2018 Claxton's Exploration Series Bunnahabhain 4 Year Old Single Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenIf this was average malt, you could accuse Claxton's of taking advantage bottling at such an extraordinarily young age. It is slightly green on the nose, but no question it's Bunnah' from the first whiff. There is a signature purity that follows onto the palate: Cream tea biscuits, semi-ripe pears, a trace of brine and mineral, wrapped up in an oily/waxy succulence that reminds you of good Inchgower or perhaps Pulteney. Thankfully it's unpeated, and from a fresh Bourbon barrel - so you get a full showing. When your distillate is this good, the question of age statements almost seems irrelevant. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Ardbeg Heavy Vapours Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 46%Ardbeg's latest annual offering comes with a curious title that's due to a production modification. Head of Whisky Creation, Bill Lumsden removed the purifier, which typically catches the heaviest vapours from the distillation process. The purifier is also responsible for Ardbeg’s balance between extreme peat and floral fruitiness. The resulting whisky is "all peat". In fact, Ardbeg says that it's their most full-blown expression ever with an intensity of flavour that's unmatched. A spokesperson for the brand describes the flavour profile as, "Defined by a distinctive pungent earthiness, aromatic clouds of dark chocolate, a billow of aniseed and cinnamon, and a lingering tang of sharp peppermint." Dramface.com add "According to an interview Lumsden participated in for WhiskyCast, the experiment which gave birth to this year’s release was conducted 12 years ago. Even allowing for time of year and the time taken to dump casks, blend, package and distribute, it’s safe to assume this bottling is at least 11 years old, given that Lumsden claims the experiment was only ever conducted in one batch." We've just received our allocation. The whisky's unusual conception is brought to life with accompanying graphics created by celebrated comic artist and illustrator, Dilraj Mann.
The nose is slightly reticent while the flavour profile leans towards smokey dark chocolate, oily malt, chimney soot and white pepper followed by a dried herbal quality. The aftertaste is ashy, drying, medium long and vaguely fruity in a mezcal kind of way. Like last year's Ardbeg Day release (Ardcore), Heavy Vapours is not quite as intense or complex as anticipated, although it does taste slightly more mature and feels like the texture is amplified, particularly at the finish where cured meats and a salt'n'pepper tang recall middle-weight Caol Ilas. In a word, more elegant than "extreme". 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... I don’t know enough about the role of the purifier in distillation to predict for myself how the lack of one might impact a finished whisky, but damn if I’m not willing to give it a try. So let’s sally forth. Reviewed here is the standard release at 92 proof. The Committee Release is bottled at 100.4 proof. Extremely light in color, even for Ardbeg, the whisky looks innocuous enough in the glass. The classic aroma of beach bonfire smoke of Ardbeg wafts immediately from the glass, tempered by light touches of milk chocolate, overripe fruit, and some salted caramel — though these are all difficult to parse in the wake of a moderately intense blast of peat. The palate does see a more complex complement of flavors coming into focus, including mint, a clearer tropical note — pineapples and some coconut — with plenty of ashy dustiness waiting in the wings. Strangely, all of this works together in a bizarrely compelling fashion, the peat becoming earthy and smoldering, any overt smokiness taking a back seat as fruity sweetness makes a stronger impact. A briny quality offers a surprising level of refreshment on the finish, pairing well with both fruit and lingering smokiness. For my money, this is considerably more classically balanced than the standard Ardbeg bottlings — though what exactly is meant by “balance” in the world of peated Scotch is open for interpretation. ...More NAS and more stories. I mean, really, stories, about that purifier we keep mentioning here too, and a certain 'agent 46'.. There's a QR code on the presentation box and bottle that should have allowed us to follow that 'agent 46' but from France it seems that we're just led to the generic Ardbeg website. Anyway, this is young Ardbeg that's been distilled 'without' the purifier on, as many batches have in the past already, but this very one is supposed to be 'the most full-blown Ardbeg ever'. Let's check that now… Colour: very pale white wine. Nose: very pure and feeling ultra-young, totally on mash, smoked beer, green pears, stewed turnip, creosote, petrichor and our new favourite since we've tried some in the Schwarzwald only two days ago, topinambour (Jerusalem artichoke) eau-de-vie or Schnaps, which is very rooty and earthy indeed. Mouth: excellent, if a tad rough and probably immature. More Jerusalem artichoke and turnip, smoky mashes and washes, a feinty side indeed and then certainly more fruitiness (so much for the purifier been shunted). Apples, lemon liqueur, light honey (acacia), liquorice allsorts and a drop of pastis. A moderate saltiness and notes of sweet beetroot too. Finish: pretty longer, fruity and salty. Comments: did they not just invent peated pastis? As a matter of fact, it would take a lot of water with resolve and even desire (what?) but it's not really heavy, I'd have called it 'Mizuwari Reserve' or 'Islay Pastis' instead. Dense pitch black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Ripe blackcurrant, liquorice and black cherry scents flood the nostrils followed by some toasty cedar, earthy tobacco and spicy dried herb notes. Rich, dense and powerful, this is a hefty, full bodied Bordeaux which boasts a concentrate of blackcurrant, liquorice and black cherry fruits framed by a robust tannin structure. Scorched earth, vanillin cedar and spicy tobacco elements lie underneath. Finishes firm and chewy with a grippy feel lingering across the long opulent finish.

A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Clos du Roy offers up aromas of dark berries, flowers and licorice intertwined with delicate oaky notes. It’s an incredibly impressive Fronsac that has the fruit and texture to shine today as well as the balance and structure to evolve for 10-12+ years. Drink 2025-2037.

2022 Clos Haut PeyragueySauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenClosure: CorkClos Haut-Peyraguey traces its origins to the seventeenth century, when it formed part of the same large Sauternes estate as Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey, before being separated in the late nineteenth century with the highest and best-situated parcels retained as Clos Haut-Peyraguey. The name Peyraguey, derived from the local word for hill, reflects its elevated position in the commune of Bommes, where the vineyard sits among the highest slopes of the appellation, close to Chateau d'Yquem. The 21-hectare estate, classified as a Premier Cru in 1855 and notable as the smallest of the top-ranked properties at the time, is planted predominantly to Semillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc on gravel, sand and clay soils. Vinification and ageing take place in French oak, with maturation in up to 50 percent new barrels, producing a classically structured Sauternes that reflects both its altitude and historic pedigree.

The 2022 Clos Haut-Peyraguey is laced with scents of tangerine oil, mint, white flowers and ripe green pear. Creamy and unctuous, but not at all heavy, the 2022 is showing beautifully today. All the elements are so well balanced in this classy, understated Sauternes from Bernard Magrez. Yields were just 9 hectoliters per hectare. Tasted two times. Drink 2025-2042.

The wine is produced and bottled with extremely low levels of sulfur. You can enjoy this young, or age it for more complexity, The wine blends 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Cabernet Franc. This is the first vintage with this much Cabernet in the blend. 14.5% ABV. 3.4 pH. The yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2026-2050.

Pietro Ratti calls the site a Grand Cru of La Morra. The wine is aged in French oak barriques in its first year and is then transferred to large Slavonian oak casks for its second year of maturation.

Lots of dried flowers here give a perfumed nature to it with berries and citrus. Hibiscus water, too. Full-bodied and chewy with lots of tannins and vivid acidity. Subtle plum and strawberry character. Muscular and formed. This needs time. Try after 2028.

This is the first release of Serradenari from Ratti, and it's one of the highest MGAs at around 500 metres – the estate harvested it after Rocche dell'Annunziata. Indeed, this Barolo could seem to be a Langhe for its elegant lightness to the fore. Very pale ruby in colour, it's reductive with notes of cinnamon root, camphor, a balsamic character, and some peachy fruit. Super-fresh and with firm, chewy tannins on a light frame, it's well handled thanks to the combination of both large oak vessels and barrique. A bit rustic at the end. Drink: 2023-2035.

Ripe with toasted cedar, sour cherry, incense, and orange peel, this medium to full-body red offers a rounded mid-palate with a sheen of ripe tannins and oak spice. It is ample in structure, but not weighted, with angular tannins and fresh acidity, while clove, raspberry seed, and tobacco fill the palate. It feels a bit heavy-handed with its barrel usage right now for my taste and needs another couple of years to integrate. Drink 2025-2040.

This is Barton 1792 distillery’s first-ever wheated Bourbon, where the wheat replaces rye as the ‘spice’ ingredient (similar to Weller and Maker’s Mark). It's only been available in Australia sporadically. Once again, we've received a tiny allocation. 45.6% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Easy to drink, reasonably priced for its quality, and has a creamy mouthfeel that will ultimately become its most memorable trait. 1792 Sweet Wheat is a gentle, easy-to-drink wheated bourbon. Its palate is pleasing with its traditional bourbon flavors and semi-sweet notes. It also has a good amount of oak on its palate. This actually might be a determent for some expecting a sweet-forward profile based on the bourbon's name, with the oak notes probably countering what might have been a far sweeter bourbon. Some tannic notes also find their way into the mix, and while they don’t taint the experience much, I would have liked less of them. 1792 Sweet Wheat doesn’t far exceed the quality found in other similar priced wheated bourbon, but it does what it does well, and is priced reasonably for what it is. - breakingbourbon.com

Extended cask ageing in Vila Nova de Gaia brings layered complexity and mellow spice.

A step up on the tawny ladder, reflected by the paler tawny colour and copperish tones on the rim; a touch singed on the nose with roasted coffee and an undertone of crème brûlée on the nose and palate (queimada in Portuguese). Concentrated butterscotch sweetness, a touch honeyed but not cloying as the acidity cuts in and offsets this, leading to a long, beautifully poised finish.

Firm muscular yet fresh feel with a long robust aftertaste.

As part of its program to make single malts available from all five of its distilleries, Bacardi subsidiary, John Dewar & Sons has been releasing a bunch of Brackla age statements since 2015. With a house style that's pedestrian and fruity, this edition offers something unexpected in the form of an Oloroso sherry cask finish. Even more importantly, it's bottled at 46% without chill filtration (the regular stuff weighs in at 40%). Here's just one of many positive customer comments about this whisky online: "... it blows away anything I've tasted from Macallan and at higher cost...probably shouldn't say all this as it might go up in price..."

The flavour focus falls firmly on fruity-nutty Oloroso, so less American oak intrudes to dumb-down the experience. ...Apparently and unless I'm wrong once more, this is the new-new label, even more retro than before. This baby was finished in oloroso wood while the presentation tube would make it clear that it should display 'spice, cherries and demerara'. I believe the mistake they did with the previous rendition (round blue label) was to bottle it at 40% vol. Colour: amber. Nose: and voilà, butterscotch, praline, roasted chestnuts, chocolate (creamy Lindt's), nougat and cappuccino. No one can be against this, even if this smart treatment may have erased a part of the Distillery character. I do find gooseberries in the background, having said that. Mouth: I could copy-and-paste what I have jotted down about the nose. Milk chocolate, roasted nuts, marmalade, toffee… St. Oloroso, pray for us. Finish: rather long, very good. This fine-tuned blend of old wines going back to the 1970s is one to sip, admire, meditate and marvel.

It became fashionable to infuse the fruits in cognac and to drink the results. Napoleon was himself partial to such drinks and frequently invited one of its greatest exponents, Antoine-Francois du Fourcroy, to indulge in the beverage. It is said to be Fourcroy's formula with which Napoleon wooed his favourite actress, Mlle Mars.
Fourcroy's "Mandarine Napoleon" is now manufactured by the internationally renowned Belgian company which bears his name. The liqueur is made by macerating mandarine peel in selected fine brandies. After maceration and distillation, the spirit is compounded with the flavour and sweetened to produce a lightly flavoured unique product. Mandarine Napoleon today forms a classic base for a whole range of drinks and cocktails. It also makes a very pleasant summer long drink when mixed with tonic or orange juice. 38% alc./vol.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards in the area, with its steep blue slate slopes and eponymous sundial a beacon for the area. Wines from here are often some of the finest and most elegant expressions of Riesling, and with age further express their mineral slate origins.

Erdener Prälat is perhaps the greatest vineyard in the Mosel region. It benefits from its 45° slope with perfect southern exposure, red slate soil and proximity to the river. All these factors, combined with its position below huge, heat-retaining cliffs, explain why Dr. Loosen never harvests anything less than Auslese ripeness from this site.

His enviable vineyard holdings total nearly 11 hectares spread across Meursault, Monthelie, Pommard and Auxey-Duresses. Organic farming has been practiced here since 1998 for the 40 plots of vines that the family owns. Average vine age is impressive with more than 60% of vines over 60 years old.
Les Luchets lies above the village quite high on the slope, which is where many of the younger vignerons favour for cooler more mineral wines terroir and better natural acidity.

The palate is round and playful, almost silky and very elegant, leading to an intense and sustainably saline and tangy finish with fine grip and good tension. There have been a number of releases of HP 30 over the years, each with slightly different packaging and ABVs. This one was reportedly released around 2013. When Highland Park's robust and oily new make gets extended time in a high proportion of refill and first-fill sherry European and American oak casks, the resulting flavour profile is astonishingly complex. Expect the fudgy sweetness found in the more mature expressions, paired with layers of aromatic spice, dark chocolate orange and floral peat notes. 45.7% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... This edition is nothing short of an exquisite whisky. There’s no modern cask manipulation nor hasty finishing here – just great distillate filled into great casks which have then been highly sympathetically integrated after three decades of patience. Whilst the age of the whisky is apparent throughout with a palpable sense of highly polished oak - this never detracts from the fruity core of the spirit which runs from nose through to finish. The smoke influence is but a mere memory here - you’ll need to dig to find it - so if you like your heathery peat prominent this will not tick that box for you. However, as far as elegance and equipoise go – there is not a large number of whiskies of this style which will better this. - thedramble.com

That doesn't mean great whisky is easily come by. Every barrel is different. Only a handful attain a singular classification - and that's if you can find and bottle them at just the right time. When Amrut's Head of Distilling, Ashok Chokalingam visited with a sample of 'Sherry butt #38977', it was clear it had become something of a pet project. Mollycoddled until the end, he didn't want to filter the whisky but didn't want all of the sediment either, so he 'dripped in' the required amount of water to cut it to 60%, one drop at a time over three days. The water pulled the sediment to the bottom and the liquid was syphoned into bottles. Utmost care was taken to retain all of the fats and oils that would have been lost via filtration, which is what gives this such a terrific mouthfeel. The rest is down to an extraordinary barrel. One taste and it dawns on you why Ashok and the importers fell in love with this particular cask: Sherry almost hits perfection. The aroma opens with classic Oloroso notes of fig and raisin before roasted nuts and cocoa become palpable as the fruit sweetness fades. The flavour explosion happens in slow motion, with Oloroso carried on a wave of creamy malt, capped off by mixed peels, orange chocolate, leather, walnut cake and a fanfare of allspice. A biscuity-saline edge adds interest (possibly from the lightly peated barley) before the sherry gets a second wind, significantly extending the aftertaste. Not only encapsulating the general excellence of this distillery, Butt #3897 demonstrates how some single casks - regardless of age - justify a premium when they outperform bottlings with much bigger age statements. Filled in July 2015 and decanted in December 2022, 216 bottles are on offer exclusively to Australia. 60% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Delicious pear, lime and green apple fruits are underscored by crunchy acidity with subtle infusions of fresh herbs and stony mineral elements ensuing. Finishes dry with a long scrumptious aftertaste.

Glenfiddich Perpetual Collection Vat 01 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 40%The Perpetual series was unveiled in mid 2022 as travel retail exclusives. Four whiskies showing off the distillery’s signature solera vat maturation process make up the range. The vat system never runs dry. Instead, a portion is removed and the remainder is topped up with fresh liquid. This allows the latest batch to take on some characteristics of the older product. The process originated from Spanish sherry production, which Glenfiddich’s fifth Malt Master, David Stewart adapted in 1998 to produce their core 15-year-old single malt. According to him, it allows whisky from different casks to better integrate. Only half the whisky in Glenfiddich’s large solera vats is bottled at any one time.
Of the four malts in the Perpetual Collection, the most easily approached is Vat 01, a combination of Bourbon and wine cask-matured whiskies that's sweet, soft, and smooth. Glenfiddich have honed the style over the decades and in this bottling, they've perfected the art of delivering a 40% abv whisky with character or depth. Admittedly, its predictable fusion of creamy, biscuity malt and subtle nashi pear fruitiness resembles many other Glenfiddichs, but when you just want a decent dram at a fair price, consistency and reliability is often a big part of the equation. Incentivise further with a one-litre format and you have an easy buying decision.
Aged in Spanish sherry casks, Vat 02 presents a more complex and luscious character. Both have no age statements. The 15-year-old Vat 03 showcases Glenfiddich’s signature style. Matured in European oak sherry and Bourbon casks, it's silky and full-bodied delivering warm notes of spice, nutty marzipan, and dried figs. The final in the series is also deemed the most extravagant. Vat 04 is treated in oloroso sherry and Bourbon casks for 18 years for a deeper profile.
Notes from the producers... Beautifully fragrant and floral. Summer blossom notes with hints of creamy vanilla toffee and subtle oakiness. A touch of zesty citrus in the background. TASTE: Very soft and mellow with a lovely balance of oak and the trademark Glenfiddich character. Layers of sweetness and spice with hints of freshly ground pepper. FINISH: Delicate and smooth.

Vinification includes a 5 hours cold maceration before fermentaiton in stainless steel, before being pressed to barrel for 18 months in oak, 20% of which are new.

Pierre Boisson forms this Auxey-Duresses from two premier cru parcels in Le Bretterin and Le Reugne with an average vine age of 40 years. Vinification includes a five-day cold soak followed by fermentation in stainless-steel vats with pumpovers and pigeage. The wine is settled over 10 days before being run to barrel for 18 months maturation in oak, 20% of which are new. Bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.

Tres Tribus Ensamble Joven Mezcal (700ml)Oaxaca, MEXICO$124. 99Bottle$1499.88 DozenABV: 44%A small batch mezcal hand-crafted by fifth generation Mezcalero, Juan Antonio Coronel and named after the three tribes of Oaxaca. 'Ensamble' simply means it's made from a combination of agaves rather than a single variety. Because Coronel insists on traditional methods, his agaves are allowed to grow for years, sometimes decades, until they're fully mature. In this case, the blend includes wild Salmiana ranging from 15 up to 35 years old, wild Jabalí averaging between 10 and 15 years old, and farmed Espadins harvested at around 8 years. The agave hearts are roasted according to traditional methods. Local water combined with wild yeasts kick start the week-long fermentation in clay jars. Distillation takes place in a still designed and hand-built by Coronel using copper and local elements from the region. He also has a replanting program that replenishes agave harvested in the wild as well as trees used in the production process; For every wild agave he cuts, he replants four new ones. Coronel's 'Ensamble' opens with soft, approachable scents developing a sweet, earthy edge suggesting wet clay, lucerne mulch, dried thyme and white pepper. Those notes are echoed by beautifully integrated flavours in an oily-yet-tangy, agave driven mid-palate that gives way to mesquite smoke, white chocolate and hints of bicycle tube, trailing off in a fruity, pepper and brine finish. It's a terrific assemblage to enjoy on its own, but one that should also make a strong contribution to cocktails. 44% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Alluring notes of jasmine, mango and honey with a delicate minerality. The mid-palate of cooked agave showcases a toasty elegance as well as hints of stone fruit with a long finish of citrus and earthy flavors. Fantastic sipped alongside fresh and zingy food, it'll also make a great Mezcal Manhattan.

In an era of escalating prices on big age-statement, sherry matured malts, Glenfarclas continues to buck market trends offering a seriously old whisky at a reasonable price. Rumoured to have been introduced due to dwindling stocks of the 40 year old, this is a relatively new member of the Glenfarclas family, and we're told, an extremely limited one at that; (at the time of writing, it's not even listed on the distillery's website). As with the increasingly hard-to-find 30 and 40YOs, the 35 was drawn from Spanish oak ex-sherry casks and comes presented in an eye-catching red box, reminiscent of the distillery's iconic warehouse doors. The liquid inside promises decadent flavours of toffee, chocolate and dried fruits in a silky, medium bodied dram. 43% Alc./Vol.

This single vineyard Shiraz comes from an old vineyard in Marananga planted in 1958, a plot which remains the focus of envy amongst many of the region's winemakers. Previously owned and operated by the legendary Malcolm Seppelt, the vineyard was purchased by Torbreck in 2014 and is perfectly sited with the dry grown, original Barossa clone vines facing south east. The berries are typically small and concentrated and usually harvested in two separate passes.
The French oak selected for the maturation of this wine is considered to be some of the finest in the world. Referred to as Dominique Laurent's 'Magic Casks', the wood is selected from the incredibly tiny and highly prized Troncais forest. The staves are hand split in the French tradition and twice as thick as machine split staves.
As a result of the extra thickness the barrels are able to sustain an extended maturation process due to the tighter porosity that comes with the extra wood.
Maturation took place in the new hand crafted French oak barriques for a period of 36 months. The barrels were stored in their own temperature controlled, ancient stone shed. In short, no expense has been spared.
Dense inky black heart with a very deep black dark red hue. Soaring out of the glass are potent ripe blackberry, liquorice, black cherry and dark chocolate aromas that are totally intoxicating. Also chiming in are toasty vanilln oak, earthy mocha, hints of new leather and pepper. About as concentrated and powerful as a wine can get, it boasts out of this world richness, decadence and power along with a liqueur like density. Mouth coating flavours of lush blackberry, liquorice and black cherry stain the palate backed by a firm muscular tannin structure that is largely absorbed by the sheer weight of voluptuous fruit. Toasty vanillin oak, earthy mocha characters, traces of boot polish and pepper lend further complexity. Finishes exceptionally long, deep and opulent.
Drink over the next 10-20 years.

Single-vineyard wines that are at the behest and mercy of the seasons are very exciting to view over time. You understand the essence of the style of the wine and the vineyard DNA, so you sit, patiently waiting for the vintages and seasons that meet your personal proclivities to roll around. The 2018 vintage is one of those for me, as will be the cool 2021 and 2022 seasons. The fruit is sourced from the Gnadenfrei vineyard, which was planted in 1958, in Marananga. The fruit was picked over a variety of picks at optimal ripeness and matured for 36 months in new French oak barriques by Dominique Laurent. Eminently red-fruited in the mouth, this 2018 The Laird is reflective of the 2018 season, in that it is pure, fresh, laden with blood plum, saturated in red berries and framed by savory, exotically spiced black tannins. The oak, while a prominent feature of the wine, supports the fruit at all times and assists in extending the flavor through the finish. Thick in the mouth, yet still fresh, there is a moreish quality to this wine. I love it. (It is likely unnecessary to tell you that the wine is incredibly full-bodied. It is enveloping and huge but wonderful.) Drink 2023-2053.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateIt is funny how truly great wines make me think of another other than wine. When I first inhaled the scent of 2018 The Laird, I heard music, which was somewhat unnerving. The phenomenal perfume here conjured up Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave – a distant musical memory from my youth. I have never seen this famous sea cave firsthand, so I searched for it on my phone while diving into this glass. If this wine looks like any marine geological formation, it must be this incredible cavern on the uninhabited island of Staffa. It is fantastic to think that Mendelssohn sat in a boat, off Staffa, in 1829 and penned a couple of bars of music inspired by this cave. Some 15 years later, the first vines were planted in Barossa. I suppose it is somewhat of a tradition for me not to bang on about fruit, flowers, herbs and spices when writing about tremendously moving wines preferring to take my readers to a more emotional place in the hope that they are moved enough to seek out the subject of my musings. In this instance, I cannot get over my Fingal’s Cave spark, and I think it sums up the absurdly deep and never-ending joy that this sublime wine imbues in its taster. Drink 2030 – 2050.
