An American with a traditional sweetness that carries on consistently through the dram in the form of fruit notes. The finish reminded the Cadenhead's tasting panel of a piña colada cocktail. Even from a tiny sample, aromas billow from the glass, mixing up tinned peaches with vanilla gobstopper and Bounty bar. Eminently sipable with a nice fruity-oak-corn sweetness, the finish is nutty and riddled with sweet wood shavings followed by late cinnamon and coconut. Doing what any good indie should do, Cadenheads have bottled a whiskey that takes you off the beaten track. Aficionados should have fun comparing it against mainstream styles. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... It's good that those very distinguished people at Cadenhead's would have made it clear that this was ex-bourbon barrel. You never know… Colour: straw. Nose: it's almost as if this was matured in fresh oak for only two or three years and then re-racked in refill. Soft vanillas, brioches and sponge cakes, barley syrup (yes), nougat and popcorn, perhaps tangerines… Mouth: super good! More grasses and herbs, even mosses, green spices, citrus peel… Not sure all that is very 'bourbon', but I really like this development. Goes towards cinnamon and soft peppers then, which was more expected, naturally. Finish: rather long, a tad oakier. A gin with a difference, and a claim to be the oldest gin in the world. That's not hard to believe when you learn half of it's aged in casks for twenty years. The spirit was originally sourced by the House of MacDuff, a company run by mother-and-son team, Jane and Iain MacDuff in Renfrew - a small town just outside Glasgow. Back then, the gin category was relatively slow. Being curious distillers they wondered what a spell in oak might achieve. That turned out to be a lengthy experiment indeed. For the first decade, virgin casks infused sweet vanilla, ginger and strong oak flavours. For the second decade, ex whisky barrels were employed. These allowed the wood to slowly impart greater depth, however the juniper dominant note typical of unaged gins subsided. To revive the botanicals, the liquid was blended with fresh London Dry at a ratio of 1-1. Following several experiments, the result captures the best of both worlds: New & old, deep & fresh. It looks like whisky, but the keynotes of gin come through strongly: Lavender potpourri, chamomile tea, distant peppercorns and cough lozenges repeat in a full-throttle attack. The creamy middle is rounded off by suggestions of orange zest, crushed pine needles, lemon chutney and light vanilla. With tongue tingling peppers to match the botanicals and oak, Fifty/50 is no gin for beginners, and more of a Winter treat than a Summer time refresher. Or if you prefer whisky, this may even swing you into another category. Other ingredients include coriander, cassia bark, cinnamon, angelica, orris root, liquorice, lemon and sweet orange peel. Other reviews... because no-one has aged gin for twenty years, what does it taste like? Is it really like nothing I’ve ever tasted before? The answer is: absolutely. Although it looks more whisky than gin, it’s the opposite on the nose. It has that whisky complexity, yet also that hit of juniper and other aromas you associate more with gin. There’s a vanilla sweetness to it as well, with some oakiness and fresh citrus. It definitely makes you think: ‘Wow, what is this?’ On the palate the juniper is less evident, but the vanilla sweetness is emphasised by some caramel flavours too. The citrus is still there as well. On the nose it’s more like a gin, on the palate more like a whisky, and even reminded me of tequila. It’s super-smooth and warming going down, with a sweet aftertaste. Relatively young, assertive, but not aggressive and just starting to pick up sweetness. Light vanillas, creamy soda, cereals, cinnamon and white pepper come through on the nose. More mature in the mouth. Plump and rounded. Borderline buttery through the middle with oils adding an unctuous texture, balanced against the oak and late spices. Buxom and out of the ordinary for grain at this age. 63.8% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. 258 bottles from an x-Bourbon hogshead.

A feminine, middle-weight Highlander with a slightly floral edge. The aromas include poached orchard fruits (apples, pears), whipped cream, cinnamon and oak shavings, all echoed in the mouth. Biscuity malt runs into a lightly honeyed, waxy, warming finish with late fruity dark chocolate. A crowd pleaser, though none the worse for that. Can take a dash of water to further soften the edges, but it's not essential. 55.9% Alc./Vol. 233 bottles from a Bourbon barrel. Non chill filtered.
John McDougall is something of an industry legend, consulting to famous names like Aultmore, Glenfiddich, Kilchoman and Springbank. He has been instrumental in the MacDuff family securing whiskies to bottle under their own brand name, ‘Golden Casks'. Previous to that, The House of MacDuff were primarily dealing with miniatures and ‘micro’ bottles, earning them a place in the Guinness Book of Records for "The Smallest Bottle of Whisky in the World”. With a customs approved duty free warehouse, they now market their own casks - which is how they met McDougall. Since then, he's continued to consult, helping to choose stand-out barrels and deciding when to bottle. MacDuff now concentrate on building their own brands rather than working for clients. We were so enamoured with many of their selections, we decided shipping these was obligatory. Like several other indies, they focus on x-Bourbon maturations giving the whiskies a full showing with no interference from secondary finishings. Instead, each distillery’s character is presented in high definition giving you a fabulous range of grains and malts to choose from at direct import prices.

Frederic Burrier and his family own the historic Chateau de Beauregard and the small but equally important Chateau du Clos, both based in Pouilly, along with half ownership of Domaine de la Rochette based in Milly-Lamartine. Frederic is a staunch supporter of the wines of Pouilly, and led the commission into the possibility of premier crus for appellation. Winemaking is very traditional, and while he has tried newer methods and equipment, Frederic prefers the results he gets by crushing the grapes prior to using his Vaslin hydraulic press. As of 2020 vintage, many of the plots worked in Pouilly are now classified as premier cru.

Moderate wood sets off notes of exotic aromas that include pineapple, lychee, melon and touches of both white and yellow-fleshed fruit. The dense, powerful and serious medium weight flavors possess an opulent mouth feel before culminating in noticeably warm finish. Also referred to as 'Pale & Dry' Drouin's VSOP lands at a minimum of four years old. Produced from Pays d'Auge fruit with a portion aged in small 225 litre x-wine casks, plus a number of x-fortified wine casks, it's described as a crisp, focused and appetising Calvados showing lovely balance and persistence. Expect notes of sweet cider, baked apples, gingerbread, vanilla and cinnamon with a supple, generous palate and an apply finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

The myth of the Selkie originates from the Scottish Northern Isles. Therianthropes who can shape shift from seal to human by shedding their seal pelt, the bottlers felt the Selkie imagery with its 'blend' of man and animal fit the bill well for a blended malt brand. This batch contains a combination of peated Highland malts, predominantly from ex-bourbon casks. The peat is salient enough to conclude that Ardmore must be a key component, however that gives ground to a nutty/fruity Speyside character. At 50% it's one of the heftier examples going around with no shortage of flavour, creamy enough to enjoy straight, although the peppery spices don't give up, and you have to be partial to a bit of wood smoke. The finish unfolds with cocoa and gingerbread, ending on an attractively saline / coastal note. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... blond in colour with some smoke, vanilla & marzipan on the nose. Understated peat with good body and a long satisfying and sweet finish.

Named for the city of Perth in Scotland, the Old Perth blends have a history dating back to the early 20th century when Peter Thompson, a grocer from Perth, started to create his own whiskies which proved to be popular. Eventually, the lights went out for Old Perth in the early 1970s. Almost half a century later, the brand was resurrected by independent bottlers, Morrison & Mackay, and now Morrisons. The range consists of four different expressions, all of which have matured in sherry casks. The latest and oldest to date is this deeply coloured twelve year old. This release of Lark's Rare Cask 50 series, finished in a 50-year-old barrel that once held Seppeltsfield Para Vintage Tawny Port. “The Para Tawny casks were complex but very intense, so to avoid dominating the carefully-curated spirit we slowly finished the whisky in two casks over four batches”, says Lark founder Bill Lark, who went on the describe the result as “...impossibly long and luxurious, perfect for those intimate fireside chats with friends that extend well into the early hours of the morning”.
Each bottle of the PARA50 come with a copper medallion that has been handcrafted from a decommissioned Lark copper pot still, which was also the case with the Rare Casks Series’ first release. Like its predecessor, the PARA50 is complemented by a 100ml bottle of the same whisky, so collectors who still want to sip the rare malt at their leisure don’t actually need to open the 700ml bottle. 900 were produced.

Other reviews... For their XO product, Drouin incorporates a portion of ex-cognac casks into the usual mix, otherwise dominated by ex-Bordeaux barrels. The youngest spirit in this bottle is eight years old, but it includes some far older stocks as well. The influence of cognac and sherry casks here is almost unmistakable, but adds a welcome aromatic signature. The nutty, saline and sea-breeze character form a nice counterpoint to the dense, vivid, ripe apple component. This has clearly gained depth and complexity with age, but it has not fallen into the trap of becoming too oxidative or overwhelmed by wood. 90 points - distiller.com
Notes from the producers... offers a harmonious nose mixing baked apples, almond and spice hints. The mouth is supple, soft and well developed. Fruity at first it evolves towards vanilla and woodier notes.

Drouin Calvados began rather unintentionally. Christian Drouin Sr., grandfather to the current head of the company, purchased a country house in the Pays d'Auge area of Normandy in 1960. The house sat on a farm with an apple orchard and Drouin Sr. harvested the apples on his estate in hopes of seeing a return. He was disappointed to find that the price for apples was so low that he wouldn't even recoup harvesting expenses, so he held onto his fruit and sought an alternative solution. His friend, Pierre Pivet, had a mobile still and would travel to various farms to distill cider into calvados. He agreed to advise Drouin on pressing his apples into cider and distilling the cider into calvados, teaching him the art from start to finish. Thanks to Pivet, even the earliest bottlings from the company were of a consistent and high quality. For the next twenty years, Drouin dived headfirst into the distillation process, before putting eux-de-vie aside for aging. Ever since, the family business has continued to blossom with his grandson, Guillaume now at the forefront of production and business management.

Other reviews... For All the gimmicky limited editions and well overpriced rums with little age or pedigree they have finally managed to make one good rum. I was very sceptical when finding out about the world drink awards they had won and purchased a 3 pack of their award winners directly. Containing one mdc, one small batch and the solera. The first 2 would taste fine drowned in cola like every rum they have made to date but then there is the solera. I have multiple rums at twice the price that are nowhere near as good as this. At under 200 aud a bottle this is one to stock up on. A very UN Bundy kind of rum. A smooth sipper, expertly blended no doubt, sweet molasses, vanilla and Christmas pudding. Totally unexpected. A real credit to who ever blended this. It's about as good as it gets. Around the same price as zacapa xo but this has the edge as far as $170+ soleras go. We're used to seeing the Elements series in 500ml formats. This bottling upgrades drinkers to 700ml. It's part of a new core trilogy of blended malts introduced in 2022 (the others are 'Cask Edit' and 'Bourbon Cask'). Matured in first-fill and refill sherry butts and hogsheads and combining whiskies from the north and south of Islay before bottling at a hearty strength, components are kept secret, but just looking at the bottle tells you everything you need; there are the expected aromas of sweet peat reek, joined by raisin cake, prunes, dried orange peel and baking spice, followed by a massive flavour drive that adds lanolin, walnut brownies, maritime salinity and chimney soot. Chilli-infused dark chocolate, smokey dates and trace iodine finish off this impressive blending effort that also comes non chill-filtered. 54.5% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Nose: obviously more sherried, with a rather dry profile on tobacco leaves, dark chocolate and Lapsang tea. Cigar boxes and hints of black peppercorns. Quite aromatic. Arbroath smokie sits alongside aromatic notes of lemon oil, ginger root and a hint of menthol. Palate: Rich and unctuous. Dark-chocolate-dipped candied orange slices and chunks of crystalised stem ginger. Muscovado sugar syrup provides a sticky, dark drizzle over date-studded ginger cake. Sweet smoke and dried autumn fruits sit in the background. Finish: Treacle toffee and smoky black tea, sweetened by dark brown sugar. A long, sweet, rich and spicy finish.

Released in early 2022 but only recently landed in Australia, the highly allocated Traigh Bhan Batch TB/04-07.03.2003/22.CG continues a running theme, with a lengthy maturation in a combination of American oak and oloroso sherry casks - although the proportion of the latter is slightly increased in this edition. Bottled in much smaller quantities than the rest of the core range "under a full moon", as noted on the front label, it arrives non chill filtered at 46.2% Alc./Vol.
Traigh Bhan is now firmly in collector-land. Consequently, few tasting notes are available. If you're looking to add to your collection or just want to find out what well-aged Ardbeg tastes like, don't hesitate on this offer. For those new to the label, the name is a reference to the local Traigh Bhan beach on Islay, which is known as the 'Singing Sands'. Each batch is intended to be slightly different from the last due to minor changes in cask selection. Expect rich wood smoke and menthol alongside bolder flavours of cayenne pepper and aniseed.
Notes from the producers... NOSE: On the nose, rising aromas of herbal pine and fennel flow into sharp notes of citrusy lime sorbet and medicinal lozenge, while eucalyptus and saddle soap follow on the breeze. A splash of water releases a cascade of hazelnut, sweet vanilla, and currants, before rich minted chocolate brings the nose to a close. TASTE: An intense wave of wood smoke crashes over the palate, leaving ripples of decadent dark chocolate and ground coffee in its wake. Sweeter notes of lemon curd and peanut brittle cut through the swell to reveal delicate hints of creamy raisin fudge and hazelnut. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

The 2021 Marienburg Spätlese is pure, bright and flinty on the reductive but fruit-intense and concentrated nose. Round, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a refined and saline, very delicate and stimulating Spätlese with a pure and salivating finish. It's young but digestible due to a rather moderate dose of sulfur. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Drink 2026 - 2050.

The 2020er Riesling vom blauen Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from early pickings in the blue-slate sector (Fahrlay) of the Pündericher Marienburg. It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, pear, a hint of earthy spices, wet stone, floral elements, and smoke. The wine proves juicy rather than bone-dry on the palate, where riper flavors play with one’s senses. The finish is still slightly rough and backward. This wine now only needs a few years of patience to fully shine. It could then easily exceed our early high expectations especially as it reveals its superbly floral and fresh array of flavors. Disgorged in March 2021 with one gram per liter dosage, Renoir's new NV Solera Les Années derives from a solera established in 2013. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, dried white flowers, mandarin orange, white cherries and freshly baked bread, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and vinous, with a bright spine of acidity, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish. Youthfully tightly wound, I can't wait to see how it performs with a few years on cork. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Continuing to the palate, it is saturated and full-bodied, with its pillowing mousse creating a weightless feel before it becomes more savory, with notable salinity, a glycerol-rich texture, and notes of citrus oils. The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des 2 Freres raises the quality bar higher, offering scents of cedar, dried spices and black cherries. A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Serine (Syrah), aged in new barrels, it's full-bodied, rich and plush in feel, finishing long and velvety. I've said this before, but it bears repeating—I'm not usually a fan of maturing Grenache in small-format new oak vessels, but it seems to work in this case, resulting in a wine that's somehow dessert-rich, yet savory and not overbearing, with a soft, almost pillowy impression on the palate. The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Réserve Des Deux Freres is almost all Grenache but includes a tiny parcel of very old vine Serine Syrah from Charbonniere. This deep purple-hued effort boasts a killer nose of blackberries, cassis, spicy wood, graphite, and ground pepper, among other Provençal nuances. Pure, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, it has building yet perfectly ripe tannins, the vintage’s more elegant, streamlined style, and a great finish. It's beautifully done and will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and keep for 15 to 20 years. Drink 2022 - 2042.

Depending on your source, his own malt forms the base (1-3 year old Chichibu), combined with 3-5 year old whiskies from Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the US. The composition is vatted in two 5000-litre wooden barrels built by renowned French cooper, Taransaud. Non chill filtration and a decent ABV contribute added depth and mouthfeel resulting in a quintessential example of Japanese blending skill that's also food-friendly. 46.5% Alc./Vol.

Thomas Bouley is very much the insiders secret, more famous with his fellow vignerons than with collectors chasing the next 'superstar' seen on social media. That Thomas resists putting his name on the front label of his wines (preferring to keep his father's) is typical of his humble and low key approach. Based in Volnay may also add to his relative anonymity, however we suspect this is changing rapidly as word gets out of just how spectacular his wines are, and of the continual improvement seen since he began working with his father in the early 2000's.
Meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery are notable here, and key to why Thomas is so highly regarded by his peers. Yields are moderate, and in the cellar whole cluster ferments are used more with his clay rich sites (Pommard Fremiers, Volnay Clos des Chenes), while those with thin white soils (Pommard Rugiens-Hauts, Volnay Caillerets) are largely destemmed. New oak use is minimal, and each wine spend two winters on fine lees before bottling.

Aromas of raspberries and plums mingled with hints of orange rind, sweet spices and forest floor introduce Bouley's 2019 Volnay Village, a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless wine that's lively and penetrating, concluding with a long, saline finish. As I've written before, this cuvée blends the rich, clay soils of lieux-dits Poisots, Famines and Cros Martin with the thinner, whiter soils of Ez Blanches above the Clos de Chênes; but in 2019, the wine's tone is set by Ez Blanches, even if it only amounts to one-third of the blend. The 2019 Volnay Village has wonderful precision on the nose with red berry fruit and light undergrowth scents. The palate is clean and precise, quite Pommard like in terms of structure, fanning out nicely and with confidence on the finish. Very fine. Drink 2024-2038.

Thomas Bouley is very much the insiders secret, more famous with his fellow vignerons than with collectors chasing the next 'superstar' seen on social media. That Thomas resists putting his name on the front label of his wines (preferring to keep his father's) is typical of his humble and low key approach. Based in Volnay may also add to his relative anonymity, however we suspect this is changing rapidly as word gets out of just how spectacular his wines are, and of the continual improvement seen since he began working with his father in the early 2000's.
Meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery are notable here, and key to why Thomas is so highly regarded by his peers. Yields are moderate, and in the cellar whole cluster ferments are used more with his clay rich sites (Pommard Fremiers, Volnay Clos des Chenes), while those with thin white soils (Pommard Rugiens-Hauts, Volnay Caillerets) are largely destemmed. New oak use is minimal, and each wine spend two winters on fine lees before bottling.

Deeper pitched than the more ethereal Clos de la Cave, Bouley's 2019 Volnay Vieilles Vignes exhibits aromas of plums and dark berries mingled with raw cocoa and sweet spices. It's medium to full-bodied, deep and velvety, and it's denser and richer than the other communal appellations in the cellar, with an elegantly muscular profile and a long, resonant finish. Here there is a lovely elegance to the cool, high-toned and airy aromas of spicy red berry fruit. There is better energy to the delicious saline-inflected flavors that culminate in a markedly firm, youthfully austere and very serious finish. The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards has turned out especially well. Opening in the glass with aromas of red berries and plums mingled with sweet soil tones, hints of raw cocoa and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with terrific concentration and beautifully refined tannins. Boillot observes, and I agree, that this site's tannins have become much more refined over the last five years. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The 2019 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru immediately hits a level up from Les Angles, offering scents of vibrant red berry fruit, sous-bois and a hint of morels, all delineated and focused. There is much more brightness and energy on the palate of black plum, raspberry and allspice, leading to a nicely structured, quite peppery finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. Drink 2023-2038.

The rich, full-bodied and imposingly scaled flavors possess excellent size, weight and power while delivering first-rate length on the austere finale. This equally firm effort isn't quite as complex as the Fremiers, at least not today, though that may well change with time in bottle. Drink from 2034+.

A much spicier combination is built from notes of both red and dark currant with lovely violet, lavender and rose petal nuances. As is always the case, the mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer with excellent detail that also characterizes the surprisingly powerful but balanced and wonderfully long finale. This overtly stony effort is really quite classy and a wine that should age gracefully for years. Drink from 2031+.

The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru felt comparatively closed following after the Les Brouillards, offering aromas of tightly wound, earthy black fruit mixed with autumn leaves. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip on the entry. This is a structured, burly Les Caillerets, although it needs a little more precision and tension on the finish, which feels slightly blunt at the moment. Drink 2023-2033.

Whiffs of herbal tea and spice add breadth to the cool, ripe and well-layered nose of various dark berries along with ample amounts of earth and sauvage nuances. There is excellent punch suffusing the succulent but powerful medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in an almost painfully intense and hugely long finish. I really like the texture as this is generous yet very clearly constituted for extended cellaring. As it often is, this is the best wine in the range and with the most development potential. Drink from 2034+.

The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that frame the lightly spiced red fruit and just a hint of black pepper and curry leaf on the persistent finish. Superb. Drink 2023-2040.
