minty, but with a rosy perfume, smoky brown spices, and something like sarsaparilla over a typical red cherry base. Tight, gently sappy, savoury and autumnal, with a distinct earthy/mineral feel, a persistent fine rasp of kitten’s tongue tannin, and a long sweet tangy orange and spice laced finish, firm stroke of tannin carrying it on. Well sophisticated. Yes. Drink 2021-2032+

This outstanding Pinot Noir is drawn from Bannockburn’s entire spectrum of vineyards (planted in 1976, 1997 and 2007), including fruit from the iconic, close-planted blocks. All the sites have volcanic loam and dark clay over a limestone base and are planted to various clones, mainly MV6 with a smattering of the Dijon (or Bernard) clones 114, 115 and 777. Hand-picked fruit from each block is fermented separately with 20% whole bunches and a small portion of carbonic used. The wine was then pressed to a combination of hogsheads and puncheons (20% new) for a period of 10 months maturation before blending.

Supple, complex and expansive, this is superb example of Geelong Pinot Noir.

Semi translucent dark red colour with black tinged edges and a light red hue. Alluring aromas of cherry, rhubarb and strawberry eloquently sail through the nostrils with a perfumed like intensity. Dried herb, forest floor, game and spicy cedar notes also chime in to make a very complex sniff. Light yet supple and expansive across the palate it features moreish red to dark cherry, rhubarb and strawberry fruits which are interwoven with dried herb, forest floor, subtle game and spicy cedar elements. I really like where the Bannockburn wines are at right now.
I guess that you’d call this light but its length and general insistence is right up there. Indeed over the course of 24 hours this just built and expanded in the most impressive of ways. It’s a minerally pinot noir, smoky and spicy, with red cherried flavour run through with herbs and twigs and undergrowth. In its infancy, now, it somehow manages to be quite remarkably complex; it will only add from here. Certainly it’s light but this is an outstanding pinot noir. Drink 2024-2032+

Bannockburn has never really been out of form but I get the feeling that winemaker Matt Holmes and team have the ship about where they want it to be, now.
This is a beauty. Fragrant and attractive from the outset but then expansive on the palate as well. Earth, twigs, root vegetables and cherries with woodsy spice notes rippling throughout. Tension and flow, texture and tannin. There’s a smoky meatiness to the aftertaste, mixed in with decaying red roses, and it’s most attractive way for the wine to sail out. Drink it now, drink it later; it will deliver. Drink 2023 - 2030+

Batches of pinot noir from different blocks, wild fermented with 20% whole bunches. Matured 10 months in French hogsheads (25% new). A wine of real gravitas and presence, the '21 reflects a most impressive year. Abundant, enticing aromas in pristine red fruits, maritime herbs, humus and dusty beets. The palate fairly bristles in fruit freshness and energy, the tannins pricking the tastebuds and laying the foundation for a long life. Oak? Yes, it's evident in the texture and the binding but totally integrated. Drink by 2033.

Wild-yeast fermentation (10% whole bunch) with approx 14 days on skins, 12 months in French oak hogsheads (20% new). Nothing shy about De La Terre. Front and centre with a riot of pinot fruit, full of energy and joie de vivre. The fragrance is all about spices, red and blue berries, forest floor and autumnal shades. Medium bodied, warm and free flowing. Generous in tannin, sporting a sweet spot of confection, licorice and dark chocolate. Drink by 2030.

It’s certainly complex. Put it near your nose and scents of potato, sweet beetroot, twigs, cherries and assorted herbs all come at you, along perhaps with earth and a certain volatility. Sweet, nervy beetroot is the one to remember though as it continues on into the palate and beyond, aided by a crush of purple flowers, cherry-soaked twigs and an orange-like tang. It’s hard to know what to make of it all; time is likely to be kind, but it’ll be a bumpy ride along the way. Drink 2022 - 2026+

Notes straight from Matt Holmes, winemaker at Bannockburn: ‘Primarily MV6 on own roots, along with 114, 115 and 777, planted in 1976, 1997 and 2007. Budburst was in line with long term averages (September); a dry and moderate season became warmer after Christmas and ripening accelerated to a slightly early harvest: picked 24/2-7/3/2019.’ The extra level of detail in these notes is much appreciated, I have to say.
Love the firmness of this. The impression of confidence. This has a weight to it in a varietal sense, a freshness too, a composure. This is bold with red and black cherry, beet, dry spice and stem, the fruit ripe but not sweet, the spice more earthen than roasted. It’s still evolving on the nose but the palate has all the credentials. Hold this. It’s going to evolve beautifully. Drink 2023 - 2030+

Close-planted MV6 planted in '84 and '86, vinified separately, one batch whole bunch, the other destemmed, pressed to French hogsheads (20% new), matured for 12 months before blending. The perfumed bouquet of red berries, rose petals and spice leads into a wondrously fine and elegant palate. It is the product of many things, including the great southern Vic '17 vintage. 12.5% Alcohol.
    Drink by 2037.

Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a brick red hue. Lifted dark cherry and plum aromas laced with dried clove and smoky cedar emerge from the glass over a backdrop of gamey forest floor characters and spicy dried herbs. Supplely textured dark cherry flavours are overlaid by prominent stalky dried clove elements, smoky cedar, subtle forest floor characters and spicy dried herbs. Slightly dry on the finish with velvety tannins. Medium power and aftertaste. The strong stemmy whole bunch characters will be too much for many.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
