Spring Bay Vodka (700ml)
Spring Bay's first calling is single malt whisky, so it's no surprise that their vodka is barley-based, with a portion of wheat included. The mix creates a very pure, creamy style with semi-sweet marshmallow aromas and a medium dry palate that finishes with cleansing citrus and a pepper twang. Light cocoa lingers in the aftertaste. Diluted with pristine east coast rainwater. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Spring Bay Distillery primarily makes single malt whisky, so for its premium vodka, it's taken a portion of unaged single malt spirit and blended it with more traditional neutral grain spirit. The result is a bigger, more robust, oilier vodka than your standard commercial brands. This answers the question: 'why buy vodka from a whisky producer?' without being so big and funky as to be unrecognisable. Lots of malt sweetness and vanilla on the nose with a whiff of barnyard funk leads to a gentle palate with good texture and a clean finish of lingering orange pith. I’m never quite sure what to do with products like this as more neutral vodkas will mix more easily, but if you like your vodka on the rocks or really punching through in a mixed drink, this one has plenty of character without tipping into moonshine territory. 93 points - Fred Siggins - winecompanion.com
