2019 Cheval des AndesMendoza, ARGENTINA$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenCellar: 8 - 10 Years (2031-2033)ABV: 14%Closure: CorkCheval des Andes is the brainchild of Pierre Lurton from Cheval Blanc with the dream to follow the original Malbec vines from Bordeaux to Argentina. Malbec was brought to Argentina in the mid-19th century, and having avoided the phylloxera epidemic that swept through Europe, the ungrafted vines here represent a unique opportunity to express Malbec in a way not possible with the grafted vines found elsewhere. With this aim, Chateau Cheval Blanc started a joint venture with Terrazas de Los Andes in 1999 and Cheval des Andes was born. Since then, a predominantly Malbec, Bordeaux-style blend has become the signature of Cheval des Andes. The 2019 vintage though is made of an equal blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, under the new French winemaker, Gerald Gabillet.
A 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Pitch black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Closed at first but becoming more expressive with time in the glass are blackcurrant and red cherry aromas infused with a mix of graphite and black olives which followed by some dusty pencil shaving like notes, tobacco and spicy herbs. Much more open for business than the nose, the medium to full bodied palate is immersed in rich red to black currant and black cherry fruits which are delivered with driving length. Notions of black olive, dried herbs, earthy graphite, tobacco and spicy cedar linger on the back half. Agile acidity and finely structured tannins tighten up the long refined finish.
Cellar 8-10 years plus.
Alc. 14%Other Reviews....
The 2019 Cheval des Andes had a more reductive vinification and élevage, making the wine a bit shy and in need of time to open up, as one of their objectives was to make it more age-worthy. Another objective is to get to a 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, which they achieved in this vintage for the first time, going back to the initial character of the wine that was the idea of Argentinean winemaker Roberto de la Mota; so, they are closing the circle and going back to the initial idea, with more implication from the Cheval Blanc team. This is the first vintage fully under the charge of the new French winemaker, Gerald Gabillet, who fermented by plot, isolating some specific parts of the vineyard, like the borders where you tend to get higher yields because of the irrigation. It matured in 225- and 400-liter oak barrels and in oak vats. They used more barrels and vats from Stockinger, which they like and rotate; the wine spends an average of 13 to 14 months in oak, but some lots get 11 months and others get 16. 2019 was a mild vintage, cooler than 2017 and warmer than 2018, with rain at the right time, which helped to avoid hydric stress, and without extremes (which they had in 2020 with three weeks of extreme heat). The wine is young and tender and a bit oaky, which Gerald attributed to the reductiveness; it's ripe without excess, with around 14.2% alcohol, mellow acidity and velvety tannins. There's more Cabernet here, so the aromatic expression can be something between 2017 and 2018, but Cabernet marks the palate a lot and makes the wine more age-worthy, as it provides the structure and length that the Malbec lacks. So, the wine might be less accessible when young and should develop slowly in bottle. It's tasty and supple and has the ingredients and the balance for what they are aiming for. In the following vintages, they follow this path, and Gabillet feels that having more precision allows the wines to reflect the differences between vintages better. They keep producing around 100,000 bottles. It was bottled in late January 2021. The way they want to describe the wine is the Argentinean expression of Cheval Blanc. And I can only agree. Drink: 2023-2035.

Luis Gutierrez - Wine AdvocateA refined but spicy Cheval, showing charcoal, blueberries, wild herbs, lavender and hints of bacon and cedar. Medium to full body with extremely fine tannins that get dialed into the fruit with violet, spices and sweet blue fruit at the end. Long and subtle. Drink or hold.

James SucklingThe 2019 Cheval des Andes is a 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon from Las Compuertas and Paraje Altamira, Mendoza. The 2019 was 40% aged in 225-liter barrels, 40% in 500-liter barrels and 20% in foudres. It’s red with violet flecks in the glass. It has a fresh nose of plum and blackcurrant accompanied by hints of white pepper, mint and violets over a bed of cedar and sandalwood. On the palate, the feel is finely grained with a leaner, more agile flow than in previous years, while the freshness brings plenty of energy before the lengthy finish of fruit and country herb aromas. Drink: 2024-2035.

2020 Petrolo GalatronaTuscany, ITALY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The Petrolo 2020 Galatrona is a pure expression of organic Merlot and the estate's headline wine. It was first created in 1994 when Luca Sanjust's second child, Lucia, was born. Despite the summer heat that became a challenge for winemakers in many corners of Tuscany, Galatrona shows terrific results in 2020. The vineyard is located in a cool and thickly forested position almost exactly between Florence, Arezzo and Siena. The vintage has a classic quality with a subtle bouquet that grows in intensity as the wine opens in the glass. Aromas of cherry, toasted almond and dried mint fuel a long and very elegant finish. The oak tannins are soft and sweet, and the wine boasts long-lasting flavors. Drink: 2023 - 2043.

Monica Larner - Wine AdvocateThe 2020 Galatrona is stunning. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best vintages of the Galatrona I can remember tasting. I am especially impressed by its vertical intensity and explosive energy. All the elements are so impeccably woven together. Dark-toned fruit, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice and spice build into the intense, palate-staining finish. The 2018 [sic] spent 18-20 months in French oak, about 25% new, with some larger barrels thrown into the mix. Magnificent. Drink 2025-2040.

Antonio Galloni - VinousSubtle yet intense aromas of black fruit and violets. Extremely perfumed. Crushed stones. 2019 Favia Erickson Winegrowers Cabernet Sauvignon CoombsvilleNapa Valley, California, UNITED STATES$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenABV: 15.5%Closure: CorkFavia Winery, based in Napa Valley, California, is a collaboration between viticulturist Annie Favia and winemaker Andy Erickson. Founded in 2001, they focus on two varieties that thrive in Napa: Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Organic farming practices in the vineyard and a hands-off approach in the winery make it possible for the husband-wife team to highlight the distinct Napa Valley terroir of Coombsville, in the southeastern corner of the Valley.
Other Reviews....
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville is a blend mostly from Meteor. A stunning wine, the 2019 possesses off the charts richness and tremendous depth that just builds with time in the glass. Inky dark fruit, plum, spice, licorice, menthol and crushed berries saturate the palate. The 2019 is one of the very finest wines I have ever tasted from Andy Erickson and Annie Favia. Don't miss it.

Antonio Galloni - VinousWonderful aromas of blue fruit, black olives and violets. Lead pencil throughout. Crushed stones, too. Hints of mint and seaweed. Full-bodied with tannins that spread across the palate. It starts off with a bang, with tannins that take you deep into the wine. It’s endless on the finish. It goes on for minutes. Velvet and polished texture. Better after 2026.

James SucklingErickson makes some of the greatest wines from the Coombsville appellation, and his 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville is a great example of the quality he's able to achieve. Darker currants, blue fruits, tobacco, lead pencil, and violets notes all define the bouquet, and I always find a certain Saint-Julien-like quality from this appellation, which is present here. Full-bodied, with a great mid-palate, some chocolaty oak, and velvety tannins, this is another rich yet powerful Cabernet Sauvignon that will benefit from just short term-cellaring and cruise for two decades in cold cellars. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Jeb DunnuckThis is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Coombsville reflecting the gravelly, volcanic terroir and proximity to San Pablo Bay with a minimal interventionist practise. Powerful and expressive nose, extremely aromatic, but feels direct and quite detailed. Juicy and alive, you feel the life pulsing through this wine, it's got depth of flavour but the texture is light graceful piercing almost with a sharp crisp tang that is so thrilling. The acidity is there giving life and joy to the blackcurrant and berry fruits and this has such detail and nuance in the savoury earthy edges; smoked meats, liquorice, dark chocolate dusting, iodine-soy saltiness, strawberry tang and long finish. Well structured, with balance and elegance and lovely details throughout. So much character here.

Cardamaro Amaro (750ml)ITALY$68. 99Bottle$827.88 DozenABV: 17%An amaro made using Moscato wine with a key ingredient being artichoke thistle (aka 'cardoon', 'cardone' or 'cardoni'); It is the one and only wine-based amaro and the only one to employ Nizza Monferrato Cardoon - a winter vegetable similar to celery, but belonging to the artichoke family. After maceration is complete, the liquid is rested in oak for six months before bottling. Deep polished copper in colour, the aromas suggest citrus zest, gentian, pine wood, liquorice root and peppermint. The palate isn't heavy or particularly bitter - more medium-bodied, fresh and Vermouth-like with a zesty, pleasingly bitter, warming spice and quinine finish that also hints at bergamot, herbal teas and citrus. A delicious pre-dinner drink or refresher, but also sought out for its medicinal qualities, other ingredients include calumba, juniper, Gentiana Lutea berries, cloves, liquorice root, cardamom, lemon peel and marjoram cultivated in Piedmont. 17% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... On the nose it is strong and complex, thanks to the blend of the various extracts and the long ageing process. Spicy notes of Hunchback Cardoon, Gentiana, clary sage and liquorice are prominent; hints of dried fruit, grapes and ginger also emerge. The taste is sweet, full and well-orchestrated flavour reflecting the extraordinary balance between the sweet note, the bitter quality of some of the officinal herbs and the pleasant tastiness of the wine. The tasting experience is unique, with pleasantness unmatched by any other amaro, thanks to the moderate alcohol content. The long-lasting aftertaste retains the complexity and spicy notes of the herbs, with a slight hint of tobacco.
- Francois Voyer Pineau Des Charentes Blanc (750ml)Cognac, FRANCE$49. 99Bottle$599.88 DozenABV: 17.5%
A specialty of Cognac, Pineau des Charentes is generally categorised as a fortified wine (aka 'mistelle' or 'vin de liqueur' in France). However, being a blend of unfermented or only lightly-fermented grape must and Cognac eau-de-vie it could be argued that the genre is more akin to a liqueur. The net effect is a disjointed blend of grape juice and spirit that needs at least a year in cask in order to integrate. Franois Voyer's expression is composed of two thirds grape juice and one third of young Cognac, aged in oak barrels more for than 18 months. These styles typically present aromas of fresh orchard fruits with hints of honey, figs, vanilla and flowers. A fabulous aperitif, Pineau des Charentes will also work with some desserts, for example, fresh fruit tarts and fruit salads, or try it with a goose liver paté. 17.5% Alc./Vol.

- Imperial Measures Scarlet Sweet Vermouth (375ml)South Australia, AUSTRALIA$26. 99Bottle$323.88 DozenABV: 18%
A revision of the traditional vermouth concept. Designed for cocktails, with the Negroni as a focus, this vermouth also suits the classic stir-down formats such as the Manhattan, Boulevardier and Vieux Carré. Scarlet is also at home in an Americano or served with soda. A total of 40 botanicals are employed with Wormwood – a key component of any Vermouth - supported by citrus, nuts, roots, herbs, fruits and spices. Working in collaboration with Michael Downer of Murdoch Hill Wines, a blend of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay and Pinot Noir was chosen as the base wine. Botanicals were individually vacuum sealed with spirit and gently heated in a water bath to infuse and extract flavour. This process retains all the delicate notes otherwise lost in traditional methods of production. Bottled in 375ml 'hand grenades', the smaller bottle allows the product to remain as vibrant and fresh as possible after opening by limiting air exposure. 18% Alc./vol.

2019 Peter Michael Winery Les PavotsNapa Valley, California, UNITED STATES$450. 00Bottle$5400.00 DozenABV: 14.7%Closure: CorkIn 1982, after six years of searching for land to serve as both vineyard and family retreat, Sir Peter Michael and Lady Michael purchased 630 acres of volcanic ridges on the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley. As an avid collector of the wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy, he set out to create his vision of a mountain-grown, California Cabernet Sauvignon wine that would show authentic terroir, and rival even his favourite wines from home. In 1988, the first harvest of ‘Les Pavots’ (“The Poppies” - named in honour of the Golden State’s California flower) was released, showcasing a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot from the Knights Valley Estate Les Pavots Vineyard, which is rooted in the volcanic rich soils of Mount St Helena.

This is very perfumed with blackberry and pine-cone aromas, as well as raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins that are tight-grained. Creamy and beautiful. Currant and graphite flavors come through. Lightly chewy at the end. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot, 14% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. Drink after 2025.

James SucklingThe 2019 Les Pavots is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, and the remainder Petit Verdot. It has unfolding layers of dark minerals, with graphite, boysenberry liqueur, and fresh leather. The palate is expressive of its mountain fruit, with more gripping structure but no harsh edges. This is a remarkable wine to hold a few years and enjoy over the following two decades.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Les Pavots is a dense, powerful wine that is going to need at least a few years to shed some baby fat. A rush of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, sage, tobacco, grilled herbs and incense washes across the palate. There's terrific depth, but the 2019 is so young. The 2019 is one of the more refined young Les Pavots I can remember tasting. It will be exquisite in another few years' time.

Antonio Galloni - VinousFrom one of the smallest yields in the history of this Knights Valley vineyard, the 2019 Les Pavots matured in 70% new French oak. A delicious blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, it should possess close to two decades of drinkability.

Fresh and deep nose, full of blueberries, minty cassis, mussels, cigars, dark spice and roasted sesame oak, which will need a year or two to fully integrate. A medium-to full-bodied Almaviva with supple, silky tannins and a wealth of black and blue fruit that provides a lot of charm now. Voluptuous and flattering on the palate, hallmarked by its tension and taut texture. Very long. This is the 25th anniversary bottling. 68% cabernet sauvignon, 24% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Drinkable now, but better from 2024.

James Suckling2020 was exceptionally dry, with 75% less rain than usual in the period between May and September, which resulted in an earlier harvest to produce a 2020 Almaviva with 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Carmenère (from Peumo), 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, so with no Merlot this time. The process was as careful as possible, without using any bombs, doing manual and optical sorting of the grapes, pressing in small vertical presses and aging of 20 months in French oak barrels, 73% of them new and the rest second use. The wine reached good ripeness with 14.9% alcohol. It still shows the effect of the élevage a bit, with abundant notes of sweet spices, a creamy touch and some smoke. I tasted it next to the 2019, and the wines have a very similar aromatic palette with a clear note of baked peppers. What was amazing in 2020 was that they harvested the Carmenere almost five weeks earlier than they normally would, and the result is not a green wine at all. As in all dry years, the wines show a little more tannic, a little in the style of the 2017—but the 2020 has more tension than the 2017, and the 2017 was more powerful and with a bigger tannic structure. The 2019 had more volume than the 2018, and the 2020 is closer to the 2019 than the 2018. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled during the second half of February 2022. Drink: 2024 - 2036.

2019 Inglenook RubiconNapa Valley, California, UNITED STATES$450. 00Bottle$5400.00 DozenClosure: CorkWhile the history of the Inglenook estate dates back to 1873, the modern rejuvenation of the property began when Francis Ford Coppola purchased a portion of the vineyards in 1975. He vowed to reunite the various parcels of land, along with the historic Chateau, and restore the reputation Inglenook enjoyed earlier in its life. With input from esteemed Bordeaux consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, and Philippe Bascaules (Chateau Margaux), Inglenook is now firmly one of the leading properties in Napa Valley.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose pops with vivacious notes of warm cassis, blackberry pie and redcurrant jelly, plus hints of crushed rocks, bay leaves and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers a solid, firm and grainy texture with a lively backbone cutting through dense earth-laced layers, finishing long and minerally. Impressive!

James Suckling - 2020 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey Chambertin La JusticeBurgundy, FRANCE$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Cork
The Roy family has been cultivating grapes for four generations and in 1982, they began bottling their own production to fulfil their passion. With much effort and an acute focus on further enhancing their wines, Marc and his daughter Alexandrine bought a few more blocks of vineyards to increase the size of the Domaine to four hectares. In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar. Gradually, she reduced the yields, to produce fewer but better grapes with greater concentration of flavour. The vineyards are grown organically, strictly maintained, with great attention to detail.
The Domaine is composed of 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir for four different cuvées. ‘La Justice’ cuvée – named after its climat that Alexandrine bought in 2010 – produced its first vintage as recently as 2011. La Justice is located in the northeast part of Gevrey-Chambertin. The most recently released vintages of La Justice and Clos Prieur are so exceptionally made, that most wine critics consider them to be of a Premier Cru standard.

An interesting and equally fresh and ripe nose combines notes of black fruit coulis, kirsch, violet and a floral whiff. The delicious, vibrant and more refined medium weight flavors possess an attractive texture thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the moderately firm tannins on the slightly more complex and sneaky long finale. This too offers very fine quality for its level. Drink from 2026+.

An exuberantly fresh nose reflects notes of straw, petrol, citrus and apple. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the overtly stony middle weight flavors that terminate in a clean and dry finale that is shaped by bright lemon-tinged acidity. Spring Bay Vodka (700ml)Tasmania, AUSTRALIA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%Spring Bay's first calling is single malt whisky, so it's no surprise that their vodka is barley-based, with a portion of wheat included. The mix creates a very pure, creamy style with semi-sweet marshmallow aromas and a medium dry palate that finishes with cleansing citrus and a pepper twang. Light cocoa lingers in the aftertaste. Diluted with pristine east coast rainwater. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Spring Bay Distillery primarily makes single malt whisky, so for its premium vodka, it's taken a portion of unaged single malt spirit and blended it with more traditional neutral grain spirit. The result is a bigger, more robust, oilier vodka than your standard commercial brands. This answers the question: 'why buy vodka from a whisky producer?' without being so big and funky as to be unrecognisable. Lots of malt sweetness and vanilla on the nose with a whiff of barnyard funk leads to a gentle palate with good texture and a clean finish of lingering orange pith. I’m never quite sure what to do with products like this as more neutral vodkas will mix more easily, but if you like your vodka on the rocks or really punching through in a mixed drink, this one has plenty of character without tipping into moonshine territory. 93 points - Fred Siggins - winecompanion.com

2020 Rocas de SenaAconcagua Valley, CHILE$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A new second wine here, the 2020 Rocas de Seña is named after the rocky soils from Seña is different as it includes Mediterranean grapes in the blend. This is the first vintage produced, and it’s a blend of 38% Malbec, 25% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Grenache (from their property in Vertientes, where the Syrah also comes from) and 8% Petit Verdot from selected plots from their property in Aconcagua. 2020 was warm and dry and saw an early harvest that delivered concentrated and powerful wines, this one at 14% alcohol and with a pH of 3.53 and 6.09 grams of acidity. It fermented mostly in stainless steel and 10% in concrete eggs, and the blend matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 65% of them new. The nose is very expressive, and the palate is juicy and textured palate, a little warmer and riper than the Seña, with that Mediterranean twist from the Garnacha and Syrah. It has an intense nose, quite primary, with red berries, herbs and even a citrus touch, but there is no sweetness at all. The fine tannins have grip, and the finish is dry and serious. The élevage was similar to the Seña, but in the future, they might go for a slightly shorter élevage and use some foudres. The wine has a very nice bright color and is still young and lively, very much in the serious and elegant style of the Seña, despite the warm inaugural vintage, showing in the juicy palate. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2022. Drink: 2022 - 2028.

The family were proprietors of Barolo’s historic Giacomo Borgogno estate, where Chiara originally learnt her winemaking skills. Her philosophy is to craft wines that marry the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability and the Pira wines are all about elegance, great aromatics and lush textures. This has been achieved through strict vineyard management, careful selection and impeccable vinification techniques. In her vineyards, Chiara has always worked without chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides and the wines have been certified organic since the 2014 vintage.
Via Nuova was originally made solely from the Terlo vineyard on the hill behind the winery that overlooks the village of Barolo. It's assumed that 'Intense' includes extra botanicals in the mix, resulting in a stronger aroma and flavour which is said to be reminiscent of "...garden mint, herbs, vanilla, bitter orange peel and flowers". Having been distillers for four centuries, the monks have perfected a formula derived from several macerations and distillations. 40% Alc./Vol.

Aromas of raspberries, mulberries, iris and rose petals introduce the 2021 Pensées de Lafleur, a medium to full-bodied, supple and suave wine that's polished, pure and velvety, its sweet core of fruit built around lively acids and ultra-refined tannins, concluding with a long, precise finish. Drink 2027 - 2047.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 09, 2024)The 2021 Les Pensées de Lafleur is a very pretty wine. Strong floral and spice notes give the Pensées tons of charm. Silky tannins reinforce a feeling of finesse that further adds to its immediacy and appeal. Succulent red cherry fruit, red plum, orange peel, cinnamon and cedar open with time in the glass. Bright acids reappear on the finish to round things out. More than anything else, it is the wine's balance that is most impressive. What a charmer. Drink 2025-2041.

James SucklingStunning stuff, the 2021 Château Lafleur Les Pensées has the classic Pomerol sexiness and opulence that defines the vintage. Redcurrants, ripe red fruit, spice, chocolate, and a beautiful sense of minerality and earth all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with round, supple tannins, beautiful purity, and a gorgeous finish. It's the second wine of this estate but as good as just about every Grand Vin out there.

Jeb DunnuckBlackcurrant and black cherry nuances on the nose, smells aromatic but delicate. Strong and intense straight away, you can feel the power here, but it’s cloaked in silk. Smooth and shiny, this is giving confidence and brightness with tang and bite, Gorgeous succulence and crunch but pure too. There’s no sun so you get layers of pixelation and nuance of flavour, hints of spice, coolness, tang and acidity. Taught and tense, strict almost, but you can feel the beginnings of it start to soften. A delicious, pure and straight wine that will be a beauty. Drink 2026 - 2042.

The 2021 Lafleur has turned out brilliantly in bottle, unfurling in the glass with aromas of mulberries and raspberries mingled with complex top notes of mint, rose petals, exotic spices, licorice, blood orange and iris. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's polished and suave, with an enveloping core of sweet, pure fruit framed by ripe tannins, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. It's a blend of 52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot. Drink 2027 - 2065.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 09, 2024)The 2021 Lafleur is a complex and mysterious wine. Tasting it today is like opening an early chapter in a great book. There's plenty of intrigue, but so much has yet to develop. Possessing dynamic energy and dimension, the 2021 is incredibly fascinating. This edition of Lafleur has tremendous pedigree and complexity—a wine of notable nuance and character. Dark red-toned fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and gravel linger. Drink 2028-2051.

James SucklingAn utterly quintessential Lafleur, the 2021 Château Lafleur is a blend of 52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot. Sensational framboise, woodsmoke, spring flowers, tobacco, and graphite are just some of the nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a layered, multi-dimensional texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a stunning finish. It's clearly the wine of the vintage and has more depth, layers, and length than just about every other wine in the vintage. It deserves 5-7 years in the cellar and will evolve beautifully over the following two decades. Not enough can be said about the talent, dedication, and attention to detail that regularly occurs at this address, and clearly the results are in the bottle. Drink 2029 - 2050.

Jeb DunnuckAn exceptional success in 2021 and surely one of the best wines of the vintage. An expressive nose, which opens more after 10 minutes in the glass, gives lovely salty soy aromas, ripe and concentrated blackcurrant, wet stone, smoked earth notes with perfume lingering in the background - lilac, violets and irises as well as some sweet chocolate - so much going on. Clearly powerful, ripe and concentrated - intensity on a grand scale - really giving a lot of flavour but tightly packaged in terms of layers and tannins which are finely grained and settle in the mouth giving the frame. The flavours expand slowly and then linger so long on the finish. Direct, linear, determined and persistent with clear definition of each element. Purity, clarity and balance - I just love the intention here - it knows where it's going with a quiet confidence and gives a warm blood and iodine note at the end bringing you right back to Lafleur. Sensational. Drink 2027 - 2050.

2021 Chateau HosannaPomerol, Bordeaux, FRANCE$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2021 Hosanna is a fleshy, expressive wine, offering up aromas of sweet plums and berries mingled with spices, licorice, rose petals and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, broad and open-knit, it's a lively, charming wine that will likely take on more depth and structure with further élevage in barrel.
91-94 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 30, 2022)The 2021 Hosanna was picked from September 24 to October 6. It presents a beautiful bouquet of delineated, focused black cherries, blueberry and wilted violet scents, plus a hint of gravel in the background. The palate is fresh on the entry, presaging a typical solid structure, and quite saline, demonstrating much more grip and substance on the finish compared to, say, Latour à Pomerol or La Grave. Cellar this for 4–6 years if you can. Drink 2029-2050.
93-95 points
Neal Martin - VinousThis is silky and very fine with firm, seamless tannins that are just a tiny bit angular now. Medium body. Plenty of sweet mulberry, raspberry, wet clay and olive notes. Mocha at the end. Long.
94-95 points
James SucklingThe 2021 Château Hosanna isn't going to match the top vintages of this cuvée, but it's certainly up with the crème de la crème in this vintage. Sporting a vivid ruby/purple hue, notes of cassis, raspberries, tobacco, and scorched earth, medium body, and considerable elegance and purity, it's an incredibly pretty, floral, satisfying effort that makes the most of the 2021 vintage. I'd drink it any time over the coming 15-20 years.

Jeb DunnuckSpices, truffle, espresso, chocolate and red pit fruits with a strong note of flowers and a hint of licorice create the nose. On the palate, the wine is silky, energetic, fresh, supple, polished and vibrant, with layers of dark chocolate, cherries, black plums, coffee bean and blackberries. Yields were low this year at only 28 hectoliters per hectare. The harvest took place September 24 - October 6. Drink from 2025-2045.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderSmoked blackberries and ripe cherry fruit combine with green pepper, black pepper, roses and liquorice spice on the nose, the Cabernet Franc coming through in the aromatics. Devilishly sensual texture and depth of flavour on the palate, it doesn't shout but makes its presence known straight away affirming that it has power but also poise. It's well framed, the tannins so velvety soft and the fruit rich and concentrated - direct and driven - yet with a cool, salty mineral touch that lingers long on the finish. There is an intensity here but at the same time an elegance to the fruit presentation and the finish is elongated. It's charming and will gain further in weight and density over ageing. 2021 Chateau La Fleur-PetrusPomerol, Bordeaux, FRANCE$520. 00Bottle$6240.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2021 La Fleur-Pétrus is performing nicely, exhibiting aromas of plums, cherries, sweet soil tones, loamy soil and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless palate that's lively and charming. Classically proportioned and nicely balanced, if it takes on additional depth with élevage, I'd expect it to land at the upper end of my bracketed score.
91-94 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 30, 2022)The 2021 La Fleur-Pétrus is a regal, elegant wine. Rich and sumptuous, yet classically medium in body, the 2021 is impeccably balanced from start to finish. A rush of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, blood orange and cinnamon build into the exquisite, layered finish. The 2021 reinforces my view that La Fleur-Pétrus is the wine to focus on in the Moueix range. Hosanna and, especially Trotanoy, are more famous, to be sure, but in 2021 those wines are heavily shaped by the growing conditions of the year, while La Fleur-Pétrus is simply La Fleur-Pétrus. Classic Pomerol as far as I am concerned. Drink 2029-2041.

Antonio Galloni - VinousVery polished with fine tannins that finish intensely. It’s a medium-to full-bodied red with focus. Blackberry and blackcurrant flavors. Hints of tobacco and nutmeg, too.

James SucklingUnquestionably one of the standouts in the Moueix stable is the 2021 Château La Fleur-Petrus, a beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied, elegant Pomerol that readers will love. Vivid purple in color with lots of cassis and darker berry fruits, it has classic Pomerol graphite, damp earth, and chalky minerality, some background oak, perfectly integrated tannins, and a great finish. It's already hard to resist and is going to drink nicely right out of the gate.

Jeb DunnuckDeep garnet in color, the wine opens with flowers, chocolate, truffles, licorice, espresso, dark plums, and red pit fruits. Plush, soft, and polished on the palate, with supple-textured, silky fruits in the elegant and almost flamboyant, sensuous finish. This is really quite strong, especially when you consider the difficulties in the vintage. The wine blends 95% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The harvest took place September 23 - October 6. Drink from 2025-2049.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderSucculent and juicy straight away, this has a little party in your mouth giving the chalky strawberry, perfumed blackcurrant, dark chocolate, liquorice and pencil lead all together - bringing a ton of fruit, spice and acidity with thrilling results. You get a touch of austerity still, the minerality and salinity on the tongue but I love the expression here. Feels well worked, all in harmony with such precision on show. Pure class with a seductive core, gentle frame but intense concentration. Super long finish. The Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot really add that extra touch of deliciousness and intrigue. The 2021 Certan de May has also turned out nicely in bottle, bursting with attractive aromas of dark berries, cassis, licorice and fruitcake, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and dynamic palate with good depth of fruit, supple tannins and impressive length on the finish. As readers may remember, this Merlot-dominant blend incorporates fully 37% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, a figure that reflects the vintage (which favored these varieties) as well as a tendency to replant with Cabernet rather than Merlot over the last decade. Drink 2024-2040.
92 points
William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2021 Certan de May was picked from September 27 to October 11. There is a touch of herbaceousness on the nose here, a leitmotif of recent vintages that has left me perplexed in warmer growing seasons, though it’s more understandable in this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and modest depth; no greenness here, but there is a welcome touch of pepper toward the finish. This is an improvement for a Pomerol that can hit the ball out of the park if so inclined. Drink 2028-2048.
90-92 points
Neal Martin - VinousGood depth and breadth of complexity here showing cassis, black plums, fresh blackberries, iron, cigar and dark chili chocolate. Plump and juicy on the palate with medium to full body and a long and juicy finish. Tannins are fresh and caressing. An excellent delivery from the vintage. Drink or hold.

James SucklingFragrant red cherries and milk chocolate, super-bright and vibrant from the first sip; the light, almost spritzy texture and touch of sweet and sourness to the red fruit makes this fresh and energetic. The fruit focuses on strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants with graphite edges that give the minerality and touch of salinity to the palate also which is so appealing. Lifted and fresh but this also has the deep core and tight centre. The acidity and red fruit are to the fore right now but there is no doubt this is a serious wine with class and a long ageing potential. One I retasted several times. Beguiling. Drink 2026-2048.

2021 Chateau TrotanoyPomerol, Bordeaux, FRANCE$580. 00Bottle$6960.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The most muscular, structured wine in the Mouiex portfolio is the 2021 Trotanoy, a medium to full-bodied, ample and layered Pomerol evocative of cherries, licorice, loamy soil, black truffles and spices. Impressively concentrated and tightly wound, it will reward bottle age.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 30, 2022)The 2021 Trotanoy was picked September 27 to October 4. This has one of the most marine-influenced aromatic profiles among the Pomerol wines tasted, very well defined and even uncompromising in some ways, revealing touches of iris flower and sea cave. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. A typical Trotanoy structure: maybe aloof in some ways, yet compelling at the same time. Sappy on the persistent finish. This should turn into a very cerebral Pomerol that will appeal to those who adore this estate. Not for the first time, this is JP Moueix's star this year. Drink 2030-2065.
94-96 points
Neal Martin - VinousA very fine-tannined red with ultra-fine, polished and velvety tannins that run the length of the wine. Medium-bodied. Very classy.
96-97 points
James SucklingClassic Trotanoy austerity and structure define the 2021 Château Trotanoy, which is tight and reserved on the palate, with medium-bodied richness and ripe yet certainly present tannins. Offering solid aromatics of red and black fruits, graphite, liquid violets, and loamy earth, it has rock solid mid-palate depth, and while it's not massive, it's no lightweight either. It will benefit from bottle age.
94-96 points
Jeb DunnuckAsian spice, truffle, chocolate, espresso, fennel and dark red pit fruits are all over the place, on the nose and palate here. Classic, vibrant, refined, and also reticent at the moment, this reminds me in some ways of the best attributes from previous classic vintages that are now aged into maturity. The finish is filled with dark, red pit fruits, espresso, spice, and a touch of fresh mint with a hint of salted plums on the backend. The wine is produced from 100% Merlot. The harvest took place September 27-October 4. Drink from 2026-2055.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderSmoked wild berries, with fragrant cherries on the nose. The texture stands out straight away, smooth, broad, muscular but also sleek, refined and precise. Flavours of bright cherries and raspberries with smoked earth and liquorice nuances coarse across the palate lifted by the acidity but not overpowered by it. The gently gripping tannins have a chalky, liquorice tang to them, settling on the tongue and providing the support and frame. This feels well worked, quietly confident - extremely well delivered and charming. It has both the concentration and glamour that Pomerol does so well. 2021 Chateau Belair-MonangeSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
Offering up aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, pipe tobacco, loamy soil and spices, the 2021 Belair Monange is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with powdery tannins and a bright spine of acidity, concluding with a long, intensely saline finish. As young vines replanted on the plateau start to dominate the blend, the identity of this cru is becoming more and more marked, delivering wines of precision and sapidity.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 30, 2022)The 2021 Bélair-Monange is a very beautiful wine. Fruit forward and punchy, the 2021 makes quite a first impression. Ripeness is naturally less pushed here than in recent vintages - that is the year - but it is a style that works so well, as this site offers plenty of richness on its own. A rush of inky red/purplish fruit fills out the layers nicely. There's not a ton of nuance or detail yet, but that will likely come in time. This is very nicely done. Drink 2031-2061.
93-95 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousMedium to full body with creamy, velvety tannins. Polished and plush. Pretty spice notes, such as white pepper and cloves to the ripe dark-plum and berry fruit. Some pine cones. Fine, ripe and textured. Concentrated for the vintage. Wonderful length, too.
96-97 points
James SucklingThe 2021 Château Belair-Monange continues to impress, and you could put this up with the top wines in the vintage with no issues. Floral notes of blue fruits, violets, chalky minerality, and spice define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a good mix of both richness and freshness, building tannins, and a great finish. Turning more mineral-laced, sappy, and floral as it sits in the glass, this is a complete, incredibly classy Saint-Emilion that will round into form with just a few years of bottle age. If you haven't heard of this château, trust me on this one, get on its bandwagon, as it's destined to be one of the greats in Saint-Emilion.

Jeb DunnuckDeep ruby in color, the wine is filled with black raspberries, flowers, mint, and spices. On the palate, the wine is plush, soft, polished, fresh, vibrant, and long, finishing with crushed rocks, stones, chalk, and bright, fresh, red fruits, with just a touch of spearmint on the backend. The wine blends 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, Drink from 2023-2049.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderCool blue fruit touches on the nose, excellent acidity gives a rush of succulent and mouth watering cherry and strawberry fruit before this settles quite quickly revealing the minerality so characteristic of this estate. Chalky, wet stone and graphite touches come in with a saltiness that perfectly balances the sweet and concentrated red fruits. This feels refined and well worked with a brightness that is so enjoyable. The 1% Cabernet Franc gives structure and backbone. 2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkThe Muncagota vineyard looks South/East - facing cooler morning sunshine instead of the warmer afternoon sun. Because of this, it tends to show beautiful floral characteristics and often a specific mint character on the nose. Calcareous soil and a low level of sand gives to the wines of Muncagota extremely focused fruit and firm, stylish tannin. A perfect example of the elegant and intense qualities that make Barbaresco one of the most interesting and unique wines of the world.
Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota plays some of its best cards in terms of texture, offering silky tannins, firmness and a long-lasting veil of fruit flavors. Cassis, wild cherry, camphor ash, spice and iron ore are aromatic protagonists. This wine is lean and compact but very linear and focused. Like the other Riservas in this group of new releases, the wine is fermented in steel and aged in large oak casks for 32 months. 10,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2024 - 2048.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is one of the lighter wines in this range. Floral and medium in body, the 2017 gives the impression of a wine that will open earlier than some of the others. It, too, has pretty imposing tannins though, so a few years in bottle are advisable. 2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOvello is the northernmost vineyard in the village of Barbaresco and among the first 5 single-vineyards produced back in 1967. Soils are calcareous and rich in clay: these characterics combined with the cooler microclimate shape its exuberant fruit profile and its fuller body. Due to its powerful structure, some years of bottle ageing are usually required to balance that out.
Other Reviews....
One of the bigger productions (with 17,744 bottles) in the Produttori del Barbaresco's portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process. Drink 2024 - 2045.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don't think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. 2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Paje Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkPajè is in a small bowl facing South/West and it lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. The vineyard is slightly lower in altitude and more open to the Tanaro River influence, resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with a high calcium level and as a result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins; it is never shy in acidity. Pajè appears sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages and is particularly attractive after some ageing, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate.
Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is impressive on all fronts, but especially in terms of aromas. There's so much brightness here with red and purple fruits, rust and a dark note of clove or exotic spice. No element is out of place, but together they help to build the intensity of this balanced wine. It shows a soft, velvety texture, and perhaps there is a little more ripeness overall in this warm vintage. Production is 6,666 bottles. Drink 2024 - 2045.

2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Pora Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkProximity to the Tanaro River creates a unique microclimate for the Pora, as well as a relative warmth in the early morning hours due to its proximity to the valley floor. The slightly higher soil fertility here gives to the wine a smoother character, with soft tannins and aromas that usually tend to open up in the early years of life. Pora is also one of the most historical vineyards in Barbaresco, as it was part of the property of Domizio Cavazza.
Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora (with 13,333 bottles released) is usually the first wine I taste each year when I review this set of Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco. That's because it usually appears as the most delicate, and the intensity of each successive bottle increases after this one. But these schematics are a bit more difficult to align in a hot and dry vintage such as this that produced richer and more succulent fruit across the board. The Pora is redolent of red and purple fruit with a little more blackberry and plum compared to previous editions. The tannic strength of the wine is also more elaborate. Pora works very well in 2017. Drink 2025 - 2048.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is rich, creamy and layered, with a bit more generosity than is typically the case. Sweet red cherry, red plum, spice and rose petal are amplified in a radiant, open-knit Barbaresco that will start drinking well in a few years' time. Drink 2025-2037.

Antonio Galloni - VinousA rich, fruity version, this Barbaresco exudes ripe cherry fruit augmented by accents of tar, mint, earth and spice. Firms up nicely on the finish, yet stays fresh and energetic. Best from 2024 through 2040.

Bruce Sanderson - Wine SpectatorBalsamic aromas of camphor mingle with cedar, underbrush and dark spice. The austere palate shows dried cherry, prune soaked in spirits, licorice and clove alongside taut, close-grained tannins that leave a somewhat drying finish. Drink through 2029.
