The 2020 Valandraud is a stunner. Rich, deep and explosive, the 2020 possesses dazzling intensity from start to finish. Silky tannins wrap around a core of plush dark red/black fruit, licorice, spice, mocha and new leather. Even with all of its intensity, the 2020 is bright and wonderfully focused. Sweet floral and blood orange accents liven up the explosive finish. Magnificent. Drink 2028-2060.

Very opulent and expressive aromas of black fruit and pine needles. So floral. Full-bodied with plush, velvety tannins and lots of fruit and texture. It goes on for minutes. Rich at the finish, but remains fresh and vivid. Superb. One of the great Valandrauds. Drink after 2027.

One of the wines of the vintage is Jean-Luc Thunevin's 2020 Château Valandraud, which comes from the cooler, eastern side of Saint-Emilion. Exhibiting a dense purple hue as well as an incredible perfume of crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, violets, new leather, and an almost Hermitage-like burning embers character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe, seamless tannins, remarkable purity of fruit, and a finish that won't quit. A blend of 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it's clearly in the same league as the 2019, if not slightly more concentrated. Give bottles 5-7 years in the cellar, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 20-25 years or so. Drink: 2028 - 2053.

Juicy and alive, a brightness to this even though the fruits are dark in profile - blackcurrant, black cherry, herbal-tinged blueberries - heady and seductive. Layers of acidity, mint, freshness and toast combine to give quite a full and complex palate with everything at the fore yet staying the right side of being too much. Strong and characterful but totally charming. I love the St-Emilion glamour and muscle, softly flexing with a salty minerality and unmistakable signature. Drink 2027 - 2046.

This is the follow-up to the legendary 1995, and is only just being released. Intense roasted hazelnut and nougat bouquet, lots of aged characters and very, very complex. While the house of Vaudon produce ‘multi-cru’ blends in combination with Grande Champagne, the heart of the operation is focused on a single cru: Fins Bois, the largest of Cognac's regions. Ugni Blanc vines are planted in light soils made from hard, superficial calcareous clay that bring body and softness to the eaux de vie. Fin Bois cognacs are known to age quickly, developing spice and liquorice notes early on. This is Vaudon's entry-level offering. Amid its stone-fruit fragrance and soft, delicate mouthfeel you'll also find hints of vanilla, fresh pears and fennel. Present day custodians, Anne-Marie Vaudon and Pierre Vaudon continue the family's history and know-how that began in 1771. 40% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Attack is supple and delicate, a well-known signature from good Fins Bois Cognac’s. A beautiful marriage between a white fruit basket and slight notes of liquorice. The Fins Bois eaux-de-vie bring interesting flavours of fresh berries sustained with an important vanilla ambiance completed by a bouquet with fruits notes like pear or apricot, a beautiful harmony.

Y d'Yquem (Ygrec) is the rare, dry wine from Chateau d'Yquem. Historically Y was made in the years when the season didn't allow for sufficient accumulation of botrytis, but since 2004 the decision was made to make the wine each vintage. Differing from the sweet wine, Y is composed of predominantly Sauvignon Blanc (75%) with the balance Semillon, harvested early in the season, before being matured in barrel (one third new) for approximately ten months.

The 2022 Riesling Roche Granitique was harvested in the Brand Grand Cru. The nose is clear as a bell with a touch of smoke and a strafe of citrus, but essentially shy. The palate is clear, bright and shining, with a spectrum of plum, from greengage via Reine Claude to Mirabelle. This is fresh, wonderfully stony, zesty, streamlined and pervasive. It's almost incisive, with just a touch of pepper on the finish and a lovely feel of grapefruit zest. (Bone-Dry). Drink 2024-2045.

Picked very late in the middle of September, the 2022 Clos Windsbuhl Hunawihr Riesling offers a very deep, rich and intense, lime and limestone-driven bouquet that is very distinctive, rich, coolish, fresh and citric. Round and generous on the palate, this is a powerful, complex, very salivating Windsbuhl Riesling with the generosity and finesse (also in terms of acidity) of a grand cru and a lemon-fresh (and bitter) finish The wine is wide and juicy but also refined and fresh in all its minerality. It is also really rich and potent yet not at all driven by alcohol. The salinity is great here and intertwined with tannins and noble bitters. 4,400 bottles 12.46% stated alcohol. Natural cork. The 2022 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl is a "bucolic" site, Humbrecht says, surrounded by forest and fields at altitude. It is on rocky Triassic limestone. The wine is slightly flinty and nutty on the nose. The palate is stony, too, taut and bright but flowing like clear spring water, cooling, with ever more citrus coming to the fore. Lemon zestiness and lovely brightness make this mouth-puckeringly tangy and deliciously thrilling. (Bone-Dry). Drink 2026-2060.

From a cooler, higher part of the grand cru that is facing east-southeast on rocky, reddish soils, the 2022 Hengst Wintzenheim Riesling opens with a very deep and coolish, intense and complex yet refined and elegant, terroir-driven bouquet with fresh apple puree and spicy and saline terroir notes. Full-bodied, very elegant and not all too rich, this is a dense and well balanced, less racy Riesling than the Clos Häuserer but with a long, intense and finely tannic finish. After 500 liters in the inaugural 2021 vintage, 3,200 bottles plus 170 magnums of the 2022 vintage were filled in January 2024. The vineyard was planted in 2016 with the winery's own selections at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare, which yielded 28 hectoliters per hectare in 2022. 12.83% stated alcohol. Natural cork. The 2022 Riesling Grand Cru Hengst is picked on the eastern side of the Hengst. The parcel was planted in 2016 with high density, and the first vintage of the wine was the 2021. Gorgeously smoky flint precedes subtle floral and tangerine peel notes. The juiciness on the palate is all-encompassing, spreading wonderfully ripe, fresh Mirabelle fruit pervaded by fine, tangerine-like ripe citrus. The 2022 is serene, bright and sunny, with a long, zesty aftertaste. (Bone-Dry). Drink 2026-2050.

Hailing from the shores of Lake Neusiedl in Austria, the third-generation Kracher family produces here high-quality sweet wines, making the most of the surrounding microclimate, particularly favourable to the development of botrytis. The pinnacle of their production falls under the Kracher Collection, created in 1995 to showcase wines made with different grape varieties and sweetness levels at different stages of botrytis development.

The amber-colored 1999 Trockenbeerenauslese No 6 Grande Cuvée Nouvelle Vague (Library Release 2024) is deep, refined and very intense on the nevertheless finessed nose that tends almost toward red wine or Colheita in its toasty and darker-toned fruit aromas that are reminiscent of potted cherries and plums as well as iodine, syrup and chestnut honey. Rich and elegant on the palate, with cedarwood and graphite (pencil tip) notes, this is a highly refined and elegant, very saline, vital and salivating TBA with oatmeal notes on the finish. This is a superb 25-year-old TBA. 10.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2024. Drink: 2025 - 2075.

This 2021 TBA is more pithy and saline, even gastronomic, since it doesn't taste super sweet but spicy and savory. Ménétrières reflects a mix of three soil types, clay, limestone and marl. One of the fuller yellow colours. Almost banana and cream on the nose, high class though. Here the fruit and the crystalline racy character march hand in hand, very well integrated with the oak as well. Waves of flavour course across the palate. Clearly an additional nobility, with a fine backbone and excellent length. 13.5% alcohol. Drink from 2028-2038.

Here the nose is similar to the Perrières but with more floral influence. In contrast to the relatively refined mouthfeel of the Perrières, the notably bigger-bodied flavors are rich, concentrated and powerful with seriously good punch on the strikingly long, balanced and sappy finale. In the context of what is typical for Pouilly-Fuissé, this is a big wine. Drink through 2030+.

The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Ménétrières 1er Cru is more reticent on the nose following on from the Les Perrières. Crushed stone and subtle menthol notes emerge with aeration. Fine delineation (again). The palate is well-balanced with fine depth, but this year, I found more complexity within the Les Perrières, and it needs a little more mineralité on the finish. Nonetheless, it is a well-crafted Pouilly-Fuissé, albeit not best in show this vintage. Drink 2024-2040.

Once again, the Tournant de Pouilly shows a superb backbone, rinsed in lemon and lime, on a very pure white fruit, apples in the orchard, one feels to be hardly touching the potential of this wine. Stunning potential. 13.5% alcohol. Drink from 2028-2040.

The 2022 is pure and quite seductive. The palate is nicely balanced with a keen thread of acidity. It's a little more tensile than the Les Ménétrières this year, with a bright, lightly spiced, persistent finish. Excellent. Drink 2024-2040.

"A glitch in the Ardware" reads the inside of the futuristic presentation box. Welcome to the first in a new limited edition series, created during a milestone year at Ardbeg. Each one will represent a different side of the distillery with no two whiskies alike. ‘Y2K’ is pronounced ‘Year-Two-K’. While the year 2000 will be remembered by many for bootcut jeans, flip phones and the elusive millennium bug, it went down in Ardbeg history for very different reasons. Following decades of neglect, the Distillery had been saved from extinction by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 and meticulously restored. As the clock ticked over from 1999 to 2000, Ardbeg was returning to full production. And while the rest of the world partied, with many distilleries shut down in fear of computerised chaos, its dedicated stillmen stayed up all night to keep the spirit flowing.
Crafted with some of the very first spirit of the millennium, the inaugural edition in the Ardbeg Vintage Y2K series is unlike anything before. It was distilled in the historic still which served Ardbeg for 51 years, before being retired in 2001. And with an increased rigour applied to cask selection under the new ownership, the whisky was laid down in some of the finest bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks around. The result is a single malt jampacked with bright zesty notes and intensely sweet, sooty flavours – a smoky anomaly never to be repeated. Aromas of lemon balsam reminisce with linseed oil and heather honey, while soot and peppermint stir up memories of ground coffee and aniseed on the palate.

Notes from the producers... Colour: Pale amber. On the nose: Herbal, sweet and fragrant, with a distant, subtly fragrant smokiness. A closer look reveals tangy notes of lemon balm, linseed oil and candied walnuts. Theflavourintensifies with a splash ofwater, followed by notes of heather honey, creosote and some tarpaulin. On the palate: A tingling, sorbet-like structure, vibrating on the tongue. The initialflavouris intensely sweet, with a burst of aniseed, toffee, digestive biscuits, peppermint, menthol, tar and coffee grounds. Sooty and tarry flavours then develop. Brandy can justifiably lay claim to the title of South Africa's favourite spirit, selling more than white spirit and whisky markets combined. And so it should. With a heritage dating back to the late 17th century when early Dutch pioneers in the Cape quickly worked out that the typically Mediterranean climate and favourable soils were ideal for growing grapes - wine, and ultimately, brandy was produced. The quality has more than kept pace with demand.
South Africa remains a world-class producer (it’s also one of the few brandy making areas outside Cognac that still conforms to age-old Cognac traditions). The quality/price ratio combined with the range on offer is compelling. The KWV company is a case in point. It first distilled in 1926 and has been receiving praise for its brandies ever since. Master Distiller, Kobus Gelderblom is at the helm. In 2010 KWV was awarded a gold medal for the 20 Year Old Brandy at the London International Spirits Competition (it’s worth noting that only four brandies were awarded golds at the competition). A single estate bottling from KWV was subsequently honoured as “Best Brandy in the World’ by the same group. A remarkable achievement that continues to grow. Gelderblom has a passion for Pinotage with Chardonnay his other preference.
KWV's five year old blends pot still brandy with unaged wine spirits. Its opulent bouquet includes dried figs, raisins, clove and toffee apple. The mouthfeel is plush and soft, mirroring the aromas with flavours of dried figs, Christmas pudding and cafe-creme combined with a gently warming, spicy flourish. It's remarkably well balanced, with a persistence that brings notes of toffee apple and vanilla to the spicy afterglow. A very drinkable all-rounder and great value. 43% Alc./Vol.

A hefty bouquet precedes a heftier delivery. A hard one to nail down but there’s no pronounced peat so if it’s from Springbank it’s a Hazelburn distillate or Glengyle? A slight grittiness to the mouthfeel reminds us of Glen Scotia, as does the slightly prickly attack. The sprite finish is flattened by the sweetness of the wine before a rush of coastal freshness relieves the sugars. Initially the wine input smothers, but it gets better as you go, which brings us back to Springbank… Whatever the mix, it's very characterful. Finished in a muscat cask. 312 bottles for the Australian importer. 54.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

A family owned and run venture, Ellis wines was established in 1999 and for 10 years they sold their fruit off to other wineries before establishing their own label in 2009. In only a relatively short period of time they have built a reputation for producing high quality Heathcote Shiraz grown on the regions famous Cambrian soils. Today the vineyard has grown to over 123.5 acres in size.
Matured in a mixture of French and American oak barrels for 18 months. Pitch black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Potent aniseed, dark plum and black cherry scents fill the nostrils complimented by some toasty vanillin oak, fennel and peppered earth notes. Rich aniseed, dark plum and black cherry fruits carry ample flesh across the medium to full bodied palate with notions of toasty vanillin oak, fennel and peppered earth the underbelly. Sturdy tannin construction with a lengthy finish that has a lingering toasty oak component running through it.

One of Coonawarra’s long standing Estate’s, the Zema family having been crafting wines from their vineyards for nearly 40 years. The family arrived from Italy in 1953 bringing with them a wealth of traditional vineyard practices and experience. In 1982 they purchased their first 20 acre property, located in the heart of the famed terra rossa strip adjacent to Coonawarra landmarks Mildara, Rouge Homme and Wynns. Eight acres were already planted to Shiraz, the remaining 12 acres were subsequently planted to Cabernet Sauvignon.
Matured for 18 months in French oak hogsheads. Dense inky black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Flooding the nostrils are ripe blackcurrant, liquorice and black cherry scents which are pursued by some cedary tobacco, dried herb and earthy bay leaf like notes. Rich, large scaled and formidably structured the full bodied palate is saturated with blackcurrant, liquorice and ripe mulberry fruits. A firm tannin structure asserts its presence lending a grippy feel across the palate. Cedary tobacco characters, earth and spicy bay leaf accents linger underneath. Amply powered it has a long yet very robust finish.

This is a single site Cabernet from McLaren Vale, planted in 1993. Ten days on skins, after pressing the fermentation was finished in barrel, with around 30% of it new French oak, followed by 14 months maturation. Deep maroon, the wine offers rich chocolatey notes, dry herbs, tobacco leaves, mulberries, smoked meats, plums and soy. Oak is evident, but it is not intrusive. There is a supple texture, firm finish and very good length. Sleek tannins. Lovely example of a warm climate Cabernet which will provide excellent drinking for the next eight to twelve years. Very good buying. Drink 2024-2036.

There is a change in the 2022 La Bruja. It is no longer a village wine from Rozas de Puerto Real. In 2022, it is a regional wine, and in 2023, it also will be a regional wine but from Ávila, from the Cebreros appellation, as they are focusing their work there. It's a juicy and aromatic Garnacha, very much in the Comando G style, with good ripeness, 14% alcohol and more in the style of the 2020. It has a medium-bodied palate and a sapid finish with contained ripeness and fine granite granularity. They macerated less to adapt to the vintage, and it partly fermented with less skins. It's a more approachable La Bruja, expressive, open and more fruit-driven, more in a Morgon style. 56,487 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023. Drink 2024-2029.

The Rozas 1er Cru has a slight change in 2022 and turned into a village wine, the 2022 Rozas. They selected the best five vineyards that used to go to the Rozas 1er Cru, vineyards they have worked since 2012. In this warmer vintage, they did a softer vinification, with less maceration and more fermentation without skins, to avoid over-ripeness and notes of black fruit in the wine. It has more fruit and some silty tannins, which are more like Italian tannins in the more Mediterranean years like this 2022. This village is more subject to the changes in the years, with more herbal and ethereal notes in the wines in cooler years and juicier and with more marked tannins in the warmer ones. It has 14.5% alcohol and is more jovial, definitely not banal. 10,992 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023. Drink 2024-2032.

The 2022 Navatalgordo, a village red from the village of the same name, is one of two completely new village wines from 2022, as the one from Rozas is an evolution of the Rozas 1er Cru. This was produced to reflect the character of the village, showcasing wines with tension and sharpness. It comes from soils with lots of quartz and was made with their own grapes and ones purchased from growers that have been working together with them at an average 1,100 meters in altitude. It fermented with full clusters in concrete and oak vats with 35- to 40-day maceration, and its élevage was in concrete and oak foudres. This village produces wines with lower alcohol, lower pH and higher acidity, even in warmer years like 2022. And the wine has more color, even if the alcohol is lower, from the cold. It's a wine that needs more time, more Barolo with a chalky character and slow development. It has a very floral and expressive nose, with electric acidity, and is tense, serious. This is the 2022 that feels less like 2022... Only with time in the glass did it develop some meaty aromas (Bovril?) and spiciness, which pointed at a warmer year and more Gevrey character. It has a contained 13% alcohol and a pH of around 3.0! Incredible parameters for a year like 2022. 11,047 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023. Only a little sulfur was added at bottling time, never before, as they feel the profile of the wine is more apt to work without added sulfur. Drink 2024-2034.

The 2021 El Tamboril Tinto felt closed and austere like no other wine from the portfolio. This single vineyard from the village of Navatalgordo, the most austere and cold of the villages where they work, is also the highest altitude where they work. After years of working the vineyard, they were able to buy it in 2021; and in 2022, they made even bigger changes in the viticulture (they put in individual sticks for each vine). At 1,200 meters above sea level, this is the coldest place in the coldest vintage, and the soils are as rocky and mineral as it gets. This is a serious and mineral red with a moderate 13.5% alcohol, great freshness and acidity and a palate with very fine, chalky, Barolo-like tannins that make you salivate. It should develop in bottle for a loooooong time. 1,3,42 bottles were filled in April 2023. Drink 2025-2040.

The pale, delicate and ethereal 2021 Tumba del Rey Moro feels more austere than any other vintage of this single-vineyard wine. It comes from vines at 1,100 meters above sea level on granite soils in the village of Villanueva de Ávila and has a notable absence of fruit. Instead, it's mineral and floral, with subtle herbal notes ("piparra" peppers again!). It was harvested around the 12th of October, and by that time, the grapes had had a full development of aromas and flavors. The wine finished with 14% alcohol but with gobsmacking balance and freshness. The alcohol is not noticeable, a constant across the portfolio. The nose was shy at first and took time to develop, but when it did, it was layered and complex, with more Burgundian floral notes. The palate is super austere with lots of energy, reminiscent of liquid granite, with grip and light. It's a sharp vintage of Tumba del Rey Moro. 1,712 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2023. So ethereal, scented and precise on the nose with huge complexity, but everything remains soft-spoken and quiet. Wet stones, white pepper, tile, and mineral. A little less round and loud than 2020, but this is super nuanced and refined, showing more linearity with chalky tannins. Lovely austerity here, completely stripped down. Ungrafted, north-facing vineyard. Drink or hold.

The 2024 vintage was a warm and dry season which produced pristine, high quality Pinot Gris fruit. Approximately 10% of the wine was wild fermented in older oak barrels and 10% wild fermented in tank; this adds complexity and texture to the wine. The remaining juice was fermented using a range of fermentation techniques and yeast strains to enhance the aromatic characters of the wine.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Intense pear and Jonathan apple aromas fill the nose followed by some musk, subtle honeysuckle and delicate spicy quince notes. Rich, luscious pear and ripe apple fruits infused with musk are delivered with terrific concentration and carry a full, rounded shape. Subtle honeysuckle and quince elements lie underneath. Brisk acidity lends freshness to the long supple and enveloping finish. In a word, delicious.

This wine comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where the vines were planted in 2002. The soil here is clay loam with a high calcium content, which results in thicker grape skins and more flavor. The fruit is handpicked, destemmed, and left on the skins for 12 hours before gentle pressing. The juice is wild fermented in ceramic and concrete egg-shaped containers where it is left to age on lees for a further 10 months, before bottling at 1.2 grams of residual sugar.

Present day Glenallachies are either heavily oaked or wine-driven - or both - placing them alongside some of the biggest malts on the market. Here we have an importer's selection that leans away from the extremes of Billy Walker’s official bottlings, straddling a line between older Glendronachs or Glengoynes, making for something more sophisticated in the genre. At first taste, leather and bitter peel lead into biscuity malt followed by juicy oloroso; time in the glass develops hints of honeyed cereals, curaçao, cinnamon buns, cafe cremes, walnuts and dark chocolate. It takes water well, but on its own this is perfectly approachable and worthy of the attention of fans of complex, drier-styled malts. Kudos to the Australian importer for bringing something different to the table! Eleven years in a 600L sherry butt / twenty one months in a 1st fill Oloroso cask. The wine has just been bottled, and there is a hint of CO2 that would dissipate with decanting. Ultra-pleasing chardonnay here. Even, flowing richness metered by bright acidity, all the hallmark stone fruits, apple, woody spices, nougat, vanilla going on. Supple but with a faint chalkiness, great extension of flavour, a general sense of vibrancy and drinkability. It feels dictionary definition but also a plus up on that, more of everything, and balanced beautifully. What a delight. Class above its pay grade. Drink by 2030.

Matured for 20 months in French oak. Magnificent dense inky black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Intense ripe blackberry, liquorice and black cherry aromas waft through the olfactory senses followed by some vanillin cedar, scorched earth and peppered fennel like notes. Rich and concentrated yet showing ample freshness, lavish black cherry, liquorice and black cherry fruits are framed by a taut tannin structure that still manages to retain a polished feel. Vanillin cedar, earthy graphite and peppered fennel characters ensue. Controlled yet undeniably powerful it finishes long, structured, deeply fruited and quite energetic.

From the Moreton Bay block in the Upper Tintara Vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region, this is the fourth release of this wine. It was fermented in the old slate fermenters, which were built back in 1863 (they fell out of use in 1927, but Andrew Hardy restored one in 2018). This was from the winery used by Andrew’s great-great-grandfather. The fruit was hand bucketed into the fermenter, regularly hand-plunged, then bucketed back out before pressing into barrel, 20 months in French oak. Just 4,900 bottles made of this superb Shiraz. Dark maroon. The nose is all chocolate, cassis, cigar box, tobacco leaves and blackberries. There is good complexity here, and knife-edge balance while exhibiting such richness and a supple texture, seamless and utterly gorgeous before an extremely long finish. Everything is in balance to ensure a very long future, at least twenty years, but this is so good now, so hard to imagine much will be left by then. Drink 2023-2053.
