The wines are released after ten years in the cellar with some just beginning to reach their peak after twenty years. Many of the great vintages such as the 1953, 1959 and 1969 are still maturing, so it's reassuring to learn that Moulin Touchais are also the only winemakers in the world who give a century long guarantee on the longevity of their wines (subject to being kept under optimal cellar conditions). At frst this seems like a foolish offer and you may well ask "who'll be around to prove it anyway?" The issue can only be resolved by tasting old bottles, which we did, including vintages from 1892, 1885 and 1872. At over 100 years of age, the wines were probably still not at their peak. James Halliday attended our tasting summing up the experience in one word: ‘Euphoric'.

    Tasting Note:
A wine that is still vibrant with youth, displaying remarkable freshness. Deep brassy gold colour with deep straw hue. Aroma of baked apple and spice followed by hints of confectionary. The wine expresses great concentration of favours and mouth feel with very spicy characteristics. Flavours of honey, honeycomb, baked apple and lemon fll the palate. The acidity is fresh, holding the structure of this wine together superbly. Very long aftertaste of honeysuckle, honeycomb, lemon and toffee.

    Tasting Note:
According to Mr Jean-Marie Touchais the 1997 is the best vintage he has made (so far) and he ranks it alongside great vintages like 1885, 1921 and 1959. While it offers immense pleasure now, it will be a wine for the next generations to enjoy. The colour of this wine is slightly deeper than the 1999 and 1998 displaying a deep straw gold colour with golden edges and pale gold hue. The nose displays good intensity with lifted aromas of honeysuckle, lemon and spice followed by a touch of butterscotch. Mouthflling viscous palate favours of honeyed apricot, lemon and peach with a spicy back palate. Superb acid balance and freshness. Clean fnish with exceptionally long aftertaste of honeyed apricot, spice and honeycomb.

Shows the power and depth of this great vintage, with a core of still-youthful mango, guava and creamed peach flavors streaming along, backed by light heather, honeysuckle and quince notes. The long finish is creamy and pure, displaying a lovely lining of brioche and lemon curd. Drink now through 2037

Tasting Notes: Brilliant golden colour with golden hue. The nose remains subtle again, with nuances of orange blossom, caramel, toffee, apple andspice. Rich luscious palate with generous mouthfeel. The complexity is beginning to take on even greater expression here; spice, toffee apple, lemon and honeycomb flavours are layered over a viscous palate. The acidity is still fresh, with very long aftertaste of toffee apple, honey and lemon.

Tasting note from 2004: This wine really demonstrates the aging potential and wonderful favour profle that these wines develop. Deep golden colour with deep orange gold hue. There is a hint of oloroso sherry like note at frst sniff, followed by hints of honeycomb and orange rind. The palate shows great power and concentration. Flavours of lemon, honey, orange and caramel emerge. Excellent acidity. Perfect balance. Very persistent aftertaste of caramel, orange rind, honeycomb, lemon and honey.

This amazing wine, gold in color, is one of the treasures that appear from time to time from the underground cellars of this great producer. It is old, but its sweetness has not been impaired by age. Rather the sweetness has become intense richness and intense acidity. The wine, full and opulent, is, of course, ready to drink.

At over 50 years old, this wine is still going strong. Bright deep gold colour with a pale gold hue. The nose is a touch closed and requires some coaxing to release its aromas of bees wax, lemon butter, dried fruits, figs, honeyed nuts, hints of clove and spicy cinnamon. Lusciously textured on entry with sweet rich dried fruits and good underlying acidity, time has bestowed the wine with a sense of elegance. Understated in its intensity, dried pineapple flavours mix with marmalade, infusions of bees wax, quince, some dried honey characters, a subtle nuttiness, faint dried clove and spice. Finishes dry, fresh and complex with a very long, beautifully poised aftertaste that lingers for minutes.

Deep brassy gold colour. Rising from the glass is a complex aromatic profile of dried fruits, salted nuts, dried honey, hints of raisins, light prune and spice. Whilst the nose is showing signs of tertiary development, the palate remains amazingly fresh, flooded with dried apricot, honeyed quince and subtle marmalade over a back drop of dried nuts, light cinnamon, raisins and spice. Evolving at a glacial pace, this is an exceptionally concentrated and luscious Moulin Touchais yet shows remarkable vibrancy for it’s age.

The 1996 has a evolved at a glacial pace since our last tasting some 15 years ago. Bright pale gold to gold colour with a deeper tone of gold to the edges. A touch more subdued than other vintages, the nose offers up aromas of honey, spice, pear skin and quince followed by some baked apple and cinnamon notes. Exceptionally long and concentrated across the palate, honeyed peach, pear and quince fruits are featured over a delicate baked apple, marmalade and spice back drop. Despite its luscious mid palate feel it finishes dry, showing remarkable vibrancy and length.

Tasting note from 2010: Bright lemon gold colour with golden straw edges and pale gold hue. The nose is a touch restrained at first but opens up to reveal aromas of quince, lemon, apple and spice followed by a touch of honey as an end note. The palate is quite spicy, more so than the previous vintages tasted (99, 98 & 97) and displays flavours of baked apple, spice and lemon honey with spiced honey back palate flavours. Outstanding mouthfeel and concentration. Excellent acidity and structure with a clean finish, looking very youthful and showing no signs of bottle age whatsoever. Exceptionally long aftertaste of baked apple, spiced honey and quince.

This estate, owned by the same family since 1787, has amazing stocks of old sweet wines maturing in its cellars. With red apple, honey and apricot aromas, this wine, mature and yet so fresh, is proof of the aging ability of Chenin Blanc. It is the balance between the ripe honeyed flavors and the intense acidity that keeps it so vibrant. Drink this superb wine now.

Still incredibly youthful in its appearance with a straw yellow, pale gold colour. Lemony bees wax, fresh marmalade and subtle clove notes show plenty of potency with honeyed cinnamon and spicy baked apple notes following up on the rear. The 2020 Chenin Blanc Old Vine Granite has a bouquet similar to the Schist Chenin Blanc, but with a slightly heightened sea spray/marine influence and touches of orange blossom. The well-balanced palate delivers a little more weight and density than the Schist. Sour lemon and a touch of stem ginger emerge toward the persistent finish. Give this 2–3 years in bottle to develop. Drink 2023-2036.

The 2020 Granite Chenin Blanc is fresh, citrus-laced and pure with a ripe essence of stone fruit that sways with elements of dusty flowers on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, the wine has a delightful, energetic acidity that keeps the structure balanced while displaying a crisp, mineral tension that leaps off the palate. The wine glides to a delightfully lingering and food-friendly finish. Just under a 1,000 bottles were made.

Napa Cellars has more than 40 years of winemaking heritage in California. Fruit for the 2021 Chardonnay were sourced primarily from vineyards in Napa Valley with a portion also coming from the nearby Clarksburg AVA. The climates in these areas of California provide ideal conditions for growing Chardonnay. The proximity of Napa’s vineyards to the fog and breeze from San Francisco and Marin Bay creates a mild, Mediterranean climate. Similarly, the climate in Clarksburg features warm days tempered by cool maritime winds and fog, which move inland from San Francisco Bay.
The wine was fermented and aged in 100% French oak barrels, 21% of which were new and completed malolactic fermentation with regular lees stirring for five months.
