Southern Rhone

This vast region offers delicious Grenache-based reds, often blended with Cinsault, Shiraz & Mourvedre that are densely coloured, fleshy, supple and flavourful. Mid weighted and possessing a youthful freshness, the intensely flavoured palate is blessed with ripe raspberry, plum, red liquorice and cherry fruits. Also chiming in are infusions of herbs du Provence, incense and spicy pepper. Polished tannin structure with a delectably juicy aftertaste.

A blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah which sees no oak. Fruit is sourced Mont Redon's own vineyards located across the river from Chateauneuf du Pape, near Lirac. It also includes a proportion of declassified Lirac fruit. Opaque dark red black colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Inky black raspberry and liquorice aromas are followed by some earth, faint incense and spice. Medium weight and slightly chewy in its mouthfeel the palate has savoury ripe dark cherry and dark raspberry flavours with traces of liquorice also present over some incense infusions and spice. Bright finish with slightly dryish but otherwise fine grained tannins and an aftertaste of ripe dark cherries, dark raspberries, subtle liquorice and spicy incense infusions. A charming Cotes du Rhone with plenty of freshness and delicious bright fruit.

This estate makes a fine Côtes du Rhône, and the 2015 Côtes du Rhône (75% Grenache and 25% Syrah) has classic Provençal herbs, sweet cherries and garrigue aromas and flavors in a fruit forward, beautifully textured style. It’s a no brainer for drinking over the coming couple or years.

The name for this wine originates from the 45th North parallel, which runs two kilometres from the domaine’s cellars near Tain L’Hermitage. Sourced from vines that are 40+ years old on average it is made from a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah and is aged in a mix of large older barrels (20%) and stainless steel tanks (80%).

The dark red black tinged core shows good depth with a dark red black tinged hue. Elevated ripe black cherry, black raspberry and liquorice scents are trailed by earthy incense characters and pepper. Medium bodied, generous black cherry and liquorice flavours sit over scorched earth, infusions of incense and spicy pepper characters. Dryish finish with slightly chewy but ripe tannins. Aftertaste of peppered black cherries and liquorice, scorched earthy incense and spice.

Laced with earth and spice, its juicy bouquet of cranberries, blood plums and cherries precedes a long, richly flavoured and textural palate of crunchiness and brightness. Red and blue fruits framed by mouth-coating tannins drive long and impactful towards a faintly meaty, savoury and liquorice-like finish that becomes more mineral with aeration. Delicious!

One of the gems in the vintage is the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Mon Aieul, which in 2006 was 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah. Elegant, seamless and weightless, yet with full-bore intensity in its kirsch liqueur, garrigue and licorice-driven aromas and flavors, this sensational 2006 provides that rare mix of both hedonistic and intellectual pleasure. It’s singing today, but will keep for another decade.

The Grenache vines are over 70 years old and come from two sites, one planted on red clay and the other on galets (smooth river-worn pebbles). The younger Mourvèdre vines are planted on sandy soil. The wine is fermented for 30 days in concrete vats, then matured for 10 months in a mix of concrete tanks and large old 50 hL oak foudres.

Domaine Saint-Damien is run by Joel and Amie Saurel whose family has been tending vineyards for four generations, dating back to 1821. Until relatively recently they sold all of their grapes to negociants. In 1998 they brought on consulting winemaker Philippe Cambie and haven’t looked back.

A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre aged in oak foudre’s for 12 months. Totally opaque dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Lifted black cherry and blackpepper scents are overlaid by new leather followed by dried meats, scorched earth and spicy dried herbs. Medium to full bodied, the palate is well endowed with rich black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry fruits. Leather, scorched earth, dried meats and blackpepper elements ensue. Good flesh to the mouthfeel finishing with ripe chewy tannins that provide structure. Excellent power with a long ripe black cherry, liquorice, black raspberry, leather, scorched earth and blackpepper aftertaste.

The 2015 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes offers the most finesse and elegance of the three cuvees, and is slightly less exotic, yet more refined and pretty. Offering lots of strawberry and framboise fruits, loads of cedary spice, full-bodied richness and building, polished tannin, this terrific wine shines for its purity and finesse. Drink it anytime over the coming decade.

Totally opaque dark red black colour with a bright purple red hue. Freshly crushed cherry and raspberry aromas intermix with inky earth, hints of red liquorice, fresh provincial herbs and spicy pepper notes. Juicy and fresh with medium body weight and an inky finish, the palate has vibrant freshly crushed raspberry and cherry fruits overlaying elements of scorched earth, dried herbs and spicy pepper. Bright youthful acidity and slightly chewy tannins with an elegant, medium length conclusion.

Coming from the sea of vines located in the pebbly soils between Vacqueyras and Cairanne, the 2018 Plan De Dieu Vieilles Vignes offers more blue fruits, flowers incense, and peppery aromas and flavors. An 80/20 split of Grenache and Mourvèdre brought up in tank, it’s medium to full-bodied, has light tannins, no hard edges, and is a pleasure-bent, character-filled 2018 that’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate.

Produced from predominately Syrah with a good dollop of Grenache also included, bottling taking place after 8 months of aging. Inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Streaming out of the glass are black raspberry and liquorice scents followed by herbs du Provence, scorched earth and pepper. Rich, juicy and concentrated, the delicious palate is awash with black raspberry, liquorice and subtle ripe blueberry fruits. Notions of scorched earth, infusions of fresh herbs and spice lie underneath. Finishes with slightly chewy tannins, ample freshness and a lengthy aftertaste.

Renown for his Cotie Roties which regularly flirt with 100 point scores, Stephane Ogier is regarded as one of the hottest winemakers in France. His entry level Cotes du Rhone is a brilliant value sourced from vineyards in the Plan de Dieu and Visan with vines aged between 30-50 years old. A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah it’s aged for 10 months in concrete vats.
Rich and Sumptuous yet featuring a robust structure this is an outstanding Cotes du Rhone.
Deep black dark red core with a dark red purple tinged hue. Enchanting the olfactory senses is a heady mix of black raspberry, liquorice and black cherries which are trailed by some scorched earth, incense like characters and peppered provincial herb notes. Rich and concentrated the medium to full bodied palate is saturated with lush black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are framed by a sturdy tannin structure. Ripe, chewy mouth feel with infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and pepper extending across the back half. Boasting superb depth and power it has a long finish that’s deeply fruited and sumptuous yet robust.

Rich black cherry, black raspberry and liquorice fruits engulf the mouth backed by a ripe chewy tannin structure. Infusions of Provincial herbs, subtle scorched earth and blackpepper lie underneath. Excellent concentration and power with a long opulent yet meaty conclusion. Ranked No. 62 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines for 2021 this is a great value.

Yet another new discovery, Tardieu-Laurent is a negociant founded in 1994 as a partnership between Michel Tardieu, (who among other jobs has served as a driver for French Presidents) and Dominique Laurent, owner of a negociant firm in Burgundy. Today Michel Tardieu runs the firm on his own. He takes advice from the enormously influential Philippe Cambie, who also happens to be the Rhone consultant behind most of the 2007 Southern Rhones we've offerred to date. If you've enjoyed our previous shipments, you will be suitably impressed by these wines.
A very spicy peppery Chateauneuf du Pape that delivers great depth of flavour
A blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah sourced from vines up to 80 years old. The wine was aged in one year old Allier & Troncais oak. Opaque dark crimson red colour with dark red mauve hue. The nose displays perfumed aromas of black raspberry, violets, liquorice and spice with a meaty end note. Full bodied, concentrated and spicy palate. Flavours of black raspberry, dark cherry, spice, blackpepper and a touch of earth with a very spicy finish. Super fine grained tannins with long aftertaste of spice, blackpepper and liquorice.

In 2008, they dodged the bullets, providing us with some of the finest wines in what was a difficult vintage for the Southern Rhone, then they came back ever so strongly with the stunning 2009 and 2010 vintages in both North and South.

In 2011, Michel Tardieu describes the vintage as a "summery spring, springly summer and optimal autumn". The prospect of an early harvest waned with a slightly wet and fresher than usual July, hindering Grenache ripening, but when combined with fantastic autumnal weather, greatly advantaging Syrah and Mourvedre. The Northern part of the Rhone valley enjoyed a similar weather pattern and the fresh July turned out to be a blessing for beautifully aromatic Syrah. The wines display vibrant fruit and great typicity.

Given their remarkable quality and consistency, it's no surprise that globally, the wines of Tardieu Laurent are in bigger demand than ever. So much so that the Australian allocations for 2009 and 2010 were dramatically reduced. Quite simply, they're becoming increasingly difficult to procure. Consequently, we've got in early to secure a selection of the 2011s as direct imports. The prices are fantastic but the quantities available are extremely limited and the wines will be sold on a first in first served basis. Don't delay!

A blend of 75% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and 5% Syrah from the oldest vines is the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. It exhibits a deeper color than its two siblings along with copious notes of new saddle leather, roasted herbs, black pepper, lavender, raspberry and black cherry fruit. This medium to full-bodied 2011 should drink nicely for a decade.

Made from 100% Grenache with 100% stems utilized and grown in sandy soils in the La Crau sector, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Speciale reveals classic aromas of kirsch, pepper and earth as well as a full-bodied mouthfeel. It achieved over 15% natural alcohol and was aged in a combination of tanks and old barrels. This outstanding, spicy Chateauneuf should drink well for over a decade.

Abundant notes of melted licorice, kirsch liqueur, and flowers is followed by a full-bodied, seamlessly constructed wine with sensational purity, texture, depth, and length. The bad news is there are only 2,000 bottles. This 2007 should drink well for two decades or more.

Superb and with loads of potential, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, with the Grenache aged in older barrel and the Syrah in new barrels) is more deep and layered than the Cuvee Speciale. Offering up impressive notes of mineral, new leather and smoky black fruits, this full-bodied, layered and textured 2012 has superb mid-palate depth, fine tannin and an all-around concentrated, backwards feel. It will require 3-4 years of bottle age and keep for 15 years or more. Drink 2017-2027.

Offering beautiful purity in its black and blue fruits, violets and spice, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a rounded, supple texture, impressive concentration and juicy acidity. I love it for its core of fruit and approachable feel, and it should evolve gracefully.

Coming from sandy soils, it’s a serious, classic example of Grenache that delivers notions of ground pepper, saddle leather, spice and sweet red and black fruits. Totally opaque black dark red colour with a deep dark red hue. Pronounced aromas of black raspberries, liquorice and some ripe black cherries are entwined with hints of incense, dried meat, earth and pepper. Full bodied, very rich and concentrated the palate oozes succulent black fruit flavours of black raspberries, liquorice and black cherries over a background of incense infusions, lightly scorched earth and spice. Dry chewy finish with a solid base of grippy tannins providing the framework. Outstanding power and depth with a long aftertaste of black raspberries, liquorice, black cherries, lightly scorched earth, dried meats and spice.

Coming in at one-third the normal production due to the decimated Grenache yields, the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah. In addition, since no Cuvee Speciale was made, this cuvee benefited from all the top grapes. Fabulously concentrated, with a textured, medium to full-bodied feel, it offers up impressive black raspberry, cassis, graphite and ground-pepper aromas and flavors. Possessing good acidity and building tannic grip, this beauty has the texture to drink reasonably well on release, yet should have 10-15 years of overall longevity as well.

Inky ruby. Pungent dark berry, cherry pit, cola and sassafras scents, with hints of allspice and woodsmoke in the background. Shows very good clarity and lift on the palate, with juicy blackcurrant, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors fleshing out and gaining sweetness in the mid-palate. Finishes sappy, smoky and expansive, with supple tannins and an echo of vibrant dark fruits and floral pastilles.

A blend of 60% Grenache, 40% Syrah, the Syrah component sourced from 30 year old vines and the Grenache from 60 year old vines. Elevage took place in concrete tanks for 12 months.

Opaque dark red black tinged colour with a bright dark red hue. Lifted spicy dark raspberry and ripe dark cherry aromas are followed by some liquorice, earthy dried herb elements and faint pepper. Juicy dark raspberry and ripe black cherry flavours fill the medium bodied palate with underlying earthy dried herb characters concluding with a spicy finish. Bright acidity and fine grained tannins frame the fruit. Long, lively aftertaste of dark raspberry, dark cherry, earthy herb and spice aftertaste.

The 2016 Côtes du Rhône Les Becs Fins is slightly more forward and charming, with a modern style in its cassis, vanilla bean and blackberry jam aromas and flavors. Possessing both richness and elegance, it’s going to a delicious red that drinks well above its price point.

Opaque black red colour with a bright crimson purple hue. Meaty scorched earth top notes are intermixed with aromas of black cherries, subtle liquorice and graphite. Medium bodied with good richness and a restrained meaty textural feel, the palates initial flavours of black cherries and liquorice are overlaid by dried meats and earth with touches of leather and pepper on the finish. Dry chewy tannins with an aftertaste of black cherries, earth, dried meats, leather and blackpepper. A rustic style of Gigondas.

More firm and structured than the Vacqueyras (which is to be expected), the 2013 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes offers up an array of toasted spice, graphite, licorice and sweet black raspberry fruit. This flows to a medium to full-bodied, firm, structured and focused Gigondas that has enough tannic grip to warrant short-term cellaring. Nevertheless, it has impressive concentration and is a rock-solid effort that will have 10-12 years of longevity.

Bright violet color. Heady, spice-laced aromas of ripe dark berries and cherry, with a suave floral overtone. Fleshy and broad on entry, then more taut in the middle, offering sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors and a touch of lavender pastille. Silky tannins sneak up slowly on the finish, which lingers with outstanding clarity and spicy tenacity. This wine was made entirely with whole clusters.

Opaque dark purple black colour with a bright purple hue. Elevated aromatics of dark raspberries and black cherries laced with hints of liquorice and incense are followed by some scorched earth notes and spice. Medium weight with a fleshy vibrant feel to the fruit, delicious dark raspberry and black cherry flavours fill the palate over some liquorice, traces of scorched earth and spicy pepper. Lively finish with very fine grained perfectly integrated tannins. Medium to long spicy aftertaste of dark cherries, liquorice, a touch of scorched earth and pepper. A charming Cotes du Rhone from the Outstanding 2015 vintage.

Deeply perfumed cherry, raspberry, licorice and Asian spice aromas open up with air and pick up suggestions of candied flowers and smoky minerals. Palate-staining red berry and bitter cherry flavors are lifted and given focus by a core of smoky minerality. Concentrated and seamless in texture, delivering outstanding closing thrust, supple tannins and lingering florality.

Entirely whole cluster, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Speciale still doesn't show a ton of complexity. Matured half in concrete and half in foudre, it does deliver layers of ripe, supple fruit and a lush, creamy texture. Raspberries and blackberries linger on the finish.

Maison Tardieu Laurent has developed a solid following here in Australia in recent years. Their 2007s have been stunning across the board. In 2008, they dodged the bullets, providing us with some of the finest wines in what was a difficult vintage for the Southern Rhone, then they came back ever so strongly with the stunning 2009 and 2010 vintages in both North and South. 2011 delivered fresh, aromatic wines that are drinking well already.

In 2012 the wines across the board are a step above their 2011 counteparts, rich and fruit driven with good concentration. Likened to a lighter styled 2010 vintage, the wines are again vibrant and expressive, with dark fruit and medium to full-bodied richness. While they will be aproachable on release, the best will live for 15+ years.

Given their remarkable quality and consistency, it's no surprise that globally, the wines of Tardieu Laurent are in bigger demand than ever. So much so that the Australian allocations have steadily been reduced in recent years. Quite simply, they're becoming increasingly difficult to procure. Consequently, we've got in early to secure a selection of the 2012s as direct imports. The prices are fantastic but the quantities available are extremely limited and the wines will be sold on a first in first served basis. Don't delay!

More floral and perfumed, the Grenache dominated 2012 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes (fermented with lots of whole cluster and aged all in 1-2 year old barrels) offers plenty of blackberry, blueberry, violets, mint, spice and toast to go with a medium to full-bodied, rich and chewy profile on the palate. Pure, balance and layered, it should be outstanding and drink nicely for 8-10 years, if not longer.

Grenache: the workhorse of the Southern Rhone.

While Grenache has lost favour to Shiraz in Australia, in the Southern Rhone, Shiraz plays second fiddle. Here Grenache remains the basis for beautifully balanced, frequently exuberant reds with a strong Mediterranean influence. Apart from Grenache, twenty two other varieties are permitted throughout the entire Rhone Appellation, though generally no more than ten are employed in blends.

Rhone wine labels and the appellation system.

As in other French wine regions, the Rhone's Appellations d'Origine Controlees (AOCs) rely on sets of rules based around the concept of 'terroir' (the interaction of soil and climate on wine quality) as well as specific local and historic practises. Essentially, the whole system is organised as a pyramid. The further you climb towards the summit, the more restrictive the criteria for production, the more prestigious the terroir and the better the wines should be.

The 'Cotes du Rhone' AOC is the base of the pyramid. The second level is the 'Cotes du Rhone Villages' AOC which follows slightly different rules. Out of ninety 'communes' allowed to produce Cotes Du Rhone Villages, eighteen of them are allowed to step up the hierarchy ladder with the mention of the village name on their labels (e.g. 'Rasteau', 'Vacquerays' etc.), provided they respect the more restrictive yields as well as other analytical requirements at harvest. Finally, at the top of the pyramid, we find the local appellations, for which the term 'Crus' is the norm. Here yields generally cannot exceed 35Hls/Ha and strict conditions for cultivation apply. Chateauneuf du Pape forms the apex of the Southern Rhone's appellation pyramid. The extraordinary and long-standing reputation of its wines is such that in the 14th century, the Papacy in Avignon favoured the village as their summer residence, expanding the vineyards to suitable surrounding areas. To this day, each bottle of Chateauneuf bears the coat-of-arms of the city of Avignon, with its two crossed keys, those of Saint Peter, the first Pope. Seven Popes later, the rigour established in those times has survived the centuries. In fact, Chateauneuf became the working model for France's earliest appellation laws. Under the rules, 13 different varieties are permitted, though Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault dominate over Counoise, Clairette and Bourboulenc.
