Primitivo Quiles is the oldest bodega in the Alicante region, with the family producing wine since 1780. Alicante is the driest Spanish wine region, with 300mm or so rainfall per year. Despite the warm weather and low rainfall the wines retain good freshness and finesse due to the elevation and cool nights from the continental climate. Moscatel Romano (known elsewhere as Muscat of Alexandria, Lexia and Zibbibo) played an important part in the history of Alicante, as the coastline served as a prominent trade route where these durable (fortified) wines would more comfortably survive the journey.
This wine is produced in the "Mistella" method where pressed juice is fortified with neutral brandy spirit leaving 200g/l of residual sugar, making it ideal as an aperitif on ice, or served with cheese and fruit. The aroma is fragrant and floral with orange, straw, billy tea, and raisin, with a good balance of acidity and sweetness.

Following the successful release of Carpano Antica Formula vermouth, we had several customers searching for another of Carpano's creations, Punt e Mes.

Like Antica Formula, Punt e Mes is a vermouth of outstanding quality, but features a dramatically different flavour profile. Whilst the two share a similar, sweet luxurious palate entry, Carpano's back palate is sweet, soft and luscious, while the back palate of Punt e Mes offers very bitter flavours similar to Campari.

Best consumed in cocktails that require some bitterness and spice to balance sweetness, or with ice and soda before dinner.

The 2019 Vintage Port Nacional is a field blend, mostly Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz, aged for 18 months in old wood. It was bottled May 4, 2021, with 100 grams of residual sugar and 19.4% alcohol. This opened rather differently than the regular Noval Port this report, showing more open and expressive fruit, more cherries and even more power as they both aired out. The aromatics are excellent here too, but more fruit driven. When I came back to both some two days later, this brilliant and graceful Nacional made the wonderful regular Noval seem clumsy. It's the difference in styles, really, and reasonable minds might differ in preference, but this Nacional has more precision and more finesse. It is brighter and laser-like focused with an expression of fruit that seems so pure that you can almost think they used a spoon to fill the bottle after just crushing the grapes. The regular Noval, by contrast, seems rounder, more full-bodied and richer, albeit less defined.
They both have a fair share of power. On first taste, the regular Noval seemed less powerful. Two days later, it seemed more powerful, but the Nacional fruit was always more interesting and far more intense in its character. Three days later, there was certainly still plenty of firmness on the Nacional finish. If the structure is excellent, the fruit is sensational. Three days after opening, the fruit had not budged an inch, showing nothing but exuberance and youth. The juicy finish of this very fresh Porto seals the deal. True, it was in bottle only about two months or so when tasted, but its quality is not in question. If you want a collectible and can afford it, this is the easy pick. If neither of those is true, the regular Noval offers way more bang for the buck. Both have significant aging potential. As promising as the regular Noval is, however, this seems to have a lot more upside as well as a lot more "wow" factor.
I have given this wine a drinking window that begins in about 10 years, but of course, that is a minimum for this as well as the regular Noval. These days, Ports are more refined, so you can theoretically start sooner, most of the time. In truth, it will need 20 years before it is firing on all cylinders. Purists will suggest longer. Drink 2029 - 2075.

Last but certainly not least, the 2019 Quinta do Noval Naçional Vintage Port comes from Noval’s un-grafted vines and undergoes essentially the same maturation as the regular Noval. It is more backward on the nose compared to the Noval, demands time to open, before eventually revealing black cherries, tar, tobacco and clove. A touch of smoke and eucalyptus make an appearance with time. The palate is absolutely sublime with a perfectly judged line of acidity; a Naçional that is full of tension and energy, finely chiselled tannins and an enthralling crescendo towards the spicy and peppery finish. This is quite profound. Drink 2033-2070.

A chewy and beautiful young Nacional with grapey character and lots of depth and layers of tannins. Crushed black berries and black cherries. Tannic finish. Needs 10 to 15 years to soften.

Pure perfection in Port, the 2019 Vintage Port Nacional is riveting stuff in every sense, and I certainly can't imagine it being any better. Coming from a single parcel of older vines and a field blend (it's primarily Touriga Nacional) brought up in older wood, it's one of those ports that brings incredible intensity, richness, and power while somehow staying perfectly balanced, pure, and light on its feet, with its fruit, alcohol, and structure just flawlessly integrated. It's also incredibly complex, even at this young stage, offering red, blue, and black fruits as well as sandalwood, Asian spice, dried flowers, iron, black olive, and graphite on the nose. While the base Noval closed down quite quickly, this showed consistently over the three days I had the bottles open, never showing any sign of fatigue or oxidation, and given its incredible balance, it was the wine I chose to pour a small glass of each evening as well. While the 2020 is all about power and richness, this is an utterly complex, compelling, insanely good Port that I wish I could pour for every reader. While it offers ample pleasure today (count me in the group that enjoys young Port), I would hide any bottles I might have for at least 7-8 years, and it should have 50, 60, 70 years of longevity? This beauty will unquestionably outlive most of us today. Drink 2030 - 2090.

Pitch black in colour with a very deep dark red black hue. Potent morello cherry, black cherry and liquorice allsorts aromas are complimented by distinct marzipan, brandy spirit and iron notes. Incredibly concentrated and powerful, every corner of the palate is completely drenched with liquorice, morello cherry and blackberry fruits which are framed by muscular yet integrated tannins. Notions of marzipan, liquorice allsorts and spice lie underneath. Luscious yet grippy in its feel it concludes with amazing richness and great persistence. Still very youthful and firmly structured this requires some long term ageing.

The 2019 Vintage Port is a field blend aged for 18 months in old wood vats. It was bottled May 4, 2021, and has 100 grams of residual sugar. It was in bottle only a bit more than two months when tasted, but it seems quite brilliant, even so. Very concentrated, it adds controlled power and coats the palate. Tasted with some other 2019s, this certainly stood out for both concentration and power. It touches all the bases in terms of expressive fruit and structure, finishing dry and seriously. It seemed balanced enough to drink young, but that would be a mistake. For one thing, it steadily tightened as it aired out. It also increasingly showed gorgeous eucalyptus-laced aromatics. Two days later, it was notably more astringent. Four days later, it was very firm on the finish and better overall. In fact, that was a far better showing than on day one. This is plainly built for the long haul. I would expect nothing less from a fine Noval Vintage Port. It became more focused and precise as well. This needs the rest of this decade, at least, in the cellar to show better. Then it will develop well for decades and hold indefinitely. Frankly, it won't show everything it has in even 10 years, where I have the "start drinking" window, so if you have a lot more patience, that would be useful. It will be more interesting around 2035-2040. This is a powerful beauty, well justifying Noval's tendency to declare most every year. Drink 2029-2075.

Noval has released 2,780 cases, equivalent to 15% of production, of the 2019 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port. A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão, Sousão, Tinta Roriz, foot-trodden in lagares with 18 months in oak barrel. This is well defined on the nose, with dusky black fruit laced with graphite and clove. A serious rendition when compared directly with the more “playful” 2019 Passadouro; hints of liquorice, eucalyptus and boot polish emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with vivid red and black fruit, liquorice and black pepper, crisp acidity with a structured finish. This is a fresh, tensile Noval that will age with style. Drink 2032-2055.

Aromas of dried cherries, blackberries and cassis with dark licorice, chocolate and graphite undertones. Full-bodied, with a ripe and mellow sweetness, and ultra-fine, silky tannins that flow through the palate for minutes. Lots of grip. Such an elegant texture, with great finesse. Long and seamless. Better from 2030.

Coming from a cooler vintage, the 2019 Vintage Port is nevertheless powerful, full-bodied, and concentrated, with lots of structure and density giving it a tight, backward, yet incredibly impressive feel. It's actually more concentrated than the 2018, with a touch more baby fat as well, yet has a similar level of complexity. Red and black plums, cassis, iron, chalky minerality, chocolate, black olive, and licorice are just some of its nuances, and unlike the 2018, which showed even better with air, this closed up rather quickly and was more enjoyable on Day One than Day Three. Nevertheless, this is magical stuff that just needs a solid decade of bottle age. As with the 2018, it spent 18 months in old wood tanks and was bottled with around 100 grams of residual sugar. Drink after 2033.

Nutty and intense, like peanut brittle reduced to liquid form—but with less than half the corn syrup. Pale tawny with a hint of green at the rim. Very nutty nose with the pungent creaminess of well-aged sherry and just enough sweetness to compensate for the dry treacle character. Much drier than Harvey's 12-year-old Cream sherry and with more rancio character. An amazing amount of pleasure for under a tenner. Seppeltsfield is a national treasure for its fortified wines and every time I drive past my eyes light up at the sight of the old gravity-fed winery and the memory of the smell in the fortified cellar fills my wee noggin. I love the place. A tawny with 21 years under its belt in front of us here. Medium-tawny in the glass with the usual head-spinningly complex array of aromas and flavours that make us flip our lids for this stuff. Candied citrus fruits, fruitcake spices, mahogany, brandy snaps, Christmas cake, toffee, rancio, roast and candied nuts and layer upon layer of spice and comforting whiffs of warm, woody tones and leather. Viscous, unctuous and wildly complex, the transposition of aroma to flavour completes and then starts multiplying, reaching a crescendo before slowly fading at a glacial pace with an amazing length of flavour and sense of freshness. Wonderful. Drink 2023 - 2053.

If anything in the fortified realm nudges perfection, this is it. Typical aromas of molasses, orange verbena, roasted walnut husk, tamarind, clove and the medley of everything available (and not) in the Moroccan souk. Yet what makes this wine is the balance between decadent sugar levels and the undercarriage of savoriness, manifesting as bright acidity and chewy, unctuous, moreish rails. You know you are drinking something akin to liquid diabetes, but you want the next glass! Drink or hold, as this is indestructible.

21 years in barrel. Fortified with some brandy. I remember 2002 as being a long cool vintage in the Barossa. Atypical, you might say.
Salted toffee, orange peel, plenty of XMAS spice and an almost seaweed/rancio character. It’s viscous and warming, roasted nuts, sticky toffee pudding and burnt sugar, orange liqueur, plenty of length, and a distinctly salty/spicy/nutty finish of fine length. Excellent, and pretty good value when you consider it’s 21 years old!

Super saturated pitch black in colour with an inky black dark red hue. Tightly packed, the nose is playing its cards close to its chest with liquorice, blackberry and morello cherry scents trailed by marzipan, subtle raisin, vanillin confectionary and spicy spirit notes. Rich, energetic and tense, decadent black cherry, liquorice and blackberry fruits are underscored by beautifully integrated warm spirit and a firm tannin structure that provides plenty of muscle and grip yet remains perfectly balanced. Notions of marzipan, black plum and spicy raisins make an appearance on the back half. Magnificent intensity and power with an exceptionally long and luscious yet fresh finish that carries a sturdy underbelly.

The 2017 Taylor's Vintage Port comes from their three quintas: Vargellas, de Terra Feita and do Junco, picking commencing at Vargellas on September 1, the earliest since 1945. Now this boasts a bold and more flamboyant bouquet vis-à-vis the Croft with layers of blackcurrant, blueberries, violet and allspice. Wonderful definition here and as it ratchets up through the gears with aeration manages to maintain impressive delineation. The palate is medium, rather full-bodied. The first impression is one of freshness, completely disguising that summer’s dryness and warmth, a disarming finesse built around the frame of tannins that would have been impossible years ago. It is a silky-smooth Taylor’s, one of the most polished 2017 Vintage Ports with energy and tension flooding through the finish. Aristocratic as ever, totally Taylor’s, yet still translating the growing season with aplomb. Total production is 11,500 cases. Drink 2030-2080.

The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend aged for approximately 20 months in wood. It comes in with 100 grams of residual sugar. A step up (or two) on the 2016, this shows fine depth, more focus, vivid fruit and serious power. It's not particularly thick, austere or astringent, but this is built for the long haul. It is potentially a great Taylor's, effortlessly combining brilliant fruit and structure. It tastes great now (today, it is far more vivid than its Vinha Velha sibling), but the power makes this hard to drink today. So, have some patience. It will need some time, probably a lot more than indicated, and will likely last longer than indicated as well. As noted in the accompanying article, I don't see much point to impossibly long drinking windows. At some point, reevaluation is required.
At the moment, it seems to be a step up on the Vinha Velha, although that is far more closed. I'd pick this today, but in time, both undoubtedly will have more tales to tell. Great young Ports go through many phases, and both are great young Ports. When ten-year anniversary tastings are done, this will have to be on the shortlist of greats to reconsider to determine how the best in the vintage are meeting expectations. Drink 2030-2077.

Tio Pepe Fino en Rama is the maximum expression of biological ageing, the unfiltered version of this world famous Fino Sherry. Winemaker Antonio Flores monitors hundreds of barrels from different sub-soleras. Together with his assistant and daughter Silvia he earmarks particular casks for having exceptional depth, complexity and balance. As an en rama sherry, there are minimal interventions and hardly any filtering, staying as close as possible to the wine in the bodega. It shows Tio Pepe in its most natural state, with more intense aromas and flavours.

Act fast, therefore, to grab this year's release, which showcases the trademark elegance and intensity that have made this wine so famous and sought after. The world’s best-selling Fino, uncompromisingly dry, always served cold, fantastic with food – especially savoury nibbles such as Jamon Iberico, chorizo, olives, nuts, Manchego cheese and bread and oil.

The story behind Tio Pepe, one of the world's great fino sherries is a colourful one.Translated, “Tio Pepe” means “Uncle Joe.” Joe was a wine trader who raised his young nephew, Manuel Gonzalez Angel after Manuel’s father died leaving a wife and seven children. Manuel himself later became a prominent exporter of sherry and his cellars were frequented by his benefactor who was particularly partial to one barrel of fino. Delighting in this, Manuel had the words “Tio Pepe” branded on the butt ensuring that it would always be available for when his uncle visited. However, news spread quickly and soon everyone wanted to dip into Uncle Joe’s reserve. There was only one solution - the rest is history. Today annual production has soared to a staggering nine million bottles!

Tasting note: Made from 100% Palomino grapes and aged for an average of seven years using the traditional Solera system. Deep pale golden colour. Pungent bouquet with yeast dominating. The perfectly balanced palate is full and round displaying mixed nuts and attractive flor yeast character. Very dry, crisp clean finish that lingers long in the mouth. Remains a classic in its genre as an ideal aperitif. Serve chilled with shellfish.

Try it over ice as an aperitif or in The Natty-Cano 16% Alc./Vol.

The impressive line-up is opened with the pale-colored NV Manzanilla Deliciosa, which is produced with Palomino grapes from the Miraflores vineyard and aged for five years under yeast. It is a finer version of La Guita, easy to drink, with a sweet note of apples in the nose, a polished and gentle palate, ending with a saline touch. Drink 2013-2014.
I’ve often called Valdespino “the Romanee-Conti of Jerez.” Well, there, I’ve said it. To me they represent quality and tradition at the very top of the Sherry hierarchy. The winery, soleras and brands are old, registered in 1875, but with documentation about their commercial and winegrowing activities going back to the 13th century. Their recent history starts in 1999, when Jose Estevez purchases the company from the Valdespino family. Today Valdespino is the jewel in the crown of the Grupo Estevez, which also includes Real Tesoro and La Guita, who stock and age 35,000 botas of Sherry and own 800 hectares of vineyards, 56 of which come from the Pago Macharnudo, on pure white albariza soil, one of the best vineyards in the Marco de Jerez, and 17 hectares from the heart of Macharnudo are still fermented in bota today and form the core of brands like Inocente, Tio Diego, CP or Cardenal. All the wines were carefully and slowly moved to the new facilities of the Grupo Estevez on the outskirts of Jerez, where they continue their development under the supervision of Eduardo Ojeda, technical director, winemaker, who as a wine-lover is very aware of his role preserving these old soleras, wines and traditions.

The NV Fino Inocente must be one of the few wines in Jerez that is still fermented in 600-liter American oak botas, which is an incredible amount of work compared with fermenting tens of thousands of kilos of grapes (or even more) in a big stainless steel tank. This method was the norm of yesteryear, but is so labor intense that it was discontinued in most wineries, and gives a big diversity of wines, as each barrel has its own character, which contributes to the complexity of the blend. Furthermore, the bottled wine is on average 8 to 10 years old. One other thing that makes it apart from other Finos is that the grapes are exclusively from the high part of the Macharnudo vineyard, so this is a single-vineyard Fino. The nose is very complex, showing the effect of the long lees contact: chalk, dried hay, aromatic herbs and salty almonds. The palate is full, but at the same time elegant and balanced, powerful and fine, with the texture of a Meursault rather than a Puligny. A very complex wine, that manages to be both powerful and elegant. Inocente is great value for money. Drink 2013-2016.

The NV La Guita Manzanilla has always had a very strong and marked character of brine, green olives and mustard seeds, with an overall sweet sensation. The medium-bodied palate is precise, very dry and intense, with some brine and rancio flavors and great length. The quality of this wine has increased notably in the last few years, and represents very good value and is a great introduction to Manzanilla, as availability should not be a problem with 2,000,000 bottles filled per year. As an advantage, the back label shows the month and date of the bottling, and should be drunk within a year or two. Drink 2013-2014.

Although the official name of this winery created in 1852 in Sanlucar de Barrameda is Hijos de Rainera Perez Marin, it’s better known by the name of the only wine they make, Manzanilla La Guita. Moreover, the company has changed hands a number of times and since 2007 belongs to Grupo Estevez who also own Valdespino and Marques del Real Tesoro, but the names remain. La Guita, and its characteristic bottle with a piece of string attached (guita has two different meanings, it’s slang for cash, but it also means string, which in fact is the root for the word guitar) is a very strong brand locally and it’s been in existence since 1908. La Guita is a truly wine from Sanlucar: not only is the wine aged for an average of four years under flor in an impressive 15,000-barrel solera spread over two different cellars in Sanlucar, but the grapes are also from Sanlucar, mainly from the Miraflores vineyard.

One that proclaims to be the crème de la crème of PX’s and with six centuries of sherry production under their belts, Valdespino can lay claim to being one of the oldest sherry houses in the region. In a process called Soleo, after harvesting, the grapes are sun dried for two weeks to concentrate the sugar and turn the grapes into raisins. After partial fermentation of the must the wine is fortified and then enters the soleras where it’s aged for between 10-12 years in American oak casks.

After 20 plus years in the making Warrabilla have finally been able produce a Grand Muscat, the fortified that Rutherglen is famous for. Together with his assistant winemaker, daughter Amy, Andrew Sutherland Smith has crafted an outstanding Grand Muscat that is a fitting tribute to his family heritage. With an average age of 18 years, the only bad news is that production is tiny with only 200 bottles scheduled to be released each year.

Very deep sienna brown colour with a distinctive olive green hue. Heady aromatics of honeyed raisins, Christmas cake and rancio characters overlay hints of marmalade, toffee and marzipan with perfectly integrated spirit. Magnificently rich and concentrated with a viscous textural feel akin to motor oil the palate is layered with luscious Christmas cake, honey, dried raisins, marmalade infusions, rancio characters and marzipan. The wine is fortifed on skins which extracts a bit more tannin and tends to dry out the finish so it doesn’t end with a cloying sweetness. This lost gem has been on the market but off the radar since 2001 when the price was set at $20. Grab a bargain before the price goes up. Deep sienna brown colour, with green olive edges. Wonderful aroma of honey, raisins and fine old brandy. Rich luscious palate. Flavours of raisins, honey and marmalade superbly married to very fine brandy spirit. Clean finish, with exceptionally long aftertaste. (375ml bottle).

The non-vintage Museum Reserve Muscat is exotic, full-bodied, rich, and sweet. It spent 7 years in wood, and was bottled from a solera system. This amber-hued, rich, unctuously-textured effort boasts luscious aromas and flavors of marmalade, figs, chocolate, melted caramel, toffee, and prunes. Once again, Australia proves this country is hard to beat when it comes to their fortified after-dinner wines, which still sell for a song.

A superb fortified wine with the base wine having an average age of 15 years. Brilliant sienna brown colour with deep olive green hue. The nose displays strong nutty rancio top notes, followed by hints of orange marmalade. The palate is rich, beautifully balanced with fine brandy spirit. Long rancio flavours are overlaid with walnut, orange and raisin cake. Dry finish, followed by a long rancio, honey and walnut aftertaste.

    First tasted, May 2001:
Yet another exceptional fortified wine from Yalumba. The base wine is over 40 years old, the finished wine has an average age of 15 years. Deep sienna brown colour, with distinct green olive edges, showing its great age. The nose is a touch restrained at first, but yields subtle aromas of caramel, prune and honey, with a strong rancio character over a very fine brandy background. The palate is rich and luscious with very distinct nutty rancio flavours. Excellent length, with very dry finish and long lingering aftertaste of honey and caramel.A wonderful experience, at a very modest price. (375ml bottle).

The medium amber-hued non-vintage Museum Reserve Antique Tawny, which has had more than 15 years of oak aging, is a sensational fortified that could easily be confused with a high quality, 20- to 25-year-old Tawny Port. Delicious notes of prunes, sweet raisins, over-ripe strawberries, and caramel soar from the glass of this incredibly intense wine.

Antonio Sanchez Prieto founded Bodegas Toro Albalá in 1844, in the village of Aguilar de la Frontera. By 1922, José Ma Toro Albalá restored the former electric power station of Aguilar where he moved the winery, and still is today. The Montilla-Moriles region is famous for Sherry, to create this fantastic concoction, the grapes are sun-dried into raisins before being pressed and fermented. Due to the incredible concentration of the juice, the wines are notably sweet but also wonderfully fresh. Don P.X. is their renowned Sherry, full of rich and deep flavors of raisins, figs and dates - the perfect pairing could be anything from blue cheese, to vanilla ice-cream, undoubtedly a must try.

Super dense black sienna brown in colour with a very deep sienna brown olive green tinged hue. The viscosity of this wine is such that it clings to the walls of the glass with an engine oil like consistency. Completely intoxicating the olfactory senses is a kaleidoscope of honeyed raisins, Christmas cake, walnuts, burnt toffee, fig and spice aromas that are totally mesmerising. Amazingly rich, concentrated and viscous, the texture of this palate staining elixir is so thick and heavy you could almost eat it with a spoon. Mouth coating flavours of honeyed raisins, molasses, figs, Christmas cake, melted toffee, subtle dried nuts and spice engulf the palate. Warm and mellow spirit background with a stunningly long finish that’s sweet, luscious and oil like in its consistency. The aftertaste lingering for minutes after it’s been swallowed. A magical, mind blowing PX.

The amazing, pedal to the metal/full throttle/balls to the wall, sweet 1910 Pedro Ximenez Solera is a dark amber-colored, full-bodied, unctuously-textured beauty that should be sipped and savored slowly and carefully at the end of a meal with a plate of cashews. It is remarkable stuff. The price is not high for what it represents.

The NV Piedro Ximénez Solera 1910 comes from a separate Solera blend going back to 1910. It's on another level compared to the 1926 and has another level of viscosity and opulence that needs to be tasted to be believed. Massive coffee, toffee, burnt caramel, and spice all emerge from this motor oil-like wine that has off-the-charts richness and depth, while staying reasonably light on the palate. As with the Solera 1927, it’s best enjoyed in small sips at the end of a meal.

Devotees of Fino Sherry have entered into a mass conspiracy ofsilence. Hardly a word is spoken and only occasionally a pressannouncement is made that another gold, silver or bronze medalhas been accumulated. Its packaging belongs to the 1950's - butno one is objecting. This is the Sherry bargain of Australia andlet's hope it remains so. The Fino Sherry is matured in smalloak casks using the solera system. Bright pale straw colour. Thenose is very pronounced with strong nutty flor charactersfilling the nose right into the temple. On the palate the floryeast character is dominant over strong nutty flavours -mouthfilling - very warming yet bone dry. Sensational length offlavour and concentration with clean dry finish and profoundlylong lingering nutty aftertaste. Extraordinary value for money. And you thought Auntie Jean was just a sweet old lady - wrong,Auntie Jean has been the custodian of an Australian treasure fora long time, that's why she smiles a lot!\Z

It's finally back, after an absence from the market place for about two years. The story goes that a winemaker left a vat valve open over a weekend and emptied the reserve of the fino into the drains! The present whereabouts of this genius are not known, but given a similar problem at Pipers Brook, earlier this year, he may be working in Tasmania!Made from the Classic sherry varietals, Pedro Ximinez and Palomino. This wine displays pale straw colour and looks very fresh indeed. Great Finos should be freshly bottled! Superb lifted flor yeast nose with some nutty background notes. The palate has delightful intensity and concentration of flavour. The nutty flor yeast flavour has just a hint of saltiness which is carried through to a bone dry finish and very long yeasty aftertaste. A superb aperitif!

This is Angoves companion to the superb fino dry flor, however, it lacks the concentration and persistence of the fino. Made from fully ripened white grapes whose identity remains unknown. For all of its deep sienna, onion brown colour and olive rim, the wine remains unconvincing. Why you might ask? The colour reflects age and green edges only come with considerable age. Also it's the nose that suggests that this is a wine made by a process called jero paga, rather than one left in oak casks and matured by a solera sherry process. Why do we say this? On the nose there is a burnt caramel aroma, hints of toffee and burnt sugar, and not enough intensity. Old wines aged naturally have an unmistakable intensity which only time can bestow. On the palate it is again, the caramel that dominates the flavour with a hint of rancio and some brown sugar in the background. Soft, warm finish, smooth and clean. Enjoy with raisin cake!

Much of the Fino and Manzanilla Sherry that reaches Australia from Spain, winds up sitting in warehouses for a year or two and subsequently develops deep straw colour and loses its freshness. This shipment of Manzanilla has been specially bottled for us and directly shipped. This sherry is wonderfully fresh and has a depth of flavour and intensity that could only be matched by a barrel sample at the Bodega. Now a firm word for all the wine buffs that think sherry is a boring drink for little old ladies. Without any reservation we urge you to buy at least a bottle - it is one of life's drinking pleasures. Pale watery like colour - indicating its fresh bottling. Magnificent uplifting intense nutty flor yeast nose with remarkable fresh overtone. The palate flavours are extremely intense and the length and depth of flavour is outstanding - salty cashew, almond and flor yeast flavours abound - perfectly dry and totally mouthfilling. Clean, very dry finish and exceptionally long nutty salt and yeast aftertaste. Enjoy now the total freshness.

The second of the old sherries tasted and one degree higher in alcohol at 21%. Pale tawny olive green colour. Very strong rancio nose with uplifted old spirit, leather, walnut and roast hazelnut aroma. The palate is full bodied with concentrated, powerful flavours. Very dry and salty with nutty rancio flavours - very pronounced with a hint of acetone at the back of the palate, yet not apparent on the nose. The acid levels are remarkable - crisp and very lively contributing to the exceptionally long roast almond and salt aftertaste.
