An almost imperceptible hint of SO2 blends with pretty and quite elegant aromas of ripe peach, pear and roasted hazelnuts that slide gracefully into rich, generous and plump medium-weight flavors that possess an attractively textured mouth feel, all wrapped in a solidly intense and persistent finish. 2011 Olivier Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru Pre-arrivalBurgundy, FRANCE$390. 00Bottle$4680.00 DozenBatard-Montrachet shares many similarities with its vineyard neighbour Montrachet, not the least of which the ability to express a Chardonnay of power and intensity only found in these revered sites. While the wines are full and rich, they balance this with great levels of acidity, creating thrilling wines that must be experienced at least once in a lifetime.
Other Reviews....
Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Bâtard-Montrachet 2011 from Olivier Leflaive was poured after Anne-Claude’s and it was not to be overshadowed. It has a wonderful bouquet – real minerality and poise here, not intense but outstanding detail and focus. The palate is crisp and defined, struck through with very good acidity. Yes, it is tight at first, but there is a real peacock’s tail of lime, nectarine and apricot toward the persistent finish that makes you want to go back and take another sip.

Neal Martin - eRobertParker.com Nov 2014Discreet wood toast notes serve to highlight a relatively elegant, pure and refined nose of soft floral, white peach, pear and subtle spice hints. There is excellent volume and mid-palate density to the round, rich and quite generous big-bodied flavors that possess ample dry extract that coats the mouth on the balanced and focused finish. This is certainly bigger and a bit richer than the Bienvenues but not any longer or more complex. A qualitative choice.

Brilliant pale straw colour with very distinctive greenish tinge around the edges and watery hue. The nose displays aromas of white peach intermixed with cashew and biscuit followed by some very light toast. Light in body weight but possessing a nice textural feel the palate has flavours of delicate white peach, cashew and citrus with some light dried honey characters on the back palate. A very mild hint of reduction still allows the notes of roasted nut, acacia blossom, citrus rind and various white orchard fruit scents to be appreciated. The agreeably textured, delicious and relatively generous medium weight flavors culminate in citrusy and persistent finish that is not especially dry.

While there is a hint of matchstick present it doesn't materially impede the appreciation of the very Meursault nose of hazelnut and white orchard fruit aromas that precede the rich, delicious and cool flavors that possess both good detail and fine dry extract levels that coat the palate on the tension-filled, linear and slightly lean finish. There is enough underlying material present that this should flesh out with a few years of bottle age.

Most of the area on the mid and upper slopes are classified as Premier Cru. Style can vary across each vineyard, but generally the wines are fruit rich and very complex, with hints of spice and flinty mineral notes. A classic White Burgundy profile.
The vineyard plantings of Dents de Chien are miniscule in size, mainly owing to the broad covering of naked rock allowing for only small parcels suitable for vines. Part of the vineyard was also carved off into the Montrachet vineyard, and prior to the 1936 classification this whole plot was considered part of Montrachet. Wines from here have the depth and length more closely associated with their Grand Cru vineyard neighbours, and it is truly a top class Premier Cru site.

2011 Olivier Leflaive Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot Pre-arrivalBurgundy, FRANCE$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenWhile much of the soil within Chassagne-Montrachet is better suited to red wine production, the best wines from the commune are whites planted on suitable hillside plots. Indeed, Chassagne-Montrachet is home to three Grand Cru vineyards including a share of the grandest of all, Montrachet.
Most of the area on the mid and upper slopes are classified as Premier Cru. Style can vary across each vineyard, but generally the wines are fruit rich and very complex, with hints of spice and flinty mineral notes. A classic White Burgundy profile.
Other Reviews....
An iron note graces the apple, lemon and buttered pastry flavors in this vibrant white. Taut and steely, with a lingering stony finish. A bit sharp, but will appeal to fans of acidity. Best from 2016 through 2024. –BS

Wine SpectatorA gentle touch of wood frames an expressive nose of herbal tea, resin and mostly yellow orchard fruit aromas.
There is fine richness to the intense and full-bodied flavors that are blessed with ample mid-palate fat and good depth on the complex and balanced finish. This is very Morgeot, with its generous proportions and good depth if limited refinement.

Burghound - Allen MeadowsSmoky and stylish- lots of trendy Burgundian flintiness, crakling smoke on the finish, great fruit definition. Smooth, succulent apple fruit and a touch of toffee to round the palate out. Excellent.

Wine Spectator – Bruce SandersonThe wine has so much structure and tension. It is wound up and tight, full of acidity as well as the potential for rich fruits. A steely texture powers up the concentration of this wine, which has a strongly toasty component at this stage. Drink from 2018.

2013 Olivier Leflaive Rully 1er Cru Les ClouxBurgundy, FRANCE$54. 99Bottle$659.88 DozenClosure: CorkBy now we are getting used to small quantity vintages in Burgundy, with the last healthy crop levels back in 2009. Vintages from 2010 through to 2014 have been anywhere from 20-50% down on the average, although there may be some hope to come with 2015. Inevitably this has had an impact on prices, but we are trying to help with more direct shipments such as this offer from Olivier Leflaive.
We've long admired the wines from this house, having seen them across many vintages and communes, they're always high quality and expressive of origin. Our offer focuses on the latest release whites from the 2012-2014 vintages, and if there is a common thread to these vintages it's reduced yields leading to wines with concentrated flavours, and fresh acid structure.
"Two thousand fourteen appears to be a very good, classic crop of concentrated, fleshy wines that will offer good early appeal and age well." - Antonio Galloni
2014 is shaping up as a top year, while the reds have come up well it's the whites that are particularly excellent. Each commune was also very consistent, from Chablis in the north, to the Macon in the south, they all produced wines of great balance, intensity and freshness. They are also very transparent, showing the true character of their parcel of land, with the quality of the top cru wines clearly evident.
"2013 burgundies I have tasted to date are generally delightfully terroir-specific... wines for true burgundy lovers" - Jancis Robinson
Freshness and aromatic intensity are the main themes of the 2013 vintage whites. Hail damage reduced the crop considerably but did allow grapes to ripen fully in a generally cool year. The resulting wines are quite powerful, with strong aromatic fruit and fine balancing acidity. Similarly 2012 has produced some very powerful wines, perhaps more dense in fruit profile than 2013, but equally fresh and ageworthy.
Based in the Cote Chalonnaise, the wines from Rully are often seen as fresh and easy drinking, but the 1er Cru wines can offer more than enough stuffing to warrant a few extra years of cellaring. Les Cloux vineyard is close to the town of Rully with an easterly aspect.

2016 Oremus (Vega Sicilia) Tokaji Aszu 3 Puttonyos (500ml)Tokaji, HUNGARY$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkTokaji Aszú is a noble sweet wine made by blending dried and noble rotten berries to a dry base wine. Taste and quality of the Aszú mainly depend on the number of hods (puttonyos) filled with dry berries (25 kilograms each), which are added to a cask (Gönc type, 136 liters) of dry base wine. Consequently, the proportion between aszú berries and dry base wine is about 1:1 for a 6 puttonyos Aszú. Aszú Eszencia is made with the same process, and is a classification above 6 puttonyos where the ratio of noble dry berries to wine is more akin to 7-10 puttonyos. This is not to be confused with Tokaji Essencia which is a fermentation of just the free run juice of the dried noble berries as they rest in the vat.
