The 2013 Coutet has one of the most complex aromatics you will find this year - a smorgasbord of citrus fruit, lime zest, orange blossom and white peach that is beautifully interwoven with compelling mineralite. The palate is extremely well-balanced, very intense and linear right from the start, with wonderful tension toward the finish that exhibits just a hint of spice. In other words, this is everything you expect from a great Coutet.

Powerful, with intense apricot, tangerine and pineapple notes forming the core, all wrapped with toasted almond, shortbread and sweetened butter notes. Has loads in reserve, with serious cut still to fully show itself.

Wow. This is superb with great botrytis character from white pepper to dried mushrooms. Dried fruits such as apple and lemons. Full body, very sweet yet tight and racy. Needs three or four years to open.

One of the superstars of Barsac, the wines are typically noted for their elegance and style rather than weight and richness. At 38.5 hectares in size, Coutet is one of the largest vineyards in the region, with plantings consisting of 75 % Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrel of which 50% are new with further ageing in oak for 18 months.

Intense aromas of honey, spice and candied lemons. Full-bodied, very sweet and dense, with a syrupy mouthfeel and a long finish. This is very concentrated. Almost classic quality.

Vibrant, with a singed almond frame sprinting along, this offers nectarine, white peach and star fruit notes. Mirabelle plum and pineapple details echo through the finish. Very long, boasting terrific range.

Very rich, deep aromas of lemon verbena, peach, cinnamon; enticing. Rich, dense and suave palate, with a honeyed richness to the spicy, fresh citrus and apple jelly flavours. A large-scaled Coutet showcasing a hint of passerillage (dried grapes). Outstanding, but I prefer the 2014.

Plump at first, with a praline note around the heather, pineapple and nectarine flavors. Stretches out, with a juicy feel, while orange blossom and white peach accents fill in, imparting lift and cut. This packs a bit of power, but there's lots of buried freshness as well. The finish is seriously long already.

Ripe tropical fruit, vanilla and herbs intermingle with smoky botrytis. Dense, rich flavours of custard and toffee apples, saffron and a hint of noble rot bitterness on the long finish.

The Château Coutet 2014 is a blend of 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle and delivers...cue the drumroll...a whopping 162 grams per liter of residual sugar, the highest level of any Sauternes that I have data for. As you would expect, the total acidity is slightly, but not dramatically lower than its peers at 3.9 grams per liter (compared to say, 4.3 grams per liter at Doisy-Daëne.) This Coutet '14 has a complex bouquet with razor-sharp, minerally, citrus fruit mixed with wild honey and a touch of Riesling-like petrol. The palate is totally convincing. There is a great thrust of rich botrytized fruit sliced through with Coutet’s trademark acidity, despite the spoonfuls of sugar, that lends this such vibrancy and tension. It possesses and almost clinical precision with long persistence on the finish. This is a divine Coutet that may warrant a higher score subject to how it evolves in barrel.

Aromas of pineapple, peach, sage and smoky botrytis have a saline edge. Very lively acidity provides focus to the tactile stone fruit, mango and papaya flavours (only 118 g/l RS).

The Château de Myrat 2014 is a blend of 88% Sémillon, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 4% Muscadelle. At 118 grams per liter residual sugar it has one of the lowest levels, with 4.5 grams per liter total acidity. It seems just a little “simple” on the nose with scents of honeysuckle and beeswax, though my main gripe is that it does not offer the mineralité of its peers at the moment. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry with plenty of pineapple and citrus fruit mixed with light honeyed tones towards the finish. This improves with aeration in the glass, not a million miles away from Doisy-Daëne in style, but with slightly less breeding. With a bit of luck it will land at the top of my banded score.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish pale gold edges and a watery hue. Beautiful nose of honeyed apricots, ripe peaches and lemon butter with traces of marmalade also evident over faint raisin and spice end notes. Rich but not heavy the palate has a delightful vein of freshness running through it that keeps it light on its feet. Flavours of honeyed peaches and apricots are prevalent over some light marmalade infusions, lemon butter and a trace of vanilla. Bright cleansing acidity. Long aftertaste of honeyed peaches, apricots, subtle marmalade and lemon butter.

The 2016 Doisy-Daëne is all subtlety and finesse. White flowers, mint, orchard fruit, lemon confit and a kiss of new French oak add to an impression of elegance. Beautifully layered and open-knit, the 2016 exudes class from start to finish. The mid-weight structure and sense of freshness are incredibly appealing. The 2017 Doisy-Daëne is a little richer on the nose compared to recent vintages, quite pure with acacia honey, melted wax and touches of almond filtering through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, finely judged acidity, borrowing some of the weight usually expressed by Doisy-Védrines to create a very satisfying and opulent finish. It does not give the live-wire tension that is common in this Barsac, but it does give plenty of depth and length.

A wine of real density and weight, the 2017 Doisy-Daëne is positively stunning. It is also likely to require a number of years to be at its best, given its currently reserved, shy state of mind. The 2017 is marked by an almost phenolic impression of structure. There is so much to admire, including the wine's explosive energy, but the best is very obviously still to come. What a wine!

The 2017 Château Doisy Daëne is a seriously decadent, thick, opulent beauty that packs serious sweetness in its canned peach, lime peel, and exotic tropical fruit aromas and flavors. Brilliant pale gold colour with a glimmer of green to the golden edges. Beautifully scented nose of botrytis, honey coated peaches and apricots followed by hints of marmalade, faint lemon butter and spice. Impressively rich with a luscious mouthfeel the palate is shade lighter than the 2014 Coutet yet equally if not more powerful and shows more freshness and tension. Mouthfilling flavours of honeyed peach and ripe apricot fruits drive the palate over subtle infusions of marmalade, candied citrus and pineapple. Perfectly balanced acidity freshens up the finish and gives the wine a sense of vibrancy. This has such a beautiful balm yet again for me lacks some pep. It's not a 2007 or 2001 or 2011. But it's gorgeous. The texture of these wines is so crazily seductive and the power and intensity of toasted blood orange slices is stunning, but it would benefit from a lime soaked twist.

Tangy and fruity with a honey and lemon-rind character. Lots of orange peel, too. Medium to full body and a sweet finish.

This almost dry wine is full of botrytized fruit tones. Well balanced, it is likely to turn into a rich, dense wine as it matures, with ample acidity that shines on the finish.

The 2016 Doisy-Védrines is precise, understated and gracious. Candied orange peel, crème brulee, wild flowers, passion fruit and tangerine are all delineated nicely. The 2016 is deep and resonant on the palate, yet it also retains quite a bit of brightness. Readers who prefer the more understated side of Sauternes will find much to admire.

The 2019 Doisy-Védrines is a light, airy wine with pretty tropical notes and appealing perfume. The 2019 is at an awkward stage, with the oak showing through, but I expect it will be very, very good in time. Weight and texture develops over time here.

The 2019 Doisy-Védrines has an intense nose, though it does not quite have the precision of the Doisy-Daëne. The palate is very well balanced, a little fatter than its aforementioned Barsac sibling, a welcome touch of spice (lemongrass and ginger) surfacing towards its satisfying conclusion. Good potential.

Doisy-Védrines is a 2ème Cru Classé Sauternes property located in Barsac which has been owned by the Casteja family since 1946. The estate’s 27 hectares of vineyards are situated on the highest plateau in Barsac and are planted with 80% Sémillon, 15% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. The yields are painfully low, even by Sauternes standards, producing some of the richest and most full bodied wines in Barsac. Curiously the estate uses the Sauternes AC rather than the Barsac one. DV is their second label.

A Sauternes that offers exceptional value combining intense, lusciously textured, honey drenched fruit with cleansing fresh acidity.

Brilliant straw colour with greenish pale gold edges and a watery hue. Potent aromatics of honeyed ripe apricots and peaches waft from the glass with subtle scents of marmalade, sweet ripe pineapple and spice also evident. Rich, concentrated and lusciously textured yet with a resounding sense of freshness on the finish, the mouth is filled with honey drenched peaches and apricots over a back drop of marmalade infusions and light spice. Concludes with cleansing acidity and a long luscious aftertaste of honeyed apricot, peaches, dried pineapple, notions of marmalade and subtle spice.
    Cellar 5-6 years.

The 2020 Doisy-Daëne, pure Sémillon this year picked at 16hl/ha over three to six tries through the vineyard, presents a well-defined nose that, compared side-by-side with Doisy-Védrines, is actually quite similar in terms of the dried honey, honeysuckle, candle wax and quince aromas that unfurl from the glass. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and such purity on the finish that it endows this Barsac with wonderful weightlessness. Magnificent.

The 2020 Doisy-Daëne is rich, creamy and wonderfully expressive. Lemon confit, marzipan, coconut, dried flowers, apricot and tangerine are some of the notes that build in the glass. All the elements meld together gracefully. Beautifully layered and sensual from to start to finish.

Grilled orange rind, lemon curd, overripe pineapple and spearmint, all coated with honey, create the perfume. The wine is sweet, lush and honeyed, but with a jolt of racy acidity, giving the white peach, yellow tropical fruit and candied orange rind length and vibrancy in the finish.

Rich and powerful, this is a seductive Barsac that has a great balance of acidity and sweetness, nothing too over the top, full of lime zest and mandarin, with tongue-licking slate on the finish. Great stuff, extremely well balanced. A yield of 16hl/ha. 10 months in barrel for ageing followed by nine months in stainless steel.

Full bottle 1,380 g. 100% Sémillon (although there is Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle planted in the vineyard). 16 hl/ha. Picked in three to six passes through the vineyard by experienced pickers. Cask sample. Aged for 10 months in barrel followed by nine months in tank.
Coppery gold colour. Very exuberant on the nose and with dramatic, expressive botrytised fruit on the palate. Very rich but edgy and energetic too. Firm and fresh with a floral note. A modern Barsac! Impressive to have managed this quality and this (relatively) generous yield.

The 2019 Doisy Daëne has seriously intense notes of pineapple upside-down cake, ripe apricots and lemon marmalade with hints of acacia honey, paraffin wax, orange blossoms and preserved ginger plus a waft of marzipan. The 2019 Doisy-Daëne is creamy, ample and resonant in the glass. Wild flowers, ginger, orchard fruit, pear and tangerine oil are some of the many strands that inform the 2019. Rich and yet also wonderfully light on its feet, the 2019 is hauntingly beautiful and impeccable in its balance.

The 2019 Doisy-Daëne is uncharacteristically backward on the nose and demands coaxing, eventually revealing lovely clear honey, quince and sea spray/oyster shell scents. The aromatics on the Doisy-Daene comes racing out of the blocks like a March hare, soaring from the glass with honey, quince and lychee aromas with a sorbet like freshness and vivacity. The palate is supremely well balanced with a heightened level of tension and purity, offering delectable but subtle notes of white peach and apricot towards the beautifully composed, mineral-rich finish. Curiously, it reminds me of a top-flight Mosel Auslese, but what a fabulous Barsac from Denis Dubourdieu!

The 2020 Doisy-Védrines has an elegant bouquet, well defined and perhaps more poised than recent vintages from this Barsac estate. Dried honey, orange pith and light marmalade notes gradually unfurl in the glass, followed later by hints of candle wax and lemon verbena. The palate is well balanced with a lovely touch of orange zest that counterbalances the rich, honeyed fruit, and superb tension on the finish This is a wonderful Doisy-Védrines.

Powerful fleshy exotic fruits - the juice comes in from the first moment and doesn't let up, ensuring the apricot and mango fruits are shot straight through the core of steel. A brilliant showcase of what the soils of Barsac can do. A yield of 11hl/ha, 18 months in barrel. Tasted twice.

The 2012 Doisy-Vedrines has a typically forthright, honeyed, nectarine-scented bouquet that does not quite possess the complexity or nuance of recent successes. The palate is well-balanced with plenty of viscous, tropical-tinged fruit cut through by crisp acidity, though the finish is a little disjointed at the moment. I believe this Barsac will come together during barrel maturation and it will constitute a commendable short to medium-term wine.

Proprietor Olivier Casteja recently became president of Cru Classe de Sauternes et Barsac. He has always been refreshingly honest about the use of cryo-extraction, and in 2012 it was used on one-third of the crop just to ensure freshness in his fruit that were rained on every time they reached the pourri plein stage.

"Did Barsac confirm its upper hand in 2011? Well, readers should look out for excellent contributions from the likes of Chaeau Doisy-Daene and Chateau Climens, but if I had to pick one wine it would be Chateau Doisy-Vedrines, which achieved one of my top scores (incidentally, a view shared by the rest of the group.) Whereas often this Barsac has a richness and unctuousness that occasionally denudes Olivier Castèja's wine of elegance and precision found elsewhere, the 2011 seems to have successfully incorporated these virtues without compromising its generosity and decadence that we all know and love. Load up on this lovely wine and drink and/or squirrel away as you like..." - Neal Martin

Tasted blind at the Sauternes 2011 horizontal tasting. The Château Doisy-Védrines 2011 has a very fragrant, almost floral bouquet with pure honey, quince and yellow flower scents that soar from the glass and embrace you like your favourite aunt. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous texture and superb acidity that really set this Sauternes alight: real tension and a sense of energy here. It just “flows” toward a vibrant, honeyed finish that has only just begun to “motor." This surpasses its showing from barrel and constitutes a magnificent effort from Olivier Castèja and his team.

Brilliant pale gold straw colour with a pale straw hue. Wonderfully intense aromatics of honeyed peach and dried apricot fills the nostrils followed by some marmalade, a hint of quince and spice. Rich, very concentrated and lusciously textured the palate is saturated with flavours of honeyed peach and dried apricot alongside marmalade, quince, subtle toffee apple and cinnamon spice. Finishes clean and fresh thanks to perfectly balanced acidity. Superb breadth and volume with an exceptionally long and persistent aftertaste of honeyed peach and apricot, marmalade and light cinnamon spice.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

Pure, with piercing persimmon, pineapple, white peach and quince flavors. Gorgeous floral notes of honeysuckle and orange blossom form the backdrop, while a heather accent caresses the finish. Overwhelmingly pure in the end, with a finish that sails on and on. Best from 2016 through 2035. 3,500 cases made. –JM

The pineapple, nectarine and quince notes have a lush edge, with bright acidity buried underneath. Still relatively unformed, but the core is there.

Aromas of pear nectar, quince and vanilla complemented by marmelady botrytis. Almost shrill acidity lifts and extends citrus and tropical fruit flavours. This manages the neat trick of being rich and ripe yet refined.

The 2016 Suau has a pleasant honeyed bouquet with hints of orange blossom and marmalade, the second bottle tasted at Domaine de Chevalier expressing a little more exuberance than the first. The palate is well balanced with well-judged acidity. It is not an extravagant Sauternes, but it is certainly pretty and elegant on the finish, plus the tension is such that you'll soon be returning for another sip.

Beautiful, caramelized-citrus and floral-honey aromas make this a very modern Sauternes that neatly combines the honeyed character you expect from the appellation with lovely freshness and a succulent finish that pulls you back for more. Pure semillon, from organically grown grapes. Great value for money.

A ripe and broad style, with a mix of ginger, piecrust, apple chutney, green fig and glazed peach flavors rolling through. Spice and almond hints show on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2036. 833 cases made.

The 2016 Château Suau is a terrific Barsac, offering ample sweetness in its white peach, orange blossom, and white flower-driven aromas and flavors. While it doesn’t have a huge amount of botrytis, it’s pure, medium-bodied, and has good acidity. Drink this beauty over the coming 10-15 years. This is made by the team at Domaine de Chevalier and is well worth seeking out.

The 2015 L'Extravagant de Doisy Daene has a powerful, intense but very pure bouquet laden with acacia honey, peach and quince, yet very defined and not at all overwhelming - remarkable given the richness locked into this Sauternes. The palate is medium-bodied with sensual, rounded, honeyed fruit, plenty of botrytis as you would expect, but leavened with a keen line of acidity. The finish offers peach and nectarine mixed with wild honey and a dash of spice to complete a fabulous wine from Denis Dubourdieu.

A scintillating wine, with apricot, pear and nectarine notes that are rich yet piercing. Heather and jasmine details gild the finish, which is very long and shows serious cut.

A 100% Sauvignon Blanc! ‘It was the first time we ever dared to do it,’ said Denis Dubourdieu. Elegant if reticent nose of lemon jelly, melon and saffron. Extremely rich and concentrated on the palate with a viscous mouthfeel and pure, fresh citrus and sweet spice flavours. Three barriques only were made, with roughly 204g/l residual sugar and 9g/l total acidity. Excellent and racy but lacks the weight provided by Semillon.

Unctuous, with almond paste, nectarine and creamed yellow apple notes forming the core, leading to a finish laced with hazelnut oil accents. This tightly coiled version will take some time to unwind. A likely classic in the making.

Extremely rich, almost decadent, very perfumed wine but with lovely balance and creamy white peach and lead pencil notes that last and last.

The L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne 2014 has a very intense bouquet of wild honey, acacia and orange blossom that soars from the glass. The palate is unctuous, decadent and powerful – completely living up to its name – with layers of honeyed fruit on the long finish. It is like a super-charged Beerenauslese, somehow retaining immense tension and precision on the finish. For hedonists only. Queue up.
